'Despise not prophesyings.'
11:2
'Abstain from every form of evil.'
11:3
有一團濃厚的昏霧、幽暗與烏雲,籠罩了全地;
A certain thick mist, and gloom, and cloud have been poured out over all the earth;
11:4
and, making this plain, the Apostle said:
11:5
and again, 'But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.'
11:6
Since, then, it is night, so to speak, and moonless, and in this night we are walking, God has given us a bright lamp, having kindled the grace of the Holy Spirit in our souls.
11:7
但這光,有些人領受了,就使它更加明亮輝煌,如保羅,如彼得,如那一切聖徒;
But this light some, having received it, made yet brighter and more radiant—such as Paul, such as Peter, such as all those holy men;
11:8
while others actually quenched it—as the five virgins, as those who made shipwreck concerning the faith, as the man who committed fornication in Corinth, as the Galatians who were turned aside.
11:9
為這緣故,保羅如今說:「不要銷滅聖靈的感動」,就是說,不要銷滅那恩賜;
For this reason Paul now says, 'Quench not the Spirit'—that is, the gift of grace;
11:10
for it was his custom thus to call the gift of the Spirit.
11:11
And an unclean life quenches it.
11:12
正如有人在這燈火上潑水或撒塵土,便把火熄滅了;即便他不做這些事,只要把油取走,火也照樣熄滅;
For just as, in the case of this lamplight, a man who pours water or dust upon it puts out the light—and even if he does none of these things, yet if he takes away the oil the flame goes out—
11:13
so likewise it is with the gift of grace.
11:14
因為你若把屬地的掛慮、和那些流逝之事的憂慮傾倒在它上面,你就熄滅了聖靈;
For whether you pour earthly cares and the anxieties of transient affairs upon it, you have quenched the Spirit;
11:15
or whether you yourself do no such thing, but a temptation coming from some other quarter assails you fiercely, like a gust of wind, and if the flame is not strong, or does not have abundant oil, or if you do not stop up the vent-hole, or do not shut the door, then all is lost.
11:16
But what is the vent-hole? As in the case of the lamp, so also with us, the vent-hole is the eye and the ear.
11:17
Do not let a violent wind of wickedness fall upon these, since it has put out the lamp; but block it up with the fear of God.
11:18
Shut it, close it fast, so that the light may both give its light and repel the assault from without.
11:19
譬如說:有人侮辱了你麼?有人辱罵了你麼?你就閉上口;
For instance: has someone insulted you? has he reviled you? Do you shut your mouth;
11:20
for if you open it, you have fanned the wind into flame.
11:21
你豈沒有在房屋裡看見過麼?當兩扇門正對正、成一直線立著,又有強風吹來,那時你若把一扇門關上,使沒有對流的氣,風就毫無力量,它大部分的猛勢都被削減了。如今也是這樣:這裡有兩扇門,就是你的口,和那侮辱你、像酒醉發狂般辱罵你之人的口;
Do you not observe in houses, when two doors stand directly opposite and in a straight line, and a strong wind is blowing, how, if you shut the one so that no counter-draught arises, the wind has no force, but the greater part of its strength is cut off? So it is now also: there are two doors, your mouth, and the mouth of the one who insults and rails against you in his drunken frenzy;
11:22
你若關上你的口,不給它對流之氣,你就把那整股狂風熄滅了;
if you shut yours and give it no counter-draught, you have quenched the whole blast;
11:23
but if you open it, it becomes uncontrollable.
11:24
Let us not, therefore, quench it.
11:25
But it is possible for it often to be quenched even when nothing presses upon it from without,
11:26
when the oil runs short—when we do not practise almsgiving, the Spirit is quenched.
11:27
因為它原是從神的憐憫臨到你的;
For indeed it came to you from the mercy of God;
11:28
隨後,它見這果子不在你身上,就飛去了;
then, seeing that this fruit is not found with you, it flies away;
11:29
for it does not remain with an unmerciful soul.
