Καὶ ἐχάλασαν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν λάκκον . Γίνεται τύπος ὁ προφήτης τοῦ κατὰ Χριστὸν μυστηρίου , τοῦ δεδομένου μὲν εἰς χεῖρας Ἰουδαίων ὑπὸ Πιλάτου , κατελθόντος δὲ πρὸς τὸν δυσώνυμον καὶ ἀηδέστατον ᾄδην , καὶ ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν ἀναστάντος·
「他們用繩子把他縋下坑中。」先知在此成為關乎基督之奧秘的預表——基督被彼拉多交在猶太人手中,下到那名聲不祥、最為可憎的陰間,又從死人中復活:
'And they let him down into the pit.' The prophet becomes a type of the mystery concerning Christ, who was delivered into the hands of the Jews by Pilate, and descended to ill-named and most loathsome Hades, and rose from the dead:

ὥσπερ ἀμέλει καὶ ὁ προφήτης ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου πάλιν ἀνέβη·
正如先知也確實從坑中再次上來一樣:
just as, indeed, the prophet also came up again out of the pit:

λάκκον δὲ ἡ Γραφὴ πολλαχοῦ τὸν ᾅδην καλεῖ

Ἐπονηρεύσω ἃ ἐποίησας . Ἀβδεμελὲχ ὁ Αἰθίοψ βουλόμενος σῶσαι τὸν Ἱερεμίαν μέμφεται τῷ βασιλεῖ λέγων·
「你所行的是惡事。」古實人以伯米勒想要拯救耶利米,便責備王說:
'You have done evil, the things which you did.' Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, wishing to save Jeremiah, rebukes the king, saying:

Οὐ καλῶς ἐβουλεύσω ἀποκτεῖναι τὸν ἄνδρα ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ
「你決意在坑中殺害這人,實在不妥。」
'You have not counseled well, to kill the man in the pit.'

Ἔδει γὰρ αὐτὸν , τὸν οἴκτιστον σὺν ἡμῖν ὑπομεῖναι θάνατον τὸν διὰ τοῦ λιμοῦ
「因為他理當與我們一同,忍受那由饑荒而來的至可憐憫之死。」
'For he ought, together with us, to have endured that most pitiable death by famine.'

Ζῇ Κύριος . Σημεῖον καὶ ἐντεῦθεν , ὅτι κτιστὴ ἡ ψυχή
「主活著。」由此也可見一個記號:靈魂是受造的。
'As the Lord lives.' A sign also from this, that the soul is created.

Ἐγὼ λόγον ἔχω . Τῶν Ἰουδαίων τινὲς πρὸς τοὺς Χαλδαίους αὐτομολήσαντες , ὑπισχνοῦντο τῷ Σεδεκίᾳ , μὴ συγχωρήσειν τοὺς πολεμίους συλλαβεῖν αὐτόν·
「我有一件事[要說]。」有些猶太人已投奔迦勒底人,他們向西底家承諾,不會讓敵人捉拿他:
'I have a matter [to speak].' Some of the Jews, having deserted to the Chaldeans, promised Zedekiah that they would not allow the enemies to seize him:

καὶ ἐπείθετο μᾶλλον τούτοις , ἢ Θεῷ λέγοντι , δεῖν ἀκολουθῆσαι τῷ Βαβυλωνίῳ
而他寧可相信這些人,也不信神——神曾說必須順服巴比倫王
and he was persuaded by these rather than by God, who was saying that it was necessary to submit to the Babylonian

Ἔλεγε δὲ τοῦτο Θεὸς , βουλόμενος αὐτοὺς σωθῆναι·

And God said this, wishing them to be saved:

εἰ γὰρ ἔζησαν ἀκολουθήσαντες τῷ πολεμίῳ , γνόντες τὸν παραδόντα . Θεὸν , μετενόουν , καὶ τὰς αὑτῶν ἐκέρδαινον ψυχάς
因為他們若因跟從敵人而得以存活,認出是神把他們交出去的,就會悔改,並救回自己的靈魂。
For if they had lived by following the enemy, recognizing that it was God who had handed them over, they would have repented and gained their own souls.

