1:1283
因為,就我們同一位獨一的主與神而論,主張一種單一的運作、或意志、或本性的教義,並非教父的教訓,而是異端;
For the doctrine of one and the same operation, or will, or nature, concerning the same and one Lord and God of ours, is not patristic but rather heretical;
1:1284
以上便是我們對彼人——即皮魯斯——所施讚譽的方式,其目的乃在於溫和地引他脫離那相悖的見解,並引導他重返正確的信仰教義;
Such, then, was the manner of our praise toward that man, namely Pyrrhus, as we were eager gently to draw him away from the opposing opinion, and to lead him back up to the correct doctrine of the faith;
1:1285
但若有人未能明白我們的用意,仍對此番讚譽心懷不悅,尤其不接受我們在此事上所行權宜之道的緣由,那麼就任憑他隨意棄絕、拋卻這番讚譽罷;因為在那人徹底背離之後,這讚譽於我們而言,也已不再可喜,反倒令人反感了;
But if anyone, missing our purpose, is still displeased at this praise, not accepting the reasoning of our economy especially in this matter, let the praise be set aside and cast away for him as he sees fit, being no longer pleasing to us either, but rather distasteful, after the man's complete apostasy;
1:1286
然而,凡曾正統地向他所立之教義,其效力仍當與我們同在、繼續有效;
but let the force of what was orthodoxly set forth as doctrine to him remain valid together with us;
1:1287
諸位聖父,你們已藉我們的辯白,得著使人完全確信的道理;
You have, holy Fathers, the account of full assurance through our defense;
1:1288
只是你們要作大丈夫,要心靈剛強,不因敵對之人與教義而偏向左右;
but be manly, and be strengthened in spirit, not turning aside to the right or to the left, on account of adversary men and doctrines;
1:1289
反倒當在那說「我就是道路、生命、真理」者所立的王道上,堅立並蒙其引導,同心合意、思念相同之事——「願賜平安的神與你們眾人同在」——祂永遠被虔誠地宣講,也被你們虔敬地敬拜;
but being established and guided along the royal road by him who said, "I am the way, and the life, and the truth," being of one soul, minding the same thing — "and the God of peace shall be with you all" — ever piously proclaimed, and devoutly worshiped by you;
1:1290
並且,作為你們在此世蒙福生活與宣認之終局,祂將在彼世親自賜予你們更為蒙福的基業與安息;
and, as the goal of your blessed conduct and confession here, offering himself there as a more blessed inheritance and rest to you;
1:1291
with whom, to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, honor, dominion, and worship, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
1:1292
蒙神的律法、依神引導的、為神所尊之父啊,你棄絕了人的常規,藉自我倒空超越了節制,又藉貧乏,將我在思考與言說上的無知——或更確切地說,是我的鹵莽——尊崇為完備;
Guided according to God by the divine law, O father honored by God, you disregarded human custom, surpassing moderation through self-emptying, and through poverty magnifying as complete my inexperience in thinking and speaking — or, to speak more properly, my rashness;
1:1293
因為我並不羞於按理坦承自己的過失與軟弱的種種情慾,並且你出於仁愛而竭力遮掩它們到何等地步,我便更加樂意將其揭露到何等地步;
for I am not ashamed duly to confess my own faults and the passions of my weakness, and to reveal them with all the more eagerness in the measure that you were zealous, out of loving-kindness, to conceal them;
1:1294
因為,有誰曾如你這般,接納無理之人的言語,接受狂亂心智的見解——更不用說是全然如此了——或如你這般尊崇我的言辭,為神所尊之父啊?你不僅出於愛而寬容了我的無學,更將其極力尊崇;
For who would ever so have welcomed the speech of one bereft of reason, and received the mind of a frenzied understanding — not to say entirely so — or so honored mine, O father honored by God, as you have: not only having, out of love, overlooked my lack of learning, but having honored it in the extreme;
1:1295
這確實是件極大的事,為那本無章法之物增添了美名;而且,你更藉恩典施予那份你素來用以極美地修飾自己心思的敬重,使其被過度地增光添彩;
which indeed was a very great thing, lending good repute to what was disordered; but also, inasmuch as, by grace, applying that reverence with which you are wont most excellently to adorn your own understanding, you illumined it to excess;
1:1296
由此便構成了真實高貴——或更真確、更恰當地說,即與神相親——的道理與方式;
from which both the reason and the manner of true nobility are constituted — or, to speak more truly and more fittingly, of kinship with God;
1:1297
並非只知如何使人自高;
knowing not so much how to exalt;
1:1298
因為它本性所趨,莫過於行事有節;
for indeed it is naturally disposed to nothing so much as acting with moderation;
1:1299
因為它總是這樣,不知不覺地、恆常不變地趨於自抑,反倒藉那本不存在之事物的過度彰顯,愈發顯露出其匱乏,使赤貧之狀彰明;
for indeed it is somehow ever accustomed unalterably to settle toward abatement, disclosing all the more, by the very excess of what is not truly present, the deficiency, and making known the destitution;
