1:1716
使他得以藉這些用語,一舉將亞波里納流的混淆與涅斯多留的分割——這兩種截然相反的謬誤——一併驅離神聖的院宇;
so that by means of these very expressions he might at once drive away from the divine court both the confusion of Apollinarius and the division of Nestorius, evils diametrically opposed to each other;
1:1717
並成為這奧祕純潔的敬拜者;
and become a pure worshipper of the mystery;
1:1718
承認同一位,在上,由父所生,先於萬世;
confessing the same one as having been begotten from above, from the Father, before all the ages;
1:1719
and the same one from below, namely, by the assumption of flesh animated rationally and intellectually, having been born of the Mother for our sake in the last times.
1:1720
並因此相信聖童貞女確實在本義且真實的意義上是「上帝之母」(Θεοτόκος),因為她不藉種子而懷孕了那道(聖言)本身,並懷胎、且由自身生出了那成為肉身者;
And on this account believing the holy Virgin to be, properly and in truth, the Theotokos, because, having conceived the Word himself instead of by seed, she has borne in her womb and given birth to him made flesh from herself;
1:1721
同一位行了諸般神蹟;
the same one working the miracles;
1:1722
同一位按己意忍受人類受苦的經歷,同一位被釘十字架、被埋葬、且照聖經所言於第三日復活;
the same one, by his own will, enduring the experience of human sufferings, the same one crucified, buried, and risen on the third day according to the Scriptures;
1:1723
已成肉身地被接升入諸天——祂正是從那諸天,無肉身地降臨到我們這裡,其中緣由唯祂自知;
taken up, incarnate, into the heavens, from which he had come down to us without flesh, as he himself knows;
1:1724
祂身為神,按本性並無從一處遷移至另一處之事;
he who, as God, has by nature no transition from place to place;
1:1725
因為祂本性無限,因此絕不受限於任何受造之物,是全然自由不受任何界限所限;祂又本性愛人,因此按己意忍受我們肉身的誕生,且使自己成為可被我們所容納者;
For he is by nature infinite, and therefore in no way contained by the things that exist, as being free from all circumscription; and by nature loving toward mankind, and therefore, by his own will, enduring our fleshly birth, and becoming containable by what is ours;
1:1726
the same one who is to come with the distribution, prepared to give to each according to his worth.
1:1727
上述那位極蒙神所愛的科斯馬斯(Cosmas)主既欣然接受了這信仰宣認,我也歡喜地接納了他;並且,在得知他那按基督而有的單純心志後,我竟將其看得比我自己的靈魂更為珍貴;
The aforementioned most God-beloved lord Cosmas, who gladly welcomed this confession—him I too received rejoicing, and, having come to know his simple disposition according to Christ, I preferred it above my own soul;
1:1728
且關於他所詢問的教義要點,我已給了他一份簡要的書面答覆;
and concerning the dogmatic chapters about which he inquired, I gave him a written, concise reply;
1:1729
and it is fitting that you also, guarded by God, receive this and exercise yourselves in it.
1:1730
因為你們藉著對這篇文本的良好講解使他受益,補全那因文辭簡略而有所欠缺的意涵;
For you will benefit him through your excellent exposition upon the text, filling in the sense of what has been omitted on account of its brevity;
1:1731
and so much, then, concerning this matter.
1:1732
但我提醒你們這些蒙神護佑的人,要照主的吩咐警醒禱告,免得我們被那從四面八方環伺我們的試探之網羅所擒獲;
But I remind you, guarded by God, to watch and to pray according to the command of the Lord, lest we be caught in the snares of the temptations that beset us from every side;
1:1733
因為我知道,若我們警醒謹守,我們便得保守,免受群魔詭計之害;
For if we watch and are sober, I know that we are guarded against the wiles of the demons;
1:1734
而若我們禱告,我們便會將神聖的恩典吸引來作我們的幫助,這恩典與我們並肩作戰,使我們得勝一切敵對的勢力,並救我們脫離一切迷惑與無知;
and if we pray, we draw to our aid the divine grace, fighting alongside us, and rendering us victors over every opposing power, and delivering us from all error and ignorance;
1:1735
而尤其在此刻,我們更當如此行;
and especially now we ought to do this;
1:1736
because even apart from the commandment, nature itself becomes a teacher of taking refuge in God, taking circumstance as its counselor.
1:1737
For what is more critical than the evils that now encompass the inhabited world?
1:1738
and what is more terrible for those who perceive the things that are happening?
1:1739
and what is more pitiable or more fearful for those who suffer these things?
