'For you remember, brethren, our labour and our toil;'
3:2
'for working night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the Gospel of God.'
3:3
'You are witnesses, and God also, how holily and blamelessly and righteously we behaved ourselves toward you who believe; even as you know how we exhorted and comforted every one of you, as a father does his own children, and charged you that you should walk worthily of God, who has called you unto His own kingdom and glory.'
3:4
A teacher ought to count nothing burdensome of the things that make for the salvation of his disciples.
3:5
For if the blessed Jacob was worn down night and day in guarding the flocks, much more must he who has been entrusted with souls—even though the work be laborious, even though it be mean—do all things, looking to one thing alone, the salvation of those he disciples, and the glory that thence accrues to God.
3:6
See, at any rate, how Paul too, though he was herald and apostle to the whole world, and had taken up so great an honour, yet worked with his hands so as not to burden those he was discipling.
3:7
'You remember, brethren,' he says, 'our labour and our toil.'
3:8
他先前曾說:「我們原可以叫人負重,因為我們是基督的使徒」;
He had said before that, 'We might have been burdensome, as apostles of Christ;'
3:9
which very thing he also says in the Epistle to the Corinthians:
3:10
'Do you not know that they who minister about holy things eat of the things of the temple? Even so did Christ ordain that they who proclaim the Gospel should live of the Gospel.'
3:11
'But I,' he says, 'was not willing to do so, but laboured instead.'
3:12
And he worked not carelessly, but with much diligence.
3:13
He did not say, 'the benefits that came from me,' but, 'Our labour and our toil.'
3:14
'Working night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, so we preached to you the Gospel of God.'
3:15
But to the Corinthians he says something different:
3:16
'I robbed other Churches, taking wages of them for ministering to you.'
3:17
其實他在那裡也是作工的;
And yet there too he laboured;
3:18
但他並沒有提起這事,反倒陳明一件更具震撼力的話;
but he did not remind them of this, and instead set down something more striking;
3:19
as though he were saying, 'I was supported by others while ministering to you.'
3:20
But here it is not so; rather what? 'Working night and day.'
3:21
「我在你們那裡,就是缺乏的時候,也沒有累著你們一個人」,又說:「我取了工價來服事你們」;
'And when I was present with you and was in want, I was chargeable to no man,' and, 'I took wages for ministering to you;'
3:22
然而在這裡他顯明,這些人是處在貧窮之中的;
but here he shows that these men were in poverty;
3:23
for which reason he continually brings them forward as witnesses:
3:24
他說:「有你們作見證,也有神作證」;
'For you,' he says, 'are witnesses, and God also;'
3:25
使他的話值得信服,並且加上那最能使他們得著充分確信的事;
making his word trustworthy, and adding that which most of all gave them full assurance;
3:26
for the one is uncertain to those who do not know it, but the other is henceforth beyond all doubt to all.
3:27
For he did not see that it was Paul who was saying these things, but out of great abundance he wishes to give them full assurance.
3:28
'You are witnesses, and God also, how holily and righteously and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.'
3:29
他必須再一次稱讚他們;
He needed to praise them once more;
3:30
for this reason he sets forth these things, which were sufficient to persuade them.
3:31
For he reasons that he who, having come to be in need there and yet took nothing, much more would he do so now.
3:32
'How holily and righteously and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe; even as you know, how, as a father his own children, we exhorted and comforted every one of you.'
3:33
他在上文既說了他的行事為人,在這裡便說到他的愛;
Having spoken above of his manner of conduct, here he speaks of his love;
3:34
which was even greater than his patronage and protection.
3:35
And what has been said is a mark of his freedom from pride.
3:36
'As a father his own children, exhorting you and comforting you and charging you that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you unto His own kingdom and glory.'
3:37
When he had said, 'And charging you,' then he made mention of fathers, showing that, 'Even if we charged you, yet this was not harshly, but as fathers.'
3:38
To leave out no one in so great a multitude—neither small nor great, neither rich nor poor.
3:39
'Exhorting'—to what end did he say it? To the end that they should bear all things.
3:40
'And comforting and charging you.'
3:41
'That you should walk worthily of God, who calls you unto His own kingdom and glory.'
3:42
你再看,他在敘述之際,如何一面教導,一面安慰;
See again how, in the course of his narration, he both teaches and comforts;
3:43
for if He has called you to a kingdom, you ought to bear all things.
3:44
'We exhort you, not that you may bestow anything on us, but that you may attain the kingdom of heaven.'
3:45
'For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, because, when you received the word of the message of God from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works effectually in you who believe.'