1:1300
並且藉著展示超乎個人價值之事,反使人對合乎價值之事萌生更嚴格的知覺,每當它掌握了靈魂的深處,便使人毫無遮掩地看見那不相稱之事的嚴重程度;
and by the display of what is beyond one's worth, instilling a stricter sense of what accords with worth, whenever, having taken hold of the depth of the soul, it makes one see, without concealment, the magnitude of the incongruity;
1:1301
我尤其經歷了這一切,藉著你們祈禱的清晰彰顯,我便持守了那些神聖的規制——那超乎理解的權宜之理,已眷顧地決意將其保存並頒示給像我這般需要引導、渴求扶持的人;
having especially experienced this, through the clear manifestation of your prayers, I took hold of the divine ordinances, which the principle of the economy beyond comprehension has seen fit providentially to preserve and set forth for those, like me, who are in need and want of guidance;
1:1302
誠然,就現任至聖教宗之通諭書信而言,在你們所述及的諸條款中,那眾城之后提出了異議;
Indeed, then, of the synodical letters of the present most holy Pope, in as many articles as you have written of, those of the queen of cities took issue;
1:1303
然而僅就其中兩條而言:其一屬乎神學,即據稱他曾言:聖靈也由子而出;
yet with only two: the one concerns theology, namely, that he is said to have stated that the Holy Spirit proceeds also from the Son;
1:1304
另一則關乎神聖的成肉身;
and the other, concerning the divine incarnation;
1:1305
至於第一條,他們援引了羅馬諸教父彼此相合的言論為證;
And as for the first, they adduced concordant citations of the Roman Fathers;
1:1306
此外,還援引了亞歷山大的區利羅,出自他為聖史約翰所作、殫精竭慮完成的那部聖著;
and further, also of Cyril of Alexandria, from the sacred work he labored over on the holy Evangelist John;
1:1307
由此他們證明了自己並未使子成為靈的原因;
from which they demonstrated themselves not to make the Son the cause of the Spirit;
1:1308
因為他們深知,父乃子與靈唯一共同的原因;
for they know the Father to be the one cause of both the Son and the Spirit;
1:1309
就子而言,是依生育;
of the one, according to generation;
1:1310
就靈而言,則是依發出;
and of the other, according to procession;
1:1311
他們如此說,乃是為要顯明聖靈是藉子而發出的;
but they said this in order to show that the Spirit proceeds forth through him, the Son;
1:1312
並藉此顯明本質之間的連結與不變的同一性;
and thereby to demonstrate the conjunction and unchangeable identity of the essence;
1:1313
至於第二條,他們根本毋須任何辯解;
As for the second point, they have no need at all of any defense;
1:1314
For what dispute is there in this?
1:1315
縱使那些因乖僻性情而尋藉口的人視此為爭議;
even if it is so reckoned by those who make excuses on account of their perverse disposition;
1:1316
然而,他們仍如此表明以釋眾疑,說基督既無那存於心思之罪——按此罪,亞當似乎是首先受其影響的——也無由此經身體而生的作惡之行為與運作;
Nevertheless, they gave satisfaction to their opponents, saying that Christ has neither the sin according to the mind — in respect of which Adam appears somehow to have been the first to be affected — nor the practice and operation of evil proceeding from it through the body;
1:1317
以上這些人所論及的,乃是他們本不應被合理究責之事;
These men, then, spoke these things, concerning matters for which they were not reasonably called to account;
1:1318
至於另一些人,就他們理當被究責之事——直到如今,他們卻毫無辯解,因為他們甚至連自己所引入之謬論,都未曾加以摒棄;
but those others, concerning matters for which they were quite justly called to account, have to this very day made no defense whatsoever, since they have not even rejected the things introduced by themselves;
1:1319
然而,遵照你們的吩咐,我已勸請羅馬人重新翻譯他們自己的文書,好使其得以避免那些理應受責之人所行的偷換曲解;
But I exhorted the Romans to render their own documents anew in translation, for the sake of escaping the surreptitious distortions of those who lie open to censure, in accordance with your command;
1:1320
然而,既然此種行事與傳送文書的方式,已成為慣例,我不知他們是否會被說服改弦更張;
yet, since custom has prevailed to act and to send documents in this manner, I do not know whether, perhaps, they would be persuaded to do otherwise;
1:1321
此外還有一事:他們無法將自己的思想,以另一種措辭與語言,如在其本國、養育他們的語言中那般精確地表達出來——正如我們也無法將我們的思想,以另一種語言,同樣精確地表達一般;
and besides, there is also the fact that they cannot render their own thought as precisely in another wording and tongue as in their own, which nurtured them — just as, indeed, we too cannot render ours as precisely in a tongue other than our own;
1:1322
但一旦他們親身經歷了由此招致的損害,他們自然也會對此事萌生關切;
But there will certainly come to them also concern about this, once they have learned by experience the harm it causes;
1:1323
至於論本質與本性、以及位格與人位的論述,連同其後諸章節,我曾讀到法蘭的狄奧多若所作的一篇短論;
