25:1
I. What is the state of faith, what the reason of truth, what the prescript of discipline that, among the rest of the world's errors, takes away also the pleasures of the spectacles — servants of God, learn; you who are just now approaching to God, recognize it; you who have already testified and confessed that you have approached, that no one may sin either by ignorance or by dissimulation. For so great is the force of the pleasures that it both protracts ignorance into an occasion and corrupts conscience into dissimulation. Toward both, perhaps, the opinions of the heathen may still flatter someone, who in this cause have been wont thus to argue against us:
25:2
that such great solaces from without, of the eyes or ears, in no way clash with religion in the mind and conscience; and that God is not truly offended by man's delight, in which, with fear toward God preserved and His honor kept in its own time and its own place, to take enjoyment is no crime. But precisely this is what we are just now preparing to demonstrate — how such things do not accord with true religion and true obedience toward the true God. There are those who suppose that Christians, a race ready for death, are trained to this obstinacy by the renunciation of pleasures, so that they may the more easily despise life, its retaining-cords being as it were cut away, and may not long for what they have already made superfluous to themselves — so that this may be thought defined rather by such counsel and human foresight, not by divine prescript.
25:3
It irked them, forsooth, that even while persevering amid such great pleasures we should die for the Lord. And yet, even if it were so, so fitting a counsel deserved obedience for so great an obstinacy of discipline. II. But now there is no one who does not also put forward this too: that all things were instituted by God and assigned to man, as we proclaim, and certainly all good things, as coming from a good Author; that among these are to be reckoned all those things from which the spectacles are furnished — the horse, for example, and the lion, and bodily strength, and sweetness of voice; therefore that what consists of His own creation can seem neither alien nor hostile to God, nor is to be reckoned to God's worshippers as hostile to Him, since it is not alien.
25:4
Plainly even the very buildings of the places — the stones, the cement, the marbles, the columns — are God's things, who gave them for the equipment of the earth; but the very acts too are transacted under God's heaven. How wise an arguer human ignorance seems to itself, especially when it fears to lose something of the sort out of the joys and fruits of the world! In fine, you will find more whom the peril of pleasure than of life calls away from this sect. For even the fool does not dread death as a debt, and even the wise man does not despise pleasure as a thing given, since to fool and wise alike there is no other charm of life but pleasure.
25:5
No one denies, because no one is ignorant of what nature itself spontaneously suggests, that God is the Creator of the universe, and that this universe is as good as it is delivered over to man. But because they do not know God thoroughly except by natural right, not also by intimate right — from afar, not from near — it is necessary that they be ignorant how He either commands or forbids the administering of the things He instituted, and likewise what force there is, rival from the opposite side, for adulterating the uses of the divine creation; for you can know neither the will nor the adversary of Him whom you know less. Not only, then, is regard to be had to Him by whom all things have been instituted, but also to him by whom they have been turned aside. For thus it will appear for what use they were instituted, if it appears for what they were not.
25:6
There is a great difference between corruption and integrity, because there is a great difference between the institutor and the interpolator. Moreover, all the species of evils, which even the heathen both prohibit and guard against as undoubted, consist of the works of God. You see murder accomplished by iron, by poison, by magical bindings: iron is as much a thing of God as herbs, as angels. Did He, however, provide these things for the slaying of a man? Nay, He does away with every species of murder by one and principal precept: "You shall not kill." Likewise gold, bronze, silver, ivory, wood, and whatever material is caught up for the fabricating of idols — who placed it in the world but God the Author of the world? Was it, however, that these things might be adored against Himself?
25:7
And yet the highest offense in His sight is idolatry. What is not God's that offends God? But when it offends, it has ceased to be God's, and when it has ceased, it offends. Man himself, the author of all disgraceful deeds, is not only the work of God but also His image; and yet both in body and in spirit he has revolted from his Institutor. For neither did we take eyes for concupiscence, and the tongue for evil-speaking, and the ears for the reception of evil-speaking, and the gullet for the crime of gluttony, and the belly for fellowship with gluttony, and the genitals for the excesses of unchastity, and the hands for violence, and the steps for a wandering life; nor was the spirit therefore implanted in the body that it should become a workshop of ambushes, of frauds, of iniquities. I think not.
25:8
For if the God who exacts innocence hates all malignity, and if only excogitated wickedness, undoubtedly whatever He founded it is certain He did not found unto the outcome of those works which He condemns, although those same works be administered through the things He founded, since this is the whole reason of condemnation: the perverse administration of the creation by the creatures. We, therefore, who, the Lord being known, have also inspected His rival, who, the Institutor being discovered, have detected the interpolator along with Him, ought neither to wonder nor to doubt:
25:9
since that force of the interpolating and rivaling angel from the beginning cast down man himself — the work and image of God, the possessor of the whole universe — from his integrity, it likewise, together with him, changed into perversity the whole of his substance, which had been established in integrity along with him, against the Institutor; so that, what it grieved to have been granted to man and not to itself, in that very thing it might both make man guilty before God and set up its own dominion. III. Instructed with this consciousness against the opinion of the heathen, let us rather turn to the cavils of our own people.
25:10
For the faith of some, being either too simple or too scrupulous, demands authority from the Scriptures for this renunciation of the spectacles, and sets itself in uncertainty, because such abstinence is not denounced to the servants of God significantly and by name. Plainly nowhere do we find, in the manner in which it is openly laid down: "You shall not kill, you shall not worship an idol, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not admit fraud," so expressly defined: you shall not go into the circus, you shall not behold the theater, the contest, the gladiatorial show. But we do find that first utterance of David pertains to this species as well:
25:11
'Blessed is the man,' he says, 'who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the pestilent.' For although he seems to have pronounced that man righteous because he took no part in the council and assembly of the Jews who were plotting to put the Lord to death, yet divine Scripture is always distributed in a broad sense, so that wherever, according to the sense of the present matter, discipline too is fortified, this passage also may not be a voice foreign to the prohibition of the spectacles. For if it then called those few Jews a council of the ungodly, how much more so great a gathering of the heathen people? Are the heathen less ungodly, less sinners, less enemies of Christ than the Jews were then? And what of this, that the rest also fits:
25:12
For at the spectacles one sits in the seat and stands in the way; for they call the passages and the divisions of the tiers, running around, 'ways,' and the sloping partitions of the seats for the common people 'hinges'; and the place set for sitting in the curve is likewise called a 'seat.' And so, on the contrary, 'unhappy is he who has gone into whatever council of the ungodly, and stood in whatever way of sinners, and sat in whatever seat of the pestilent.' Let us understand a thing said generally, when it also admits of being interpreted specifically in some other way. For certain things pronounced specifically also have a general savour. When God admonishes the Israelites in discipline or rebukes them, he certainly means it for all; when he threatens destruction to Egypt and Ethiopia, he certainly gives judgment beforehand against every sinful nation.
25:13
Thus every sinful nation is 'Egypt and Ethiopia' from the particular to the general, just as likewise every spectacle is 'a council of the ungodly' from the general to the particular. IV. Lest anyone think that we are quibbling, I will turn to the paramount authority of our own seal. When, entering the water, we profess the Christian faith in the words of its law, we testify with our own mouth that we have renounced the devil, and his pomp, and his angels. What will be the chief and foremost thing in which the devil, his pomp, and his angels are reckoned, but idolatry? From which every unclean and wicked spirit, so to speak—but I say no more of this.
