1:2303
捷足的不能逃跑,勇士也不能向北方脫身;
Let not the swift flee, and let not the mighty escape to the north;
1:2304
toward the Euphrates they grew weak and have fallen.
1:2305
Then He reminds them of their former prosperity:
1:2306
Who is this that comes up as a river, and as rivers his waters surge—Egypt that comes up like a river, and like a river stirs up her waters?
1:2307
And He displays her boastful words as well.
1:2308
And she said, 'I will go up, and I will cover the earth, and I will destroy the city and those who dwell in it.' And, teaching that events do not correspond to the fancy of their reasonings, He says ironically:
1:2309
Mount upon the horses, make ready the chariots, go forth, you warriors.
1:2310
By 'the warriors' He means the Egyptians' mercenary auxiliaries.
1:2311
'Ethiopians and Libyans armed with weapons, and you Lydians, come up, draw the bow.' Then he teaches that, at the nod of God, the boldness of the Egyptians is dissolved.
1:2312
'And that day shall be to the Lord our God a day of vengeance, to take vengeance on His enemies;'
1:2313
'and My sword shall devour flesh, and shall be filled, and made drunk with their blood.'
1:2314
'For it is a sacrifice to the Lord of Sabaoth from the land of the north, upon the river Euphrates.' Since the Egyptians paid the penalty for their impiety and were destroyed at God's will, for this reason He has called that slaughter of theirs a sacrifice.
1:2315
'Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt.'
1:2316
And the brothers of Joseph carried off balm and stacte down into Egypt.
1:2317
乳香乃是樹木的汁液,很適合用作藥物;
Now balm is the sap of trees, well suited for medicines;
1:2318
and Gilead in particular cultivates it.
1:2319
He has said these things by way of irony, showing the incurable nature of the calamity.
1:2320
For what follows also makes this plain.
1:2321
'In vain you have multiplied your remedies;'
1:2322
'there is no healing for you.' And, showing the magnitude of the blow, he added:
1:2323
'The nations have heard your voice, and the earth has been filled with your cry, for warrior has grown weak against warrior;'
1:2324
'both have fallen together.'
1:2325
Through these words he has foretold also the coming overthrow of the victors.
1:2326
These things, then, the prophet prophesied concerning the former defeat.
1:2327
But in what follows he foretells the campaign of Nebuchadnezzar against Egypt, and enjoins that the prediction be announced to Migdol, and to Memphis, and to Tahpanhes, and indeed to the whole kingdom of the Egyptians; and he says:
1:2328
「站起來,預備你自己,因為刀已吞吃了你的旋花草。」敘利亞譯本把「旋花草」譯作「你四圍的一切」;
'Stand and prepare yourself, for the sword has devoured your bindweed.' The Syrian rendered 'the bindweed' as 'the things round about you;'
1:2329
而這旋花草所暗示的也正是同一件事;
and this same thing the bindweed too hints at;
1:2330
so figuratively he named in this way the allies of the Egyptians, whose defeat and flight he foretold.
1:2331
他所說的「精選的牛犢」是指阿庇斯;
By 'the choice calf' he means Apis;
1:2332
因為這是一頭公牛,由他們飼養並敬拜;
for this was an ox, reared and worshipped by them;
1:2333
所以先知之言教導了敗績的緣由;
so the prophetic word teaches the cause of the defeat;
1:2334
for making a calf into a god, and putting their confidence in it, they obtained no help.
1:2335
'Because the Lord has weakened him.' That is, the calf.
1:2336
And He also weakened the one working in it, and deceiving men.
1:2337
'And your multitude has grown weak and fallen.'
1:2338
He speaks also of the cowardice that fell upon them, and how they urged one another to flight, fearing the enemies and their allies.
1:2339
他說:「我們起來,回到我們的百姓那裡,回到我們的故鄉,躲避希臘人的刀劍吧。」有些希臘人很可能也與巴比倫王一同出征;
'For let us arise,' he says, 'and return to our people, and to our fatherland, from before the Greek sword.' It is likely that some of the Greeks also fought together with the king of the Babylonians;
1:2340
但我認為,在這裡他也預告了馬其頓人的統治;
but I think that in this passage he also foretells the dominion of the Macedonians;
1:2341
for Alexander, having overthrown the kingdom of the Egyptians, forced them to be subject to the Macedonians.
1:2342
'Call the name of Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt Saon Esebeir Emoed.'
1:2343
But the Syrian rendered these things thus:
1:2344