As for the treatise concerning essence and nature, and hypostasis and person, and the following chapters, I came upon a short treatise of Theodore of Pharan;
1:1324
而這些章節,或許作為導論性質的著作,倒也並非全無助益;
and, as being perhaps in the manner of an introduction, they are not without usefulness;
1:1325
然而在論人位與位格的論述中,他似乎在某種程度上,與其說是遵循關乎此事的準則,不如說是遵循己意,竟稱運作為「位格性的」;
but in the discourse concerning person and hypostasis, he appears to have followed, somehow, not so much the rules concerning these matters as himself, calling the operation "hypostatic";
1:1326
而持相反意見者,正是將此人推舉為其己見的領袖與辯護者;
and him do the proponents of the contrary opinion put forward as the leader and advocate of their own view;
1:1327
他們幾乎全然依據此人及其言辭,擬定並口授了那部《信經闡釋》;
having formulated and dictated almost their entire Ekthesis from him and from his very words;
1:1328
誠然,就此而言,他在某種程度上使教義變得晦暗不明,因為他將那本應標誌本性的運作,賦予了人位——彷彿賦予人位所有一般;
For indeed, in these respects, he somehow obscured and darkened the doctrine, by attributing to the person, as to a person, the operation that characterizes the nature;
1:1329
而非僅將依乎人位而生之結果的方式與性質歸於人位;
not the manner and character of its outcome according to it, the person;
1:1330
according to which the difference between both those who act and the things done is recognized — whether they are in accordance with nature, or contrary to nature.
1:1331
For it is as being something, in the primary sense, that each of us acts — not as being someone.
1:1332
But it is as someone — as Paul, say, or Peter — that one shapes the mode of the operation, perhaps by remission or by intensification, being formed this way or that by himself according to his gnome.
1:1333
由此,在樣式之中,可辨識出諸人在行動上的差異;
Hence, in the mode, the variation among persons in respect of the action is recognized;
1:1334
but in the principle, the invariable identity of the natural operation [is recognized].
1:1335
因為並非有人更具運作能力或更具理性,有人則較少;
For it is not that one is more, another less, operative or rational;
1:1336
but we all equally possess reason, and its operation according to nature.
1:1337
But there is a more and a less:
1:1338
而人如此或如彼地成為義人或不義之人,乃因一人比另一人更多順從那依乎本性之事;
and one is just or unjust in this way or that, in that one man conforms to what accords with nature more than another does;
1:1339
One must observe with precision those who have been led astray in some respect,
1:1340
seemingly transferring [texts] as if by an injunction, so that they may thereby, through this distortion, establish what is properly their own.
1:1341
As for the quires that were sent — though I have not gone through them at leisure; I mean those concerning the soul and the remaining chapters — I make known my judgment concerning them.
1:1342
因為那出發者的匆忙,使我無法詳閱這些〔抄本〕;
For the haste of him who was setting out did not allow me to go through these;
1:1343
since even after many days of arriving in Byzacium, it reached my insignificant self in Carthage.
1:1344
此外,我也因〔可以說〕纏擾著我的眼睛之衰弱而受阻;
Moreover, I was also hindered by the weakness of my eyes, so to speak, which besets me;
1:1345
since I wished to fulfill your command concerning these matters as quickly as possible, I have sent [this].
1:1346
The arrangement decided upon for the transcription of the volume — containing the interpretation of the Evangelist John — has, for your most holy selves, appeared very fitting also to me, one of our company, so that it may not become an occasion for assault against him who set it forth, on the part of those who wrongly attempt to alter everything according to their own opinion.
1:1347
For these are the ends of the inhabited world; and those who confess the Lord sincerely and orthodoxly everywhere on earth look straight, as toward the sun of eternal light, to the most holy Church of the Romans and to her confession and faith, receiving from her the flashing splendor of the patristic and holy dogmas, just as the God-seized and divinely-inspired holy six synods sincerely and most piously set forth, declaring most manifestly the symbol of the faith.