Ἄνδρες εἰρηνικοί σου . Ἀντὶ τοῦ , οἱ φίλοι σου
『你的和平之人。』意即:你的朋友。
'Your peaceable men.' That is, instead of [saying] your friends.

Καὶ δυνήσονταί σοι . Τουτέστιν , Ἴσχυσαν παρατρέψαι σε τῆς εὐθείας ὁδοῦ·
『他們必能勝過你。』意即:他們有力量使你偏離正路。
'And they will prevail against you.' That is: they had the power to turn you aside from the straight way.

Καὶ ἐν τῷ δεκάτῳ ἔτει τοῦ Σεδεκία . Πολιορκήσαντες ἐπὶ χρόνον οἱ Βαβυλώνιοι τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἷλον , καὶ ἐξαγαγόντες ἐκ τῆς φυλακῆς τὸν Ἱερεμίαν παραδεδώκασι τῷ Γοδολίᾳ , καὶ ἐκάθισαν αὐτὸν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λαοῦ
『在西底家第十年。』巴比倫人圍困耶路撒冷一段時間後攻取了它,並把耶利米從監獄裡帶出來,交給基大利,讓他安置在百姓中間。
'And in the tenth year of Zedekiah.' The Babylonians, having besieged Jerusalem for a time, took it, and having brought Jeremiah out of the prison, handed him over to Gedaliah, and set him in the midst of the people.

Καὶ ἐξήγαγον . Ἴσως ἀκούσαντες παρὰ τῶν αὐτομολησάντων οἱ Χαλδαῖοι , ὅτι προὔλεγε τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις μὴ ἀντιστῆναι αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἱερεμίας , ἐτίμησαν αὐτόν
『他們就把他帶出來。』或許迦勒底人從投降者那裡聽說,耶利米曾預先勸猶太人不要抵抗他們,因此尊重他。
'And they brought [him] out.' Perhaps the Chaldeans, having heard from those who had deserted to them that Jeremiah had been telling the Jews beforehand not to resist them, honored him.

Καὶ πρὸς Ἱερεμίαν . Εἰπὼν τῆς πόλεως τὴν ἅλωσιν , ἐπειδὴ ἀναγκαῖον ἦν μνημονεῦσαι , ὡς ἐτίμησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν Ἀβδεμέλεχ , καὶ ὑπέσχετο αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ προφήτου μὴ παραδώσειν αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖρας ἐχθρῶν , ἐπειδὴ καὶ αὐτὸς τὸν προφήτην περιεποιήσατο , ἀνέδραμεν εἰς τὰ πρὸ τῆς ἁλώσεως
『論到耶利米。』既已述說了那城被攻陷之事,由於有必要提及神如何尊重阿伯德米勒,並藉先知應許他不會被交在敵人手中——因為他也曾保全先知——〔敘事〕便回溯到攻陷之前的事。
'And to Jeremiah.' Having told of the taking of the city, since it was necessary to mention how God honored Abdemelech, and promised him through the prophet that he would not be handed over into the hands of enemies—since he too had preserved the prophet—[the narrative] runs back to the events before the capture.

Πορεύου . Οὐκ ἀπὸ τόπου εἰς τόπον κελεύει ὁ Θεὸς μεταβῆναι τῷ προφήτῃ·
『你去。』神並非命令先知從一處遷往另一處;
'Go.' God does not command the prophet to move from one place to another;

Τὴν ἀποστολικὴν οὖν διακονίαν νόει
要理解為使徒的職事。
understand, then, apostolic ministry.

Ὅτι ἐπεποίθεις . Ἡ γὰρ εἰς τὸν προφήτην τιμὴ , εἰς τὸν Θεὸν ἔχει τὴν ἀναφορὰν , καὶ Θεῷ πιστεύων , τὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπον ἐτίμα
『因為你曾信靠。』因為向先知所表的尊重,是歸於神的;他既信靠神,就尊重了神的人。
'Because you had trusted.' For the honor [shown] to the prophet is referred to God; and [Abdemelech], trusting in God, honored the man of God.

