And in the second year of the reign of Nabouchodonosor it came about that the king fell into visions and dreams, and was troubled in his dream, and his sleep went from him. In the second year of the reign of Nabouchodonosor, Nabouchodonosor dreamed a dream, and his spirit was put out of itself, and his sleep went from him.
And the king commanded that the enchanters and the magicians and the sorcerers of the Chaldeans be brought in, to declare to the king his dreams; and they came and stood beside the king. And the king said to summon the enchanters and the magicians and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams; and they came and stood before the king.
And the king said to them: I have seen a dream, and my spirit was stirred; therefore I wish to know the dream. And the king said to them: I have dreamed, and my spirit was put out of itself to know the dream.
And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic: My lord king, live forever! Declare your dream to your servants, and we will tell you its interpretation. And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic: O king, live unto the ages! Do you tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.
And the king answered and said to the Chaldeans: If you do not report to me truly the dream and make clear to me its interpretation, you shall be made a public spectacle, and your goods shall be taken up into the royal treasury. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans: The word has gone from me. If you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be given over to destruction, and your houses shall be plundered.
But if you explain the dream to me and declare its interpretation, you shall receive gifts of every kind and be glorified by me. Make the dream clear to me, and interpret it. But if you make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and presents and much honour. Only report to me the dream and its interpretation.
And they answered a second time, saying: O king, tell the vision, and your servants will interpret accordingly. They answered a second time and said: Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare its interpretation.
And the king said to them: In truth I know that you are buying up time, inasmuch as you have seen that the matter has gone from me. Therefore just as I have ordered, so shall it be. The king answered and said: In truth I know that you are buying up time, because you have seen that the word has gone from me.
If you do not report the dream to me truly and make its interpretation clear, you shall meet with death; for you have conspired together to make up lying words before me until the time should change. Now then, if you tell me the matter which I saw in the night, I shall know that you will also make clear its interpretation. If therefore you do not declare the dream to me, I know that you have agreed together to speak before me a false and corrupt word until the time passes by. Tell me my dream, and I shall know that you will declare its interpretation to me.
And the Chaldeans answered before the king: No one on the earth will be able to tell the king what he has seen, as you ask; and no king and no potentate asks such a thing of any wise man or magician or Chaldean. The Chaldeans answered before the king and say: There is no man on the dry land who will be able to make known the king's matter, inasmuch as no great king or ruler asks such a matter of an enchanter, a magician, and a Chaldean.
And the word which you seek, O king, is weighty and remarkable; and there is no one who will make these things clear to the king, except an angel, whose dwelling is not with any flesh; whence it cannot come about as you suppose. For the word which the king asks is weighty, and there is no other who will declare it before the king except gods, whose dwelling is not with any flesh.
Then the king, becoming gloomy and deeply grieved, gave orders to lead out all the wise men of Babylonia. Then the king, in anger and great wrath, said to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
And it was decreed to kill them all; and Daniel was sought, and all those with him, that they might be destroyed along with them. And the decree went out, and the wise men were being killed; and they sought Daniel and his friends to do away with them.
Then Daniel spoke the counsel and judgement that he had to Ariochēs the king's chief of the guard, whom he had ordered to lead out the sophists of Babylonia. Then Daniel answered with counsel and judgement to Arioch the king's chief of the guard, who had gone out to do away with the wise men of Babylon.
And he inquired of him, saying: Concerning what is this bitter decree issued by the king? Then Ariochēs made the ordinance known to Daniel. O ruler of the king, concerning what has this shameless decree gone forth from the king's presence? And Arioch made the matter known to Daniel.
And Daniel went in quickly to the king and requested that time be given him by the king, and that he might make everything clear before the king. And Daniel went in and requested the king to give him time, and that he might declare its interpretation to the king.
Then Daniel went away to his house and showed everything to Ananias and Misael and Azarias his companions. And Daniel went into his house and made the matter known to Ananias and Misael and Azarias his friends;
and he enjoined a fast and supplication and a plea for succour to be sought from the Lord the Most High concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and those with him might not be handed over to destruction together with the sophists of Babylon. And they were seeking mercies from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
Then to Daniel, in a vision that very night, the king's mystery was made manifest plainly; then Daniel blessed the Lord the Most High. Then to Daniel in a vision of the night the mystery was revealed, and he blessed the God of heaven.
And crying aloud he said: The name of the great Lord shall be blessed forever, for the wisdom and the majesty are his. Daniel, and he said: May the name of God be blessed from age unto age, for the wisdom and the understanding are his.
And he changes seasons and times, removing kings and establishing them, giving wisdom to the wise and understanding to those who are in knowledge. And he changes seasons and times; he establishes kings and removes them, giving wisdom to the wise and prudence to those who know understanding.
revealing the deep and dark things, and knowing the things in the darkness and the things in the light; and with him is a resting place. He reveals deep and hidden things, knowing the things in the darkness, and the light is with him.
To you, Lord of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and prudence; and now you have made known to me all that I asked, so as to make these things clear to the king. To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and power; and now you have made known to me what we asked of you, and you have made known to me the king's vision.
And Daniel, going in to Arioch, who had been appointed by the king to kill all the sophists of Babylonia, said to him: Do not destroy the sophists of Babylonia; but bring me in to the king, and I will make every detail clear to the king. And Daniel came to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him: Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; but bring me in before the king, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.
Then Arioch in haste brought Daniel in to the king and said to him: I have found a wise man from the captivity of the sons of Judea, who will make every detail clear to the king. Then Arioch in haste brought Daniel in before the king and said to him: I have found a man from the sons of the captivity of Judea, who will declare the interpretation to the king.
