And when he did not at once confess the sin, but said:
1:631
'I heard the sound of Your voice, O Lord, and I knew that I was naked, and I hid myself.' God was not angered, He did not straightway turn away, but He deigns to give him a second reply and says:
1:632
'Who told you that you are naked, unless it be that you have eaten from the tree of which alone I commanded you not to eat?' Consider with me the depth of the words of God's wisdom.
1:633
Τί λέγεις, φησίν, ὅτι Γυμνός εἰμι, τήν δέ ἁμαρτίαν σου κρύβεις;
'Why do you say,' He asks, 'that you are naked, while you hide your sin?'
1:634
Μή νομίζεις με τό σῶμά σου μόνο ὁρᾶν, τήν δέ καρδίαν καί τάς ἐνθυμήσεις σου μή ὁρᾷν;
'Do you suppose that I see only your body, but do not see your heart and your thoughts?'
1:635
For Adam, being deceived, hoped that God did not know his sin, and he was saying thus within himself, as it were:
1:636
'If I say that I am naked,' he says, 'God, not knowing, will have to say...'
1:637
'Then I shall be able to deny it and to say:'
1:638
'I do not know'; and I shall be able to escape His notice and to receive back again my first robe.
1:639
'But if not, at least He will not cast me out, at least He will not banish me!'
1:640
While he was pondering these things—as even now many do, and I myself first of all, hiding our own evils—God, not wishing to multiply his condemnation, says:
1:641
'And whence did you know that you are naked, unless it be that you have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?'—as if to say:
1:642
Καί () ὅλως ἐμέ κρύπτειν οἴεσαι;
'And do you imagine that you can hide from Me altogether?'
1:643
Οὐ γινώσκω ἐγώ τί πέπραχας;
'Do I not know what you have done?'
1:644
'Yes, it is true, O Master, I transgressed Your commandment; I sinned in listening to the counsel of the woman; I erred greatly in acting upon her word and disobeying Yours; have mercy on me!' But he does not say this; he is not humbled, he does not bend; the neck of his heart is a sinew of iron—such indeed as mine also is, wretch that I am.
1:645
For had he said this, he would have remained in Paradise, and that whole cycle of the countless evils which he underwent when banished, and lying so many ages in Hades, he could have gained—that is, been spared—by that one utterance made then.
1:646
This, then, is what I promised to say.
1:647
And hear what follows, and know that the word is true, and that there is not the least falsehood in it.
1:648
'In the hour that you eat from the tree of which alone I commanded you not to eat, you shall die the death'—that is, the death of the soul, which came to pass in that very hour, on account of which he was stripped bare of the immortal robe.
1:649
But God foretold nothing more, and nothing more came to pass.
1:650
For God, foreknowing that Adam would sin, and wishing to forgive him upon his repentance, pronounced nothing more against him beforehand, as has been said.
1:651
But when he denied his sin and did not repent even when convicted by God (for he said:
1:652
'The woman whom You gave me, she deceived me'—
1:653
O heedless soul, saying as it were to God:
1:654
'The woman whom You gave me, she deceived me'—just as now I too suffer, humble and wretched as I am, and I never wish to be humbled and to say from my soul that I am the cause of my own perdition, but rather I say, 'So-and-so incited me to do and to say such and such; so-and-so counselled me to work this or that'—O wretched soul, that pours forth words full of sin!
1:655
O words more shameless and more defiled than a shameless and defiled soul!)—so then, when Adam had spoken thus, God then says to him:
1:656
'In toil and sweat shall you eat your bread, and the earth shall bring forth for you thorns and thistles'; and finally:
1:657
'Earth you are, and unto earth shall you return.' 'I said,' He declares, 'that you should repent and be once more in your former estate.'
1:658
'But since you are so hard, depart henceforth from Me, and your exile shall suffice you for chastisement, for earth you are and unto earth shall you return.'
1:659
Ἤδη οὖν ἔγνως ὅτι μετά τήν παράβασιν διά τό μή μετανοῆσαι καί εἰπεῖν Ἥμαρτον, καί ἐξορίζεται καί ἐν κόπῳ καί ἱδρῶτι διάγειν κελεύεται καί εἰς τήν γῆν, ἐξ ἧς ἐλήφθη, διά τοῦτο κατεκρίθη;
Now, then, have you understood that after the transgression it was because he did not repent and say 'I have sinned' that he is both banished and commanded to live in toil and sweat, and is condemned to the earth from which he was taken?
1:660
And this is clear from what follows.
1:661
Therefore, having left him, He comes to Eve, wishing to show that she too would justly be cast out along with him, since she was unwilling to repent; and He says:
1:662
'What is this that you have done?'—in order that at least she might say 'I have sinned.'
1:663
For tell me, what other need had God to speak these words to her, if not entirely that she might say:
1:664
'In my folly, O Master, I, humble and wretched, did this, having disobeyed You, my Master.'