Ναβουζαρδάν . Ἀρχιστράτηγος ἦν , οὗ ἐκτὸς οὐδεὶς ἀνῃρεῖτο·
尼布撒拉旦。他是元帥,若非經他,無人被處死;
Nebuzaradan. He was the commander-in-chief, apart from whom no one was put to death;

διὸ καὶ ἀρχιμάγειρος καλεῖται , ὡς ἐπὶ τῶν φόνων
因此他也被稱為『膳宰長』,意即那管理殺戮之事的人。
wherefore he is also called 'chief cook,' as one set over the killings.

Ἅπαντα τὰ ἀγαθά . Ἀντὶ τοῦ , ὃ ἡδύ σοί ἐστι , τοῦτο πρᾶξον
『一切美好的事物。』意即:凡你認為好的,就去行。
'All the good things.' That is: do whatever is pleasing to you.

Καὶ ἤκουσαν . Ἐγὼ , φησὶν , ἀποκωλύω αὐτοὺς , τοῦ ἐπηρεάσαι τινὰ ὑμῶν
『他們就聽從了。』他說:『我阻止他們,不許他們欺負你們中任何人。』
'And they obeyed.' 'I,' he says, 'restrain them from wronging any of you.'

Καὶ ὑμεῖς συνάγετε οἶνον . Ἀπολαύσατε τῶν τῆς εἰρήνης ἀγαθῶν , καὶ Θεῷ τῷ δοτῆρι τούτων προσκομίσατε τὰς ἀπαρχάς
『你們要收聚酒。』要享用平安的美物,並將初熟之物獻給賜下這些的神。
'And you, gather wine.' Enjoy the good things of peace, and offer the firstfruits to God, the giver of these things.

Ὀγδοήκοντα ἄνδρες , ἐξυρημένοι πώγωνας . Πενθοῦντες ἐπὶ τῇ καθαιρέσει τοῦ ναοῦ
『八十個人,剃了鬍鬚。』是為聖殿被拆毀而哀悼。
'Eighty men, with shaven beards.' Mourning over the destruction of the temple.

Ὅτι εἰσὶν ἡμῖν θησαυροὶ ἐν ἀγρῷ . Ἀντὶ τοῦ , Λάβε ὅσα ἔχομεν , καὶ μὴ ἀνέλῃς ἡμᾶς
『因為我們在田間有財寶。』意即:『取走我們所有的一切,只求不要殺我們。』
'For we have treasures in the field.' That is: 'Take whatever we have, and do not destroy us.'

Ὅτι ἀναπέπαυμαι ἐπὶ τοῖς κακοῖς . Ἀντὶ τοῦ , Ἐπληρώθη μου ἡ καθ' ὑμῶν ὀργή
『因為我已從這些禍患中安歇。』意即:『我向你們發的怒氣已經滿了。』
'For I have rested from the evils.' That is: 'My wrath against you has been fulfilled.'

Ὅτι εἰς γῆν Αἰγύπτου εἰσελευσόμεθα . Οἱ τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ προστρέχοντες , νομίζουσιν ἐκφεύγειν τοῦ βίου τὰ ἐπίπονα , οὐ θέλοντες ἀκούειν πολέμους
『因為我們要進入埃及地。』那些奔向罪的人,以為自己可以逃避人生的艱苦,不願聽聞戰爭。
'For we shall go into the land of Egypt.' Those who run after sin suppose that they are escaping the hardships of life, being unwilling to hear of wars.

Ἀγνοοῦσι δὲ τὴν ὕστερον αὐτοὺς καταληψομένην ὀργήν
但他們不知道,日後將有忿怒臨到他們。
But they are ignorant of the wrath that will overtake them afterward.

Καὶ ὁ λιμός . Οὗ πολὺν ποιεῖσθε λόγον δεδοικότες αὐτόν
『還有饑荒。』你們對此十分憂懼,多加議論。
'And the famine.' Which you make much of, fearing it.

Καθὼς ἔσταξεν . Ἀντὶ τοῦ , ἀφείθη
『如同滴下。』意即:已被釋放。
'As it dripped.' That is: it was let loose/released.

