1:1941
共通者,乃在於兩端與其自身諸部分依本質而有之同一性之理,依此〔理〕,即使在合一之後,他仍保有諸部分彼此間之差異得以保全;
the common, in the principle of the essential identity of the extremes in relation to his own parts, according to which he had the difference of the parts in relation to one another preserved even after the union;
1:1942
but the particular, in the principle of the hypostatic identity of the parts, according to which he was distinguished from the extremes, preserving unconfused his distinction from them.
1:1943
因為真實依位格之合一,就那彼此會合以構成某一整體之各部分而言,依其為生成某一整體而同時會合之理,將區別各部分脫離本質共通性之特質,與共通者一併攝入,並彰顯〔此特質〕乃是「寓於位格者」,而非「位格」本身;
For the true hypostatic union of each of the parts coming together with one another for the composition of a certain whole — according to their concurrence for the generation of a certain whole — having taken up, together with the common element, the property distinguishing each from the essential commonality, shows that property to be enhypostatic, but not a hypostasis;
1:1944
因為〔它〕並未依其自身、以確定的方式獨立實存;
because it did not subsist by itself in a determinate manner;
1:1945
有別於同類之事物,或有別於那藉合一而與它一同共存、以生成某一整體者;
distinguished from things of the same kind, or from that which, by union with it, co-subsists with it for the generation of a certain whole;
1:1946
which is precisely the property of hypostasis.
1:1947
因為那依其自身、以確定的方式構成者,即是位格;
For that which subsists by itself in a determinate manner is hypostasis;
1:1948
誠如他們所言,位格乃是本質連同諸特質,在數目上有別於同類之事物;
since indeed they say hypostasis is essence together with properties, differing numerically from things of the same kind;
1:1949
而「寓於位格者」,則是那絕不依其自身而獨立實存者,乃是在他者中被觀察到的,猶如物種存在於隸屬於它的諸個體之中;
but 'enhypostatic' is that which does not subsist by itself at all, but is contemplated in others, as species is contemplated in the individuals under it;
1:1950
或者,是那與另一在本質上相異者一同組合、以生成某一整體者;
or that which is composed together with another, different according to essence, for the generation of a certain whole;
1:1951
— differentiated from the essence of things of the same kind by its own properties — to that same degree it is united, being identified with, that which is hypostatically composed with it.
1:1952
因為並非藉著使它與同類事物有別之諸特質,它也與那藉合一而與之組合、並與之共同實存者有別;
For it is not by those properties by which it is distinguished from things of the same kind that it is also distinguished from that which is composed with it by union and co-subsists with it;
1:1953
反之,正是藉著使它與同本質者有別之區辨特質,它才向那與之組合者,保守了依合一而有之位格同一性;此同一性乃保持於人格全然唯一之特性中;
but by those distinguishing properties by which it differs from things consubstantial with it, by these same properties it preserves toward that which is composed with it the identity of hypostasis according to union, an identity maintained in the wholly singular character of the person;
1:1954
which the true doctrine proclaims concerning the divine economy, that is, the incarnation.
1:1955
因為正是藉著使肉身有別而與我們相異之諸特質,肉身才與聖言在位格上具有同一性;
For it was by those properties by which the flesh, being distinguished, differed from us, that it had identity with the Logos according to hypostasis;
1:1956
and it was by those properties by which the Logos differed from the Father and the Spirit, being distinguished as Son, that he maintained his singular hypostatic union toward the flesh preserved, in no way whatsoever divided.
1:1957
Therefore the flesh of God the Word did not become a hypostasis.
1:1958
因為肉身從未——即使只是純然思念所能經歷之最短瞬間——曾以其自身、依那些使它有別之特質,全然獨立實存,無論是脫離同類事物、或是脫離那與它依位格組合之聖言,使其特有者與共通者相分離;
For never, not even for so brief a moment as bare conception is by nature able to traverse, did it at all subsist by itself, determinately distinguished from things of the same kind by the properties that distinguish it, or distinguished from the Logos with whom it is hypostatically composed, having its particular property separated from the common;
1:1959
反之,〔肉身〕乃是「寓於位格者」,因它在他裡面、且藉著他,而獲得其存在之生成;
but it was enhypostatic, having received the generation of its being in him and through him;
1:1960
and having become his flesh by union, and being united to him according to hypostasis, by reason of the property that distinguishes it from the rest of men.
1:1961
更清楚地說:按位格,使聖言自身所固有的成為己有;
And to put it more clearly: making its own, according to hypostasis, what is proper to the Word Himself;
1:1962
正如按本質而言那共同者亦然,肉身也因聯合而真實地成了[該共同者的分享者];
just as, indeed, also the [property] common according to essence, of which the flesh too has truly become [a partaker] through union;
1:1963
因為基督既是完全的神,同一位又是完全的人,就其所是之各項而言,他具有共同者與專屬者,並藉此在自身之內成就了兩端的聯合與區分;
For Christ, being perfect God, and the same one perfect man, had, of the things which he was, both the common and the proper, by which he effected within himself the union and distinction of the extremes;
1:1964
一方面藉著兩端與自身的聯合,確證那組成他的兩個本性仍保存在他自身之內;
on the one hand, by the union of the extremes with himself, confirming that the two natures out of which he was composed are preserved within himself;
1:1965
and on the other hand, by the distinction of the extremes with himself, presenting the singularity of his own hypostasis.