'Call his name: he who troubles, and who overturns seasons;' for of old the kingdom of the Egyptians was mighty, and it kept troubling the neighbouring nations, and turned the prosperity of many into adversity.
1:2345
'As I live, says the Lord God, whose name is the King of hosts.'
1:2346
And His eternity and His power He taught us at one and the same time.
1:2347
「因為正如他泊在眾山之中,又如迦密臨近海邊,他也必這樣來到。」這無異於說:你不要懷疑;
'For as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel is by the sea, so shall he come.' This is as much as to say: Do not doubt;
1:2348
for just as all men indisputably agree both that Tabor is a mountain and that Carmel borders on the sea,
1:2349
so the prediction possesses its truth.
1:2350
'Make yourself vessels of removal, O dweller, daughter of Egypt;'
1:2351
就是說:預備好被擄去吧;
that is, get ready for captivity;
1:2352
他也述說那作京都之城的荒涼;
and he speaks also of the desolation of the royal city;
1:2353
因為挪弗在那時已成了王都之城;
for Memphis at that time had become a royal city;
1:2354
and this the divine Isaiah taught us.
1:2355
'For the princes of Tanis have failed,' he says, 'and the princes of Memphis have been exalted.'
1:2356
他藉這些話把她那難以馴服、未曾負軛、驕奢淫逸的性情顯明了;
Her untamable, unyoked, and luxurious character he has made plain through these words;
1:2357
and, exposing their great weakness, he teaches that even when very few enemies came upon them, they were unable to hold out.
1:2358
'A dividing came from the north upon her.' [verse] 21
1:2359
'And her hired men are in her midst, like calves.'
1:2360
他把那些援兵的軟弱顯明了;
He has made plain the weakness of the allies;
1:2361
因為肥養的牛犢不耕地,反被別人吃掉;
for the fatted calf does not till the earth, but is eaten by others;
1:2362
and he speaks also of their flight.
1:2363
'For they turned back,' he says, 'and fled with one accord;'
1:2364
'they did not stand.' He adds also the cause:
1:2365
'Because the day of destruction has come upon them, and the time of their vengeance.' For it was necessary that they should pay the penalty of their impiety.
1:2366
'Their voice is like that of a hissing serpent.'
1:2367
It is characteristic of those in distress to groan and hiss, and, being heated by despondency, to give forth breath.
1:2368
「因為他們必在沙土中行進。」他藉這些話把他們的朽壞顯明了;
'For they shall march in sand.' Their rottenness he has made plain through these words;
1:2369
for indeed the Lord likened the one who hears His word and does not do it to a foolish man who built his house upon the sand.
1:2370
'With axes they shall come upon her, like those who cut wood.' Then, in the imperative mood:
1:2371
'Cut down her forest, says the Lord God, for God will by no means be propitiated, because it multiplies beyond the locust.'
1:2372
'The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame, she has been delivered into the hands of a people from the north, says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel.'
1:2373
The prophet uttered his prophecy to those who had gone down into Egypt, at the time when he also hid the stones in the entrances of the royal palace. [verse] 25
1:2374
'Behold, I take vengeance on Ammon her son.'
1:2375
那地也因他而被稱為亞捫之地;
from whom also the land was named Ammoniac;
1:2376
to him they built a very great sacred precinct.
1:2377
他稱亞捫為她的兒子,因為亞捫是被她奉為神的;
And he calls Ammon her son, as one deified by her;
1:2378
for the idol was made by hands.
1:2379
He therefore threatens that He will deliver up Ammon the idol to the Babylonians, and indeed their other gods as well:
1:2380
'And upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt, and upon her gods, and upon her kings;'
1:2381
And against Pharaoh and against those who trusted in him. All at once, he says, the enemies shall prevail over them all together: over the king, over the rulers, over the idols, and over the auxiliaries.
1:2382
Yet after she has been handed over to the king of the Babylonians, she shall recover her former dominion.
1:2383
For after these things, he says, she shall be at rest as in the days of old, says the Lord.
1:2384
After this he foretells to Israel also things that will bring gladness, and prophesies the return from Babylon.
1:2385
He also announces beforehand the destruction of the Babylonians.
1:2386
For you too, he says, do not fear, my servant Jacob, says the Lord, for I am with you.
1:2387
For I will make a full end of every nation into which I have driven you there.
1:2388