Μὴ εἰσέλθητε . Προβλέπων τὰ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ τῶν Ἰουδαίων τῷ προφητικῷ πνεύματι ὁ Ἱερεμίας , πρὶν ἐκείνους ἀποκρίνασθαι , φησὶ πρὸς αὐτοὺς , ὅτι Οὐκ ἀκούσεσθε τοῦ Θεοῦ
『你們不要進去。』耶利米憑著先知的靈,預先看見猶太人心裡所存的,在他們回答之前,就對他們說:『你們必不聽從神。』
'Do not go in.' Jeremiah, foreseeing by the prophetic spirit what was in the hearts of the Jews, before they answered, says to them: 'You will not listen to God.'

Ὅτι ἐπονηρεύσασθε ἐν ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν . Ἕτερα ἐν ταῖς διανοίαις ὑμῶν κεκρικότες , ἀπεστείλατέ με ἐρωτῆσαι Θεὸν πειράζοντες αὐτόν
『因為你們心中行了惡事。』你們心裡早已另有主意,卻差我去求問神,其實是試探祂。
'For you have dealt wickedly in your souls.' Having already resolved other things in your minds, you sent me to inquire of God, [merely] testing him.

Ἵνα δῷς ἡμᾶς εἰς χεῖρας τῶν Χαλδαίων . Ἴσως ὑπώπτευσαν τὸν Βαροὺχ , ὡς πρότερον πεμφθέντα ὑπὸ τοῦ βασιλέως τῶν Ἰουδαίων δῶρα κομίσαι τῷ Βαβυλωνίῳ , καὶ φίλον αὐτῷ γεγενημένον
『要把我們交在迦勒底人手中。』或許他們懷疑巴錄,因為他先前曾奉猶太王之命,攜帶禮物去見巴比倫王,並與他結為友人。
'That you may give us into the hands of the Chaldeans.' Perhaps they suspected Baruch, since he had previously been sent by the king of the Jews to bring gifts to the Babylonian, and had become his friend.

Προφασίζονται γὰρ τοῦτο εἰς τὸ παρακοῦσαι Θεοῦ
他們提出這個藉口,為要違背神。
For they allege this pretext in order to disobey God.

Τῇ γὰρ κακίᾳ οὐ λείπει πρόφασις
因為惡事從不缺乏藉口。
For wickedness never lacks a pretext.

Ἐν Τάφναις λέγων . Καὶ αὕτη βασιλικὴ πόλις τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ἐτύγχανεν
『說,在答比匿。』這也是埃及人的一座王城。
'Saying, in Tahpanhes.' This too happened to be a royal city of the Egyptians.

Οὓς εἰς θάνατον . Κατ' ἐξουσίαν , φησὶν , ὃ θέλει διαπράξεται
『那些被定為死的。』他說:『他必憑自己的權柄,行他所願的事。』
'Those [destined] for death.' 'By his authority,' he says, 'he will do whatever he wishes.'

Ὥσπερ φθειρίζει . Ἐν τοῖς τῶν δαιμόνων ἱεροῖς
『如同人拾除虱子一般。』是指在鬼魔的廟宇之中。
'As one delouses [his garment].' In the shrines of the demons.

Καὶ συντρίψει τοὺς στύλους Ἡλιουπόλεως . Ἔστιν Ἡλιούπολις , ἐν ᾗ περιφανὲς ἦν τὸ ἱερὸν , πάντων δαιμόνων καταγώγιον
『他必打碎赫利奧波利斯(意即「太陽城」)的柱子。』確有一座赫利奧波利斯,其中的廟宇聲名遠播,是眾鬼魔的巢穴。
'And he will break the pillars of Heliopolis.' There is a Heliopolis in which the temple was renowned, a haunt of all the demons.

Ἐφίστημι τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἐφ' ὑμᾶς εἰς κακά . Κατελθόντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ , πάλιν εἰδώλοις ἔθυον
『我向你們變臉,使你們遭災。』猶太人下到埃及之後,又向偶像獻祭。
'I set my face against you for evil.' The Jews, having gone down into Egypt, again sacrificed to idols.

Προλέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς πάλιν Θεὸς διὰ τοῦ προφήτου , ὅτι Ἀναμνήσατε ἑαυτοὺς τῶν ἐπενεχθέντων κακῶν τῇ Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ
於是神再次藉著先知預先告訴他們:『你們當回想那臨到耶路撒冷與猶大地的禍患。』
God therefore again foretells them through the prophet, saying: 'Remind yourselves of the evils that were brought upon Jerusalem and Judea.'