3:46
他說:「不能說,我們一面凡事無可指摘地行,你們卻作了與我們的行事不相稱的事」;
'It cannot be said,' he says, 'that we for our part do all things blamelessly, but that you have done things unworthy of our conduct;'
3:47
'for you were not disposed toward us as though hearing men, but as though God Himself were exhorting; so did you give heed.'
3:48
這是從何處顯明的呢?正如他傳道並非用諂媚、也非出於虛榮,這事乃是從他自己所受的試煉、從他們的見證、並從他所行之事顯明出來的;
Whence is this clear? For just as the fact that he preached not in flattery nor in vainglory is shown from his own trials, and from their testimony, and from the things he did;
3:49
so also the fact that they rightly received the word is shown from the trials.
3:50
For whence, he says, unless you had heard as though God were speaking, would you have endured such perils?
3:51
And observe the dignity of it: 'For you,' he says.
3:52
'For you, brethren,' he says, 'became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and please not God, and are contrary to all men.'
3:53
'forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins.'
3:54
'But the wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.'
3:55
'You,' he says, 'became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea.'
3:56
'It is nothing marvelous,' he says, 'that they should do these things against you, seeing that they did so even against their own countrymen.'
3:57
And this too is no small proof that the preaching is true, seeing that even Jews endured to suffer all things.
3:58
'Because you also,' he says, 'suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Jews.'
3:59
There is something more in his saying, 'and they too, in Judea.'
3:60
For he shows that they rejoiced everywhere, as men who had contended in the contest.
3:61
He says then, 'And you suffered the same things.'
3:62
And what marvel again, if it be even against you, seeing that they dared to do the same even against the Master? Do you see how he introduced this as containing great consolation? And he continually turns this about, and one may find it in almost all the Epistles if he examines accurately, how in temptations he always brings Christ forward in various ways.
3:63
And here too, while accusing the Jews, he brings them to remembrance of the Master, and of the sufferings of the Master.
3:64
So well did he know that the matter contained the greatest consolation.
3:65
'Who both killed the Lord,' he says.
3:66
What then? Did they not also kill and stone their own prophets, whose very volumes they carry about? And indeed they did these things not for the sake of the truth.
3:67
So then it is not only a consolation in temptations,
3:68
but also a reminder not to suppose that they do these things for the truth's sake, and to be troubled on that account.
3:69
'And who drove us out,' he says.
3:70
'And we too,' he says, 'have suffered countless dreadful things.'
3:71
'And who please not God, and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved.'
3:72
'Contrary,' he says, 'to all men.'
3:73
How so? For if it is necessary to speak to the whole world, and these men hinder it, they are the common enemies of the world.
3:74
They murdered Christ and the prophets, they insult God, they are the common enemies of the world, they drive out us who have come for men's salvation.
3:75
What marvel if they displayed such conduct even against you, seeing that they did so even in Judea? 'Forbidding us,' he says, 'to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved.'
3:76
It is then a mark of envy to hinder the salvation of all.
3:77
'So as always to fill up the measure of their sins.'
3:78
'But the wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.'
3:79
這些事必不再像從前那樣了;不再有回轉,不再有終止;
These things will no longer be as the former ones; there is no more return, no more end;
3:80
but the wrath stands close at hand.
3:81
Whence is it plain? From this, that Christ foretold it.
3:82
For it has not only this consolation, that we take partners in our afflictions, but also that we hear of those who afflict us being punished.
3:83
And if the delay grieves us, let it be a comfort that they will no more lift up their heads.
3:84
Or rather, he even cut short the delay by saying 'The wrath,' showing again that it is due, and predetermined, and prophesied.
3:85
'But we, brethren, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, endeavored the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.'
3:86
He did not say 'being separated,' but what was more.
3:87
他在前面論到諂媚,顯明他並不諂媚,也不求人的榮耀;
He spoke above concerning flattery, showing that he does not flatter, that he does not seek glory;
3:88
here he speaks concerning love.
3:89
'As a father his children,' 'as a nurse'—here he says yet another thing, 'being bereaved,' which belongs to children seeking their fathers.
3:90
And were not those bereaved?
3:91
one may consider the longing—how, like little children unprotected, having suffered an untimely orphanhood, they are in great longing for their parents, not only by reason of nature itself, but also because of their desolation.
3:92
From this he shows also his own dejection, in which he was because of the separation.
3:93
'And these things,' he says, 'it cannot be said that we waited a long time, but for a season, and that in presence, not in heart;'
3:94
for we always have you in our thought.
3:95
and yet though having them continually in his heart, he sought also their presence face to face.
3:96
不要向我搬弄那過度的哲理;
Tell me not of that excessive philosophy;
3:97
this is truly the mark of fervent love—both to see and to hear and to speak, and this would contribute much.