1:665
But since neither did she find it in her to say 'I have sinned,' they are cast out of the delight, they are banished from Paradise and from God.
1:666
But consider with me the depth of the mysteries of the God who loves mankind, and learn and be taught from this: that had they repented, they would not have been cast out, they would not have been condemned, they would not have been condemned to return to the earth from which they were taken.
1:667
But when they had been cast out, and at once from that moment had fallen into sweat and bodily toils, and had begun to hunger and thirst, to shiver and tremble together and to suffer such things as we ourselves suffer today—having, that is, gained a fuller sense of this misfortune and of their fall, and not only so, but also of their own foolishness and of God's ineffable compassion—then, walking and sitting outside Paradise, they repented, they wept, they lamented, they smote their faces, they tore and dragged out their own hair, bewailing their own hardness of heart; and this not for one day, nor two, nor ten, but, believe me, throughout their whole life.
1:668
Πῶς γάρ καί μή κλαίειν ἀεί καί διηνεκῶς τόν Δεσπότην ἐκεῖνον τόν ἥμερον ἐνθυμούμενοι, τήν τρυφήν ἐκείνην τήν ἄφραστον, τά κάλλη τῶν ἀνθέων ἐκείνων τά ἄρρητα, τόν ἀμέριμνον βίον καί ἄμοχθον, τάς τῶν ἀγγέλων ἀνόδους καί καθόδους, τάς πρός αὐτούς;
For how could they but weep always and unceasingly, calling to mind that gentle Master, that ineffable delight, the unspeakable beauty of those flowers, the carefree and toilless life, the ascents and descents of the angels to them?
1:669
Just as those who behave arrogantly toward their own master and exalt themselves above their fellow-servants fall away from their freedom of access to him, and from his love and goodwill, and are banished by him to a far country and, by his command, are subjected to countless trials, so that in laboring and being worn down more and more they perceive the ease which they once enjoyed and the loss of the good things from which they fell—in the same manner did the first-formed also suffer, having been in Paradise and enjoying those good things, then having fallen from them and been banished.
1:670
Since they perceived their fall, they lamented always, they wept always, calling upon the compassion of their Master.
1:671
Ἀλλά τί πολύς ἐν ἐλέει καί βραδύς ἐν κολάσει;
But what of Him who is great in mercy and slow to punish?
1:672
For since He saw them humbled, He does not yet loose the sentence that had been pronounced—doing this for our correction, and that no one might exalt himself against the Maker of all—but, foreknowing as God both this man's fall and his repentance, He foreordained entirely, before He made all things, both the season and the time, and how and when He would recall him from exile by judgments unutterable and untraceable to every living breath.
1:673
For even if these things were revealed to some and they should wish to write them down, neither time nor paper nor ink would suffice, nor could the whole world contain the very books.
1:674
As therefore, moved with compassion, He foreordained and foretold, so indeed He also did.
1:675
And those whom He cast out of Paradise on account of their shamelessness and their impenitent heart and mind, when they had fittingly repented and been worthily humbled and had wept and lamented, He Himself—the only Only-begotten Son and Word of His own pre-eternal Father—having come down, as you all know, not only became man like unto them, but also consented to die as they did, choosing a violent and shameful death, and having descended into Hades, from thence He raised them up.
1:676
οὖν τοσαῦτα, ὅσα καθ ἑκάστην ἀκούεις, παθών διαὐτούς, ἵνα αὐτούς ἀπό τῆς μακρᾶς ἐκείνης ἐξορίας ἀνακαλέσηται, εἰ μετενόησαν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ, οὐκ ἄν αὐτούς συνεπάθησε;
He, then, who suffered on their behalf so many things as you hear of daily, in order to recall them from that long exile—had they repented in Paradise, would He not have shown them compassion?
1:677
Καί πῶς οὐχί φύσει φιλάνθρωπος καί διά τοῦτο ποιήσας αὐτόν, ἵνα τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦ τῶν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ ἀπολαύῃ καί δοξάζῃ τόν εὐεργέτην αὐτοῦ;
And how would He not—He who by nature loves mankind, and who for this very reason made him, that he might enjoy His good things in Paradise and glorify his Benefactor?
1:678
Yes, truly, brethren, this, I think, would have come to pass.
1:679
But that you may learn the rest also, and believe the word yet more, hear what follows!
1:680
Had they repented while still within Paradise, they would have received back that very Paradise and nothing more.
