1:2637
'And I will set my throne in Elam, and I will destroy thence king and nobles,' says the Lord.
1:2638
The phrase 'I will set my throne' stands for 'there I will judge and pronounce the verdict,' using the enemies as it were as executioners.
1:2639
如今他在那裡仍有寶座,因為這城也已歸向了敬虔;
And even now he has his throne there, this city too having been changed unto piety;
1:2640
so that according to this sense also the prediction is true.
1:2641
'And it shall come to pass in the last of the days, I will turn again the captivity of Elam,' says the Lord.
1:2642
因為他更加看顧眾人的靈魂;
for he takes greater care of souls;
1:2643
for this very reason he applies chastisements also to bodies.
1:2644
He foretells therefore the abolition of the devil, and the ceasing of impiety, and the freedom of men who had been made captives by sin.
1:2645
我們既已得著這自由,就當歌頌那賜下它的主,愛慕那自由的生命,並憎惡先前為奴的光景;
Having obtained which, let us hymn the Giver thereof, and love the life of freedom, and abhor our former bondage;
1:2646
Having foretold what should befall the other nations, he next predicts the destruction of Babylon.
1:2647
「你們要在列國中宣告,使人聽見,並要豎起旗號;
'Declare among the nations, and make it heard, and lift up a signal;
1:2648
要使人聽見,不可隱瞞」;
make it heard, and hide it not';
1:2649
Since the king of the Babylonians, having dissolved the other kingdoms, compelled them to be subject to his own dominion, he commands that the dissolution of this one be announced to the nations.
1:2650
「彼勒蒙羞。」這是巴比倫人極其尊崇的一個偶像;
'Bel is put to shame.' It was an idol exceedingly honoured by the Babylonians;
1:2651
first as being unable to help those who worshipped it, and then as being utterly deprived of its honours.
1:2652
'The undaunted, the delicate.' He has shown both their power and their luxurious living.
1:2653
'Merodach is delivered up.' They named the first who reigned over the Babylonians Merodach.
1:2654
Here therefore he speaks either of the last king, in whose time the dissolution of the kingdom took place, or of the first, who transferred the kingdom from Nineveh to Babylon.
1:2655
「被交出了」既可指第二位,也可指第一位;但論到第二位,所指的乃是王國本身;
And of the second one might take the 'is delivered up,' and also of the first; but of the second, the kingdom itself;
1:2656
and he says that all her idols too were put to shame, and their weakness made manifest.
1:2657
By 'a nation from the north that marched against Babylon' he means the Medes.
1:2658
'These,' he says, 'both made their land desolate, and utterly laid it waste.'
1:2659
那十個支派和那兩個支派都必得著自由;
both the ten tribes and the two shall receive their freedom;
1:2660
and thereupon they shall return, and shall flee unto the Lord.
1:2661
接著他把他們比作迷失的羊;
Then he likens them to lost sheep;
1:2662
他把羊群喪亡的罪責歸咎於牧人;
and he lays the blame for the sheep's ruin upon the shepherds;
1:2663
他所稱的牧人不僅指君王,也指祭司;
and by shepherds he means not only the kings, but also the priests;
1:2664
and he tells also in what way they contrived to lead them astray:
1:2665
'They drove them out onto the mountains;'
1:2666
「他們使羊群走迷,從這山流蕩到那岡,忘了自己安歇之處。」他所稱的「岡」與「山」,是指偶像的廟宇;
'they led them astray; they wandered from mountain to hill, they forgot their resting-place.' By 'hills' and 'mountains' he means the precincts of the idols;
1:2667
因為他們正是在那些地方敬拜偶像;
for it was in those places that they worshipped the idols;
1:2668
他所稱他們的「安歇之處」,是指那神聖的殿宇;
and by their 'resting-place' he means the divine temple;
1:2669
for it was from there that they had the enjoyment of good things.
1:2670
'This error,' he says, 'has delivered them over to their enemies, in return for the sins they committed against the Lord.'
1:2671
'A pasture of righteousness to him who gathered their fathers unto the Lord.'
1:2672
'But we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.' This too is what he says here:
1:2673
namely, that they were a pasture of righteousness to the Lord, who chose out their fathers.
1:2674
'Be estranged from the midst of Babylon, and go forth from the land of the Chaldeans;'
1:2675
'and become like young goats before the flock.'
1:2676
The 'young goats' the Syrian rendered as 'he-goats.'
1:2677
因此他勸勉他們要勝過巴比倫人,並要奪取那壓迫他們的;
He therefore urges them to prevail over the Babylonians, and to seize the one who oppressed them;
1:2678
正是為此,他才把他們比作公山羊;
for it was for this reason that he likened them also to he-goats;
1:2679
for the he-goats are stronger than the sheep.
1:2680
He tells also of the multitude of those advancing against Babylon, and that they shall prevail, and shall be filled with the good things gathered together there.
1:2681
'Because you rejoiced and boasted, plundering my inheritance.'
1:2682
'And because you leaped like calves in the pasture, and gored like bulls.'
1:2683
'And their mother was greatly put to shame.'
1:2684
'She who bore you was buried out of prosperity.'
1:2685
意即:她已歸於烏有;
That is to say, she has been brought to nothing;
1:2686
這乃是表明那傾覆之徹底;
and this signifies the utterness of the overthrow;
1:2687
for this is what the following words will also teach.
1:2688
'Behold, the last of the nations, a desert and a waterless land.'
1:2689
(ιγʹ.)

'(v. 13.) And because of the Lord's wrath she shall not be inhabited, and all of her shall become an utter desolation.'
1:2690
He says also that those passing through are gloomy because of the exceeding greatness of the calamity, and by their hissing make plain their astonishment.
1:2691
He commands also the archers to loose their arrows unsparingly, and to exact penalties for her impiety.

and he adds the cause of the disaster.
1:2695
'Because vengeance is from God, take vengeance upon her;'
1:2696
'as she has done, so do to her;'
1:2697
( ιϛʹ.)
'(v. 16.) Cut off the seed from Babylon, and him that holds the sickle in the time of harvest.'
1:2698
That is to say: deliver over to death not only those who wage war, but also those who till the ground.
1:2699
For this is what they too had done in warring against Israel.
1:2700
「因怕希臘人的刀劍,各人必歸回本民,各人必逃回本地。」在攻打巴比倫之前,居魯士已征服了呂底亞人;
'From before the Greek sword each shall return to his own people, and each shall flee to his own land.' Before Babylon, Cyrus overthrew the Lydians;
1:2701
他也制伏了愛奧尼亞人和伊奧利亞人;
and he subjugated also the Ionians and the Aeolians;
1:2702
這些人原是從希臘遷來,定居於亞細亞的;
and these had migrated out of Greece, and settled in Asia;
1:2703
leading these also, then, Cyrus made his campaign against Babylon.
1:2704
然而先知的話提及希臘人並非徒然;
The prophetic word, however, did not mention the Greeks in vain;
1:2705
but rather teaching that the divine decree gathered even the nations settled far away against the Babylonians.
1:2706
'Israel is a wandering sheep.'
1:2707
The error concerning the idols became for him the procurer of his evils.
1:2708
'Lions drove him out.' He so named the kings of the Assyrians.
1:2709
「起先吞吃他們的是亞述王」:提革拉毗列色、撒縵以色和西拿基立;
'The first devoured them, the king of Assyria': Tiglath-pileser, and Shalmaneser, and Sennacherib;
1:2710
and thus a later king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, devoured his bones.
1:2711
That is to say, the remnants of the forefathers.
1:2712

'I will exact,' and she shall suffer these things which Nineveh suffered, the ancient metropolis of the Assyrians.
1:2713
但我懲罰了這些人之後,必領以色列歸回他祖宗之地;
But having punished these, I will bring Israel back to his ancestral land;
1:2714
for by 'Bashan, and Carmel, and Mount Ephraim' he means this land.
1:2715
He foretells also the change for the better, and the deliverance from the former error.
1:2716
接著他又把迦勒底人之地稱作那惹動苦毒之人的地;
Then again he calls the land of the Chaldeans a land of those who provoke to bitterness;
1:2717
他所稱的「刀劍」,是指仇敵;
and by 'sword' he means the enemies;
1:2718
and he commands these to rush against those, and to do the things commanded by him.
1:2719
And by 'hammer of the whole earth' he named the kingdom of the Babylonians, as having inflicted a blow upon all the nations, and having overthrown the other kingdoms.
1:2720
For it is proper to a hammer to crush the things struck by it.
1:2721
'The Lord opened his treasury, and brought forth the vessels of his wrath;'
1:2722
'for it is a work for God, even the Lord of hosts, in the land of the Chaldeans.'
1:2723
'For her appointed times have come.'
1:2724
By 'vessels of wrath' he means the enemies, as ministering to his wrath.
1:2725
And by 'treasures' he called the sentence of punishment, and by 'her times' the punishment itself.
1:2726
Then, teaching that he himself brings on the punishment, he urges them also to search out the storehouses, and to destroy everything, and to leave not even a trace of the former prosperity.
1:2727
He foretells also those fleeing from there, the multitude of the Jews, and coming to Jerusalem, and reporting the evils that had overtaken Babylon.
1:2728
Then, having urged that she suffer what she had done, for he says, 'Repay her according to her works,' and having displayed the very frenzy of God against her, he directs his words to her.
1:2729
'Behold, I am against you, you insolent one, says the Lord of hosts.'
1:2730
The appellation applied to her hints at her arrogance against God, and makes plain her lawlessness toward all men.
1:2731
'For the day of your fall is come, and the time of your vengeance.'
1:2732
(λβʹ.)
(32.) 'And your pride shall grow weak and fall, and there shall be none to raise it up;'
1:2733
'and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.'
1:2734
By 'those round about' he means her subjects.
1:2735
And by 'the weakening of pride' he means the dissolution of her dominion.
1:2736
'These things,' he says, 'they shall suffer, because, having enslaved my people, they were unwilling to restore their freedom to them in due time.'
1:2737
For this reason, therefore, he threatens to deliver up to the enemy both the city and its inhabitants, and the oracles of her false prophecy, and those accustomed to hold pre-eminence in her, and those who came to their aid, and the treasures laid up in store.
1:2738
他又威嚇說,要使她的水枯乾消失;
He threatens also to make her waters vanish away;
1:2739
他以「水」比喻地指稱她眾多的百姓;
and by 'water' he figuratively names the multitude of her people;
1:2740
yet it is likely that he also foretells what would befall the water itself.
1:2741
For of old the Euphrates cut through the midst of her, but now the river has been turned into another course, and only a very small channel makes its way through the ruins.
1:2742
By 'islands' he calls the houses of the city, since the water washed around the enclosing walls on every side, and again the river ran through the midst of the city.
1:2743
他以「幻象」指稱群鬼的顯現;
By 'phantoms' he means the apparitions of the demons;
1:2744
至於「海妖的女兒」,敘利亞譯本則譯作鴕鳥;
and 'daughters of Sirens' the Syriac rendered as ostriches;
1:2745
神聖的聖經慣於如此稱呼群鬼,因為牠們迷惑並欺騙世人;
and it is the custom of divine Scripture so to call demons, because they bewitch and deceive men;
1:2746
and both these creatures and those are indicative of desolation.
1:2747
「她必永不再被建造,也必世世代代不再有人居住。」這兩者都確已應驗;
'And it shall no more be built up for ever, neither shall it be inhabited any more from generation to generation.' And both have come to pass in fact;
1:2748
因為她既未曾重建,直到今日仍被剝奪了城牆,並且長久以來荒無人煙;
for neither has it been rebuilt, but has been stripped of its walls even to this day, and has remained uninhabited for a very long time;
1:2749
for this is what he meant by 'from generation to generation.' And even now only a few Jews dwell in this land.
1:2750
He likens her to Sodom and Gomorrah, both on account of her former impiety, and on account of the ruin subsequently brought upon her.
1:2751
他又描述仇敵的全副武裝,說它彷彿翻騰洶湧的海;
He also indicates the full armament of the enemy, and says it is like a surging sea;
1:2752
and he says that the hands of the Babylonians were paralysed with fear, and he likens their anguish to the birth-pangs of a woman.
1:2753
'And who shall withstand me? And who is this shepherd that shall stand before my face?' Since he was called the shepherd of Israel, and the kings of Babylon supposed that they would prevail over the God of all, he teaches that it is he himself who brings the punishment upon them, having power beyond all comparison.
1:2754
接著他又吩咐,連羊群中的羔羊也要毀滅,草場也要荒廢;
Then he further commands that the very lambs of the flock be destroyed and the pasture be laid waste;
1:2755
and by 'lambs' he means the infants, and by 'pasture' the city and the land lying beneath it.
1:2756
'For blessed,' he says, 'is he who shall seize your little ones and dash them against the rock.'
1:2757
For since the city was renowned, the report of her calamity also ran everywhere.
1:2758
第五十一章 然後他以不同的名稱稱呼那些仇敵;
CHAPTER 51. Then he calls the enemy by various names;
1:2759
首先稱之為灼熱的風;
and first, a scorching wind;
1:2760
for this is wont by nature to destroy plants.
1:2761
And by this he signifies the justice of the punishment.
1:2762
'For you shall suffer,' he says, 'what you have done.'
1:2763
Having commanded these to employ their wrath unsparingly against all, he added:
1:2764
'for I have not utterly stripped them of my care.'
1:2765
'Babylon is a golden cup in the Lord's hand, that made all the earth drunk with her wine;'
1:2766
'the nations drank of this, the nations were shaken.'
1:2767
'And suddenly Babylon has fallen and is shattered.'
1:2768
And here too he named the punishment inflicted through her upon the other nations a 'golden cup.'
1:2769
He says, therefore, that she brought punishment upon the other nations also, yet she herself was suddenly, beyond all expectation, captured and overthrown.
1:2770
Then to the nations that had come to her aid he says, 'Lament for her;'
1:2771
「要為她的毀壞取乳香,或者她可以痊癒。」意即:將救助的良藥施於她身上;
'take balm for her destruction, if perhaps she may be healed.' That is to say, apply to her the remedies of help;
1:2772
and the prophet employs personification, and sets down the reply of those others.
1:2773
'We would have healed her, but she was not healed;'
1:2774
'let us forsake her, and let us go each one to his own land;'
1:2775
'for her judgment has drawn near to heaven, and is lifted up even to the stars.'
1:2776
'The Lord has brought forth his judgment.'
1:2777
巴比倫這樣的驕橫,蒙福的以賽亞也曾預言過;
This arrogance of the Babylonian the blessed Isaiah also foretold;
1:2778
'The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the king of the Medes;'
1:2779
'for his anger is against Babylon, to destroy her utterly;'
1:2780
'for it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for his temple, upon the walls of Babylon.'
1:2781
'What she has dared against the temple, I will bring upon the walls of Babylon.'
1:2782
然後他以反諷的口吻吩咐巴比倫人,既要在城牆上設立守望的人,又要喚醒他們,並要預備兵器;
Then ironically he commands the Babylonians both to set watchmen upon the walls, and to rouse them, and to make ready their arms;
1:2783
and teaching that no benefit will come to them from this, he added:
1:2784
'And the Lord will do all that he has spoken against those who dwell in Babylon.' For he foretold her destruction through the prophets.
1:2785
他又說神指著自己的膀臂起誓,意即指著祂自己的能力;
And he says that God swore by his arm, that is to say, by his own power;
1:2786
'Who makes the earth by his strength;'
1:2787
'who prepares the inhabited world by his wisdom;'
1:2788
'by his understanding he stretched out the heaven.'
1:2789
'... in heaven, and he brought up clouds from the ends of the earth;'
1:2790
'he made lightnings for the rain;'
1:2791
'he brought forth light out of his treasuries.'
1:2792
他既陳明了創造之工,也陳明了眷佑之工;
He has set down both the works of creation and the works of providence;
1:2793
for he has not only made all things, but also continues to govern them.
1:2794
The phrase 'At the voice of his sound he set a multitude of water in heaven' teaches concerning the crash of thunder produced through the clouds.
1:2795
他在論神的道理旁邊,並列陳明群鬼的無能;
He sets alongside his theology the weakness of the demons;
1:2796
and he shows that they stand in need of the craft of goldsmiths, and that, being made by others, they have not even the power to breathe like the irrational animals.
1:2797
He also foretells their cessation.
1:2798
'For in the time of their visitation,' he says, 'they shall perish.'
1:2799
( ιθʹ.)
(19.) 'Not such is the portion of Jacob; for he who formed all things, he himself is his portion, and Israel is the rod of his inheritance;'
1:2800
'the Lord of hosts is his name.'
1:2801
Those were the gods of Babylon, but the God of Israel is the Maker of all things.
1:2802
With good reason, therefore, the former are dissolved, while the latter return home.
1:2803
This the Syriac rendered thus: 'Prepare for me the weapons of war.' According to the Greek rendering, however, it is to be understood in this way:
1:2804
Since you employed your weapons against my people, and hurled arrows and spears against them, I too will scatter nations by means of you.
1:2805
Having scattered them, I too will disperse the nations that have come to your aid, and the horses, and their riders, and every age, and both sexes, and rulers and ruled, and shepherds and farmers.
1:2806
And these things you shall suffer, for what you dared to do against Zion.
1:2807
Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, says the Lord, that destroys all the earth.
1:2808
He calls it a mountain because of the conspicuousness of its dominion, but 'destroyed' because of its impiety and lawlessness.
1:2809
And I will stretch out my hand against you, and roll you down from the rocks. That is: I will show you to be brought low.
1:2810
And I will make you a burnt mountain, that is, utterly useless.
1:2811
And they shall not take from you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for a foundation, for you shall be a perpetual desolation, says the Lord.
1:2812
They appointed neither king nor ruler from among the new inhabitants.
1:2813
For the foundations bear the building, and the corners join it together.
1:2814
Raise a signal upon the earth, sound a trumpet among the nations.
1:2815
Summon against her, at my command, the kingdoms of Ararat, and the Ashkenazites.
1:2816
By 'Ararat' he means Armenia.
1:2817
And the Ashkenazites are another nation neighboring upon those.
1:2818
波斯與瑪代的王將這一切都聚集起來;
All these the king of the Persians and Medes gathered together;
1:2819
the king of the Medes, and his leaders, and all his commanders.
1:2820
He says also that the earth was shaken.
1:2821
He foretells also the siege, and the feebleness of those fighting within, and the burning of the city, and those who announce its capture to the king.
1:2822
He likens the demolition of the houses to a threshing-floor made fine, and to a ripe harvest.
1:2823
He sets down also the words of Jerusalem, which she spoke concerning the king of the Babylonians.
1:2824
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has divided me, devoured me, seized me like fine darkness.
1:2825
The finest air penetrates our bodies more readily.
1:2826
She says, then, that 'the darkness of calamity filled the very members of my soul.'
1:2827
他使我如同空的器皿,又像大蛇將我吞下;
He set me as an empty vessel, and swallowed me down like a dragon;
1:2828
he filled his belly from my delicacies. He says: 'He stripped me of all good things, and imitated a dragon swallowing sparrows' young, taking away all my wealth and stripping me of my prosperity.'
1:2829
'My afflictions be upon Babylon,' shall Zion's inhabitant say;
1:2830
'and my blood upon those who dwell in Chaldea,' shall Jerusalem say.
1:2831
'My blood,' she says, 'shall be avenged upon them, and they shall pay the penalty for the lawless deeds they committed against me.'
1:2832
Thus the prophet sets forth the matters concerning Jerusalem, and the just sentence pronounced by God.
1:2833
Behold, I will judge your adversary, and will execute vengeance for you.
1:2834
Since you have come to know the harm that arises from sin.
1:2835
And I will make her sea desolate. That is, the multitude of her subjects.
1:2836
And I will dry up her fountain. That is, her kingdom and her dominion over all.
1:2837
Then he speaks also of the things proper to desolation, concerning which we have often spoken.
1:2838
It shall not be inhabited as a single whole. For it now has few houses, and these scattered.
1:2839
Having likened her nobles to lions, he foretells both their cowardice and their destruction.
1:2840
And I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, and like rams with kids.
1:2841
就是掌權者與受治者,以及那與王一同的臣民;
That is, both rulers and ruled, and along with the king his subjects;
1:2842
for by 'lambs' and 'kids' he called the subjects, and by 'rams' the rulers.
1:2843
How is Sheshach taken, and the boast of all the earth captured? Thus he calls Babylon herself.
1:2844
For indeed he named her king 'Sheshach' in what was interpreted earlier.
1:2845
It is likely that she was so named of old, and was later renamed Babylon.
1:2846
That he does indeed call the city by this name, what follows bears witness.
1:2847
海水漲溢淹沒巴比倫;
The sea has come up upon Babylon;
1:2848
she was overwhelmed by the roar of its waves.
1:2849
Then, having foretold the desolation, he again brings Bel into the midst.
1:2850
For I will take vengeance, he says, upon Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth what he has swallowed;
1:2851
and the nations shall no longer be gathered together unto him.
1:2852
這先知的話語也預言了那迷惑(偶像崇拜)的止息;
The prophetic word foretells also the cessation of the error;
1:2853
and it consoles the people, and exhorts them not to fear the evils coming upon Babylon, and teaches that these things were made known long beforehand.
1:2854
For the report shall come in the same year, and after it, in the following year, the report and the injustice in the land.
1:2855
And ruler against ruler, and parable against parable.
1:2856
For though the assault of the enemy was announced one or two years beforehand, they persisted in wrongdoing and transgressing after their custom.
1:2857
And he teaches also the justice of the punishment.
1:2858
And indeed in Babylon the slain of Israel shall fall within her.
1:2859
照樣,巴比倫被殺的人也必因全地而倒下;
So also the slain of Babylon shall fall by all the earth;
1:2860
for what she wrought against Israel, she shall suffer at the hands of others.
1:2861
你們從那地逃脫的人哪,要去,不可站住;
You who have escaped from the land, go, and do not stand still;
1:2862
remember the Lord, you who are far off.
1:2863
These things he says to the captive Jews.
1:2864
And let Jerusalem come up upon your heart. Do not forget the city that is consecrated to God.
1:2865
Then, in the person of those very ones:
1:2866
We were put to shame, because we heard our reproach.
1:2867
Disgrace has covered our face.
1:2868
Strangers have entered into our holy places, into the house of the Lord.
1:2869
Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will take vengeance upon her graven images, and throughout all her land the slain shall fall.
1:2870
For though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, from me shall come those who destroy her, says the Lord.
1:2871
It had very great walls, and exceedingly high ones.
1:2872
when He pronounces His sentence against them.
1:2873
And He joins the deed to the divine sentence, and says:
1:2874
A sound of crying in Babylon, and great destruction in the land of the Chaldeans.
1:2875
For the Lord has utterly destroyed Babylon, and has cut off from her the voice that resounded like many waters.
1:2876
By these words He has made plain the multitude of the inhabitants.
1:2877
And she gained no benefit, He says, from her bows nor from her spears, since God was exacting justice upon her.
1:2878
For besides her generals and her champions—And her greatest wall shall be razed to the ground, and her lofty gates shall become fuel for the fire. Having thus foretold these things, he teaches that he wrote this prophecy in the fourth year of the reign of Zedekiah, God having commanded this—
1:2879
是給西萊雅的,他是被西底家差往巴比倫去的;
to Seraiah, who was sent by Zedekiah to Babylon;
1:2880
and how He charged him to read the book in Babylon, and to say:
1:2881
O Lord, You have spoken concerning this place, to utterly destroy it, so that there should be no inhabitant in it, from man even to beast, for it shall be a desolation for ever.
