5:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְהִתְנַבִּ֞י חַגַּ֣י (נביאה ) [נְבִיָּ֗א ] וּזְכַרְיָ֤ה בַר ־עִדּוֹא֙ נְבִיַּאיָּ֔א עַל ־יְה֣וּדָיֵ֔א דִּ֥י בִיה֖וּד וּבִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם בְּשֻׁ֛ם אֱלָ֥הּ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֲלֵיהֽוֹן ׃ {ס}
καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν Αγγαιος ὁ προφήτης καὶ Ζαχαριας ὁ τοῦ Αδδω προφητείαν ἐπὶ τοὺς Ιουδαίους τοὺς ἐν Ιουδα καὶ Ιερουσαλημ ἐν ὀνόματι θεοῦ Ισραηλ ἐπ’ αὐτούς
Prophetaverunt autem Aggaeus propheta , et Zacharias filius Addo , prophetantes ad Judaeos qui erant in Judaea et Jerusalem , in nomine Dei Israël .
Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.
5:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ בֵּאדַ֡יִן קָ֠מוּ זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בַּר ־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל֙ וְיֵשׁ֣וּעַ בַּר ־יֽוֹצָדָ֔ק וְשָׁרִ֣יו לְמִבְנֵ֔א בֵּ֥ית אֱלָהָ֖א דִּ֣י בִירֽוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וְעִמְּה֛וֹן נְבִיַּאיָּ֥א דִֽי ־אֱלָהָ֖א מְסָעֲדִ֥ין לְהֽוֹן ׃ {פ}
τότε ἀνέστησαν Ζοροβαβελ ὁ τοῦ Σαλαθιηλ καὶ Ἰησοῦς ὁ υἱὸς Ιωσεδεκ καὶ ἤρξαντο οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ τὸν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ μετ’ αὐτῶν οἱ προφῆται τοῦ θεοῦ βοηθοῦντες αὐτοῖς
Tunc surrexerunt Zorobabel filius Salathiel , et Josue filius Josedec , et coeperunt aedificare templum Dei in Jerusalem , et cum eis prophetae Dei adjuvantes eos .
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.
5:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ בֵּהּ ־זִמְנָא֩ אֲתָ֨ה עֲלֵיה֜וֹן תַּ֠תְּנַ֠י פַּחַ֧ת עֲבַֽר ־נַהֲרָ֛ה וּשְׁתַ֥ר בּוֹזְנַ֖י וּכְנָוָתְה֑וֹן וְכֵן֙ אָמְרִ֣ין לְהֹ֔ם מַן ־שָׂ֨ם לְכֹ֜ם טְעֵ֗ם בַּיְתָ֤א דְנָה֙ לִבְּנֵ֔א וְאֻשַּׁרְנָ֥א דְנָ֖ה לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה ׃
ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἦλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς Θανθαναι ἔπαρχος πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ Σαθαρβουζανα καὶ οἱ σύνδουλοι αὐτῶν καὶ τοῖα εἶπαν αὐτοῖς τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι
In ipso autem tempore venit ad eos Thathanai , qui erat dux trans flumen , et Stharbuzanai , et consiliarii eorum : sicque dixerunt eis : Quis dedit vobis consilium ut domum hanc aedificaretis , et muros ejus instauraretis ?
At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, came to them, with Shetharbozenai and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?”
5:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ אֱדַ֥יִן כְּנֵ֖מָא אֲמַ֣רְנָא לְּהֹ֑ם מַן ־אִנּוּן֙ שְׁמָהָ֣ת גֻּבְרַיָּ֔א דִּֽי ־דְנָ֥ה בִנְיָנָ֖א בָּנַֽיִן ׃
τότε ταῦτα εἴποσαν αὐτοῖς τίνα ἐστὶν τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν οἰκοδομούντων τὴν πόλιν ταύτην
Ad quod respondimus eis , quae essent nomina hominum auctorum aedificationis illius .
They also asked for the names of the men who were making this building.
5:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְעֵ֣ין אֱלָהֲהֹ֗ם הֲוָת֙ עַל ־שָׂבֵ֣י יְהוּדָיֵ֔א וְלָא ־בַטִּ֣לוּ הִמּ֔וֹ עַד ־טַעְמָ֖א לְדָרְיָ֣וֶשׁ יְהָ֑ךְ וֶאֱדַ֛יִן יְתִיב֥וּן נִשְׁתְּוָנָ֖א עַל ־דְּנָֽה ׃ {פ}
καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν Ιουδα καὶ οὐ κατήργησαν αὐτούς ἕως γνώμη τῷ Δαρείῳ ἀπηνέχθη καὶ τότε ἀπεστάλη τῷ φορολόγῳ ὑπὲρ τούτου
Oculus autem Dei eorum factus est super senes Judaeorum , et non potuerunt inhibere eos . Placuitque ut res ad Darium referretur , et tunc satisfacerent adversus accusationem illam .
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they didn’t make them cease until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.
5:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ פַּרְשֶׁ֣גֶן אִ֠גַּרְתָּ֠א דִּֽי ־שְׁלַ֞ח תַּתְּנַ֣י ׀ פַּחַ֣ת עֲבַֽר ־נַהֲרָ֗ה וּשְׁתַ֤ר בּוֹזְנַי֙ וּכְנָ֣וָתֵ֔הּ אֲפַ֨רְסְכָיֵ֔א דִּ֖י בַּעֲבַ֣ר נַהֲרָ֑ה עַל ־דָּרְיָ֖וֶשׁ מַלְכָּֽא ׃
διασάφησις ἐπιστολῆς ἧς ἀπέστειλεν Θανθαναι ὁ ἔπαρχος τοῦ πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ Σαθαρβουζανα καὶ οἱ σύνδουλοι αὐτῶν Αφαρσαχαῖοι οἱ ἐν τῷ πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ Δαρείῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ
Exemplar epistolae , quam misit Thathanai dux regionis trans flumen , et Stharbuzanai , et consiliatores ejus Arphasachaei , qui erant trans flumen , ad Darium regem .
The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.
5:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ פִּתְגָמָ֖א שְׁלַ֣חוּ עֲל֑וֹהִי וְכִדְנָה֙ כְּתִ֣יב בְּגַוֵּ֔הּ לְדָרְיָ֥וֶשׁ מַלְכָּ֖א שְׁלָמָ֥א כֹֽלָּא ׃ {ס}
ῥῆσιν ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ τάδε γέγραπται ἐν αὐτῷ Δαρείῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ εἰρήνη πᾶσα
Sermo , quem miserant ei , sic scriptus erat : Dario regi pax omnis .
They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.
5:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ יְדִ֣יעַ ׀ לֶהֱוֵ֣א לְמַלְכָּ֗א דִּֽי ־אֲזַ֜לְנָא לִיה֤וּד מְדִֽינְתָּא֙ לְבֵית֙ אֱלָהָ֣א רַבָּ֔א וְה֤וּא מִתְבְּנֵא֙ אֶ֣בֶן גְּלָ֔ל וְאָ֖ע מִתְּשָׂ֣ם בְּכֻתְלַיָּ֑א וַעֲבִ֥ידְתָּא דָ֛ךְ אׇסְפַּ֥רְנָא מִתְעַבְדָ֖א וּמַצְלַ֥ח בְּיֶדְהֹֽם ׃
γνωστὸν ἔστω τῷ βασιλεῖ ὅτι ἐπορεύθημεν εἰς τὴν Ιουδαίαν χώραν εἰς οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ μεγάλου καὶ αὐτὸς οἰκοδομεῖται λίθοις ἐκλεκτοῖς καὶ ξύλα ἐντίθεται ἐν τοῖς τοίχοις καὶ τὸ ἔργον ἐκεῖνο ἐπιδέξιον γίνεται καὶ εὐοδοῦται ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν
Notum sit regi , isse nos ad Judaeam provinciam , ad domum Dei magni , quae aedificatur lapide impolito , et ligna ponuntur in parietibus : opusque illud diligenter exstruitur , et crescit in manibus eorum .
Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.
5:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ אֱדַ֗יִן שְׁאֵ֙לְנָא֙ לְשָׂבַיָּ֣א אִלֵּ֔ךְ כְּנֵ֖מָא אֲמַ֣רְנָא לְּהֹ֑ם מַן ־שָׂ֨ם לְכֹ֜ם טְעֵ֗ם בַּיְתָ֤א דְנָה֙ לְמִבְנְיָ֔ה וְאֻשַּׁרְנָ֥א דְנָ֖ה לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה ׃
τότε ἠρωτήσαμεν τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους ἐκείνους καὶ οὕτως εἴπαμεν αὐτοῖς τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον οἰκοδομῆσαι καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι
Interrogavimus ergo senes illos , et ita diximus eis : Quis dedit vobis potestatem ut domum hanc aedificaretis , et muros hos instauraretis ?
Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”
5:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְאַ֧ף שְׁמָהָתְהֹ֛ם שְׁאֵ֥לְנָא לְּהֹ֖ם לְהוֹדָעוּתָ֑ךְ דִּ֛י נִכְתֻּ֥ב שֻׁם ־גֻּבְרַיָּ֖א דִּ֥י בְרָאשֵׁיהֹֽם ׃ {פ}
καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν ἠρωτήσαμεν αὐτοὺς γνωρίσαι σοι ὥστε γράψαι σοι τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν ἀρχόντων αὐτῶν
Sed et nomina eorum quaesivimus ab eis , ut nuntiaremus tibi : scripsimusque nomina eorum virorum , qui sunt principes in eis .
We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.
5:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ וּכְנֵ֥מָא פִתְגָמָ֖א הֲתִיב֣וּנָא לְמֵמַ֑ר אֲנַ֣חְנָא הִמּ֡וֹ עַבְד֩וֹהִי֩ דִֽי ־אֱלָ֨הּ שְׁמַיָּ֜א וְאַרְעָ֗א וּבָנַ֤יִן בַּיְתָא֙ דִּֽי ־הֲוָ֨א בְנֵ֜ה מִקַּדְמַ֤ת דְּנָה֙ שְׁנִ֣ין שַׂגִּיאָ֔ן וּמֶ֤לֶךְ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ רַ֔ב בְּנָ֖הִי וְשַׁכְלְלֵֽהּ ׃
καὶ τοιοῦτο ῥῆμα ἀπεκρίθησαν ἡμῖν λέγοντες ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν δοῦλοι τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ οἰκοδομοῦμεν τὸν οἶκον ὃς ἦν ᾠκοδομημένος πρὸ τούτου ἔτη πολλά καὶ βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ισραηλ μέγας ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτὸν καὶ κατηρτίσατο αὐτὸν
Hujuscemodi autem sermonem responderunt nobis dicentes : Nos sumus servi Dei caeli et terrae , et aedificamus templum , quod erat exstructum ante hos annos multos , quodque rex Israël magnus aedificaverat , et exstruxerat .
Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.
5:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ לָהֵ֗ן מִן ־דִּ֨י הַרְגִּ֤זוּ אֲבָהָתַ֙נָא֙ לֶאֱלָ֣הּ שְׁמַיָּ֔א יְהַ֣ב הִמּ֔וֹ בְּיַ֛ד נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ ־בָּבֶ֖ל (כסדיא ) [כַּסְדָּאָ֑ה ] וּבַיְתָ֤ה דְנָה֙ סַתְרֵ֔הּ וְעַמָּ֖ה הַגְלִ֥י לְבָבֶֽל ׃ {פ}
αὐτοῖς ἀφ’ ὅτε δὲ παρώργισαν οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν τὸν θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας Ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος τοῦ Χαλδαίου καὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον κατέλυσεν καὶ τὸν λαὸν ἀπῴκισεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα
Postquam autem ad iracundiam provocaverunt patres nostri Deum caeli , tradidit eos in manus Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis Chaldaei , domum quoque hanc destruxit , et populum ejus transtulit in Babylonem .
But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people away into Babylon.
5:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ בְּרַם֙ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת חֲדָ֔ה לְכ֥וֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּ֖א דִּ֣י בָבֶ֑ל כּ֤וֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּא֙ שָׂ֣ם טְעֵ֔ם בֵּית ־אֱלָהָ֥א דְנָ֖ה לִבְּנֵֽא ׃
ἀλλ’ ἐν ἔτει πρώτῳ Κύρου τοῦ βασιλέως Κῦρος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔθετο γνώμην τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦτον οἰκοδομηθῆναι
Anno autem primo Cyri regis Babylonis , Cyrus rex proposuit edictum ut domus Dei haec aedificaretur .
But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.
5:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְ֠אַ֠ף מָאנַיָּ֣א דִֽי ־בֵית ־אֱלָהָא֮ דִּ֣י דַהֲבָ֣ה וְכַסְפָּא֒ דִּ֣י נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֗ר הַנְפֵּק֙ מִן ־הֵֽיכְלָא֙ דִּ֣י בִֽירוּשְׁלֶ֔ם וְהֵיבֵ֣ל הִמּ֔וֹ לְהֵיכְלָ֖א דִּ֣י בָבֶ֑ל הַנְפֵּ֨ק הִמּ֜וֹ כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּ֗א מִן ־הֵֽיכְלָא֙ דִּ֣י בָבֶ֔ל וִיהִ֙יבוּ֙ לְשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֣ר שְׁמֵ֔הּ דִּ֥י פֶחָ֖ה שָׂמֵֽהּ ׃
καὶ τὰ σκεύη τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ χρυσᾶ καὶ τὰ ἀργυρᾶ ἃ Ναβουχοδονοσορ ἐξήνεγκεν ἀπὸ οἴκου τοῦ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἀπήνεγκεν αὐτὰ εἰς ναὸν τοῦ βασιλέως ἐξήνεγκεν αὐτὰ Κῦρος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀπὸ ναοῦ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἔδωκεν τῷ Σασαβασαρ τῷ θησαυροφύλακι τῷ ἐπὶ τοῦ θησαυροῦ
Nam et vasa templi Dei aurea et argentea , quae Nabuchodonosor tulerat de templo , quod erat in Jerusalem , et asportaverat ea in templum Babylonis , protulit Cyrus rex de templo Babylonis , et data sunt Sassabasar vocabulo , quem et principem constituit ,
The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.
5:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַאֲמַר ־לֵ֓הּ ׀ (אלה ) [אֵ֚ל ] מָֽאנַיָּ֔א שֵׂ֚א אֵֽזֶל ־אֲחֵ֣ת הִמּ֔וֹ בְּהֵיכְלָ֖א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וּבֵ֥ית אֱלָהָ֖א יִתְבְּנֵ֥א עַל ־אַתְרֵֽהּ ׃ {פ}
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πάντα τὰ σκεύη λαβὲ καὶ πορεύου θὲς αὐτὰ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τῷ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ εἰς τὸν ἑαυτῶν τόπον
dixitque ei : Haec vasa tolle , et vade , et pone ea in templo , quod est in Jerusalem , et domus Dei aedificetur in loco suo .
He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’
5:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ אֱדַ֙יִן֙ שֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֣ר דֵּ֔ךְ אֲתָ֗א יְהַ֧ב אֻשַּׁיָּ֛א דִּי ־בֵ֥ית אֱלָהָ֖א דִּ֣י בִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וּמִן ־אֱדַ֧יִן וְעַד ־כְּעַ֛ן מִתְבְּנֵ֖א וְלָ֥א שְׁלִֽם ׃
τότε Σασαβασαρ ἐκεῖνος ἦλθεν καὶ ἔδωκεν θεμελίους τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἀπὸ τότε ἕως τοῦ νῦν ᾠκοδομήθη καὶ οὐκ ἐτελέσθη
Tunc itaque Sassabasar ille venit et posuit fundamenta templi Dei in Jerusalem , et ex eo tempore usque nunc aedificatur , et necdum completum est .
Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now it has been being built, and yet it is not completed.
5:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ וּכְעַ֞ן הֵ֧ן עַל ־מַלְכָּ֣א טָ֗ב יִ֠תְבַּקַּ֠ר בְּבֵ֨ית גִּנְזַיָּ֜א דִּי ־מַלְכָּ֣א תַמָּה֮ דִּ֣י בְּבָבֶל֒ הֵ֣ן אִיתַ֗י דִּֽי ־מִן ־כּ֤וֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּא֙ שִׂ֣ים טְעֵ֔ם לְמִבְנֵ֛א בֵּית ־אֱלָהָ֥א דֵ֖ךְ בִּירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וּרְע֥וּת מַלְכָּ֛א עַל ־דְּנָ֖ה יִשְׁלַ֥ח עֲלֶֽינָא ׃ {פ}
καὶ νῦν εἰ ἐπὶ τὸν βασιλέα ἀγαθόν ἐπισκεπήτω ἐν οἴκῳ τῆς γάζης τοῦ βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος ὅπως γνῷς ὅτι ἀπὸ βασιλέως Κύρου ἐτέθη γνώμη οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκεῖνον τὸν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ γνοὺς ὁ βασιλεὺς περὶ τούτου πεμψάτω πρὸς ἡμᾶς
Nunc ergo si videtur regi bonum , recenseat in bibliotheca regis , quae est in Babylone , utrumnam a Cyro rege jussum fuerit ut aedificaretur domus Dei in Jerusalem , et voluntatem regis super hac re mittat ad nos .
Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
