6:1
I. Proxime accidit: disputatio habita est Christiano et proselyto Iudaeo. Alternis vicibus contentioso fune uterque diem in vesperam traxerunt.
I. It happened recently: a disputation was held between a Christian and a Jewish proselyte. In alternating turns, with a contentious tug-of-war, each drew the day out into evening. As certain persons on the sides of both clamoured, the truth was obscured by a kind of cloud. It seemed good, therefore, that what could be less fully clarified through the concourse of the disputation should be settled by writing, with the questions reconsidered by more careful examination of the readings. For the occasion of defending that divine grace is granted even to the Gentiles had this prerogative here, that a man from the Gentiles, and not a Jew of the lineage of the Israelites, had undertaken to claim for himself the law of God.
6:2
For this is enough: that the Gentiles can be admitted to the law of God, lest Israel should still be proud, in that the Gentiles are reckoned as a drop from a bucket or dust from a threshing-floor. Although we have God Himself as a fitting promiser and faithful surety, who promised to Abraham that in his seed all the nations of the earth should be blessed, and that from the womb of Rebecca two peoples and two nations should proceed -- namely, of the Jews, that is, of Israel, and of the Gentiles, that is, ours. Each, therefore, was called both a people and a nation, lest anyone should dare to claim for himself the privilege of grace from the appellation of a name.
6:3
For God destined that two peoples and two nations should proceed from the womb of one woman, nor did He distinguish grace in the appellation of a name, but in the bringing forth of the birth, so that he who was to proceed first from the womb should be made subject to the lesser, that is, to the later-born. For thus God spoke to Rebecca, saying: 'Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be divided from thy womb; and people shall overcome people, and the greater shall serve the lesser.'
6:4
And so, since the people or nation of the Jews is prior in time and greater through the grace of the first favour in the law, but ours is understood to be lesser in age of years, inasmuch as in the last span of the age it has attained the knowledge of the divine mercy, beyond doubt, according to the edict of the divine utterance, the prior, greater people -- that is, the Jewish -- must of necessity serve the lesser, and the lesser people -- that is, the Christian -- overcome the greater. For according to the records of the divine Scriptures also, the people of the Jews, that is, the more ancient, having forsaken God, served idols, and, having abandoned the Godhead, was given over to images, the people saying to Aaron: 'Make us gods to go before us.'
6:5
And when the gold from the women's necklaces and the men's rings had been melted in the fire, and there had come forth for them a bullock's head, to this figment all Israel, having forsaken God, gave honour, saying: 'These are the gods that brought us out of the land of Egypt.' For thus also in later times, when kings ruled over them, both under Jeroboam they worshipped golden calves and groves and gave themselves over to Baal. Whence it is proved that they were always marked as guilty of the crime of idolatry, out of the record of the divine Scriptures. But our people, that is, the later, having forsaken the idols which it formerly served, was converted to the same God from whom Israel, as we recalled above, had departed.
6:6
Sic namque populus minor id est posterior populum maiorem superavit, dum gratiam divinae dignationis consequitur, a qua Israel est repudiatus. II.
For thus the lesser people, that is, the later, overcame the greater people, in that it obtains the grace of the divine favour from which Israel was rejected. II. Let us therefore join the contest and bound the sum of the question with definite lines. For why should God, the founder of the universe, the governor of the whole world, the fashioner of man, the sower of all the nations, be believed to have given the law through Moses to one people only, and not be said to have assigned it to all nations? For unless He had given it to all, in no way would He permit even proselytes from the Gentiles to have access to it.
6:7
But as befits the goodness of God and His equity, inasmuch as He is the fashioner of the human race, He gave the same law to all nations, which at certain appointed times He commanded to be observed -- when He willed, and through whom He willed, and as He willed. For in the beginning of the world itself He gave a law to Adam and Eve, that they should not eat of the fruit of the tree planted in the midst of paradise; and that if they should do the contrary, they would die the death. This law would have sufficed for them, had it been kept. For in this law given to Adam we recognize all the precepts established which afterward sprouted forth, given through Moses -- that is: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,' and: 'Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,' and:
6:8
Non occides, non moechaberis, non fraudaberis, falsum testimonium non dices, honora patrem tuum et matrem, et: Alienum non concupisces . Primordialis enim lex est data Adae et Evae in paradiso quasi matrix omnium praeceptorum dei. Denique si dominum deum suum dilexissent, contra praeceptum eius non fecissent; si proximum diligerent id est semetipsos, persuasioni serpentis non credidissent atque ita in semetipsos homicidium non commisissent, excidendo de immortalitate faciendo contra dei praeceptum;
「不可殺人,不可姦淫,不可欺詐,不可作假見證,當孝敬父母」,又:「不可貪戀別人的東西。」因為這原初的律法乃是在樂園中賜給亞當與夏娃的,彷彿是神一切誡命的母胎。總之,他們若愛主他們的神,就不會違背祂的誡命;他們若愛鄰舍、即愛自己,就不會相信蛇的引誘,也就不會藉著違背神的誡命、從不死中墜落,而對自己犯下兇殺之罪;
'Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not defraud, thou shalt not bear false witness, honour thy father and thy mother,' and: 'Thou shalt not covet what is another's.' For the primordial law was given to Adam and Eve in paradise, as it were the womb of all the precepts of God. In short, if they had loved the Lord their God, they would not have acted against His precept; if they had loved their neighbour, that is, themselves, they would not have believed the persuasion of the serpent, and thus would not have committed homicide upon themselves by falling away from immortality through acting against God's precept;
6:9
they would also have abstained from theft, if they had not secretly tasted of the fruit of the tree, nor sought to hide themselves beneath the tree from the sight of the Lord their God, nor become partakers with the devil who falsely asserted, by believing him that they would be like God; and thus they would neither have offended God as a Father, who had fashioned them out of the mire of the earth as it were from a mother's womb; if they had not coveted what was another's, they would not have tasted of the forbidden fruit. Therefore in this general and primordial law of God, which He had ordained to be observed in the fruit of the tree, we recognize that all the precepts of the later law were specially implanted, which, brought forth in their own times, germinated.
6:10
For it belongs to the same One afterward to superimpose a law who beforehand had sent forth a precept, since it is also His to instruct afterward who had before undertaken to form the just. For what wonder is it if He augments the discipline who instituted it, if He perfects it who began it? In short, before the law of Moses written on tablets of stone, I maintain that there was a law not written, which was naturally understood and kept by the fathers. For whence was Noah found just, if the justice of the natural law did not precede in him? Whence was Abraham reckoned the friend of God, if not from the equity and justice of the natural law? Whence was Melchizedek named priest of the Most High God, if before the priesthood of the Levitical law there were not Levites who offered sacrifices to God?
6:11
Sic etenim post supra scriptos patriarchas data lex est Moysi eo tempore, posteaquam ab Aegypto excesserunt, post [intervallum] multorum temporum spatia.
For thus, after the patriarchs mentioned above, the Law was given to Moses at that time, after they had departed from Egypt, after an interval spanning many periods of time. Indeed, the Law was given four hundred and thirty years after Abraham.
6:12
From this we understand that God's law existed already before Moses, and not only on Horeb, nor first on Sinai and in the wilderness, but that a still more ancient one existed first in paradise, and afterward was given to the patriarchs, and likewise to the Jews at fixed times, when He willed, and at fixed times was reformed; so that we should no longer regard the law of Moses as though it were the primary law, but rather the one that followed, which at a fixed time God set forth also for the nations, which He had promised through the prophets, and reformed for the better, and forewarned would come; so that, just as at a fixed time the Law was given through Moses, so it may be believed to have been observed and kept only for a season. And let us not take away this power of God, which reforms the precepts of the Law according to the condition of the times, unto man's salvation.
6:13
Finally, let the one who contends that the Sabbath must still be observed as though it were a remedy of salvation, and circumcision on the eighth day because of the threat of death, show that in times past the righteous kept the Sabbath or were circumcised, and thereby became friends of God. For if circumcision cleanses a man, then when God made Adam uncircumcised, why did He not circumcise him, even after he sinned, if circumcision cleanses? Surely, when He set him in paradise uncircumcised, He appointed him as the keeper of paradise.
6:14
Therefore, since God established Adam neither circumcised nor Sabbath-keeping, He consequently also commended his offspring Abel, uncircumcised and not Sabbath-keeping, who offered Him sacrifices, accepting with favour what he offered in simplicity of heart, and rejecting the sacrifice of his brother Cain, who did not rightly divide what he offered. Noah too, uncircumcised and not Sabbath-keeping, God delivered from the flood. For Enoch also, a most righteous man, neither circumcised nor Sabbath-keeping, He removed from this world—one who has not yet tasted death—so that, as a candidate for eternity, he might already show us that we too can please God without the burden of the law of Moses.
6:15
Melchizedek also, priest of the Most High God, uncircumcised and not Sabbath-keeping, was chosen to the priesthood of God. Lot too, Abraham's kinsman, proves it, since for the merits of his righteousness, without observance of the law, he was delivered from the burning of the Sodomites. III. "But Abraham," you say, "was circumcised." Yet he pleased God before he was circumcised, and yet he did not keep the Sabbath. For he had received circumcision, but such as was to be for a sign of that time, not as a prerogative of salvation. Indeed, the patriarchs who followed were uncircumcised, like Melchizedek, who, being uncircumcised, offered bread and wine to Abraham himself—already circumcised—as he returned from battle.
6:16
"But even the son of Moses," he says, "would then have been strangled by the angel, had not his mother Zipporah circumcised the infant's foreskin with a flint. Whence," he says, "there is the greatest peril of death, if one does not circumcise the foreskin of the flesh." And yet, if circumcision in every way conferred salvation, Moses himself would not have failed to circumcise his own son on the eighth day, when it is agreed that Zipporah, compelled by the angel, did it on the journey. Let us therefore consider that the enforced circumcision of a single infant could not prescribe for a whole people, nor establish, as it were, a law of this precept unto salvation.
6:17
Nam providens deus, quod hanc circumcisionem in signum non in salutem esset daturus populo Israeli, idcirco filium Moysi ducis futuri instigat circumcidi, ut cum coepisset per eum populo dare praeceptum circumcisionis non aspernaretur populus videns exemplum istud in ducis filio iam celebratum. Dari enim habebat circumcisio, sed in signum unde Israel in novissimo tempore dinosci haberet, quando secundum sua merita in sanctam civitatem ingredi prohiberetur — secundum verba prophetarum dicentium:
For God, foreseeing that He was to give this circumcision to the people of Israel as a sign, not for salvation, therefore urged the son of Moses, the future leader, to be circumcised, so that when He should begin through him to give the precept of circumcision to the people, the people might not scorn it, seeing this example already honoured in the leader's son. For circumcision was to be given, but as a sign whereby Israel might be distinguished in the last time, when according to their deserts they should be forbidden to enter into the holy city—according to the words of the prophets who say:
6:18
Your land is desolate, your cities burned with fire; strangers shall devour your region in your sight, and the daughter of Zion shall be left desolate and overthrown by foreign peoples, like a hut in a vineyard, and like a watchman's lodge in a cucumber field, and like a besieged city. Why so? Because the prophet's following word reproaches them, saying: I have begotten sons and exalted them, but they have rejected me; and: If you stretch out your hands, I will turn my face away from you; and if you multiply prayers, they shall not hear you; for your hands are full of blood; and: Woe, sinful nation, a people full of transgressions, wicked sons; you have forsaken the Lord and provoked to indignation the Holy One of Israel.