1:1348
因為自那成了肉身的神——道向我們降臨之始,普天下眾基督徒的教會便已將那座在彼處至大的〔教會〕,取為並持守為唯一的基石與根基;
For from the very beginning of the descent to us of God the Word incarnate, all the churches of the Christians everywhere have acquired, and possess, as their sole base and foundation, that greatest Church there;
1:1349
因為按照救主那同一應許,她絕不會被陰間的門所勝過;
since, according to that same promise of the Savior, it is in no way overcome by the gates of Hades;
1:1350
反倒持有那對於祂的正統信仰與宣認之鑰匙;
but possesses the keys of the orthodox faith and confession in him;
1:1351
並向那些虔誠前來的人,敞開那真實地、依本性而言乃是唯一的虔敬;
and opens, to those who approach piously, the piety that truly and by nature is the only one;
1:1352
while shutting and stopping up every heretical mouth that speaks injustice on high —
1:1353
[mouths that] are eager to destroy and to nullify the great, all-luminous, and all-hymned mystery of the Christians' orthodox religion.
1:1354
阿里烏承認三個位格;
Arius confesses the three hypostases;
1:1355
卻否認太一;
but denies the Monad;
1:1356
and does not say the Holy Trinity is consubstantial.
1:1357
而撒伯流則承認太一;
But Sabellius confesses the Monad;
1:1358
卻否認三一;
but denies the Trinity;
1:1359
for he says that the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are the same one.
1:1360
But the Church of God both confesses the Monad and proclaims the Trinity.
1:1361
馬其頓紐則主張與阿里烏相似之說;
Macedonius holds views similar to Arius;
1:1362
因為他認定聖靈為受造物;
for he supposes the Holy Spirit to be a creature;
1:1363
but the Church proclaims the Holy Spirit to be consubstantial with the Father and the Son, and firmly affirms Him to be God in every respect.
1:1364
聶斯脫里主張本性上的差異;
Nestorius asserts the natural difference;
1:1365
but does not confess the union, for he does not say that it came to be according to hypostasis.
1:1366
而歐迪奇則承認聯合;
But Eutyches confesses the union;
1:1367
but denies the difference according to essence, and introduces a confusion of the natures.
1:1368
But the Church holds both the union according to hypostasis, on account of the indivisibility, and the difference according to essence, on account of the unconfusedness.
1:1369
How does the utmost union possess both identity and otherness?
1:1370
Either identity of essences and otherness of persons, or the reverse.
1:1371
譬如就聖三一而言,乃有本質的同一;
For instance, in the case of the Holy Trinity, there is identity of essence;
1:1372
因為我們承認一個本質;
for we confess one essence;
1:1373
而就人而言,則有位格的同一;
But in the case of man, there is identity of person;
1:1374
for, there being one man, the soul is of one essence, and the flesh of another.
1:1375
乃有位格的同一;
There is identity of person;
1:1376
for, there being one person — that is, one hypostasis — the divinity is of one essence, and the humanity of another.
1:1377
因為正如在聖三一之事上,不可能只承認聯合,卻不宣告差異;
For just as it is impossible, in the case of the Holy Trinity, to confess the union while not declaring the difference;
1:1378
so it is altogether necessary, in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity, to proclaim both the union and the difference.
1:1379
因為正如在聖三一之事上,差異與聯合並非以相同的詞語表明;
For just as the difference and the union are not signified by the same words in the case of the Holy Trinity;
1:1380
而差異乃藉「三個位格」一語表明;
but the difference is signified by saying 'three hypostases';
1:1381
而藉承認「一個本質」,聯合便得以承認;
while by confessing 'one essence' the union is confessed;
1:1382
同樣,論及聖三一中的那一位,也是如此;
so also in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity;
1:1383
藉著承認兩個本性,差異便得以表明;
by acknowledging the two natures, the difference is signified;
1:1384
while by proclaiming one composite hypostasis, the union is confessed.
1:1385
因為正如我們將阿里烏處以絕罰,並非因他在聖三一之事上宣揚按位格的差異;
For just as we anathematize Arius, not as one who proclaims the difference according to hypostasis in the case of the Holy Trinity;
1:1386
而是因他不承認本性上的聯合;
but as one who does not affirm the natural union;
1:1387
同樣,我們也將聶斯脫里處以絕罰,並非因他承認基督裡本性上的差異;
so also we anathematize Nestorius, not as one who acknowledges the natural difference in Christ;
1:1388
but as one who does not affirm the union according to hypostasis.