Καὶ ἵνα γένησθε εἰς κατάραν . Οἱ γὰρ ἐθνικοὶ ὀνειδίζοντές τισι , καταρώμενοι , ἔλεγον , Οὕτως γενέσθω σοι ὡς Ἰσραηλίταις
『使你們成為咒詛。』因為外邦人責罵、咒詛人時,會說:『願這事照樣臨到你,如同臨到以色列人一般。』
'And that you may become a curse.' For the pagans, when reproaching and cursing someone, would say: 'May it happen to you thus, as to the Israelites.'

Οὐ μὴ ἐπιστρέψωσι . Οἱ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι , καὶ οἱ σποράδην καθ' οἱουσδήποτε τόπους σωθέντες
『他們必不歸回。』無論是在巴比倫的人,或是四散在各處得救的人,都不得歸回。
'They shall by no means return.' Those in Babylon, and those who were saved scattered throughout whatever places.

Θυμιᾷν τῇ βασιλίσσῃ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ . Ταύτην δὲ ἴσως τὴν καλουμένην Ἀφροδίτην ὑπενόουν εἶναι , ἣν καὶ Σελήνην , καὶ Ἑκάτην ἐκάλουν οἱ βδελυροί
『向天后燒香。』他們或許以為這就是稱作阿芙羅狄忒的那位,這可憎的一群人也稱她為塞勒涅(月神)和赫卡忒。
'To burn incense to the queen of heaven.' This they perhaps supposed to be the one called Aphrodite, whom the abominable ones also called Selene and Hecate.

Καὶ ἐπλήσθημεν ἄρτων . Ἀπὸ γυναικῶν οἱ λόγοι·
『我們就飽足有餘糧。』這是婦女們所說的話;
'And we were filled with bread.' These are the words of the women;

οὐδὲ ἐν αὐτοῖς οὖσαι τοῖς κακοῖς , τῶν κακῶν ἐπαισθάνονται
她們雖身處禍患之中,卻感覺不到那禍患。
even while being amid the evils themselves, they do not perceive the evils.

Καὶ ἐγενόμεθα χρηστοί . Χρηστοὺς λέγει καὶ εὐτραφεῖς τινας , καὶ εὐθηνουμένους , καὶ ἱλαρούς
『我們就變得富足。』所謂『富足』,是指那些吃得飽足、興旺、心情愉快的人。
'And we became prosperous.' By 'prosperous' he means certain ones who are well-nourished, thriving, and cheerful.

Καὶ εἶπεν Ἱερεμίας . Συμφώνως φασὶν ἅπαντες·
『耶利米就說。』眾人異口同聲地說;
'And Jeremiah said.' They all speak with one accord;

Εἱλόμεθα τὸ θύειν εἰδώλοις
『我們已選擇向偶像獻祭。』
'We have chosen to sacrifice to idols.'
1:951⧉ ⤴︎
Ἐὰν γένηται ἔτι ὄνομά μου ἐν τῷ στόματι . Ἐνταῦθα φανερῶς πάντας εἰσάπαξ μετὰ τῶν ἐθνικῶν ἀπέῤῥιψεν
『若我的名還在人口中。』在此他明顯地一舉將他們眾人與外邦人一同棄絕。
'If my name shall still be in [anyone's] mouth.' Here he clearly rejected them all at once, together with the pagans.

Καὶ γνώσονται . Πένητες καὶ γέροντες , οὓς οὐκ ἀξιοῦσιν ἀνελεῖν οἱ πολέμιοι , ὑπολιμπάνονται δὲ ἵνα μηνυταὶ γένωνται τῶν συμφορῶν
『他們必知道。』那些窮乏人和老年人,敵人認為不值得殺害,便留下他們,好讓他們成為報告這些災禍的見證人。
'And they shall know.' The poor and the aged, whom the enemies do not think worth killing, are left behind so that they may become witnesses of the calamities.

Οἱ καταστάντες . Οἱ ἑλόμενοι οἰκῆσαι ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ
『那些定居的人。』指那些選擇住在埃及的人。
'Those who settled [there].' Those who chose to dwell in Egypt.

Οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος . Ὀλιγωροῦντι [πολυωροῦντι ] καὶ στένοντι τῷ Βαροὺχ , φησὶ διὰ τοῦ Ἱερε . μίου ὁ Θεὸς , ὅτι Περισώσω σου τὴν ψυχὴν ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ
『耶和華如此說。』神藉耶利米對灰心(異文作:過度憂慮)歎息的巴錄說:『我必在各處保全你的性命。』
'Thus said the Lord.' To Baruch, who was despondent (variant: greatly anxious) and groaning, God says through Jeremiah: 'I will preserve your life in every place.'

Μὴ ζήτει δὲ , ἄνθρωπος ὢν , ἀπαλλαγῆναι πόνων
但你既是人,就不要企求脫離勞苦。
But do not seek, since you are but a man, to be freed from toils.

Τοὺς νομομαθεῖς , φησὶν , εἰς πάντα σεμνὰ ἐχαρίσατο
他說:『通曉律法的人,蒙祂恩待,得以享有一切尊貴之事。』
'The men learned in the law,' he says, 'he graciously favored unto all things honorable.'

'What the Lord spoke.' God is said to speak 'by the hand' of the prophets, since the prophets did everything they heard [they were commanded] to do.

'And give notice to Memphis.' 'Prepare yourself for slaughter; take heed'—that is: you shall know that the sword of the Babylonian will cut off your king just as one cuts a bindweed shoot.

'From before the Greek sword.' The Greeks, being from Ionia, were of old tributary to the Babylonians, and fought as their allies in wars.

'From the Greek sword,' then, [stands] instead of [saying]: [the sword] of the Babylonian's allies.

'For as Tabor.' This, being a mountain of Galilee, was desolate before the coming of Christ.

'Because in the sand.' They crawl, lying on the ground, dragged along as captives.

'They shall cut down her forest.' [This signifies] her incomparable [host], her multitude surpassing that of the locust.

The Egyptians honored Ammon as Zeus; and so this idol of theirs too, he says, I will punish;

and this is what Satan suffered at the coming of Christ.

'And I will discipline you.' As to the literal sense: even after going up from Egypt to Jerusalem, they were disciplined again;

'How long, O sword of the Lord?' The prophet foresees God's vengeance at the end against the demons and all the unbelieving.

Ἀποκατάστηθι εἰς τὸν κολεόν σου . Εὔχεται λοιπὸν ἡσυχάσαι τῆν ὀργὴν , ἵνα εἰρηνεύσῃ ἡ κτίσις

'Return into your sheath.' He prays, then, that the wrath may be stilled, so that creation may be at peace.

He receives the assurance that the sword of the Lord will not rest until it has utterly destroyed the deceit, and death, the last enemy, is abolished;

'And the valley shall perish.' The valley is the land lying alongside the river.

'Give signs to Moab.' That is [to say]: give her advance warning.

'He who withholds his sword from blood.' Moabites and Ammonites are forbidden by the Law to enter the house of God.

For the sword of the Spirit ought always to slay evils.

πεποιθώς . Ὁ μὴ ἔχων πρόσωπον εἰς οἶκον Θεοῦ εἰσιέναι Μωαβίτης , πέποιθε τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου
「倚靠」:摩押人本無資格進入神的殿,卻倚靠這世代的榮耀。
'trusting.' The Moabite, who has no standing to enter the house of God, trusts in the glory of this age.

Μετὰ τὴν ἱστορίαν νόησον , ὅτι ἠμέλησεν τὰς νεωτερικὰς ὁρμὰς ἀνακόψαι
在史實之後,當理解:他疏於克制年少輕狂的衝動。
After the literal sense, understand that he neglected to check the impulses of youth.

Οὐκ ἐνέχεεν ἐξ ἀγγείου εἰς ἀγγεῖον . Πρὸς μὲν ἰστορίαν , Οὐδέποτε , φησὶν , ἀπῳκίσθη , οὐδὲ ἀπώλεσέ τι τῶν ἑαυτοῦ

'He has not been poured out from vessel to vessel.' As to the literal sense: 'Never,' he says, 'was he carried into exile, nor did he lose anything of his own.'

'Are we strong?' Because he boasted greatly against God, and makes war upon the Israelites — that is, us — who have done him no wrong.

'And upon the house.' He means their royal city.