6:19
This, then, was the providence of God: to give circumcision as a sign whereby they might be distinguished when the time should come that, according to their deserts mentioned above, they should be forbidden admittance into Jerusalem; and because it was foretold that this would be, and because we see it has been done, we recognize it. For just as fleshly circumcision, which was temporal, was imprinted as a sign upon a stubborn people, so spiritual circumcision was given unto salvation to an obedient people, as Jeremiah says: Renew unto yourselves a newness, and do not sow among thorns; be circumcised unto God, and circumcise the foreskin of your heart. And in another place he says:
6:20
For behold, the days come, says the Lord, and I will establish for the house of Judah and the house of Jacob a new covenant, not such as I gave to their fathers in the day when I led them out of the land of Egypt. From this we understand that the former circumcision, given at that time, was to cease, and that a new law—not such as He had already given to the fathers—was announced as about to proceed forth, just as Isaiah preached, saying that in the last days the mountain of the Lord and the house of God should be made manifest above the summits of the mountains. And it shall be exalted, he says, above the hills, and all nations shall come unto it, and many shall walk and shall say:
6:21
Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob—not of Esau the former son, but of Jacob the later, that is, of our people, whose mountain is Christ, cut out without the hands of hewers, filling the whole earth, as shown in Daniel. Finally, that from this house of the God of Jacob a new law too should proceed forth, Isaiah announces in the following words, saying: For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord out of Jerusalem, and He shall judge among the nations—that is, among us who have been called out of the nations; and they shall beat, he says, their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning-hooks, and nation shall not take up sword against nation, and they shall learn war no more.
6:22
Who, then, are understood to be others than we, who, instructed in the new law, observe these things, the old law being blotted out—whose coming abolition the very deed demonstrates? For the old law avenged itself with the vengeance of the sword, and plucked out an eye for an eye, and requited injury with retaliation; but the new law marked out clemency, and turned the former ferocity of swords and spears into tranquillity, and reformed the former warlike execution against rivals and enemies into the peaceful works of ploughing and tilling the earth. Therefore, just as we showed above that the old law and fleshly circumcision were declared to be about to cease, so also the observance of the new law and of spiritual circumcision shone forth in the pursuit of peace.
6:23
Populus enim [inquit] quem non noveram servivit mihi, in obauditu auris obauaivit mihi prophetae adnuntiaverunt. Quis autem populus qui deum ignorabat, nisi noster qui retro deum nesciebamus, et quis in auditu auris obaudivit ei, nisi nos qui relictis idolis ad deum conversi sumus? Nam Israel, qui deo fuerat cognitus quique ab eo in Aegypto exaltatus fuerat et per Erythraeum pelagum transvectus quique in eremo manna cibatus XL annis ad instar aeternitatis redactus nec humanis passionibus contaminatus aut saeculi huius cibis pastus sed angelorum panibus [manna] cibatus satisque beneficiis deo obligatus, domini et dei sui oblitus est dicens ad Aaron: Fac nobis deos qui nos antecedant;
祂說:素不認識我的百姓事奉了我,他們一聽見我就順從了我,眾先知已如此宣告。然而那不認識神的百姓是誰呢,豈不就是我們——我們這些從前不認識神的人?那一聽見就順從祂的又是誰呢,豈不就是我們——我們這些離棄偶像、歸向神的人?因為以色列,他們原是神所認識的,曾被神在埃及高舉,領過紅海,在曠野四十年間得嗎哪為食,達到一種近乎永恆的狀態,既不被人間的苦難所玷污,也不以這世界的食物為養,乃是以天使的糧——就是嗎哪——為食,並因神的恩惠而深深虧欠於祂;他們卻忘記了他們的主和神,對亞倫說:你為我們造神像,在我們前面引路吧;
For, He says, a people whom I did not know has served me; in the hearing of the ear it has obeyed me, the prophets have announced. But what people was it that did not know God, if not ours, we who formerly did not know God? And who in the hearing of the ear obeyed Him, if not we, who, having forsaken idols, turned to God? For Israel, who had been known to God, and who had been exalted by Him in Egypt, and carried across the Red Sea, and fed in the wilderness with manna for forty years, reduced to a likeness of eternity, neither defiled by human sufferings nor fed with the foods of this world, but fed with the bread of angels—that is, manna—and sufficiently bound to God by His benefits, forgot the Lord and their God, saying to Aaron: Make us gods to go before us;
6:24
Moyses enim ille qui nos eiecit de terra Aegypti dereliquit nos, et quid illi acciderit nescimus . Et ideo nos, qui non populus dei retro, facti sumus populus eius accipiendo novam legem supra dictam et novam circumcisionem ante praedictam. IV. Sequitur itaque ut, quatenus circumcisionis carnalis et legis veteris abolitio expuncta suis temporibus demonstratur, ita[que] sabbati quoque observatio temporaria fuisse demonstretur. Dicunt enim Iudaei, quod a primordio sanctificaverit deus diem septimum requiescendo in eo ab omnibus operibus suis quae fecit, et inde etiam Moysen dixisse ad populum: Mementote diem sabbatorum, sanctificare eum;
至於那領我們出埃及地的摩西,他已離棄了我們,我們也不知道他遭遇了甚麼。因此,我們這些從前不是神子民的人,如今藉著領受上述的新律法與那預先宣告的新割禮,已成為祂的子民。四。由此可見:既然屬肉體的割禮與舊律法的廢除,已顯明在其各自的時期中被了結,照樣安息日的遵守也可顯明本是暫時的。因為猶太人說,神從起初就使第七日成聖,在那日安息,歇了祂所造的一切工;並且因此摩西也對百姓說:當記念安息日,守為聖日;
for as for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, he has forsaken us, and we do not know what has happened to him. And therefore we, who formerly were not the people of God, have become His people by receiving the new law spoken of above and the new circumcision foretold beforehand. IV. It follows, then, that inasmuch as the abolition of fleshly circumcision and of the old law is shown to have been discharged in its own times, so likewise the observance of the Sabbath too may be shown to have been temporary. For the Jews say that from the beginning God sanctified the seventh day, resting in it from all His works which He had made, and that from this Moses too said to the people: Remember the day of the Sabbaths, to sanctify it;
6:25
you shall do no servile work in it, except that which pertains to the soul. Whence we understand rather that we ought to keep the Sabbath from every servile work always, and not only on every seventh day but through all time. And by this we must inquire what Sabbath God wills us to keep. For the Scriptures point to an eternal Sabbath and a temporal Sabbath. For the prophet Isaiah says: My soul hates your Sabbaths. And in another place he says: You have profaned my Sabbaths. Whence we discern that the temporal Sabbath is human, and the eternal Sabbath is to be reckoned divine, of which He proclaims through Isaiah: And it shall be, he says, month from month and day from day and Sabbath from Sabbath, and all flesh shall come to worship in Jerusalem, says the Lord.
6:26
This we understand to have been fulfilled in the times of Christ, when all flesh—that is, every nation—came to worship God the Father in Jerusalem through Jesus Christ His Son, just as it was foretold through the prophets: Behold, proselytes shall come to you through me. Thus, therefore, before this temporal Sabbath there was also an eternal Sabbath foreshown and foretold, just as before fleshly circumcision there was also a spiritual circumcision foreshown.
6:27
Finally, let them show, as we have already spoken beforehand, that Adam kept the Sabbath, or that Abel, offering to God a holy victim, pleased Him by a religious observance of the Sabbath, or that Enoch, when translated, was a keeper of the Sabbath, or that Noah, the builder of the ark on account of the impending flood, observed the Sabbath, or that Abraham, in observance of the Sabbath, offered his son Isaac, or that Melchizedek in his priesthood received the law of the Sabbath. But the Jews will say that from the time this precept was given through Moses, from then on it was to be observed. It is therefore manifest that the precept was not eternal but temporal, which was one day to cease.
6:28
Finally, so far is this solemnity from being celebrated in the rest of the seventh day, that Joshua the son of Nun, at the time when he was warring down the city of Jericho, said that a command had been given to him by God, that he should charge the people that the priests should carry the ark of God's covenant around the circuit of the city for seven days, and that thus, when the circuit of the seventh day was completed, the walls of the city would fall of their own accord. And so it was done, and when the space of the seventh day was finished, as had been foretold, the walls of the city fell. From this it is manifestly shown that within the number of these seven days the Sabbath day had fallen—
6:29
for seven days, from wherever they take their beginning, must of necessity include the Sabbath day within themselves—on which day not only did the priests work, but also the plunder of the city was made by the edge of the sword by all the people of Israel; nor is there any doubt that they performed servile work, since they were carrying off the spoils of war by God's command. For also in the times of the Maccabees they acted bravely by fighting on the Sabbaths, and overcame their alien foes, and by fighting on the Sabbaths recalled the law of their fathers to its former state of life; nor would I suppose that they defended any other law than that in which they had remembered it was prescribed concerning the Sabbath day.
6:30
Whence it is manifest that precepts of this kind grew strong for a season and for the necessity of the present cause, and that God had not given them a law of this kind for observance throughout perpetual time. V. Thus too we have shown that sacrifices, both of earthly offerings and of spiritual ones, were foretold; and indeed that from the beginning earthly sacrifices were foreshown in Cain, the elder son, that is, of Israel, but that the different sacrifices of the younger son, Abel, that is, of our people, were displayed. For the elder-born Cain offered to God gifts from the fruit of the earth, but the younger son Abel from the fruit of his sheep. And God looked upon Abel and upon his gifts, but upon Cain and his gifts He did not look. And God said to Cain: Why has your countenance fallen?
6:31
If indeed you offer rightly, but do not divide rightly, have you not sinned? Be still; for unto you shall be its turning, and you shall rule over it. And then Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go into the field. And he went with him there, and killed him. And then God said to Cain: Where is Abel your brother? And he said: I do not know; am I my brother's keeper? To whom God said: The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the earth. Wherefore cursed is the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood. And groaning and trembling shall you be upon the earth, and everyone who finds you shall kill you. From this act, therefore, we perceive that even then, from the beginning, the twofold sacrifices of the two peoples were foreshown.
6:32
Finally, when through Moses the priestly law was written down in Leviticus, we find it prescribed to the people of Israel that sacrifices should be offered to God in no other place than in the land of promise, which the Lord God was to give to their fathers, so that when Israel had been brought in, there should be celebrated the sacrifices and burnt offerings, both for sins and for souls, and nowhere else except in the holy land. Why, then, does the Spirit afterward foretell through the prophets that it should come to pass that in every place and in every land sacrifices should be offered to God? As through Malachi, one of the twelve prophets, He says:
6:33
I will not receive a sacrifice from your hands, for from the rising of the sun even unto its setting my name is glorified among all nations, says the Lord Almighty, and in every place clean sacrifices are offered to my name. Likewise in the Psalms of David: Bring to God, you families of the nations—doubtless because the preaching of the apostles was to go forth into all the earth—bring to God glory and honour, bring to God the sacrifice of His name; take up an offering and enter into His courts. For that not with earthly sacrifices but with spiritual ones sacrifice must be made to God, we read thus as it is written: A contrite and humbled heart is a sacrifice to God; and elsewhere: Sacrifice to God the sacrifice of praise, and pay your vows to the Most High.