1:1966
因為倘若聖言本性是神,藉著取用具理性靈魂的肉身、毫無更易地成為人,那麼顯然他是出於二者的一位,並且藉著這一位[位格]真實地確證自己是二者兼備;同一位就二者而言,兼具共同者與專屬者;
For if the Word, being God by nature, became man without change through the assumption of flesh that was intellectually ensouled, it is clear that he is one out of both, and, in truth confirming himself through the one [hypostasis] to be both, the same one had, of both, both the common and the proper;
1:1967
並藉此對兩端成就了聯合與區分;
by which he effected the union and distinction with respect to the extremes;
1:1968
一方面,藉著自己諸部分彼此間本性上的差異,按本質與兩端相聯合;
on the one hand, by the natural difference of his own parts in relation to one another, being united according to essence with the extremes;
1:1969
and on the other hand, by the identity of the same parts, that is, being distinguished according to hypostasis from the extremes.
1:1970
But if the same one had both difference and identity, it is clear that the same one was both one and two.
1:1971
一方面是一,按其自己按位格不可分之單一而言;
One, on the one hand, by reason of his own undivided monad according to hypostasis;
1:1972
and two, on the other hand, by reason of the otherness, according to essence, of his own parts in relation to one another even after the union.
1:1973
A brief exposition concerning difference, by which it is shown that the quantity according to essence of the things united is preserved:
1:1974
of each part in relation to the other, within the whole composed of them, preserving inviolably the boundary and principle of [its] essence.
1:1975
但若整體對其自己諸部分的同一性——或更清楚地說,諸部分彼此之間、按其組成整體而言的位格上的同一性——也得以保存;
But if also the identity of the whole with respect to its own parts — or rather, to speak more clearly, the hypostatic identity of the parts with one another according to the composition of the whole out of them — is preserved;
1:1976
it is clear that the parts, in no way, according to the one hypostasis completed out of them, differ from one another altogether.
1:1977
And therefore there is no argument at all able to show either that what is different according to essence is confounded, or that what is singular according to hypostasis is divided.
1:1978
A fuller and more natural-philosophical demonstration concerning difference and quantity, and the number that signifies them.
1:1979
既然如此,倘若我們論及基督聯合之後的差異,而按其本性,凡差異必然無不伴隨引入某種量,而我們也知道數目正是標示這量者;那麼,我們合理地只取用數目來標示聯合之後諸相異者的差異,並不藉數目而將所指者完全分割,而是標示那受聯合者得以保存的存在;
Therefore, if indeed we speak of difference in Christ after the union, and quantity is by nature necessarily introduced together with every difference altogether — and we recognize that number is what signifies this [quantity] — then, reasonably taking up number solely for the indication of the difference of the things that differ after the union, we do not at all divide by number the things signified, but we indicate the preserved existence of the things united;
1:1980
because every number is by nature only signifying of quantity, but not divisive.
1:1981
For that which neither acts nor is acted upon — how could it be master of any relation whatsoever?
1:1982
因為施動唯獨屬於本質;
since to act belongs to essence alone;
1:1983
正如受動則屬於附質,亦即屬於性質;
just as also to be acted upon belongs to accident, that is, to quality;
1:1984
from which [essence and accident] those trained in such arguments say that [relations] have their being, and out of which the relations proceed.
1:1985
But rather, as it appears to us more precisely, the relations are not even the work of these — I mean of essence and accident — but of the cause and power productive of all things, which has implanted in each of the things that have come to be a principle constitutive of its being, and representative of its natural affinity and alienation with respect to one another.
1:1986
但若諸關係嚴格說來並不以本質為其施造之因,那麼更遑論以數目[為其因]了;
But if the relations do not properly have essence as their productive cause, then still less would they have number [as their cause];
1:1987
因數目既非本質,就全然不能施動;
which, insofar as it is not essence, cannot act at all;
1:1988
and insofar as it is not accident, that is, quality, it is not by nature able to be acted upon.
1:1989
但若數目本性上既不能施動、也不能受動,那麼它便是標示量的一種記號,對於所標示之量中的關係,絲毫不作任何顯示;
But if number is by nature able neither to act nor to be acted upon, then it is a sign signifying quantity, making no indication whatsoever of the relation within the quantity signified;
1:1990
因為它並非能述說於他物的屬;
since it is not a genus able to be predicated of other things;
1:1991
but, as I said, a sign indicative of the genus that is predicatively borne of other things.