'The horn of Moab is broken.' That is [to say]: both his glory and his strength [are broken];

'Make him drunk.' He shall be shattered in his strength.

Καὶ μὴν εἰς γελοιασμὸν ἦν . Ὅτι καὶ σὺ ἐχλεύαζες τὸν Ἰσραὴλ , ὡς οὐ δι' ἁμαρτίας , ἀλλὰ δι' ἀδυναμίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτῶν τιμωρούμενον
「他確實成了笑柄。」因為你也曾嘲笑以色列,彷彿他受懲罰不是因為罪,而是因為他們的神無能。
'And indeed he was a laughingstock.' Because you too mocked Israel, as though he were being punished not on account of sin, but on account of the powerlessness of their God.

Καὶ ἐν κλοπαῖς σου . Κλέπτοντας , φησὶν , εὗρες τὰ σὰ , ὅτι ἐπολέμεις τὸν Ἰσραήλ
「並在你的偷竊中。」他說:你藉著攻打以色列來竊取,找到了自己的(不義之財)。
'And in your thefts.' He says: you found your own [gain] through theft, because you made war on Israel.

Τοῦτο γὰρ ἁρμόσει καὶ κατὰ δαιμόνων , τῶν μηδὲν μὲν προαδικηθέντων , δωρεὰν δὲ ἡμῖν πολεμούντων
因為這話也適用於那些鬼魔——他們未曾先受任何虧待,卻無故與我們爭戰。
For this will also apply to the demons, who, having suffered no prior wrong, wage war against us without cause.

'With the mouth of a pit.' [That is,] in the shape of a ravine.

He still threatens against the land of Moab, as having insulted God himself by saying:

Οὐκ ἰσχύει σώζειν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν Ἰσραήλ
「神不能拯救以色列。」
'God is not able to save Israel.'
1:1036⧉ ⤴︎
Οὐχὶ τὸ ἱκανόν; Οὐχ ὡς προσδοκῶν , ὅτι ἀνταπόδοσίς ἐστιν , οὕτως ἔπραξεν , ἢ οὕτως; οὐ πᾶσαν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ δύναμιν εἰσήνεγκεν εἰς τὴν κατ' ἐμοῦ ὕβριν; Βοήσατε ἐπ' ἄνδρας κειράδας αὐχμοῦ . Ἐπὶ τοὺς κεκαλλωπισμένους ἄνδρας τῆς Μωαβίτιδος·
「這豈不夠了嗎?」不是說他這樣行是期待有所回報;或作如此理解:他豈不是傾盡自己全部的力量,來對我肆行侮慢嗎?「你們要為那乾旱中猶自修飾整齊的人哀號。」指的是摩押地那些妝飾華美的人;
'Was it not enough?' Not as one expecting recompense did he act thus — or, understood thus: did he not bring the whole of his own power to bear in insolence against me? 'Cry out over the men trimmed amid drought.' [This means] over the beautified men of the land of Moab;

Ἢ οὕτως , ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφείλοντας αὐχμώδεις εἶναι , καὶ πενθεῖν διὰ τὰς ἁμαρτίας·
或作如此理解:指那些本應蓬頭垢面、且當為自己的罪哀慟的人;
or, understood thus: concerning those who ought to be squalid, and to mourn because of their sins;

κειρομένους δὲ καὶ τρυφῶντας διὰ καταφρόνησιν
卻反倒修飾整潔、耽於逸樂,出於輕慢之心。
but who instead are groomed and live luxuriously out of contempt.

Ὡς κλαυθμὸν Ἰαζὴρ ἀποκλαύσομαι . Ὡς τὴνἸαζὴρ , φησὶν , οὕτως καὶ τὴν Σεβαμὴν ποιήσω
「我要如雅謝的哀哭那樣哀哭。」祂說:我要照著我向雅謝所行的,照樣向西比瑪施行。
'I will weep as with the weeping of Jazer.' As I did to Jazer, he says, so also will I do to Sebamah.

他提及葡萄園,是因為敵人正在蹂躪各樣果實。

'Your branches passed over the sea.' They were hemmed in by the multitude of the enemies.

'City of Jazer.' The same fate that befell Jazer has befallen you also.