6:34
Thus, therefore, spiritual sacrifices of praise are designated, and a contrite heart is shown to be an acceptable sacrifice to God. And so, just as fleshly sacrifices are understood to be rejected—of which Isaiah too speaks, saying: To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me, says the Lord; for even if you bring me fine flour, he says, it is a vain supplication, an abomination to me; and again he says: Your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, and the fat of he-goats and the blood of bulls I do not want, nor that you come to be seen by me; for who has required these things at your hands?—so spiritual sacrifices are proclaimed as accepted, as the prophets announce. But of the fleshly sacrifices, concerning which it was foretold:
6:35
I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord; I will not accept sacrifices from your hands, for from the rising of the sun even unto its setting my name is glorified among all nations, says the Lord. But of the spiritual sacrifices He adds, saying: And in every place clean sacrifices are offered to my name, says the Lord. VI.
6:36
Therefore, since it is manifest both that a temporal Sabbath was shown and an eternal Sabbath foretold, that fleshly circumcision too was foretold and spiritual circumcision foreshown, that a temporal law also and an eternal law were announced, that fleshly sacrifices and spiritual sacrifices were foreshown, it follows that, all these precepts having been given in the preceding time to the people of Israel after the fleshly manner, there should come upon them a time in which the precepts of the ancient law and of the old ceremonies should cease, and the promise of the new law and the recognition of spiritual sacrifices and the pledge of the new covenant should come upon us, as a light shone forth for us from on high, we who were sitting in darkness and were held in the shadow of death.
6:37
And so a necessity presses upon us that, since we have said beforehand that a new law was foretold by the prophets—and not such as had already been given to their fathers at the time when He brought them out of the land of Egypt—we ought to show and prove both that that old law has ceased and that the promised new law is now at work; and indeed it must first be inquired whether a giver of the new law is awaited, and an heir of the new covenant, and a priest of the new sacrifices, and a purifier of the new circumcision, and an observer of the eternal Sabbath, who should restrain the old law and establish the new covenant and offer new sacrifices and repress the ancient ceremonies and suppress the old circumcision with its Sabbath, and announce a new kingdom which shall not be corrupted.
6:38
VII. Igitur in isto gradum conseramus, an qui venturus Christus adnuntiabatur iam venerit an venturus adhuc speretur.
For it must be inquired whether the lawgiver of the new law, the observer of the spiritual Sabbath, the high priest of the eternal sacrifices, the ruler of the eternal kingdom, has come or not, so that if He has already come, He must be served; if He has not yet come, He must be awaited—provided it be manifest that by His coming the precepts of the old law are to be suppressed and the beginnings of the new law are to arise. And first of all it must be determined that the ancient law and the prophets could not cease unless He had come who was announced through that same law and through those same prophets as about to come. VII. Therefore let us join the contest at this step: whether the Christ who was announced as about to come has already come, or is still to be hoped for as coming.
6:39
That this very thing may be proved, we must also inquire into the times when the prophets announced that Christ would come, so that, if we recognize that He came within those times, we may without doubt believe that He is the very one whom the prophets sang would come, in whom we—the nations, that is—were announced as about to believe; and when it has been established that He came, let us believe without doubt that the new law also was given by Him, and let us not deny that a new covenant was ordained for us in Him and through Him. For we know that the Jews too do not deny that Christ will come, inasmuch as they extend their hope to His coming. Nor need this be inquired into at greater length, since all the prophets of old prophesied concerning Him, as Isaiah: Thus says the Lord God to Christ my Lord:
6:40
whose right hand I have held, that the nations may hearken to Him; I will break in pieces the might of kings, I will open before Him the gates, and cities shall not be closed to Him. This very thing we now see already fulfilled. For whose right hand does God the Father hold, if not Christ His Son, whom also all nations have heard—that is, in whom all nations have believed—whose preachers, the apostles, are shown in the Psalms of David: Into all the earth, he says, their sound has gone out, and to the ends of the earth their words? For in what other has the universality of nations believed than in Christ who has already come?
6:41
For in whom have the nations believed—the Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and those who dwell in Mesopotamia, Armenia, Phrygia, Cappadocia, and the inhabitants of Pontus and Asia and Pamphylia, those tarrying in Egypt and dwelling in the regions of Africa which are beyond Cyrene, Romans and sojourners, then also the Jews in Jerusalem and the other nations—so that now the diverse peoples of the Gaetuli and the many territories of the Moors, all the bounds of the Spains and the various nations of the Gauls, and the haunts of the Britons inaccessible to the Romans but made subject to Christ, and of the Sarmatians and Dacians and Germans and Scythians, and of many hidden nations and provinces and many islands unknown to us, which we are scarcely able to enumerate?
6:42
In quibus omnibus locis Christi nomen qui iam venit regnat, utpote ante quem omnium civitatium portae sunt apertae et cui nullae sunt clausae, abante quem ferreae serae sunt comminutae et valvae aereae sunt apertae. Quamquam ista et spiritaliter sint intellegenda, quod praecordia singulorum variis modis a diabolo obsessa fide Christi sint reserata, attamen etiam perspicue sunt adimpleta, utpote in quibus omnibus locis populus nominis Christi inhabitet. Quis enim omnibus gentibus regnare potuisset, nisi Christus dei filius qui omnibus regnaturus in aeternum nuntiabatur? Nam si Solomon regnavit, sed in finibus Iudaeae tantum: a Bersabee usque Dan termini regni eius signantur;
在這一切地方,那已經來臨的基督之名掌權——因為在祂面前眾城的門都敞開,無一向祂關閉;鐵閂在祂面前已被打碎,銅門已被敞開。雖然這些事也當屬靈地理解——就是各人的心,原被魔鬼以各樣方式圍困,如今已藉信靠基督而被開啟——然而它們也明顯地應驗了,因為在這一切地方,都有屬基督之名的百姓居住。因為除了神的兒子基督——那被宣告將要永遠統管萬有的——誰能統管萬國呢?因為所羅門雖然作王,卻只在猶大的境內:他國度的疆界標明是從別是巴直到但;
In all which places the name of Christ, who has already come, reigns—inasmuch as before Him the gates of all cities are opened, and to Him none are shut, before whom the iron bars have been broken to pieces and the bronze doors have been opened. Although these things are also to be understood spiritually—namely, that the hearts of individuals, besieged in various ways by the devil, have been unbarred by faith in Christ—yet they have also been manifestly fulfilled, inasmuch as in all these places the people of the name of Christ dwell. For who could have reigned over all nations, save Christ the Son of God, who was announced as about to reign over all forever? For if Solomon reigned, yet it was only within the bounds of Judea: from Beersheba even to Dan the borders of his kingdom are marked;
6:43
if indeed Darius reigned over the Babylonians and Parthians, he had no power over all nations beyond the bounds of his own kingdom; if Pharaoh, or whoever succeeded him in the hereditary kingdom, reigned over the Egyptians, there only did he obtain the dominion of his kingdom; if Nebuchadnezzar with his petty kings, he had the bounds of his kingdom from India even to Ethiopia; if Alexander of Macedon, he held no more than all Asia and the other regions which he had afterward conquered; if the Germans, even to this day they are not allowed to cross their own frontiers. The Britons are shut in within the compass of their own ocean, the nations of the Moors and the savage tribes of the Gaetuli are besieged by the Romans, lest they overstep the borders of their own regions.
6:44
What shall I say of the Romans themselves, who fortify their empire with the garrisons of their legions, and cannot extend the forces of their kingdom beyond those nations? But the name of Christ is everywhere extended, everywhere believed, worshipped by all the nations enumerated above, everywhere reigns, everywhere is adored; it is bestowed equally upon all everywhere; with Him there is no greater favour for a king, no lesser gladness for any barbarian; no separate merits of anyone's dignities or birth; He is equal to all, king to all, judge to all, God and Lord to all. Nor should you doubt to believe what we assert, when you see it come to pass. VIII.
6:45
And so we must inquire into the foretold times both of Christ's future nativity and of His passion and of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem—that is, of its devastation. For Daniel says that both the holy city and the holy one are to be cut off with a leader who is to come, and the pinnacle to be destroyed unto ruin. The times, therefore, of Christ the leader who was to come must be inquired into, which we shall investigate in Daniel; and when these have been reckoned, we shall prove that He has come both from the times prescribed and from the fitting signs and from His works; which we shall also prove from the consequent things which were announced as about to come after His coming, so that we may believe that all the precepts have now been fulfilled.
6:46
Thus, therefore, Daniel prophesied concerning Him, so as to show when and at what time He was to set the nations free, and that after His passion the city itself was to be cut off. For he speaks thus: In the first year under Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who reigned over the kingdom of the Chaldeans, I Daniel understood in the books the number of the years. And while I was still speaking in prayer, behold the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, flying, and he touched me about the hour of the evening sacrifice, and made me understand, and spoke with me and said: Daniel, now I have come forth to imbue you with understanding; at the beginning of your supplication the word went forth.
6:47
And I have come to announce to you, because you are a man greatly beloved; and think upon the word and understand the vision: seventy weeks have been cut short upon your people and upon the holy city, until transgression grow old and sins be sealed and iniquities be expiated and everlasting righteousness be brought in and vision and prophet be sealed and the Holy of Holies be anointed. And you shall know and perceive and understand: from the going forth of the word for restoring and building Jerusalem unto Christ the leader, seven and a half weeks and sixty-two and a half weeks; and it shall return and be built in breadth and rampart, and the times shall be renewed.
6:48
And after these sixty-two and a half weeks the anointing shall be cut off and shall be no more, and He shall cut off both the city and the sanctuary with a leader who is coming, and they shall be cut off as in a cataclysm unto the end of the war which shall be cut off unto ruin. And He shall confirm a covenant among many; in one week and a half of a week my sacrifice and libation shall be taken away, and in the holy place the abomination of desolation, and unto the end of the time consummation shall be given upon this desolation. Let us consider, then, how he truly foretells the seventy weeks that were to come; in which, if they should receive Him, it shall be built in breadth and length and the times shall be renewed.
6:49
But God, foreseeing what was to be—since they would not only fail to receive Him but would even persecute Him and deliver Him up to death—recapitulated and said that within sixty-two and a half weeks He should be born and the Holy of Holies be anointed, but that when the seven and a half weeks should be fulfilled, He should have to suffer and the city to be cut off after one and a half weeks—by which, that is, the seven and a half weeks were completed. For he speaks thus: and the city and the sanctuary shall be cut off with a leader who is to come, and the pinnacle to be destroyed unto ruin. Whence, then, do we show that Christ came within sixty-two and a half weeks?
6:50
Numerabimus autem a primo anno Darii, quoniam in ipso tempore Danieli visio ostenditur. Dicit enim: et intellege et conice a profectione sermonis respondere me tibi haec. Unde a primo anno Darii debemus computare, quando hanc vidit visionem Daniel.
Now we shall count from the first year of Darius, since it was at that very time that the vision was shown to Daniel. For he says: and understand and conjecture, that I am answering these things to you. Hence from the first year of Darius we ought to reckon, when Daniel saw this vision. Let us see, then, how the years are fulfilled unto the coming of Christ: for Darius reigned nineteen years; Artaxerxes forty-one years; then king Ochus, who is also Cyrus, twenty-four years; Argus one year; another Darius, who was also named Melas, twenty-one years; Alexander of Macedon twelve years; then after Alexander, who had reigned also over the Medes and Persians whom he had conquered and had established his kingdom in Alexandria—when he also called it by his own name—
6:51
post eum regnavit illic in Alexandria Soter annis XXX et V; cui succedit Philadelphus regnans annis XXX et VIII; huic succedit Euergetes annis XX et V; deinde Philopator annis XVII; post hunc Epiphanes annis XX et IIII; item alius Euergetes annis XX et VII; item alius Soter annis XXX et VIII; Ptolemaeus annis XXX et VII; Cleopatra annis XX et II mensibus V; item adhuc Cleopatra conregnavit Augusto annis XIII; post Cleopatram Augustus aliis annis XL et III imperavit — nam omnes anni imperii Augusti fuerunt L et VI — videmus autem, quoniam in quadragesimo et primo anno imperii Augusti, quo post mortem Cleopatrae vicesimo et octavo anno imperavit, nascitur Christus.