1:1740
眼見一個游牧荒野、野蠻的民族,如踏過己土一般橫行於他人的土地上;
To see a nomadic and barbarous nation running through a foreign land as though it were its own;
1:1741
又眼見那馴良的文明生活方式,正被那些僅存人形外貌的、狂野未馴的野獸所吞噬;
and to see the civilized way of life being consumed by wild and untamed beasts, who possess only the bare outward shape of humans;
1:1742
又眼見猶太的民族,自古以來便以人血為樂,且唯獨將謀殺神所造之人視為蒙神喜悅之事;
and a Jewish people, who from of old delight in human blood, and who know the murder of God's creature as the only thing well-pleasing to the divine;
1:1743
並因此更加狂暴,以致在邪惡的豐盛上,比一切以惡行著稱者更為顯著;
and, on this account, raging all the more, so as to become more conspicuous, in the abundance of its wickedness, than all those notorious for evil;
1:1744
且此民族竟自以為藉著那使神憎惡之事而在事奉神;
and supposing that they serve God by the very things at which God is offended;
1:1745
是地上萬民中最無信之民;
the most faithless of all the peoples upon the earth;
1:1746
且因此最適於接納那敵對的勢力;
and therefore most apt for the reception of the opposing power;
1:1747
以各種方式與心志,為那惡者的到來作前導、開路;
heralding, in every manner and disposition, the advent of the evil one;
1:1748
並藉由它所行之事,預示著敵基督的降臨,因為它不曾認識那真正的救主;
and, through the things it does, signaling the coming of the Antichrist, since it did not recognize him who is truly the Savior;
1:1749
這是一個懷有敵意、悖逆律法、既恨人又恨神的民族;並且因為它恨神,所以更加恨人;並且被容許在對聖徒的凌辱中恣意妄為;
a nation hostile and lawless, both man-hating and God-hating, and on this account man-hating all the more because it is God-hating, and permitted to indulge in outrages against the saints;
1:1750
since vengeance is near, so that it may be punished all the more justly, its tyranny and rebellion against God having been fully manifested through its deeds.
1:1751
……此民乃虛謊之維護者、嗜血之締造者,亦真理之仇敵;
...the people who are champions of falsehood, artificers of bloodshed, and enemies of truth;
1:1752
乃我信仰之殘酷逼迫者——藉此信仰,多神之謬誤已被推翻,群魔之陣列亦被驅逐;
the bitter persecutor of my faith, through which the error of polytheism was overthrown and the phalanxes of demons were driven away;
1:1753
For the Lord Most High is terrible, a great King over all the earth.
1:1754
獨生子藉肉身降臨、寓居於他們中間,如此奧祕地為他們所認識;
The only-begotten Son was made known to them mystically, having sojourned among them through flesh;
1:1755
其為『主』,乃因祂向那些藉實行誡命而順服的僕人吩咐美德;
Lord indeed, as one enjoining virtue upon servants who submit through the practice of the commandments;
1:1756
其為『至高者』,乃因祂是真知識之供應者,賜給那些因慕慧智、藉默觀而急切奔赴脫去表號、赤裸把握奧祕之人;
Most High, as the giver of true knowledge to those who, through desire for wisdom by means of contemplation, press on toward the comprehension of the mysteries stripped bare of symbols;
1:1757
其為『可畏者』,乃因祂身為審判者,且是違犯之報應者;
Terrible, as judge, and avenger of transgressions;
1:1758
其為『君王』,乃因祂是按各人配得所預備者之分配者;
King, as the distributor to each of what has been prepared according to merit;
1:1759
亦為『大者』,乃因祂超乎本性、藉相反之事成就相反之事;
and great, as one who, beyond nature, works contraries by means of contraries;
1:1760
藉受苦而創造無情感、藉死亡而創造生命,並以弔詭之大能,藉其按肉身所受之匱乏,將美善不變之常態賜予本性;
and creating impassibility through suffering, and life through death, and by a paradoxical power, through his own privations according to the flesh, bestowing upon nature the immutable dispositions of good things;
1:1761
And not even thus is the deranged people ashamed, nor does it cease persecuting faith and virtue,
1:1762
彼等顯然是因嫉恨而逼迫此二者;
which things it clearly persecutes on account of malice;
1:1763
彼乃自二者皆已墮落之人,卻不自知已墮落,兩膝俱跛,且全然不能從不虔之跌倒中起身——或更確切地說,是不願起身;
as one who has fallen away from both, and does not know that he has fallen, limping upon both knees, and being wholly unable to rise up from the fall of impiety—or rather unwilling, to speak more properly;
1:1764
as one who always betrays faith and virtue for the sake of pride and pleasure—an apostate and foolish people, an untaught nation.