1:681
Ἐπεί δέ ἐξεβλήθησαν διά τό ἀμετανόητον αὐτῶν, μετά δέ ταῦτα μετανοήσαντες ἔκλαυσαν, ἐθλίβησαν ἅπερ, ὡς εἶπον, οὐ μή ἔπαθον, εἰ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ μετανόησαν , ὑπέρ τῶν πόνων τούτων καί ἱδρώτων καί κόπων καί τῆς καλῆς μετανοίας αὐτῶν θέλων Δεσπότης Θεός τιμῆσαι καί δοξάσαι αὐτούς, οὐ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί ποιῆσαι αὐτούς ἅπαντα ἐκεῖνα τά δεινά ἐπιλαθέσθαι, τί ποιεῖ;
But since they were cast out because of their impenitence, and afterward, having repented, they wept and were afflicted with those things which, as I said, they would not have suffered had they repented in Paradise—the Master God, wishing to honor and glorify them for these pains and sweats and toils and for their good repentance, and not only so, but also to make them forget all those grievous things, what does He do?
1:682
祂降到陰間,將他們復活起來後,並不是把他們重新恢復到他們所墮落離開的樂園,乃是把他們帶上到那諸天之上的天;
Having descended into Hades and raised them up, He did not restore them again to Paradise, whence they had fallen, but led them up to that very heaven of heavens;
1:683
καί καθίσας Δεσπότης ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί προανάρχου Πατρός αὐτοῦ, τί λέγεις ποιῆσαι αὐτόν, τόν δοῦλον μέν αὐτοῦ κατά φύσιν, πατέρα δέ αὐτοῦ χρηματίσαντα κατά χάριν;
and the Master, having sat down at the right hand of God, His own pre-eternal Father, what do you say He did with him—him who by nature was His servant, but who by grace was called his father?
1:684
Εἶδες εἰς οἷον ὕψος αὐτόν διά τήν μετάνοιαν αὐτοῦ καί ταπείνωσιν καί τούς θρήνους αὐτοῦ καί τά δάρκυα Δεσπότης ἀνήγαγεν;
Do you see to what a height the Master led him up on account of his repentance and humility and his lamentations and his tears?
1:685
O the power of repentance and of tears!
1:686
O the ocean of ineffable love for mankind and of untraceable mercy, brethren!
1:687
祂尊榮並榮耀了他們,也照樣尊榮直到如今、並從今以後如此行的人,無論是世俗中人還是修道者;
And He honored and glorified them, and those who thus act until now and shall so act from now on, whether they be men of the world or monks;
1:688
'Amen,' said the true God, 'I will never forsake them, but I will declare them to be My brothers and friends, fathers and mothers and kinsmen and fellow-heirs with Me; and I have glorified and will glorify them both in heaven above and on earth below, and of their life and gladness and glory there shall never be an end.'
1:689
Τί οὖν, εἰπέ μοι, τούς πρωτοπλάστους ὠφέλησεν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ ἄπονος διαγωγή καί ἀμέριμνος, ἀδελφέ, ῥαθυμήσαντας καί τῇ πρός Θεόν ἀπιστίᾳ καταφρονήσαντας καί τήν ἐντολήν παραβάντας αὐτοῦ;
What, then, tell me, did the toilless and carefree life in Paradise profit the first-formed, my brother, when they grew slothful and, by their unbelief toward God, despised Him and transgressed His commandment?
1:690
因為他們若信了祂,夏娃就不會以那蛇為更可信的,亞當也不會以夏娃比祂更可信,他們必謹守自己,不吃那樹的果子;
For had they believed Him, Eve would not have deemed the serpent more trustworthy, nor would Adam have deemed Eve more trustworthy than Him, but they would have kept from eating of the plant;
1:691
yet on the other hand they were in no way harmed by the exile, but rather received the greatest benefit, and this came to pass for the salvation of us all.
1:692
For our Master, having come down from on high, by His own death loosed the death that was against us, utterly abolishing the condemnation that came from our forefather's transgression, and through holy baptism regenerating and refashioning us and perfectly delivering us from this; and He sets us in this world entirely free and not tyrannically driven by the enemy, but honoring us with the self-determination we had from the beginning, He rather gives us strength against him, so that those who will may easily overcome him beyond all the saints who lived before Christ's coming; and when we die, we are not, like those of old, brought down into Hades, but into heaven and into the delight and enjoyment there—now indeed in measure, but after the resurrection from the dead we are counted worthy to enjoy the eternal joy wholly and entirely.
1:693
Let those, then, who will, not make excuses, nor let them say that we are wholly driven by Adam's transgression and dragged down to sin.
1:694
For those who think and say this consider the coming of our Master and God to have been in vain and to no purpose—which is a saying of heretics and not of believers.
1:695
Διά τί γάρ κατῆλθενἤ τίνος ἕνεκα θανάτου ἐγεύσατο, εἰ μή ὅτι πάντως διά τό λῦσαι τό ἐκ τῆς ἁμαρτίας κατάκριμα καί ἐλευθερῶσαι τό γένος ἡμῶν ἀπό τῆς δουλείας καί ἐνεργείας τοῦ ἀντικειμένου ἐχθροῦ;
For why did He come down, or on account of what did He taste death, if not entirely in order to loose the condemnation that came from sin and to free our race from the bondage and activity of the adversary enemy?
1:696
For this is true self-determination: to be in no way whatsoever mastered by any other.