After him Soter reigned there in Alexandria thirty-five years; to him succeeds Philadelphus, reigning thirty-eight years; him Euergetes succeeds for twenty-five years; then Philopator for seventeen years; after him Epiphanes for twenty-four years; likewise another Euergetes for twenty-seven years; likewise another Soter for thirty-eight years; Ptolemy for thirty-seven years; Cleopatra for twenty-two years and five months; likewise Cleopatra also reigned jointly with Augustus for thirteen years; after Cleopatra, Augustus reigned a further forty-three years — for all the years of Augustus's rule were fifty-six — and we see that Christ is born in the forty-first year of Augustus's rule, which was the twenty-eighth year of his reign after the death of Cleopatra.
6:52
And this same Augustus survived fifteen years from the time Christ was born, and the remaining span of years will be [up to the day of Christ's nativity, in the forty-first year of Augustus, which was the twenty-eighth year of Augustus after the death of Cleopatra]: they amount to four hundred and thirty-seven years and five months at the day of Christ's nativity. And everlasting righteousness was made manifest, and the Holy of Holies — that is, Christ — was anointed, and vision and prophet were sealed, and sins were forgiven — which are granted through faith in the name of Christ to all who believe in him. But what is the meaning of his saying that vision and prophecy are sealed?
6:53
Since all the prophets proclaimed concerning him that he was to come and to suffer, therefore, because the prophecy was fulfilled through his coming, for that reason he said that vision and prophecy were sealed, because he himself is the seal of all the prophets, fulfilling all that they had of old foretold concerning him. For after his coming and his passion there is no longer any vision or prophet to proclaim that Christ is to come. In short, if this is not so, let the Jews produce some volumes of prophets after Christ, some visible miracles of any angels, such as the patriarchs of old beheld up to the coming of Christ, who has now come. From the time he came, vision and prophecy are sealed — that is, established — and rightly the evangelist says:
6:54
'The Law and the prophets were until John the Baptist.' For when Christ was baptized — that is, when he sanctified the waters in his own baptism — the whole fullness of the former spiritual charisms yielded place in Christ, as he sealed all the visions and prophecies which by his coming he fulfilled. Hence he most firmly declares that his coming seals vision and prophecy. And so, having shown both the number of years and the period of the sixty-two and a half weeks now fulfilled — at whose completion Christ came, that is, was born — let us see in what event the other seven and a half weeks, which are subdivided in the cutting-off of the former weeks, were fulfilled. For after Augustus, who survived fifteen years after Christ's nativity, the reckoning proceeds:
6:55
cui succedit Tiberius Caesar et imperium habuit annis XX et II mensibus VII diebus XX et VIII — huius quintodecimo anno imperii patitur Christus annos habens quasi XXX cum pateretur —; item Caius Caesar qui et Caligula annis III mensibus VIII diebus XIII; Nero annis XI mensibus IX diebus XIII; Galba mensibus VII diebus VI; Otho mensibus III diebus V; Vitellius mensibus VIII diebus XX et VIII. Vespasianus anno primo imperii sui debellat Iudaeos et fiunt anni L et II menses VI — nam imperavit annis XII —, atque ita in die suae expugnationis Iudaei impleverunt ebdomadas LXX praedictas in Danielo.
To him succeeds Tiberius Caesar, who held power twenty-two years, seven months, and twenty-eight days — in the fifteenth year of his reign Christ suffers, being about thirty years old when he suffered. Likewise Gaius Caesar, also called Caligula, three years, eight months, thirteen days; Nero eleven years, nine months, thirteen days; Galba seven months, six days; Otho three months, five days; Vitellius eight months, twenty-eight days. Vespasian in the first year of his rule made war upon the Jews, and this makes fifty-two years and six months — for he reigned twelve years — and thus, on the day of their conquest, the Jews fulfilled the seventy weeks foretold in Daniel.
6:56
Therefore, when these times too were completed and the Jews subdued, thereafter the drink-offerings and sacrifices ceased there, which from that time could no longer be celebrated in that place. For the anointing too was there abolished after the passion of Christ; for it had been foretold that the anointing would be there abolished, as it had been prophesied in the Psalms: 'They have destroyed my hands and my feet.' This passion of Christ [and this abolishing] was accomplished within the period of the seventy weeks under Tiberius Caesar, in the consulship of Rubellius Geminus and Rufius Geminus, in the month of March at the season of the Passover, on the eighth day before the Kalends of April, on the first day of unleavened bread, on which they slew the lamb at evening, as had been commanded by Moses.
6:57
Itaque omnis synagoga filiorum Israelis eum interfecit dicentes ad Pilatum, cum eum vellet dimittere: Sanguis huius super nos et super filios nostros, et: Si hunc dimiseris, non es amicus Caesaris, ut adimpleri omnia possent quae de eo fuerant scripta. IX. Incipiamus igitur probare nativitatem Christi a prophetis esse nuntiatam, sicut Esaias praedicat: Audite domus David! Non pusillum vobis certamen cum hominibus, quoniam deus praestat agonem; propter hoc ipse deus dabit vobis signum: ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium et vocabitur nomen eius Emmanuel, quod interpretatur nobiscum deus;
於是以色列子民全會眾殺害了他,當彼拉多想要釋放他時,他們對彼拉多說:「他的血歸到我們和我們的子孫身上」,又說:「你若釋放這人,就不是該撒的忠臣」——好叫關於他所記載的一切都得應驗。第九章。那麼,讓我們開始證明基督的誕生早已被眾先知所預告,正如以賽亞所宣告的:「大衛家啊,你們當聽!你們與人相爭尚非小事,因為神親自賜下爭戰;為此,主自己要給你們一個兆頭:看哪,必有童女懷孕生子,人要稱他的名為以馬內利」,翻譯出來就是「神與我們同在」;
And so the whole synagogue of the sons of Israel put him to death, saying to Pilate, when he wished to release him: 'His blood be upon us and upon our children,' and: 'If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar' — so that all things might be fulfilled which had been written concerning him. IX. Let us begin, then, to prove that the nativity of Christ was foretold by the prophets, as Isaiah proclaims: 'Hear, O house of David! It is no small strife for you with men, since God grants a contest; therefore God himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel,' which is interpreted 'God with us';
6:58
'he shall eat butter and honey, for before the child knows to call father or mother, he shall receive the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria against the king of the Assyrians.' 'Therefore,' say the Jews, 'let us challenge this prophecy of Isaiah and make a comparison, whether the Christ who has already come corresponds to that first name which Isaiah foretold, and to those signs of him which he proclaimed concerning him; for indeed Isaiah foretells that he must be called Emmanuel, and thereafter that he would take the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria against the king of the Assyrians. But this one,' they say, 'who has come was neither called by such a name nor engaged in warfare.' But we, on the contrary, think they must be admonished to consider also what coheres with this passage.
6:59
For the interpretation 'God with us' is appended to 'Emmanuel,' so that you should regard not only the sound of the name but also its meaning. For the Hebrew sound which is Emmanuel has as its interpretation 'God with us.' Ask, then, whether this expression 'God with us,' which is Emmanuel, is current in Christ from the time Christ shone forth — and, I think, you will not deny it. For those who from Judaism believe in Christ, from the time they believe in him, when they wish to say 'Emmanuel,' signify that God is with us; and thus it is established that he who was foretold as Emmanuel has already come, because that which Emmanuel signifies has come — that is, God with us.
6:60
They are equally led astray by the sound of the name when they so take 'the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria and the kingdom of the Assyrians' as though these portended Christ a warrior, not noticing that Scripture prefaces it: 'For before the child knows to call father or mother, he shall receive the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria against the king of the Assyrians.' For you must first consider the indication of age, whether that age could exhibit Christ as already a man, let alone a commander; as though the infant were about to summon to arms by his wailing, and would give the signal of war not with a trumpet but with a rattle, and would point out the enemy not from horseback or from a wall, but from the back or neck of his nurse or bearer, and thus would subdue Damascus and Samaria in exchange for the breast.
6:61
It would be another matter if among you infants burst forth into battle — anointed first, I suppose, in the sun, then armed in swaddling-clothes and paid their wages in butter, who would know how to hurl a lance before they could be lanced. But if in truth nature nowhere grants this — to serve as a soldier before becoming a man, to take the strength of Damascus before knowing a father — it follows that the utterance must be seen as figurative. 'But nature does not allow a virgin to give birth,' they say, 'and yet the prophet must be believed.' And rightly so; for he built up faith beforehand in an incredible thing by saying that it would be a sign: 'Therefore,' he says, 'a sign shall be given you: behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb and bear a son.' But a sign from God, unless it had been some monstrous novelty, would not seem a sign.
6:62
In short, if, whenever you are eager to draw certain people away from this divine prophecy or to pervert any of the simple, you dare to lie, as though Scripture contained not that a virgin but a young woman would conceive and bear — here too you are refuted, since a daily occurrence, namely the pregnancy and childbirth of a young woman, could not be seen as any sign at all. Rightly, then, is a virgin mother believed to have been set before us as a sign; but an infant warrior not equally so. For here too there would be no rationale of a sign; rather, once the sign of a new nativity had been assigned, thereafter, after the sign, a different order of the infant is declared — that he would eat honey and butter. Nor is this by any means a sign; it belongs to infancy.
6:63
'But that he would receive the strength of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria against the king of the Assyrians — this is the marvelous sign.' Preserve the measure of his age, and seek the meaning of the prophecy; nay rather, restore to the truth what you are unwilling to believe, and the prophecy which is disowned is understood to be fulfilled. Let those eastern Magi be believed, who honored the infancy of Christ with gifts of gold and frankincense as a king, and the infant received the strength of Damascus without battle or arms. For besides that it is known to all that the strength of the East — that is, its power — is wont to abound in gold and perfumes, it is certain that in the divine Scriptures gold constitutes the strength of the other nations as well, as he says through Zechariah:
6:64
'And Judah shall be arrayed at Jerusalem and shall gather all the might of the peoples round about, gold and silver.' For concerning this gift of gold David too says: 'And there shall be given to him of the gold of Arabia,' and again: 'The kings of the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts to him.' And the East for the most part had kings as its Magi, and Damascus was formerly reckoned to Arabia, before it was transferred to Syrophoenicia by the division of the Syrias.
6:65
Whose strength Christ then received by receiving its insignia — namely gold and perfumes — while the spoils of Samaria were the Magi themselves, who, when they had recognized him and honored him with gifts and worshipped him on bended knee as Lord and King, under the testimony of the star as indicator and guide, were made the spoils of Samaria — that is, of idolatry — by believing, of course, in Christ. For he marked idolatry by the name of Samaria, as a thing infamous on account of the idolatry with which it had then fallen away from God under king Jeroboam. Nor is this new in the divine Scriptures, to use figuratively a transference of names drawn from a comparison of crimes.