1:1765
此背道者、滿盈罪愆之人,將其生命分予此二者:以驕傲為悖離神之母,以逸樂為仇視人類之締造者;
Having apportioned his life between these two, the apostate, full of iniquities, makes the one his mother of apostasy from God, and the other the artificer of hatred of mankind;
1:1766
以致神與受造之物皆因他而遭褻瀆;
so that both God and creation are outraged by him;
1:1767
the one being despised, the other being corrupted by the pollutions of his practices.
1:1768
What, as I have said, is more terrible than these things to the eyes or ears of Christians?
1:1769
A harsh and monstrous nation, permitted to be seen lifting up hands against the divine inheritance!
1:1770
But it is the multitude of our sins that has caused these things to come to pass.
1:1771
For we have not conducted our lives worthily of the Gospel of Christ.
1:1772
我們都犯了罪,我們都行了不法之事,我們都離棄了誡命之道——那說『我就是道路』的道——並彼此相殘如野獸,無視祂愛人之恩典,也無視那為我們成了肉身之神受苦的奧祕;
We have all sinned, we have all transgressed the law, we have all forsaken the way of the commandments—the way that said, 'I am the way'—and we have turned savage against one another, ignoring the grace of his love for mankind, and the mystery of the sufferings of God incarnate for us;
1:1773
並且我們行走於難行之路——即以己心意之意向,確認了對可恥情慾之依戀;
and we have traveled impassable paths, having ratified by the disposition of our mind, that is to say, our attachments to the passions of dishonor;
1:1774
But let us watch and pray, lest our hearts be further weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness,
1:1775
所謂『宴樂』,即在逼迫之時對信仰道理之猶疑動搖;
For dissipation is the wavering concerning the doctrine of faith in times of persecution;
1:1776
所謂『沉醉』,則是拋卻合乎本性之思念——藉此思念,萬有之真實辨識本應自然而生——每當靈魂因軟弱而屈服於試探之侵擾時;
and drunkenness is the casting off of the thoughts according to nature, through which the true discernment of beings naturally comes about, whenever the soul, through weakness, yields to the assaults of temptations;
1:1777
and, having been darkened, it suffers agitation concerning, as I have said, the doctrine of faith.
1:1778
因為,若我們禱告儆醒,便更堅定持守對我們主、神耶穌基督之信,因我們親眼目睹並藉經歷領受祂所預言之應驗;
For if we pray and watch, we hold the faith in our Lord and God Jesus Christ all the more firmly, beholding and receiving by experience the fulfillment of what he foretold;
1:1779
and we are not at all bewildered, nor do we endure any turmoil of soul, as though suffering contrary to the promise, but we hold the faith more firmly, beholding through the events the fulfillment of the Lord's prediction—
1:1780
因為所預言之事的應驗,愈發藉那些發生之事而能產生信仰之堅固;我們也將堅固自己的信,因見那說話者確實為真;
for the fulfillment of what was foretold has the power to produce [confirmation of] faith, all the more through the things that come to pass; and we shall confirm our faith, finding him who spoke to be true;
1:1781
並讓我們在人前承認祂為神,絲毫不畏懼死亡;
and let us confess him as God before men, dreading no death whatsoever;
1:1782
好叫祂也在父面前承認我們;
so that he too may confess us before the Father;
1:1783
並藉美好的承認,將我們這些得救之人引薦於前——這美好承認,祂自己已率先作為我們美善之典範;
and may present us, saved, through the good confession, of which he himself made the beginning as the pattern for our own good [confession];
1:1784
祂曾在本丟彼拉多面前作見證,承認了那美好的承認;
having testified before Pontius Pilate, and having confessed the good confession;
1:1785
願我們蒙祂恩典,得配效法此承認,凡時機呼召之時;
which may we be deemed worthy, by his grace, to imitate, whenever the occasion should call;
1:1786
不魯莽躁進撲向那因虔敬教義而生之危難,反倒竭盡所能逃避試探——既出於對逼迫者之憐恤,亦出於對我們內在自然軟弱之明智省察;
not rashly rushing upon the dangers incurred for the doctrine of piety, but fleeing the temptations as far as possible, both out of consideration for our persecutors, and out of a discerning assessment of the natural weakness inherent in us;
1:1787
教養那如嬰孩者,並等候那呼召之道;
instructing those who are as infants, and awaiting the Word who summons;
1:1788
祂在那些依規矩為虔敬而戰者之爭戰中隱然臨在,親自跑完見證(殉道)之路程;
who, invisibly present in the contests of those who lawfully contend on behalf of piety, runs through the course of martyrdom;
1:1789
因為唯獨祂能勝過感覺與本性;
as being alone able to conquer sense-perception and nature;
1:1790
因為殉道顯然是對感覺與本性之勝利,藉此勝利,心智與理性對抗情慾之奮起得以自然發生;依此奮起,對神之渴慕得以堅固,並弔詭地藉死亡說服愛慕者渡越至所渴慕者那裡;
since martyrdom is clearly a victory over sense-perception and over nature, through which the uprising of mind and reason against the passions naturally comes about, in accordance with which the desire for God is confirmed, paradoxically persuading, through death, those who love him to pass over to the one desired;
1:1791
他說:凡僅為表明基督裡之差異而使用『兩性』一詞者,乃是與阿波利納留為敵;
He who employs, he says, the term of the two natures solely to indicate the difference in Christ, contends against Apollinarius;
1:1792
and he who, in turn, uses the term of the one incarnate nature of God the Word casts out the division of Nestorius.