But you I will by no means make to fail; I will chasten you with judgment, and I will by no means hold you guiltless.
1:2389
I will bring upon you a healing discipline.
1:2390
For this is what he means by 'I will chasten you with judgment, and I will not leave you unpunished.' For this is what is signified by 'And I will by no means hold you guiltless.'
1:2391
From here he transfers the prophecy to the foreigners (Philistines).
1:2392
By 'foreigners' he means those who dwell in Ashkelon, Gaza, Azotus, Gath, and Ekron.
1:2393
He says that the prediction was made before Pharaoh struck Gaza, and he likens the army of the Babylonians to a torrent overflowing.
1:2394
By this the cities are flooded over, and the inhabitants destroyed, uttering a wailing cry, and unable to endure even the din of the weapons and the chariots.
1:2395
He teaches that, because of their terror, fathers even forgot nature itself and neglected their sons.
1:2396
For fathers, he says, did not turn back to their sons, because of the feebleness of their hands.
1:2397
In the day that is coming, to destroy all the foreigners.
1:2398
He also foretells destruction to the Tyrians and Sidonians, as having come to the aid of these.
1:2399
For I will lay waste, he says, Tyre and Sidon and the remnant of their help.
1:2400
For the Lord will utterly destroy the foreigners, the remnant of the islands and of Cappadocia. And when we interpreted the other prophets, we showed that colonists from the Cypriots and the Cappadocians of old inhabited Palestine.
1:2401
That is: you shall be stripped of your ancient renown.
1:2402
And it often signifies mourning as well.
1:2403
For shave your head, he says, and take up a lamentation upon your lips.
1:2404
Ashkelon is cast off, and the remnant of the Anakim. And the descendants of that man inhabited Ashkelon.
1:2405
How long will you gather yourselves together? (v. 6) How long will the sword of the Lord cut? He called Nebuchadnezzar 'the sword of the Lord.'
1:2406
For with His permission he wrought those things, and by one another's hand the impious paid the penalty for their impiety.
1:2407
Return to your sheath.
1:2408
Rest and be lifted up. And showing who it was that commanded it to act, he added:
1:2409
And the Lord gave it a charge to go against Ashkelon, and against the regions by the sea, and against the remnant.
1:2410
He has employed personification, teaching more clearly that the creation is not without a pilot, but that its Maker presides over all things, and at one time supplies them with an abundance of good things, and at another permits them to fall into calamities.
1:2411
And the prophet transfers the prediction to Moab.
1:2412
Concerning Moab thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:
1:2413
Woe to Nebo, for it is destroyed.
1:2414
This was an idol, and Isaiah the prophet also mentions it.
1:2415
Bel is fallen, Nebo is broken; and there is also a city named after the idol.
1:2416
Masigath was put to shame and was defeated.
1:2417
( βʹ.)
(v. 2) There is no longer any healing for Moab, no boasting in Heshbon.
1:2418
These were splendid cities, in which the Moabites took great pride.
1:2419
They devised evils against her.
1:2420
Behind you the sword shall march. And this signifies the pursuers.
1:2421
For there is a voice of men crying out from Horonaim.
1:2422
He says that Zoar too will receive the grievous tidings, and that the other cities will be filled with wailing.
1:2423
He urges them to flee, and to pass their lives in the wilderness like the wild asses.
1:2424
Since you trusted in your stronghold, afflictions shall come upon you.
1:2425
And not only shall you be taken captive by the enemies, but Chemosh also shall go forth into exile.
1:2426
And this was an idol of the Moabites.
1:2427
Its priests and its rulers together.
1:2428
(ηʹ.)
(v. 8) And destruction shall come upon every city.
1:2429
He says that the valley and the plain shall suffer the same calamity.
1:2430
He also foretells the utter desolation caused by the enemies.
1:2431
In the deserts and utterly untrodden places, men set up certain signs made of stones, and thus make their journey, and looking to those they travel without going astray.
1:2432
For it shall be kindled with fire. That is, it shall be burned up.
1:2433
And its cities shall become untrodden. Because there is no one dwelling in it.