25:14
Therefore, if it be established that the whole apparatus of the spectacles consists of idolatry, it will undoubtedly be prejudged that our testimony of renunciation in the laver pertains also to the spectacles, which are made over to the devil and his pomp and his angels—namely, through idolatry. We shall record the origins of each, in what cradles they grew up in the world; then the titles by which they are named; then the equipment with which they are furnished in their superstitions; then the places, to what patrons they are dedicated; then the arts, to what authors they are ascribed. If any of these should not pertain to an idol, it will pertain neither to idolatry nor to our abjuration.
25:15
V. As to origins indeed, since they are rather obscure and unknown to most of our own people, they had to be investigated at deeper level and from no other source than the records of pagan literature. There exist many authors who have published commentaries on this subject. By these the origin of the games is thus handed down: Timaeus relates that the Lydians, immigrants from Asia, settled in Etruria under the leadership of Tyrrhenus, who had yielded to his brother in a contest for the throne. So then in Etruria, among the other rites of their superstitions, they instituted spectacles also under the name of religion. Thence the Romans, having sent for the performers, borrowed them, and likewise the name, so that the players (ludii) were called after the Lydians.
25:16
sed etsi Varro ludios a ludo id est a lusu interpretatur, sicut et Lupercos ludios appellabant, quod ludendo discurrant, tamen eum lusum iuvenum et diebus festis et templis et religionibus reputat. nihil iam de caussa vocabuli, cum rei caussa idololatria sit. nam et cum promiscue ludi Liberalia vocarentur, honorem Liberi patris manifeste sonabant. Libero enim a rusticis primo fiebant ob beneficium quod ei adscribunt demonstrata gratia vini. exinde ludi Consualia dicti, qui initio Neptunum honorabant. eundem enim et Consum vocant. dehinc Ecurria ab equis Marti Romulus dixit;
但即便瓦羅把「ludii」解作源於「ludus」,即源於「遊戲」,正如他們也稱盧佩爾奇為「ludii」,因為他們一邊嬉戲一邊奔跑,然而他仍認為年輕人的那種嬉戲是屬於節慶日、廟宇和宗教的。關於名稱的緣由不必再多說,因為事情本身的緣由就是偶像崇拜。因為當這些遊藝被不加區別地稱為「利柏爾節」(Liberalia)時,它們顯然是在宣揚對利柏爾父神的敬奉。因為這些遊藝起初是鄉民為利柏爾而舉行的,是為了他們歸功於他的恩惠,因為據說是他揭示了葡萄酒的美好。此後又有稱為「孔蘇斯節」(Consualia)的遊藝,起初是敬奉涅普頓的;因為他們也稱他為孔蘇斯。接著羅慕路斯以馬命名「馬祭」(Ecurria),奉獻給瑪爾斯;
But even though Varro derives 'ludii' from 'ludus,' that is, from 'play,' just as they also called the Luperci 'ludii' because they ran about while playing, yet he reckons that play of the young men as belonging to festal days and temples and religions. No more, now, of the reason for the name, since the reason for the thing itself is idolatry. For also, when the games were indiscriminately called Liberalia, they plainly proclaimed honour to Father Liber. For to Liber they were first made by the country-folk, on account of the benefit which they ascribe to him, the discovery having shown the grace of wine. Thereafter the games were called Consualia, which at the beginning honoured Neptune; for they call him also Consus. Next Romulus named the Ecurria from horses, in honour of Mars;
25:17
although they claim the Consualia too for Romulus, on the ground that he dedicated them to Consus, the god, as they will have it, of counsel—that counsel, namely, by which he then devised the rape of the Sabine virgins into marriages for his soldiers. A worthy counsel indeed, and even now among the Romans themselves held just and lawful—not to say in the sight of God! For this too contributes to the stain of its origin, that you should not deem good what took its beginning from evil, from shamelessness, from violence, from hatred, from a founder who was a fratricide, from a son of Mars. And even now the altar to that Consus is sunk in the ground in the circus at the first turning-posts, with an inscription of this kind: CONSUS IN COUNSEL, MARS IN WAR, THE LARES MIGHTY IN... The public priests sacrifice at it on the Nones of July, and on the twelfth day before the Kalends of

the September Kalends, the Quirinal flamen and the Virgins sacrifice there. Next this same Romulus instituted games to Jupiter Feretrius on the Tarpeian Hill, which Piso records were called both Tarpeian and Capitoline. After him Numa Pompilius made games to Mars and Robigo (for they even fashioned a goddess of mildew); next Tullus Hostilius, then Ancus Marcius, and the rest. Who instituted games, and which, in what order, and to what idols, is set down in Suetonius Tranquillus, or in those from whom Tranquillus received it. But these things will suffice as to the charge of idolatry regarding origin. VI. To the testimony of antiquity there is added the posterity that followed, displaying the pattern of the origin in the titles of this later time also, whereby it was marked out to what idol and to what superstition the games of either kind were assigned.
25:19
Megalenses enim et Apollinares, item Cereales et Neptunales et Latiares et Florales in commune celebrantur, reliqui ludorum de natalibus et sollemnibus regum et publicis prosperitatibus et municipalibus festis superstitionis causas habent. inter quos etiam privatorum memoriis legatariae editiones parentant, id quoque secundum institutionis antiquitatem. nam et a primordio bifariam ludi censebantur, sacri et funebres id est deis nationum et mortuis. sed de idololatria nihil differt apud nos, sub quo nomine et titulo, dum ad eosdem spiritus perveniat, quibus renuntiamus. licebit mortuis, licebit deis suis faciant, perinde mortuis suis ut diis faciunt;
因為梅伽倫節、阿波羅節,同樣還有刻瑞斯節、涅普頓節、拉提烏斯節和佛羅拉節,都是公眾共同慶祝的;其餘的遊藝則以君王的誕辰和大典、公眾的興盛、以及地方的迷信節慶為緣由。在這些之中,甚至有為紀念私人而由遺囑指定舉辦的表演,作追悼之禮——這也是按照制度的古老慣例。因為從一開始,遊藝就被劃分為兩類:神聖的與喪葬的,也就是獻給列邦諸神的和獻給死者的。但就偶像崇拜而言,對我們來說,它以什麼名稱和名目出現並無分別,只要它抵達的是我們所棄絕的同一批邪靈。讓他們為死者行此事,讓他們為自己的神明行此事吧——他們為死者所行的,正如為神明所行的一樣;
For the Megalensian and Apollinarian games, likewise the Cerealian and Neptunalian and Latiarian and Floralian, are celebrated in common; the rest of the games have their occasions in the birthdays and solemnities of kings, in public prosperities and municipal festivals of superstition. Among these, even the legated exhibitions perform funeral rites for the memory of private persons—that too according to the antiquity of the institution. For from the very beginning the games were reckoned of two kinds, sacred and funereal, that is, to the gods of the nations and to the dead. But as regards idolatry it makes no difference with us under what name and title it comes, so long as it arrives at the same spirits whom we renounce. Let them do it for the dead, let them do it for their own gods—they do it for their dead just as for gods;
25:20
one condition belongs to both parties, one idolatry, one renunciation of ours against idolatry. VII. Common, therefore, is the origin of the games of both kinds, common too their titles, as arising from common causes. Accordingly, they must of necessity have their equipment in common, in respect of the general guilt of the idolatry that founded them. But the display of the circus is somewhat more pompous, to which this very name properly belongs: the procession that goes before, proving of itself whose it is by the series of images, by the train of figures, by the chariots, by the sacred cars, by the wagon-thrones, by the litters, by the crowns, by the spoils.
