1:1030
但若我們不依此虔敬地按聯合之理,領受並理解聖徒所說的那些單數用語——無論是「神人合一」抑或「一而同類」——反倒設想此運作為本性所有,或又設想為位格所有,我們勢必要教導出「基督為一個本性」之教條;
But if we do not thus piously receive and understand, according to the principle of the union, the expressions spoken singularly by the saints—both the 'theandric' and the 'one and kindred'—but instead suppose this operation to be either natural or, again, hypostatic, we shall of necessity teach as dogma that Christ is one nature;
1:1031
sharing at all in neither of those out of which he consists, since Christ exists according to no nature at all.
1:1032
因為本性斷不可能依本性與〔另一〕本性相通;
For nature could never at all commune with nature according to nature;
1:1033
反之,它無分於任何一方,依本質而言,與一切本性皆全然有別;
but, without participation, it is according to essence wholly different from every nature;
1:1034
若他們稱此運作為本性所有,我們便將得出這樣的結論;
this, then, will be inferred for us, if they call the operation natural;
1:1035
but if, again, they call it hypostatic, we shall alienate him from the Father and the Spirit as regards operation.
1:1036
For by no property characteristic of his own hypostasis
1:1037
would the Son ever commune with the Father and the Spirit.
1:1038
Let us, therefore, by no means wish to confess a natural or hypostatic operation in the case of the Word himself who was incarnate and became perfectly man.
1:1039
因為自他神聖降臨我們以來,直到如今,歷代聖教父中,無一人曾傳下應在他身上宣認本性所有或位格所有之運作的教導;
For none of the holy Fathers, from his divine descent to us until now, has handed down the teaching to confess a natural or hypostatic operation in his case;
1:1040
就我所知,也無人曾明確言及「一個運作」,唯獨蒙神感發的區利羅一人如此;
nor indeed, as far as I know, has any spoken expressly of one operation, except Cyril alone, the divinely inspired;
1:1041
此語我們全心接納,縱然它僅出自他一人,乃是為聯合之故而言;
which we accept wholeheartedly, even though it belongs to him alone, for the sake of the union;
1:1042
how is it not fitting also to receive with great joy the dual expressions of nearly all the holy Fathers—and of him too, again—on account of the natural difference?
1:1043
免得因執著並僅接受他「一」這單一措辭,以致我們使他本人及其他聖徒的言論遭到棄絕與廢除;
lest, by clinging to and accepting only his single expression 'one,' we bring about the rejection and nullification of the words both of him and of the other saints;
1:1044
彷彿宣道之虔敬精確,並未託付於他們任何一人,而僅託付於區利羅一人;
as though the pious precision of the proclamation had been entrusted to none of them, but to Cyril alone;
1:1045
and this precision entrusted not in his other statements, which declare the difference, but only in the one phrase, 'one and kindred operation.'
1:1046
Besides, how do some simply assert one operation in the case of Christ God?
1:1047
For it is necessary that this belong either to his parts, or altogether to him as a whole.
1:1048
但若屬於各部分,它顯然將被劃分,分屬於兩者;
But if it belongs to the parts, it will evidently be apportioned to both, being divided;
1:1049
and suffering this, it will altogether be dissolved, and will dissolve together with itself the things united in it.
1:1050
But if it belongs to the whole, it will be receptive of contraries, being both mortal and immortal, created and uncreated, circumscribed and uncircumscribed.
1:1051
若果如此,則基督擁有其固有之運作,按「擁有」而言為存在,按「闕如」而言則為不存在;
And if this is so, Christ possessed his own operation as at once existing according to possession, and non-existing according to privation;
1:1052
因此運作之故,既按之而運作得宜,故能在同一方面容受相反之兩端;
on account of which, inasmuch as he operated fittingly according to it, he was receptive of the contraries in the same respect;
1:1053
but not in one respect and another.
1:1054
The same may also be said concerning the will.
1:1055
How then did the Logos assume his own flesh as a fellow-worker, according to Cyril the wise, if it did not have the operation according to nature?
1:1056
蓋凡無運作亦無本性之動者,必全然死寂而無生氣;
For that which has neither operation nor natural movement is altogether dead and lifeless;
1:1057
and by what reasoning would he admit the dead thing into cooperation?
1:1058
蓋無運作者,因其全然不動,遂使協作歸於無效;
For that which is without operation, through its utter immobility, renders cooperation void;
1:1059
And how did he show this flesh to be capable of giving life, as Cyril himself again taught, through its natural movements—
1:1060
such as touch, voice, and walking—if these did not belong to it, or were not present in it, according to essence?
