and if you wish to learn this with certainty, go through the chapters set forth by that very man—I mean by the holy Arsenius—and you will know from them that this man too is truly a beholder of God.
1:936
Whoever, therefore, imitates them in deed and in toils will truly be counted worthy of the same grace.
1:937
Εὐθυμίου δέ καί Σάβα καί τῶν καθεξῆς ἁγίων τάς πράξεις, τάς ὑπέρ ἄνθρωπον, τίς διηγήσεται;
And the deeds of Euthymius and Sabas and of the saints who came after them, deeds beyond man—who shall recount them?
1:938
For whether before receiving the grace of the Spirit, or after receiving it, no one until now has passed through the darkening of the soul, nor beheld the light of the All-holy Spirit, without labors and many toils and sweat, without violence and straitness and affliction.
1:939
For the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force, since it is also through many afflictions that we must enter into the kingdom of heaven.
1:940
而天國就是有分於聖靈;
And the kingdom of heaven is the partaking of the Holy Spirit;
1:941
for this is what was said, that the kingdom of heaven is within us, namely, that we should be zealous to receive and to have the Holy Spirit within us.
1:942
所以,那些沒有持續的強力、窘迫、卑微與患難的人,不要說我們裡面有聖靈;
Let not those, then, who are without continual violence and straitness and lowliness and affliction say that we have the Holy Spirit within us;
1:943
for without works and sweat and the toils of virtue this reward is not given to anyone.
1:944
Wherefore that saying, spoken thus by many, seems to me to be well put:
1:945
'Show your works,' it says, 'and then demand your wages.'
1:946
of the body and of the dwelling and of the whole world—for it was night, and it became as full day—but since he had received wealth without toil, he also quickly despised it.
1:947
Wherefore, having grown negligent, he lost the whole of that wealth all at once, and to such a degree that he no longer remembered at all that he had ever beheld such glory.
1:948
How, then, do those who have never even been counted worthy to receive or in any measure to behold this glory say that they have the whole of it within themselves? I am at a loss.
1:949
Ἀλλὤ τῆς πωρώσεως, τοῦ σκοτασμοῦ, τῆς ἀγνοίας καί τῆς ματαίας οἰήσεως, ποῦ ποτε τοῦτοἤ διά ποίων γραφῶν μεμαθήκασιν;
Alas for the hardness, alas for the darkening, alas for the ignorance and the vain conceit! Whence, and through what Scriptures, have they learned this?
1:950
Truly they became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened, and they remained in Egypt, that is, in the darkness of their passions and pleasures.
1:951
For those who have longed to see the land of promise—which the eyes of the meek and lowly and poor are counted worthy to behold—accept all straitness and all affliction and lowliness, and vehemently abstain from all and every bodily pleasure and honor and ease.
1:952
And not only so, but they separate themselves from every man, small and great, fleeing them without hatred, that they may be counted worthy to set foot upon it before the course of their present life be cut off from the way.
1:953
For humbling themselves, and being truly disposed as wicked men who have given much offense—nay rather, living as enemies and transgressors of God's commandments—they pass their days downcast and grieved, longing to learn what it might be needful for them to do in order to be reconciled to the Master Christ.
1:954
For this reason, therefore, the Lord grants them not only to know what it is needful to do, but strength also is given them by Him, and endurance, that having fulfilled all that is required, they may see Him Himself and gain God who is over all and in all; and then they dwell as in heaven and have their citizenship there—whether they pass their days in caves or in mountains or in cells, or whether they move about in the midst of cities—and thus they serve Him ever in joy and gladness and unspeakable exultation.
1:955
This, then, is the labor of the saints; this is the practice of those who are led by the Spirit of God.
1:956
Such a one there was even in our own generation: the holy and most blessed, reverent Symeon, who shone like the sun in the midst of the renowned monastery of Studios—he who was once in the midst of the world and among the world's affairs and friends and kinsmen, and who, moreover, so renounced the cares and anxieties and pleasures of this life that he no longer had any memory of them at all, but even banished that memory far from himself; who, moving about in the midst of the multitude of monks, then uttered that blessed saying, declaring: 'The monk ought to be in the monastery as one who both is and is not, and who does not appear—or rather, who is not even known'; which he also interpreted, saying:
1:957
'As being present in body, but not present in spirit; not appearing, except only to the pure in heart through the Holy Spirit; not being known, because of having nothing to do with anyone.'