1:697
For we were sinners from him who sinned, transgressors from him who transgressed, ourselves also becoming slaves of sin from him who was a slave of sin, accursed and dead from him who was accursed and dead; and from him who was wrought upon by the counsel of the evil one and enslaved to him and lost his self-determination, being wrought upon as his children and oppressed, we were tyrannically ruled over.
1:698
但神既降下來,就成了肉身,像我們一樣生為人,卻是無罪的人;祂廢除了罪,使成孕與出生都得以成聖,並漸漸長大,賜福了人生的每一階段;
But God, having come down, was made flesh and was born as we also are, a man without sin, and He loosed sin, sanctifying both conception and birth, and being reared little by little He blessed every age;
1:699
and having become a perfect man, He then began His preaching, teaching us not to leap forward in anything and forestall our elders in understanding and virtue—especially the young, who are not men in prudence.
1:700
He took upon Himself the things done on your behalf, and having kept all the commandments of His own God and Father, He loosed the transgression and freed the transgressors from condemnation.
1:701
He became a servant, taking upon Himself the form of a servant, and He led us servants back to the dignity of masters, appointing us as masters over the former tyrant — and the saints bear witness to this, they who even after death drive him and his ministers away as feeble things.
1:702
Everyone who hangs upon a tree is accursed; and thus He loosed the whole curse of Adam.
1:703
He died, and by His own death He destroyed death.
1:704
He rose again, and abolished the power and working of the enemy, who through death and sin held authority against us.
1:705
For having infused into the death-bearing venom and poison of sin the ineffable, life-giving energy of His Godhead and His flesh, He wholly redeemed our whole race from the working of the enemy; and through holy baptism and the communion of His immaculate mysteries — His precious Body and Blood — cleansing us and giving us life, He restores us holy and sinless. Yet at once He leaves us to be honoured with free will, that we may be seen serving the Master not by constraint but by our own choice.
1:706
And just as in the beginning Adam was in Paradise free, apart from sin and from constraint, yet by his free will obeyed the enemy and, being deceived, transgressed the commandment of God, so also we, being regenerated from holy baptism, are released from bondage and become possessed of free will; and unless we obey the enemy by our own will, he cannot in any other way work anything against us.
1:707
Εἰ γάρ πρό τοῦ νόμου καί τῆς Χριστοῦ παρουσίας, τῶν βοηθημάτων τούτων ἁπάντων χωρίς, πολλοί καί ἀναρίθμητοι τῷ Θεῷ εὐηρέστησαν καί ἄμεπτοι ἀπεδείχθησαν, ἐξ ὧν τόν δίκαιον μέν Ἐνώχ μετέθετο καί τῇ μεταθέσει τοῦτον τετίμηκεν, Ἠλίαν δέ πυρίνῳ ἅρματι εἰς οὐρανόν ἀνελάβετο, τί ἀπολογησόμεθα ἡμεῖς, οἱ μετά τήν χάριν καί τήν τοσαύτην καί τηλικαύτην εὐεργεσίαν, μετά τήν τοῦ θανάτου καί τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἀναίρεσιν, () μετά τήν τοῦ βαπτίσματος ἀναγέννησιν καί τήν τῶν ἁγίων ἀγγέλων παραφυλακήν καί αὐτήν τήν ἐπισκίασιν καί ἐπέλευσιν τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος, μηδέ ἴσοι τοῖς πρό τῆς χάριτος εὑρισκόμενοι, ἀλλά ῥᾳθυμοῦντες καί τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ καταφρονοῦντες καί αὐτάς παραβαίνοντες;
For if before the Law and before the coming of Christ, apart from all these helps, many and countless souls were well-pleasing to God and shown to be blameless — among whom He translated righteous Enoch and honoured him with that translation, and took up Elijah into heaven in a chariot of fire — what defence shall we make, we who after grace and so great and so exalted a benefaction, after the abolition of death and sin, after the regeneration of baptism, after the guardianship of the holy angels, and after the very overshadowing and coming of the Holy Spirit, are found to be not even equal to those before grace, but slothful, despising the commandments of God and transgressing them?
1:708
That we shall be punished more severely than those who sinned under the Law, if we persist in wickedness, holy Paul made clear when he said:
1:709
'For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?' Let each of us, then, who falls into any sin whatever, blame and reproach not Adam but himself, and let each of us show worthy repentance as that man did, if indeed he wishes to attain eternal life in the Lord.
1:710
But if you will not, and will not by every means take pains either to keep yourselves sinless by keeping all the commandments, or, when transgressing in anything, to repent unto death, each bitterly bewailing his own sin — but instead abide in your hardness and impenitent disposition — thus says the Lord:
1:711
地必戰抖,向著那些人發作,就是那些在這麼多、這麼大的神蹟之後,在我向世人顯現之後,在我於世上廣傳這麼大的教訓之後,仍舊拖延、不信、不順從我話語的人;
The earth shall quake against those who, after so many and so great wonders, after My manifestation in the world, after so great a teaching as I spread abroad in the world, still delay and disbelieve and are disobedient to My words;
1:712
and it shall be rent asunder into many pieces, unable to bear carrying upon its back the thankless and stiff-necked and disobedient towards Me; and they shall see their downfall drawn near before their feet, and shall tremble.