1:1061
蓋若此等動作依本質而屬於肉身,則肉身必然具有本性之運作;
For if these belonged to it according to essence, the flesh would certainly have possessed a natural operation;
1:1062
for both the movement of the hands and feet, and the voice in utterance, belong to its essential operation.
1:1063
But if these did not belong to it according to nature, then the Savior did not thereby demonstrate it to be capable of giving life.
1:1064
此乃眾多教導中之少許——蒙您與貴處諸位智慧屬神之聖者所訓誨——因您至聖之命,我雖渺小卑微,仍斗膽藉此淺陋之書信載述,並冒力所不及之事以嘗試;
These few things out of many—having been instructed by the teachings of you and of the God-wise saints among you—on account of your most sacred command, I have made bold to inscribe through this modest letter, and to venture upon matters beyond my power, being small and of little worth;
1:1065
既無敏於構思之心智,亦無善於明晰之言辭,更無端正有序、足以致力於更美善之德行;
having neither a mind apt for the undertaking, nor speech pliant for clarity, nor character well-ordered for release unto the better things;
1:1066
but rather, by grace, being sheltered through your mediation by the all-good God, who also covers the multitude of my sins,
1:1067
so that from this they might show themselves to be mediators of God rather than mere imitators of themselves,
1:1068
his illumination upon all, and his mercy—
1:1069
不僅以擁有之姿蒙得,亦以配得之態施予;
not only having obtained it by possession, but also dispensing it worthily;
1:1070
我亦懇切祈求,願將我這貧乏窮困者之軟弱託付於祂,使我得蒙庇護,免於那因我罪愆而吞噬萬物、有形與無形之烈焰;
to whom I also earnestly beseech that my weakness—that of one poor and needy—be commended, so that I may be sheltered from the flame, visible and invisible, that consumes all things because of my sins;
1:1071
and that I may forever rest and be guarded in the dew of his all-holy and orthodox faith, and of sacred virtue.
1:1072
Behold, the difficulty has been resolved for you.
1:1073
然而,那位偉大者論及神偕同其所取之性而顯現時,稱之為「一,且是出於兩相反者之一」,此乃因按位格之聯合之故;
But God, having come forth together with the assumed nature, the great one called him 'one, and one out of two contraries,' on account of the union according to hypostasis;
1:1074
but he did not take this 'one' to mean nature.
1:1075
To the holy Fathers sojourning in this Christ-loving island of the Sicilians, to abbots and monks, and to the orthodox peoples: Maximus, humble and sinful, unworthy servant—
1:1076
特此曉諭眾人,並向渴慕救恩者宣告:願彼等以至極之神聖之愛,依附於那終極可欲者之本性,藉此喜樂地、若可能則不可解地追求和平之善,無論對己或對眾人皆然;
making known hereby to all, and declaring to those who long for salvation, that, cleaving with utmost divine love to the nature of that ultimate object of desire, they might joyfully and indissolubly pursue thereby the good of peace, toward themselves and toward all, if it be possible;
1:1077
removing every occasion of offense from all, through pious and utmost concord toward one another,
1:1078
因此之故,我這僕人亦竭力渴望,將我先前已以口述所立定者,欣然筆之於書,以為您等至聖諸位之保障與確據,並藉此辯明之詞,除去您等因他人之言而對我這卑微者所生之一切疑慮;
for which reason it was also earnestly my desire, as your servant, to set down eagerly in writing what I had already established by word of mouth, for the security and full assurance of your most holy selves, having through this defense removed every suspicion concerning our humble self that had arisen in you from others;
1:1079
蓋如神學家貴格利所言,我不能容忍那些殷勤留意我等一切事務者——無論所見善否——因我而受創傷;
For I do not tolerate, as Gregory the Theologian says, that any of those who diligently observe all our affairs—whether they stand well or otherwise—should be wounded on my account;
1:1080
蓋惟願在可能與理所容許之範圍內,既不犯罪、亦不被人猜疑,免得使多人跌倒或絆倒,此乃美事;
for it is good, as long as it is possible and reason permits, neither to sin nor to be suspected, so as not to place a stumbling block or offense before the many;
1:1081
since indeed we know how inexorable and most grievous is the punishment from the truthful One upon those who cause even one of the little ones to stumble.
