1:2167
可敬的父啊,讓我們在患難中不要灰心喪志,因為我們知道,患難生忍耐,忍耐生歷練,歷練生盼望,而盼望不至於蒙羞,因它確實握有我們為之受苦者、那永恆美善之享受作保證;
Let us not, then, lose heart in our afflictions, honored Father, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not put to shame, having as its certainty the eternal enjoyment of the goods for which we suffer;
1:2168
而要仰望那我們救恩的創始者耶穌,勇毅地承受臨到我們的一切;
but let us bear nobly what befalls us, looking to Jesus, the author of our salvation;
1:2169
祂本是真上帝,卻甘心情願、為我們接受了死亡;
who, being true God, willingly accepted death on our behalf;
1:2170
so that, suffering, we may rejoice, having been united with him, being worked through death, as by leaven, toward the resurrection of indestructible life.
1:2171
既然神聖律法所定之旨意,乃是要我們行善卻無辜受苦,如同基督的門徒一般,以定罪於罪惡;
Since it has been established as the will of the divine law that we, doing good, should suffer unjustly, as disciples of Christ, unto the condemnation of sin;
1:2172
這罪乃是那靈智的蛇藉著欺騙所引入的;牠誘騙了人,使人違背神聖誡命,且將暫時之物看得比永恆之物更為可貴;
which sin the noetic serpent introduced through deceit, having persuaded man to transgress the divine commandment and to prefer temporal things to eternal ones;
1:2173
我們已領受了權柄可以踐踏這蛇,只要我們持守那保守我們的恩典,而這恩典是藉著遵守誡命而蒙保守的;
whom we have received authority to trample underfoot, by keeping the grace that guards us, which is preserved through the keeping of the commandments;
1:2174
which grace is accomplished, by those who love the Lord, only through the affliction of the flesh, both voluntary and involuntary, with sober reasoning.
1:2175
你既將自己全部的渴慕都繫附於祂身上,聖潔的教父啊,你便不再覺察那些苦難;
Having fastened all your desire upon him, you do not feel the afflictions, O holy Father;
1:2176
因你懷有那對所盼望之事的喜樂,這喜樂勝過了眼前的患難;
since you have the joy of the things hoped for prevailing over the present affliction;
1:2177
願我們眾人都得著這些福分——由我們的大神暨救主基督,照祂所知,按各人所配得的,分賜給我們;
which may we all obtain, Christ our great God and Savior distributing these to us, as he knows, according as each is worthy;
1:2178
by the intercession of his immaculate and all-holy ever-virgin Mother, and of all the saints.
1:2179
By the same author, to Julian the Scholastikos of Alexandria, concerning the ecclesiastical doctrine on the incarnation of the Lord.
1:2180
him who for this reason became man: that he might gather the nature of mankind to himself, and might make it cease from being borne ill toward itself — or rather, from rising up in faction against itself and being divided, and possessing no stability at all, because of the unsteady movement of the intention concerning each individual —
1:2181
相信神暨聖父之子與聖言,實實在在地『出於人、為了人、按照人的樣式』無罪地成為了人,卻並未因成為人而從『是神』這身分上有所轉變;
believing that the Son and Word of God the Father, having truly become man from men, for men, according to men, without sin, was not turned from being God even when he became man;
1:2182
他也未曾因此在『真實為人』這一點上有所減損,而是仍舊持守著他過去所是、現在所是、將來永遠所是者——依本性而言乃是神;
nor indeed has he been diminished from truly being man, having remained what he was, and is, and shall always be by nature: God;
1:2183
而是:他本著自身,依本質與本性乃是神,卻依經綸(oikonomia)為了我們,不變地實實在在成為了人,也就是藉著取了具有理性且靈智之魂的肉身;
but, being God according to essence and nature in himself, he truly became man immutably according to the economy for our sake, namely by the assumption of flesh possessing a rational and noetic soul;
1:2184
因為在祂道成肉身——亦即完全成為人——這奧祕之中,凡是為了成就那依位格(hypostasis)之合一而共同構成的諸本性之一,都絕不因這合一而否棄自身,反倒持守著自身本質性的道理與界定,也就是其本性的特質,在合一之後,相對於另一本性,依然保持不相混淆、不可變易;
inasmuch as this [flesh] is indeed one of the natures brought together for the union according to hypostasis in the mystery of his incarnation — that is, his perfect enhominization — a nature which in no way denies itself on account of the union, but preserves its own essential principle and definition, that is, its natural property, unconfused and unchangeable in relation to the other nature after the union.