1:1992
但若數目既無施動、亦無受動,那麼顯然,就其不施動而言,它並不標示任何關係,亦即既非聯合、亦非分割;
But if number has neither to act nor to be acted upon, it is clear that, insofar as it does not act, it is not signifying of any relation whatsoever, that is, of union or division;
1:1993
因為此事,如我所言,屬於另一道理;
for this, as I said, belongs to another principle;
1:1994
and insofar as it is not by nature able to be acted upon, it is not divided.
1:1995
因為凡數目就其自身而言皆不可分,不容納那屬於性質所專有的變異之動變;
For every number is in itself undivided, not admitting the motion of alteration, which is proper to quality;
1:1996
也不容納那屬於本質所專有的收縮與擴張;
nor contraction and expansion, which is proper to essence;
1:1997
nor indeed increase and decrease, which is proper to quantity.
1:1998
而若[它標示]量,則並非[標示]關係;
And if [it is signifying] of quantity, then not of relation;
1:1999
因為數目唯獨標示那單純意義下的量,而非那以某種樣態而言的量;
for number is signifying only of quantity taken simply, but not of quantity spoken of in a certain respect;
1:2000
it is clear that number by nature effects neither division nor indeed union, but only the indication of quantity, however we may conceive it to exist.
1:2001
因為,如我所言,施動屬於本質,受動則屬於附質,亦即屬於性質;
For, as I said, to act belongs to essence, and to be acted upon belongs to accident, that is, to quality;
1:2002
of which number is neither.
1:2003
因為倘若它是本質,它就會是自立的,無需藉助他物來構成自身;
For if it were essence, it would also be self-subsistent, not needing another for its constitution;
1:2004
而倘若它是附質,亦即性質,它就會構成那最特有的差異,並與屬相結合,共同構成主體的定義,且提供種的標示,而非量的標示;
and if it were accident, that is, quality, it would either constitute the most special difference, and, being combined with the genus, would draw together the definition of the subject, and would furnish the indication of species, but not of quantity;
1:2005
或者,它與種相結合,就會引入那一般意義下的差異;
or, being conjoined to the species, it would introduce the difference in the common sense;
1:2006
並使那歸於同一種之下的諸個體彼此有所區分;
and it would effect the distinction of one from another among the individuals referred to the same species;
1:2007
and it would show what is signified through it to be not merely distinct from another, but also demonstrated to be different in kind.
1:2008
But if no one at all includes number together in the definitions of things, then number is neither essence nor quality.
1:2009
而若數目二者皆非,那麼顯然它本性上既不能施動,也不能受動;
And if number is none of these, it is clear that it is by nature able neither to act nor to be acted upon;
1:2010
而若數目既無施動,亦無受動,那麼理所當然它既不施行聯合,也不像施動者那樣施行分割;
and if number has neither to act nor to be acted upon, reasonably it neither unites at all, nor divides as one that acts;
1:2011
也絕不像受動者那樣被分割;
nor indeed is it divided at all as one that is acted upon;
1:2012
but, making the indication only of the quantity of things, it does not touch upon their relation.
1:2013
And if number is signifying of quantity alone, and not of any relation whatsoever conceived with respect to it, then number is rather, so to speak, a certain utterance and appellation attached to quantity.
1:2014
Therefore, he who speaks of difference in Christ after the union has certainly also conceived, together with the difference, the quantity of the things that differ.
1:2015
因為那全然單純者,也不能容納差異;
For that which is altogether simple is also incapable of admitting difference;
1:2016
因為它在各方面都與自身同一、且獨一,是整全的、又全然無關係可言,因它不具那屬於量之下、可被述說於它的屬;
since it is in every way identical with itself and singular, and whole and altogether without relation, as not having predicated of it the genus that is within quantity;
1:2017
且因此它全然不被數算;
and for this reason it is altogether not numbered;
1:2018
but he who has conceived quantity together with difference —
1:2019
因為一種全然取消量的差異,是不可能被認知的;
for it is impossible for a difference that altogether removes quantity to be known;
1:2020
他取用數目,僅為標示——而非分割——那與差異一併被設想之量,如此便不悖離真理,因他是藉數目來標示那必然與差異一併被設想的量;
taking up number for the mere indication, and not the division, of the quantity conceived together with the difference, he does not depart from the truth, signifying through number the quantity necessarily conceived together with the difference;
1:2021
因為,如我所言,凡以任何方式言及的差異,皆必然一併設想有量;
since, as I said, quantity is altogether conceived together with every difference, said in whatever manner;
1:2022
of which we have been taught that number is by nature signifying, but not divisive.
1:2023
但若那為了成立此奧祕、藉數目標示那必然與差異一併被設想之量者,更是在意真理,為要不致主張那受聯合者的混淆;
But if he who signifies through number, for the constitution of the mystery, the quantity necessarily conceived together with the difference, cares rather for the truth, so that he may not advocate a confusion of the things united;
1:2024
how is it not right to think, as some hold, that on this account it must be confessed that the essential quantity of the things preserved unconfused in Christ after the union [is affirmed] — since, as the discourse has shown at length, number is by nature apt to make an indication of difference, but not of division?