25:21
quanta praeterea sacra, quanta sacrificia praecedant, intercedant, succedant, quot collegia, quot sacerdotia, quot officia moveantur, sciunt homines illius urbis, in qua daemoniorum conventus consedit. ea si minore cura per provincias pro minoribus viribus administrantur, tamen omnes ubique circenses illuc deputandi, unde et petuntur, inde inquinantur, unde sumuntur. nam et rivulus tenuis ex suo fonte et surculus modicus ex sua fronde qualitatem originis continet. viderit ambitio sive frugalitas eius, quod deum offendit qualiscumque pompa circi: etsi pauca simulacra circumferat, in uno idololatria est; etsi unam tensam trahat, Iovis tamen plaustrum est;
此外,有多少聖禮、多少祭祀在前引、在中間穿插、在後跟隨;有多少祭司團、多少祭司職、多少職務被調動起來——那座城的人知道,那城中已有群魔的聚會坐鎮。這些事縱使在各行省因資源較少而以較不講究的方式舉辦,然而各地一切競技場遊藝仍必須歸算於它們被尋求的那個源頭;它們從何處而來,就從何處被玷污;它們從何處被取用,就從何處被沾染。因為即便是從自己泉源流出的細小溪流、從自己枝條長出的微小嫩枝,也保留了其起源的性質。讓人去操心它的鋪張或節儉吧:無論競技場的排場如何,它都冒犯了神。即使它只抬著少數偶像,在其一之中就有偶像崇拜;即使它只拉著一輛聖車,那也仍是朱庇特的車輦;
Moreover, how many sacred rites, how many sacrifices go before, come between, follow after; how many colleges, how many priesthoods, how many offices are set in motion—the men of that city know it, in which the assembly of demons has taken its seat. Even if these things are administered with less care throughout the provinces, according to their lesser resources, yet all circus-games everywhere must be reckoned to that source whence they are also sought; from that source they are defiled, from which they are taken. For even a slender rivulet from its own spring, and a modest twig from its own bough, retains the quality of its origin. Let one see to the ostentation or the frugality of it: whatever the pomp of the circus be, it offends God. Even if it carries about few images, in one there is idolatry; even if it draws one sacred car, it is still the wagon of Jupiter;
25:22
any idolatry whatsoever, whether meanly furnished or moderately rich and splendid, is guilty by the reckoning of its own crime. VIII. That I may deal also with the places according to my plan: the circus is principally consecrated to the Sun. His temple stands in the middle of the space, and his image shines forth from the summit of the temple, since they did not think that he ought to be consecrated under a roof whom they have in the open sky. They affirm that the spectacle was first exhibited by Circe to the Sun her father, as they will have it, and from her they argue for the very name of the 'circus.' Clearly the sorceress transacted this business for them under this name, whose priestess she was—namely, for demons and angels. How many idolatries, then, do you recognize in the arrangement of that place? Each single ornament of the circus is a single temple.
25:23
ova honori Castorum adscribunt qui illos ovo editos credendo de cygno Iove non erubescunt. delphines Neptuno vomunt, columnae Sessias a sementationibus, Messias a messibus, Tutulinas a tutela fructuum sustinent; ante eas tres arae trinis deis parent, Magnis Potentibus Valentibus. eosdem Samothracas existimant. obelisci enormitas, ut Hermateles affirmat, Soli prostituta. scriptura eius unde eius et census: de Aegypto superstitio est. frigebat daemonum concilium sine sua Matre Magna; ea itaque illic praesidet euripo. Consus, ut diximus, apud metas sub terra delitescit Murcias. eas quoque idolum fecit: Murciam enim deam amoris volunt, cui in illa parte aedem voverunt.
The eggs they ascribe to the honour of the Castors—those who, believing the twins to have been hatched from an egg by Jupiter in the form of a swan, are not ashamed. The columns spew forth dolphins to Neptune, and support statues of the Sessiae from sowings, of the Messiae from harvests, of the Tutulinae from the guardianship of the crops; before these, three altars serve three gods, the Great, the Mighty, the Strong. These same they reckon to be the Samothracian gods. The huge obelisk, as Hermateles affirms, is prostituted to the Sun; its inscription, whence also its provenance, is a superstition out of Egypt. The council of demons would be chilly without their own Great Mother; she therefore presides there over the channel-basin. Consus, as we have said, lurks underground at the turning-posts of the Murcian goddess. Her too they made an idol: for they will have Murcia to be a goddess of love, to whom they vowed a temple in that quarter.
25:24
Take note, Christian, how many unclean names have possessed the circus. Foreign to you is the region which so many spirits of the devil have occupied. As to places, indeed, there is occasion for reconsidering, so as to forestall the question of certain persons. 'What then,' you say, 'if at another time I go to the circus, shall I be in danger of defilement?' There is no prohibition regarding places. For not only these meeting-places of the spectacles, but even the temples themselves, the servant of God may enter without peril to his discipline, if there be an urgent cause—provided only it be a simple one, which does not pertain to the proper business or function of that place. Besides, the streets and the forum and the baths and the inns and even our own houses are not altogether without idols: the whole world Satan and his angels have filled.
25:25
Yet not because we are in the world do we fall away from God, but only if we touch something of the world's crimes. Accordingly, if as a sacrificer or worshipper I have entered the Capitol or the Serapeum, I shall fall away from God, just as I shall as a spectator at the circus or the theatre. The places do not contaminate us of themselves, but the things done in them, by which the very places also are contaminated, as we have argued: by contaminated things we are contaminated. And for this reason we recall to what powers such places are dedicated, that we may show them to belong to those whose actions are done in those places, to whom the places themselves are dedicated. IX. Now as to the craft by which the circus-games are exhibited. Horsemanship of old was a simple thing: it was practised on the horse's back, and its common use was certainly not culpable.
25:26
But when it was pressed into the service of the games, it passed over from being a gift of God to being the ministry of demons. And so this kind of thing is assigned to Castor and Pollux, to whom Stesichorus teaches that horses were distributed by Mercury. But Neptune too is an equestrian, whom the Greeks call Hippios. The chariot-yoke, moreover, they consecrated to Jupiter, the four-horse team to the Sun, the two-horse team to the Moon. But it was also Erichthonius who first 'dared to yoke a chariot and four horses and, victorious, to stand upon its swift wheels.' Erichthonius, son of Minerva and Vulcan—and that indeed from a lust fallen to the earth—is a demonic monstrosity, nay, the devil himself, not a snake. But if Trochilus of Argos is the inventor of the chariot, he dedicated that work of his to Juno first.