1:1389
正如我們將撒伯流處以絕罰,並非因他在聖三一之事上宣揚本性上的聯合;
Just as we anathematize Sabellius, not as one who proclaims the natural union in the case of the Holy Trinity;
1:1390
而是因他不承認按位格的差異;
but as one who does not affirm the difference according to hypostasis;
1:1391
同樣,我們將歐迪奇處以絕罰,並非因他不承認基督裡按位格的聯合;
so we anathematize Eutyches, not as one who fails to affirm the union according to hypostasis in Christ;
1:1392
but as one who does not acknowledge the natural difference.
1:1393
The difference according to hypostasis in the case of the Holy Trinity, and the natural difference in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity, must not be spoken of in terms of sense-perception, but must be understood with the eyes of the mind.
1:1394
And how is it that, in the case of the Holy Trinity, you declare the three hypostases on account of the difference according to hypostasis,
1:1395
while, in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity, you do not declare two natures in one hypostasis, on account of the natural difference?
1:1396
正如因聖三一的同本質之故,〔你說〕一個本質;
Just as, on account of the consubstantiality of the Holy Trinity, [you say] one essence;
1:1397
又因其位格各異之故,你說三個位格;
and on account of its being distinct in hypostases, you say three hypostases;
1:1398
同樣,因道與肉身本質相異之故,當說兩個本質;
so, on account of the difference of essence between the Word and the flesh, say two essences;
1:1399
and on account of its not having its own hypostasis, say one hypostasis.
1:1400
正如就聖三一而言,我們說「一個本質」,並非為使三個位格相混淆;
Just as, in the case of the Holy Trinity, we do not say 'one essence' with a view to the confusion of the three hypostases;
1:1401
我們也不是為要取消那唯一的本質,才論及三個位格;
Nor do we speak of the three hypostases unto the destruction of the one essence;
1:1402
同樣,論及聖三之一時,我們論及那唯一的位格,並非為要混淆祂的兩個本性;
so also, in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity, we speak of the one hypostasis, not unto the confusion of his two natures;
1:1403
nor do we speak of the two natures unto the division of the one hypostasis.
1:1404
凡因本性之差異,而不承認基督裡按位格之聯合者,即為聶斯多留派;
He who, on account of the difference of natures, does not affirm the union according to hypostasis in the case of Christ, is a Nestorian;
1:1405
凡在按位格之聯合中,不承認本性之差異者,即為歐迪奇派;
and he who does not affirm, in the union according to hypostasis, the natural difference, is a Eutychianist;
1:1406
but he who proclaims both the union according to hypostasis and the natural difference in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity holds the royal and blameless faith.
1:1407
He, therefore, who affirms both difference and union in the case of Christ, neither destroys the difference nor confuses the union.
1:1408
那些因差異而取消按位格之聯合者;
those who, on account of the difference, destroy the union according to hypostasis;
1:1409
and the ecumenical council anathematizes those who, on account of the union according to hypostasis, destroy the natural difference in the case of the One of the Holy Trinity.
1:1410
本質與本性,是同一的;
Essence and nature are identical;
1:1411
for both are common and universal, as being predicated of many things differing in number, and are never in any way circumscribed to one person.
1:1412
'Enhypostatic' is that which is common according to essence, that is, the species, subsisting really in the individuals under it, and not contemplated by bare conception alone.
1:1413
Or otherwise again, 'enhypostatic' is that which, together with another differing in essence, is composed and co-subsists for the constitution of one person and the generation of one hypostasis, and is in no way known by itself.
1:1414
「同本質者」是指與另一物本質相同,但在位格上與之互異者;
'Consubstantial' is that which happens to be of the same essence as another, but is different from it in hypostasis;
1:1415
as is the case with man and the other species.
1:1416
所以,若某物按本質與另一物相同,則其按位格必不與該物相同;
If, then, something is identical with another according to essence, it is not identical with the same also according to hypostasis;
1:1417
又若某物按本質與另一物合一並聯合,則其按位格必不與該物合一或聯合;
and if something happens to be one and united with the same according to essence, it does not happen to be one or united with the same also according to hypostasis;
1:1418
and if something has difference from another according to hypostasis, this has union with the same according to essence.
1:1419
'Essential union,' then, is that which brings together the hypostases, differing and many in number, into one and the same essence.
1:1420
'Essential difference,' moreover, is the principle according to which the essence, that is, the nature, remains undiminished and unchanged, unmixed and unconfused, and, though effecting its concurrence with another differing in species into one hypostasis, does not depart at all from its own proper nature.
1:1421
位格與人格,是同一的;
Hypostasis and person are identical;
1:1422
for both by nature possess particularity and propriety, having circumscription in themselves, but not predication in many.
1:1423
'Enousion' (essenced) is that which is not only contemplated as having in itself the aggregate of properties by which one thing is distinguished from another, but also really possesses the common element of essence.