1:2434
Cursed is he who does the works of God carelessly, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood.
1:2435
But if the prophetic word subjects to curses those who slay carelessly where God commands, what penalties shall we pay who are negligent in the spiritual labor?
1:2436
Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has trusted in his glory, and he has not been poured from vessel to vessel.
1:2437
That is, he did not change his dwelling, nor did he become a migrant.
1:2438
他也未曾被擄去;
And he did not go into captivity;
1:2439
therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent did not depart. He continued in the figure, and since he had mentioned a vessel, necessarily also taste and scent.
1:2440
as one who has always tarried in the same places. (v. 12)
1:2441
and I will send to him men who tilt, and they shall tilt him, and shall thin out his vessels, and shall break his horns in pieces.
1:2442
These things too he has set down parabolically and figuratively.
1:2443
καὶ.
因為他說「他們要傾倒」是就器皿而言,意思是「他們要倒空」;
For he said 'they shall tilt' as concerning a vessel, meaning 'they shall empty out';
1:2444
and it shall not suffice them to take what is in the vessels, but they shall break these in pieces as well.
1:2445
他所稱的「器皿」是指那些城邑,器皿中所盛的則是指財富;
By 'vessels' he calls the cities, and by the contents of the vessels the wealth;
1:2446
and the enemies did both, for they both plundered and set on fire.
1:2447
And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their hope.
1:2448
耶羅波安在伯特利設立了牛犢;
In Bethel Jeroboam set up the calf;
1:2449
the prophetic word therefore teaches that, just as Israel obtained no help from the idols, so too Moab profited nothing from Chemosh.
1:2450
Then he shows them boasting proudly in their strength, yet undergoing destruction, since the God of all things had ordained this.
1:2451
Having declared that the time of the punishment had come, he exhorts the neighboring peoples to rouse him up to manful courage and to restore him to his former strength.
1:2452
And he charges them to say:
1:2453
and the pride that exceeds your strength.
1:2454
He also enumerates the cities which of old were splendid and renowned, and he teaches the reversal of their prosperity.
1:2455
And he shows the cause as well.
1:2456
'For make him drunk,' he says, 'because he magnified himself against the Lord.'
1:2457
For when the Moabites learned of what had befallen the Jews, they jeered, charging the God of all with weakness.
1:2458
For this is what the following words also teach.
1:2459
'Moab shall clap with his hand'—that is, dancing and rejoicing over another's misfortune.
1:2460
'And he too shall become a laughingstock.' Then more plainly:
1:2461
'And was not Israel a derision to you?'
1:2462
'And was he found among your thefts, that you made war upon him?' What wrong, he says, had he done you, that you warred against him? Did you catch them breaking through walls or stripping garments off men? 'You shall be removed for him'—that is, on account of the injustice done to him.
1:2463
He also speaks of their flight.
1:2464
'The inhabitants of Moab left the cities and dwelt in the rocks; they became like doves nesting in the rocks, at the mouth of a pit.'
1:2465
For they took to the caves in the mountain-tops, being unable to withstand the assault of the enemy.
1:2466
He also calls him insolent, and a braggart, and proud.
1:2467
'And of these things,' he says, 'I myself was an eyewitness.' And teaching how the experience of the deeds refuted the pomp of the words, he added:
1:2468
'Are not his arms according to his sufficiency thus? Has he not done thus?'
1:2469
For before the battle, boasting and threatening to prove himself a champion, when he saw the enemy he fled.
1:2470
As for the phrase 'shorn of drought,' the Syrian rendered it thus:
1:2471
'Their heads shorn, and their beards shaven.' This is the appearance of captives.
1:2472
The prophetic word concerning Moab also makes this plain:
1:2473
'Wail for the men of the wall, shorn of drought.'
1:2474
That is, those who of old possessed walls and ramparts, but now are shorn of their former prosperity and clothed with squalor.
1:2475
'As the weeping of Jazer I shall weep for you.'
1:2476
He recalled a certain history, and thereby indicated the exceeding greatness of the lament.