1:2025
那麼,倘若受聯合的兩者之一按本質而言的道理,於聯合之後仍保持不變,未曾轉入另一者本質的界限之內,那麼顯然基督的神性按本質而言仍是神性,並未轉入肉身的本質;
If, then, the principle according to essence of one of the two things united has remained unaltered after the union, not passing over into the boundary of the essence of the other, then manifestly the divinity of Christ has remained, according to essence, divinity, not having passed over into the essence of the flesh;
1:2026
and again, the humanity of the same one has remained, according to essence, humanity, not having undergone a change into the nature of divinity.
1:2027
But if neither the divinity of Christ nor the humanity have passed over into one another on account of the hypostatic union, but the natures have remained unconfused, according to the great Cyril, then clearly there is, after the union, a difference of the natures preserved in Christ, and no argument will contradict this.
1:2028
而若聯合之後的差異,正屬於那在基督裡不相混淆地被保存者之列;
And if the difference after the union belongs to the things preserved unconfused in Christ;
1:2029
然而一種與量全然分離的差異,是不可能被認知的;
but it is impossible for a difference altogether separated from quantity to be known;
1:2030
let the quantity of the things that differ be spoken for the indication of the difference, lest we be suspected of advocating a difference that is somehow bare and not true.
1:2031
For reason recognizes that every mere distinction is one that does not have, really subsisting as its substrate, the truth of the things of which it is a distinction.
1:2032
We, then, since we never properly say that hypostasis and nature are the same — in accordance with the teaching of the Fathers, as the argument has already shown above — piously maintain in the case of Christ both "the same" and "the different."
1:2033
『同一』,是就一個位格之理而言,依此我們宣認神—道與其己身之肉為同一;
The "same," by the principle of the one hypostasis, according to which we confess God the Word to be identical with his own flesh;
1:2034
lest the all-glorious Trinity receive an addition of person, becoming a quaternity.
1:2035
The "different," by the principle of the essential otherness of the [components] from which he is composed, according to which the parts of Christ in no way change into one another.
1:2036
For divinity and humanity could never become identical in essence, lest anything created be, by virtue of the union, of the same nature and consubstantial with divinity —
1:2037
we know [such a claim] to belong to a deranged mind.
1:2038
For a nature could never by nature be of the same nature and consubstantial [with a nature unlike it in kind].
1:2039
For "of the same nature" and "consubstantial" are properly said only of individuals that are referred back, according to the same species, to a single essence.
1:2040
他若不稱『本性』與『位格』為同一,便是虔誠地論及基督身上的聯合與差異;
That he who does not say that nature and hypostasis are the same speaks piously, concerning Christ, of both the union and the distinction;
1:2041
believing the union to be according to hypostasis, and the distinction according to nature.
1:2042
我們持守此宣認,既不否認聯合之後——那由之組成獨一基督的——諸本性之差異,相信諸本性仍保持不相混淆;
Holding this confession, we neither deny the difference of the natures after the union, out of which the one Christ was composed, believing that the natures have remained unconfused;
1:2043
nor do we ignore the union according to hypostasis, confessing Christ to be one of the holy, consubstantial, and worshipful Trinity.
1:2044
我們並且藉著『數目』,清楚顯明那些構成基督之諸元素——在祂裡面真實地被保存、於聯合之後既不分割亦不混淆——之間的差異,以駁斥亞波里拿留與歐迪奇之混淆謬論;
But we also make manifest, by means of number, the difference of the [natures] from which Christ is, which are truly preserved in him without division and without confusion after the union, in refutation of the confusion of Apollinaris and Eutyches;
1:2045
且既知有依位格而成之聯合,我們便以響亮之聲,針對聶斯多留之分割,提出『神—道成肉身之一性』——即那具有理性靈魂之肉身所成之一性;
and since we know the union according to hypostasis, we set forth, with resounding voice, against the division of Nestorius, the one incarnate nature of God the Word, [incarnate] in flesh possessing a rational soul;
1:2046
while likewise fleeing the confusion of Apollinaris —
1:2047
此人否認聯合之後、被聯合者之本性差異,並主張因聯合之故,肉身與『道』在本性上為同一;
who denies the natural difference of the united [components] after the union, and holds the flesh to be, by reason of the union, the same as the Word according to nature;
1:2048
and [fleeing] the division of Nestorius, who proclaims a hypostatic difference in Christ, and severs the identity of the flesh with the Word according to hypostasis.
1:2049
塞維魯宣稱『本性』與『位格』為同一,因而使『聯合』變成『混淆』,使『差異』變成『分割』;
That Severus, by saying that nature and hypostasis are the same, turns the union into a confusion, and the distinction into a division;
1:2050
依此可見,他一方面將三一之理擴張為四位之數;
by which he is shown, on the one hand, to expand the principle of the Trinity into a quaternity of persons;
1:2051
另一方面又將『單一』之奧祕割裂為二神;
and, on the other hand, to cut the mystery of the Monad into a duality of divinities;
1:2052
and blasphemously to expel Christ from all essential existence.
