In the first year of Belshazzar's reign over the country of Babylonia, Daniel saw a vision at his head upon his bed; then Daniel wrote down the vision which he saw as chief points of words. In the first year of Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans, Daniel saw a dream, and the visions of his head upon his bed; and he wrote down the dream.
Upon my bed I was watching in the sleep of the night, and behold, four winds of heaven fell upon the great sea. I Daniel was watching in my vision of the night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were striking against the great sea.
And four beasts were coming up out of the sea, differing one from another. And four great beasts were coming up out of the sea, differing from one another.
The first was like a lioness having wings like an eagle's. I watched until its wings were plucked and it was lifted up from the earth and set upon human feet, and a human heart was given to it. The first was like a lioness, and it had wings like an eagle's. I watched until its wings were plucked out and it was lifted up from the earth and set upon a man's feet, and a man's heart was given to it.
And behold, after it another beast having the likeness of a bear, and it stood upon one side, and three ribs were in its mouth; and thus it said: Arise, devour much flesh. And behold, a second beast, like a bear, and it stood toward one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they were saying to it: Arise, eat much flesh.
And after these things I watched another beast like a leopard, and four wings were spread above it, and the beast had four heads; and a tongue was given to it. After this I watched, and behold another beast like a leopard, and it had four wings of a bird above it, and the beast had four heads; and authority was given to it.
And after these things I watched in the vision of the night a fourth beast, fearful, and its terror surpassing in strength, having great iron teeth, eating and pounding, trampling round about with its feet, behaving differently from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns. After this I watched, and behold a fourth beast, fearful and astounding and exceedingly strong, and its teeth were great and of iron, eating and crushing fine, and it trampled with its feet what remained; and it was exceedingly different from all the beasts before it, and it had ten horns.
[Old Greek] And there were many counsels in its horns. And behold, another single small horn sprang up among its horns, and three of the former horns were withered because of it. And behold, there were eyes like human eyes in this horn, and a mouth speaking great things, and it was making war against the holy ones. [Theodotion] I was considering its horns, and behold, another little horn came up among them, and three of the horns that were before it were uprooted from before it. And behold, there were eyes like the eyes of a man in this horn, and a mouth speaking great things.
[Old Greek] I was watching until thrones were set in place, and an Ancient of Days was seated, wearing a covering like snow, and the hair of his head like pure white wool; the throne was like a flame of fire. [Theodotion] I was watching until thrones were set in place, and an Ancient of Days was seated, and his garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was a flame of fire, his wheels a blazing fire.
[Old Greek] And a river of fire went out before his face. A thousand thousands attended him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood beside him. And the court sat, and books were opened. [Theodotion] A river of fire drew on before him. A thousand thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood beside him. The court sat, and books were opened.
[Old Greek] Then I was watching the sound of the great words which the horn was speaking; and the beast was beaten to death, and its body perished and was given over to the burning of fire. [Theodotion] Then I was watching, because of the sound of the great words which that horn was speaking, until the beast was slain and perished, and its body was given over to the burning of fire.
[Old Greek] And he removed those around it from their authority, yet a time of life was given to them until a time and a season. [Theodotion] And as for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed, yet length of life was given to them until a season and a season.
[Old Greek] I was watching in the vision of the night, and behold, upon the clouds of heaven one like a son of man was coming, and he was present as an Ancient of Days, and those who stood by were present with him. [Theodotion] I was watching in the vision of the night, and behold, with the clouds of heaven one like a son of man was coming, and he reached as far as the Ancient of Days and was brought before him.
[Old Greek] And authority was given to him, and all the nations of the earth according to their kindreds, and all glory serving him. And his authority is an everlasting authority, which shall never be taken away, and his kingdom shall never be corrupted. [Theodotion] And to him were given the dominion and the honour and the kingdom, and all the peoples, tribes and tongues shall serve him. His authority is an everlasting authority, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed.