1:713
For when the earth trembles, when heaven is shaken and rolled up with a rushing sound like a scroll, their unbending and pitiless hearts shall be startled by those fearful terrors, like a hare in the hour of its slaughter.
1:714
And the light shall be darkened, the stars shall fall, the sun and the moon shall be quenched upon them, and out of the clefts of the earth fire shall rise up, overflowing like the deeps of the seas.
1:715
The earth shall be shaken to its foundations, and the fire shall be sent forth not little by little but all at once, and shall cover the whole earth, and the whole earth shall become a river of fire.
1:716
What, then, shall they do at that time, those who say:
1:717
Εἴθε με ἠφίεσαν ὧδε καί τήν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐγώ οὐκ ἤθελον;
'Would that they had left me here, and I would not have wanted the kingdom of heaven'?
1:718
What shall become of those who now laugh and speak thus:
1:719
Τί οὖν κελεύεις κλαίειν ἡμᾶς καθ ἑκάστην; Οἱ δέ καί ἀντιλογίαςἤ γογγυσμούςἤ καί τά χείρω τούτων ἀπεργαζόμενοι, τί τότε ἀπολογήσονται;
'Why, then, do you bid us weep every day?' And those who work out contradictions or murmurings or things even worse than these — what shall they answer at that time?
1:720
Πόσα γάρ ὑμᾶς, ἄθλιοι, εἰκότως πρός ἡμᾶς εἴπῃ, διά προφητῶν, δι ἀποστόλων, διά πάντων ὁμοῦ τῶν δούλων καί διἐμοῦ αὐτοῦ προεῖπον καί παρήγγειλα;
'For how many things, O wretched ones, might I fittingly say to you — the things I foretold and enjoined upon you through prophets, through apostles, through all My servants together, and through Myself?'
1:721
'Did you not hear My gospels saying:'
1:722
Μακάριοι οἱ κλαίοντες νῦν, ὅτι γελάσονται;
'Blessed are they that weep now, for they shall laugh'?
1:723
'But you laughed, roaring with laughter, chatting with one another and prolonging your idle talk, inviting one another to feasts and pampering your bellies.'
1:724
Τί στενή πύλη καί τεθλιμμένη ὁδός ἀπάγουσα εἰς τήν ζωήν καί ὅτι Βιαστή ἐστιν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν καί βιασταί ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν, ὑμεῖς ἀνέκεισθε ἐπί στρωμνῶν ἁπαλῶν καί διά πάντων τήν ἄνεσιν ἐδιώκετε;
'That the gate is narrow and the way is strait which leads to life, and that the kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force — while you reclined upon soft beddings and in all things pursued ease?'
1:725
θέλων εἶναι πρῶτος, ἔστω πάντων ἔσχατος καί πάντων δοῦλος καί πάντων διάκονος, ὑμεῖς τάς πρωτοκλισίας καί πρωτοκαθεδρίας, ἀρχάς τε καί ἡγεμονίας καί διακονίας καί μεγέθη ἀξιωμάτων προετιμήσασθε, καί ὑποταγῆναιἤ δουλεῦσαι ἐν ταπεινώσει ψυχῆς εὐτελεῖ καί πτωχῷ καί ἀπερριμένῳ οὐκ ἠθελήσατε;
'Whoever would be first, let him be last of all and servant of all and minister of all' — yet you preferred the first places and chief seats, offices and governorships and stewardships and great dignities, and you were not willing to be subject or to serve in humility of soul one lowly and poor and cast aside?
1:726
Ὅσα θέλετε, ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, καί ὑμεῖς ὁμοίως ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς τάς ἑαυτῶν θεραπείας μόνας καί τά θελήματα καί τάς ἐπιθυμίας ἐξεπληρώσατε, πλεονεκτοῦντες, ἁρπάζοντες, ἀδικοῦντες καί ἑαυτούς μόνους ἐθεραπεύσατε;
'Whatever you would that men should do to you, do you also likewise to them' — yet you fulfilled only your own comforts and wishes and desires, being covetous, seizing, wronging others, and pampering yourselves alone?
1:727
Ἐάν τίς σε ῥαπίσῃ εἰς τήν δεξιάν σου σιαγόνα, στρέψον αὐτῷ καί τήν ἄλλην, οἱ μέν ἐγελᾶτε, οἱ δέ οὐδέ ἀκοῦσαι τοῦτο ἠνείχεσθε, ἀλλά κακῶς με τοῦτο καί ἀδίκως () προστάξαις ἐλέγχετε;
'If anyone strike you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also' — some of you laughed, while others could not even bear to hear it, but reproached Me as having enjoined this wrongly and unjustly?