1:1082
I therefore make known to your most holy selves that I have never at any time held the supposition of counterbalancing and contrary dogmas, according to the allegation of those who slander me,
1:1083
蓋論及同一之神——基督,我從未承認、亦未曾撰文主張:於同一主體之內,有一與二——即依彼等所言,共為三——之意願與運作;
for I have neither confessed nor written at all, concerning the same one Christ who is God, that there are, in the same subject, one and two—that is, according to them, three—acts of willing and operations;
1:1084
for the one overturns the other, having no stability of natural reasoning whatever,
1:1085
以致此教義亦不見證於持守真理者,亦即諸位聖教父;
so that this dogma is also unattested by those of the truth, that is, by the holy Fathers;
1:1086
and with whom, according to it, is the incarnate Logos co-operative, that is, consubstantial?
1:1087
For if they should say he is co-operative with the Father, they thereby introduce a twofold divine operation—
1:1088
unless, that is, they confess the third operation fashioned by them not for the abolition of the two natural operations of the same Christ—I mean the divine and the human—
1:1089
蓋若非為要廢除此二者,則顯然彼等乃主張同一基督具有兩種神性運作;
For if it is not for the abolition of the two, it is clear that they profess two divine operations of the same Christ;
1:1090
然若為二,則必是相異之二者;
but if two, then certainly different ones;
1:1091
and hence their own supposition becomes polytheistic, since the divine operation in the Father and the Son is known by them in otherness, and not in natural sameness.
1:1092
此不僅為多神論之見解;
And it is not only a polytheistic opinion;
1:1093
for, by contriving that the Son has no divine operation, they also confound nature and hypostasis with one another, together with the properties belonging to each—
1:1094
並且與撒伯流同持此謬見,將子描述為在此二者——即本性與位格——上皆與父相通,此實為大公教會所不容之異端;
and, agreeing with Sabellius in this same error, they describe the Son as communing with the Father according to each—I mean nature and hypostasis—which is foreign to the Catholic Church;
1:1095
not to mention that, through this common operation with the Son, they also make the Father by nature passible and incarnate, that is, made man, alike in both wonders and sufferings—
1:1096
倘若彼等確實主張子所運作者,除神蹟與苦難之外別無其他,此乃依彼等所杜撰、如前所述之第三運作而言;
if indeed they say that the Son operates nothing other than the wonders and the sufferings, according to the third operation fashioned by them, as has been said;
1:1097
by which operation also, in addition to the divine operation according to nature, they assert that the Only-begotten Logos communes with the Father—
1:1098
But if, hard pressed by these consequences, they say he communes not with the unoriginate Father—
1:1099
but define that the Son communes with his immaculate mother according to this third operation, then here too they furnish him with two created, that is, human, operations—
1:1100
即再度分為本性之運作,與位格之運作二者;
a natural one, once more, and a hypostatic one;
1:1101
由此彼等在此二者上皆使其顯然與父神疏隔;
thereby manifestly alienating him, in respect of each of these, from God the Father;
1:1102
and being swept along together with the division of Arius, according to the complete estrangement, in their view, of the Only-begotten from the Father in both operations—
1:1103
彼等宣稱其為行神蹟者,卻非僅在本性上為能受苦者;
they declare him a worker of wonders, yet not merely passible by nature;
1:1104
誠然彼等主張,基督乃藉彼等所謂之第三運作——或依彼等所樂稱者,即「整體」之運作,亦即「位格」之運作——保有其與我等之親緣;
since indeed they say that Christ, by the third operation according to them—or, as it pleases them to call it, the operation of the whole, that is, of the hypostasis—preserves his kinship toward us;
1:1105
according to which, as one who willingly admits not only the experience of the sufferings but also displays the power of the wonders, they suitably recognize him—which is impossible.
1:1106
蓋同一之運作,或意願,或本性,斷無可能同時既為神性、又為人性;
For it is not possible that the same and one operation, or act of willing, or nature at all, should be at the same time both divine and human;
1:1107
亦不可能同時既是複合、又是非複合;
or at once composite and uncomposite;
1:1108
以致子能藉此同一之運作,對此二者——即父與母——皆依本性、不變地保有其親緣;
so that by this same and one operation toward each—I mean the Father and the Mother—the Son should preserve his kinship by nature, unaltered;
1:1109
or should perform both—I mean the divine things by nature, and the human things—according to this same operation.
1:1110
For not even those who fashion goat-stags would conceive of this.
1:1111
But if it is impossible that the same operation, or act of willing, or nature, should at once by nature be both divine and human—
1:1112
or that the Son should commune with each—I mean with the Father and the Mother—according to this same and one operation, or should perform both, the divine things and the human things—
1:1113
but rather, more fittingly, as has been said,
1:1114
by the divine operation, the divine things; and by the human operation that belongs to him, the human things—
1:1115
yet together with the communion and connaturality of the one with the other, but not divisibly—
1:1116
therefore the third operation, according to them, is also nameless as non-existent, being confirmed by no reasoning at all, whether divine, or belonging wholly to the Father.