25:27
If at Rome Romulus first displayed the four-horse chariot, I suppose that he too has been enrolled among the idols, if he is the same as Quirinus. With such founders, the four-horse teams having been brought forth, they deservedly clothed the charioteers too in the colours of idolatry. For at the beginning there were only two, the white and the red. The white was vowed to winter on account of its white snows, the red to summer on account of the redness of the sun. But afterwards, as pleasure no less than superstition advanced, some consecrated the red to Mars, others the white to the Zephyrs; the green to Mother Earth or to spring, the blue to Sky and Sea or to autumn. Since, however, every kind of idolatry has been condemned by God, that too is certainly condemned which is profaned by reference to the elements of the world.
25:28
X. Let us pass on to the matters of the stage, whose origin we have already shown to be common and their titles equal, according to that very naming of the games from the beginning, and their administration conjoined with the equestrian affair. Their equipment too is a partner from that side, in that one goes to the stage from the temples and altars, and from that wretchedness of incense and blood, amid flutes and trumpets, under the direction of two most filthy managers of funerals and sacred rites, the master of ceremonies and the soothsayer. Thus, since from the origins of the games we crossed over to the circus-games, from there we shall now direct our course to the games of the stage, on account of the vice of the place. The theatre is properly the sanctuary of Venus. This, in fact, was the manner in which that kind of work made its way in the world.
25:29
nam saepe censores nascentia cum maxime theatra destruebant moribus consulentes, quorum scilicet periculum ingens de lascivia providebant, ut iam hinc ethnicis in testimonium cedat sententia ipsorum nobiscum faciens et nobis in exaggerationem disciplinae etiam humana praerogativa. itaque Pompeius Magnus solo theatro suo minor cum illam arcem omnium turpitudinum extruxisset, veritus quandoque memoriae suae censoriam animadversionem Veneris aedem superposuit et ad dedicationem edicto populum vocans non theatrum, sed Veneris templum nuncupavit, cui subiecimus, inquit, gradus spectaculorum. ita damnatum et damnandum opus templi titulo praetexuit et disciplinam superstitione delusit.
For the censors often used to destroy the theatres precisely as they were rising, consulting for morals, foreseeing, that is, the enormous peril from wantonness—so that even from this the very judgment of the heathen may come in for testimony on our side, and a human prerogative too may serve us for the heightening of discipline. And so Pompey the Great, less great only than his own theatre, when he had built that citadel of all vileness, fearing at some time the censorial censure of his memory, superimposed a temple of Venus, and, summoning the people by edict to its dedication, called it not a theatre but a temple of Venus, 'beneath which,' he said, 'we have placed the tiers of the spectacles.' Thus he cloaked a condemned and condemnable work under the title of a temple, and mocked discipline by means of superstition.
25:30
But it suits both Venus and Liber. These two demons of drunkenness and lust are in conspiracy and sworn league with each other. And so the theatre of Venus is also the house of Liber. For they used properly to call other stage-games Liberalia too, besides those devoted to Liber, which are the Dionysia among the Greeks, and were instituted by Liber. And plainly, in the stage-arts too, there is the patronage of Liber and of Venus. Those things which are peculiar and proper to the stage—the effeminacy of gesture and bending of the body—they sacrifice to Venus and Liber, the ones dissolute through sex, the others through luxury. But those things which are performed by voice and modulations and instruments and letters have the Apollos and Muses and Minervas and Mercuries as their masters.
25:31
You will hate, O Christian, those whose authors you cannot but hate. Now, indeed, we wish to bring in a word about the arts and about those whose authors we execrate in their very names. We know that the names of the dead are nothing, just as their images too are nothing; but we are not ignorant who it is that works under those names and instituted images, and rejoices, and feigns divinity—wicked spirits, namely, demons. We see, therefore, that their arts too are dedicated to the honours of those who inhabit the names of their authors, and are not free from idolatry, whose founders are for that very reason accounted gods.
25:32
Nay, as far as concerns the arts, we ought to have laid down at a deeper level that the demons, from the beginning providing for themselves among the other pollutions of idolatry those of the spectacles also—by which they might call man away from the Lord and bind him to their own honour—inspired the very talents of arts of this kind. For neither would that have been procured by others which was to come to them, nor would they then have brought it forth through other men than through those in whose names and images and histories they established the deceit of consecration, meaning to transact their own business thereby. That the sequence may be carried through, let us enter also upon the review of the athletic contests. XI. Their origin is derived from their kinship with the games. Hence these too are instituted as either sacred or funereal, and are performed either to the gods of the nations or to the dead. Their titles are likewise:
25:33
the Olympian games to Jupiter, which at Rome are the Capitoline; likewise the Nemean to Hercules, the Isthmian to Neptune; the rest are various contests for the dead. What wonder, then, if idolatry befouls even the equipment of the contests—with its profane crowns, its priestly presidents, its ministers of the colleges, and finally with the very blood of oxen? And that I may supply something from the place too, and from a common consideration, on behalf of the college of the arts of the Muses and of Minerva and of Apollo, and also of Mars, they rival the circus in the stadium through combat, through the trumpet—which is likewise itself the temple of that very idol whose solemnities it performs. But the gymnastic arts too the disciplines of the Castors and the Herculeses and the Mercuries handed down. XII. There remains the review of that most notorious and most popular of spectacles.
25:34
munus dictum est ab officio, quoniam officium etiam muneris nomen est. officium autem mortuis hoc spectaculo facere se veteres arbitrabantur, posteaquam illud humaniore atrocitate temperaverunt. nam olim, quoniam animas defunctorum humano sanguine propitiari creditum erat, captivos vel mali status servos mercati in exequiis immolabant. postea placuit impietatem voluptate adumbrare. itaque quos paraverant, armis quibus tunc et qualiter poterant eruditos, tantum ut occidi discerent, mox edicto die inferiarum apud tumulos erogabant. ita mortem homicidiis consolabantur. haec muneri origo.
It is called a 'munus' (duty/gift) from 'officium' (office), since 'office' is also a name for a 'munus.' Now the ancients thought that they were performing an office to the dead by this spectacle, after they had tempered it with a more humane atrocity. For of old, since it was believed that the souls of the departed were propitiated by human blood, they used to sacrifice at the funeral rites captives, or slaves of poor condition whom they had bought. Afterwards it seemed good to overshadow impiety with pleasure. And so those whom they had prepared, trained in such arms as then and in such manner as they could—but only that they might learn to be slain—they used, on the appointed day of the funeral offerings, to dispatch at the tombs. Thus they consoled death with homicides. This is the origin of the gladiatorial munus.
25:35
But little by little they advanced to as great a refinement as their cruelty, since satisfaction was not made to the pleasure of the wild beasts unless human bodies too were torn to pieces by the beasts. What, therefore, was offered as an expiation to the dead was certainly reckoned to the funeral rite; which kind is likewise idolatry, since idolatry too is a kind of funeral offering: both the one and the other minister to the dead. And in the idols of the dead the demons take up their abode.
25:36
That I may consider the titles too: although this kind of exhibition has passed from the honours of the dead to the honours of the living—I mean quaestorships and magistracies and flaminates and priesthoods—yet, since the dignity of the name is held by the crime of idolatry, it necessarily follows that whatever is administered in the name of a dignity should share also the stains of that from which it has its origins. The same we shall interpret concerning the equipment to be reckoned in the display of these very honours: that the purple, the fasces, the fillets, the crowns, and finally the assemblies and edicts and the day-before banquets, are not without the pomp of the devil, not without the invitation of demons. What, then, shall I say by way of peroration about that horrid place, which even perjuries cannot endure?