11:30
But when the Spirit is quenched, the rest you know—as many of you as have walked in a moonless night.
11:31
但若在夜間行走那從地到地的路尚且艱難,那從地引向天的路又怎能安全呢?你們豈不知在這段路途中有多少邪魔、多少猛獸、多少屬靈氣中那邪惡的勢力麼?我們若有那光,牠們就絲毫不能傷害我們;
But if it is hard to travel by night the road that leads from earth to earth, how can the road that leads from earth to heaven be safe? Do you not know how many demons are in that interval, how many wild beasts, how many spiritual powers of wickedness? If, then, we have that light, they will be able to do us no harm;
11:32
但我們若把它熄滅,牠們就迅速擒住我們,迅速把我們所有的都搶奪一空;
but if we quench it, they quickly overpower us, quickly carry off all that is ours;
11:33
since robbers also, having first put out the lamp, then set about their robbery.
11:34
因為他們能在這黑暗中看見,既然他們行的是黑暗的事;
For they see in this darkness, because they practise the deeds of darkness;
11:35
but we are unaccustomed to that light.
11:36
Every wicked deed quenches this light—railing, insult, and whatever else you may name.
11:37
因為正如在火的事上,凡與火性相異的都足以毀滅火,唯有與火同類的才能將它點燃;
For just as, in the case of fire, everything foreign to it is destructive of it, while that alone kindles it which is akin to it;
11:38
so also with this light: whatever is dry, whatever is warm, whatever is ardent kindles the flame of the Spirit.
11:39
所以我們不可帶來任何冷的、任何濕的東西;
Let us therefore bring nothing cold, nothing moist;
11:40
for these are destructive of it.
11:41
But there is also another interpretation.
11:42
Among them there were many: some prophesied truly, while others spoke falsely.
11:43
This too he mentions in the Epistle to the Corinthians, saying that for this reason he had given the discerning of spirits.
11:44
For the devil, being foul, wished by means of this gift to overturn the whole order of the Church.
11:45
因為二者都預言將來的事,就是那邪魔和聖靈——但一個說謊,另一個說真話——而人卻無從得任何憑據來分辨二者,各人都無須受查問便說話,正如耶利米和以西結那樣;
Since both foretold things to come, both the demon and the Spirit—but the one lying and the other speaking truth—and there was no means from any quarter of obtaining a proof of either, but each spoke without being called to account, as did Jeremiah and Ezekiel;
11:46
but when the time came they were put to the test—He gave also the discerning of spirits.
11:47
Since, then, at that time also among the Thessalonians many were prophesying—whom elsewhere too he hints at, saying, 'Be not soon shaken, neither by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of the Lord is at hand'—
11:48
having said, 'Quench not the Spirit,' he opportunely added what follows, saying, 'Despise not prophesyings.'
11:49
What, then, he wishes to make plain here is this:
11:50
不要因為在你們中間有些假先知,就為了他們的緣故連這些真的也一同攔阻,並轉臉不顧他們;
Do not, because there are certain false prophets among you, on their account hinder these true ones also and turn away from them;
11:51
that is, 'Despise not prophesyings.'
11:52
You see that this is what he means by 'Prove all things.'
11:53
Since he had said, 'Despise not prophesyings,' lest they should suppose that he had thrown open the tribunal to all, he says, 'Prove all things, but hold fast that which is good'—that is, the prophecies that are genuine.
11:54
『各樣的惡事要禁戒不作』;
'Abstain from every form of evil';
11:55
不是禁戒這一樣或那一樣,而是『從各樣的惡事』;
not from this or that, but 'From every kind';
11:56
so that with careful testing you may discern both the false and the true, and abstain from the former and hold fast the latter.
11:57
For in this way both the hatred of those will be intense and the love of these will arise, when we do all things not carelessly nor without examination, but with exactness.