1:1117
'And what,' they say, 'do we furnish to the whole, if we do not give the one operation to the one whole on account of the union?'
1:1118
But those who put forth these arguments did not even know what they were saying.
1:1119
蓋彼等妄以為整體乃異於其自身所固有之各部分——此整體正是由此諸部分所構成、亦存於此諸部分之中——遂不知何故堅稱:異於諸部分依本性所固有者之某物,必須被附加於此整體之上,作為整體所有;此說非出於論證,僅出於武斷之聲言;
For, supposing the whole to be something other than its own proper parts, out of which and in which it is constituted, they somehow insist—not from demonstration, but from mere assertion—that something other than what naturally inheres in the parts must be attached to the whole, as to a whole;
1:1120
I mean, namely, the one operation.
1:1121
and then in this way assign to him yet again, as to a whole, another operation, besides the essential operations inherent in the parts—
1:1122
But if they do not assign another existence according to nature, then evidently they should not assign to the whole another operation according to nature either, besides that of the parts—
1:1123
For Christ, being each of the two according to nature—
1:1124
for the same one is by nature God and man—
1:1125
he has, according to nature, the properties proper to each nature—
1:1126
I mean, the divine will and operation, and the human will and operation—
1:1127
but not one only, to the abolition of the two natural operations—
1:1128
nor another besides the two according to nature—
1:1129
that is, three operations and wills
1:1130
Each, therefore, just as an essence, so also each essential will and operation, we ascribe according to nature to the same and only Christ
1:1131
For if, contemplating the difference of the same one's parts, we fittingly assign the divine things to his divinity, and the human things to his humanity—
1:1132
yet conversely, on account of the union, we attach the properties proper to each nature to the other by way of exchange—
1:1133
whence we also call him God passible against sin, and flesh—
1:1134
assumed, and become that which anointed it—
1:1135
and — I make bold to say — co-divine, according to Gregory the Theologian—
1:1136
he performed the divine things not by bare Godhead alone—
1:1137
but through flesh endowed with a rational soul, and united to him according to hypostasis—
1:1138
not with bare divinity, as formerly—
1:1139
nor did he perform the human things merely as man—
1:1140
but by an authority of unlimited power, and not subject to necessity
1:1141
For the suffering was not, as with us, a matter of createdness, but the self-emptying, on our behalf, of the Word made flesh
1:1142
Nevertheless, we attribute all things according to nature belonging to the natures of which he consists to the same one and only whole Christ, sin alone excepted—
1:1143
wherefore we confess the same one both passible and impassible—
1:1144
circumscribed and uncircumscribed—
1:1145
comprehensible and incomprehensible according to nature, we confess
1:1146
again circumscribing the result of the same one's two natural operations, that is, the divine sign wrought by the Savior God toward others (namely, men)—
1:1147
such as the resurrection, or the ascension, or the cleansing, or some other such wonder-working—they claim this to be one and the same operation; but not even in this way is their argument well-founded
1:1148
For we know not one, but many and countless signs of the Savior, concerning which the most theological John says: "If they should be written one by one, I do not suppose that the world itself could contain the books that would be written."
1:1149
Moreover, by the things that occur externally, we do not at all recognize the essential existence — not in the case of any other being, much less need one say in the case of the Word of God himself, who is above all beings and who was incarnate for our sake—
1:1150
but by the natural properties by which he himself is characterized in himself—
1:1151
that is to say, by his natural acts of willing and operations—
1:1152
otherwise, in this way, one would also define the carpenter as a wood-working animal, but not as rational, nor as mortal—
1:1153
they would define his nature, perhaps, from the chair or the bed, but would not be recognizing it from the properties that essentially constitute it—
1:1154
Whence we recognize, properly speaking, that the same one is by nature God and man, on no other basis than from the innate properties that characterize him both divinely and humanly at once—
1:1155
that is, both the divine will and operation, as I said, and the human will and operation of the same one—
1:1156
by which, and through which, he sets his seal upon what he was and what he became—
1:1157
working wonders on our behalf as God, voluntarily—
1:1158
and the same one suffering on our account, voluntarily, as man—
1:1159
since he is recognized as nothing other than that of which, in which, and which he is — not as some illegitimate and intermediate thing, that is, a third result, after the manner of mules—
1:1160
as the myth-fabrication of the empty-talking heretics fantastically prattles, having strayed from the pious preaching of the holy Fathers — but he, in truth and properly, is precisely those things of which, and in which, he truly and properly is
1:1161
for existing according to nature from divinity and humanity, and in divinity and humanity—
1:1162
Christ is by nature God and man—
1:1163
and nothing else whatsoever
1:1164
And how is it, they say, that the wise Cyril declares that one should hold a certain middle rank of the expressions concerning Christ, writing thus to Acacius?