25:37
For the amphitheatre is consecrated to more and harsher names than the Capitol: it is the temple of all the demons. As many unclean spirits take their seats there as it holds men. And that I may conclude also concerning the arts, we know Mars and Diana to be the presidents of both kinds of games. XIII. Sufficiently, I think, we have filled out the order—in how many and what ways the spectacles commit idolatry—concerning origins, titles, equipment, places, and crafts, so that we may be certain that in no part do these things suit us, who renounce the idols twice. Not that an idol is anything, as the Apostle says, but because the things they do, they do to demons—who take up their abode, of course, in the consecrations of the idols, whether of the dead or, as they think, of the gods.
25:38
Therefore, for this reason—since both kinds of idols are of one condition, seeing that the dead and the gods are one—we abstain from both idolatry. And no less do we spit upon temples than upon tombs; we acknowledge neither altar, we adore neither image, we do not sacrifice, we do not offer to the dead. But neither do we eat of what is sacrificed or offered to the dead, because we cannot eat the supper of God and the supper of demons. If, then, we free our gullet and belly from defilements, how much more do we withhold our more august parts, both ears and eyes, from idol-sacrificed and corpse-sacrificed pleasures—which are not transacted through the intestines but are digested in the very spirit and soul, whose cleanness pertains more to God than that of the intestines.
25:39
XIV. Now, having interposed the name of idolatry—which alone, as a subject, ought to suffice for the renunciation of the spectacles—let us treat the matter on another principle, over and above, chiefly on account of those who flatter themselves that this abstinence has not been expressly prescribed by name; as though too little were pronounced concerning the spectacles when the concupiscences of the world are condemned. For just as there is a concupiscence of money, or of dignity, or of the gullet, or of lust, or of glory, so also there is a concupiscence of pleasure; and spectacles are a species of pleasure. I suppose that the concupiscences named generally contain in themselves the pleasures also, and the pleasures likewise understood generally are expounded specifically also into the spectacles.
25:40
XV ceterum rettulimus supra de locorum condicione, quod non per semetipsa nos inquinent, sed per ea quae illic geruntur, per quae, simul inquinamentum combiberunt, tunc etiam in alteros respuunt. viderit ergo, ut diximus, principalis titulus, idololatria; reliquas ipsarum rerum qualitates contrarias dei omnes feramus. deus praecepit spiritum sanctum, utpote pro naturae suae bono tenerum et delicatum, tranquillitate et lenitate et quiete et pace tractare, non furore, non bile, non ira, non dolore inquietare. huic quomodo cum spectaculis poterit convenire? omne enim spectaculum sine concussione spiritus non est. ubi enim voluptas, ibi et studium, per quod scilicet voluptas sapit;
第十五章。至於其餘,我們在前面已就場所的境況作了陳述,說它們並非藉自身玷污我們,而是藉在其中所行之事,這些事既吸盡了污穢,便又把它吐回在他人身上。那麼,如我們所說,讓那主要的名目——偶像崇拜——先受審視;至於這些事物本身其餘的、皆與神相悖的性質,讓我們一併提出。神吩咐說,聖靈——按其本性的良善而言是溫柔嬌嫩的——要以安詳、溫和、寧靜與平安待之,不可用狂暴、用怒氣、用忿怒、用悲痛去攪擾祂。那麼,祂怎能與觀劇相合呢?因為沒有一場觀劇是不伴隨心靈的震盪的。因為凡有享樂之處,也就有熱切,享樂當然是藉這熱切而有其滋味;
XV. For the rest, we have related above concerning the condition of places, that they do not defile us through themselves, but through the things which are done there, through which, when they have drunk in the defilement, they then spit it back upon others also. Let the principal title, then, as we have said, be seen to—idolatry; the remaining qualities of the things themselves, all contrary to God, let us bring forward. God has commanded that the Holy Spirit—being, according to the goodness of His nature, tender and delicate—be treated with tranquillity and gentleness and quiet and peace, not disturbed by frenzy, by bile, by anger, by grief. How, then, will He be able to agree with the spectacles? For no spectacle is without a shaking of the spirit. For where there is pleasure, there also is eagerness, through which, of course, pleasure has its savour;
25:41
where there is eagerness, there also is rivalry, through which eagerness has its savour. Further, where there is rivalry, there also are frenzy and bile and anger and grief and the other things that follow from these, which do not accord with discipline. For even if someone enjoys the spectacles modestly and properly, according to the condition of his dignity or age or even his nature, still he is not of unmoved mind and without a silent passion of the spirit. No one comes to pleasure without emotion, no one suffers emotion without its own reverses. The very reverses are the incitements of emotion. Otherwise, if emotion ceases, there is no pleasure, and that man is already guilty of vanity, coming there where he attains nothing. But I think that even vanity is foreign to us.
25:42
And what of this, that he even judges himself, placed among those to whom, unwilling to be counted like, he certainly confesses himself an abhorrer? For us it is not enough if we ourselves do nothing of such a kind, unless we also do not associate with those who habitually do such things. 'If you saw a thief,' he says, 'you ran along with him.' Would that we might not so much as tarry in the world at the same time together with them! But nevertheless, in worldly matters we are separated, because the world is God's, but worldly things are the devil's. XVI. Since, then, frenzy is forbidden to us, we are taken away from every spectacle, and even from the circus, where frenzy properly presides. Behold the people coming to that spectacle already with frenzy, already tumultuous, already blind, already excited over their wagers. The praetor is too slow for them; their eyes are ever rolling, together with the lots, in his urn.
25:43
dehinc ad signum anxii pendent, unius dementiae una vox est. cognosce dementiam de vanitate: "misit", dicunt et nuntiant invicem quod simul ab omnibus visum est. teneo testimonium caecitatis: non vident missum quid sit; mappam putant, sed est diaboli ab alto praecipitati figura. ex eo itaque itur in furias et animos et discordias et quicquid non licet sacerdotibus pacis. inde maledicta, convicia sine iustitia odii, etiam suffragia sine merito amoris. quid enim suum consecuturi sunt, qui illic agunt, qui sui non sunt? nisi forte hoc solum, per quod sui non sunt: de aliena infelicitate contristantur, de aliena felicitate laetantur. quicquid optant, quicquid abominantur, extraneum ab iis est;
接著他們在焦慮中注視那信號;同一種瘋狂只有同一種呼喊。從那虛妄中認出那瘋狂吧:他們喊道:「他扔了!」並彼此宣告那在同一瞬間為眾人所見之事。我掌握了他們盲目的證據:他們並沒有看見所扔的是什麼;他們以為那是一塊手帕,其實那是從高處被拋下的魔鬼的形象。於是他們由此陷入狂怒、激情和爭執,以及一切為和平的祭司所不合宜之事。由此而來的是咒罵、沒有正當恨意的辱罵,甚至是沒有正當愛意的喝采。那些在那裡行動、卻不屬自己的人,能為自己得著什麼呢?也許唯獨這一樣,正是藉此他們不屬自己:他們為別人的不幸而憂傷,為別人的幸運而喜樂。凡他們所渴望的、凡他們所憎惡的,都是與他們毫不相干的;
Then in anxiety they hang upon the signal; there is one voice of one madness. Recognize the madness from its vanity: 'He has thrown!' they say, and announce to one another what has been seen by all at the same moment. I hold their testimony of blindness: they do not see what has been thrown; they think it a napkin, but it is the figure of the devil cast down from on high. And so from this they go off into furies and passions and discords, and whatever is not lawful for the priests of peace. Thence come curses, revilings without the justice of hatred, and even applause without the merit of love. What of their own are they going to obtain, who act there, who are not their own? Unless perhaps this alone, through which they are not their own: they are saddened at another's misfortune, they rejoice at another's good fortune. Whatever they desire, whatever they abominate, is foreign to them;
25:44
thus among them love too is idle and hatred unjust. Or is it perhaps permissible to love without cause more than to hate without cause? God assuredly forbids us to hate even with cause, He who commands that enemies be loved; God does not permit us to curse even with cause, He who charges that those who curse be blessed. But what is more bitter than the circus, where they do not spare even their own princes or fellow-citizens? If any of these things by which the circus rages agrees anywhere with the saints, it will be permitted even in the circus; but if nowhere, then not even in the circus. XVII. Similarly, we are bidden to put away all unchastity. In this manner, therefore, we are also separated from the theatre, which is the private consistory of unchastity, where nothing is approved but what is not approved elsewhere.