1:1793
For he who equally flees the impiety of each of these employs both terms.
1:1794
By the same [author], concerning the common and the particular, that is, concerning essence and hypostasis, to Cosmas, the most God-beloved deacon of Alexandria.
1:1795
To the most God-beloved lord Cosmas the deacon, Maximus the humble sends greeting.
1:1796
既然關於神聖成肉身,我們之間已多番論及,而你觸及了敬虔教義中最精微之處,並由此取得契機,要求我這卑微之人——神的人啊——說明何為共相與普遍者;
Since much discourse has arisen among us concerning the divine incarnation, you having touched upon the very subtle dogmas of piety, and having taken occasion from these, you demanded of my humble self, O man of God, to state what the common and the universal is;
1:1797
以及何為殊相與個別者;
and what the particular and the proper is;
1:1798
好叫由此我們得以明白關於聯合之整全道理;
so that from this the whole doctrine of the union might become clear to us;
1:1799
我將絲毫不言己意;
I shall say nothing at all of my own;
1:1800
but I shall state what I was taught by the Fathers, departing in nothing from their teaching on these matters.
1:1801
依教父所言,共相與普遍者——即類名——乃本質與本性;
The common, then, and the universal—that is, the generic—according to the Fathers, is essence and nature;
1:1802
for they say that these are identical with one another.
1:1803
而殊相與個別者,則是位格與位(πρόσωπον);
The particular and the individual, on the other hand, are hypostasis and person;
1:1804
for these too, according to them, are the same as one another.
1:1805
And the great Basil makes this clear, writing thus to Terentius: 'But if we too must state briefly what we think, we shall say this: that essence stands to hypostasis in the same relation as the common stands to the particular.'
1:1806
'Essence and hypostasis have the same difference between them as the common has in relation to the particular,'
1:1807
'for instance, as "animal" relates to "a certain man."' And after other matters he says:
1:1808
'Those who say that essence and hypostasis are the same are compelled to confess only different persons.' And again, teaching a certain rule, he wrote, interpreting the meaning of homoousios:
1:1809
'And this term also corrects the error of Sabellius.'
1:1810
'For it does away with the identity of hypostasis, and introduces the perfect notion of the persons;'
1:1811
'for a thing is not consubstantial with itself, but one thing with another.'
1:1812
'So that it is fitting and pious, both marking out the distinct property of the hypostases and setting forth the invariability of the nature.' And again, in his second letter to the Neocaesareans, he teaches, saying:
1:1813
'For one must know that, just as he who does not confess the community of essence falls into polytheism,'
1:1814
'so he who does not grant the properties of the hypostases is swept away into Judaism.' And again, in the document which he caused Eustathius the Armenian to sign, he is seen writing explicitly:
1:1815
'It is fitting, therefore, to confess clearly that they believe according to the words set forth by our Fathers at Nicaea, and according to the sound sense conveyed by those words,'
1:1816
'for there are some who, even within this creed, corrupt the word of truth, and twist the sense of its words to suit their own will,'
1:1817
'inasmuch as even Marcellus dared, impiously, [to sin] against the hypostasis of our Lord Jesus Christ, and, interpreting him as a mere word (reason), pretended to have derived his starting points from there, wickedly misinterpreting the meaning of homoousios.'