11:58
'And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
11:59
你看那教師慈愛的心腸;
Behold the tender affection of the teacher;
11:60
在勸勉之後,他又加上禱告;
after the exhortation he adds a prayer also;
11:61
不僅如此,他甚至在書信中也是這樣行;
and not this only, but he does so even in his letters;
11:62
for there is need both of counsel and of prayer.
11:63
為此我們也是先給予勸導,然後才為你們獻上禱告;
For this reason we also, having first given counsel, then offer up our prayers on your behalf;
11:64
and this the initiated know.
11:65
保羅這樣行原是合宜的,因為他在神面前有極大的坦然無懼;
But Paul, indeed, did this with good reason, having much boldness of access toward God;
11:66
至於我們,卻是滿了羞愧,毫無坦然;
whereas we are put to shame and without boldness;
11:67
但既然我們被派任了這職分,就照樣去行——雖然我們連侍立在旁、佔據末後門徒的地位都不配;
but since we have been appointed to this office, we perform it—though we are unworthy even to stand by, and to occupy the place of the lowest of the disciples;
11:68
yet since grace works even through the unworthy—not for their own sakes, but for the sake of those who are to be benefited—
11:69
we contribute what is ours.
11:70
'May He sanctify you,' he says, 'wholly; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
11:71
What does he here call 'the spirit'? The gift of grace.
11:72
因為我們若拿著明亮的燈離世,就要進入新房;
For if we depart having our lamps bright, we shall enter into the bridal chamber;
11:73
為此他說:『你們全人的靈』;
for this reason he says, 'Your whole spirit';
11:74
for while that remains undamaged, this also remains.
11:75
'And the soul,' he says, 'and the body.'
11:76
For neither does the one receive anything wicked, nor does the other.
11:77
'Faithful is He that calls you, who also will do it.'
11:78
For since he had prayed, 'Do not suppose,' he says, 'that this comes to pass from my prayers, but out of the purpose with which He called you.'
11:79
For if He called you unto salvation, and He is true, He will assuredly save you, since He wills it.
11:80
'Brethren, pray also for us.'
11:81
Ah, what humility!
11:82
But he said this out of humility, whereas we say it not out of humility, but because of the great benefit it brings, and because we desire to gain something great from you, when we say, 'Pray also concerning us.'
11:83
For even if you gain nothing great or wonderful from us, yet for the very honour's sake, for the very title's sake.
11:84
A man may once have had children, and even if he has gained nothing from them, yet because he has become a father, he perhaps advances this as his plea, saying, 'Not for one day of yours was I called father.'
11:85
For this reason we too say, 'Pray also concerning us;'
11:86
οὐχ.
not saying this lightly, but earnestly longing for your prayers.
11:87
For if I have been made accountable for the guardianship of you all, and am about to render an account, much more ought I to enjoy the benefit of prayer from you.
11:88
我所要交的帳因你們而更為重大;
My reckonings have become the greater because of you;
11:89
therefore the help from you must also be the greater.
11:90
'Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.'
11:91
既因不在他們那裏,不能用親嘴問他們安,就藉著別人問他們安;
Since, being absent, he could not greet them with a kiss, he greets them through others;
11:92
so too we do, as when we say, 'Kiss him on my behalf.'
11:93
你們也當如此持守愛的火焰;
In this way do you also keep alive the fire of love;
11:94
for it does not endure separations, but even across the midst of the roads it stretches itself out, and is present everywhere.
11:95
'I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.'
11:96
這尤其是出於渴慕,而不那麼是為著教訓;
And this comes especially of longing, not so much of instruction;
11:97
'that I may be conversing with them also,' he says.
11:98
'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.'
11:99
And he does not simply enjoin it, but with an adjuration, doing even this out of a fervent mind, so that even if they should despise him, they might yet do what was enjoined for the sake of the oath.
11:100
因為那時他們對這事大有敬畏;
For at that time they had a great fear of the matter;
11:101
but now even this has been trampled underfoot.