1:1424
「同位格者」是指與另一物合構成同一位格者;
'Cohypostatic' is that which is composed together with another into one and the same hypostasis;
1:1425
但按本質與該物有別;
but happens to be different from the same in essence;
1:1426
as is the case with soul and body, and the other things which, differing in otherness of nature, are united according to hypostasis.
1:1427
If, then, something composed with another by union is identical according to hypostasis — that is, one hypostasis has come to be with it — it is different from the same according to essence.
1:1428
And if something happens to be one and united with another according to hypostasis, this is not one, nor of the same kind with the same, also according to essence.
1:1429
And if something composed with another has difference according to essence, this has union with the same according to hypostasis.
1:1430
'Hypostatic union,' then, is that which brings together and binds the different essences, that is, natures, into one person and one and the same hypostasis.
1:1431
'Hypostatic difference,' however, is the principle according to which the otherness — constituted by the aggregate of properties contemplated in each — in relation to the common element of essence, dividing one from another in number, produces the multitude of individuals.
1:1432
'Relational union' is that which brings together the different inclinations into one will.
1:1433
'Relational union' is a friendly common disposition, or a like-minded concurrence and assent of wills.
1:1434
'Relational difference' is otherness of inclination, or dissimilarity of wills, or division of disposition.
1:1435
「混淆性的聯合」是指由諸位格匯合而構成某一整體,此構成在聯合之後,其各部分並不保存其在形相與樣式上的完整存在;
'Confusive union' is a composition, coming about by concurrence out of hypostases into some whole, which does not have the entire existence of its own parts preserved in species and form after the union;
1:1436
but rather that existence obliterated, confounded, and unknown together, and possesses no difference whatsoever of the things that have concurred in it, signifying the essential propriety of these.
1:1437
It is the property of hypostasis to be seen by itself, and to be distinguished in number from things of the same species.
1:1438
「具位格者」的特性,或在於與另一在本質上互異之物,藉不可解之聯合,在一個位格中一同被認知;
It is the property of the enhypostatic either to be known, together with another differing in essence, in a hypostasis by an indissoluble union;
1:1439
or to happen naturally to exist, according to existence, in individuals.
1:1440
It is the property of essence to be naturally predicated of, and manifested in, all and of all.
1:1441
It is the property of the 'enousion' (essenced) to subsist really, and to bear in itself the true characteristics of all the personal properties.
1:1442
Or again, operation is the effect of a natural power.
1:1443
Natural will is the essential appetite for the things constitutive according to nature.
1:1444
Gnomic will is the self-determined impulse and movement of reasoning toward either alternative.
1:1445
'Identity' is invariability, according to which the principle of the thing signified possesses what is altogether singular, being known by no manner of difference.
1:1446
一篇屬靈且教義性的論著,證明:因君士坦丁堡牧首塞爾吉烏斯之慫恿,皇帝希拉克略所創新頒佈、引入之《信經公告》,實與神聖之聖言及諸教父不合;
A spiritual and dogmatic tome, demonstrating that the innovatively introduced Ekthesis of the Emperor Heraclius — issued at the instigation of Sergius, president of Constantinople — is discordant with the sacred Oracles and the Fathers;
1:1447
but concordant with the unholy heretics, who monstrously proclaim both confusion and division together concerning the mystery of Christ our God.
1:1448
The Lord, having likened the present life to night, its motion to a mill, and rest to a bed, determined that, of those in each — I mean the mill and the bed — the one is taken and the other is left.
1:1449
而那被取去的人,或許就是那藉默觀而脫離前者、藉實踐而脫離後者的人;
And the one who is taken, perhaps, is the one who has been released from the former through contemplation, and from the latter through practice;
1:1450
並且他在傾向上,既不滯留於那可見之物的運動所顯現之空間界限中,也不滯留於諸情慾之鬆懈中——安息即在其中;
and who has remained, in disposition, neither in the circumscription of the intervals in which the motion of visible things is seen, nor in the enervation of the passions, in which is rest;
1:1451
but the one left behind is the one who has voluntarily become fixed in these, on account of the soul's love of pleasure and love of restless vanity.