1:2053
But Severus, holding essence and hypostasis, nature and person, to be properly identical with respect to the divine incarnation, knows the union to be neither unconfused — even though he pretends to say so —
1:2054
nor the distinction to be undivided, even though he also boasts of asserting this;
1:2055
反倒依照亞波里拿留的方式,使聯合成了混淆;
but rather he renders the union a confusion, after the manner of Apollinaris;
1:2056
and the distinction an estrangement, after the manner of Nestorius.
1:2057
For if hypostasis and nature are the same, then according to him the flesh will in no way be either the same as, or other than, the Word.
1:2058
因為當他主張基督裡在聯合之後,仍有『如同本性性質上』之差異時,他自己也將被發現與聶斯多留一同分割了聯合,因為他在聯合之後引入了肉身與『道』依位格而有的差異;
For by asserting that, in Christ, there is a distinction as of natural quality after the union, he too will be found dividing the union together with Nestorius, introducing, after the union, a distinction between the flesh and the Word according to hypostasis;
1:2059
inasmuch as, according to him, a distinction as of natural quality can be understood in no other way than as a distinction in hypostatic quality, if indeed nature and hypostasis are the same.
1:2060
因為他一旦言及『如同本性性質上』之差異,便必然也要附帶引入『如同位格性質上』之差異;
For, in speaking of a distinction as of natural quality, he is under necessity to introduce in addition a distinction as of hypostatic quality as well;
1:2061
in order to show that hypostasis is the same as nature.
1:2062
但若他因懼怕分割,而改稱聯合之後有依位格而有的差異;
But if, fearing division, he speaks instead of a distinction according to hypostasis after the union;
1:2063
那麼,他也不應再稱聯合之後有本性上的差異,若他確實決意要與自己一致、並致力遵守自己為自己所定的規則;
then let him not speak of a natural distinction after the union either, if indeed he has resolved to be consistent with himself, and is intent on keeping the rules he himself has laid down for himself;
1:2064
since he holds nature and hypostasis to be identical with one another, both in definition and in principle.
1:2065
I mean: [if] nature and hypostasis [are the same], then, as Severus supposes, the flesh has no difference from the Word — let it plainly be, according to the folly of Apollinaris, the very same thing, consubstantial and co-hypostatic with him.
1:2066
而若肉身與『道』同質,它也必與聖父及聖靈同質,於是三一便顯為已成四位;
And if the flesh is consubstantial with the Word, it will also be consubstantial with the Father and the Spirit, and the Trinity will be shown to have become a quaternity;
1:2067
since things that are consubstantial do not admit of coalescing with one another into a single hypostasis.
1:2068
But if the flesh is co-hypostatic with the Word, it will be of a different essence in relation to him.
1:2069
For things that are co-hypostatic have, in every way and altogether, a differing principle of essence in relation to one another.
1:2070
但若肉身在聯合之後因與『道』同位格而為異質,則依塞維魯之說,基督在聯合之後便會被發現分裂為兩個本性;
But if, being co-hypostatic with the Word after the union, the flesh is of a different essence, then Christ will be found, according to Severus, divided into two natures after the union;
1:2071
if indeed, according to him, number altogether carries the force of division.
1:2072
Thus everything that contends against the truth is easily overturned by itself and easily falls into ruin.
1:2073
但若他主張聯合之後基督乃一個複合的本性,卻似乎又將『如同本性性質上』之差異附加於其上;
But if, by asserting that after the union there is one composite nature of Christ, he appears to attach to it a distinction as of natural quality;
1:2074
那麼,首先,就其為一複合本性而言,基督將完全不與任何存有之物同質;
then, first, insofar as he is a composite nature, Christ will be altogether consubstantial with none of the things that exist;
1:2075
since, according to essence and nature, Christ is one and unique.
1:2076
For, as has been said, a nature could never be altogether consubstantial with [a different] nature.
1:2077
而既不與任何存有之物同質,祂便將完全既非神,亦非人;
And being consubstantial with none of the things that exist, he will be altogether neither God nor indeed man;
1:2078
或者,若〔說祂是〕神,則主張此說者將被顯明為多神論者,因他一面稱聖父與聖靈為神,視之為單純、非複合之本性;
or, if he is God, then he who maintains this will be shown to be a polytheist, inasmuch as he calls the Father and the Holy Spirit "God" as being of a simple, non-composite nature;
1:2079
另一面又稱基督為神,卻視之為複合、非單純之本性,如此他便將被顯明為宣揚兩個神性;
while calling Christ "God" as being of a composite, non-simple nature — and thus he will be shown to be proclaiming two divinities;
1:2080
one simple, and one composite.