11:102
常有僕人被鞭打時,指著神和祂的基督起誓,說:「願你這樣以基督徒的身分死去,」卻沒有人理會,沒有人回轉;
And often it happens that a servant, when being scourged, adjures God and His Christ, saying, 'So mayest thou die a Christian,' and no one heeds him, no one turns to him;
11:103
but if he adjure a man by his own son, at once, even against his will and gnashing his teeth, he lets go of his anger.
11:104
Again, another man being dragged and haled away through the midst of the market-place, with both Greeks and Jews present, adjures the one dragging him with the most fearful oaths, and no one heeds.
11:105
What will the Greeks not say, when a believer adjures a believer and a Christian, and no account is made of it, but we even despise it?
11:106
Will you have me relate to you a certain matter, which I myself have also heard? For I do not speak inventing it, but having heard it from a trustworthy person.
11:107
A certain maidservant was yoked to a wicked husband, a foul fellow and a runaway; and when this husband had sinned in many things and was about to be sold off by the mistress—
11:108
for indeed his sins were beyond pardon, and the mistress was a widow, and had not the power to punish him as he was ruining her household, but resolved to sell him off—
11:109
then the mistress, thinking it impious to tear the wife away from her husband, though the girl was useful to her, consented for the sake of ridding herself of him to sell off the wife together with him.
11:110
So the girl, seeing herself to be in straits,
11:111
就去到一位受人尊敬、與她主人素相熟識的人那裏——也就是把這事述說給我聽的那人——她抱住他的膝,千般哀哭,求他為她向她的女主人懇求;
went to a person held in reverence and familiar to her mistress—the one who related it to me as well—and, clasping his knees and lamenting a thousand times, besought him to entreat her mistress on her behalf;
11:112
and having spent many words, at last she added this also, thinking thereby especially to prevail with him, laying upon him a certain most fearful oath:
11:113
'So mayest thou behold Christ in the day of judgement, do not disregard my entreaty;'
11:114
and having said these things, she departed.
11:115
But he who had been entreated, some worldly care having befallen him, such as happens in households, forgot.
11:116
Then suddenly, in the afternoon of midday, he came to remember the most fearful oath, and was pierced to the heart exceedingly, and going off he made the entreaty with much diligence, and accomplished the matter.
11:117
就在那一夜,他忽然看見諸天開了,並看見基督自己;
And on that very night he suddenly saw the heavens opened, and Christ Himself;
11:118
he saw, however, in such measure as it is possible for a man to see.
11:119
For since he had at all taken thought of the adjuration, since he had feared, he was deemed worthy of this vision.
11:120
These things I have said, that we may not despise adjurations, especially when men entreat us for good deeds—for almsgiving, for kindness to men.
11:121
但如今那些窮人坐著,雙腳被砍斷,眼看你從旁跑過;
But now the poor sit with their feet cut off, seeing you run past;
11:122
他們既不能用腳追隨你,就指望像用鉤子一般,藉那誓言的敬畏把你留住,伸出手來囑咐你起誓,好叫你施捨一個或僅僅兩個小錢;
then, since they cannot follow you with their feet, they expect to hold you fast as with a hook by the fear of the oath, and stretching out their hands they adjure you to give a single obol, or but two;
11:123
but you run past, though it is your own Master by whom you are being adjured.
11:124
若有人指著你的眼睛,或指著你出門在外的丈夫,或指著你的孩子,或指著你的女兒向你起誓,你立刻就依從,你的心也雀躍而發熱;
And if one adjure you by your eyes, or by your husband who is abroad, or by your child, or by your daughter, at once you yield, and your mind leaps up and is set aglow;
11:125
but if he adjure you by the Lord, you run past.
11:126
我認得許多婦人,她們聽見「基督」就跑過去了;
And I know many women who, when they heard 'Christ,' ran past;
11:127
but when they were praised for their beauty by those approaching them, they melted, were softened, and stretched out a hand.
11:128
Accordingly they have reduced the poor, the wretched creatures, to this—to playing the buffoon.