1:2185
因為這合一並不廢除那被共同構成為一個位格之諸本性間的差異;
For the union does not abolish the difference of those natures brought together into one hypostasis;
1:2186
but it entirely excludes their division into separate parts.
1:2187
既然那些構成基督的元素,在合一之後依然依其本性、毫無減損地被保存在基督之內;
Since, then, the things out of which Christ consists are preserved undiminished in Christ according to nature even after the union;
1:2188
怎能不理所當然地承認那構成基督之諸元素,即使在合一之後亦然呢?——正如某些人未能洞察到,與明顯之事相爭、公然否認現存的真理,是何等危險而有害,且對每一個靈魂都帶來損害;
how is it not right to confess the things out of which Christ consists, even after the union — as some fail to perceive how precarious and dangerous it is, and how it entails harm for every soul, to fight against what is manifest and openly to deny the truth that exists;
1:2189
and that this is a trait belonging only to those who altogether do not expect resurrection and judgment.
1:2190
for to whom is the word of truth not evident and manifest, being simple and unadorned, and having nothing riddling about it at all?
1:2191
因為,若基督在合一之後乃是實際上、真實地是神又是人,而非僅僅在稱謂、名號上被稱為神與人;
For if Christ is God and man in reality and truth after the union, and is said to be God and man not merely by title and appellation;
1:2192
那麼很明顯,凡是言說且思想基督在合一之後同時是神又是人的人,便同時也承認了與那些名稱相應的本性——因為名稱正是這些本性的名稱;
it is clear that the one who says and believes Christ to be, after the union, both God and man together, has thereby confessed, along with the names, the natures of which the names are names;
1:2193
unless indeed he thinks that the appellations are applied to Christ as bare titles, altogether devoid of realities.
1:2194
What absurdity, then, has the holy catholic Church of God committed, if she says that the things out of which Christ consists are preserved in Christ, according to an indivisible union, unconfusedly and undividedly according to nature, even after the union?
1:2195
她所思想的,又有哪一點是背離聖教父們的教導呢?倘若她既不認為聖言的神性本性已轉變為肉身的本性;
And what has she thought that is alien to the teaching of the holy Fathers, if she holds that neither has the divine nature of the Word been turned into the nature of the flesh;
1:2196
nor does she believe that the very nature of the flesh has passed over into the nature of the Word on account of the union — this she teaches the faithful to think and say after the union.
1:2197
她豈不更加確認了教父傳統的教導嗎?她教導人如此思想,承認一位主、一位基督、同一位子,並承認那道成肉身之神——聖言自身——有一個『已成肉身的本性』,這肉身具有理性且靈智的靈魂——她是依照我們聖潔蒙福的教父區利羅(Cyril)的詮釋來理解這一措辭的;
And how does she not rather confirm the patristic tradition, by teaching to think in this way, and confessing one Lord and one Christ, and one and the same Son, and one incarnate nature of God the Word himself who became incarnate, with flesh possessing a rational and noetic soul — taking up this expression according to the interpretation of our holy and blessed Father Cyril;
1:2198
by saying 'incarnate', understanding thereby that the reference to our essence is being introduced, and not denying the nature of the flesh of the Word on account of the union.
1:2199
For it is the property of true faith to confess what we have been taught to think.
1:2200
If, then, the things out of which Christ consists are preserved according to nature after the union, it is certainly right also to think that they exist in Christ after the union.
1:2201
若說思想那構成基督的元素在合一之後仍得保存是正當的,那麼承認它們就更是至為正當、至為合宜,且對一切關心自身救恩之人而言,都是至關緊要之事;
And if it is right to think that the things out of which Christ consists are preserved after the union, then to confess them would be much more the most just and, at the same time, the most fitting, and most essential for all who are concerned about salvation;
1:2202
if indeed the demonstration of true faith is the confession that corresponds to it without any deficiency.
1:2203
And so much, then, concerning these matters.
1:2204
For there is no need to say more, since I am addressing this discourse to you, and to those who, by grace, are ignorant of nothing pertaining to the right faith of Christ.
1:2205
至於你們寫給我的事,至為可敬者啊,我已將我們這封珍貴的書信呈交給神那蒙福的僕人,即那位備受讚譽的總督(eparchos);
Concerning the things you wrote to me, most honored ones, I have conveyed our esteemed letter also to the blessed servant of God, the all-laudable prefect;
1:2206
他也殷勤地應許,要成就你們一切的吩咐;
and he promised eagerly to fulfill every command of yours;
1:2207
and I do not cease reminding him, until he should altogether bring your command to completion.