1:958
O blessed words, by which his angelic way of life beyond man is proclaimed; by which he bore witness for himself, through the Holy Spirit, that he possessed his citizenship in the heavens; by which he intimated his manner of living together with our God, saying that he had nothing to do with anyone.
1:959
This is something no one can accomplish, or truly say, unless he be wholly united, whole with the whole God;
1:960
and if he should say it, he deceives himself.
1:961
For he who says that he does not sin is blind, seeing but dimly; yet he who has God is not able to sin, because His seed abides in him, as says John, the most theological thunder of the apostles.
1:962
And that that man had the whole God within himself, he both said while living, and, having died, he cries out with a loud voice through his own hand-written writing:
1:963
「你要得著神,就不需要書本了。」這事他也藉著他們的作為顯明出來,因為他寫成了一本書,是出於他自己的勞苦——不,更是出於那住在他裡面的靈——而他自己本是未受過文字學問啟蒙的。我們也承認這事,與我們聖潔的父同作見證,並不為著顧惜、免得被某些人看作誇口的,就把這恩惠隱藏起來:就是說,正如一個蓄滿流水的池子,我們聖潔的父也照樣有分於我們主基督的豐滿,被祂那靈的恩典充滿,這恩典就是活水;
'Gain God, and you will have no need of a book.' And this he made plain by their very works, having composed a book out of his own labor—or rather out of the Spirit who dwelt within him—being himself uninitiated in the learning of letters. And we too confess it, bearing joint witness to our holy father, and not hiding the benefaction out of a sparing wish to avoid being thought boastful by some: that just as a reservoir of flowing water, so our holy father partook of the fullness of our Master Christ, and was filled with the grace of His Spirit, which is living water;
1:964
and just as, in turn, from the reservoir someone drinks his fill of the water that overflows and pours out abundantly from the outside, so we too from our holy father saw and received and drank of the grace that ever overflowed and poured out abundantly from him, and from him we washed our faces, our very hands and feet, and then we bathed our whole selves with our whole body, and our very soul, in that immortal water.
1:965
O strange and wonderful mystery, brethren!
1:966
For the discourse is not about me alone, nor has it come to pass in me alone; but hear the evangelist John, what he says concerning this water—or rather, concerning the very Son and Word of the living God, from whom John also grew rich in his word:
1:967
'For whoever drinks,' He says, 'of this water'—the perceptible water, that is—'shall thirst again;'
1:968
'but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst at all; but it shall become in him a spring of water leaping up unto life eternal.'
1:969
And the evangelist, interpreting this, says:
1:970
'This He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were about to receive.'
1:971
因為藉著這樣的水,如同以洗濯一般,邪惡就從魂裡被洗淨;
For by such water, as by a rinsing, wickedness is washed out from the soul;
1:972
but without it, though a man toil much, he will profit nothing.
1:973
And for this reason, since we are utterly unable to hide the talent of our Master and not to proclaim God's gift that has come to us, we openly confess the mercy of God: that we, the unworthy, were filled insatiably from the water which we received through our father from God, and were satisfied unsatisfiably unto the glory of His holy name; and according to the power that is in us, as the least and most useless, we glorified and now do glorify God, who glorified our holy father, and through our father glorified us the lowly and unworthy.
1:974
所以,不要有人以為我說謊、攻擊我自己的魂和我的父,把我看作誇口者和空話連篇的人;
Let no one, then, suppose that I lie and speak against my own soul and against my father, deeming me a boaster and an idle babbler;
1:975
for I know that God will destroy all those who speak the lie, and Paul the divine teaches me to do this, saying: 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed forever, I speak the truth and do not lie.'
1:976
'I know a man fourteen years ago,' and what follows; and again:
1:977
'Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, that we may know the things that have been freely given to us by God—which things also we speak.'
1:978
Τί δέ καί ἐμαυτόν ὠφελήσαιμιἤ τόν ἐμόν πατέρα τόν ἅγιον ἐκ τῶν ἐπαίνων κἄν ὅλως;
And what, moreover, should I gain for myself, or for my holy father, from these praises at all?