1:1165
"For some of the expressions are especially befitting God—
1:1166
and others, again, are in this way befitting man—
1:1167
and others hold a certain middle rank"
1:1168
And how could this ever contribute anything to their own supposition? For it is not by change, or by casting off, of the extremes — I mean the divinity of Christ and his humanity—
1:1169
or of the same one's divine and human will and operation, that some other middle thing arises, that is, an intermediate result, sharing in neither of the natures of which he consists—
1:1170
or again, that he has some composite operation, being such according to them, or possessing such — this is not what the teacher hands down to us in these words; but rather that these things properly are the natures of which he consists—
1:1171
yet these are not named in a divided manner—
1:1172
but together, and in one and the same subject, each of these — since Christ is one and only
1:1173
And he himself testifies concerning these things, defending the Eastern bishops, and writing thus to Acacius: "Now the brethren in Antioch in no way divide the things that have been united—
1:1174
but they maintain that only the expressions concerning the Lord are divided—
1:1175
and that some are fitting to his divinity, and others again to his humanity"
1:1176
"For the same one is God and man—
1:1177
and they say there are also others that have been made common in a certain manner, and, as it were, looking to both—
1:1178
I mean, divinity and humanity—
1:1179
What do I mean by this? For some of the expressions are especially befitting God, and others again are in this way befitting man—
1:1180
and others hold a certain middle rank, manifesting the Son of God to be God and man at once and in the same subject"
1:1181
signifying that Christ is something else besides the natures of which, in which, and which he is, as some have supposed—
1:1182
but that the same one exists according to nature as God and man together
1:1183
And he adduces the divinely inspired Scriptures in proof of these things, saying thus:
1:1184
"Whenever he says to Philip, 'So long a time am I with you, and you have not known me, Philip—'
1:1185
'do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?'
1:1186
'he who has seen me has seen the Father also—'
1:1187
and, 'I and the Father are one' — we affirm this expression to be most befitting God
1:1188
But when he rebukes the crowds of the Jews, saying that, 'If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham—'
1:1189
'but now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you—'
1:1190
'this Abraham did not do—'"
1:1191
We say that such things have been spoken in a manner befitting man.
1:1192
But of the one Son [there are] both the expressions befitting God, and indeed also the human ones.
1:1193
And we affirm that those are the middle expressions, as for instance when the blessed Paul writes: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever."
1:1194
"One God the Father, from whom are all things, and we from him;"
1:1195
"and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him."
1:1196
"whose are the fathers, and from whom is Christ according to the flesh, he who is God over all, blessed forever, amen."
1:1197
因為看哪,看哪,這位稱祂為基督耶穌的人,說祂昨日、今日是一樣的,直到永遠;
For behold, behold, he who named him Christ Jesus says that he is the same yesterday and today, and forever;
1:1198
又說萬物都是藉著祂而有的;
and that all things came into being through him;
1:1199
並稱那按肉身出於猶太人的一位,為在萬有之上的神;
and he names the one who is according to the flesh from the Jews, God over all;
1:1200
and indeed blessed forever, amen.
1:1201
因此,不可在這些事上,將論及主的種種說法割裂開來;
Do not, then, divide in these matters the expressions [predicated] of the Lord;
1:1202
因為這些說法,在同一位[主體]身上,同時兼具合乎神之尊嚴者,與屬人者;
for they hold together, in the same [subject], both what is befitting God and what is human;
1:1203
而應當把它們都應用於那獨一的子,亦即已成肉身的神・道;
rather, apply them to the one Son, that is, to God the Word incarnate;
1:1204
因此他吩咐,必須不可分割地將這些說法應用於祂,因為祂既是同一位神,本性上又確實是人;
whence he enjoins that these must be applied to him without division, as to the same one, who is God, and who by nature is also man;
1:1205
and, as I have said, nothing else at all besides this.
1:1206
"And indeed," they say, "concerning Christ he himself too confesses one operation."
1:1207
For thus, in interpreting the holy evangelist John, he proceeds to say: "And indeed, when he raised up the little daughter of the ruler of the synagogue, saying —
1:1208
he took hold of her hand, as it is written —
1:1209
一方面,祂以神的身分,藉著那全能成事的命令賜予生命;
on the one hand giving life as God, by his all-effecting command;
1:1210
另一方面,祂又藉著自己肉身的觸摸賜予生命;
and on the other hand, again, giving life also through the touch of his own flesh;
1:1211
thereby displaying, through both, one and kindred operation."