[Old Greek] And I, Daniel, was made weary at these things, in the vision of the night. [Theodotion] My spirit shuddered within my frame, I Daniel, and the visions of my head troubled me.
[Old Greek] I approached one of those standing there and sought from him the exact meaning concerning all these things; and answering he tells me, and he made plain to me the judgment of the words. [Theodotion] And I approached one of those who stood there and sought from him the exact meaning concerning all these things; and he told me the exact meaning and made known to me the interpretation of the words.
[Old Greek] These great beasts are four kingdoms which shall perish from the earth. [Theodotion] These four great beasts are four kingdoms which shall arise upon the earth, and which shall be taken away.
[Old Greek] And the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and shall hold the kingdom for ever, and for ever and ever. [Theodotion] And the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and shall hold it for ever and ever.
[Old Greek] Then I wished to ascertain exactly concerning the fourth beast, which destroyed everything and was exceedingly fearful. And behold, its teeth were of iron and its claws of bronze, devouring all round about and trampling with its feet. [Theodotion] And I sought exactly concerning the fourth beast, because it was different from every beast, exceedingly fearful. Its teeth were of iron and its claws of bronze, eating and crushing small, and what was left over it trampled with its feet.
[Old Greek] And concerning its ten horns that were upon the head, and the other single one that grew on, because of which three fell away. And that horn had eyes and a mouth speaking great things, and its appearance surpassed the others. [Theodotion] And concerning its ten horns that were on its head, and the other one that came up and shook off three of the former ones; that horn which had the eyes and a mouth speaking great things, and whose appearance was greater than the rest.
[Old Greek] And I observed that horn waging war against the holy ones and routing them. [Theodotion] I was watching, and that horn was making war with the holy ones and prevailed against them.
[Old Greek] until the Ancient of Days came, and he gave judgment to the holy ones of the Most High; and the time was given, and the holy ones took possession of the kingdom. [Theodotion] until the Ancient of Days came and gave judgment to the holy ones of the Most High, and the time arrived, and the holy ones took possession of the kingdom.
[Old Greek] And it was said to me concerning the fourth beast: There shall be a fourth kingdom upon the earth, which shall differ from all the earth, and shall throw it into turmoil and grind it down. [Theodotion] And he said: The fourth beast — there shall be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which shall surpass all the kingdoms and devour all the earth and trample it down and cut it to pieces.
[Old Greek] And the ten horns of the kingdom are ten kings who shall stand up; and the other king shall stand up after these, and he shall surpass in evils those who were first, and he shall humble three kings. [Theodotion] And its ten horns are ten kings who shall arise; and after them another shall arise who shall surpass in evils all those who were before, and he shall humble three kings.
[Old Greek] And he shall speak words against the Most High and shall wear down the holy ones of the Most High, and he shall undertake to alter seasons and law. And all things shall be delivered into his hands until a time and times and half a time. [Theodotion] And he shall speak words against the Most High and shall wear out the holy ones of the Most High, and he shall purpose to alter seasons and law. And it shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.
[Old Greek] And the judgment shall sit, and they shall destroy his authority, and they shall resolve to defile and to destroy him unto the end. [Theodotion] And the court shall sit, and they shall remove his dominion, to abolish and to destroy it unto the end.
[Old Greek] And the kingdom and the authority and their majesty, and the rule of all the kingdoms under heaven, he gave to the holy people of the Most High, to reign an everlasting kingdom; and all the authorities shall be subjected to him and shall obey him. [Theodotion] And the kingdom and the authority and the majesty of the kings that are under the whole heaven were given to the holy ones of the Most High; and his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all the rulers shall serve him and shall obey him.
[Old Greek] Unto the overthrow of the matter. I, Daniel, was greatly seized with astonishment, and my condition was altered upon me; and I fixed the word in my heart. [Theodotion] Thus far the end of the matter. I, Daniel — my thoughts greatly troubled me, and my form was changed upon me; and I kept the word in my heart.