1:979
But just as, having spoken above concerning the rest of the saints, I profited them nothing by my words, yet stirred up my hearers to zeal and urged them on to the imitation of those saints, so also concerning the holy Symeon I will not cease from speaking; and, necessity being laid upon me, though unwilling, I speak also concerning our unworthy selves.
1:980
—truly the love of God for man, that by it the sloth and slackness of those who say such things may be reproved.
1:981
Our blessed and holy father Symeon labored so greatly that he surpassed many of the holy fathers of old, and he endured such afflictions and trials that he was made equal to many of the most illustrious among the martyrs.
1:982
因此他被神得著榮耀,成為無情慾且聖潔的人,可以說在自己裡面領受了那位保惠師的全部;
For this reason, then, he was glorified by God and became free of passion and holy, having received within himself, so to speak, the whole of the Paraclete;
1:983
and then, just as a father gives an inheritance as a portion to his son, so also he filled me, his unworthy servant, effortlessly and freely with the Holy Spirit.
1:984
Ποῖος γάρ, εἰπέ μοι, ἐξ ὑμῶν, μή ὅτι γε εἴπω διεπράξατο, ἀλλ ἔτι τά παρ ἐκείνου πραχθέντα καί ὡς δυνατόν ῥηθέντα, νοῆσαι καλῶς δύναται;
For tell me, which of you—I will not say has accomplished what he did—but is even able rightly to understand the things done by him and, as far as possible, said by him?
1:985
For first of all he wrote this, speaking thus as in the manner of instruction:
1:986
Brother, consider this to be called perfect withdrawal from the world: the complete mortification of one's own will.
1:987
O blessed voice—or rather, blessed soul that has been counted worthy to become such and to be separated from the whole world!
1:988
You are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world.
1:989
Come to me, and I will give you rest.
1:990
For those who walk in some other way, according to their own wills—even if in any manner or in certain things they appear to walk in what is good—shall by no means behold that life which those behold who have been cut off from the world and have died to their own will.
1:991
Εἰ οὖν σύ ταπεινωθῆναι καί ὑποταγῆναι, θλιβῆναί τε καί ἀτιμασθῆναι, ἐξουδενωθῆναι καί λοιδορηθῆναι καί ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀφανῶν καί ἀφρόνων καί εὐτελῶν καί παραπεσόντων, ἀδελφέ, οὐ καταδέχῃ γενέσθαι, ἀλλ οὐδέ καταφρονηθῆναι παρά παντός ἀνθρώπου καί ὡς εἷς τῶν ἐπιλήπτων καί προσαιτούντων εἰς τάς πλατείας καί ῥύμας τῆς πόλεως λογισθῆναι, πῶς, εἰπέ, γένῃ ξένος τοῦ ἰδίου θελήματος;
If, then, you, brother, will not accept to be humbled and made subject, to be afflicted and dishonored, to be counted as nothing and reviled, and to be reckoned as one of the obscure and foolish and worthless and fallen; nor even to be despised by every man and reckoned as one of the epileptics and beggars in the streets and lanes of the city—tell me, how will you become a stranger to your own will?
1:992
Εἰ γάρ ταῦτα πρός δοκιμήν καί πεῖραν ἐπερχόμενα φέρειν ἐν ὑπομονῇ πᾶσιν ἡμῖν Θεός ἐνετείλατο, μᾶλλον δέ οὐ πρός δοκιμήν καί πεῖραν, ἀλλά πρός () κάθαρσιν τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν ἐπαγόμενα, ἡμεῖς ὑπομεῖναι ταῦτα οὐ θέλομεν, ἀλλά ζῇ ἐν ἡμῖν τό μή θέλειν ταῦτα παθεῖν, ὅπερ ἐστί τό γεῶδες φρόνημα τῆς σαρκός, πῶς νεκροί γενησόμεθα;
For if God has commanded us all to bear with patience these things when they come upon us for testing and trial—or rather, not for testing and trial, but as things brought upon us for the purification of our souls—and yet we are unwilling to endure them, but there lives in us the unwillingness to suffer these things, which is the earthly mind of the flesh, how shall we become dead?