1:1212
But this indeed also holds the teacher's meaning quite unconcealed —
1:1213
也就是說,他並非在為構成那獨一基督的兩個本質,各自界定一個運作,如某些人或許會臆測的那樣;
namely, that he does not define one operation belonging to each of the essences from which the one and only Christ consists, as some might suppose;
1:1214
since indeed he himself declares, in [the treatise] Against Hermias, saying:
1:1215
「凡獲得同一本性的事物,其運作理當相似;
"For things that have obtained the same nature would operate alike;
1:1216
but for those whose principle of how they exist has been altered, for these the principle of their operation towards all things would likewise not be the same.
1:1217
For things that are of the same operation are also acknowledged to be of the same essence."
1:1218
But this does not signify that the natures are different, since they converge upon the same as one another through the invariable identity of operation.
1:1219
"For things that are of the same operation are also acknowledged to be of the same essence," he says.
1:1220
然而,若兩者皆屬不當——既與自身相牴牾,又不承認構成基督之諸本性彼此有別——那麼顯然,他並非在為那兩個本質、亦即由其組成之基督,各自傳授一個運作;
But if it is improper on both counts — both to be at variance with oneself, and not to profess the natures from which Christ is [composed] as differing — it is clear that he does not hand down one operation belonging to each of the essences, that is, of Christ who is composed of them;
1:1221
by saying, "showing through both one and kindred operation" —
1:1222
[meaning] that the Word brings forth his life-giving operation, which by nature is also divine, both incorporeally and through the body.
1:1223
因為他說「同源」,所指無非就是同一個賜生命的運作——這運作藉著那全能成事的命令,以及祂聖潔肉身的觸摸這兩者,在神蹟中顯現出來;
For in saying "kindred," he signified nothing other than the same life-giving operation — manifested in the miracles through both, namely the all-effecting command and the touch of his holy flesh;
1:1224
just as fire too, whether burning immaterially or through matter, displays in either case the same power to burn.
1:1225
由此可見,這位教師說這些話,並非為要廢除救主那屬人的運作;
Therefore, the teacher does not say these things for the abolition of the Savior's human operation;
1:1226
因為他一提及肉身的觸摸,便已明顯指明那屬人的運作;
for in speaking of the touch of the flesh, he clearly signified the human [operation];
1:1227
既然觸覺確實是屬人運作的明證;
since indeed the [faculty] of touch is a clear proof of the human operation;
1:1228
但他也並未憑己意,在那按本性而有的兩個運作之外,另傳授一個運作;
but neither has he handed down, on his own part, another [operation] in addition to the two according to nature;
1:1229
rather, he has made clear that the operation which is life-giving by nature, as has been said, through both —
1:1230
the operation of the command and of the touch — proceeds from one and the same God the Word.
1:1231
But if, hemmed in by these pious proclamations of the Fathers, they bring forward the letter of Heraclianus to Achillius, according to which they insinuate that he too speaks, besides the two, of one nature in Christ, as of a whole, and one motion — let them explain this themselves.
1:1232
其一,是主那作為整體、就其自身而言的本性與運動;
One, on the one hand, is the whole nature and motion of the Lord, considered in itself;
1:1233
其二,是諸部分按「歸屬」而言的運動與本性;
one, on the other hand, is the motion and nature of the parts according to appropriation;
1:1234
by this I wish to signify operation and passion.
1:1235
因此,那些搬出這些話來鞏固自家教義的人,實有必要以論證闡明:主那作為整體的一個本性與運動,究竟是甚麼、如何被如此稱呼、又由哪位獲認可的教父作證;
It is necessary, then, that those who put forward these things as a fortification of their own doctrines should clarify by argument: what is the one nature and motion of the Lord as a whole, and how it is so termed, and by which of the approved Fathers it has been attested;
1:1236
以及按「關係」而言的那兩者,究竟是甚麼;
and what the two according to reference are;
1:1237
又同樣,諸部分按「歸屬」而言的那一個本性與運動,究竟是甚麼;
and likewise what the one nature and motion of the parts according to appropriation is;
1:1238
and what the two [taken] in themselves are —
1:1239
that is, these three pairs of the same [Lord's] natures and motions.