1:728
Ἐάν τίς σε ἀγγαρεύσῃ μίλιον ἕν, ὕπαγε μετ αὐτοῦ δύο, οὐ μόνον οὐδείς ἐξ ὑμῶν τοῦτο πεποίηκεν, ἀλλ οἱ πλείονες καί τούς ἀδελφούς ἠγγαρεύσατε;
'If anyone compel you to go one mile, go with him two' — not only has none of you done this, but the greater part of you have even compelled your brethren?
1:729
Μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καί διώξωσι καί εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρόν ρῆμα καθ ὑμῶν ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ, ὑμεῖς οὐδέ λόγον σκληρόν ἀκοῦσαι ἠνείχεσθε οὐ μόνον ἐκ τῶν ὁμοίων ὑμῶν, ἀλλ οὐδέ ὑπό τῶν προεχόντων;
'Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you and speak all manner of evil against you, lying, for My sake' — yet you could not bear to hear even a harsh word, not only from your equals, but not even from those set above you?
1:730
Χαίρετε καί ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ἐπί τοῖς διωγμοῖς καί ταῖς θλίψεσιν, ὑμεῖς τούς ἐπαίνους μᾶλλον καί τήν τιμήν καί τήν δόξαν ἠσπάσασθε, ἐπί δέ τοῖς τοιούτοις ἀπελέγεσθε καί αὐτήν ὑμῶν τήν ζωήν;
'Rejoice and be exceeding glad in persecutions and afflictions' — yet you rather welcomed praises and honour and glory, and at such things you renounced even your own life?
1:731
Οὐχί ἐμοῦ μακαρίζοντος τούς φτωχούς, ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἐποθήσατέ ποτε ἀπό ψυχῆς γενέσθαι πτωχοί;
Is it not that, when I called the poor blessed, you never once longed from your soul to become poor?
1:732
Οὐκ ἐμοῦ τούς πραεῖς τήν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν κληρονομεῖν λέγοντος, ὑμεῖς ὡς θῆρες ἄγριοι διέκεισθε εἰς τούς μή τάχιον ποιοῦντας ὑμῶν τά θελήματα;
Is it not that, when I said the meek should inherit the kingdom of heaven, you were disposed like savage beasts towards those who did not swiftly do your bidding?
1:733
When again you saw them transgressing My commandments, were you then sympathetic and moderate, and did you say, 'Forgive,' as the Lord said?
1:734
Was it not you who spoke thus, whenever I said:
1:735
'Pray for those who despitefully use you, love your enemies and do good to those who hate you' — 'That belongs to the apostles, that belongs to the great saints!'
1:736
Ἐπεί τίς τοῦτο ἄλλος ποιῆσαι δύναται; Ἄθλιοι, καί ὑμεῖς διατί οὐκ ἐγίνεσθε ἅγιοι;
'For who else can do this?' Wretched ones, and you — why did you not become saints?
1:737
Did you not hear Me saying:
1:738
'Be holy, for I am holy' — yet you remained in the uncleanness of your defilements and lawless deeds?
1:739
And to the women He will say:
1:740
Did you not hear, in the churches, those who read and said:
1:741
the story of holy Mary of Egypt, once a harlot; of Theodora the adulteress who afterwards became a worker of miracles; and again:
1:742
Ξένης, τῆς ὄντως ξένης καί θαυμαστῆς; Οὐκ ἠκούσατε ὅπως καί γονεῖς καί πλοῦτον καί μνηστῆρας αὐτούς κατέλιπον καί ἐν εὐτελείᾳ καί ταπεινώσει ἐδούλευσάν μοι καί ἐγένοντο ἅγιαι;
of Xene, the truly strange and wondrous one? Did you not hear how they forsook parents and wealth and suitors, and in lowliness and humility served Me and became holy?
1:743
Διά τί οὖν καί ὑμεῖς ταύτας καί τάς τοιαύτας, αἱ μέν πόρναι τάς πόρνας, αἱ δέ ἄσωτοι τάς ἀσώτους, αἱ δέ ὕπανδροι τάς ἁμαρτησάσας ὑπάνδρους, αἱ δέ παρθένοι τάς παρθένους καί ὁμοίας ὑμῶν οὐκ ἐμιμήσασθε;
Why, then, did you also not imitate these and such as these — the harlots the harlots, the profligate the profligate, the married women who had sinned the married women, the virgins the virgins and those like yourselves?
1:744
And to the men, both kings and rulers, He will likewise say:
1:745
Did you not hear how David, having sinned — and when the prophet Nathan came to him and reproved him concerning his sin — did not contradict, was not angered, did not hide his transgression, but rising up from his throne fell down to the ground before all the people and said:
1:746
καί οὐκ ἐπαύσατο ἡμέρας τε καί νυκτός κλαίων ὁμοῦ καί θρηνῶν;
and he ceased not, day and night, at once weeping and lamenting?