6:66
For he calls your rulers 'the rulers of Sodom,' and names your people 'the people of Gomorrah,' although those cities had long since been destroyed. And elsewhere through the prophet he says to the people of Israel: 'Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite' — from whose stock they were not descended, but on account of a like impiety — those whom at another time he had even called his sons: 'I have begotten and exalted sons.' So too Egypt is sometimes understood by him as the whole world under the reproach of superstition; so too Babylon in our John is a figure of the city of Rome, likewise great and proud in her rule and a warrior against the saints.
6:67
In this way, then, he also designated the Magi by the appellation of Samaritans, as despoiled of what they had shared with the Samaritans — namely, as we have said, idolatry against the Lord. But 'against the king of the Assyrians' means against the devil, who even now thinks himself to reign if he can drive the saints from the religion of God. This interpretation of ours will be assisted, since elsewhere too the Scriptures designate Christ a warrior by the terms of certain weapons and words of that kind; yet the Jews will be convicted by a comparison of the remaining senses. 'Gird thyself,' says David, 'with the sword upon thy thigh.' But what do you read above concerning Christ? 'Fair in beauty above the sons of men, grace is poured upon thy lips.'
6:68
But it is quite absurd if, of one whom he was girding with a sword for war, he flattered concerning the seasonableness of his beauty and the grace of his lips. Concerning him, adding further, he said: 'Stretch forth, and prosper, and advance, and reign,' and adds: 'because of thy gentleness and righteousness.' Who wields the sword and does not practice things contrary to gentleness and righteousness — that is, deceit and harshness and injustice, which are proper, of course, to the business of battles? Let us see, then, whether that sword is another whose act is another — namely the divine word of God, twice-sharpened, as by the two testaments of the old law and the new law, sharp with the equity of wisdom, rendering to each according to his deed.
6:69
It was therefore permitted also to Christ, God's own, in the Psalms — apart from warlike affairs — to be girded figuratively with the sword of God's word, to whom the foretold seasonableness suits together with the grace of his lips, whom he was then being girded upon the thigh in David, when he was being proclaimed as about to come upon the earth by the decree of God the Father: 'Thy right hand,' he says, 'shall lead thee gloriously' — namely the power of spiritual grace, from which the knowledge of Christ is drawn forth; 'thine arrows,' he says, 'are sharp' — God's precepts flying everywhere — 'threatening the exposure of every heart,' and pricking and piercing every conscience; 'the peoples shall fall under thee' — worshipping, of course. Thus Christ is mighty in war and bearing arms; thus he shall receive the spoils not of Samaria alone but of all the nations.
6:70
Recognize the spoils too as figurative, whose arms too you have learned to be allegorical; and thus, to this extent, the Christ who came was not a warrior, because he was not foretold as such by Isaiah. 'But if the Christ,' they say, 'who is believed to be coming is not called Jesus, why is he who came called Jesus Christ?' Yet both names will be established in the Christ of God, in whom he is found also called Jesus. Learn too the pattern of your own error: when Moses's successor was appointed, Auses son of Nun, he is indeed transferred from his former name and begins to be called Jesus. 'Certainly,' you say. This, we say, was first a figure of the future.
6:71
Nam quia Iesus Christus secundum populum, quod sumus nos nationes in saeculi deserto commorantes ante, introducturus esset in terram repromissionis melle et lacte manantem, id est in vitae aeternae possessionem qua nihil dulcius, idque non per Moysen id est non per legis disciplinam, sed per Iesum id est per novae legis gratiam provenire habebat circumcisis nobis petrina acie id est Christi praeceptis — petra enim Christus multis modis et figuris praedicatus est —, ideo is vir qui in huius sacramenti imagines parabatrur etiam nominis dominici inauguratus est figura, ut Iesus nominaretur. Nam qui ad Moysen loquebatur, ipse erat dei filius qui et semper videbatur;
因為耶穌基督要將第二個百姓——就是我們,即從前住在世界曠野裡的萬民——領進那流奶與蜜的應許之地,即進入永生的產業,沒有什麼比這更甘甜;而這並非藉摩西,即並非藉律法的訓練,乃是藉耶穌,即藉新律的恩典而成就,就是當我們被石頭的刃所割禮——即被基督的訓誡(因基督曾以多種方式和表號被預告為磐石)——之時;因此,那被預備作這奧祕之表象的人,也被冠以主之名的表號而受任,好使他被稱為耶穌。因為那位對摩西說話的,正是神的兒子,也是那位常被人看見的;
For because Jesus Christ was to bring the second people — which we are, the nations formerly dwelling in the wilderness of the world — into the land of promise flowing with honey and milk, that is, into the possession of eternal life, than which nothing is sweeter; and this was to come about not through Moses, that is, not through the discipline of the law, but through Jesus, that is, through the grace of the new law, when we had been circumcised with a rock's edge — that is, with the precepts of Christ, for Christ was in many ways and figures foretold as a rock — therefore that man who was being prepared as an image of this mystery was also inaugurated with the figure of the Lord's name, so that he should be named Jesus. For he who spoke to Moses was himself the Son of God, who was also always seen;
6:72
for no one ever saw God the Father and lived. And therefore it is established that it was the very Son of God who spoke to Moses and said to the people: 'Behold, I send my angel before thy face' — that is, before the face of the people — 'to keep thee on the way and to bring thee into the land which I have prepared for thee. Give heed to him and hear him, and be not disobedient to him; for he will not hide from thee, since my name is upon him' — for it was Jesus, not Moses, who was to lead the people into the land of promise. He called him an angel indeed on account of the greatness of the mighty works he was to perform — which mighty works Jesus son of Nun did, and you yourselves have read of them —
6:73
and on account of the office of a prophet, namely one announcing the divine will, just as the Spirit through the prophet also calls John, the forerunner of Christ who was to be, an angel, saying in the person of the Father: 'Behold, I send my angel before thy face' — that is, before Christ's face — 'who shall prepare thy way before thee.' Nor is it new for the Holy Spirit to call those angels whom God sets in charge as ministers of his power. For this same John was not only called the angel of Christ but also a lamp shining before Christ. 'For I have prepared a lamp for my Christ,' David proclaims; whom Christ himself, coming to fulfill the prophets, mentions to the Jews:
6:74
'He was,' he says, 'a burning and shining lamp,' inasmuch as he not only prepared his ways in the wilderness but also, by pointing out the Lamb of God, enlightened the minds of men with his proclamation, so that they might understand him to be the Lamb whom Moses announced as about to suffer. So too was Jesus, on account of the future mystery of his name. For he confirmed this name of his which he himself had given him, since he had commanded that thenceforth he be called not angel nor Auses but Jesus. Thus, therefore, both names suit the Christ of God, so that he should be called also Jesus. And since the virgin from whom Christ had to be born was to draw her descent from the seed of David, as we mentioned above, the prophet plainly says in what follows:
6:75
'And there shall be born,' he says, 'a rod out of the root of Jesse' — which is Mary — 'and a flower shall ascend from the root, and the Spirit of God shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of knowledge and godliness, the spirit of counsel and might; the spirit of the fear of God shall fill him.' For to no man did the whole sum of spiritual endowments belong except to Christ — likened indeed to a flower for glory on account of grace, but reckoned from the stock of Jesse through Mary, who was, of course, to be counted from there. For she was of the country of Bethlehem and of the house of David, as Mary — from whom Christ is born — was registered in the census among the Romans.
6:76
I demand also whether he who was foretold by the prophets as about to come from the stock of Jesse and to display all humility and patience and tranquility has come; and thus that man who is shown to be such will himself be the Christ who came. For concerning him the prophet says: 'A man set amid stripes and knowing how to bear weakness, who was led as a sheep to the sacrifice, and as a lamb before its shearer opened not his mouth.' If he neither strove nor cried out, nor was his voice heard abroad, who did not break the bruised reed — the faith of Israel — who did not quench the smoldering flax — that is, the momentary ardor of the nations — but rather made it shine by the rising of his own light, he can be no other than the one who was foretold.
6:77
It behooves us, then, that the activity of the Christ who came be examined against the rule of the Scriptures; for we read that he was marked out, unless I am mistaken, by a twofold operation — of preaching and of power. But concerning each title let it be thus arranged. And so let us specifically discharge the order we have begun, teaching that Christ was announced as a preacher, as through Isaiah: 'Cry aloud,' he says, 'in strength and spare not, lift up thy voice as a trumpet, and declare to my people their misdeeds and to the house of Jacob their sins. Day by day they seek me and desire to know my ways, as a people that had done righteousness and had not forsaken the judgment of God,' and so on — but that he would also perform mighty works from the Father:
6:78
'Behold our God shall render judgment, he himself shall come and shall save us; then shall the infirm be healed and the eyes of the blind shall see and the ears of the deaf shall hear and the tongues of the dumb shall be loosed and the lame shall leap like a hart,' and the rest. That Christ performed these things not even you deny, inasmuch as you used to say that you were not stoning him for his works, but because he did these things on the Sabbath. X. As for the outcome of his passion, you plainly dispute it, denying that the passion of the cross was foretold of Christ, and arguing besides that it must not be believed that God would expose his own Son to that kind of death, of which he himself said: 'Cursed is everyone who has hung upon a tree.' But the rationale of the matter precedes the meaning of this curse. For he says in Deuteronomy:
6:79
'But if there be in anyone a transgression deserving the judgment of death, and he shall die, and you shall hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain on the tree, but with burial you shall bury him that same day, since cursed by God is everyone who has been hung on a tree; and you shall not defile the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.' Therefore he did not curse Christ in this passion, but made a distinction, so that whoever, on account of some transgression, had incurred the judgment of death and died, hanged upon a tree, this one should be cursed by God — namely, he who was hanged on a tree on account of the deserts of his own transgressions.
6:80
But Christ, who spoke no deceit from his mouth and who displayed all righteousness and humility — and, as we recalled foretold of him above — was exposed to that kind of death not for his own deserts, but so that those things which were foretold by the prophets as coming upon him through you might be fulfilled; as in the Psalms the very Spirit of Christ was already singing, saying: 'They repaid me evil for good,' and: 'What I had not seized I then paid back,' and: 'They pierced my hands and my feet,' and: 'They put gall into my drink, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink,' and: 'Upon my garment they cast lots' — just as the other things which you were to commit against him were foretold.
6:81
Itaque imprimis Isaac, cum a patre hostia duceretur lignum[que] ipse sibi portans, Christi exitum iam tunc denotabat in victimam concessi a patre lignum passionis suae baiulantis.
All these things indeed he suffered, having endured them not for any evil deed of his own, but that the Scriptures from the mouth of the prophets might be fulfilled. And assuredly the mystery of his passion had to be prefigured in the prophecies, and the more incredible it was, the more it would prove a scandal if it were nakedly foretold, and the more magnificent, the more it had to be overshadowed, so that the difficulty of understanding might seek grace from God. And so, first of all, Isaac, when he was led by his father as a victim, himself carrying the wood, even then denoted the death of Christ, who was yielded up by his Father as a victim, carrying the wood of his own passion.