1:1240
And who has handed down that the same and one motion signifies each of the two —
1:1241
I mean operation and passion —
1:1242
又若依他們所言,兩者確實皆然,那麼何以子不會在祂的一切運動上,與父有所分別,成為在一切事上按本性皆屬受動之物;
and how, if indeed both apply according to them, is the Son not marked off from the Father in respect of his every motion, as being by nature passible in every case;
1:1243
if indeed the motion of God and Savior, in whatever manner it is designated, does not signify each — that is, operation and passion together.
1:1244
For the Divine is by nature impassible, and without relation, and simple —
1:1245
or rather, more simple than all simplicity.
1:1246
又如何他們不會因這三組運動的配對,而引入十二個運作與受動呢,若依他們所言,運動確實同時指明這兩者;
And how again do they not introduce twelve operations and passions through the three pairs of motions, if indeed motion signifies both according to them;
1:1247
and which of the saints has set forth the natures in Christ God according to reference, or according to appropriation?
1:1248
Let them show these things first from patristic judgment, and then thus, from this, the presumption of their own doctrines will be ratified for them.
1:1249
But if they are unable, let them henceforth abandon these things, and align themselves, together with us alone, with what has been piously judged, both from the God-bearing Fathers of the Catholic Church, and from the five holy ecumenical councils —
1:1250
承認同一位、獨一無二的主暨神耶穌基督,按本性乃是全然完美的神,也按本性乃是全然完美的人,唯獨無罪;
confessing the same one and only Lord and God Jesus Christ [to be] God by nature perfect in every respect, and man by nature perfect in every respect, sin alone excepted;
1:1251
and knowing that they do not, by abolishing what in both [natures] is by nature perfect in every respect, jointly destroy the divine or the human will and operation of the same [Christ] — [knowing] that neither what he was, without beginning and without cause, nor what he became afterward on account of a cause —
1:1252
that is, our salvation — did the supra-essential Word in any way at all diminish, or alter, or obliterate.
1:1253
反倒是完整而全然地——唯獨罪除外——祂在自己裡面、並藉著自己,在一切方面、於一切事上,保全了這一切;正如我所說,是按本性的存在,恰如其分地保全了它們本身;
But rather, wholly and perfectly, apart from sin alone, in himself and through himself, in every respect and in all things, he preserved them — these very things, properly, as I have said, according to an existence that is natural;
1:1254
whence the same one, only, and one Lord and God of ours, being by nature possessed of will and operative, according to each of his natures — the natures from which and in which he consists — is [the author]
1:1255
我們救恩的成就者:祂並未成為一個無心智的人,也未成為一個不分享我們共有之本性生命者——那生命乃是藉祂的創造之工,從祂獲得其存在;
the Author of our salvation: he did not become a mindless man, or one without a share in the natural life that is common to us, that life which by his act of creation obtains its being from him;
1:1256
反倒是,那按本性且獨一是神者,如實地成為了一個有心智的人,亦即按本性具有意志且具運作力的人;
but rather, in truth, he who by nature and alone is God became a man endowed with mind, that is, by nature possessed of will and operative;
1:1257
祂承受了我的全部,連同屬我的一切,為要將救恩賜給我的全部;
having assumed the whole of me together with what is mine, that he might grant salvation to the whole of me;
1:1258
祂已全然廢除了罪的定罪,因為凡未被承受者,就不得醫治;
having wholly dissolved the condemnation of sin, since that which is not assumed is unhealed;
1:1259
but that which has been united to God, this too is saved, as he who bears the name of theology says.