1:747
Did you not hear this same man saying:
1:748
'For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping; because of the voice of my groaning my bone cleaved to my flesh; I am become like a pelican of the wilderness'? And again:
1:749
'I am weary with my groaning; every night I wash my bed, I water my couch with my tears'? Did you not hear him saying:
1:750
Κύριε Θεός μου, () εἰ ἐποίησα τοῦτο, εἰ ἔστιν ἀδικίας ἐν χερσί μου, εἰ ἀνταπέδωκα τοῖς ἀνταποδιδοῦσί μι κακά, ἀποπέσοιμι ἄρα ἀπό τῶν ἐχθρῶν μου κενός, καταδιώξαι ἄρα ἐχθρός τήν ψυχήν μου καί καταλάβοι καί καταπατήσαι εἰς γῆν τήν ζωήν μου καί τήν δόξαν μου εἰς χοῦν κατασκηνώσαι;
'O Lord my God, if I have done this, if there be iniquity in my hands, if I have rewarded evil to them that rewarded me evil, then let me fall away empty from before my enemies; let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and trample my life down to the ground, and lay my glory in the dust'?
1:751
Διά τί οὖν καί ὑμεῖς τοῦτον καί τούς ὁμοίους αὐτοῦ μή ἐμιμήσασθε;
Why, then, did you also not imitate this man and those like him?
1:752
Μή τούτου ὑμεῖς περιδοξότεροι εἶναι ἐδοκεῖτεἤ πλουσιώτεροι, καί διά τοῦτο ταπεινωθῆναί μοι οὐκ ἠβουλήθητε;
Did you think yourselves more glorious than he, or wealthier, and for this reason were unwilling to humble yourselves before Me?
1:753
你們這些可憐、悲慘的人哪!你們既是必朽壞、必死的,卻想要作獨裁者、作世界的統治者;若在別地有一人不肯順服你們,你們就起來攻擊他,如同攻擊你們卑賤的奴僕,不能忍受他的不服——雖然他也是你們的同伴僕人,你們並不比他多有甚麼;
Wretched and miserable ones! Being corruptible and mortal, you wished to be sole rulers and rulers of the world; and if anywhere in another land there was one unwilling to be subject to you, you rose up against him as against your worthless servant, and could not bear to endure his insubordination — though he too was your fellow-servant, and you had nothing more than he;
1:754
ἐμοί δέ τῷ Ποιητῇ καί Δεσπότῃ ὑμῶν πῶς ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἠθελήσατε ὑποταγῆναι καί δουλεῦσαι ἐν φόβῳ καί τρόμῳ;
yet towards Me, your Maker and Master, how is it that you were unwilling to be subject and to serve in fear and trembling?
1:755
Ἀνταποδιδόντες δέ τοῖς ἁμαρτάνουσιν εἰς ὑμᾶς, τί ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἄρα διελογίζεσθε περί ὧν ὑμεῖς εἰς ἐμέ ἡμαρτάνετε;
When you requited those who sinned against you, what indeed did you reckon within yourselves concerning the sins you committed against Me?
1:756
ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκζητῶν τῶν ἀδικουμένων τά αἵματα;
That there is none who requires the blood of the wronged?
1:757
ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν βλέπων τά παρ ἡμῶν κρυφίως πραττόμενα;
That there is none who sees the things secretly done by us?
1:758
ὅτι ἐπελάθεσθέ μου καί μή ἔχειν ὑπελαμβάνετε τόν ἐπάνω ὑμῶν ὄντα, οὐδέ ἠλπίσατέ ποτε γυμνοί με καί τετραχηλισμένοι παρασταθήσεσθαι;
Or that you forgot Me, and supposed that there is none set over you, and never once hoped that you would be made to stand before Me naked and laid bare?
1:759
Did you not hear Me always saying:
1:760
θέλων εἶναι πάντων πρῶτος, ἔστω πάντων ἔσχατος καί πάντων δοῦλος καί πάντων διάκονος; Πῶς οὐκ ἐφρίσσετε καί ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ὑμῖν ἐθρηνεῖτε καί συνετρίβεσθε, φοβούμενοι μή εἰς ἔπαρσιν ὑπό τῆς ματαίας ἐκείνης καί διακένου ἐλθόντες, () παραβάται ταύτης μου τῆς ἐντολῆς γενόμενοι, τῷ πυρί τούτῳ παραδοθήσεσθε;
'Whoever would be first of all, let him be last of all and servant of all and minister of all'? How did you not shudder and lament and be broken within yourselves, fearing lest, having come into arrogance through that vain and empty ambition, and having become transgressors of this My commandment, you should be delivered over to this fire?