1:2208
And may the Lord and God of all, and our Savior Jesus Christ, who willingly accepted death on our behalf, and by his own blood redeemed us from the power of darkness, and gave us the new commandment that we love one another to the same degree that we ourselves have been loved;
1:2209
願祂親自握住你們的右手,引導你們行一切善工,並照著祂的旨意,導正你們的腳步;
may he himself hold your right hand, and guide you into every good work, and direct your steps according to him;
1:2210
bearing you, in the fullness of the fruits of righteousness, into the wondrous place of his tabernacle, where is the dwelling of all who rejoice.
1:2211
18. By the same author, in the person of George, the all-laudable prefect of Africa, to ascetic women who had apostatized from the catholic Church in Alexandria.
1:2212
我原本以為你們確實已穩固地建立起來,靈魂的根基堅定不移,立於那按照基督無瑕且不失足之信仰而有的正確、虔敬之宣認與盼望之上——你們原是敬畏那呼召你們的神之恩典,且被這恩典聯合於聖大公使徒教會那活潑、完整、無瑕的身體之中的;
I, for my part, thought that you had truly been well founded, and had the foundations of your soul unshaken, grounded in the right and pious confession and hope that accord with the blameless and unfaltering faith of Christ — you who revered the grace of God that had called you, and that had united you to the living, perfect, and blameless body of the holy catholic and apostolic Church;
1:2213
這恩典也已使你們——那先前因謬誤與無知這消耗性疾病而墮落跌倒的人——重獲康健,並使你們成為教會共同身體上有用的肢體;
and had already restored to health you who had fallen away through the wasting disease of error and ignorance, and had made you a useful member of the common body of the Church;
1:2214
這教會之中,那虔敬、正確、真實且帶來救恩的使徒信仰之道,正興旺地被宣揚,將普天之下都納入自身之內;
the Church in which the pious, right, true, and salvific word of the apostolic faith is proclaimed in full vigor, making all that is under heaven to be within itself;
1:2215
並不斷地將那尚缺欠的加添、附加於那已被聚集的之上;
and continually adding and joining what is lacking to that which has already been gathered together;
1:2216
並顯明從地極到地極的萬民,藉著信仰的同心與一致,在靈裡乃是同一個靈魂、同一種言語;
and showing that all people, from the ends of the earth to its ends, are one soul and one tongue in the Spirit, according to the concord and unanimity of the faith;
1:2217
這信仰乃是萬人之創造者、神的聖言,藉著取了具有理性且靈智之魂的肉身,難以言喻地、真實地『出於人、為了人、按人的樣式』——並非因神性有所轉變而成為人,且是無罪地成為人——所教導我們眾人當如此宣認與擁抱的:即在合一之後,也就是在成為人之後,絕不可完全否認祂的任何一個本性;
which faith the Word of God, the Creator of mankind, having ineffably and truly become man — from men, for men, according to men — by the assumption of flesh possessing a rational and noetic soul, and having become man not by any change of the deity, namely without sin, taught us men to confess and to embrace, in no way whatsoever denying either of his natures after the union, that is, after the enhominization;
1:2218
既不可否認其神性——依此神性,祂在自身之內永遠是神,且與聖父同本質,並恆常如此;
neither the divine nature, according to which he is and remains always, in himself, God, and consubstantial with the Father;
1:2219
nor the human nature, according to which the same one truly became man for our sake, as the lover of mankind, and is consubstantial with us.
1:2220
因為祂並未從祂過去所是、現在所是、且將永遠所是者——依本性乃是神——有所轉變;
For neither was he turned from what he was and is, and shall forever be by nature: God;
1:2221
祂也並未改變祂因與已賦有靈魂之肉身不可分割地合一而成為人這一事實的本性,祂乃是同一位,既是神又是人;
nor indeed did he alter the nature of that which he became — man, by an indivisible union with ensouled flesh — being one and the same, both God and man;
1:2222
in truth being properly God and man, and being truly so named.
1:2223
That which results from the union is one and unique according to hypostasis, but does not have oneness according to nature, as the Fathers teach, saying: 'For even if the combination of both is one, it is not one by nature in their conjunction' — according to which union, having condescended, as good, to become composite for our sake by the economy, he preserves unimpaired, even after the incarnation, that which is simple according to nature, according to which he is of the same nature as the Father and remains consubstantial with him.