3:98
'The more abundantly,' he says, 'we endeavored.'
3:99
What is 'the more abundantly'? Either this is to say, 'We clung to you exceedingly;'
3:100
or, as was likely, 'Having been left for an hour, we endeavored to see your face.'
3:101
請看有福的保羅,當他不能親自滿足自己的思慕時,就藉著別人成就這事;
Observe the blessed Paul, when he cannot fulfill his longing by himself, doing this through others;
3:102
as when he sends Timothy to the Philippians, and again the same man to the Corinthians, associating with them through others, when he cannot do so himself.
3:103
For as a lover he was a kind of frenzied and unrestrained man, and impatient in his affection.
3:104
'Wherefore we would have come to you.'
3:105
And yet here he states no other need, but only 'that we might see you.'
3:106
'I Paul indeed, both once and again.'
3:107
你說甚麼?撒但攔阻嗎?是的;
What do you say? Does Satan hinder? Yes;
3:108
for this was not God's work.
3:109
因為論到羅馬人,他說是神攔阻了他;
For in the case of the Romans he says that God hindered him;
3:110
路加在別處也說,聖靈禁止他們到亞細亞去;
and elsewhere too Luke says that the Spirit forbade them to come into Asia;
3:111
and to the Corinthians he says it was the work of the Spirit, but here only of Satan.
3:112
But what hindrance of Satan does he mean? Certain unexpected and violent temptations.
3:113
'For a plot having been laid against him,' he says, 'by the Jews, he was detained in Greece three months.'
3:114
And it is one thing to remain for the sake of a dispensation, and that willingly, and another to be hindered.
3:115
Wherefore, 'no longer having a place in these regions,' and, 'Sparing you, I came no more to Corinth;'
3:116
but here nothing of the kind, but what? That Satan hindered.
3:117
'I Paul indeed,' he says, 'both once and again.'
3:118
See how he takes an honorable pride and glories in it,
3:119
wishing to show that he loved them above all others.
3:120
The phrase 'I Paul' stands in the place of this:
3:121
For those others wished only, whereas I both wished and set my hand to the work.
3:122
'For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glorying? Are not even you, before our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?' They are Macedonians, tell me—are they your hope, O blessed Paul? 'Not these alone,' he says.
3:123
'Are not even you?' 'For what,' he says, 'is our hope, or joy, or crown of glorying?' Do you not recognize these as the words of women whose hearts are utterly aflame with tenderness, and who converse with their little children? 'And a crown,' he says, 'of glorying.'
3:124
For the name 'crown' did not suffice to show its splendor, but he added also 'of glorying.'
3:125
Of how great an ardor is this a sign! Never could a mother, nor a father, even had they come together and mingled their own longing into one, have shown an affection equal in weight to Paul's affection.
3:126
'A joy,' he says, 'and a crown.'
3:127
That is to say: 'I rejoice more over you,' he says, 'than over a crown.'
3:128
For consider how great a thing it is that a whole Church should stand present, planted and rooted by Paul.
3:129
Who would not exult over so numerous and so goodly an offspring? So that this too is not flattery.
3:130
For he did not say simply 'You,' but 'You also,' together with the rest.
3:131
'For you are our glory and our joy.'
3:132
'Therefore, when we could no longer bear it, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone.'
3:133
This he said in the sense of 'we chose.'
3:134
'And we sent Timothy, our brother and a minister of God, and our fellow worker in the Gospel of Christ.'
3:135
Not so as to exalt Timothy, he says, but rather to honor them, in that he sent to them the fellow worker and minister of the Gospel.
3:136
'Having drawn him away from his labors, we sent to you the minister of God and our fellow worker in the Gospel of Christ.'
3:137
'To establish you and to exhort you concerning your faith, that no one should be shaken amid these afflictions.'
3:138
What then does he mean here? Since the trials of teachers throw the disciples into confusion, and at that time he had fallen into many trials—as he himself says, 'Satan hindered us'—
3:139
it was to restore them that he spoke thus.
3:140
'And once and again I wished to come, but I was not able.'
3:141
And this too was likely to have thrown them into confusion.
3:142
因為門徒為自己的試煉所擔憂的,遠不如為他們教師的試煉所擔憂的;
For the disciples are not so troubled at their own trials as at those of their teachers;
3:143
just as a soldier is not so troubled at his own perils as when he sees his general struck down.
3:144
'To establish you,' he says.
3:145
So then, it was in order that they should not be thrown into confusion that he sent him, and not as though they were lacking in anything of the faith, nor as though they needed to learn something.