1:2081
此外,當他言及『如同本性性質上』之差異時,若他主張那些性質所屬的諸本性乃作為諸相異性質之基底,則他自己也將被顯明是在聯合之後宣稱有兩個本性;
Furthermore, in speaking of a distinction as of natural quality, if he holds that the natures to which the qualities belong underlie the differing qualities, then he too will be shown to be declaring two natures after the union;
1:2082
thereby becoming, even unwillingly, an advocate for the very doctrines he had fought against.
1:2083
But if he says that the distinction pertains to bare qualities apart from the realities [themselves], then let him also say that the union pertains to these same [bare qualities].
1:2084
因為凡聯合之後有差異者,顯然聯合也正屬於這些事物;
For whatever things possess the distinction after the union, of these same things the union manifestly also holds;
1:2085
如此他便僅用寥寥數語,引入了伊比鳩魯之自發偶然論與摩尼之虛幻妄想,因為照他所言,基督並非真實地存在於實事之中,而僅存在於虛空的性質之中;
and thereby, in but a few syllables, he has introduced the spontaneity of Epicurus and the deceptive fantasy of Mani, since for him Christ does not truly exist in reality, but [only] in empty qualities;
1:2086
and Christ will be God only in quality, and not in reality.
1:2087
For immortality and mortality — of which he says there exists a distinction after the union — belong to natures, but are not themselves natures.
1:2088
For where is mortality, if there is no one who dies? Or where is immortality, if there is no nature that death does not touch?
1:2089
But indeed wickedness is truly irrational, and the mere appearance of wisdom is by nature apt to become the artificer of great folly.
1:2090
And it is more profitable for the discerning to embrace silence toward such men, than, by refuting them, to be thought themselves also to be trifling with the mystery.
1:2091
Severus, then, holding such views concerning Christ, has died along with his own dogmas.
1:2092
然而我們並不如此思想,也不如此相信;『這也不是雅各的分』,那說這話的人如此說;
But we do not think thus, we do not believe thus; "nor is this the portion of Jacob," as he who said it declares;
1:2093
but, confessing that the one Christ — that is, his one hypostasis — was composed of two natures existing perfectly according to their own proper principle of being, namely divinity and humanity, we believe that the natures have remained unconfused, and without any division whatsoever, after the union.
1:2094
For, believing him to be Christ, we have confessed that the natures out of which he was composed are preserved after the union,
1:2095
因為神性與人性在本質上並非同一;
since divinity and humanity are not the same according to essence;
1:2096
卻〔宣認〕依位格而有的同一性;
while [confessing] a hypostatic identity;
1:2097
for the flesh is evidently identical with the Word according to hypostasis.
1:2098
因此,我們既曉得聯合之後、構成基督的諸本性之間真實的差異,便也不忽略依位格而有的同一性;
Knowing, then, the real distinction of the natures out of which Christ was composed, after the union, we are not ignorant of the identity according to hypostasis;
1:2099
因為基督的諸部分,雖然彼此在本性上相異,卻在由它們所組成之整體的位格上並不相異;
inasmuch as the parts of Christ, while differing from one another naturally, do not differ from one another with respect to the hypostasis of the whole composed of them;
1:2100
since it is not in the nature of things for the constitutive parts of a whole to differ altogether from one another with respect to the principle of the whole.
1:2101
故此,我們承認同一位有兩種本性,因而認識祂同時是上帝也是人;
Confessing, then, that the same one is two natures, we have known him to be at once both God and man;
1:2102
since indeed we do not put forth the appellations concerning him as bare words applying to nothing.
1:2103
And believing him to exist in two natures, without division and without confusion after the union, we have proclaimed the same one to be perfect in divinity and the same one perfect in humanity, as a whole existing in parts.
1:2104
因為祂正是由那些部分所組成,而合一之後,祂正是在這些部分之中,被認識為一個整體;
For from the parts of which he was composed, he is known in them, as a whole, after the union;
1:2105
because Christ has no other manifestation of existing, and being preserved, and being properly so named, than the natural persistence—after the union—of the parts of which he was composed, in respect to being;
1:2106
因為基督不僅是「出自」這些部分,更是「在」這些部分之中;若說得更確切,祂就是這些部分本身;
For Christ is not only from these, but in these, and, to speak more properly, he is these things;
1:2107
and after the union we number the things of which Christ [consists], not dividing the natures—far be it!—but making manifest only the difference between them that is preserved after the union.
1:2108
我們依循聖區利羅(Cyril),宣認一種依本性合一而成的會合——即真實而非虛擬的合一——並宣告:至聖童貞女確切而真實地是「上帝之母」;
And we confess a concurrence according to natural union—that is, a true and real one—following holy Cyril, and we proclaim the all-holy Virgin properly and truly to be Theotokos [God-bearer];
1:2109
not simply so, but as one who truly conceived him who was ineffably begotten from God the Father before all the ages, God the Word, and who bore him who was made flesh from her ineffably.