1:1818
'And some, following the impiety of the Libyan Sabellius, supposing hypostasis and essence to be identical, draw from this the grounds for constructing their own blasphemy, from the fact that it is written in the creed: "But if anyone says the Son of God is of a different essence or hypostasis, the holy and catholic Church anathematizes him."'
1:1819
因為那些〔教父〕並未言本質與位格為同一;
For those [Fathers] did not say that essence and hypostasis are the same;
1:1820
for if the terms signified one and the same concept, what need would there be of both?
1:1821
But it is clear that, while some deny [the phrase] “from the essence,” others assert [it as being] “from some other hypostasis”:
1:1822
thus they forbade both as alien to the ecclesiastical mind
1:1823
Since indeed, wherever they made their own view clear, they said the Son is from the essence of the Father, no longer adding “from the hypostasis”:
1:1824
So that the former [expression] is set forth for the refutation of the evil opinion:
1:1825
while the latter contains the manifestation of the salvific doctrine. In agreement with this, Gregory also, surnamed “the Theologian,” in his first theological oration, appears to say the following:
1:1826
“When I speak of the mean, I mean the truth:”
1:1827
“toward which alone it is well to look, both rejecting the base contraction and the more absurd division:”
1:1828
“lest, out of fear of polytheism, the account be contracted into one hypostasis, and we be left with mere names, supposing that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are the same one.” And again, a little further on:
1:1829
“Since it is necessary both to preserve the one God, and to confess the three hypostases:”
1:1830
“that is, three persons, each with its own particular property”
1:1831
“It would thus be preserved, as my argument holds, as one God, since the Son and the Spirit are referred to one cause, without being compounded or conflated:”
1:1832
“while the three hypostases [are preserved], with no conflation, dissolution, or confusion whatsoever being conceived:”
1:1833
“lest the whole be dissolved through the very means by which the One is exalted more than is fitting”
1:1834
“and according to the one and the same movement and will—if I may so name it—of the Godhead, and the identity of essence.” And again in the Farewell Oration:
1:1835
“We believe in the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit:”
1:1836
“consubstantial and of equal glory, in whom also baptism has its consummation:”
1:1837
“you know, you who have been initiated, that it is a renunciation of godlessness and a confession of divinity:”
1:1838
“and thus we are made complete, recognizing on the one hand the one in essence, and in the undivided nature of worship:”
1:1839
“and when I speak of [the three], you are illumined round about by one light, and by three:”
1:1840
“by three, according to the properties, that is, the hypostases, if it is agreeable to anyone to call them so, or else persons:”
1:1841
“for we shall in no way quarrel over names, so long as the syllables lead to the same concept:”
1:1842
“and by one, according to the account of the essence, that is, of the Godhead.” Such was the harmony of the divine dogmas which our God-proclaiming Fathers Gregory and Basil set forth as existing, expressly stating the same thing:
1:1843
[calling] by essence the nature, as common and universal:
1:1844
and by hypostasis the person, as particular and individual:
1:1845
in no way confusing the meaning of what is said, through a mutual interchange and conflation of these terms
1:1846
For, being energized by one and the same Spirit, they have handed down to the peoples the correct confession of the faith
1:1847
And you will find, in agreement with these, that all who by the grace of the Spirit were entrusted with the helm of the Church have also championed the correct account of the pious faith, and have not deviated from this understanding in any way whatsoever
1:1848
A more physical demonstration, showing that none of the things that exist
1:1849
is the same as another both in essence and in hypostasis:
1:1850
but the things that are the same in essence are different in their hypostases:
1:1851
while the things that are the same in hypostasis are altogether different in essence
1:1852
If, then, essence and nature are the same:
1:1853
and person and hypostasis are the same, it is clear that things which are of one nature and consubstantial with one another are, without exception, of different hypostases from one another
1:1854
For, in respect of both—I mean nature and hypostasis—nothing among existing things is the same as another
1:1855
that is, [things of one nature] cannot also possess one person and one hypostasis:
1:1856
and the things united according to one and the same hypostasis, that is, person, could never be joined together according to one and the same essence, that is, nature:
1:1857
that is, being of one and the same essence and nature, they could never be found to have come to be [one, in that respect]
1:1858
But the things united according to one and the same nature, that is, essence:
1:1859
that is, things being of one and the same essence and nature, are distinguished from one another by their hypostases, that is, persons, as is the case with angels and with men, and with all creatures considered in species and genus
1:1860
For angel is distinguished from angel, man from man, ox from ox, and dog from dog according to hypostasis, but not according to nature and essence
1:1861
And the argument will venture to say the greater thing: that not even in the case of that first, beginningless, and creative cause of beings do we observe nature and hypostasis to be the same as one another:
1:1862
since indeed we know one essence and nature of the Godhead, existing in three hypostases differing from one another in their properties:
1:1863
and three hypostases in one and the same essence and nature of the Godhead
1:1864
For it is Unity in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, that is worshipped by us:
1:1865
Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit, one God:
1:1866
the Son not being the Father, but being what the Father is:
1:1867
nor the Spirit being the Son, but being what the Son is:
1:1868
for all that the Father is, except unbegottenness, the Son also is (for he is begotten); and all that the Son is, except begottenness, the Holy Spirit also is (for it proceeds)
1:1869
Unbegottenness, begottenness, and procession do not cut the one nature and power of the ineffable Godhead into three unequal or equal essences and natures:
1:1870
but rather characterize as persons those [realities] in which, or which, the one Godhead—that is, essence and nature—is
1:1871
being constitutive of the person, they differ in respect of the account of the essence, that is, the nature:
1:1872
as is the case with the human soul and body, and with as many things as have their union with one another according to hypostasis
1:1873
For these do not happen to be consubstantial with one another
1:1874
Therefore, the things united according to one and the same essence, that is, nature—that is, being of one and the same essence and nature—are altogether consubstantial with one another, and yet of different hypostases:
1:1875
consubstantial, on account of the essential commonality contemplated in them, unvaryingly, in natural identity:
1:1876
according to which no one is, more than another, that which it both is and is called:
1:1877
but all admit one and the same definition and account of the essence
1:1878
And [they are] of different hypostases, on account of the personal otherness that distinguishes them, according to which one is distinguished from another, not coinciding with one another in the characteristic properties according to hypostasis:
1:1879
but each, by the aggregate of properties belonging to it, bears the most particular account of its own [existence] according to hypostasis:
1:1880
according to which it does not admit communion with things of the same nature and consubstantial with it
1:1881
But the things united according to one and the same hypostasis, that is, person—that is, being constitutive parts, by union, of one and the same hypostasis—are of the same hypostasis as one another, and yet of different essences
1:1882
Of the same hypostasis, on account of the undivided personal unity completed from them through union:
1:1883
according to which the properties that divide each one in respect of its own essential distinctiveness, by virtue of their concurrence with one another in coexisting together, become characteristic marks of the one hypostasis completed from them:
1:1884
according to which the identity with one another is observed, admitting no difference whatsoever:
1:1885
as is the case with the human soul and body
1:1886
For the properties that mark off someone's body from the rest of bodies, and someone's soul from the rest of souls, having come together in union, at one and the same time both characterize and mark off from the rest of men the hypostasis completed from them—of Peter, let us say, or of Paul:
1:1887
but not [do they mark off] the soul of Peter or Paul from its own body
1:1888
For both soul and body are the same as one another, on account of the one hypostasis completed from them through union:
1:1889
because neither of these two subsisted by itself, separated from the other, prior to their composition into the coming-to-be of the species
1:1890
For simultaneous is the generation, simultaneous the composition, and simultaneous also the completion of the species from them according to composition
1:1891
而異質性,則依彼此本性相異之理而言;
But heteroousia is according to the principle of their natural otherness in relation to one another;
1:1892
依此,〔諸事物〕就本質而言,絕不能彼此領受對方的定義與義理;
according to which they in no way admit, in respect of essence, one another's definitions and principles;
1:1893
反之,每一方都使自己在本質上常為相異,與另一方之義理不相符合;
but each renders itself, in respect of its own essence, ever different, incongruent with the principle of the other;
1:1894
according to which, while preserving the essential difference between soul and body, we do not confound the hypostasis completed from them by the mutual conversion and change of the parts — that is, the natures — of which it was composed, a confusion that would result in its annihilation.
1:1895
然而,若依靈魂與身體為生成一物種而同時會合之理,某人乃依本性而得以成全;
But if, according to the concurrence of soul and body together for the generation of a species, a certain man is by nature constituted;
1:1896
一方面,依其自身諸部分本性共通之理,向其餘眾人保全其同本質性;
on the one hand, by reason of the natural commonality of his own parts, preserving consubstantiality with other men;
1:1897
另一方面,依同一〔諸部分〕之特質之理,向其餘眾人保守其異位格性;
and on the other hand, by reason of the particularity of the same parts, preserving toward other men his distinctness of hypostasis;
1:1898
一方面因其自身諸部分依本性之共通性,而與其餘眾人聯合,對彼等他具有依物種而言同一之本性;
being united, on the one hand, to other men by the natural commonality of his own parts, in relation to whom he bears one and the same nature according to species;
1:1899
另一方面,則因其諸部分依位格而有之特質,而與其餘眾人有別,對彼等他具有依位格而言相異且有別之人格;
but being divided from the rest of men, on the other hand, by the hypostatic particularity of his parts, in relation to whom he bears a person other and different according to hypostasis;
1:1900
依此理,他有別於其餘眾人,並將自身不可分之人格性單一體之合一,完全無異地保守著;
by which principle he is distinguished from other men, preserving wholly undivided the unity of his own indivisible personal monad;
1:1901
並依此理,他本性上與其餘眾人聯合,同時保守其自身諸部分本質相異之別,使不相混淆;
and by which principle he is by nature united to other men, preserving unconfused the difference between his parts arising from the essential otherness of his own parts.