11:129
因為他們既說激烈苦毒的話卻打動不了人的心,就轉到這條路上來,藉此尤能討人的喜歡;
For since, by speaking vehement and bitter words, they do not lay hold of the soul, they come to this way, by which they especially give delight;
11:130
and our great baseness has compelled him who is in calamity and choked by famine, the beggars, to utter praises of beauty.
11:131
但願只是這樣就好了!其實還有另一種比這更為嚴重的;
And would that it were only this! but there is also another kind more grievous than this;
11:132
it has compelled the poor to become jugglers and speakers of shameful things and buffoons.
11:133
因為當一個人把杯、盞、飲器套在指頭上,環繞己身像敲鈸一般叮噹作響,又拿著笛管藉此唱那滿了淫慾的污穢歌曲,並放聲高呼;
For when a man, threading cups and bowls and drinking-vessels upon his fingers and setting them about himself, clashes them like cymbals, and having a pipe sings through it the shameful songs full of lust, and cries aloud with his voice;
11:134
於是許多人圍站著,有的遞給他一塊麵包,有的一個小錢,有的別的東西,把他留住許久,男男女女都以此為樂——還有甚麼比這更嚴重的呢?這些事豈不值得大大歎息麼?這些事誠然是小事,也被人看為小事;
then many stand around, and some hand him a morsel of bread, some an obol, some something else, and detain him a long while, and both men and women take delight—what is more grievous than this? Are not these things worthy of much groaning? Small indeed they are, and are reckoned small;
11:135
but they breed great sins in our characters.
11:136
For when some shameful and pleasant strain is sung, it has softened the mind, and has corrupted that very soul itself.
11:137
那呼求神、又為你祈求千萬福分的窮人,尚且不被你看為配得一句話;
And the poor man who calls upon God, and prays down upon you ten thousand blessings, is not even deemed worthy of a word from you;
11:138
but he who instead of these things brings in the newfangled fashions is admired.
11:139
But what has now come into my mind to say to you, that will I speak.
11:140
What then is this? When you are encompassed by poverty and sickness, if from nowhere else, then at least from the beggars who make their way through the alleys, learn to give thanks to the Master.
11:141
For these men, who spend their whole life in begging, do not blaspheme, nor are they indignant, nor are they discontented, but make their whole tale of begging in thanksgiving, proclaiming God great and a lover of mankind.
11:142
那因饑餓而快要餓死的人,稱祂為愛人的神;
The one perishing with hunger calls Him a lover of mankind;
11:143
but you who live in abundance, if you do not get everything that belongs to others, call Him cruel.
11:144
How much better is that man! how will he then condemn us? God has left the poor throughout the whole world as common teachers to us of our calamities and as our consolation.
11:145
Have you suffered some unwished-for thing? but nothing such as he has.
11:146
Have you had your eye cut out? but he has lost both.
11:147
Have you fallen sick with a long disease? but he has one that is incurable.
11:148
Have you lost your children? but he has lost even the health of his own body.
11:149
Have you been damaged with a great loss? but you have not yet come to the point of needing others.
11:150
σον τῷ Θεῷ
Therefore give thanks to God.
11:151
Do you see those men in the furnace of poverty, begging from all yet receiving from but few?
11:152
When you grow weary of praying and do not receive, consider how many times you have heard a poor man calling upon you and did not heed him; yet he was not indignant, nor did he insult you.
11:153
And whereas you do this out of cruelty, God's not hearing proceeds from His love for mankind.
11:154
If then you yourself, when you refuse to hear your fellow-servant out of cruelty, do not think it right to be blamed, how do you blame the Master of the servant when He does not hear out of love for mankind? Do you see how great the inequality is? how great the injustice?
11:155
Let us always consider these things—those below us, those in greater misfortunes—and thus shall we be able to give thanks to God.
11:156
Life is full of such examples.
11:157
And he who is watchful and willing to give heed gains no small instruction even from the houses of prayer.