1:993
Εἰ δέ μή νεκροί τῷ κόσμῳ καί τοῖς ἐν κόσμῳ γενοίμεθα, πῶς οἱ μή γεγονότες διά Θεόν νεκροί ζήσομεν τήν ἐν Χριστῷ κεκρυμμένην ζωήν;
And if we do not become dead to the world and to the things in the world, how shall we, who have not become dead for God's sake, live that life which is hidden in Christ?
1:994
Πῶς, ὡς ἅγιος εἶπε Συμεών, θεασόμεθα τόν Θεόν ἐνοικήσαντα ὡς φῶς ἐν ἡμῖν;
How, as the holy Symeon said, shall we behold God dwelling within us as light?
1:995
By no means, brothers; let no one deceive you.
1:996
Ἀλλά μωρόν ἡγῇ τόν μακάριον Συμεών καί αἰσχύνῃ μιμήσασθαι τάς πράξεις αὐτοῦ;
But do you consider the blessed Symeon a fool, and are you ashamed to imitate his deeds?
1:997
Suffer, then, you also for the sake of your own salvation, as he suffered for your sake.
1:998
For they called him, as you hear, a madman, a deceiver, a glutton and a winebibber.
1:999
Behold, a man gluttonous and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
1:1000
And these very things our blessed father, the holy Symeon, heard on our behalf—or rather, for our sake.
1:1001
Together with these you hear again how the Lord, like a murderer and a criminal, was dragged along bound, and was set before Pilate as one of the worthless, receiving a blow from a servant, cast into prison and led out of prison, brought forth by soldiers and lictors, delivered by Pilate to the people, who said, 'Take him yourselves and crucify him.'
1:1002
Behold the King of the Jews, again putting on his own garments, his neck bound with a rope and led away to death; then thus loaded with his own cross and coming to the place, and watching it being fixed upright, and left alone by his friends and disciples; after this, again stripped, hung up, his hands and feet nailed by the soldiers and left to hang, given gall to drink, pierced with a lance, blasphemed by a robber, mocked, and hearing:
1:1003
'You who destroy the temple and raise it in three days, save yourself and come down from the cross'; and again:
1:1004
'If he is the Son of God, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him'; and so, after suffering all these things, giving thanks and praying for those who had slain him, and committing his soul into the hands of his Father.
1:1005
() Οὐκ ἀρκοῦσι ταῦτά σοι πάντα εἰς μίμησιν, ἀδελφέ, ἀλλ αἰσχύνῃ οὕτω ταῦτα παθεῖν;
Do not all these things suffice you for imitation, brother? Or are you ashamed to suffer these things thus?
1:1006
Διά ποίων δέ ἄλλων ἔργωνἤ πῶς συνδοξασθήσῃ αὐτῷ;
By what other works, or how, will you be glorified together with him?
1:1007
For whoever, he says, is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will I also be ashamed before my Father who is in heaven.
1:1008
但我們若以效法他為我們所忍受的苦難為恥,不肯像他那樣受苦,那就顯然我們也不能成為他榮耀的同分者;
But if we are ashamed to imitate his sufferings, which he endured for our sake, and to suffer as he suffered, it is quite clear that neither shall we become partakers of his glory;
1:1009
因為我們既是如此存心,就不過是口頭上、而非行為上的信徒;
for we are believers not in deed but in word alone, being disposed in this way;
1:1010
and since works are lacking, our faith is dead.
1:1011
For this reason, therefore, I say, and saying it I will not cease, that those who do not imitate the sufferings of Christ through repentance and obedience, and have not become partakers of his death—as we have shown in detail above—shall neither become partakers of his spiritual resurrection nor receive the Holy Spirit.
1:1012
因為眾人的復活是藉著聖靈成就的;
For through the Holy Spirit the resurrection of all comes to pass;
1:1013
and I do not mean the resurrection of bodies at the consummation—for then the angel will sound the trumpet and the dead bodies will rise—but rather that spiritual regeneration and resurrection of dead souls which takes place daily in a spiritual manner, which he who died once and was raised, and who rises through all and in all who live worthily, and who raises together the souls that have died with him by their purpose and faith, grants through his all-holy Spirit, bestowing upon them already from now the kingdom of heaven—which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all glory unto the ages of ages.