1:1902
such has become the principle of the incarnation of the One, God the Word, of the Holy and Consubstantial and Worshipful Trinity.
1:1903
基督一方面因其自身諸部分依本質而與兩端有共通之處而聯合,仍保有諸部分彼此間之差異;
That Christ, being united by the essential commonalities of his own parts to the extremes, preserved the difference of the parts in relation to one another;
1:1904
but by the particularities of the parts, he demonstrated himself to be, according to hypostasis, the same as a whole, common to both.
1:1905
也就是說,他成為完全的人,顯然是藉著取了具有理智且有理性之靈魂的肉身;此肉身在他裡面既得其本性,又得其位格;
that is, he became perfect man, evidently by the assumption of flesh possessing a mind-endowed and rational soul, flesh which received in him both its nature and its hypostasis;
1:1906
也就是說,其存在與其實存,皆在聖言受孕的同時〔獲得〕;
that is, both its being and its subsisting, at the very moment of the Logos's conception;
1:1907
因為聖言自己,代替了種子;
since the Logos himself, instead of seed;
1:1908
或者更確切地說,他甘願成為自己成肉身之種子;於是那依本性為單純且不複合者,依位格而言卻成了複合的;
or rather, was found willingly to be the seed of his own incarnation, and he who was simple and uncomposite according to nature became composite according to hypostasis;
1:1909
他仍是同一位,在其所由構成之諸部分的恆定中,維持不變、不可分、且不相混淆;
one and the same, remaining unchangeable, undivided, and unconfused in the permanence of the parts of which he was constituted;
1:1910
為要使他依位格成為其所由組成之諸部分的中保;
so that he might be, according to hypostasis, a mediator for the parts of which he was composed;
1:1911
在自己裡面接合兩端之間的距離;
joining in himself the distance of the extremes;
1:1912
締造和平,並藉著聖靈,使人性與神、與父,重新和好;
making peace, and reconciling to God and the Father, through the Spirit, human nature;
1:1913
他依本質確實是神,並依經綸確實依本性而成為人;
as being truly God according to essence, and having truly become man by nature according to the economy;
1:1914
既不因其自身諸部分依本性之差異而被分割,也不因同一〔諸部分〕依位格之合一而被混淆;
neither divided by the natural difference of his own parts, nor confused by the hypostatic unity of the same;
1:1915
反之,一方面依其所由組成諸部分依本質而有共通之理,他依本性與父及母聯合,藉此顯明他保全了其所由組成諸部分彼此間之差異;
but, on the one hand, by reason of the essential commonality of the parts of which he was composed, being united by nature to the Father and to the Mother, he showed himself preserving the difference of the parts of which he was composed in relation to one another;
1:1916
but, on the other hand, by reason of the hypostatic particularity of his own parts, being distinguished from the extremes — I mean from the Father and the Mother — he was shown to possess the singularity of his own hypostasis wholly undivided, being ever united in the utmost personal identity of his own parts with one another.
1:1917
For the essential commonality of one of the parts in relation to the extremes, preserving unconfused, within the unity of the one hypostasis, the difference of the other nature, did not permit the pious to recognize one nature of both arising from the union — lest there occur an utter cessation, according to essence, of the parts, namely the generation, by composition, of one nature of the whole out of them, a generation which would have no way to preserve the natural kinship with the parts of the extremes, not preserving after the union the essential difference of the parts, of which it was composed, in relation to one another.
1:1918
but rather it presented one hypostasis to be seen, composite from the union, preserved by the natural existence of the parts of which it was composed.
1:1919
But the hypostatic particularity of one of the parts entering into the composition of Christ as a certain whole, being conceived together with the essential commonality, constituted a common mark of the parts, characterizing the one hypostasis completed from them.