25:45
Thus its highest charm is contrived mostly out of filth, which the Atellan player mimics with gestures, which the mime represents even through women, banishing the sense of sex and shame, so that they blush more easily at home than on the stage; which, finally, the pantomime endures in his body from boyhood, that he may be able to be an artist. The very harlots too, the victims of public lust, are brought forth upon the stage, more wretched in the presence of women, from whom alone they used to hide; and they are paraded before faces of every age, of every rank; their place, their fee, their record is proclaimed—even to those who have no need of it—even (I am silent about the rest) such women as it were fitting should lurk in the darkness and in their own caverns, lest they should contaminate the day.
25:46
Let the senate blush, let all the orders blush! Those very destroyers of their own modesty, dreading their own gestures in the light and before the people, blush once a year. But if all unchastity is to be execrated by us, why should it be lawful to hear what it is not lawful to speak, since we know that even scurrility and every idle word is condemned by God? Why should it be equally lawful to see what it is a disgrace to do? Why should the things which, uttered by the mouth, defile a man, not seem to defile the man when admitted through the ears and eyes—since ears and eyes are servants of the spirit, and the spirit cannot be kept clean whose attendants are defiled? You have, then, the prohibition of the theatre too, from the prohibition of unchastity.
25:47
If we also spurn the teaching of secular literature as accounted foolishness in the sight of God, sufficient prescription is laid down for us concerning those kinds of spectacles too which, by means of secular literature, mark out the playful or the athletic stage. But if tragedies and comedies are the bloody and wanton, the impious and prodigal instigators of crimes and lusts, no commemoration of anything either atrocious or vile is the better for it: what is rejected in the deed is not to be received even in the telling. XVIII. But if you should contend that the stadium is named in the Scriptures, granted, you shall carry your point.
25:48
But you will not deny that the things done in the stadium are unworthy of your gaze—fists and heels and cuffs and every insolence of the hand, and every mangling of the human face, that is, of the divine image. You will nowhere approve the vain races and casts of the javelin and the yet vainer leaps; nowhere will violence, whether injurious or vain, please you; nor even the care of a fabricated body, so as to surpass the plastic art of God; and on account of the idleness of Greece you will hate men fattened up. And the wrestling-school too is the devil's business: the devil dashed the first men to the ground. The very gesture is a serpentine force, tenacious to seize hold, tortuous to bind, fluid to slip away. There is no use of crowns for you; why do you go hunting for pleasures out of crowns?
25:49
XIX. Shall we now expect that we should seek from the Scriptures a repudiation of the amphitheatre also? If we can contend that savagery, that impiety, that ferocity has been permitted to us, let us go into the amphitheatre. If we are such as we are said to be, let us delight in human blood. 'It is a good thing when the guilty are punished.' Who but a guilty man will deny this? And yet it does not befit the innocent to rejoice at the punishment of another, since it rather becomes the innocent to grieve that a man, his own peer, has been made so guilty as to be so cruelly expended. But who is my surety that it is always the guilty who are condemned to the beasts, or to whatever punishment, and that it is not inflicted also upon innocence, whether by the vengeance of the judge, or the weakness of the defence, or the pressure of the torture?
25:50
How much better, then, is it not to know when the wicked are punished, lest I know also when the good perish—if indeed they have a taste of good! Certainly, indeed, innocent gladiators go on sale into the training-school, that they may become the victims of the public pleasure. Even those who are condemned into the training-school—what a thing it is that from a lighter offence they should make progress into homicides by way of amendment! But these things I have answered to the heathen. For the rest, far be it that a Christian should have to learn any longer about the aversion from this kind of spectacle! Although no one can fully express all these things except one who still looks on. I would rather not complete the account than remember it.
25:51
How vain, indeed how desperate, is the argument of those who, out of an unmistakable reluctance to give up their pleasure, pretend that no mention of such abstinence is anywhere specified in the Scriptures, either by subject or by place, so as directly to forbid the servant of God to take part in gatherings of this kind. Lately I heard a novel defence of some pretty little sport. 'The sun,' says the man, 'nay, God himself, looks down from heaven and is not defiled.' To be sure: the sun casts its rays even into a sewer and is not befouled. But would to God that he looked upon none of men's outrages, so that we might all escape judgement! But he looks upon robberies too, he looks upon lies and adulteries and frauds and idolatries, and upon the very shows themselves.
25:52
And therefore, then, shall we not look on, lest we be seen by him who looks on all things? You compare, O man, the accused and the judge: the accused, who is accused because he is seen; the judge, who is judge because he sees. Do we then give ourselves to frenzy only beyond the bounds of the circus, and aim at lewdness only beyond the doors of the theatre, and to insolence only beyond the racecourse, and to mercilessness only beyond the amphitheatre, seeing that God has eyes even beyond the vaults and tiers and awnings? We are mistaken: nowhere and never is that excused which God condemns; nowhere and never is that lawful which is always and everywhere unlawful. This is the integrity of the truth, and the fullness of discipline that is owed to it, and the constancy of fear, and the fidelity of obedience: not to change one's verdict nor to vary one's judgement.
25:53
That cannot be one thing here and another there which is truly good or evil. All things are fixed and settled with the truth of God. The heathen, who have no fullness of the truth in their keeping—since neither is God their teacher of truth—interpret evil and good according to their own caprice and lust: what is good in one place is elsewhere evil, and what is evil in one place is elsewhere good.
25:54
Thus, then, it comes about that a man who in public would scarcely lift his tunic even under the pressing need of his bladder, that same man in the circus will bare himself no otherwise than by flinging all his shame into the face of everyone; and that a man who guards his virgin daughter's ears from every filthy word, that same man will himself lead her into the theatre to those cries and gesticulations; and that a man who in the streets either checks or curses a brawl carried on by fist, that same man in the stadium will cast his vote for still fiercer blows; and that a man who shudders at the corpse of one dead by the common law of nature, that same man in the amphitheatre will bend down from above with most patient eyes upon bodies gnawed and torn and befouled in their own blood; nay, a man who comes to the show to attest his approval of the punishment of a murderer, that same man will drive the reluctant gladiator to murder with lashes and rods; and a man who demands the lion for every notorious murderer, that same man will beg the wooden sword for a savage gladiator and confer on him the cap of freedom as a reward, while the slain one he will demand back again even for a spectacle of his face, gazing more gladly close at hand upon one he wished to kill from afar—so much the harder if he did not wish it.