1:1014
Concerning attachment to relatives,
1:1015
and what its deception is, and into what sort of pit and bondage it brings down those who are held captive by it.
1:1016
And concerning despair, and the distinction within it.
1:1017
…love, or at all to point out to others the ways of salvation—not as though the matter were contrary to the commandment of God, but rather as being well-pleasing to him; yet nevertheless, since I myself am unworthy of such a spiritual undertaking, I therefore fear, lowly one that I am, lest that saying of David be most fittingly spoken concerning me also:
1:1018
But to the sinner God said:
1:1019
But let us see, if it seems good, who it is that hates instruction, and who it is that casts his words behind him.
1:1020
He who does not obey the laws of God hates the instruction that comes from the words of the Lord, and stops up his ears so as not to hear the word of the final requital of sinners, or of that eternal fire, and of the torments of Hades, and of that eternal condemnation, from which there is no escape for one who has once fallen into its punishments.
1:1021
But he who does not with all the strength and power of his soul keep the commandments of God always before his eyes and guard them, but rather despises them and prefers the things contrary to them and does them—he is the one who casts the words behind him.
1:1022
And that I may make the subject of my discourse clear to you by a single example: when God commands and cries out plainly:
1:1023
'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,' and again:
1:1024
'Strive to enter through the narrow gate'—but he who hears these things not only does not choose to repent and to force himself to enter through the narrow gate, but passing all the days of his life in distraction and dissipation of soul, adding evils upon his own evils hour by hour, and seeking ease of body and comfort beyond what necessity requires (which is rather a sign of the broad and spacious way, and not of the narrow and afflicted way that leads to eternal life)—such a one, therefore, likewise casts the words of God behind him, and does his own wills, or rather the wills of the devil.
1:1025
These things I myself, wretched one, first of all fulfilling, and lying in a pit of mire, and being in awareness of my own evils, cry out from below, calling aloud and addressing all who pass by outside:
1:1026
'Keep far away from this most dreadful pit, brothers, and walk the straight way, which is Christ!'
1:1027
And let no one turn aside to the right or to the left and fall in here together with me, the utterly wretched and ill-fated one, and be deprived, along with the earthly things, of the heavenly good things as well.
1:1028
But since through his many devices the all-wicked devil, the enemy of our souls, casts the greater part—or almost all together, as if gathering them in—into such a pit at various times, and does so also through this one thing, I mean attachment to relatives, using it as a rope, the enemy binds it fast about the neck of each one and leads and drags around together all who have accepted such a bond, into fearful precipices and grievous, unpardonable pits of sins, and plunges them down into that very pit of despair, and having brought them down to the bottom of Hades and bound them there, he leaves them—let us flee, beloved, this destruction, I beseech you.
1:1029
For cunningly he roots himself in such people, and craftily produces despair in them to such a degree that they neither think themselves to be in despair, nor are persuaded by the divine Scriptures, nor indeed consider trustworthy those who speak to them concerning such matters, but set everything as secondary to their own prudence—or rather, one should say, to their own folly and insensibility—and, though bound by the neck, they remain unfeeling, which is worse than any despair.
1:1030
…that one who has fallen into a multitude of evils despairs of his own salvation, and the other, that he uses the evil as though it were good and is in full assurance that he is doing something good.
1:1031
For the former, if he is taught concerning repentance and the loving-kindness of God, and learns that there is no multitude of sins which repentance does not blot out, and that where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, and that there is joy rather in heaven over one sinner who repents—then perhaps, coming to himself and being pricked in conscience, he may sometime desire to be delivered from those many evils and to have his conscience lightened of its burden hard to bear; he will rouse himself, and will count all other things—the affairs of this life, I mean—as nothing, and will come fervently to repentance.
1:1032
But the latter, being more difficult to recall, utterly refuses to be healed by such remedies.
1:1033
Πῶς γάρ καί ἰατρευθῆναι καταδέξεται, μηδέ ὅτι ἐν νόσῳἤ πτώματι κεῖται ὅλως πειθόμενος;
For how will he accept to be healed, who is not even persuaded at all that he lies in sickness or in a fall?