'It was boiled away.' The joy of the land of Moab, he says, was cut short together [with it].

因為他們才剛要歡慶,忿怒便隨即臨到他們身上。
For no sooner did they happen to begin rejoicing than the wrath fell upon them.

'And there was wine.' But not even the wine, he says, dripping from the grape-cluster laid in the winepress, got as far as being trodden;

for no sooner did they come to tread it than the report of the enemies checked them.

'In the morning they did not tread.' That is [to say]: they shall be dried up;

'Therefore the heart of Moab shall be like flutes.' The flute cries out under the force of another's breath blowing into it.

Βιαζόμενοι τοιγαροῦν ὑπὸ τῶν πολεμίων βοήσουσι , κἀγὼ δὲ ὑπὸ τῆς ἑαυτῶν ὕβρεως συνωθούμενος κεκράξομαι ἐπ' αὐτούς
於是他們被敵人所逼迫,就要哀號;而我也因他們自身的狂傲所催逼,要向他們發出呼喊。
Being forced, then, by the enemies, they will cry out; and I too, driven on by their own insolence, will cry out against them.

'How has he been transformed?' That is: how has he been overturned? 'Behold, like an eagle.' There is no one among the sons of Israel who ought to inherit the cities of the tribe of Gilead, because the Ammonites have taken these.

Why has he taken possession of Melchol? Melchol is both an idol, and a king of the Ammonites called by this name.

"Gird yourselves with sackcloth." He enjoins the cities of the Ammonites to lament one another's calamities.

"It has seized strength." And the hills are strongholds in times of necessity;

而對抗鬼魔迷惑之爭戰則始於基督降臨,並將於世界的末了完結。
But [the war] against demonic error began to take place from the coming of Christ, and it will have its end at the consummation [of the age].

「除非使之無法通行。」使鬼魔再無棲身之所,因為人得了釋放,偶像的廟宇也被傾覆。
"Unless it be made impassable." So that the demons may no longer have anywhere to lodge, since human beings are being set free, and the idol-shrines are being overthrown.

"Behold, like an eagle." [Meaning] the one who is about to destroy her.

「她怎麼沒有棄城而逃?」一聽見敵情,人們往往棄城逃往鄉村。
"How has she not abandoned the city?" At the [mere] report of enemies, [people] would abandon their cities and flee to the villages.

"How has it been broken." The hammer of all the earth, that shattered the inhabited world — Babylon, or equally idolatry.

"Search her out." From your very thoughts, pry out and uproot idolatry.

"Dry up all her fruits." According to the historical sense, the tyrants of Babylon;

"Behold, I am against you, O insolent one." This may also be understood as directed against the synagogue of the Jews.

Τὴν δὲ τούτων ἐρημίαν σημαίνει διὰ τῶν Σειρήνων , ὡς ἀνθρωπομόρφων λοιπὸν δαιμονίων , ἢ καὶ ᾠδικῶν ὀρνέων , διὰ τὴν ἐρημίαν οἰκούντων τοὺς τόπους
他藉著「海妖」(塞壬)表明這些地方的荒涼——牠們其實是人形的鬼魔,或也是善鳴之鳥,因該地荒蕪而棲居其中。
And he signifies their desolation by the Sirens — beings that are, in effect, man-shaped demons, or else singing birds, that inhabit the places because of their desolation.

"And who is this shepherd?" For when the good shepherd is delivering us, the enemy can do nothing to us.

"A destroying scorching wind." Beyond the historical sense, understand this of those aided by the Holy Spirit, who dry up and destroy the streams of evil.

"And you shall not spare." That is, do not be terrified by the threat of the demons.

Ἔπλησε τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ . Ἐξείλκυσάς με τῆς ἐμῆς τρυφῆς , τουτέστι τῶν θείων μαθημάτων
「他使自己的肚腹飽足。」「你把我從我的喜樂中拉走」——亦即從那神聖的教訓中[拉走]。
"He has filled his belly." "You have dragged me away from my delight"—that is, from the divine teachings.

Ἢ καὶ οὕτως , Ἐντρυφῶν ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐπλήρωσε τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ
或者也可如此理解:「他因享用我而使自己的肚腹飽足。」
Or also thus: "Delighting himself in me, he filled his belly."