1:2224
For divinity and humanity are not the same thing.
1:2225
因為即便神的聖言成為了人,祂之所以成為人,乃是藉著取了那依位格不可分割地、以靈智的方式與祂聯合的肉身;
For even though the Word of God became man, he became man by the assumption of flesh united to him indivisibly according to hypostasis, in a noetic manner;
1:2226
祂同時完全地是這個又是那個,毫無欠缺;
being both this and that without deficiency;
1:2227
祂既不因位格那極致的獨一性而混淆——依此獨一性,差異之理是完全不存在的;
neither being confused by the utterly unique character of the hypostasis, according to which the principle of difference is altogether absent;
1:2228
也不因祂所由構成之諸本性間那純粹的相異性而被分割;
nor being divided by the pure otherness of the natures out of which he is constituted;
1:2229
according to which otherness the principle of difference is in no way abolished on account of the union.
1:2230
既然那構成基督之諸本性間的差異,即使在合一之後,仍不相混淆地被保存,那麼,依我看,絕沒有任何道理能夠證明:那些依本性彼此有別、且依不可分割之合一被保存在基督之內者,其『數量』竟不應被承認——這是說不通的;
Since, then, the difference of the natures out of which Christ consists is preserved unconfusedly even after the union, there is not, I think, any argument whatsoever able to show that it would be right for the number of the things that differ naturally and are preserved in Christ according to an indivisible union not to be confessed;
1:2231
because every difference certainly introduces along with itself a number of certain things that differ from one another in some respect.
1:2232
因為從來沒有人——即便他是何等機巧、何等足智多謀——只要他思想正確,且對真理稍加留意,就能夠聲稱『差異』可以脫離『數量』而存在;
For never could anyone, even if he be most resourceful and most inventive, be able to assert that there is difference apart from number, if he thinks rightly and gives even the slightest consideration to truth;
1:2233
因他清楚知道,一切差異,或是某些事物依本質而有的相異,或是某些事物依性質與特質而有的不相似;
clearly knowing that every difference is either an otherness of certain things according to essence, or a dissimilarity of certain things according to quality and property;
1:2234
which difference the quantity of the underlying realities certainly produces, whether they exist in union or even apart from it.
1:2235
For in the case of those things in which one and the same principle is not observed in every respect, there is an implication of quantity, of which difference is the property.
1:2236
既然如此,若照著道理,就基督而言,正如教父們所教導,理當說『依位格而言全然獨一』這一點是屬於合一的;
If, then, in the case of Christ, it follows according to reason to say that what is altogether unique according to hypostasis belongs to the union, as the Fathers teach;
1:2237
而就那構成基督之諸本性——即使在合一之後,仍不相混淆亦不可分割地被保存在基督之內者——之間的差異而言,說其中含有『數量』,則是合乎邏輯且恰當的;
then, to the difference of the natures out of which Christ consists, which are preserved in Christ even after the union unconfusedly and undividedly, it is consistent and fitting to attribute number;
1:2238
顯然,正如那不承認基督因位格之合一乃是『神的聖言那已成肉身的一個本性』——依我們至聖教父暨導師區利羅的詮釋而正確理解——的人,便是不相信這合一確實已經發生;
it is clear that, just as the one who does not say that Christ, on account of the hypostatic union, is one incarnate nature of God the Word — rightly understood according to the interpretation of our most holy Father and teacher Cyril — does not believe that the union has taken place;
1:2239
so also the one who does not confess the two natures after the union, out of which Christ consists, cannot say that the difference is preserved.
1:2240
For the difference after the union is a difference of the natural otherness of the things out of which Christ consists, and not merely of a dissimilarity according to quality alone, apart from the natures underlying the qualities.
1:2241
without which it is among the things impossible for quality to exist in itself,
1:2242
lest we introduce a bare — or rather, to speak more properly, a false and non-existent — difference.
1:2243
Persuaded that we hold this confession of the faith precisely, according to the Fathers, I never hesitated to write to all, everywhere, at any time — to patriarchs and bishops and rulers, and to our most pious and ever-radiant emperors themselves — for the thanksgiving of God, making manifest to all your genuine transference to Christ and your faith,
1:2244
and I never thought, as I said, that you would so quickly be turned away from your saving calling.
1:2245
But since, because of my sins, the evil one — who from the beginning through deceit drags the human race down into ruin and destruction — was also able to persuade you to prefer falsehood to truth,
1:2246
and, on account of an evil habit, [to prefer], more than God and the goods laid up for the saints, to hand yourselves over to a deception unto death — [the deception] of those who have been taught to do nothing but entice —
1:2247
you resolved to turn away from the grace of Christ.