1:1034
但我們理當先——盡我們所能——從神聖的福音以及其餘的聖言中採集屬靈的話語,使他們得著充分的確信,並向他們指明:他們如何從正直的路起頭,卻偏離而受了迷惑;仇敵又如何趁他們孤立無援,狡詐地把眷戀的繩索繫在他們自己的頸項上;然後又如何把他們牽引進罪惡的懸崖與深坑;
But it is fitting that we first—as far as we are able—having gathered spiritual words from the divine Gospel and the rest of the holy Scriptures, give them full assurance and show them how, having set out from the straight way, they turned aside and were deceived; how the enemy, finding them isolated, deceitfully bound the rope of attachment about their own necks; and then also how he led them around into precipices and pits of sins;
1:1035
and after these things we will show them also how he cast them into the deepest pit, and where and how, having brought them down into Hades, he fastened the rope about their neck, and, as of those no longer able to be freed and to come up to the earth, he abandoned them and withdrew.
1:1036
And thus, to those who are persuaded by the words of the divine Scripture and come to an awareness of their own evils, and who confess and agree that their state is such—then indeed we will apply, through their own words, the remedies suited to their wounds.
1:1037
But as I am about to come to the demonstrations of these matters, and to take up the contest of discourse—I who am pressed on, being without eloquence and unlearned—I beg you all to pray together with me, that the grace of the all-holy Spirit, shining forth more brightly, may illumine my whole understanding and mind, and may grant me to say something worthily—not because of my own worthiness, but for your benefit—sounding, as it were, the words within it, and at the same time shining with its own light and pointing out all the things we have foretold, and saying to us, as it were:
1:1038
'Behold the way; behold its falling away; behold the enemy, the rope.'
1:1039
'Behold the brother, how he accepts the bond with joy.'
1:1040
'Behold where the devil, dragging him, carries him off'—and having pointed out all things in order without omission, and having taught how we may be able to escape his snares, may she take us up as free ones and ascend with us to the heavens.
1:1041
But this cannot become possible for us in any other way, unless we lead our discourse back from the beginning and from the very start of our life and of our entrance into the monastic course, and make our beginning from there.
1:1042
For thus also the discourse, as though walking along a road, may clearly demonstrate to those who give heed the things it has promised, through the grace of the Spirit.
1:1043
But do not grow weary, for the discourse is profitable inasmuch as it is also God-inspired, since both we and our words, according to the wise man who said it, and our very breath, are in the hand of God who made us.
1:1044
…willing to deliver us from the bondage and the most shameful deception, he came down from there without at all leaving the bosom of the Father—as he himself knows how—and having come to be upon the earth, and walked about and lived among us who are sinful men, and having given commandments of salvation to his holy disciples and apostles, he ascended again to his own Father with glory, having charged them and said:
1:1045
'Go, preach the gospel to every creature, teaching all men'—not to keep this or that, but 'all things whatsoever I have commanded you.'
1:1046
And having said 'all things,' he left out nothing that he did not command to be kept.
1:1047
Now then, beloved brothers, have you understood what this is that he says:
1:1048
ἀπιστήσας, καί περί τούτου εἴπω πρός τήν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην;
'He that disbelieved'—or shall I speak concerning this also to your love?
1:1049
For what is said seems easy to grasp and simple, but it has meanings hidden in its depth.
1:1050
By 'faith' here he does not mean only this—that Christ is God—but that most comprehensive faith concerning all the holy commandments spoken by him, the faith which in some way holds together within itself all his divine commandments, and which believes that there is nothing idle in them, down to a single stroke, but that all of them, to one iota, are life and the procurers of eternal life.
1:1051
For he who believes that they are so, and who through holy baptism has covenanted to keep all these things and to do them without omission, shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved even in a single one of His words—down to one jot or, as it is said, one tittle—shall be condemned as having denied that whole One Himself.