25:55
XXII quid mirum? inaequata ista hominum miscentium et commutantium statum boni et mali per inconstantiam sensus et iudicii varietatem. etenim ipsi auctores et administratores spectaculorum quadrigarios scaenicos xysticos arenarios illos amatissimos, quibus viri animas, feminae autem illis etiam corpora sua substernunt, propter quos se in ea committunt quae reprehendunt, ex eadem arte, qua magnifaciunt, deponunt et deminuunt, immo manifeste damnant ignominia et capitis minutione, arcentes curia rostris senatu equite ceterisque honoribus omnibus simul et ornamentis quibusdam. quanta perversitas! amant quos multant, depretiant quos probant, artem magnificant, artificem notant.
What wonder? These are the inconsistencies of men who confuse and interchange the state of good and evil through inconstancy of feeling and variety of judgement. For the very authors and managers of the shows set those charioteers, actors, athletes, and gladiators—their best beloved, to whom men subject their souls and women even their bodies, for whose sake they commit themselves to the very things they blame—they set them, by the same art through which they magnify them, down low, and degrade them; nay, they openly condemn them with disgrace and loss of civil standing, barring them from the senate-house, the rostrum, the senate, the equestrian order, and all other honours together with certain marks of distinction. What great perversity! They love those whom they penalize, they debase those whom they approve; they magnify the art, they brand the artist.
25:56
What kind of judgement is it, that a man should be disgraced for the very things by which he earns favour? Nay, how great a confession it is of an evil business, when its authors, even while they are most welcomed, are not without a brand of infamy! Since, then, human recollection—even against the clamour of the pleasure's charm—decrees that such men be condemned, stripping them of the goods of rank and casting them upon a certain rock of ill-fame, how much more does divine justice take note of such craftsmen? Or will that charioteer please God, the disquieter of so many souls, the minister of so many furies, of so many states of mind, crowned like a priest or painted like a pander, whom the devil has decked out to be swept along in his chariot against Elijah?
25:57
And will that man please God who changes his own countenance with a razor, unfaithful to his own face, which, not content to make it resemble Saturn and Isis and Liber, he further exposes to the insults of blows, as though he were making sport of the Lord's precept? For indeed the devil too teaches men to offer the smitten cheek patiently. So too he has raised the tragedians high on their buskins, because 'no one can add one cubit to his stature': he wants to make Christ a liar. And now indeed I ask whether the very use of masks can please God, who forbids every likeness to be made—how much more the likeness of his own image? The author of truth does not love the false; with him everything that is feigned is adultery.
25:58
Accordingly, a voice that counterfeits sex and ages, that asserts loves, angers, groans, and tears, he will not approve: for he condemns all hypocrisy. And besides, when in the Law he prescribes that a man who is clothed in women's garments is accursed, what will he judge of the pantomime, who is even trained up in womanly ways? Surely too shall that craftsman of fisticuffs go unpunished? For such scars from the gauntlets, and such callouses of the fists, and such fungus-swollen ears he received from God when he was fashioned; for this end God furnished him with eyes—that they might fail him under the beating! I say nothing of him who sets a man before a lion, that he may be no less a murderer than the one who afterwards cuts that same man's throat.
25:59
In how many ways still shall we plead our case, that none of the things reckoned to the shows is pleasing to God, or fitting for the servant of God, seeing it is not pleasing to God? If we have shown that all things were established for the devil's sake and furnished out of the devil's stores—for whatever is not God's, or displeases God, is nothing other than the devil's—this will be the pomp of the devil, against which we renounce in the seal of faith. And what we renounce, we ought not to share in, neither by deed nor by word nor by sight nor by expectation. But do we not renounce and rescind our seal, by rescinding our testimony of it? Does it then remain that we should demand the answer from the very heathen? Let them now declare to us whether it be lawful for Christians to attend a show.
25:60
And indeed it is from this above all that they recognize a man to have become a Christian—from his repudiation of the shows. So a man plainly denies his profession when he does away with that by which he is recognized. And what hope is left in such a man? No one deserts to the enemy's camp except by throwing away his own arms, except by forsaking the standards and oaths of his own commander, except by covenanting to perish along with them. Or will he at that time give any thought to God, set there where there is nothing of God? Peace of mind, I suppose, he will have, while he strives on behalf of a charioteer; he will learn chastity, spellbound at the mimes! Nay, in every show no scandal will meet him more than that very over-careful adornment of the women and of the men.
25:61
That very agreement of taste, that conspiring or dissension among themselves in their favouritism, fans into flame the sparks of lust by the traffic between them. In short, no one goes to enter a show without first thinking of nothing but to see and to be seen. But while the tragedian is declaiming, that man will be turning over in his mind the exclamations of some prophet; and amid the strains of the effeminate flute-player he will inwardly compose a psalm to himself; and while the athletes are contending, he is the man to say that one must not strike back! He may then also be admonished about mercy, while fixed intent on the bites of bears and the sponges of the net-fighters! May God turn away from his own people so great a craving for pernicious pleasure! For what is it but to pass from the Church of God to the church of the devil, from heaven, as they say, into the mire?
25:62
Shall you weary those very hands, which you have lifted up to God, afterwards in applauding an actor? Out of that mouth by which you have uttered Amen upon the Holy Thing, shall you bear witness to a gladiator, and say 'unto the ages, from age to age' to any one at all except to God and Christ? Why then should men not become penetrable even to demons of this kind? For an example did indeed occur, with the Lord as witness of that woman who went to the theatre and returned thence with a demon. And so in the exorcism, when the unclean spirit was pressed, because he had dared to assail a believer, he said steadfastly: 'And most justly indeed have I done it:
25:63
for I found her on my own ground.' It is well attested too that to another woman a linen cloth was shown in a dream on the night of that same day on which she had listened to a tragic actor, the tragedian being named with reproach, and that this woman was not in the world beyond the fifth day. How many other proofs assuredly have come forth concerning those who by fellowshipping with the devil at the shows have fallen away from the Lord! For 'no one can serve two masters.' 'What has light to do with darkness? What has life with death?' We ought to hate these gatherings and assemblies of the heathen, if only because there the name of God is blasphemed, there the daily lions are demanded against us, thence persecutions are decreed, thence temptations are sent forth. What will you do, caught in that seething tide of impious clamours?
25:64
Not as though you could suffer anything there at the hands of men—no one recognizes you as a Christian—but reflect on what becomes of you in heaven. Do you doubt that, in that very moment when the devil rages in the assembly, all the angels look forth from heaven and mark each one: who has uttered blasphemy, who has listened to it, whose tongue, whose ears he has lent to the devil against God? Will you not then flee the seats of Christ's enemies, that chair of pestilences, and the very air that hangs over them, befouled with wicked cries? Grant that they be sweet and pleasing and simple, even that some of them be honourable: no one tempers poison with gall and hellebore, but with well-seasoned and tasty morsels, and mostly with sweet ones, he introduces that bane.