1:2248
For the time being, give the gifts that have come to you from me to the man Theopemptos, who alone was sent by me for this very purpose, together with a written mandate, so that you may have no doubt whatsoever concerning this.
1:2249
And again, if it should seem fitting to our most pious, Christ-loving, and ever-radiant emperors, and to the most holy patriarchs — who, through me, as I come with God's help into the presence of their Serenity, are learning all things concerning you, concerning your apostasy and such great wickedness and ingratitude — that something [further] be done, I shall judge it to be well.
1:2250
For I will not pass over so great an evil in silence.
1:2251
But if, taking to mind the fearful tribunal of Christ, at which, in the presence of angels and archangels and the whole host of the heavenly armies, and of all human nature, the case that I shall bring against you concerning this will be convened, you repent, and return again to the God who has called you in grace —
1:2252
那麼我願你們此刻便重新持有那由我所贈予你們的基業;
then I wish you to keep possession, even now, of that very foundation which was granted to you by me;
1:2253
and I will not cease, for as long as I am appointed to live this present and temporal life, to devise ways for your greater support.
1:2254
And I would not refuse to give myself as a ransom for your souls, should occasion necessarily call for this to come to pass.
1:2255
Indeed I will give [myself] readily, as God, through his grace, calls me to this —
1:2256
if only you would restore yourselves again to Christ God,
1:2257
and, through your return, would rightly heal the cutting-off and separation that has come upon you from his body.
1:2258
19. Of the same [author], to Pyrrhus, the most devout presbyter and abbot.
1:2259
Having read your holy letter, O Father honored by God, I recognized your whole mind to have been wholly imbued with the Spirit,
1:2260
and I perceived it to have stood so far outside natural understanding, as I discerned it to have laid hold of divine and supra-natural wisdom.
1:2261
For through your letters I seemed to see, as it were present, your very own God-wise mind, flashing forth with the undefiled rays of the Spirit alone —
1:2262
藉著這些光芒,它自然而然地被變化,趨向更神聖之境——這心思,正屬於那蒙萬有之父恩准得以被立為義子者;
rays by which it is naturally transfigured toward the more divine, [that mind belonging to] him who has been deemed worthy to be adopted as son by the Father of all;
1:2263
and I recognized it redeeming me from ignorance of the divine doctrines, to the very degree that I had previously seemed to cling to knowledge of them.
1:2264
"Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked."
1:2265
可敬的父啊,然而我所稱為有福的,不僅是那生育你的婦人,因她蒙恩配得作如此一人之母;
But I do not only call blessed her who bore you, honored Father, as one deemed worthy to become the mother of such a man;
1:2266
but I also [call blessed] your understanding, which ever conceives, and bears in the womb, and gives birth to pious reason —
1:2267
as one shown, by grace, to be a womb capable of containing the Word who is above nature, on account of the affinity of your mind's intent toward the Word himself.
1:2268
And indeed, according to your steadfast dispositions issuing from your heart, by which, after the manner of breasts, you nourish the Word both in practice and in contemplation — [the Word] growing together with the supply of pious thoughts and manners —
1:2269
and, paradoxically speaking, making its own growth to be the deification of the mind that nourishes it.
1:2270
For what else could I have uttered to you, honored Father, beholding you to have become the begetter of such words —
1:2271
藉著這些言辭,你彷彿從知識高處的某座山峰,將關乎神聖教義的決議揭示出來——那決議乃是藉著這位新中保、於我們而言即是那偉大的摩西、眾祭司之祭司、遍及普世的神聖聖職之元首,如同神所刻的法版一般被頒發並傳出的;
through which words, as from a certain mountain-peak of the height of knowledge, you disclosed the decree concerning the divine doctrines, brought and issued as it were like god-inscribed tablets, through the new Mediator and, for us, the great Moses, the priest of priests, and the exarch of the divine priesthood over the whole inhabited world;
1:2272
[a decree] which bound the churches yet more together in concord, as they counted for nothing the innovation concerning the faith that appeared to many to have occurred in the city of Alexandria.