1:761
Οὐκ ἠκούετε πῶς Δαυίδ ὑπό τοῦ στρατηγοῦ αὐτοῦ Σεμεῒ ὑβριζόμενος καί ἀνήρ αἱμάτων καλούμενος, εὐτελέστερον ἑαυτόν ἐκείνου ἔχων ἀπό ψυχῆς, οὐκ ὠργίζετο, ἀλλά καί τούς ἐκεῖνον ἀνελεῖν βουλομένους ἐκώλυσεν;
Did you not hear how David, when he was insulted by his commander Shimei and called a man of blood, holding himself from his soul as more worthless than that man, was not angered, but even restrained those who wished to slay him?
1:762
For the sins they had committed against Me throughout all their life, they repented and wept from their soul in fear and longing, hearing of and believing in this day of My advent and coming and judgement; but you despised My commandments, as though I were one of the cast-off and feeble.
1:763
Henceforth, then, with those whom you chose to be together, whose words and deeds you did and whom you imitated — with these very ones enjoy also the things prepared for them!
1:764
祂也要照樣以那些聖潔的宗主教與這些宗主教相對——就是金口約翰、施捨者約翰、神學家貴格利、伊格那丟、塔拉西烏、梅托丟,以及其餘那些不但以言語、也以行為成為真神之寫照的人;
Thus also against the patriarchs He will set the holy patriarchs — John Chrysostom (the golden-mouthed), John the Almsgiver, Gregory the Theologian, Ignatius, Tarasius, Methodius, and the rest, who not by word alone but also by deed became an image of the true God;
1:765
and, to put it simply, God will judge each patriarch and each metropolitan and each bishop together with the apostles and holy fathers who shone before him in each metropolis and see, setting them all opposite one another — even as you hear Him saying:
1:766
The sheep on the right hand, and the goats on the left, He will say:
1:767
Οὐχί ἔνθα οὗτοι ἐθεράπευσαν καί ἐδούλευσάν μοι, ἐκεῖ καί ὑμεῖς ἐβιώσατε καί εἰς τούς θρόνους αὐτῶν ἐκαθίσατε;
'Was it not there, where these served and ministered to Me, that you too lived and sat upon their thrones?'
1:768
Διά τί ἀκαθάρτοις χερσί καί ἀκαθαρτοτέραις ψυχαῖς τόν ἄχραντον ἐμέ καί ἀμόλυντον κρατεῖν καί ἐσθίειν οὐκ ἐφοβήθητε;
'Why did you not fear to hold and to eat Me — the immaculate and undefiled One — with unclean hands and still more unclean souls?'
1:769
Οὐκ ἐφρίξατε ὅλως, οὐκ ἐτρομάξατε;
'Did you not shudder at all? Did you not tremble?'
1:770
Διά τί τά τῶν πενήτων εἰς τάς ὑμετέρας ἡδονάς καί εἰς τούς ἰδίους καί συγγενεῖς ὑμῶν ἀναλώσατε;
'Why did you spend the goods of the poor upon your own pleasures and upon your own kinsfolk and relatives?'
1:771
Διά τί με χρυσίῳ καί ἀργυρίῳ, ὡς Ἰούδας, ἀπεμπολήσατε;
Why did you sell Me off for silver and gold, as Judas did?
1:772
Διά τί με καί ὡς δοῦλον ἀχρεῖον ἐξαγοράσαντες, εἰς τά τῆς σαρκός με θελήματα διακονεῖν ἀπεχρήσασθε;
Why, having bought Me like a worthless slave, did you abuse Me by making Me serve the desires of the flesh?
1:773
Since, therefore, you did not spare Me, neither shall I spare you.
1:774
Depart from Me, you workers of iniquity, depart!
1:775
In this way, then, fathers by fathers, friends and kinsmen by friends and kinsmen, brothers by brothers, slaves and freemen by slaves and freemen, rich and poor by the rich and the poor, those in marriage by those who lived nobly in marriage, those in freedom by those who lived in freedom, and in a word every sinful man, on that fearful day of judgment, over against himself, unto eternal life and unto that unutterable light, shall behold one like himself and shall be judged by him.
1:776
Each of the sinners, gazing at one like himself—king at king, ruler at ruler, the fornicator who did not repent at the fornicator who repented, poor at poor, slave at slave—and remembering that this other was also a man, having the same soul, the same hands, the same eyes, and in a word all else equally, and that he shared life with him and had a like rank, craft, and calling, yet he was unwilling to imitate him: straightway his mouth is stopped and he remains without defense, having absolutely nothing to say. When, therefore, the worldly see the worldly, and the sinful kings see holy kings at the right hand, and the rich and those under the yoke of life see holy men who were under the yoke, and all who are in torments see men like themselves in the kingdom of heaven—then they shall be put to shame and found without defense, just as that rich man, being fried in the fire, saw Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham.
1:777
βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν ὁμοθυμαδόν συγχορεύοντας;
...dancing together with one accord in the kingdom of heaven?