11:158
For this reason, both in the churches and at the shrines of the martyrs the poor are seated before the porches, so that from the sight of them we may receive much benefit.
11:159
且想一想:當我們進入地上的王宮時,看不見任何這類的景象;
For consider that when we enter into the palaces here on earth, one can see nothing of this kind;
11:160
but men grave and splendid and wealthy and prudent run about everywhere; whereas into the true palaces—I mean the church and the houses of prayer of the martyrs—come the demon-possessed, the maimed, the poor, the aged, the blind, those with distorted limbs.
11:161
這是為甚麼呢?為要藉著看見他們而教訓你:首先,若你從外面帶著某種驕傲進來,你便可注視他們,放下你的自大,痛悔你的心,如此進來聆聽所宣講的話(因為帶著驕傲禱告的人,是不可能蒙垂聽的);
Why is this? So that you may be instructed by the sight of them: first, that if you enter dragging in with you some pride from without, you may look upon them, lay aside your arrogance, break your heart, and so enter and hear what is said (for it is not possible for one who prays with pride to be heard);
11:162
又叫你當看見一個老人時,不因自己的年輕而心高氣傲;
so that, when you see an old man, you may not be high-minded about your youth;
11:163
因為這些老人從前也曾年輕過;
for these old men too were once young;
11:164
又叫你當因軍職和皇家的權勢而大大誇口時,可以想到,那些在皇宮中顯赫的人也是出於這等人;
so that, when you boast greatly of military rank and imperial power, you may consider that from among these are also those who became illustrious in the imperial courts;
11:165
so that, when you are confident in bodily health, by giving heed to these you may humble your mind.
11:166
因為在這裡不斷進來的人,那身體健康的便不會因身體的健康而心高氣傲;
For here, by coming in continually, he who is in health will not be high-minded about the health of his body;
11:167
while he who is sick will receive no ordinary consolation.
11:168
And not for this reason only do they sit here, but also that they may make you merciful, and that you may be bent toward compassion, and that you may marvel at God's love for mankind.
11:169
因為若神尚且不以他們為恥,反倒把他們安置在祂的門廊裡,你就更不該以他們為恥;
For if God is not ashamed of them, but has set them in His porches, much more should you not be;
11:170
so that you may not be high-minded about the palaces upon the earth.
11:171
所以,當一個窮人向你呼求時,不要以為恥;
Do not therefore be ashamed when you are called upon by a poor man;
11:172
縱然他近前來,縱然他抱住你的膝,也不要把他甩開;
and though he come near, though he clasp your knees, do not shake him off;
11:173
for these are certain marvelous dogs of the imperial courts.
11:174
我稱他們為犬,並非要羞辱他們——斷乎不是——反倒是極力稱讚他們;
For I did not call them dogs to dishonor them—God forbid—but rather in high praise;
11:175
他們看守著皇家的宮廷;
they guard the imperial court;
11:176
for the honor ascends to the King.
11:177
There all is pride—in the palaces upon the earth, I mean—but here all is humility.
11:178
人間的事物本是虛空,這道理你特別能從這些門廊學得;
That human things are nothing you learn especially from these very porches;
11:179
that God does not delight in wealth you are taught by those very ones who sit before them.
11:180
For their sitting and their gathering is well-nigh an exhortation, sending forth a clear voice to the whole nature of mankind and saying that human affairs are nothing—that they are shadow and smoke.
11:181
If wealth were a good thing, God would not have seated the poor before the very doors of His own house.
11:182
但祂若也接納富人,你不要希奇;
But if He also admits the wealthy, do not marvel;
11:183
因為祂接納他們,並非要他們仍舊富有,乃是要他們脫離那自大;
for He admits them not that they may remain wealthy, but that they may be delivered from their pride;
11:184
hear then what Christ says to them:
11:185
「你們不能又事奉神,又事奉瑪門」;
You cannot serve God and mammon;
11:186
又說:「財主進天國是難的」;
and again, With difficulty shall a rich man enter into the kingdom of heaven;
11:187
and again, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
11:188
For these reasons He receives the rich, that they may hear these words, that they may long for the eternal riches, that they may desire the things in the heavens.