1:2273
For the decree that was given preserved, in its entirety, this very understanding, according to which our God-bearing Fathers handed down [the faith] for the holy churches to believe:
1:2274
declaring [him to be] one and the same God the Word, both before the flesh and with the flesh —
1:2275
這肉身乃祂自己為了我們,按位格與自己聯合為一,是被賦予理性之魂的肉身,取自那聖潔的天主之母、終身童貞的瑪利亞;
[flesh] which he himself, for our sake, united to himself hypostatically, [flesh] ensouled with a rational soul, having been assumed from the holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary;
1:2276
he himself having deigned to become, that is to say, the very sowing of his own incarnation,
1:2277
so that he might also truly become man,
1:2278
and might show, by the seedless conception and the incorrupt birth, that nature was being renewed, and yet suffered no diminishment through this renewal.
1:2279
因為這奧秘,乃是神因祂對人類的良善而甘願的自我倒空——然而那藉肉身而成的甘願俯就,並非神性的墮落;
For the mystery was, on account of God's goodness toward mankind, a voluntary self-emptying — but the willing condescension through the flesh was not a lapse of divinity;
1:2280
for he remained what he was, even while becoming what he was not.
1:2281
And what he became, he preserved, having remained what he was — for he is a lover of mankind —
1:2282
and through the things he suffered in a manner befitting man, [thereby] confirming that what he was underwent no change.
1:2283
因為祂以肉身的方式運作那些神聖之事,因這是藉著並不缺乏其本性運作的肉身而行的;
For he operated the divine things in a fleshly manner, because it was through flesh that was not devoid of its natural operation;
1:2284
and the human things divinely, because he admitted the experience of human sufferings according to volition, sovereignly, but not according to [external] necessity.
1:2285
因為祂並非單以神聖的方式行那神聖之事,因祂並非一位赤裸的神;
For neither [did he do] the divine things divinely [alone], since he was not a bare God;
1:2286
也並非單以肉身的方式行那屬人之事,因祂也並非一個尋常的人;
nor the human things fleshly [alone], since he was not a mere man;
1:2287
而那些苦難,也從未在缺乏奇蹟的情況下發生;
and the sufferings did not occur apart from a wonder;
1:2288
然而——容我斗膽一言——前者(那些奇蹟)並非不帶受苦;
but the former — the wonders, if I may dare to say so — were not impassible;
1:2289
And both were paradoxical, because both the divine [things] and the human, proceeding as from one and the same incarnate God the Word, through both realities really confirmed the truth both of that from which he [was composed], and of what he actually was.
1:2290
For that which is brought to completion, unconfusedly, from certain [components], by a union according to natural conjunction, both preserves unchanged the natures from which it is constituted, and preserves undiminished their constitutive powers, unto the fulfillment of one single work.
1:2291
whether what took place was a suffering or a wonder, according to the image of your marvelous example, Father, fitting for the mystery of the divine incarnation — that of the sword that has been set aflame, whose cutting we know to be burning, and whose burning we know to be cutting.
1:2292
因為火與鐵已按位格會合為一,卻無一方因與另一方的合一,而脫離其本性的能力;
For a conjunction of fire and iron has come to be according to hypostasis, with neither having departed from its natural power on account of the union with the other;
1:2293
yet neither does it possess this [power] as unrestrained after the union, nor as separated from that which is compounded and subsists together with it.
1:2294
This, then, is the precision of the divine doctrines that I found wisely woven into your letters; and, having set my mind upon it according to the limited power for understanding that is united to me, I prayed to become able to guard it, and to hold it fast in my understanding, so that it might not admit any effacement through some forgetfulness.
1:2295
But you, O Father honored by God, have compassion on me, your servant, and, as one who loves mankind, grant the pardon that is due to one who is unable to undertake the things commanded.
1:2296
也不要因我的不順從而定我的罪;
And do not condemn me for disobedience;
1:2297
but rather accept me as one who strives to become aware of his own ignorance.
1:2298
For rashness is hateful, and the firstborn offspring of the utmost ignorance,
1:2299
驕傲之病正是依此而顯露出來,它在那些被它所擄獲的人裡面,塑造出一種與神為敵的性情;
according to which the disease of pride is naturally wont to show itself, creating in those who are seized by it a disposition set against God;
1:2300
and receive my refusal in this matter as pure of all base affection,
1:2301
and do not reject me, as I set before you the very same words which, in such matters, Moses first, and Jeremiah afterward, set before God:
1:2302
"I am slow of speech and slow of tongue."
1:2303
拙於言辭,且欠缺善於言說美善之事的悟性;
Slow of tongue, and deprived of the understanding needed to speak good things well;
1:2304
having neither a mind capable of laying hold of divine things, nor speech in utterance able to serve the magnitude of the matters inquired into.