1:1920
For we say that, according to the ineffable union, there has come to be a hypostasis common to flesh and divinity — the one hypostasis of Christ, completed by their concurrence in a union that is natural, that is, true and real.
1:1921
我所謂「共有」,是指那由合一所顯明、對諸部分而言最為特有的、獨一而同一之位格;
I say 'common' in the sense of one and the same hypostasis, most particular to the parts, declared to exist from the union;
1:1922
然而先前〔它〕是無因的、單純且不複合的;
but formerly, without cause, simple and uncomposite;
1:1923
後來則因一項緣故,藉著取了具有理智之靈魂的肉身,不變地、真實地成為複合的;
but afterward, on account of a cause, having become, through the assumption of flesh endowed with a mind-possessing soul, immutably composite in truth;
1:1924
依此〔位格〕,他有別於兩端——我是說有別於父與母——而與自己聯合,毫無任何差異;
according to which, being distinguished from the extremes — I mean from the Father and the Mother — he is united to himself, having no difference whatsoever within himself;
1:1925
免得諸部分依位格而有之同一性完全消滅——亦即依此〔位格〕而生出諸部分之差異——將那依位格之合一,分解為二元人格;
lest there occur a complete cessation of the hypostatic identity of the parts — namely the generation of a difference of the parts according to it, i.e. hypostasis — dissolving the hypostatic union into a duality of persons;
1:1926
having no way to show the personal identity of the parts in relation to one another as preserved, that identity being divided by the hypostatic difference into a duality of persons.
1:1927
一方面,諸部分依位格而共有之事,使那整全者——即基督——有別於兩端;
That, on the one hand, the things common to the parts according to hypostasis distinguished the whole, that is, Christ, from the extremes;
1:1928
but, on the other hand, the things common to the parts, according to essence, in relation to the extremes, joined Christ, as a whole, essentially to the extremes.
1:1929
因為並非藉著使肉身有別於其餘眾人之諸特質,肉身才與聖言保持差異;
For it was not by those properties by which the flesh was distinguished from the rest of men that it maintained its difference from the Logos;
1:1930
nor again was it by those properties by which it differed from the Logos that it was distinguished also from us.
1:1931
反之,正是藉著使肉身與我們有別之諸特質,肉身才保全了它與聖言依位格而有之合一,亦即同一性;
But it was by those properties by which it was distinguished from us that it preserved its hypostatic union with the Logos, that is, its identity;
1:1932
and it was by those properties by which it was naturally united to us that it evidently had its essential difference from the Logos preserved.
1:1933
正如聖言也是如此:正是藉著使他作為子與聖言而有別於神性共有〔特質〕之諸特質,他才向著肉身保全了依位格而有之合一,亦即同一性;
Just as the Logos also, by those properties by which he was distinguished, as Son and Logos, from the commonality of the divinity, by these same properties preserved toward the flesh his hypostatic union, that is, identity;
1:1934
而正是藉著他作為神向肉身所保持之本性差異,他既依本質與父及聖靈聯合,便交替呈現他與自己以及與兩端之間的差異與同一:一方面,藉諸部分依本性而有之共通性,與兩端聯合;另一方面,則藉同一諸部分之特質,依位格而與兩端有別;
and by those properties by which, as God, he maintained the natural difference toward the flesh — by these same properties, being united in essence to the Father and the Spirit, he interchanged the difference and identity in relation to himself and to the extremes: being united to the extremes, on the one hand, by the natural commonalities of the parts, and being distinguished, on the other hand, from the extremes according to hypostasis by the particularities of the same parts;
1:1935
一方面,在其自身諸部分依位格而有之同一性中,向自己彰顯兩端之差異得以保全;
on the one hand, in the hypostatic identity of his own parts, showing the difference of the extremes preserved in relation to himself;
1:1936
but, on the other hand, in the essential otherness of the parts, bearing the natural identity in relation to the parts of the extremes.
1:1937
然而,若他一方面藉諸部分之共通性而與兩端聯合,另一方面又藉諸部分之特質而有別於兩端;
But if, on the one hand, he was united to the extremes by the commonalities of the parts, and, on the other hand, was distinguished from the extremes by the particularities of the parts;
1:1938
it is clear that by those properties by which he was united to the extremes, he had the natural difference of the parts in relation to one another preserved.
1:1939
But by those properties by which he was distinguished from the extremes, he had the hypostatic identity of the parts manifested.
1:1940
由此可見,基督就其所由組成之各部分,兼具共通者與特有者;
Therefore Christ had, in respect of each of the parts of which he was composed, both the common and the particular;