1:1260
But since, [even] against these very pious teachings of the holy Fathers, by which we cast off the irrational objection of those unequally yoked [with error], they assail us from yet another quarter —
1:1261
我方之人對我方陣營的侵犯;
the incursion of our own people against our own side;
1:1262
或者不如說,是藉呈出一封書信,對較為純樸之人所行的擄掠——即那據稱是我們寫給長老馬林努斯的書信;
or rather, the seizing of the more guileless, by producing a letter — namely, the one said to have been written by us to Marinus the presbyter;
1:1263
以及關於致皮魯斯的那封信,也有必要就此略陳數語;
and of the letter to Pyrrhus, it is necessary also to say a few words concerning these matters;
1:1264
在一切事上使你們的聖德充分知悉:我們曾就聖經中種種篇章,多次寫信給長老馬林努斯;
fully informing your holiness in all things, that we have written variously to Marinus the presbyter concerning various chapters of Scripture;
1:1265
然而絕非如人所妄稱、我們曾以此種方式論及那彼此對峙、互相矛盾的教義;
yet certainly not in whatever manner it has been alleged that we spoke concerning these counterpoised and contrary doctrines, in this way;
1:1266
亦即,我是說,一與二——也就是他們虛構、加諸於同一位基督身上的三種運作或意願;
namely, of the one, I say, and of the two — that is, of the three operations or acts of will which they fabricate as belonging to the same and one Christ;
1:1267
as though we, by establishing these concerning him, made them equal in rank to those, or related them to some other thing entirely —
1:1268
「我若重建那我所拆毀的,便證明自己是個犯罪的人,」蒙揀選的器皿如此說;
"For if I build up again the things which I tore down, I show myself a transgressor," says the Vessel of Election;
1:1269
因此,這封被如此炮製出來——或者更確切地說是被虛構出來、彷彿出自我們之手、致馬林努斯的書信,實則全然與我們無關、並非我們所作,我們自己已將其棄絕,也懇請凡虔誠宣認主者,都與我們一同棄絕之;
Wherefore also the letter to Marinus thus put forward, or rather fabricated, as though coming from us, being wholly foreign and not ours, we ourselves cast away, and we exhort all who piously confess the Lord likewise to cast it away as we do;
1:1270
如此我們方能杜絕一切機會,不容那些「在罪中尋藉口」的敵對者可乘之機,也不容他們以對我們的誣衊,來掩蓋自己言行不一的矛盾;
so that we may wall off every occasion from our adversaries, who allege pretexts for their sins, and who make the slander raised against us a cover for their own inconsistency;
1:1271
他們既無法憑自己的論證站立得住——因其論證早被真理的猛攻所摧毀——便藉著那所謂出於我們之手書信的偽裝,圖謀對較為單純之人施行狡詐的滲透;
who, since they cannot establish themselves by their own argument — which is destroyed by the assault of the truth — contrive for themselves, under the mask of our supposed letter, a deceitful infiltration against the more simple-minded;
1:1272
而那些寧取真理、不取虛謊的人,若肯採信我們就此事所作的辯白,此後便再不會蒙受、也不會施行此種滲透了;
which, henceforth, those who prefer the truth to falsehood would neither suffer nor perpetrate, giving preference to our own defense concerning these matters;
1:1273
至於皮魯斯,他先前曾致我們一封篇幅浩繁的長論,且在其中,不知何故,對我們大加尊崇;
But again, as regards Pyrrhus, who had earlier written to us a lengthy tome, and who, I know not how, greatly honored us in it;
1:1274
而他在那論著中,是以探問而非斷言的方式,就同一位基督的一種運作與兩種運作展開論述;
and who, by way of inquiry and not of assertion, in that very tome made his argument concerning the one and the two operations of the same Christ;
1:1275
他彷彿是在徵求我們的裁斷,並邀請我們就雙方論點作出判斷與評議——因此我們也理所當然地,在致他書信的引言中,回報以尊崇,藉此成就使徒的勸勉;
and who was, as it were, seeking our own judgment, and inviting our decision and opinion concerning each argument — we too, fittingly, in the preface of our letter to him, honored him in return, fulfilling the apostolic exhortation;
1:1276
「要在尊敬上彼此謙讓,」神聖的使徒如此說;
"For in honor preferring one another," says the divine Apostle;
1:1277
因為神聖的話語甚至吩咐我們,要愛並祝福那些持異見、或懷敵意致書於我們的人;
since indeed the divine word also bids us love and bless even those who hold different views, or who write to us with hostility;
1:1278
同時,我也竭力留心,不使他心生激憤;
And at the same time it was my earnest concern not to exasperate him;
1:1279
反倒藉著對他的讚譽來安撫其人,使他能就此贊同我依照諸聖教父之教導、虔誠所立之教義;
but rather to conciliate the man, by praises directed toward him, so that he might come to assent to what had been piously set forth as doctrine by me, according to the teaching of the holy Fathers;
1:1280
因此我也承認:在我為他所撰的那篇論文中,我是以此種善意的方式,來理解他寫給我的內容的;
wherefore also I acknowledged that, in the treatise I had composed for him, I had understood in this favorable sense the things written to me by him;
1:1281
如我所言,我彷彿是在敦促他、邀請他歸向虔誠的教義——那教義必為他帶來最大的救恩——倘若他真能欣然接受,並如我們所寫的那樣,與我們一同宣認;
urging him on, as it were, as I said, and inviting him to assent to the pious doctrine, which would procure for him the greatest salvation — if indeed, embracing this, he confessed it together with us, as we have written;
1:1282
也就是宣認同一位獨一的我等神——基督——擁有兩種本性的運作,正如祂也擁有無混合、無分割地聯合的兩個本性,即神性與人性;
that is, confessing two natural operations of the same and one Christ our God, just as also two natures united without confusion and without division, divine and human;