1:2305
For I am still young with respect to the passions, and I possess the rebellion of the flesh gaining the advantage over the law of the spirit.
1:2306
Moreover, even if we should grant, hypothetically, that I lack nothing of the capacity needed for these matters, who is so brazen and so bold as to add further ordinances to what has already been decreed hierarchically according to the divine vote?
1:2307
我反倒懇求你,藉著你尊貴的書信,以確切的界說向我闡明:何謂『運作』、『運作』又可依幾種意義而言,並且有別於此者,何謂『運作之產物』;
Rather, I beseech you, by your honored letters, to clarify for me by definition: what is 'operation,' and in how many senses is 'operation' spoken of, and what, distinct from this, pertains to the product of operation;
1:2308
and what difference we ascribe to these in relation to 'work' and 'action,' so that I may be able to know the meaning of what has been written.
1:2309
For I have not yet been able to determine precisely what, and in what sense — whether spoken or conceived — one ought to understand the term 'one operation.'
1:2310
For we do not simply utter meaningless sounds, but we signify concepts by our words.
1:2311
for the mystery of our salvation consists not in syllables, but in thoughts and deeds.
1:2312
一方面他們如此行,是為了顧念和平;
For the one thing they did, caring for peace;
1:2313
and the other, establishing souls in the truth.
1:2314
And so much, then, concerning these things.
1:2315
and that they undertook to become all things which the exact sense of the divine commandment requires, as men desiring the things of God, and having the incarnate Word alone as the pattern of their own life.
1:2316
For they are worthy of your zeal for this, because they draw blamelessly the divine yoke of virtue and knowledge.
1:2317
and let it be justly said of me too, what one of the wise men outside our own discourse said, upon observing a certain tasteless person puffed up over something —
1:2318
"The wise man, with a smile, provoked the fool to outrage."
1:2319
In all things, then, holy Father, forgive me, your servant, and by your all-holy prayers propitiate Christ God on my behalf, whom you continually serve through purity of mind and exactness of life.
1:2320
20. By the same author, to Marinus the monk.
1:2321
I, for my part, knowing the multitude of my own transgressions, and foreseeing the condemnation that will, as is likely, come upon me for them after my departure from this life,
1:2322
and considering in my soul that great and dreadful tribunal as already convened, at which each of us shall receive, according to our worth, recompense for what we have done —
1:2323
我決意以緘默為伴,在我看來,是要全然自制,不去妄用那超乎我所能及的神聖言語,免得因我缺乏善行而使我所宣講的神言變為死物,以致更當受譴責,而且是更加公正地受譴責,並因此無法將恩典中的生命賜予聽者;
I resolved to keep silence as my companion, sparing myself in every way, as it seems to me, from the divine words that are beyond me, lest I be condemned the more, and the more justly, as one who utters the words of God while they lie deadened by my own want of good works, and are therefore unable to impart to the hearers the life that is in grace;
1:2324
and having no power to display, in my own conduct as the one who speaks them, the manner of the virtues,
1:2325
but rather having slain those very words, and offering to the hearers, in my whole wicked conduct of life, a living and to-all-manifest image of contempt toward them.
1:2326
I, then, as I have said, both knowing and fearing these things, shook off my eagerness for speaking and writing the divine words, judging it to be the greatest injustice — and a ruinous loss — to receive empty praise from my hearers for things whose practice I do not possess.
1:2327
But since the most holy abbot — a man of great prudence, and altogether precious to me, whom I was unable to refuse on account of the beauty of the virtues that fittingly adorn him according to divine understanding — has overcome my resolve of silence with the many charms of divine reasonings,
1:2328
並強迫我向您這敬虔者撰寫這篇淺陋的文字,他向我述說了您依神所成就之美德的部分事蹟,使我大蒙裨益;
and has compelled me to compose this modest letter to your piety, having recounted to me some part of your achievements in accordance with God, and having greatly benefited me thereby;
1:2329
I thought it necessary to state briefly those things which are profitable and salutary to you and to me, and to all who are willing to hear.
1:2330
"The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord;"
1:2331
"and good understanding belongs to all who practice it."
1:2332
But if fear is established as the beginning of wisdom, then clearly the end of wisdom is, by nature, good understanding, for those who practice it.
1:2333
If, then, these things are so, let us strive with all our power to acquire the fear of God, and good understanding.