1:1452
論及那些貧窮困乏的人,他們因神的恩典從地上被如此高舉、被如此提升,以致將其生命提升至理性,將其心思提升至那管轄今世之事、且超乎今世之事的主;
of the poor and needy, who have been so raised up from the earth by the grace of God, and so exalted, as to lift their life to reason, and their mind to the Lord of the things here below, and beyond the things here below;
1:1453
使肖像與原型相親近並合一;
assimilating and uniting the image to the archetype;
1:1454
又或者,說得更確切些,是願意使你們那至高之美的自願卑抑,成為高處之明證,好叫你們也能以其豐盛引領我們達到神—道的尺度;祂正是藉著向我們自我倒空,顯明其自身榮耀那無可界定的高度;
or rather, to speak more truly, wishing to make the voluntary lowering of your most supreme beauty a demonstration of loftiness, so that by its abundance you might also lead us to the measure of God the Word, who, by his kenosis toward us, displays the uncircumscribed height of his own glory;
1:1455
為要更加渴切地重塑我們,其程度正如祂自己在肉身中、為我們的緣故,將自己塑造得更為卑微一般;
in order to refashion us the more longingly, in the very degree that he himself, in the flesh, for our sake, fashioned himself toward what is lowlier;
1:1456
祂,那格外愛世人者,按本性成為人,卻無變易、無混淆;
having, by nature, become man without change and without confusion, he who is exceedingly loving of mankind;
1:1457
在承受我們之所有上毫無闕漏,免得因未將全部賜予本性——如同並未領受全部本性一般——以致既虧缺了自己的恩典,也虧缺了我們的救恩;
leaving out nothing in the assumption of what is ours, lest, by not giving the whole to nature — as one who had not received the whole nature — he should fail to give grace to himself and salvation to us;
1:1458
but rather diminished that nature in the very respect in which he did not assume this nature.
1:1459
For 'that which is not assumed is unhealed,' says the great Gregory.
1:1460
For how shall the supra-essential God the Word, incarnate for our sake from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Ever-Virgin Mother of God, by the assumption of flesh possessing a soul both noetic and rational — thereby styled new by nature and having become man — renew the one grown old, if he did not assume him wholly and entirely, apart only from sin, from which comes the growing old;
1:1461
and on account of which death was condemned upon nature — death having us as nourishment to the same degree that we have tasted of it, having been bitterly gorged on the tree of transgression.
1:1462
And how shall the same one, having emptied himself, raise up the one who has fallen, if he has not united him wholly and entirely to himself according to hypostasis from the very moment of conception, apart only from the slip itself, from which comes the shattering, and on account of which comes the penalty?
1:1463
In this way, then, having assumed a noetic and rational soul together with the body naturally conjoined to it — that is, having assumed a perfect man without any blemish — and having united him to himself according to hypostasis, he himself, God who is above nature, having also taken its natural will, certainly possessed a self-determined act of willing.
1:1464
倘若我們在違背誡命時,並非在無意願之下違背——實在是絲毫不缺意志——那麼我們便需要與此相應的醫治;
If, in transgressing the commandment, we transgressed not without an act of willing — indeed, not without will at all — we stood in need of the healing that corresponds to it;
1:1465
那成肉身的神親自以同類醫治同類,藉承受那同類者;
the incarnate God himself healing like by like, through the assumption of the like;
1:1466
並且也承受了其理性且賦予生命的運作,祂便具有此運作;
and having assumed also its rational and vital operation, he possessed it;
1:1467
by which operation, having conceived and enacted sin — would that we never had! — we stood in need of the salvation that corresponds to it; he cleansing it of all defilement by his assumption, and deifying our whole nature by the incarnation.
1:1468
因為,若那身為神的道,本質性地創造了此本性,使其具有這兩者——我是指意志與運作——並使其一為自主者,另一為運作者,那麼顯然,祂便是照此方式承受本性,按位格將其聯合於自己,正如祂起初創造此本性時一般,亦即本性上具有意志能力與運作能力;
For if the Word, being God, created this nature essentially possessing these — I mean the will and the operation — and established the one as self-determined, the other as operative, it is clear that, having assumed the nature in this way, he united it to himself according to hypostasis just as he had created it from the beginning, that is, as by nature volitive and operative;
1:1469
lest, by assuming the nature only as passible without also assuming its innate powers, he should not have assumed the nature at all, but should have made the economy a mere appearance.
1:1470
For it is impossible for our nature, or that of any other beings, ever to exist or be named a nature, apart from its innate powers, by which everything is by nature essentially characterized.
1:1471
Hence our nature is not without will, since not even that of man is.
1:1472
Nor indeed is it without operation, since it is not even without soul.
1:1473
But if that which is according to us were without will and without operation, as has seemed to some heretics both of old and now, then he who is above us would not have come to be according to us at all — not confirming what is ours by what is ours, nor by those [properties] with which he himself, having from the beginning created man, naturally characterized him, making him, according to nature, self-determined and operative.