1:2110
我們說,神蹟與受苦都歸於同一位,因為基督顯然是唯一一位,是祂在運作神聖的事與人性的事;
And we say that the miracles and the sufferings belong to the same one, since Christ is evidently one, who works both the divine things and the human things;
1:2111
祂以肉身的方式行出神聖之事,因為祂是藉著肉身——這肉身並未失去其本性的運作——而彰顯出神蹟的能力;
the divine things in a fleshly manner, because through the flesh—which was not devoid of its own natural operation—he put forth the power of the miracles;
1:2112
and the human things in a divine manner, because, apart from any natural compulsion, by his own authority, willingly he accepted the experience of the human passions.
1:2113
我們宣認同一位的十字架、死亡、埋葬與復活,以及升上諸天;
We confess the cross and the death and the burial and the resurrection of the same one, and the ascension into the heavens;
1:2114
祂從那裡不帶肉身降下,並非藉著更換處所而遷移——因為祂絕不可能被任何存在之物所限定;
from whence, having descended without flesh, he did not change place by passing through places—he who is by no means contained by the things that exist;
1:2115
因為祂本是脫離一切限定範圍的;
For he exists free from all circumscription;
1:2116
but he was manifested through the flesh, inasmuch as he is by nature loving toward mankind, becoming, according to a true birth from a woman, capable of being contained, as he willed, having become one of our own kind.
1:2117
既然我們發自內心且親口宣稱,聖童貞女確切是「上帝之母」,並承認位格性的合一,又說一種依本性合一而成的會合已經發生,並宣認唯一的主、基督與聖子,以及上帝、道自己那已成肉身的唯一本性;
If, then, with both soul and mouth we say that the holy Virgin is properly Theotokos, and confess the hypostatic union, and say that a concurrence according to natural union has come about, and profess one Lord and Christ and Son, and one incarnate nature of God the Word himself;
1:2118
and believe that Christ is one of the Holy Trinity, co-worshiped and co-numbered with the Father and the Spirit, how is it that we are reviled by the fearless ones—who dare to say all things falsely—as though dividing him, merely on account of the bare term of number, which is put forth by us, as has often been said, solely to indicate the difference of the natures that is preserved after the union?
1:2119
If, then, number necessarily and altogether effects a division in the quantity of things, let someone demonstrate this, and we shall accept the slander as true.
1:2120
But if they merely do harm by slandering those who proclaim the true faith of the mystery—on account of the love of vainglory from which they suffer—they themselves will give an account to God on the day of judgment, says the divine Apostle, for those whom they have swept away into error, once they themselves have completed the long course of the present life.
1:2121
For it is fitting to speak thus, on account of the commandment that bids us pray for those who curse us.
1:2122
上帝的僕人啊,我如今已就你所詢問之事,向你簡要陳述了以上這些,為要使你得著完全的確信;
I, then, have set forth these things to you in summary concerning what you asked, servant of God, for the sake of your full assurance;
1:2123
並非如某些以塞維魯(Severus)為樂之人所喧嚷散播的那樣,說我內心所持與此不同;
not that I hold otherwise in my soul, as some of those who delight in Severus noisily allege;
1:2124
而對偶然相遇之人卻另作他言;
while speaking otherwise to those whom I happen to meet;
1:2125
do not think this, but I speak as I was taught, and as I think and believe, and as I received from the Fathers.
1:2126
and, to speak more properly, I put forth my very own understanding, embodied in these words.
1:2127
但若這話是虛假的,願我不得那來自彼處的福樂;
But if this word is false, may I not attain to the blessedness that comes from thence;
1:2128
but may I instead carry away, as the fruit of falsehood, alienation from the promised goods.
1:2129
而你,為著我這順從之情,願你紆尊以禱告來回報於我;
But you, on account of my compliance, deign to repay me with your prayers;
1:2130
使我們的上帝基督——那敬畏祂之人的拯救——藉著祂為我們所受、賜生命之苦難的奧秘大能,醫治我靈魂的創傷;
so that Christ our God, the salvation of those who fear him, may heal the wounds of my soul by the power of the mystery of his life-giving sufferings on our behalf;
1:2131
he who alone, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is glorified unto the ages.
1:2132
[Note:] In the definition, he says, the commonality of things identical in essence is beheld.
1:2133
[Note:] That the properties characterizing the composite hypostasis, he says, are common to its parts.
1:2134
[Note:] Definition, that is, the description of the enhypostatic.
1:2135
[Note:] That quantity of which number is indicative is called 'genus/kind.'
1:2136
[Note:] He said 'properly' because their own definitions do not change into one another.
1:2137
〔注〕:因為凡定義不為一者,其理則亦不為一;
[Note:] For of things whose definition is not one, the rational principle is not one;
1:2138
〔注〕:凡理則不為一者,其存在之式亦有別;
[Note:] and of things whose rational principle is not one, the mode of being is different;
1:2139
[Note:] and of things whose mode of being is different, there is no identity throughout all respects between them.
1:2140
〔注〕:因此,本性與位格並非同一;
[Note:] Therefore nature and hypostasis are not the same;
1:2141
[Note:] because the mode of being, and the rational principle, and the definition of these are not properly one.