6:82
Joseph too himself prefigured Christ, even by this alone — that I may not delay my course — that he suffered persecution from his brothers and was sold into Egypt on account of the grace of God, just as Christ was sold by Israel, carnally by his brothers, when he was betrayed by Judas. For Joseph too is blessed by his father in these words: 'His is the beauty of a bull, his horns are the horns of a unicorn; with them he shall winnow the nations together, even to the ends of the earth.' Certainly it was not a rhinoceros that was signified as the unicorn, nor a minotaur as two-horned, but Christ was signified in him — a bull on account of his twofold disposition, to some fierce as judge, to others gentle as savior, whose horns would be the extremities of the cross —
6:83
nam et in antemna navis quae crucis pars est hoc extremitates eius vocantur —, unicornis autem medio stipite palus. Hac denique virtute crucis et hoc more cornutus universas gentes et nunc ventilat per fidem auferens a terra in caelum et tunc ventilabit per iudicium deiciens de caelo in terram. Idem erit et alibi taurus apud eandem scripturam. Cum Iacob in Simeonem et Levi porrexit benedictionem, de scribis et pharisaeis prophetat; ex illis enim deducitur census illorum. Interpretatur enim spiritaliter sic: Simeon et Levi perfecerunt iniquitatem ex sua secta, qua scilicet Christum sunt persecuti;
因為在船的桁桿(那是十字架的一部分)上,其兩端便如此稱呼——而那獨角則是中央的直柱,即那樁子。因此,藉這十字架的能力,如此生角的他,如今藉信把萬民簸揚,將他們從地帶到天上,將來又要藉審判把他們簸揚,將他們從天摔到地上。這同一位在同一部經文的別處也要作公牛。當雅各向西緬和利未伸出他的祝福時,他是在預言論到文士和法利賽人;因為他們的族系是從這兩人引出的。因為在屬靈意義上這樣解釋:「西緬和利未憑他們的宗派行了不義」——即他們藉以逼迫基督的那不義;
for on the yard-arm of a ship, which is part of a cross, its ends are so called — while the single horn is the central upright, the stake. By this power of the cross, then, and horned in this manner, he now winnows all the nations through faith, taking them from earth to heaven, and then shall winnow them by judgment, casting them down from heaven to earth. The same one will also be a bull elsewhere in the same Scripture. When Jacob extended his blessing upon Simeon and Levi, he prophesies concerning the scribes and Pharisees; for from those two is drawn their lineage. For it is interpreted spiritually thus: 'Simeon and Levi accomplished iniquity out of their sect' — namely, that with which they persecuted Christ;
6:84
'into their counsel let not my soul come, and upon their assembly let not my inward parts recline, for in their indignation they slew men' — that is, the prophets — 'and in their lust they hamstrung a bull' — that is, Christ, whom, after the slaughter of the prophets, they slew, and cruelly severed his sinews by fastening him with nails. Otherwise it would be pointless, if after the murders already committed by them he were reproaching them for a butchery of others and not of themselves.
6:85
Iam vero Moyses quid utique tunc tantum, cum Iesus adversus Amelech proeliabatur, expansis manibus orabat residens, quando in rebus tam attonitis magis utique genibus positis et manibus caedentibus pectus et facie humi volutante orationem commendare debuisset, nisi quia illic, ubi nomen domini Iesu dicebat dimicaturi quandoque adversus diabolum, crucis habitus quoque erat necessarius, per quam Iesus victoriam esset relaturus?
Now indeed, why did Moses, precisely at that time when Joshua was fighting against Amalek, pray sitting with outstretched hands, when in matters so alarming he ought rather to have commended his prayer with knees bent and hands beating his breast and face rolling on the ground — unless it was because there, where the name of the Lord Jesus, who was one day to contend against the devil, was being spoken, the posture of the cross too was necessary, through which Jesus was to bear away the victory?
6:86
Idem rursus Moyses post interdictam omnis rei similitudinem cur aereum serpentem ligno impositum pendentis habitu in spectaculum Israeli salutare proposuit eo tempore quo a serpentibus post idololatriam exterminabantur, nisi quod hic dominicam crucem intentabat, qua serpens diabolus designabatur et laesus quisque ab eiusmodi colubris id est angelis eius a delictorum peccantia ad crucis istius sacramenta intentus salvus efficiebatur? nam qui in illam tunc respiciebat a morsu serpentium liberabatur. Age nunc, si legisti penes prophetam in psalmis:
Again, why did that same Moses, after he had forbidden every likeness of anything, set up a bronze serpent placed on a pole in the posture of one hanging, as a saving spectacle for Israel, at that time when they were being destroyed by serpents after their idolatry — unless it was because here he was pointing to the Lord's cross, by which the serpent, the devil, was designated, and everyone who had been wounded by serpents of that kind — that is, by his angels — was, on account of the sinfulness of transgressions, made whole by being directed to the mysteries of that cross? For whoever then looked upon it was freed from the serpents' bite. Come now, if you have read in the prophet in the Psalms:
6:87
'The Lord has reigned from the tree,' I await what you understand, lest perchance you suppose some wood-cutter king to be signified and not Christ, who from that time reigned after death was overcome by the passion of the tree. Likewise Isaiah too: 'For a child,' he says, 'is born to us, and a son is given to us.' What novelty is there, unless he speaks of the Son of God? — 'And there is given to us one whose dominion has been made upon his own shoulder.' Who at all of kings bears the insignia of his own power upon his shoulder, and not either a diadem upon his head or a scepter in his hand, or the use of some new peculiar mark?
6:88
Si adhuc quaeris dominicae crucis praedicationes, satis iam poterit tibi facere vicesimus primus psalmus totam Christi continens passionem canentis iam tunc gloriam suam:
But the sole new king of the ages, Christ Jesus, lifted up his new glory and power and majesty upon his shoulder — namely the cross — so that, according to the earlier prophecy, from that time the Lord should reign from the tree. For concerning this tree God also hints through Jeremiah what you were going to say: 'Come, let us cast wood into his bread and crush him from the land of the living, and his name shall be remembered no more.' Assuredly it was into his body that wood was cast. For thus Christ revealed it, calling the bread his body, whose body long ago the prophet announced in the bread. If you still seek proclamations of the Lord's cross, the twenty-first Psalm can now sufficiently satisfy you, containing the whole passion of Christ, who even then sang his own glory:
6:89
'They pierced,' he says, 'my hands and my feet,' which is the peculiar atrocity of the cross. And again, when he implores the aid of the Father: 'Save me,' he says, 'from the lion's mouth' — namely death — 'and my lowliness from the horns of the unicorns' — that is, from the points of the cross, as we showed above. This cross neither David himself suffered nor any of the kings of the Jews, lest you suppose that the passion of any other is prophesied than his who alone was so signally crucified by the people.
6:90
Now if the hardness of your heart shall spurn and mock all these interpretations, we shall prove that the mere death of Christ having been prophesied is sufficient, so that from the fact that it was not declared what kind of death it would be, it is to be understood to have come about through the cross, and that the passion of the cross was to be assigned to no other than to him whose death was foretold. For I wish to show his death and passion and burial by the single utterance of Isaiah: 'By the crimes of my people,' he says, 'was he led to death, and I will give the wicked for his burial and the rich for his death, because he did no wickedness, nor was deceit found in his mouth; and God willed to deliver his soul from death,' and the rest. He also says further: 'His burial has been taken away from the midst.'
6:91
For he was not buried unless he had died, nor was his burial taken away from the midst except through his resurrection. Then it adds: 'Therefore he himself shall have many for his inheritance, and shall divide the spoils of many' — who else but he who was born, as we have shown above? — 'because his soul was delivered up unto death.' For once the reason for his grace was shown, namely that the injury of death was to be recompensed, it was likewise shown that he would obtain these things on account of his death after his death, that is, after his resurrection. For as to what happened in his Passion, that midday grew dark, the prophet Amos declares, saying: 'And it shall be in that day, saith the Lord:'
6:92
'the sun shall set at midday, and the day of light shall grow dark upon the earth; and I will turn your feast days into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon your loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for a beloved one, and those who are with him as a day of grief.' For this too Moses prophesied that you would do at the beginning of the first month of the new fruits, when the whole multitude of the children of Israel was to sacrifice a lamb at evening; and he foretold that you should eat this solemnity of that day, that is, the Passover of unleavened bread, with bitterness; and he added that it is the Passover of the Lord, that is, the Passion of Christ — which was fulfilled in this very way, that on the first day of unleavened bread you slew Christ.
6:93
And that the prophecies might be fulfilled, the day hastened to make evening, that is, to produce darkness, which came at midday; and thus God turned your feast days into mourning and your songs into lamentation. For after the Passion of Christ there befell you also captivity and dispersion, foretold beforehand by the Holy Spirit. XI. For on account of these deserts of yours Ezekiel too announces your coming disaster, and not only in this present age, which has already come to pass, but in the day of retribution which shall follow. From that disaster none shall be delivered, save he who shall have been sealed with the Passion of Christ whom you reject. For thus it is written: 'And he said unto me:'
6:94
'Son of man, hast thou seen what the elders of Israel do, each of them in darkness, each in his hidden chamber? For they said: The Lord seeth us not, the Lord hath forsaken the land. And he said unto me: Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations which these do. And he brought me to the doors of the gate of the Lord's house which looketh toward the north, and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. And the Lord said unto me: Son of man, hast thou seen? Is it a small thing to the house of Judah, that they do the abominations which they have done? And thou shalt yet see greater affections of theirs.'
6:95
'And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord's house, and behold, at the doors of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men: their backs were turned toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and these were worshipping the sun. And he said unto me: Seest thou, son of man? Is the house of Judah a little thing, that they do the abominations which they do here? For they have filled up their impieties, and behold, they are as it were mocking; and I will act in my indignation; mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and they shall cry in mine ears with a loud voice, and I will not hear them, neither will I have pity. And he cried in mine ears with a loud voice, saying: The vengeance of this city hath drawn near.'
6:96
'And each one had the weapons of destruction in his hand; and behold, six men came from the way of the high gate which looketh toward the north, and each one's axe of dispersion was in his hand. And one man in the midst of them was clothed with a long robe, and a girdle of sapphire about his loins; and they went in and stood beside the brazen altar; and the brightness of the God of Israel went up from the Cherubim which was over them under the open sky of the house. And he called the man who was clothed with the long robe, who had upon his loins the girdle, and the Lord said unto him: Pass through the midst of Jerusalem, and mark a sign upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and grieve over all the abominations that are done in the midst of them. And to these he said, while I was listening:'
6:97
'Go after him into the city and smite, and let not your eyes spare, and have no pity on old man or young man or virgin; and slay the little ones and the women, all of them, that they may be utterly destroyed; but touch not any upon whom is the sign [Tau], and begin at my sanctuary.' Now the sacrament of this sign, foretold in various ways, is that in which life was prepared beforehand for men, in which the Jews were not to believe, just as Moses formerly announced in Exodus, saying:
6:98
'You shall be cast out of the land into which you enter, and among those nations you shall have no rest, and there shall be no stability for the sole of thy foot; and God shall give thee a fainting heart, and a wasting soul, and failing eyes so that they see not; and thy life shall be hanging on the wood before thine eyes, and thou shalt not believe thy life.' Therefore, since the prophecies were fulfilled through his coming — that is, through the Nativity which we mentioned above, and the Passion which we have plainly set forth — for this reason Daniel too said that the vision and the prophet should be sealed, because Christ is the seal of all the prophets, fulfilling all things that had aforetime been announced concerning him; for after his coming and his own Passion there is no longer vision nor prophet.