1:2477
'O vine of Sibmah, your branches passed over the sea.' It was rich in wine and abundant in wine.
1:2478
He therefore likens the multitude of the vine to the sea.
1:2479
And he says that its land was laid waste and the vine destroyed.
1:2480
'There was wine,' he says, 'in your winepresses;'
1:2481
'in the morning they did not tread, nor in the evening did they make it.'
1:2482
The Syrian rendered this thus:
1:2483
'No longer treading the winepress and crying, Hurrah, hurrah.' And having said the same things in different ways, he interpreted the phrase 'shorn of drought.' (verses 37, 38)
1:2484
'Every head in every place shall be shaven, and every beard shall be shaven;'
1:2485
'and all hands shall be cut, and upon every loin sackcloth.'
1:2486
'And upon all the housetops of Moab, and in its broad places, lamentation.'
1:2487
'For I have broken Moab like a vessel for which there is no use, says the Lord.' He showed his utter uselessness.
1:2488
He also clearly shows the swiftness of Nebuchadnezzar.
1:2489
'Behold, like an eagle he shall swoop, and shall spread out his wings over Moab.'
1:2490
受神感的以西結也將尼布甲尼撒比作鷹;
The inspired Ezekiel also likens Nebuchadnezzar to an eagle;
1:2491
for the creature is kingly, and the swiftest and most powerful of all winged things.
1:2492
他也預言摩押的膽怯,將他的心比作臨產婦人的心;
He foretells also the cowardice of Moab, and likens his heart to the heart of a woman in travail;
1:2493
and he teaches his impiety as well.
1:2494
'Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he magnified himself against the Lord.'
1:2495
He foretells also the successive calamities.
1:2496
'Fear and the pit and the snare are upon you who dwell in Moab, says the Lord.'
1:2497
'He who flees from the face of the fear shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs up out of the pit shall be caught in the snare.'
1:2498
「因為到我追討摩押的那年,我必使這些事臨到她,這是耶和華說的。」他把那定期稱為「年」;
'For I will bring these things upon Moab, in the year in which I will visit her, says the Lord.' He calls the appointed time a year;
1:2499
'when,' he says, 'I purpose to punish them, I will envelop them in these calamities.'
1:2500
He also prophesies to them their civil war.
1:2501
'A fire went forth from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, and devoured the chief men of Moab.'
1:2502
But he also foretells to them something agreeable.
1:2503
'And I will restore the captivity of Moab in the latter days, says the Lord.'
1:2504
He showed, both through the punishment and through his loving-kindness, that he himself is Lord of all, rich toward all who call upon him, and that he is God not of the Jews only, but of all mankind.
1:2505
'Thus far the judgment of Moab'—that is, the sentence pronounced against him.
1:2506
The word of prophecy then passes on to the sons of Ammon, and the Lord of all says to them:
1:2507
When these people had thus been taken captive, the Ammonites seized this land.
1:2508
To these God says:
1:2509
'Did you despise the people, or me?' For he called himself the One who would take up their cause, in the sense of the One who would receive and defend them.
1:2510
Milcom was an idol of the sons of Ammon.
1:2511
'Do you suppose,' he says, 'that that which is not can prevail over me who ever am?' (verse 2)
1:2512
拉巴是亞拉伯的一座城;
Rabbah was a city of Arabia;
1:2513
and the phrase 'I will cause to be heard' means 'I will make it to be heard.'
1:2514
'And it shall become a desolation and a ruin;'
1:2515
'and its altars shall be burned with fire, and Israel shall take possession of their dominion, says the Lord.' And he continues, foretelling what shall befall the Ammonites.
1:2516
'Wail, O Heshbon, for your strength is perished;'
1:2517
'cry out, O daughters of Rabbah;'
1:2518
'gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament, and run about upon the walls, for Milcom shall go into exile, and his priests, and his princes together.'
1:2519
他也顯明偶像的軟弱無能;
He showed also the weakness of the idols;
1:2520
for they too went into captivity together with those who worshiped them.
1:2521
Why do you exult in the plains of the Anakim? Your plains have flowed away, O daughter of dishonor.
1:2522
He accuses her of shamelessness, and of the insolence she took in her wealth.
1:2523