1:1474
Yet the composition of the holy Gospels confirms incontrovertibly that he has assumed the capacity of both of these, in that it presents the supra-essential Logos, become man for our sake, as both willing and operating, proclaiming in one place:
1:1475
'In the watch of the night he comes to them, walking upon the sea, and he wished to pass by them;'
1:1476
'And rising from there [and going] to the region of Tyre and Sidon, and entering into a house, he wished no one to know it, yet he could not escape notice;'
1:1477
'Going out from there, they passed through Galilee, and he did not wish that anyone should know it;'
1:1478
'On the next day he wished to go into Galilee.'
1:1479
'Jesus walked in Galilee, for he did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him;'
1:1480
'Where do you wish that we prepare for you to eat the Passover?'
1:1481
'They gave him vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted it he was not willing to drink it.'
1:1482
For these things — I mean, 'he wished to pass by them,' and 'he wished to go out,' and 'he did not wish to walk,' and 'to wish to eat the Passover,' and 'not to wish to drink the vinegar' — confirm his human act of willing and operation, that which is according to us.
1:1483
Such as the willing and not willing to pass by, or to eat, or to walk, or to drink — this is plainly an act of willing, by which he was known to be, by nature, possessed of the faculty of will.
1:1484
But by tasting and eating, and going out, and journeying and walking from place to place — that is, by the operation — he was shown to be possessed, by nature, of the power to operate, according to that [nature] by which he later became man for our sake, but not according to that by which he existed, without beginning, in himself, by nature, God.
1:1485
因為道,就其是神、按本性是神之子而言,本性上並不會有形體地意願某事並進食,也不會因由此地至彼地的移動而受地方所限——他乃是無限地、無數次無限地無所不在、超越萬有;
Since it does not belong by nature to the Logos, insofar as he was God and by nature Son of God, to will something bodily and to eat, or to be circumscribed locally by movements from place to place, being everywhere and beyond the universe, infinitely, infinite times over;
1:1486
so likewise Scripture, presenting him as possessing, supra-essentially, the divine and paternal will and operation, teaches clearly:
1:1487
'As the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.'
1:1488
在此,願意使死人得生命這一點,見證了他那神聖的意願;
Here too, then, the wishing to give life to the dead attests his divine act of willing;
1:1489
while the actual giving of life [attests] properly his all-effecting operation.
1:1490
And simply, if there is anything else of this kind, it belongs to [his] nature that is set apart from [all other] beings, for the manifestation, so far as possible, of this [nature].
1:1491
然而,道藉著這些話語,透過他自己的門徒,按他所由以構成、且在其中而存有的兩個本性,將自己呈現為:按本性既有意志又能運作,為要成就我們的救恩;
But through these [words], the Logos himself, through his own disciples, presents himself, according to both his natures — out of which and in which he consists — as being by nature both volitional and operative, for our salvation;
1:1492
while those who succeeded them thereafter, and the expositors of the theophany of the Logos in the flesh, the Fathers of the catholic Church approved by God, [proclaimed] likewise both natures of the same [Christ] — the divine and the human —
1:1493
and not only [the natures], but also proclaiming the will and the operation, they declare the following in a loud voice:
1:1494
For he who is named for immortality [Athanasius], in his treatise On the Incarnation and the Trinity, [says]:
1:1495
'And when he says, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" —'
1:1496
'"The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" — he shows here two wills;'
1:1497
'the human [will], on account of the weakness of the flesh, declines the suffering, while his divine [will] is ready.'
1:1498
But Gregory, named for theology, in his second oration On the Son:
1:1499
'Let it be said, seventh, that the Son has come down from heaven, not that he might do his own will, but [the will] of him who sent him' —
1:1500
'Now if these things were not said concerning him who had come down, we would say that the statement is framed with reference to man [in general], not to the man conceived of in respect to the Savior.'
1:1501
'For that one's will — even when wholly deified — is in no way opposed to God; but [I mean] that which is according to us,'
1:1502
'inasmuch as the human will does not always follow the divine, but for the most part resists and struggles against it.'
1:1503
'The leper approaches, already wasting away and rendered useless in body,'
1:1504
'How does the healing come about for this man from the Lord?'
1:1505
'The soul wills, the body touches; through both the affliction flees.'
1:1506
'for,' as it is said, 'immediately the leprosy [departed] from him.'
1:1507
And again the same [Gregory], in the same oration:
1:1508
'Again, those who in many thousands were attending upon him in the desert, he was not willing to send away fasting;'
1:1509
'but with his hands he breaks the loaves.'
1:1510
'Do you see how the Godhead, accompanying [him] through both, is made manifest — both by the operating body, and by the impulse of the will arising in the soul?' And in his second oration, composed against the impious Eunomius:
1:1511
'How did the Lord, in reconciling the world to himself, distribute between soul and body the benefaction that came from him to mankind — willing by means of the soul, but touching by means of the body?' And again the same [Gregory] says, in [his work] against Apollinarius:
