15:1
' CAPUT PRIMUM. Cum in sacris voluminipus liltera rum, seu tuturorum quid prophetico spiritu pronun tiantibus, seu præteritorum historica veritate nar rantibus, seu vitæ monita apostolica auctoritate tra dentibus, aliqua veluti diversum sonante sententia vel movetur lector, vel sollicitatur auditor, certa et inconcussa fide cognitum teneri debet, unius atque ejusdem spiritus, et ejus præter quem nulluu nihil est veritatis, apertius alibi, paulo occultius alibi so- nare mysteria.
CHAPTER ONE. When in the sacred volumes of the Scriptures—whether those pronouncing something of things future by a prophetic spirit, or narrating things past with historical truth, or delivering counsels of life with apostolic authority—some passage, as it were sounding differently in its sentence, either moves the reader or troubles the hearer, it must be held with sure and unshaken faith as known that the mysteries of one and the same Spirit—and of Him besides whom there is nothing of truth—sound forth more openly in one place, a little more hiddenly in another.
15:2
And rightly, if anything is left suspended by a hidden signification, or briefly indicated by the writer and expounded less than the dullness of the human heart demanded, let him know that here it appears more clearly, there it lies more deeply hidden, but that nowhere is the truth lacking. But if, on account of the greatness of the matter concerning which the inquiry is made, the understanding does not easily meet the senses of the inquirer—especially if concerning the immutable will of almighty God each sentence of canonical authority sounds differently—then all those things are to be directed to the rule of piety, so that it be held by unshaken definition that God is neither unjust, nor one who loosens the merits of individuals by a certain confused respect of persons, nor weak, so as to be unable to accomplish whatever He has willed.
15:3
CAP. II. Sub hujus igitur definitionis jugo, ne in sacrilegam temeritatem male libera colla luxurient, quæstionis hujus, quantum Deo donanle possumus, occulta memoremus, quam beatus apostolus Paulus diversis in locis, non parum discrepantibus verbis, studiosis proponit scrutatoribus, eisque per ipsam loquiLur veritatem. Sententiam siquidcm in Dei gra tia praece lente, latissimaet robustissima disputatione confectam ita concludens, ait, Ergo cujus vult misere tur, et quem vult indurat (Rom. IX, 18); cum in alia Epistola de divina benevolentia, ipse sic dicat : Qui vult omnes homines salvos fieri, et in agnitionem veri tatis venire (1 Tim.
CHAPTER TWO. Under the yoke, therefore, of this definition, lest our badly free necks run riot into sacrilegious rashness, let us recall, as far as by God's gift we are able, the hidden things of this question, which the blessed apostle Paul in various places, with words not a little discrepant, sets before diligent examiners, and through it speaks to them the truth. For, concluding thus a sentence about the grace of God going before, wrought out with a very broad and very robust disputation, he says: 'Therefore He hath mercy on whom He will, and whom He will He hardeneth' (Rom. 9:18); while in another Epistle he himself speaks thus concerning the divine benevolence: 'Who willeth all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth' (1 Tim.
15:4
2:4). For the question arises: why some of these perish, when almighty God wills all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth? and then why He again hardens others, having had mercy on some? or in what manner He wills all men to be saved, when He Himself hardens some so that they may not be saved. This, as far as human justice is concerned, seems unjust. But who would be so foolish, or rather who would so blaspheme, as to say concerning the justice of God that it must be disputed by the law of human justice? which indeed, if it is opposed to the justice of God, is unjust. For from Him who is supremely just, it is manifest that everything which is in any way just flows forth.
15:5
Who then will there be who would make the wisdom of God—abiding immutably, and founding, ruling, and preserving all things that are—hang upon the judgment of human wisdom? Concerning which the same apostle says that 'the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God' (Rom. 8:7). And elsewhere: 'The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God' (1 Cor. 3:19). It is not therefore to be disputed concerning that majesty of divine wisdom by the judgment of human vanity. CHAPTER THREE. But if anyone, by thus nourishing his sins, is deceived by the figure or shadow, or by the swelling of pride flattering him, so as to say what the blessed apostle Paul at once saw that some would say—for he added: 'Someone will say: If He hath mercy on whom He will, and whom He will He hardeneth, why doth He yet complain?'
15:6
Voluntati enim ejus quis resistit (Rom. IX, 19.)?
'For who resisteth His will?' (Rom. 9:19)—let him know that by this sentence we are rather driven and constrained to humility and piety. For when the most ample teacher, referring the whole to God, denies it to human powers, what else does he exhort but that, suspended upon God with our whole heart, we should ask from Him the helps of salvation? Whom, therefore, this diversity in the dispensation of divine grace moves, and who thinks it unjust that to one is denied what another has received, let him understand how the Psalmist divinely said: 'All the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth' (Ps. 25:10); and let him acknowledge that God governs human affairs by such a judgment that He either justly renders the due punishments, or mercifully remits them.
15:7
For the stain of the corrupted root has so been spread through the shoots by the propagation of generations that not even an infant of one day is free from the guilt of the first transgression (Job 14:4, according to the Septuagint), unless he has been freed by the undeserved grace of the Savior. But if not even he is without sin who could not have any of his own, it follows that he has drawn that alien sin concerning which the Apostle says: 'By one man sin entered into the world, and by sin death, and so it passed unto all men, in whom all have sinned' (Rom. 5:12). And whoever denies this, denies indeed that we are firstly mortal. For if, as the Apostle says, 'By one man sin entered into the world, and by sin death:'
15:8
death could not enter except by sin entering. And since death is not a condition of nature, but the punishment of sin, it necessarily follows that the punishment follows the sin. But since death passed unto all men, of necessity sin must have passed unto all. In what manner sin is born as original with the little ones, we cannot see with the eyes of the flesh. But since we see all who are born carnally from Adam—and even those who are already reborn in Christ—bound by the law of death, through this—that we see the little ones always dying—we are compelled to confess that the little ones are always born with original sin.
15:9
For it could more easily happen that, although sin passed over, the punishment should by no means follow, than that one who has no guilt should take a part of the punishment with no communication of sin. If therefore, as has appeared, we are all born debtors from the seed of the transgressor—since in him all, as the Apostle says, have sinned, and the very mass from which we descend was already condemned in the beginning—let no one dare to complain of his own hardness, no one of his own punishment, which is owed by the mere condition of being born, even when there are no sins of one's own. But that God bestows undeserved mercy upon others converted by gratuitous calling, is to be referred not to the justice of the dispensation,
15:10
but to the most merciful bounty (elsewhere: liberty) of the Giver, and is to be referred by the reasoning of truth. Will a debtor dare to accuse a creditor of iniquity, if, giving to another, he exacts from him what was owed? If therefore, among the contracts of men, there is no ground of prescription such that a debtor may say that it is unjustly exacted from him because he knows that it was forgiven by the same creditor to another debtor what he owed; who would burst forth into such madness of profane speech as to accuse God of injustice, if to one He has given undeserved grace, and to another rendered the deserved punishment? CHAPTER FOUR. And so, from the earlier part of this sentence, which says: 'On whom He will He hath mercy,' I think that no one, unless unworthy of mercy, would dare to dispute. But as for what follows:
15:11
Quem vult indurat, ibi paululum hu manae mettis intentio verbi novitate conjunditur.
'Whom He will He hardeneth,' there the intention of the human mind is a little confounded by the novelty of the word. But it is not to be so understood, as if God works in a man that very hardness of heart which did not exist. For what else is hardness, than to oppose the commandments of God? Whence blessed Stephen said to the people: 'Stiff-necked, and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit' (Acts 7:51). And whoever thinks this to be done by God, on account of what is said: 'Whom He will He hardeneth,' let him look upon the very beginning of transgression, and let him attend to the commandment given by God, through which the guilt of transgression was wrought in the heart—although not even by that tempter could man have been compelled, if he had refused his assent.
15:12
Ergo quidquid quoad illam praevaricationem natus supplicii homo patitur, juste reddi meritoque fateatur.
所以,凡那生來受刑的人因那背逆所受的一切,就讓他承認乃是公義地、當得地施報的。因為神被說為叫那祂不願軟化的人剛硬。祂也照樣被說為使那祂不願光照的人瞎眼。祂也照樣被說為推開那祂不願呼召的人。「因為祂預先所定下的人,就召他們來;所召來的人,又稱他們為義」(羅八30)。因為祂自己使我們得以存在,祂自己使我們得以能為善。第五章。因為祂的神性預先認識了我們,祂的智慧創造了我們,祂的公義定了我們的罪,祂的恩典釋放了我們。因為世界雖然自被造之時起在時間中開始,卻在那將要造它的神性預知之光中不能有任何起頭;
Therefore whatever the man born to punishment suffers on account of that transgression, let him confess that it is justly rendered and deservedly. For God is said to harden him whom He has been unwilling to soften. So too He is said to blind him whom He has been unwilling to enlighten. So too He is said to repel him whom He has been unwilling to call. 'For whom He predestinated, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified' (Rom. 8:30). For He Himself gave that we should be, He Himself that we should be able to be good. CHAPTER FIVE. For His divinity foreknew us, His wisdom founded us, His justice condemned us, His grace freed us. For the world, although it began in time from the moment it was made, could have no beginning in that light of divine foreknowledge in which it was to be made;
15:13
I, 1), usque in finem omnium sæculorum. De quo line cum diceret beatus Moyses :
and however many men have been born, whether from Adam even to the present day, or shall be born after our age by the propagation of generation, they have already been born with God, and, the time of their whole life having run its course, they have passed away, yet nonetheless remaining in that light of the divine gaze. For God, who is neither enclosed by place nor forestalled by time, is full of the memory of all things, both past and of the knowledge of things impending: nor is He turned back in remembering into the past, nor is He stretched forward in hoping into the future. And whatsoever things there are at all, which are agitated by the motions of times, from that beginning in which 'was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God' (John 1:1), even unto the end of all the ages. Concerning which end, when blessed Moses said:
15:14
'O Lord,' he says, 'who reignest for ever and ever' (Exod. 15:18)—and still neither are things future hoped for, nor have things past passed away, but in the presence of the divinity, with the ever-present Leader, they are discerned. From Him therefore, because He is eternal and foreknowing, because He is both just and merciful—who exercises the due severity and displays the undeserved mercy, and has, in creating and choosing men, as the potter over the clay, the power—some vessels indeed have been made unto honor, but others unto dishonor. Before He made us, He foreknew us, and in that very foreknowledge, while He had not yet made us, He chose us. But by whom could this have been done, except by Him who 'calleth those things that are not, as those that are' (Rom. 4:17)?
15:15
For the Apostle says: 'Who chose us before the constitution of the world' (Eph. 1:4). Within the world we were made, and before the world we were chosen: and thus in one and the same time—neither passing nor future, but continuous—or if it can be said in any other way, if only it is with God, both to foreknow, and to make, and to choose, and, His foreknowledge remaining immutably, to choose those to be made whom He was going to make as those to be chosen: these things indeed, as far as pertains to the rule of faith, let them be said with God enlightening us. CHAPTER SIX. But now I see what calumnious depravity may here also object. For it follows that, if those whom He predestinated, them He also called, and if those whom He called, them He also justified (Rom.

8:30), then those who were neither predestinated, nor called, and by this neither justified, ought to be innocent of all guilt, and it would be unjust that punishments should be demanded from them, in that day of recognition, for the depravity of a life transacted. Let Paul the apostle say to these: 'Is there iniquity with God?' (Rom. 9:14). Let him at once himself answer: 'God forbid.' And when this has been founded in the mind of man by sound piety—that there is no iniquity with God—let him thus understand: 'On whom He will He hath mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth' (Rom. 9:18); as though He said: On whom He will He hath mercy, and on whom He will not He hath not mercy. And likewise let him understand this same thing again, as though it were said: To whom He will He gives, and from whom He will He demands the debt.
15:17
And whoever persists in calling this unjust, let him hear from the Apostle: 'O man, who art thou that repliest against God?' (Rom. 9:20). For fittingly does the apostolic authority rebuke impiety of this kind, striking with such weight from the exaggeration of names, when he says: 'O man, who art thou that repliest against God?' O man to God, clay to the potter! For the same apostle added: 'Doth the thing formed say to Him that formed it: Why hast Thou made me thus? Or hath not the potter power over the clay, out of the same mass to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?' (Rom. 9:21).
15:18
Si ergo habet, imo quia habet potestatem figulus luti tacere ex eadem massa, aliud quidem in honorem, aliud vero in contumeliam, o homo, tu quis es qui respondeas Deo, quia cujus vull miseretur et quem vult indurat? Sed priusquam ad hujusmodi conclusionem beatus Apostolus disputa tionis ordine perveniret, hoc potissimum de veteri bus litteris sumpsit exemplum , in quo indurationem quæ a Deo fieri dicitur, edoceret : Dicit, inquit, Scriptura Pharaoni : Quia in hoc ipsum excitavi te, ut ostendam in te virtutem meam, et ut annuntietur nomen meum in universa terra (Ibid., 17 ; Exod. IX, 16)).
If therefore the potter of the clay has—nay rather, because he has—the power out of the same mass to make one indeed unto honor, but another unto dishonor: O man, who art thou that repliest against God, because on whom He will He hath mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth? But before the blessed Apostle came, by the order of his disputation, to a conclusion of this kind, he took chiefly this example from the ancient writings, in which he might teach the hardening which is said to be done by God: 'The Scripture,' he says, 'saith to Pharaoh: For this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I may show in thee My power, and that My name may be announced in all the earth' (Rom. 9:17; Exod. 9:16).
15:19
But that God hardened his heart is stated most plainly in that same Scripture, when He spoke to Moses concerning the signs that were to be wrought through him upon the Egyptians. For thus He says: 'But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he may not let the people go' (Exod. IV, 21). Hereupon the cunning slanderer, vaunting himself as through an open breach, would weigh the justice of God according to his own judgment, and with all the outcry he can muster would answer: 'If He has mercy on whom He will, and hardens whom He will, why does He yet complain? For who resists His will?' To this man's arrogance let the Apostle reply: 'O man, who are you that answers back to God?' (Rom. IX, 19-20).
15:20
But whoever, seeking devoutly, desires to find something, let him read again that place of the same Scripture where the fire first appeared to Moses in the bush, and so kindled his heart with the ardor of divine love that in the sight of kings, as David says (Ps. CXVIII, 46), he might speak God's testimonies without confusion; and there he will find that all this, which affirms that God hardened Pharaoh's heart, pertains not to the working of God, but to His foreknowledge. For the Lord, speaking from the bush, says thus: 'But I know that Pharaoh king of Egypt will not let you go, except by a mighty hand. But I will stretch out My hand and strike the Egyptians with all My wonders which I shall do; and afterward Pharaoh king of Egypt will let you go' (Exod. III, 19-20).
15:21
Hæc pritna vox Dei est, qua futuram vo luntatem Pharaonis, sicut præviderat, indicat. Postea jam inter ipsos miraculorum imbres dixisse legitur : Ego autem indurabo cor Pharaonis, ne dimittat popu lum (Exod. iv, 21). Ubi jam aperte intelligitur pri mam iterasse sententiam.
This is the first utterance of God, by which He indicates the future will of Pharaoh, as He had foreseen it. Afterward, amid the very downpours of miracles, He is read to have said: 'But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he may not let the people go' (Exod. IV, 21). Here it is now plainly understood that He repeated His first sentence. For what does 'I will harden the heart' mean, except 'I will not soften it'? For it appears, with justice remaining upon some and grace flowing forth upon others, that the sentence of that Scripture was fulfilled, since God said to Pharaoh: 'For this very purpose I raised you up, that I might show My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth' (Exod. IX, 16).
15:22
For since God makes good use even of evil things—in the hardening of Pharaoh, in the plagues of Egypt, and in so many and so great miracles performed together and heaped upon that nation—what else was accomplished but that the power of God, great in itself, full in itself, might come to the knowledge of the human race, to profit not God, but those very people who read and believe? That Pharaoh was not to be changed, and that whole nation, which after so many blows still tried to pursue with arms and with war the people of God scarcely wrested from it—God foreknew this by that lofty light of His providence.
15:23
But He willed that the perishing of those about to perish should be a proof of salvation to the vessels of mercy predestined by Him, and used the ruin of some for the salvation of others; for 'the potter has power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor' (Rom. IX, 21). CHAP. VII. This judgment of the divine power in the election of men the blessed Apostle also, recalling it a little before, demonstrated by most forceful examples, when he spoke of Rebecca's offspring while yet within the womb, referring the whole to the grace of God. For thus he says:
15:24
Nunquid iniquitas apud Deum (Rom. IX, 10, 11, 12, 13; Gen. xxv, 23; Malac. i, 2)?
'But Rebecca also, having conceived by one act from Isaac our father, when they were not yet born, and had done nothing good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls, it was said to her that the elder shall serve the younger, as it is written: Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated'; and at once he added: 'What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God?' (Rom. IX, 10-13; Gen. XXV, 23; Mal. I, 2). And denying it, he answered: 'God forbid'—so that now all the rest which follows may be referred, held in suspense, to this sentence, and once referred be resolved, by which he denied that there is injustice with God. But what this aim of the apostolic argument here accomplished is quite abundantly clear.
15:25
For he compared not only brothers, but twins; not only twins, but those poured into the womb from one act of union: so that, since in those not yet born, nor having done anything, there could be no weight of merits, and not even from the parents' merits (which at different times could be various) could any obstacle be left standing against grace. For these parental merits, even if we grant that the divine protection may have turned away from the little ones or won favor for them, whether good or evil concerning the twin offspring—which was conceived in the same act of union and brought forth into the light at the same moment—must have been equal.
15:26
But if it is said that the divine judgment distinguished their future characters, surely that will be nullified which the Apostle set forth, saying: 'Not of works, but of Him who calls, it was said that the elder shall serve the younger.' For he did not say 'of past works,' but when he said generally 'not of works,' there he willed both past to be understood and future: past, that is, which were none, future, which were not yet. Jacob was predestined a vessel unto honor, because 'not of works, but of Him who calls, it was said, The elder shall serve the younger.' CHAP. VIII.
15:27
And lest perhaps the vessels predestined unto honor, ascribing something to their own strength, should deny the grace of the Creator, in another place the Apostle named them vessels of mercy, so that they might recognize whatever they were to be according to mercy. For thus the same Apostle also says elsewhere: 'And this not of yourselves; it is the gift of God' (Eph. II, 8). Blessed Moses too says to the people in Deuteronomy: 'And do not say in your heart, My strength and the might of my hand have gotten me this great power; but you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you strength to do valiantly, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers' (Deut. VIII, 17ff.). Likewise a little after, in the same place to them:
15:28
Ne dicas, inquit, in corde tuo, cum consumpserit Dominus Deus tuus gentes istas ante faciem tuam, di cens : Propter justitias meas induxit me Dominus hæ reditare terram bonam istam. Non propter justitiam tuam, neque propter sanctitatem cordis tui intras hæ reditare terram eorum, sed propter iniquitatem gentium istarum, Dominus disperdet eas a facie tua (Deut. IX, 4, 5).
'Do not say,' he says, 'in your heart, when the Lord your God has cast out these nations before your face, saying: For my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this good land. Not for your righteousness, nor for the holiness of your heart do you go in to possess their land, but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord will destroy them from before your face' (Deut. IX, 4-5). Behold how ancient a doctrine of the Holy Spirit—not only proclaimed in the apostolic writings, but also confirmed by the voice of the Holy Spirit in the prophetic writings and in the very beginnings of the people of Israel—the onslaught of new-fangled presumption strives to overturn.
15:29
Clare siquidem in uno atque eodem Scripturæ loco, bonitatem, et severitatem Dei propheta beatus ostendit, dicens, non propler justitias populi haereditatem terne illius reddi, sed gratia tantum miserantis donari, illos au tem propter injustitias suas pelli. Ecce in illis juste punitur inquitas, in istis gratis nulla justitia mune ratur.
For clearly, in one and the same place of Scripture, the blessed prophet shows both the goodness and the severity of God, saying that the inheritance of that land was rendered not for the people's righteousness, but bestowed only by the grace of Him who has mercy, while those others were driven out for their own injustices. Behold, in the former iniquity is justly punished; in the latter no righteousness is rewarded by grace. Nor did it suffice blessed Moses to have said that the inheritance of the land had been granted to the people of Israel not for their merits, unless he also added what he joined to it, whereby he might show them unworthy of every good. For there follows, after what we recalled above:
15:30
Et scies hodie quia non propter justitias tuas Dominus Deus tuus dat tibi terram istam bonam hæreditare, quoniam populus duræ cervicis es tu (Ibid., 6). Quis hic secundum debitum præcedentium meritorum mer cedem redditam dicat ? Quis non gratiam fateatur indebitam? Quotiens ait propheta : Tentaverunt eum in deserto (Psal. xciv, 9) ? Quotiens iracundiam Dei cordis aversione meruerunt, et salvavit eos propter misericordiam suam, ut notam faceret potentiam suam (Psal. cv, i, 8)? Hoc iterum Apostolus dicit : Sustinuit in multa patientia vasa iræ apta in interitum, ut ostenderet divitias suas in vasa misericordiæ, que præparavit in gloriam (Rom. IX, 22, 23). CAP. ix.
'And you shall know today that not for your righteousness does the Lord your God give you this good land to inherit, for you are a stiff-necked people' (Ibid., 6). Who here would say that a reward was rendered according to the debt of preceding merits? Who would not confess an undeserved grace? How often does the prophet say: 'They tempted Him in the desert' (Ps. XCIV, 9)? How often did they merit the wrath of God by the aversion of their heart, and yet He saved them for His mercy's sake, that He might make His power known (Ps. CV, 7-8)? This too the Apostle says: 'He endured with much patience the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, that He might show His riches upon the vessels of mercy which He prepared unto glory' (Rom. IX, 22-23). CHAP. IX.
15:31
But lest again man, dissolved into the utmost dregs of sloth, should believe that the steep path of virtue—which, even with the grace of God assisting, must be trodden only by labor—could be conferred upon him while idle, and should apply no diligence of labor to the endeavor of his own advancement, God, thus distributing the times and offices between Himself and man, ordained that by His calling we should take the beginnings of good things, but that once called and enlightened we should know the ways of His commandments by the understanding of a good disposition, and should either choose them or forsake them by free will. Yet these, if supported by His help we should follow with continual devotion, at the end He would again crown in us the obedience made subject, not resisting His commandments.
15:32
But the free will which we have from Him flows with a proneness slipping down toward wickedness, and, since it can do nothing toward the character of virtue when God's help withdraws, it stands fit and supported by strength for every kind of sin. For the law born in the members draws toward sin, and God, according to His justice, will forsake those who depart from the light yoke and easy burden of His commandments and, flowing away by the free will of a will loosed from righteousness, sink into the hardest bondage of sin.
15:33
But those who have received the gift of the calling with fitting piety, who are not subjugated to carnal enticements, who have been free from the vice of boasting, from the torches of avarice, from the wind of pride, and, as far as is in man, keeping the good things of God within themselves, have devoted all their zeal to spiritual exercises—these, as they strive in the contest of this life, He aids, and He bestows eternal crowns upon the victors: while again He forsakes the offenders, hardens the resisters, condemns the despisers. CHAP. X. Concerning the distribution of these degrees, which either God works in us, or bids us work in some measure, let us question Him from whose words arose the question which, if the Lord be present, we endeavor to unravel, so that in His meanings through diverse volumes

arranged indeed with varied expression, but with one and the same intention, if anything lies hidden in this place, it may be unlocked by the comparison of another sentence. That the Apostle Paul was called by God, we read either in that book where his deeds are narrated with all truth, or he himself confesses it in his Epistle, saying: 'Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle' (Rom. I, 1). And in the second place, having followed the calling, and having worked all that was in man, he himself says thus: 'I labored more than all of them' (1 Cor. XV, 10). But not attributing even this to himself, he added with anxious piety: 'Yet not I, but the grace of God with me' (Ibid.). Now then, both to him who was called and who followed the calling by works of righteousness, what else remained

Gratia Dei, inquit, per Jesum Christum Dominum no strum (Rom. VII, 24, 23).
except that, delivered from the body of this death, he might attain to the blessedness of that other life which was promised to all the saints by the mouth of Truth? That this is rendered by no human merits, but bestowed by the lavishing grace of God who gives, he himself answers, after the groans by which he had said: 'Wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? The grace of God,' he says, 'through Jesus Christ our Lord' (Rom. VII, 24-25).
15:36
Hanc itaque distributionem, qua diximus a Deo homines nullis existentibus meri- lis vocari, et vocatos, ut boni aliquid operentur, Dei adminiculis indigere, sumpto de veteribus litteris Apostolus monstrat exemplo, postquam illam de duo uus geminis electionem, omni repulsa laude merito rum, ad Dei gratiam judiciumque contulerat, videns quid impia posset blasphemare garrulitas, dixit : Numquid iniquitas est apud Deum (Rom. IX, 14) ? Et sequitur : Absit. Et quasi diceretur ei: Unde probas? parum putavit auctoritatem suae valere doctrinæ, nisi sententiam suam etiam legis doceret exemplo. Sic enim intelligi voluit quod Moyses dixerat :
This distribution, therefore, by which we have said that men are called by God with no merits existing, and that once called, in order to work some good, they need the supports of God, the Apostle demonstrates by an example drawn from the ancient writings, after he had, with all praise of merits repelled, referred that election of the two twins to the grace and judgment of God. Seeing what impious garrulity might blaspheme, he said: 'Is there injustice with God?' (Rom. IX, 14). And there follows: 'God forbid.' And as though it were said to him, 'Whence do you prove it?' he thought the authority of his teaching would avail too little unless he taught his sentence also by the example of the Law. For he willed thus to be understood what Moses had said:
15:37
'I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will show mercy to whom I will be merciful' (Exod. XXXIII, 19): so that we may believe that the first mercy is bestowed beforehand upon men in the calling, which alone does not suffice for right living, if He who called should forsake. And therefore it was added: 'And I will show mercy to whom I will be merciful,' so that it may be manifest to be received from God even those very works of mercy by which, when we seem to expend them, we merit God's mercy. For thus He says in the Gospel: 'Blessed are the merciful, for God will have mercy upon them' (Matt. V, 7). And had not the Apostle so understood it, he would never have taken care to insert this testimony for the good things in his argument on grace. CHAP. XI.—But if anyone is moved because not all

LXXX, 9).
—even of those who are already called—merit to attain to the second grace, that is, to the gift of right living, are moved, as the Lord says in the Gospel: 'Many are called, but few are chosen' (Matt. XX, 16): let him understand from this what sort of thing it is that he strives to defend against the grace of God, who flatters himself concerning free will. For whoever, having forsaken the gift of the divine calling, have flowed away again to impious perfidy—for those who forsake the grace of God, free will suffices to fulfill what they had willed. For the Psalmist saw how he might chant, by the truth of the prophetic spirit, that order of God's mercies which the Apostle interprets from the meaning of Moses: 'Hear, O My people,' he says, 'and I will testify to you' (Ps. LXXX, 9).
15:39
What did He wish them to hear, that He spoke with testimony? What indeed, but the commandments of life? As another prophet says: 'Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life' (Baruch III, 9). But what these commandments of life are the Psalmist adds and continues: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt' (Ps. LXXX, 11). And that these are the commandments of life the Lord shows by the exhortation with which He commended His disciples to the Father, saying: 'For this is eternal life, that they may know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent' (John XVII, 3). After this calling follows that which He both wills to pertain to the endeavors of men, and shows cannot be fulfilled without Himself:
15:40
for this is what the Apostle says: 'For it is God who works in us both to will and to accomplish, according to His good will' (Phil. II, 13). For from Him we have the will, because He calls and enlightens; from Him the accomplishing, because it belongs to us to strive after the good things which He also gave us to will. Nor did the Apostle without caution, when he had said, 'Because from Him we have both to will and to accomplish,' add 'according to His good will'; so that again and again they may see where they have, from the justice of God, that free will of which they boast. But that order by which the Lord distributes His diverse mercies by the dispensation of times, as the Apostle perceived Moses to have said, let us also see in the continued discourse of this psalm. For what does he say, after he had taught the called, saying:
15:41
'For I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.' 'Open wide your mouth,' He says, 'and I will fill it' (Ps. LXXX, 11). Here again something appears to have been reserved for man, which he ought to do through free will. For he is bidden to open wide his mouth, but God promises to fill it. Just as He had also said to His disciples in the Gospel: 'Do not be anxious how or what you shall speak. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you' (Matt. X, 19-20). This alone He referred to them, that they should willingly undertake every necessity of tribulation for the truth, but the effect He promised to lie with Himself.
15:42
What place then is reserved for free will, that without God's help, supported by rational dignity, it may accomplish whatever it has willed—if human nature does not suffice for itself, the Psalmist immediately shows: 'And My people did not hear My voice, and Israel did not heed Me' (Ps. LXXX, 12). He who had said, when He called, 'Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify to you'—what, testifying, had He commended to the minds of the hearers? 'I am the Lord your God.' What also had He bidden be done by those whom, delivered from the land of Egypt and from the darkness of ignorance, He had led out into the light of His commandments, in the splendor of the calling? 'Open wide,' He says, 'your mouth.'
15:43
Audiat Dei vocem in psalmo, de his quos deseruerat dicen tem : Et dimisi eos secundum desideria cordis eorum, ibunt in voluntatibus suis (Psal. LXXX, 13).
And at once, as though He said, 'If you should wish to open wide while I forsake you, it will profit nothing,' He thus added: 'and I will fill it.' What then does He who had called, and had taught the called, add in a complaining voice concerning them? 'And My people did not hear My voice,' He says, 'and Israel did not heed Me.' Let the defender of free will against God now come forth, let him hear the Apostle saying, when he spoke of his good labors: 'Yet not I, but the grace of God with me' (1 Cor. XV, 10). Let him hear the voice of God in the psalm, saying of those whom He had forsaken: 'And I let them go after the desires of their heart; they shall walk in their own devices' (Ps. LXXX, 13).
15:44
Let him hear one and the same Apostle attributing to himself only evils from the various times of his life, but to the grace of God all good things: 'Though I formerly was a blasphemer,' he says, 'and a persecutor' (1 Tim. I, 13). And in another place: 'By the grace of God I am what I am' (1 Cor. XV, 10). When he said, 'Though I formerly was a blasphemer and a persecutor,' no mention of grace was coupled with the wicked deed: because for it, as has been said, the nature of human freedom suffices unto wickedness. But when he spoke of the blessedness of the present life, he said: 'By the grace of God I am what I am.'
15:45
Et illum ordinem quo miseretur Deus vocando, miseretur deinceps in coeptis conatibus adjuvando, sicut serie psalmi narratum atque digestum est, beatus etiam apostolus Paulus continua narralione. servavit. Si enim in ordine quem posuit excerpta testimonia re legantur, ita loquitur; Gratia Dei, inquit, sum id quod sum. Hæc est prima miscricordia, quam liberæ vo luntatis opera consequuntur. Scd ut apostoli Pauli. vocationem bona opcra sequerentut, quid ait, Et gratia ejus in me vacua non fuit. Quid enim fecisti ? Plus. inquit, omnibus laboravi. Ne multum superbias, o liberi defensor arbilrii, audiens Paulum de suis la horibus gloriantem ;
而那神藉呼召施憐憫、其後又藉幫助所開始的努力施憐憫的次序——正如詩篇的序列中所述所排——蒙福的使徒保羅也在連續的敘述中加以保存。因為若按他所陳明的次序重讀那些摘錄的見證,他如此說:「我今日成了何等人,是蒙神的恩才成的。」這是第一種憐憫,自由意志的工乃隨從它。但為使善工跟從使徒保羅的呼召,他說了甚麼?「祂所賜我的恩不是徒然的。」你作了甚麼呢?他說:「我比眾人格外勞苦。」啊,自由意志的辯護者,聽見保羅誇他的勞苦,不要太過驕傲;
And that order by which God has mercy in calling, and thereafter has mercy in aiding the undertakings begun—as it was narrated and arranged in the series of the psalm—the blessed apostle Paul also preserved in a continuous narration. For if in the order which he set forth the excerpted testimonies be read again, he speaks thus: 'By the grace of God,' he says, 'I am what I am.' This is the first mercy, which the works of free will follow. But that good works might follow the calling of the apostle Paul, what does he say? 'And His grace in me was not in vain.' For what did you do? 'I labored more,' he says, 'than all of them.' Do not boast too much, O defender of free will, hearing Paul glorying in his labors;
15:46
attend to what follows: 'Yet not I, but the grace of God with me.' I think indeed that none of those who blaspheme against the grace of God with a heart exalted before ruin, as it is written (Prov. XVI, 18), will assume so much of shameless arrogance as to esteem himself either equal to the merits of the blessed prophet David, or even to be preferred to him. Of him—that I may for the moment be silent concerning that first recompense which no one would not confess to be undeserved, namely the kingdom bestowed upon him—let us weigh the intentions and affections of his prayers and confessions. For he himself defines in the psalm: 'Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord, and teach out of Your law' (Ps. XCIII, 12).
15:47
Sed videamus utrum ipsi jam eru dito, et omni legis scientia secundum instructionem ludaicam sufficienter instructo, ad beatitudinem res hæc sola suffecerit. Cur ergo rursus idem clamavit a d Dominum, Damini intellectum, et scrutabor legem tuam, et custodiam illam in toto corde meo (Psal. CXXVIII, 34)? Parum erat quod ad scrutandam legem poposcerat intellectum, nisi etiam ad custodiendam necessarium significaret auxilium, dicens, Et custo liam illam in toto corde meo; quasi diceret, Tunc ustodiam illam in toto corda meo, si tu dederis in tellectum. CAP. XII.
But let us see whether, to him already instructed and sufficiently trained in all knowledge of the law according to Jewish instruction, this alone sufficed for blessedness. Why then did the same man again cry to the Lord: 'Give me understanding, and I will search Your law, and I will keep it with my whole heart' (Ps. CXVIII, 34)? It was too little that he had begged understanding to search the law, unless he also signified the aid necessary for keeping it, saying: 'And I will keep it with my whole heart'; as though he said, 'Then I will keep it with my whole heart, if You give understanding.' CHAP. XII.
15:48
Adhuc superbus ille propriæ volunlatis defensor ad ista respondeat, quod propheta ad intel igendum tantum mandata divina, quæ tamen propria virtute impleturus fuerat,opem divini postulaverit auxiilii. Quæ si itasunt, a te paululum libet, beate Davidi sensuum tuorum occulta perquirere. Unde ergo, rogo te, pugna carnis et spiritus? Unde aposto licum, sicut ipse lateris, certamen? CXVIII, 57). Nam intellectu certe discernendae vanitatis a veritate, sicut poscebas accepto, cur oculos tuos a vanitate quæ displicet non avertis?
Let that proud defender of his own will still answer to these things, that the prophet begged the help of divine aid only for understanding the divine commandments, which nevertheless he was going to fulfill by his own strength. But if these things are so, I would like, blessed David, to search out a little from you the hidden things of your meanings. Whence then, I ask you, the conflict of flesh and spirit? Whence that apostolic struggle, as you yourself confess? Even indeed, enlightened and instructed by the gift of understanding which you had begged from God, you cry and say: 'Turn away my eyes, that they may not behold vanity' (Ps. CXVIII, 37). For with the understanding surely received, to discern vanity from truth, as you asked, why do you not turn your eyes away from the vanity which displeases?
15:49
If you reprove avarice, why do you not, separated from it by your own will, incline your heart to the commandments of salvation, but, as one weak in all things, cry to God: 'Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to avarice'—unless because the law of sin born in the members suggests avarice, and the holy man still wills his own eyes, nor can of himself turn them away; and thus the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh (Gal. V, 17): from which strife nothing delivers but grace, which through our Lord Jesus Christ is given to small and great (Rom. VII, 25). For to will is present with me, but to accomplish I do not find (Rom. VII, 18).
15:50
CAP. XIII. Uude ista in uno eodemque homine, qui ex anima et corpore constat, rerum voluntatum que diversitas , nisi quia jusla Dei judicia conleiti nens, homo Deum , creatura Creatorem , infimus summum, intra semetipsum inobedientiæ pœnas et contumaciam inferioris invenit?
Although the very willing is not of ourselves, but the gift of God, since from Him we have both to will and to accomplish, according to His good will (Phil. II, 13). Blessed therefore are you, since with the apostles of Christ you are in concord both in doctrine and in equality of the struggle: for both in your writings we recognize the wars of the apostles, and your contests we find in the apostolic writings. CHAP. XIII. Whence this diversity of things and of wills in one and the same man, who consists of soul and body, except because, holding fast the just judgments of God, man against God, the creature against the Creator, the lowest against the highest, finds within himself the penalties of disobedience and the contumacy of his inferior part?
15:51
Qua enim ju stitia, quamvis meliori deterior, creaturæ tamen creatura serviret, si ipsi qualiscupque creatura ser vire noluit Creatori ? Sed ne hoc quidem. sufficit ad poenam, ut pars illa deterior melioribus repugnaret cordis affectibus, nisi etiam plerumque superaret, in captivitatem duceret, possideret, non solum vel na tos in Adam homines, se l lex ipsa peccati ad motus sui ministerium vindicaret, nisi etiam renatos in Chri sto, manente suggestione, pulsaret. Quia revera per id regenerationismunus reatus dimissus est; non soluta conditio gratiae est, veterum delens chirogra ha debitorum ;
因為憑甚麼公義,即使較劣者順服較優者,受造物竟要服事受造物,倘若那無論何等的受造物不肯服事創造主呢?但這連作為刑罰也不夠——就是那較劣的部分抗拒心中較優的情感——除非它多半還勝過、擄掠、佔據,並且除非那罪律本身不僅索取在亞當裡出生的人來服事它自己的衝動,也在那引誘仍存之時,攻擊那些在基督裡重生的人。因為藉那重生的恩賜,罪責誠然得赦;恩典的境況並未消除,塗抹了舊日虧欠的字據;
For by what justice, though the worse be subject to the better, would the creature serve the creature, if the creature of whatever sort was unwilling to serve the Creator? But not even this suffices for punishment—that that worse part should resist the better affections of the heart—unless it also for the most part overcame, led into captivity, took possession, and unless the law of sin itself claimed for the service of its own motions not only men born in Adam, but also assailed, with the suggestion remaining, those reborn in Christ. For indeed through that gift of regeneration the guilt is remitted; the condition of grace is not dissolved, blotting out the ancient handwriting of debts;
15:52
not yet separating from carnal passion the man still living in the flesh, so that every man for the time to come may implore the divine aid one by one. And since the law could not so much take away sin as show it—that sin which men being born everywhere claimed for themselves, and possessed by the consent of concupiscence, plunged them into eternal destruction—our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Word of the Father, equal and coeternal with the Father, emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant (Phil. II, 7), and though He Himself was not sin, being made sin by the flesh He assumed, that with the flesh of man healed from sin He might condemn sin in the flesh, He came to seek what had perished (Luke XIX, 10).
15:53
sanare quod ægrotabat, erigere quod jacebat, potestatem habens dimittendi peccata, quod non debebat donare, quod ei debebatur dimittere. deletisque omnibus veteris culpæ maculis, quam fe cerat reparare naturam. De his quibus pœnam seve ritas justa decreverat, secundum ineffabilem disposi tionis occultæ misericordiam, elegit vasa quæ faceret in honorem , et alios a ventura ira dono gratuitæ vocationis absolvit, alios derelinquens ad æqualita tis judicium reservavit, nai tamen agnoscendæ vc ritatis abstulit facultatem : et ita plenitudo divina. præscientiæ in alios manante justitia, in alios gratia profluente completa est;
祂來醫治患病的,扶起跌倒的,有赦罪的權柄——賜下祂所不欠的,免去欠祂的——並且既塗抹了舊罪一切的污點,便修復祂所造的本性。論到那些公義的嚴厲已定其刑罰的人,祂照祂隱密安排那不可言喻的憐憫,揀選了要使之成為貴重的器皿,並藉白白呼召的恩賜使一些人脫離將來的忿怒,又撇下另一些人,將他們留給公平的審判,卻不奪去他們認識真理的能力:如此神聖預知的豐盛便得完成,公義存留於某些人身上,恩典湧流於另一些人身上;
to heal what was sick, to raise up what lay fallen, having power to forgive sins—to give what He did not owe, to remit what was owed to Him—and, all the stains of the old fault being blotted out, to restore the nature which He had made. Of those for whom just severity had decreed punishment, according to the ineffable mercy of His hidden disposition, He chose vessels which He would make unto honor, and released some from the wrath to come by the gift of a gratuitous calling, and, leaving others behind, reserved them for the judgment of equity, yet did not take away from them the faculty of acknowledging the truth: and thus the fullness of the divine foreknowledge was completed, justice remaining upon some, grace flowing forth upon others;
15:54
so that, with those perishing whom God had foreknown were to perish, and those being saved whom in that secret election He had foreknown were to be saved, the Church spread through the whole world might be multiplied. CHAP. XIV. Rejoice therefore, O whoever you are that have been enlightened, and acknowledge the grace which you did not merit. Groan, whoever you are that have been hardened, and confess His justice. Say, whoever you are that rejoice to have been washed from the original contagion by the laver of grace: 'The Lord is merciful and gracious, patient and of much mercy. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities' (Ps. CII, 8 and 10). Say, whoever you are that are condemned: 'You are just, O Lord, in all that You have done to us, and all Your judgments are true:
15:55
quin in veritate et judicio superinduxisti omnia hæc, propter peccatu no stra (Dan.
yea, in truth and judgment You have brought all these things upon us, because of our sins' (Dan. III, 27-28): and do not then ascribe the blame of your hardening to the injustice of God, for all the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth (Ps. XXIV, 10), so that neither those who have obtained mercy from God may glory, by the judgment of truth, in anything from their own merits; nor may those who are hardened and condemned believe that they can have from this an excuse of their fault, namely that they obtained no mercy by which they might be converted. This mercy, then, Pharaoh did not receive, and therefore free will sufficed him unto perishing—whom indeed no one so ignorant of the divine Scriptures will be, as to dare to say that he suffered all those things unjustly.
15:56
Or perhaps, if we think of God devoutly as is fitting, do we find that mercy was given even to Pharaoh? For the patience of God ought to have availed for his salvation, when, deferring the just and merited punishment, it heaped up frequent blows of miracles. Could he not, just as, when struck with scourges, he cast out the people, so, believing at the miracles, have acknowledged God of such great power? If it is said that Pharaoh could not be changed, because God had foreknown he was not to be changed, the answer is that God's foreknowledge does not compel a man to be such as God foreknew; but foreknows that he will be such as he will be, although God did not so make him. For if He compelled him to be, He would surely compel that which is not.
15:57
Unde Nabuchodonosor pœnitentiam me ruit fructuosam (Dan. IV, 33) ?
Further, if He had foreknown that to be future which is not, it would not be foreknowledge—which, how impiously it be said of God, everyone perceives who flatters himself in his sins on this ground, that God foreknew he would be a sinner. CHAP. XV. Nevertheless I think perhaps someone exists who may say that the way to salvation is less fitting, if, without being struck by any inward calling, yet someone is scourged. Whence did Nebuchadnezzar merit a fruitful repentance (Dan. IV, 33)? Did he not, after innumerable impieties, being scourged, repent, and receive again the kingdom which he had lost? But Pharaoh (Exod. VIII and following) was made harder by those very scourges, and perished.
15:58
Hic mihi rationem reddat qui divinum consilium nimium altum sapienti corde dijudicat, cur medica mentum unius medici confectum, alii ad interitum, alii valuerit ad salutem , nisi quia Christi bonus odor - aliis est odor vitæ in vitam, aliis odor mortis in mor tem (II Cor. II, io, 16)?
Here let him who judges the divine counsel—too deep for a wise heart—render me an account: why the medicine compounded by one physician availed for some unto destruction, for others unto salvation, except because the good fragrance of Christ is to some the fragrance of life unto life, to others the fragrance of death unto death (2 Cor. II, 15-16)? As to nature, both were men; as to dignity, both were kings; as to their cause, both were possessing a captive people of God; as to punishment, both were mercifully admonished by scourges. What then made their ends to be diverse, except that the one, perceiving the hand of God in the remembrance of his own iniquity, groaned, while the other fought with free will against the most merciful truth of God?
15:59
Hic quicunque respondet, illi ut mutaretur adfuisse divinum, huic ut induraretur defuisse præ sidium, et hoc contendit injustum, propter quod rerum ipsarum fines in Dei voluntate constituens, dixit Apostolus, Cujus vult miseretur, et quem vult indurat (Rom IX, 18), dicente Domino, Sine me ni hil potestis facere (Joan. xv, 5), intelligat illa omnia, vel adjuvante Domino perfici, vel deserente permitti, ut noverit tamen nolente Domino nihil prorsus ad. mitti. CAP. XVI.
To whoever answers here that divine aid was present to the one so that he might be changed, but that protection was lacking to the other so that he might be hardened, and who contends that this is unjust — because the Apostle, placing the outcomes of these very things in the will of God, said, 'He has mercy on whom he wills, and whom he wills he hardens' (Rom. 9:18), the Lord himself saying, 'Without me you can do nothing' (John 15:5) — let him understand that all those things are either brought to completion when the Lord helps, or permitted when he withdraws, so that he may nevertheless know that, when the Lord is unwilling, absolutely nothing is allowed to happen. CHAPTER XVI. But let us return to the little ones, let us return to the twins: too little is what I have said — let us return to those not yet born, who had been sown in the same act of conception and were to be brought forth into the light at the very same moment.
15:60
To them a discordant and diverse judgment of the divine will appears, and the greatness of the question troubles the minds of men who too proudly dispute concerning the will of God. Lift up your voice now with all your strength, O unjust accuser of the Just One, and tell me: what evil did that one commit, what good did he deserve? And there answers you — not I, but Paul the Apostle: 'Indeed neither of them deserved anything; but the potter has power over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour' (Rom. 9:21). You will say, 'Why? What is this so confused diversity of judgment?' Again let him refute this presumption and say, 'O man, who are you that you should answer God?' (Rom. 9:20) — especially because it pertains to this.
15:61
When intention is turned to a comparison of human deeds, the answer is that a creditor cannot be charged with injustice who, of two debtors, has willed to hold such a judgment that he forgives one and exacts from the other what is owed by both. And certainly in all the acts and contracts of human dealings, by which we seem to approve some form of justice in discerning and adjudicating a matter, it is manifest that this flows into the hearts of our lowliness out of the ineffable fullness of the divine justice — as blessed John confirms in his Gospel: 'Of his fullness we have all received' (John 1:16).
15:62
Quod si ita est, qua tandem impudentia homo de Deo, lutum de figulo judicabil, non solum dicens, Quid me fecisti sic? sed etiam de aliis damnabili curiositate perscrutans et dicens, Quare de eadem massa fecisti alium quidem sic, alium vero sic ? Si humanum genus, quod creatum primitus constat ex nihilo, non cum debita mortis et peccati origine nasceretur, et tamen ex eis Crea tor omnipotens in aeternum nonnullos damnare vellet inreritum , quis omnipotenti Crealori diceret, Qua re lecisli sic? Qui enim cum non essent, esse dona verat, quo iine essent habuit potestatem ;
但若真是如此,人到底憑甚麼無恥,竟判斷神,泥判斷窯匠——不僅說:「你為甚麼這樣造我呢?」甚至以當受咒詛的好奇心窺探別人的事,說:「你為甚麼從同一團泥中,把這一個造成這樣,把另一個造成那樣呢?」倘若人類——確知起初是從無中被造的——並非帶著死與罪應有的根源而生,而全能的創造者卻仍願將其中一些定罪,直到永遠的滅亡,誰能對全能的創造者說:「你為甚麼這樣行呢?」因為那位在他們不存在時賜他們存在的,就有權柄定他們存在到甚麼結局;
But if this is so, with what impudence, in the end, shall man judge concerning God, the clay concerning the potter — not only saying, 'Why have you made me thus?' but even, with damnable curiosity, prying into the affairs of others and saying, 'Why, out of the same lump, have you made one thus and another so?' If the human race, which is established to have been created at first out of nothing, were not born with the due origin of death and sin, and yet the omnipotent Creator willed to condemn some of them to everlasting destruction, who would say to the omnipotent Creator, 'Why have you done thus?' For he who had granted them to be when they were not, had the power to determine unto what end they should be;
15:63
nec dice rent cætri, cur paribus omnium meritis divinum discreparet arbitrium , quia potestatem habet figulus luti ex eadem massa facere, aliud quidem vas in ho norem, aliud vero in contumeliam (Rom. IX, 21).
nor would the rest say why, when the merits of all were equal, the divine decision should differ, since the potter has power over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour (Rom. 9:21). But now, when just punishment is rendered to the condemned, while undeserved grace is granted to the saved, who is so forgetful of the human condition as to sift the secrets of the divine mind — so that, having himself deservedly incurred punishment, he asks why another has received grace which was not owed to him? This divine election, then — that it is not rendered according to merits but bestowed on men by the sole beneficence of the will — Moses showed even then, though he was teaching a carnal people. For thus
15:64
clearly says to the people in Deuteronomy: 'Behold, the heaven belongs to the Lord your God, and the heaven of heavens, the earth and all that is in it; nevertheless the Lord chose your fathers to love them, and chose their seed after them, even you, above all nations.' And he added: 'Circumcise therefore the hardness of your heart, and stiffen your neck no more' (Deut. 10:14–16). But that this hardness of heart remained in them, as we have already said above, blessed Stephen showed when he rebuked the Jews. For in the Acts of the Apostles, as he himself says, 'You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit' (Acts 7:51).
15:65
Whence comes the stiff neck in that people which was chosen out of the whole world, which by ten miracles was granted deliverance from slavery, to which the Law was given, for whose salvation the mouths of all the prophets served, from which Christ was made according to the flesh, and to whom he was sent — unless because blindness has come upon part of Israel, until Israel, adopted, should enter into the kingdom out of the fullness of the Gentiles (Rom. 11:25); and the Lord shut up all in unbelief, that all might stand in need of the mercy of the Saviour?
15:66
Touching upon the mysteries of this divine counsel and the secret of its majesty — which, though he knew them through the greatness of the revelations, yet, sinking beneath them because of human weakness, even he who for persecutions and blasphemies deserved to be named the Vessel of Election — marvelling, cries out: 'O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!' (Rom. 11:33), confessing his ways to be unsearchable and the judgments of God past finding out.
15:67
With him, therefore, when such matters are asked, let us marvel; and, the sentence standing firm that there is no iniquity with God, if there be anything that is asked which surpasses the measure of our understanding, and does not deign to fit within the narrowness of our intellect, let us confess, with unshaken equity, that it abides in that fullness of the divine justice, mercy, and foreknowledge. Lest, disputing about the higher secrets of the divine will otherwise than the measure of our condition permits, we should abandon the justice of God, and, desiring to establish our own, fall into the lowest abyss of obstinacy.