1:2882
And when you have prayed these things, He said, and have bound the book to a stone, cast it into the Euphrates, and you shall say:
1:2883
Thus shall Babylon sink down, and shall not rise again, because of the evils which I bring upon her.
1:2884
so that, learning both of this city's capture and of their own liberation, they might have the hope of good things as a consolation.
1:2885
The prophecy, then, here reached its conclusion.
1:2886
But in a more historical manner he recounts what follows.
1:2887
他既教導西底家如何登基作王,又教導他始終行不法之事;
And teaching both how Zedekiah reigned, and that he persisted in transgressing;
1:2888
以及在他在位第九年,尼布甲尼撒如何出兵攻打他,並持續圍困耶路撒冷直到第十一年,在城外築起另一道用極大石頭砌成的壘牆;
and how in the ninth year of his reign Nebuchadnezzar marched against him, and continued besieging Jerusalem until the eleventh year, having raised outside another rampart of very great stones;
1:2889
and how the famine wrought upon those within more grievously than the enemy did.
1:2890
他既定了西底家背棄誓言的罪,就先殺了他的眾子,然後殺了眾首領;
And he, having convicted Zedekiah of the breaking of his oaths, first slew his sons, then the princes;
1:2891
and how, after that bitter spectacle, he gouged out the king's eyes, and having put fetters upon him, carried him off to Babylon, and delivered him to the millhouse.
1:2892
所羅門所造的那些巨大的銅柱,以及那銅海,他都熔化了帶到巴比倫去,連同那些座架與盆子;
And the huge bronze pillars which Solomon had made, and the bronze sea, he melted down and carried away to Babylon, together with the bases and the lavers;
1:2893
and the bases the Syriac version rendered as foot-basins.
1:2894
And the other vessels also he carried off along with these.
1:2895
他所說的「撒福特」,是指那些小柱(尖柱);
And by 'Sapphoth' he means the small pillars (obelisks);
1:2896
他又教導巴比倫王如何殺了首席祭司與副祭司,以及那些與他們一同被擄去的人;
and he teaches how the king of the Babylonians slew both the first priest and the second, and those who were led away captive with them;
1:2897
他也述說了那些被擄去之俘虜的數目;
and he states also the number of the captives who were led away;
1:2898
and in addition to these, he explains how, after the thirty-seven years of Jeconiah's captivity—
1:2899
for he calls him Joakim—
1:2900
Evil-merodach the king freed this same Jeconiah from prison, and, showing him kindness, deemed him worthy of a royal throne, and commanded him to sit as king above the others, and kept him as a table-companion, generously supplying him with the enjoyment of all necessities.
1:2901
For in punishing He shows mercy, and by bringing chastisement He consoles the soul, and He tempers the sentence of justice with lovingkindness.
1:2902
所以,讓我們敬畏那審判的公義,並且因祂的慈愛得著勇氣,不要對救恩絕望;
Let us, therefore, fear the justice of the judgment, and, taking courage in His lovingkindness, let us not despair of salvation;
1:2903
but let us wait for the divine mercy, and walk the straight path, that we may attain the blessed end, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to our Father be glory, together with the all-holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
1:2904
那可敬的巴錄與逃到埃及去的猶太人一同起行;
The admirable Baruch departed together with the Jews who had fled into Egypt;
1:2905
因為這事我們在前文中已經受教了;
for this we were taught in what preceded;
1:2906
yet five years after the taking of the city, he arrived at Babylon.
1:2907
For those reared in piety brought all diligence to bear, so as to support the weak and to guide them toward the truth.
1:2908
他既到了巴比倫,就向眾被擄的人宣讀神聖的耶利米的預言,甚至也向耶哥尼雅宣讀——他作王的時候不長,就成了刀下的俘虜;
Having therefore arrived at Babylon, he read out the prophecy of the divine Jeremiah to all the captives, and indeed also to Jeconiah, who, having reigned only a short time, had become a captive of the spear;
1:2909
and he did not fail of his aim.