6:99
Unde firmissime dicit adventum eius signare visum et prophetiam. Itaque ostendentes et numerum annorum et tempus LX et II et dimidiae ebdomadarum adimpletarum probavimus tunc venisse Christum id est natum, et septem et dimidiae ebdomadarum, quae sunt subdivisae in abscisione priorum ebdomadarum, — intra quae tempora passum ostendimus Christum atque ita LXX ebdomadibus conclusis et civitate exterminata et sacrificium et unctionem exinde cessare. Sufficit hucusque de his interim ordinem Christi decucurrisse, quod talis probatur qualis adnuntiabatur [ut] iam ex ista consonantia scripturarum, qua ex praeiudicio maioris partis adversus Iudaeos elocuti sumus;
因此他極其確鑿地說,祂的降臨封住了異象與預言。這樣,我們既已指明年數,也指明那已滿的六十二週半的時期,就證明了基督在那時降臨,即已降生;又指明那七週半——它們在前面各週的截斷中再被細分——在這期間我們已證明基督受了難;如此,七十週既已滿盡、城既被毀,祭祀與膏抹便從此止息。目前就這些事略述基督的次序至此已足,因為祂被證明正如所宣告的那樣——這正是出於聖經彼此的和諧,我們已憑大多數〔預言〕的先決判斷、駁斥猶太人而闡明;
Whence he says most firmly that his coming seals up vision and prophecy. And so, having shown both the number of years and the time of the fulfilled sixty-two and a half weeks, we have proved that Christ then came, that is, was born; and of the seven and a half weeks, which are subdivided in the cutting off of the former weeks — within which times we have shown that Christ suffered; and thus, the seventy weeks being concluded and the city destroyed, sacrifice and anointing thereupon ceased. Let it suffice thus far to have traced meanwhile the order of Christ concerning these matters, since he is proved to be such as he was announced to be — from this very harmony of the Scriptures, which we have set forth against the Jews on the basis of the prejudgment of the greater part;
6:100
XII. Aspice universas nationes de voragine erroris humani exinde emergentes ad dominum deum creatorem et Christum eius, et, si audes negare prophetatum, statim tibi promissio patris occurrit in psalmis dicens: Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te; pete a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditatem tuam et possessionem tuam terminos terrae .
for let them not call into doubt or deny the things we bring forward as written, so that from this too they cannot deny that these are on a par with the divine Scriptures, so that the things which were foretold as future after Christ may be recognized as fulfilled. Nor, unless he had come, after whom the things announced were to be blotted out, would even the things that are fulfilled be proved. XII. Behold all the nations emerging thenceforth from the abyss of human error unto the Lord God the Creator and his Christ; and, if thou darest to deny that this was prophesied, at once the promise of the Father meets thee in the Psalms, saying: 'Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee; ask of me, and I will give thee the nations for thine inheritance, and thy possession the ends of the earth.'
6:101
Nor wilt thou be able to call any other the Son of God than Christ, nor to say that the ends of the earth were promised rather to David — who reigned within Judaea alone — than to Christ, who has now taken the whole world by the faith of his Gospel, as he says through Isaiah: 'Behold, I have given thee for a covenant of my people, for a light of the Gentiles, to open the eyes of the blind' — namely of those who err — 'to loose the bound from their chains' — that is, to free from sins — 'and those who sit in darkness' — namely of ignorance — 'from the prison house,' that is, of death. And if these things come to pass through Christ, they will have been prophesied of none other than of him through whom we behold them accomplished. XIII.
6:102
Therefore, since the children of Israel affirm that we err in receiving the Christ who has already come, let us prescribe to them from the Scriptures themselves that the Christ who was foretold has already come — although from the times of Daniel's prophesying we have proved that the Christ who was announced has already come. For it behoved him to be born in Bethlehem of Judah. For thus it is written in the prophet: 'And thou, Bethlehem, art not the least among the leaders of Judah; for out of thee shall come forth a leader who shall feed my people Israel.' But if he is not yet born, who was announced as the leader to proceed from the tribe of Judah out of Bethlehem? For it behoved him to proceed from the tribe of Judah and from Bethlehem.
6:103
But we now observe that no one of the race of Israel has remained in the city of Bethlehem, ever since it was forbidden that any of the Jews should tarry within the confines of that region — so that this too might be fulfilled, namely the prophet's word: 'Your land is desolate, your cities are burned with fire' — that is, what befell them in the time of war — 'strangers shall devour your region in your sight, and it shall be desolate and overthrown by alien peoples,' that is, by the Romans. And in another place the prophet says thus:
6:104
'You shall see the King with glory,' that is, Christ working mighty deeds unto the glory of God the Father, 'and your eyes shall behold the land from afar' — because to you, for your deserts, after the storming of Jerusalem, being forbidden to enter your land, it was permitted only to behold it from afar with the eyes; 'your soul,' he says, 'shall meditate fear,' namely what they suffered at the time of their overthrow. How then shall a leader be born of Judah, and how far shall he proceed from Bethlehem, as the divine volumes of the prophets announce, when there is absolutely none left there this day of Israel from whose stock Christ could be born? For if, according to the Jews, he has not yet come, when he shall have begun to come, whence shall he be anointed?
6:105
For the Law prescribed that in captivity it is not lawful to prepare the anointing of the royal chrism. But if there is now no longer even anointing there, as Daniel prophesied — for he says 'it shall be exterminated' — then there is no longer anointing there, because there is not even the temple where was the horn from which the kings were anointed. If therefore there is no anointing, whence shall the leader be anointed who is to be born in Bethlehem, or how shall he proceed from Bethlehem, when of the seed of Israel there is absolutely none in Bethlehem? Let us, then, show once more, both that Christ has already come according to the prophets, and has suffered, and has already been received in the heavens, and is to come thence again according to the preachings of the prophets.
6:106
For after his coming, according to Daniel, the city itself was to be destroyed; and we read that it was so done, and we recognize it. For the Scripture says thus: 'the city and the sanctuary shall be destroyed together with the leader.' What leader? Undoubtedly he who was to proceed from Bethlehem and from the tribe of Judah. Whence it is also manifest that the city was to be destroyed at that same time when its leader was to suffer within it, according to the Scriptures of the prophets who say: 'I have stretched out my hands all the day long to a rebellious people that contradicts me, who walk in a way that is not good, but after their own sins.' Likewise in the Psalms: 'They have destroyed my hands and my feet, they have numbered all my bones; and they themselves have looked and gazed upon me,' and:
6:107
In siti mea potaverunt me aceto .
'In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.' These things David did not suffer, so that he might seem to have said them deservedly of himself, but Christ who was crucified: for the hands and feet are not destroyed save of him who is hanged upon the wood. Whence David himself said that the Lord would reign from the wood; for elsewhere too the prophet proclaims the fruit of this wood, saying: 'The earth hath given her blessings' — namely that virgin earth, not yet watered by rains nor made fruitful by showers, from which man was then first fashioned, from which Christ has now been born according to the flesh from a virgin; 'and the wood,' he says, 'hath borne its fruit' — not that wood in paradise which gave death to the first-formed, but the wood of Christ's Passion, from which the life that hangs was not believed by you.
6:108
For this wood was then in a mystery, when Moses sweetened the bitter water, whereby the people who were perishing of thirst in the wilderness were revived by drinking — even as we, drawn forth from the calamities of the world in which we dwelt, perishing of thirst (that is, tried by the divine word), drinking through the water of baptism by the wood of Christ's Passion, revived the faith that is in him. From which faith Israel fell away, according to Jeremiah the prophet, who says: 'Send, inquire diligently, whether such things have been done, whether the nations change their gods — and these are no gods; but my people hath changed its glory, from which nothing shall profit them; the heaven was astonished at this.' And when was it astonished? Undoubtedly when Christ suffered. 'And it shuddered,' he says, 'exceedingly greatly.'
6:109
And when did it shudder exceedingly, save at the Passion of Christ, when the earth also trembled, and the sun grew dark at midday, and the veil of the temple was rent, and the tombs were torn open? 'For,' he says, 'my people hath done these two evils: they have forsaken me the fountain of the water of life, and have dug themselves broken cisterns that can hold no water.' Undoubtedly, by not receiving Christ the fountain of the water of life, they began to have broken cisterns, that is, synagogues in the dispersions of the nations, in which the Holy Spirit no longer abides, as in time past he abode in the temple before the coming of Christ, who is the true temple of God. For the prophet foretells that they should suffer this very thirst of the divine Spirit, saying:
6:110
'Behold, they that serve me shall eat, but ye shall hunger; they that serve me shall drink, but ye shall thirst, and from the affliction of your spirit ye shall howl; for ye shall leave your name for a satiety unto mine elect, but the Lord shall slay you; and to them that serve me a new name shall be named, which shall be blessed upon the earth.' Furthermore we read that the mystery of this wood was celebrated also in the Kingdoms. For when the sons of the prophets were felling wood with axes upon the river Jordan, the iron leaped off and was sunk in the river; and so, when the prophet Elisha came up, the sons of the prophets besought him to draw out the iron which had been sunk in the river.
6:111
Atque ita [Helisaeus] accepto ligno et misso in eum locum ubi submersum fuerat, ferrum statim supernatavit, quod receperunt filii prophetarum, et lignum mersum est. Ex quo intellexerunt, quod Heliae spiritus in eum sit repraesentatus. Quid manifestius huius ligni sacramento, quod duritia huius saeculi mersa in profundo erroris et a ligno Christi id est passionis eius in baptismo liberatur, ut quod perierat olim per lignum in Adam id restitueretur per lignum Christi, nobis scilicet qui successimus in loco prophetarum ea sustinentes hodie in saeculo quae semper passi prophetae propter divinam religionem;
於是〔以利沙〕取了木頭,投入斧頭沉沒之處,鐵器立時浮起,先知門徒把它撈回,而木頭沉下。他們由此明白,以利亞的靈在他身上得了彰顯。還有甚麼比這木頭的奧祕更明顯呢?就是這沉沒在迷惘深淵中的今世之剛硬,藉基督的木頭、即祂受難的木頭,在洗禮中得了釋放——好使那從前在亞當裡藉木頭喪失的,藉基督的木頭得以復原;這正是給我們——我們既承接了先知的地位,今日在世上忍受眾先知素來為神聖信仰所受的一切;
And so [Elisha], having taken wood and cast it into the place where it had been submerged, the iron at once floated up, which the sons of the prophets recovered, and the wood sank. From which they understood that the spirit of Elijah was represented in him. What is more manifest than the mystery of this wood, namely that the hardness of this world, sunk in the depth of error, is set free by the wood of Christ, that is, of his Passion, in baptism — so that what once perished through the wood in Adam might be restored through the wood of Christ; namely to us who have succeeded in the place of the prophets, enduring today in the world those things which the prophets ever suffered for the sake of the divine religion;
6:112
for some they stoned, others they drove into flight, and very many indeed they delivered up to death — which they cannot deny. This wood Isaac too, the son of Abraham, himself carried for the sacrifice, when God had commanded that he himself be made a victim. But because these were mysteries which were being kept to be accomplished in the times of Christ, Isaac too was preserved, when the ram was offered that was caught by the horns in the thicket; and Christ in his own times carried the wood upon his shoulders, clinging to the horns of the cross, with the crown of thorns placed around his head. For it behoved him to be made a sacrifice for all the nations, who 'was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.'
6:113
Quare?