For this is what the following words also teach.
1:2524
She who trusted in her treasures, who said, 'Who shall come against me?' And since she gave heed to the things that are seen and knew not the invisible God, he teaches who it is that chastises her.
1:2525
Behold, I bring fear upon you, says the Lord of hosts, from all who dwell round about you.
1:2526
From every side, he says, those who announce to you the army of your enemies shall come running.
1:2527
And you shall be scattered, each one before his own face, and there shall be none to gather up the fugitive.
1:2528
For you shall not flee in one direction together, but by reason of the excess of your terror you shall be dispersed.
1:2529
But he foretells to these also a return, lest the Jews should be high-minded, as though they alone had obtained the return.
1:2530
He foretells the grievous things to Idumaea as well.
1:2531
And since they boasted in their wisdom, he says that they have been deprived of it.
1:2532
There is no more wisdom in Teman; counsel has perished from the prudent. This was a city, and Eliphaz reigned over it.
1:2533
For Eliphaz was king of the Temanites.
1:2534
'I brought upon him in the time when I visited him.'
1:2535
He exhorts them to hide themselves under the earth.
1:2536
For this is the meaning of 'go deep to dwell.' And he teaches that it is he himself who brings the punishment upon them.
1:2537
'Even if in the time that went before,' he says, 'I made use of long-suffering.'
1:2538
Because grape-gatherers have come upon you, and they shall leave you no remnant.
1:2539
He calls the enemies grape-gatherers, whom he says plunder and lay waste everything.
1:2540
He teaches also the time of the assault.
1:2541
As thieves in the night they shall lay their hand upon you. (10)
1:2542
Because I have swept away Esau, I have uncovered their hidden places.
1:2543
Very great and lofty mountains lie about Idumaea.
1:2544
Digging caves therefore in these, they took refuge in them when their foes came upon them.
1:2545
His seed is perished by the hand of his brother and his neighbor. He was ashamed, he says, neither of kinship nor of neighborliness.
1:2546
For Jacob and Esau were brothers, and moreover they were also neighbors bordering one another.
1:2547
For no other people came between to separate them from one another.
1:2548
There is none who has pity, to leave your orphans behind that they may be saved, that I too may preserve them.
1:2549
All men, he says, on account of your great wickedness are disposed with hatred toward you.
1:2550
'And shall I, the righteous judge, become your helper?' 'And let your widows trust in me.' This too he has set down ironically, as the following words make clear.
1:2551
Behold, those for whom it was not appointed to drink the cup have surely drunk it; and shall you, being held guiltless, go unpunished?
1:2552
'It is a law with me to chastise those who live in impiety and wickedness,' he says.
1:2553
'Those men then,' he says, 'were not subject to punishment on account of any virtue, yet they have become captives of the spear.'
1:2554
'And do you expect to escape? But you shall not attain your hope, for drinking you shall surely drink.' (13)
1:2555
Because I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, that you shall be for desolation and a reproach, and for an untrodden waste and a curse.
1:2556
Bosor is in the midst of her territory, and all her cities shall be desolate forever.
1:2557
By Bosor he does not mean this Bostra, but another situated in Idumaea.
1:2558
I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent messengers to the nations, saying: Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and arise to war against her.
1:2559
Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and arise to war against her.
1:2560
The words 'he sent messengers to the nations' he has set down in the sense of 'he commanded.'
1:2561
And it is likely that angels ministering to the divine command also stir up the enemies.
1:2562
He sent forth upon them the wrath of his anger.
1:2563
Fury, and wrath, and affliction, a mission by evil angels. He calls them evil, not as being such by nature, but as being sent forth for the sake of punishment.
1:2564
For we are accustomed to call 'evils' also the calamities that are brought upon men.
1:2565