1:2910
For the Hebrews call the manna a sacrifice.
1:2911
And they ask for life both for Nebuchadnezzar and for Belshazzar his son.
1:2912
Thus too the divine Apostle laid down the law of praying on behalf of kings who still warred against piety, and of those in positions of eminence and authority.
1:2913
So great is the harmony of the old with the new.
1:2914
And they too, being compelled to serve, ask that their eyes may be enlightened, lest they should suffer any deception.
1:2915
And they call to mind also their own sins, and they confess the justice of the divine sentence.
1:2916
And they entreat that this very letter of theirs be read before God at the splendid feasts.
1:2917
And you shall say, He says: To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us belongs the shame of our face, as at this day, to the man of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to our rulers, and to our priests, before the Lord.
1:2918
And we are worthy of shame, having all in common transgressed the law.
1:2919
For along with the kings, the priests also turned to the opposite course.
1:2920
And we did not hearken to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord which He set before our face.
1:2921
And they call to mind also the things of old.
1:2922
因為從我們列祖脫離埃及人的奴役之時,直到如今,我們始終不斷地干犯神聖的律法;
For from the time when our fathers were freed from the bondage of the Egyptians until the present, we have continued transgressing the divine law;
1:2923
and we acted heedlessly, so as not to hearken to His voice.
1:2924
至於「我們草率行事」這句話,其意乃是「我們竟發明各樣罪的形式」;這樣的人,蒙福的保羅也稱之為「發明惡事的人」;
And the phrase 'we acted heedlessly' stands for 'we even devised forms of sins'; such men the blessed Paul also calls inventors of evils;
1:2925
and we have reaped, he says, the fruits of our sins.
1:2926
For evils clung to us, and the curse which the Lord ordained for Moses His servant.
1:2927
律法既包含咒詛,也包含祝福;
The law contains both the curses and the blessings;
1:2928
the blessings for those who keep it, but the curses for those who transgress it.
1:2929
And they tell how they despised even the prophets who were sent to them by God, and that the things foretold by those prophets came to their fulfillment.
1:2930
And He has brought, he says, upon us great evils, such as have not been done under the whole heaven, according to what He did in Jerusalem.
1:2931
And teaching that these things too had been foretold, they added:
1:2932
According to what is written in the law of Moses.
1:2933
That a man should eat the flesh of his own son, and a man the flesh of his own daughter.
1:2934
因為那圍困造成了饑荒;
For the siege brought about the famine;
1:2935
and the famine constrained them to partake of human bodies.
1:2936
We have become, he says, an object of gloating even to the nations that are our neighbours.
1:2937
And we have become underneath and not on top—that is, slaves and not masters.
1:2938
Then they add the cause: Because we have sinned against the Lord our God, in not hearkening to His voice. Again, having assigned the justice to the divine sentence, they assign to themselves the shame.
1:2939
For though God had often threatened, and had foretold these things through the prophets, we did not turn to the Eternal One in our days, but continued resisting.
1:2940
And the Lord kept watch over the evils which He brought upon us.
1:2941
He calls the punishment the awakening of God.
1:2942
For it is the custom of divine Scripture to call His long-suffering a sleep.
1:2943
For those who transgressed and were unwilling to be healed, He chastised.
1:2944
Then, lamenting, they entreat Him, and call to remembrance the ancient freedom which their fathers obtained when they were delivered from the bitter bondage of the Egyptians.
1:2945
And they also call to remembrance the wonders that had been wrought.
1:2946
They also set forth their own transgressions, and cry aloud:
1:2947
'We have sinned, we have acted impiously, we have done wrong, O Lord our God, against all Thy ordinances.'
1:2948
'We have transgressed,' he says, 'Thine every commandment, we have trampled underfoot every law.'
1:2949
'Let Thy wrath be turned away from us, for we are left few out of many among the nations, whither Thou hast scattered us.'
1:2950
'We confess the justice of the punishment.'
1:2951
'But we beseech that it may cease;'