And the king answered and said to Daniel, who was called in Chaldean Baltasar: Will you be able to make clear to me the vision which I saw and its interpretation? And the king answered and said to Daniel whose name was Baltasar: Are you able to declare to me the dream which I saw and its interpretation?
And Daniel, crying aloud before the king, said: The mystery which the king has seen — its disclosure is not for wise men and sorcerers and enchanters and gazarenes. And Daniel answered before the king and says: The mystery which the king asks — it is not for wise men, magicians, enchanters, gazarenes to declare to the king.
But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, who has made clear to king Nabouchodonosor what must happen in the last days. O king, live forever! Your dream and the vision of your head upon your bed is this: But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to king Nabouchodonosor what must happen in the last days. Your dream and the visions of your head upon your bed are this:
You, O king, as you lay upon your bed, saw all that must happen in the last days; and he who reveals mysteries made clear to you what must happen. You, O king — your thoughts came up upon your bed as to what must happen after these things; and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what must happen.
And to me also this mystery was made manifest not by reason of wisdom that is in me beyond all human beings, but for the sake of its being made clear to the king; what you conceived in your heart in knowledge was signified to me. And as for me, this mystery was revealed not by wisdom that is in me beyond all the living, but for the sake of making the interpretation known to the king, that you may know the thoughts of your heart.
And you, O king, saw, and behold, a single image; and that image was exceedingly great, and its appearance surpassing; it stood before you, and the appearance of the image was fearful. You, O king, were beholding, and behold, a single image — great was that image, and its appearance surpassing, standing before your face; and its aspect was fearful.
And its head was of fine gold; the breast and the arms silver; the belly and the thighs bronze; The image whose head was of fine gold, its hands and the breast and its arms silver, the belly and the thighs bronze,
You have seen — until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it struck the image on the feet, the iron and earthenware ones, and ground them to powder. You were watching until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it struck the image on the feet, the iron and earthenware ones, and crushed them utterly.
Then the iron and the earthenware and the bronze and the silver and the gold were all at once made fine, and it became finer than chaff on a threshing floor, and the wind blew them away so that nothing at all was left of them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and struck the whole earth. Then the earthenware, the iron, the bronze, the silver, the gold were crushed all at once, and they became like dust from a summer threshing floor, and the great rush of the wind carried them off, and no place was found for them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
You, O king, are king of kings, and to you the Lord of heaven has given the dominion and the kingdom and the might and the honour and the glory. You, O king, are king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given a kingdom strong and mighty and honoured.
In all the inhabited world — from human beings and wild beasts and the birds of heaven to the fish of the sea — he has handed them over under your hands, to rule over all. You are the head of gold. In every place where the sons of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the birds of heaven he has given into your hand, and has made you lord of all. You are the head of gold.
And after you there shall arise a kingdom lesser than you, and a third kingdom, another one, of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. And after you there shall arise another kingdom, inferior to you, and a third kingdom, which is the bronze, which shall rule over all the earth.
And a fourth kingdom, strong as the iron that subdues all things and cuts down every tree; and the whole earth shall be shaken. And a fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: in the manner that iron crushes and subdues all things, so shall it crush and subdue all.
And as you saw its feet, part of them potter's earthenware and part of them iron, another kingdom shall be in it, divided in two, just as you saw the iron mingled together with the clay earthenware. And whereas you saw the feet and the toes, part earthenware and part iron, the kingdom shall be divided, and there shall be in it something of the root of iron, in the manner that you saw the iron mingled with the earthenware.
And the toes of the feet, part of them iron and part of them earthenware: part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part shall be broken. And the toes of the feet, part of them iron and part of them earthenware: part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part of it shall be breaking apart.
And as you saw the iron mingled together with the clay earthenware, they shall be mixed together for the begetting of men, but they shall not be of one mind nor well disposed toward one another, just as neither can iron be blended with earthenware. Whereas you saw the iron mingled with the earthenware, they shall be mixed together in the seed of men, and they shall not cleave together, this one with that one, just as iron does not mix with earthenware.
And in the times of those kings the God of heaven shall set up another kingdom, which shall be for ever and shall not be corrupted; and this kingdom shall by no means allow another nation, but shall strike and wipe out these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall raise up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and his kingdom shall not be left to another people. It shall crush and winnow away all the kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Just as you saw a stone cut from a mountain without hands, and it threshed to pieces the earthenware, the iron, the bronze, the silver and the gold: the great God has signified to the king the things that shall be in the last of the days. The vision is exact, and the interpretation of it is trustworthy. In the manner that you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain without hands, and it crushed the earthenware, the iron, the bronze, the silver, the gold: the great God has made known to the king what must come to pass after these things. The dream is true, and its interpretation trustworthy.
Then Nabouchodonosor the king fell upon his face to the ground and did obeisance to Daniel, and he gave orders that sacrifices and drink offerings be made to him. Then king Nabouchodonosor fell upon his face and did obeisance to Daniel, and he said that a grain offering and fragrant offerings should be poured out to him.
And the king called out to Daniel and said: 'Truly your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, the one who alone discloses hidden mysteries, for you have been able to make this mystery plain.' And the king answered and said to Daniel: 'Truly your God, he himself is God of gods and Lord of kings, and one who reveals mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.'
Then king Nabouchodonosor magnified Daniel, and gave him great and many gifts, and set him over the affairs of Babylonia, and appointed him ruler and leader of all the sages of Babylonia. And the king magnified Daniel and gave him great and many gifts, and set him over the whole province of Babylon, and made him chief of satraps over all the wise men of Babylon.
And Daniel requested of the king that Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago be appointed over the affairs of Babylonia; and Daniel was in the royal court. And Daniel made request of the king, and he set Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago over the works of the province of Babylon; and Daniel was in the king's court.