For he spoke nothing to Pilate who questioned him; for in his humiliation his judgment was taken away. 'But who shall declare his generation?' Wherefore? Because absolutely no man was privy to the generation of Christ at his conception, when the Virgin Mary was found with child by the word of God; and because his life should be taken from the earth. Why so? Because after his resurrection from the dead, which was accomplished on the third day, the heavens received him, according to the prophecy uttered in this manner: 'Before the light they shall rise unto me, saying: Let us go and return unto the Lord our God, for he himself shall rescue and deliver us after two days, on the third day' — which is his glorious resurrection — whose neither nativity nor Passion the Jews acknowledged:
6:114
from the earth into the heavens he received him, whence the Spirit himself had also come to the Virgin. Therefore, since the Jews still contend that their Christ has not yet come — whom we have proved in so many ways to have come — let the Jews acknowledge their own downfall, which they were foretold to bring upon themselves after the coming of Christ, on account of the impiety by which they both despised him and slew him. For first, from the day on which, according to the saying of Isaiah, 'a man cast away his abominations of gold and silver, which they had made to be worshipped, vain and hurtful things' — that is, from the time when we the Gentiles, our hearts enlightened, cast away idols through the truth of Christ — the Jews behold that too accomplished which follows.
6:115
For the Lord of Hosts took away from the Jews and from Jerusalem, among other things, also the wise architect who builds the Church, the temple of God, and the holy city, and the house of the Lord. For from then the grace of God ceased among them, and it was commanded to the clouds that they should not rain rain upon the vineyard Sorech — that is, upon the house of Israel, that the heavenly benefits should not come forth for it. For it had produced thorns, from which it had crowned Christ, and not righteousness but the clamour with which it had wrung him out unto the cross. And thus, the former graces being withdrawn, the Law and the prophets were until John, and the pool of Bethesda until the coming of Christ:
6:116
[valetudines ab Israele curare] desiit a beneficiis deinde, cum ex perseverantia furoris sui nomen domini per ipsos blasphemaretur, sicut scriptum est: Propter vos nomen domini blasphematur in gentibus . Ab illis enim incepit infamia, et tempus medium a Tiberio usque ad Vespasianum. Qui cum ista commisissent nec intellexissent Christum in tempore suae visitationis venientem, facta est terra eorum deserta et civitates eorum igni exustae;
〔以色列得醫治疾病的恩惠〕從此在其恩澤上止息了,那時因他們狂怒不已,主的名藉他們遭褻瀆,正如經上所記:「主的名因你們的緣故在外邦中被褻瀆。」因為這惡名是從他們起首的,中間的時期是從提庇留到維斯帕先。他們既行了這些事,又不明白基督在眷顧他們的時候降臨,他們的地就變為荒涼,他們的城被火焚燒;
[the healing of diseases from Israel] ceased thereafter from its benefits, when, out of the persistence of their fury, the name of the Lord was blasphemed through them, as it is written: 'On your account the name of the Lord is blasphemed among the Gentiles.' For from them the infamy began, and the intervening time was from Tiberius until Vespasian. And when they had committed these things, and had not understood Christ coming in the time of their visitation, their land was made desolate, and their cities burned with fire;
6:117
their region, under their own gaze, was left over to strangers devouring it; the daughter of Zion was as a watchtower in a vineyard, as a little hut in a cucumber field — namely from the time that Israel knew not the Lord, and the people understood him not, but rather forsook him and provoked the Holy One of Israel to indignation. Thus also the conditional threat of the sword: 'If ye will not, nor obey, the sword shall devour you.' Whence we prove that the sword was Christ, by not hearing whom they perished; who also in the Psalm demands their dispersion from the Father, saying: 'Scatter them in thy power.' Who again, pleading through Isaiah for their burning: 'For my sake,' he says, 'these things have been done to you; in anguish shall ye sleep.'
6:118
Therefore, since these things were foretold that the Jews should suffer on account of Christ, and since we find that they have suffered them, and behold them lingering in dispersion, it is manifest that these things befell the Jews on account of Christ, the sense of the Scriptures conspiring with the outcome of events and the order of the times. Or if Christ, on whose account these things were foretold that they should suffer, has not yet come, then when he shall have come, they shall suffer them. And where then is the daughter of Zion to be abandoned, who is not in Judaea today? Where the cities to be burned, which are already in heaps of ruins? Where the dispersion of the nation, which is already exiled? Restore the state of Judaea which Christ may find, and contend that another is to come. XIV. Learn now, from the abundance of your error, his leadership.
6:119
Duos dicimus Christi habitus a prophetis demonstratos, totidem adventus eius praenotatos: unum in humilitate, utique primum, cum tamquam ovis ad victimam deduci habebat et tamquam agnus ante tondentem sine voce sic non aperiens os, ne aspectu quidem honestus. Adnuntiavimus enim, inquit, de illo:
We say that two states of Christ were demonstrated by the prophets, and just as many of his comings were foretold: one in humility — the first, of course — when he was to be led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer, dumb, so opening not his mouth, not even comely in appearance. 'For we announced,' he says, 'concerning him:'
6:120
'as a little child, as a root in a thirsty ground; and he had no form nor glory, and we saw him, and he had no form nor comeliness, but his form was dishonoured, failing beyond the sons of men, a man set in the stroke and knowing how to bear infirmity' — namely, as one set by the Father for a stone of stumbling, and made a little lower by him than the angels, pronouncing himself a worm and no man, the shame of man and the outcast of the people.
6:121
Quae ignobilitatis argumenta primo adventui competunt sicut sublimitatis secundo, cum fiet iam non lapis offensionis nec petra scandali, sed lapis summus angularis post reprobationem adsumptus et sublimatus in consummationem et petra sane illa apud Danielem de monte praecisa quae imaginem saecularium regnorum comminuet et conteret. De quo secundo adventu eius prophetes: Et ecce cum nubibus caeli tamquam filius hominis veniens venit usque ad veterem dierum et aderat in conspectu eius et qui adsistebant adduxerunt illum;
These proofs of lowliness befit the first coming, just as those of loftiness befit the second, when he shall now be no more a stone of stumbling nor a rock of scandal, but the highest cornerstone, taken up after rejection and exalted unto consummation; and indeed that rock in Daniel, cut from the mountain, which shall crush and grind to pieces the image of the worldly kingdoms. Of which second coming of his the prophet says: 'And behold, with the clouds of heaven as it were the Son of man coming, he came even unto the Ancient of days, and was present in his sight; and those who stood by brought him forward;'
6:122
'and there was given unto him royal power, and all the nations of the earth according to their kind, and all glory serving him; and his power is eternal, which shall not be taken away, and his kingdom, which shall not be corrupted.' Then, of course, he shall have an honourable form and an unfailing comeliness beyond the sons of men — for 'timely in comeliness beyond the sons of men; grace,' he says, 'is poured out on thy lips, therefore hath God blessed thee for ever; gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, in thy timeliness and thy beauty' — when the Father also, after he had made him a little lower than the angels, crowned him with glory and honour, and subjected all things under his feet.
6:123
And then shall they know him whom they pierced, and shall beat their breasts, tribe unto tribe — namely because in time past they did not acknowledge him, set as he was in the humility of the human condition. 'And he is a man,' says Jeremiah, 'and who shall know him?' — because also 'his generation,' says Isaiah, 'who shall declare?' So also in Zechariah, [it says] in the person of Jesus — nay rather, in the very mystery of the name — Christ, the most true priest of the Father, is delineated in his own twofold state, unto his two comings:
6:124
first clothed in filthy garments — that is, in the indignity of passible and mortal flesh — when the devil also was set against him, namely as the instigator of Judas the traitor, who had tempted him even after his baptism; then, being stripped of his former filth, adorned with a long robe and a mitre and a clean turban — that is, of the second coming, since he is shown to have attained glory and honour.
6:125
Nor will you be able to call him the son of Josedech, who was in no way at all in filthy garments but was always adorned with priestly vesture, nor was ever deprived of the priestly office; but this Jesus is the Christ, the high priest of God the Father most high, who at his first coming came in human and passible form, in humility even unto the Passion, himself made also a victim through all things for us all; who after his resurrection, clothed with the long robe, is named a priest for ever of God the Father. For thus I will also give the interpretation of the two goats which were offered at the fast.
6:126
Nonne et illi utrumque ordinem Christi qui iam venit ostendunt, pares quidem atque consimiles propter eundem domini conspectum, quia non in alia venturus est forma, ut qui agnosci habet a quibus et laesus est; unus autem eorum circumdatus coccino maledictus et consputatus et convulsus et compunctus a populo extra civitatem abiciebatur in perditionem, manifestis notatus insignibus Christi passionis qui coccinea circumdatus veste et consputatus et omnibus contumeliis adflictus extra civitatem crucifixus est;
那兩隻羊豈不也顯明那已降臨之基督的兩重次序嗎?它們確實相似、極其相像,因為主是同一位相貌,因祂不會以另一個形體降臨,好叫那些曾傷害過祂的人能認出祂。它們中的一隻,被朱紅色所圍繞,被百姓咒詛、吐唾沫、撕裂、刺傷,被逐出城外以致滅亡,帶著基督受難的明顯記號——祂正是被朱紅色的衣服所圍繞、被吐唾沫、飽受一切凌辱,在城外被釘十字架;
Do not those two also show forth both orders of the Christ who has already come — alike indeed and very similar, on account of the same aspect of the Lord, because he is not to come in another form, as one who is to be recognized by those by whom he was also injured? Now one of them, girt about with scarlet, cursed and spat upon and mangled and pierced by the people, was cast forth outside the city unto perdition, marked with the manifest tokens of Christ's Passion — who, girt about with a scarlet garment and spat upon and afflicted with all insults, was crucified outside the city;
6:127
but the other, offered for sins and given as food only to the priests of the temple, marked the tokens of the second manifestation, because, all sins being expiated, the priests of the spiritual temple — that is, of the Church — should enjoy, as it were by a certain feasting of flesh, the grace of the Lord, while the rest fast from salvation. Therefore, since the first coming was sung as both obscured with very many figures and prostrated with every dishonour, but the second as both manifest and worthy of God, for this reason, gazing only on him whom they could easily both understand and believe — that is, the second, who is in honour and glory — not without cause were they deceived concerning the more obscure and certainly less honourable, that is, the first.
6:128
And so to this day they deny that their Christ has come, because he did not come in loftiness, while they are ignorant that he was first to come in humility. Let it suffice thus far to have traced meanwhile the order of Christ concerning these things, whereby he is proved to be such as he was announced to be, so that now, from this harmony of the divine Scriptures, [we may understand] that the things too which were foretold as future after Christ are, by divine disposition, to be believed as accomplished. For unless he had come, after whom the things were to be blotted out, in no way would the things have come to pass which were foretold as future at his coming. Therefore, if you behold all the nations emerging thenceforth from the depth of human error unto God the Creator and his Christ —
6:129
which you dare not deny was prophesied, because even if you denied it, at once the promise of the Father would meet you in the Psalms, as we have already said before, saying: 'Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee; ask of me, and I will give thee the nations for thine inheritance, and thy possession the ends of the earth.' Nor will you be able to claim Solomon, David's son, for this proclamation rather than Christ the Son of God, nor to say that the ends of the earth were promised to David's son — who reigned within Judaea alone — rather than to Christ the Son of God, who has now illumined the whole world with the rays of his Gospel. Furthermore, the throne for ever also befits Christ the Son of God rather than Solomon, a temporal king, of course, who reigned over Israel alone.
6:130
Edited by H. Tr nkle, 1964.
For today the nations invoke Christ, who did not know him, and the peoples today flee for refuge to Christ whom in time past they were ignorant of. You cannot contend that a thing is future which you see coming to pass. Either deny that these things were prophesied, when they are seen before your eyes, or deny that they are fulfilled, when they are read; or if you deny neither, they will have been fulfilled in him of whom they were prophesied. Edited by H. Tränkle, 1964. Transcribed by Roger Pearse, 2002.