1:2142
[Note:] Therefore it will be said 'hypostasis' by an extension of the term, and with reference to some incidental thing, but not properly.
1:2143
By the same [author], to the same [addressee].
1:2144
While I was being scourged with many stripes of grief because of what had befallen me from the slander of those who do not fear the Lord, your sacred letter, O holy Father, arriving in good time, brought consolation—to the noble guardian of the virtues, lord George;
1:2145
一則是報來眾人所渴望的、你安康的喜訊;
this, on the one hand, bringing good tidings of your health, which is longed for by all;
1:2146
and this, on the other hand, announcing the steadfastness of your right confession toward the Lord Jesus Christ, our true God.
1:2147
這宣認經過苦難的試煉而得堅固,在你身上化為不可動搖之志——你視今生的厄運如同無物,你昔日早已將今生的順遂視為不足掛齒,並將靈魂全部的渴慕,轉向那唯獨所盼望之事;
This [confession], having been confirmed by the trial of sufferings, was transformed into unchangeableness for you—you who counted the misfortune of the present life as nothing, you who long ago held its good fortune to be of little worth, having transferred the whole longing of your soul toward the things hoped for alone;
1:2148
信與善良的良心,本就使人具備這樣的品格;
whom faith and a good conscience are naturally disposed to characterize;
1:2149
其一即信,守護著敬虔的道理,絲毫不受虛妄意見的玷污;
the one, faith, guarding the pious doctrine, unstained in any way by false opinion;
1:2150
the other, conscience, fashioning a life pleasing to God, set right by the observance of the commandments.
1:2151
因為對那切慕將與智慧同居共處置於萬事之上的人而言,二者——我是說道理與生活——皆不可或缺;
For both are needed—I mean doctrine and life—by the one who has been eager to prefer, above all things, a life shared with wisdom;
1:2152
好使我們也能虔敬地宣講這奧秘:萬有的上帝,藉著肉身、為了我們,行了不變的自我倒空;
so that we may also piously proclaim the mystery of the unchangeable self-emptying, through the flesh, of the God of all, on our behalf;
1:2153
宣認基督真實地同時是上帝,也是人;
confessing that Christ, in truth, is at once both God and man;
1:2154
the latter state, that is, man, having come to be afterward, for our sake.
1:2155
祂既未因所成為的,而丟棄祂原來所是的;
neither putting off what he was on account of what he became;
1:2156
也未因祂原來所是的,而否認祂所成為的;
nor denying what he became on account of what he was;
1:2157
因為唯獨祂——那本然、確切以能力之豐盈存在者——才能夠不經改變、不相混淆地成為祂原本所不是的,同時仍確切地保有祂原來所是的,以及祂所成為的兩者;
for to him alone, who properly exists in a superabundance of power, was it possible to become, without change and without confusion, what he was not, while remaining, properly, both what he was and what he became;
1:2158
〔祂的位格〕在其自身位格性合一之極致的獨一性上,不容分割,因為在祂裡面,合一之後,組成祂的那些部分之間的差異,依本性仍得保存;
his hypostasis not admitting division in the oneness that stands at the very summit of its own hypostatic unity, on account of the difference—naturally preserved in him after the union—between the parts of which he was composed;
1:2159
既然祂依位格與那具有理性靈魂的肉身合一,於是在神蹟之中,祂顯明自己不變地仍保有祂原來所是的;
since, having been united according to hypostasis with flesh that was rationally ensouled, in the miracles he was shown to remain, unchangeably, what he was;
1:2160
while in the sufferings he appeared to preserve, unalterably, what he had become;
1:2161
and through both—I mean the miracles and the sufferings—he granted to us both the abolition of sin and the grace of deification.
1:2162
讓我們以那按誡命而修飾的生活行止,來尊崇這恩典的呼召,無論何等快樂或痛苦,皆不使我們有絲毫動搖;
And let us honor the calling of grace by a manner of life adorned with the commandments, being shaken by no pleasure, nor by any pain whatsoever, in any respect;
1:2163
並藉著我們所行、所受之事,顯明我們唯獨為上帝所持守——祂為我們捨了自己,作贖價與交換——我們已將自己一切的生命,今生與來生,全然交託於祂;
and let us show, through what we do or suffer, that we are held fast by God alone, who gave himself as ransom and exchange for us, having entrusted to him our whole life, both the present and the future;
1:2164
因為我們是本於祂,依「產生」之理而存在;又是藉著祂,依「引導」之式而存在;
as being from him, by the principle of our coming-into-being, and existing through him, by the manner of our guidance;
1:2165
並且將要藉著恩典中的奧秘,即那所盼望的成神,最終安息於祂;
and as destined to come to rest in him, by the mystery, according to grace, of the deification that is hoped for;
1:2166
and may we receive back the ever-abiding well-being, through what now, alas, seems merely to be suffering, having shown, through what we suffer, our disposition hidden toward God, unaltered in any way by the pains that befall us.