Thus an angel destroyed the firstborn of the Egyptians.
1:2566

For the Idumaeans are obscure.
1:2570
And they would have been utterly unknown, had not the divine Scripture made them manifest.
1:2571
And it makes them manifest not to all, but to the diligent.
1:2572
Your sport has brought these things upon you, and the dishonor of your heart.
1:2573
By these words he accuses them of idolatry, and luxury, and licentiousness.
1:2574

He has lodged in the clefts of the rocks. And we have already said before what kind of refuges they had.
1:2575
He has laid hold of the strength of a lofty hill. He means the mountain peaks.
1:2576
And these are very great and lofty.
1:2577

And Idumaea shall become an untrodden waste.
1:2580

He says that those who pass through her shall marvel, and by their hissing shall make plain the exceeding measure of her desolation.
1:2581
And that, like Sodom and Gomorrah and the other cities which shared with these in their suffering, the aforementioned cities shall become desolate in like manner.
1:2582
He says also that the Babylonian shall rush upon her like a lion, and shall make his way through the Jordan.
1:2583
And he commands the chosen men to arm themselves against her, and he adds:
1:2584
For who is like me? And who shall withstand me? Who is this shepherd that shall stand before my face? For neither the kings nor their idols, when I give command, shall be able to withstand.
1:2585
Then he says that their sheep shall be few in number, and their land untrodden.
1:2586
And that the Babylonian shall set upon them like an eagle, and shall prevail over their strongholds.
1:2587

And that the Idumaeans shall fall into cowardice and anguish, so that their heart shall be likened to a woman in travail.
1:2588

Hamath is ashamed, and Arphad, because they heard an evil report.
1:2589
Hamath, as we have already said before, means Emesa.
1:2590
But there is also another Hamath, which is now Epiphania.
1:2591

As for Arphath, some say that these are the places now called Rhephanea.
1:2592
「他們在海中驚惶,他們發怒,總不能安歇。」他以「海」來稱呼那大軍的眾多;
'They were confounded in the sea, they were troubled, they can find no rest.' By 'the sea' he named the multitude of the host;
1:2593
for concerning them he said, 'They were troubled'; and he exposes the cowardice that followed thereafter.
1:2594

「他怎麼沒有撇棄我的眾城,反倒愛慕我的村莊呢?」他說:「他企圖奪取我的眾城與村莊」;
'How has he not forsaken my cities, but has loved my village?' 'My cities,' he says, 'and villages he undertook to seize';
1:2596

and by 'his own cities and villages' he names those of Israel;
1:2597
因為他在敘利亞話中被稱為巴拉達;
for he was called Baradad in the Syrian tongue;
1:2598
against whom he threatens the burning.
1:2599

'To Kedar, the queen of the court, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon smote, thus said the Lord.'
1:2601
基達是以實瑪利眾子之一,這是創世記所教導的;
Kedar was one of the sons of Ishmael, and this the book of Genesis teaches;
1:2602
κατ'.
在那時,正如所料,這一支派掌管著其餘的各支派;
and at that time, as is likely, this tribe held dominion over the others;
1:2603
wherefore he also names her queen.
1:2604
他以「宮廷」稱呼撒拉森人全體的營帳;

they are easily captured and easily overcome.'
1:2615

for having forsaken the utter wilderness, they now draw near to the inhabited strongholds.
1:2621