1:2334
敬畏,是為了使我們逃避罪的玷污,藉著對永刑的期待,將這些玷污從靈魂中抖落;
Fear, so that we may flee the defilements of sin, shaking them off from the soul through expectation of the eternal punishments;
1:2335
and understanding, so that we may be shown to be knowledgeable doers of all the divine wills.
1:2336
因為那敬畏因干犯神聖誡命而招致刑罰的人,不會被玷污其靈魂的情所擄獲;
For he who fears the penalties for transgressing the divine commandments is not captured by the passions that defile his soul;
1:2337
and he who possesses good understanding inwardly — distinguishing, according to right reason, temporal things from eternal — becomes richly adorned with all divine goods, in no way permitting the knowledge within him to be shown idle.
1:2338
因為敬畏在真正敬畏神的人裡面,成為除滅污穢情慾者;
For as fear, in those who truly fear God, becomes the destroyer of unclean passions,
1:2339
so too understanding, in those who are truly understanding, becomes the fashioner of all the virtues.
1:2340
所以,讓我們敬畏神,凡祂所不願意的,我們一概不去行;
Therefore let us fear God, and do nothing of what He does not will;
1:2341
並且愛慕祂的悟性;
and let us love His understanding;
1:2342
and let us neglect nothing of what He wills us to do.
1:2343
For he who fears God hates all lawlessness, and he who has made good understanding to dwell within him loves all righteousness.
1:2344
因為正如對不法的憎惡,標誌出那敬畏神的人;
For just as hatred of lawlessness signifies the one who fears God,
1:2345
so too love of righteousness makes manifest the man of understanding.
1:2346
所以,我們不要僅僅以愁苦的外貌來裝扮敬畏,也不要僅在表面舉止上顯出虔敬;
Let us not, then, fashion our fear by mere outward manners of gloominess, nor display piety as existing only up to appearances;
1:2347
而是藉著靈魂的性向,以及心靈的謙卑——這謙卑在深處以頻密的嘆息得以堅固;
but by the disposition of the soul, and by humility of heart, secured deep within by frequent sighs;
1:2348
and by the scourge of the memory of former sins striking it invisibly in the conscience, and therefore, drawing inward upon itself, it does not bear to look at all upon the faults of others.
1:2349
For he who feigns the fear of God by mere outward manners differs in no way whatsoever from the ape, which imitates the manners and gestures of men.
1:2350
因為這動物雖列於四足獸類之中,本性上與人性相去甚遠,卻因模仿人的舉止,在觀者眼中似乎像個人,雖然牠本性中毫無人性可言;
For this creature, among the four-footed animals, though standing by nature far removed from human nature, seems by its imitation of manners to those who observe it to be a man, although it possesses nothing human by nature;
1:2351
正如那模仿真正敬畏主之人舉止、以欺瞞旁觀者的人,他意念的性向並未如那些人一般被神聖敬畏所塑造,其實質與稱謂,不過是另一個撒都該人或文士;
just as also the one who imitates the manners of those who truly fear the Lord, so as to deceive those who behold him, but does not have the disposition of his intent formed by the divine fear equally with them, is in reality — and is rightly called — some other Sadducee or Scribe;
1:2352
保持著敬虔的外表,帶著外在的體面端莊;
preserving the outward form of piety with external decorum,
1:2353
but falling short of the reality, on account of the unclean affection for the passions lying somewhere in the depths of the soul.
1:2354
同樣,我們也不要僅以雕琢華美的言辭之發聲,來炫示神聖的知識;
Nor, again, let us display divine knowledge by mere utterance of words polished for beauty;
1:2355
也不要將美好的悟性,僅僅界定為單純能言說而不付諸行動;
nor let us define good understanding as consisting merely in the bare ability to speak, apart from acting;
1:2356
而應由靈魂因實踐德行所塑成的性向來界定,因此一方面藉行為使知識的光輝更加明亮;
but rather by the disposition of the soul shaped through practice by the virtues, and therefore, on the one hand, by action making bright the radiance of knowledge;
1:2357
另一方面則藉知識使行為的活力更加煥發;
and, on the other hand, by knowledge illumining the vigor of action;
1:2358
使敬畏藉著實際行為,與依美好悟性而生對神的渴慕相結合,在我們裡面成就完全的神聖智慧;
so that fear, joining together through deeds with the desire for God that comes by good understanding, may work in us perfect divine wisdom;
1:2359
beginning, on the one hand, in the abstention from evils that comes through divine fear, and being perfected, on the other hand, in the practice of the commandments that comes through good understanding.