1:1052
γάρ εἰς τά μεγάλα πιστεύσας αὐτῷ οἷον ὅτι Θεός ὤν ἀτρέπτως ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος, ὅτι ἐσταυρώθη καί ἀπέθανε καί ἀνέστη, ὅτι ἀναστάς τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων εἰσῆλθε καί ὤφθη τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς, ὅτι ἀνελήφθη καί κάθηται ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Θεοῦ καί Πατρός, ὅτι μέλλει ἔρχεσθαι κρῖναι ζῶντας καί νεκρούς καί ἀποδοῦναι ἑκάστῳ κατά τά ἔργα αὐτοῦ πρότερον δηλονότι ἐξαναστήσας πάντας ἡμᾶς, τούς ἀπό Ἀδάμ καί μέχρι τῆς ἐσχάτης ἡμέρας τεχθήσεσθαι μέλλοντας , λέγοντι δέ αὐτῷ Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅτι καί ὑπέρ ἀργοῦ λόγου λόγον δώσουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἀπιστῶν, πῶς ἄρα πιστός ἔσται καί μετά πιστῶν συγκαταριθμηθῇ;
For he who has believed Him in the great matters—namely, that being God He became man without change; that He was crucified, died, and rose again; that after rising He entered while the doors were shut and appeared to His own disciples; that He was taken up and sits at the right hand of God and the Father; that He is to come to judge the living and the dead and to render to each according to his works, having first, that is, raised us all up, both those from Adam and those yet to be born until the last day—yet disbelieves Him when He says, 'Amen I say to you, that men shall give account even for an idle word in the day of judgment,' how then shall he be a believer and be numbered with the faithful?
1:1053
He, then, who believes in those awesome things which surpass the mind and every human understanding, in what has come to pass and in what is yet to come from our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, having his soul obedient and consenting to Him—yet himself disbelieves at the moment he hears Him saying:
1:1054
'Whoever wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me'; and:
1:1055
φιλῶν πατέραἤ μετέρα ὑπέρ ἐμέ οὐκ ἔστι μου ἄξιος καί ὅτιὉ ἐρχόμενος πρός με καί οὐ μισεῖ τόν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καί τήν μετέρα καί τούς ἀδελφούς καί τάς ἀδελφάς καί τήν γυναῖκα καί τά τέκνα, ἔτι δέ καί τήν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, οὐ δύναταί μου εἶναι μαθητής καί ὅτιὉ λύσας μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν, πῶς τοιοῦτος πιστός καί οὐχί μᾶλλον ὡς ἄπιστοςἤ καί χείρων ἀπίστου κατακριθήσεται;
'He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me,' and that, 'He who comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, and brothers and sisters, and wife and children, and moreover even his own soul, cannot be My disciple,' and that, 'He who breaks one of these least commandments shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven'—how shall such a one be a believer, and not rather be condemned as an unbeliever, or even worse than an unbeliever?
1:1056
For in the greater matters he confesses that he believes in Christ, but in the least matters he despises Him—the very God and Master of all—as though He were lying.
1:1057
And while saying that in other things he believes Him as God, he disbelieves Him as though He were some chance man, when He says that men shall give account even for an idle word in the day of judgment.
1:1058
And he thinks to be saved while laughing and speaking shameful and idle words, though He calls wretched those who laugh and blesses those who mourn.
1:1059
But even while not denying himself nor bearing his cross, he supposes that he is following Christ who was crucified for his sake.
1:1060
...his own parents, he holds from his soul that he is worthy of Christ.
1:1061
So then in this way even those who supposedly come to Him through renunciation, yet do not hate all their own kinsfolk, and moreover do not deny their own soul, but on the contrary even love them the more—these too vainly suppose themselves to be disciples of Christ.
1:1062
And while at every hour they break not one, the least of the commandments, but many and great ones, they suppose they are doing nothing at all contrary; rather they even imagine that, being such, they shall be great in the kingdom of God.
1:1063
And—the greatest of all evils—they not only say that these are no transgression of a commandment at all, but even foolishly attempt to persuade us ourselves, who lay claim to the word of truth.
1:1064
But let us return to the matter before us.
1:1065
All things, then, whatsoever Christ and God commanded the apostles, He likewise ordained that we also keep—things which indeed we can keep in the world, but do not choose to, because we are weak in faith and in love toward Christ.
1:1066
And that this is true, they all bear witness—those before the Law, and under the Law, and after the coming of the Savior—who, together with children and wives and amid all the cares and anxieties of daily life, pleased the Lord, having become separated from all these things by a disposition free of attachment, and having shone forth more brilliantly in faith and life than those who dwell in mountains and caves.