25:65
So too the devil steeps the deadly draught he brews in the things of God that are most pleasing and most acceptable. Whatever there is strong or honourable or sonorous or tuneful or subtle, regard it all just like drops of honey from a poisoned cake, and do not value your gullet's pleasure so highly as the peril that comes through the sweetness. Let his own guests be fattened on such sweets: to them belong the places and the times and the host himself. Our banquets, our nuptials, are not yet come. We cannot recline at table with them, because neither will they with us: the matter is arranged by turns. Now they rejoice, we are in conflict.
25:66
'The world,' he says, 'shall rejoice, but you shall be sorrowful.' Let us then mourn while the heathen rejoice, so that, when they begin to mourn, we may rejoice; lest, rejoicing now alongside them, we should then also mourn alongside them. You are pampered, O Christian, if you crave pleasure even in this world—nay, exceedingly foolish, if you count this to be pleasure. Certain philosophers gave this name to quietude and tranquillity; in that they rejoice, in that they find their occupation, in that they even glory. Do you sigh to me for the turning-posts and the stage and the dust and the arena? Tell me, I pray: cannot we live without pleasure, we who must die with pleasure? For what else is our vow than that of the apostle also—to depart from the world and to be received with the Lord? Here is our pleasure, where also is our vow.
25:67
XXIX iam nunc si putas delectamentis exigere spatium hoc, cur tam ingratus es, ut tot et tales voluptates a deo contributas tibi satis non habeas neque recognoscas? quid enim iucundius quam dei patris et domini reconciliatio, quam veritatis revelatio, quam errorum recognitio, quam tantorum retro criminum venia? quae maior voluptas quam fastidium ipsins voluptatis, quam saeculi totius contemptus, quam vera libertas, quam conscientia integra, quam vita sufficiens, quam mortis timor nullus, quod calcas deos nationum, quod daemonia expellis, quod medicinas facis, quod revelationes petis, quod deo vivis? haec voluptates, haec spectacula Christianorum sancta perpetua gratuita;
And now, if you think to pass this present span of time amid delights, why are you so ungrateful, that you neither have enough of, nor acknowledge, so many and such great pleasures bestowed on you by God? For what is more delightful than reconciliation with God the Father and Lord, than the revelation of the truth, than the recognition of one's errors, than the pardon of so many past crimes? What greater pleasure than disdain for pleasure itself, than contempt for the whole world, than true freedom, than an unstained conscience, than a life that suffices for itself, than no fear of death—that you tread underfoot the gods of the nations, that you drive out demons, that you work cures, that you seek revelations, that you live unto God? These are the pleasures, these the shows, of Christians—holy, perpetual, free of charge.
25:68
In these interpret to yourself the games of the circus: gaze upon the racecourse of the world, count up the seasons gliding by, the spaces already run through, look for the goal-posts of the consummation, defend the fellowships of the churches, rouse yourself at God's signal, stand erect at the angel's trumpet, glory in the palms of martyrdom. If the teachings of the stage delight you, we have literature enough, verses enough, maxims enough, songs too enough, and voices enough—no fables, but truths; no artful twists, but plain sincerities. Do you want boxing-matches and wrestling too? They are at hand, and not small nor few.
25:69
aspice impudicitiam deiectam a castitate, perfidiam caesam a fide, saevitiam a misericordia contusam, petulantiam a modestia adumbratam, et tales sunt apud nos agones, in quibus ipsi coronamur. vis autem et sanguinis aliquid? Habes Christi.
Behold lewdness cast down by chastity, perfidy cut down by faith, cruelty crushed by mercy, wantonness thrown into shade by modesty—such are the contests among us, in which we ourselves are crowned. Do you want something of blood too? You have Christ's. But what a spectacle is already at hand—the coming of the Lord, now beyond all doubt, now exalted, now triumphant! What exultation that of the angels, what glory that of the saints rising again! What a kingdom thereafter of the righteous! What a city, the new Jerusalem! But indeed there remain yet other spectacles: that last and everlasting Day of Judgement, that day unlooked-for by the nations, that day derided, when so great an antiquity of the world, and all its births, shall be swallowed up in one fire. How vast then the sweep of the spectacle!
25:70
What shall I admire? At what shall I laugh? Where shall I rejoice, where exult—as I behold so many kings, who were announced to have been received into heaven, groaning together in the lowest darkness with Jove himself and with those their very witnesses? Likewise the governors, persecutors of the Lord's name, melting in flames fiercer than those with which they raged in their insolence against the Christians? And whom besides? Those wise philosophers, blushing before their disciples who blaze together with them—the disciples whom they used to persuade that nothing pertained to God, to whom they affirmed that souls were either nothing at all, or would not return into their former bodies? The poets too, trembling not before the tribunal of Rhadamanthus nor of Minos, but of the unexpected Christ?
25:71
tunc magis tragoedi audiendi, magis scilicet vocales in sua propria calamitate; tunc histriones cognoscendi, solutiores multo per ignem; tunc spectandus auriga in flammea rota totus ruber; tunc xystici contemplandi, non in gymnasiis, sed in igne iaculati, nisi quod ne tunc quidem illos velim visos, ut qui malim ad eos potius conspectum insatiabilem conferre, qui in dominum desaevierunt. hic est ille, dicam, fabri aut quaestuariae filius, sabbati destructor, Samarites et daemonium habens; hic est quem a Iuda redemistis, hic est ille harundine et colaphis diverberatus, sputamentis dedecoratus, felle et aceto potatus;
那時悲劇演員更值得一聽,無疑在他們自己本身的災難中更加高聲;那時演員該被注視,在火中扭動得靈活得多;那時駕車手該被凝望,通身赤紅地在他那火焰的輪上;那時健鬥者該被細看,被拋擲——不是在健身房,而是在火裏——只是即便到那時,我也不願看見他們,因為我寧願把貪看不足的目光轉向那另一批人:那些曾向主發怒逞兇的人。「這就是那人,」我要說,「木匠或妓女的兒子,破壞安息日的人,那被鬼附的撒瑪利亞人;這就是你們從猶大手中買來的那位;這就是那被蘆葦與拳頭打過、被唾沫玷汙、被拿苦膽和醋給喝的人;
Then the tragedians are more worth hearing, more vocal, no doubt, in their own proper calamity; then the actors are to be marked, far more supple through the fire; then the charioteer is to be gazed upon, all red on his flaming wheel; then the athletes are to be contemplated, hurled not in the gymnasia but into the fire—save that not even then would I wish them seen, as one who would rather turn upon those others an insatiable gaze: upon those who raged against the Lord. 'This is he,' I shall say, 'the son of a carpenter or a harlot, the Sabbath-breaker, the Samaritan who has a demon; this is he whom you bought from Judas; this is he, beaten with reed and fists, defiled with spittings, given gall and vinegar to drink;
25:72
this is he whom the disciples secretly stole away, that he might be said to have risen again—or whom the gardener dragged off, lest his lettuces should be trampled by the throng of comers.' To behold such things, to exult in such things—what praetor or consul or quaestor or priest will out of his own liberality furnish it to you? And yet these things we already in a manner possess through faith, presented to us by the imagining spirit.