11:189
祂既不以這等人坐在祂門前為不配,你又何必希奇呢?因為就是在祂那屬靈的筵席上,祂也不以呼召他們、使他們得享那盛筵為不配;
And why do you marvel if He does not deem such men unworthy to sit at His doors? For at His spiritual table too He does not deem it unworthy to call them and to give them a share of that banquet;
11:190
but the crippled and maimed, the aged man clad in rags and full of filth and rheum, comes together with the fair young man, even with him who is wrapped in purple and wears the diadem upon his head, to partake of the table, and is counted worthy of the spiritual banquet; and both alike enjoy the very same things, and there is no difference whatever.
11:191
既然基督尚且不以呼召他們與君王一同赴席為不配;
Then, seeing that Christ does not deem it unworthy to call them to the table along with the king;
11:192
因為二者是一同蒙召的;
for both together are called;
11:193
yet you perhaps deem it unworthy even to be seen giving to the poor, or even conversing with them? Alas for the folly and the pride!
11:194
Take heed lest we suffer the same things as that rich man of old.
11:195
He deemed it unworthy even to look upon Lazarus, and gave him neither roof nor shelter, but he lay outside cast down beside the gate; nor was he counted worthy even of words from that man.
11:196
But behold how, when the rich man came into necessity and need of his help, he failed to obtain it.
11:197
For if we are ashamed of those of whom Christ is not ashamed, we are ashamed of Christ, in being ashamed of His friends.
11:198
願你的筵席滿是瘸腿的、殘廢的人;
Let your table be filled with the lame, with the maimed;
11:199
for through these Christ comes, not through the wealthy.
11:200
Therefore, that you may not think the saying is mine, hear Christ Himself speaking—not that you may laugh, but that you may shudder:
11:201
祂說:「你擺設午飯或晚飯,不要請你的朋友、弟兄、親屬,和富足的鄰舍,恐怕他們也請你,你就得了報答;
When you make a dinner or a supper, He says, call not your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and a recompense be made to you;
11:202
你擺設筵席,倒要請那貧窮的、殘廢的、瞎眼的,你就有福了,因為他們沒有甚麼可報答你的;
but when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the blind; and you shall be blessed, for they have nothing to repay you;
11:203
for it shall be repaid you at the resurrection of the just.
11:204
And greater glory too comes here, if indeed you love glory.
11:205
因為從那些筵席所生出來的,乃是嫉妒、猜忌、指控、辱罵,還有莫大的恐懼,惟恐有甚麼不合宜的事發生;
For from those feasts come envy and jealousy and accusations and revilings, and much fear lest something be done contrary to what is fitting;
11:206
你就像僕人站在主人面前一般——倘若所請的人是你的尊長——懼怕他們的責備和他們的口舌;
and like a household servant before his master, so you stand—if those invited be your superiors—dreading their censure and their mouths;
11:207
但對這些人卻毫無這類的事,凡你所擺上的,他們都歡歡喜喜地領受;
but with these there is nothing of the kind, but whatever you bring them, they receive it all with pleasure;
11:208
and hence much applause, more splendid glory, greater wonder.
11:209
Not so loudly do all who hear applaud those as they do these.
11:210
你若不信,你這富有的、你這宴請將軍和官長的人,不妨親自一試;
But if you disbelieve, make trial of it yourself, you who are wealthy, you who invite generals and governors;
11:211
invite the poor also, and from these fill your table—see whether you are not applauded by all, whether you are not loved by all, whether all do not hold you as a father.
11:212
因為從那些筵席並無所得,但為著這些筵席所存留的,乃是諸天,並那在諸天之上的美物;
For from those dinners there is no gain, but for these heaven is laid up, and the good things in the heavens;
11:213
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