3:146
「並為你們的信心勸勉你們,免得有人在這些患難中被搖動;
'And to exhort you concerning your faith, that no one should be shaken amid these afflictions;
3:147
for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.'
3:148
'For indeed, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we were about to suffer affliction, even as it also came to pass, and you know.'
3:149
他說,不當驚慌;
One must not be troubled, he says;
3:150
因為所發生的並無稀奇,也非出乎意料之外;
for nothing strange, nothing beyond expectation, is happening;
3:151
which was enough to rouse them up.
3:152
Do you see that for this very reason Christ also foretold these things to His disciples? For hear Him saying:
3:153
'From now on I tell you before it comes to pass, so that, when it does come to pass, you may believe.'
3:154
For it is a great thing—truly a great thing—toward the consolation of others, to hear from one's teachers the things that are coming to pass.
3:155
因為正如患病的人,若從醫生那裡聽說某事將要發生、某事將要如此,他就不至於大大驚慌;
For just as a sick man, if he hears from the physician that such and such will happen, is not greatly troubled;
3:156
but if it turns out unexpectedly, then, as though the physician himself were at a loss and the disease had proved greater than his skill, he is distressed and thrown into confusion.
3:157
Foreseeing these things, Paul told them beforehand: 'That we are about to suffer affliction.'
3:158
'Even as,' he says, 'it also came to pass, and you know.'
3:159
He does not say merely that this came to pass, but that he foretold many other things as well, and they came about.
3:160
So that not only concerning things past ought one not to be troubled and disturbed—
3:161
for this is what 'to be shaken' means—
3:162
but neither concerning things to come, should any such thing befall.
3:163
Let us hear, we who have ears to hear:
3:164
for this the Christian is appointed.
3:165
The words 'we are appointed to this' he speaks concerning all the faithful.
3:166
And yet we, as though appointed to ease, are astonished as at some strange thing.
3:167
Rather, on account of what are we astonished as at some strange thing? For no season of affliction, nor any trial, has overtaken us, save such as is common to man.
3:168
It is fitting to say to you also: 'You have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.'
3:169
Or rather, it is not this that is fitting to say to you, but what? 'You have not yet despised riches.'
3:170
因為對那些已喪失了自己一切所有的人,這樣的話說得合宜;
For to those who had lost all their possessions these things were fittingly spoken;
3:171
but to those who still possess their own, this:
3:172
Who has been robbed of his goods for Christ's sake? Who has been buffeted? Who has been insulted? I mean, even as far as words.
3:173
我們所誇的從何而來?你的坦然無懼從何而來?基督在我們還作仇敵的時候,為我們受了這麼多的苦;
Whence comes our glorying? Whence can you have boldness? So many things did Christ suffer for us while we were enemies;
3:174
至於我們,能指出甚麼是我們為祂的緣故所受的苦呢?論到我們所受的苦,一無所有;
what can we point to of what we have suffered for His sake? Of what we have suffered, nothing;
3:175
but of the good things we receive from Him, ten thousand.
3:176
Whence shall we have boldness in that Day? Do you not know that even the soldier, when he displays ten thousand wounds and scars, then is able to be resplendent before the king; but if he has no exploit to show, even though he has committed no fault, he will be ranked among the lowest? 'But it is not a time of war,' he says.
3:177
For if it were, tell me, who would have contended? Who would have leaped forward? Who would have broken through the phalanx? Perhaps no one.
3:178
For when I see that you do not despise riches for Christ's sake,
3:179
how shall I believe you that you will despise blows? Tell me, do you bear those who insult you nobly, and bless them? This you do not do, but you disobey.
3:180
That which involves no peril you do not do; and will you endure blows, tell me, where the pain and anguish are so great? Do you not know that in peace one must exercise oneself in the things of war? Do you not see those soldiers who, even when no war disturbs them but there is deep peace, keep their weapons burnished, and going out daily, so to speak, with the instructors who teach them tactics into level and spacious plains, train themselves in the things of war with great exactness? Which of the spiritual soldiers has done this? Not one.
3:181
For this reason in wars we become slack and craven, and easily captured by all.
3:182
But of how great sluggishness is it not to reckon the present time to be a time of war, when Paul cries aloud:
3:183
'And all who wish to live godly in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted'? And when Christ says:
3:184
'In the world you shall have tribulation'? And again, when the blessed Paul cries with a resounding voice and says:
3:185
'Our wrestling is not against blood and flesh'? And again:
3:186
'Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth'? And none of those men said then, 'Why do you arm us, when there is no war? Why do you needlessly trouble us? You put breastplates on the soldiers, when it is possible to rest and be at quiet.' But if anyone had said this, he would have answered in return:
3:187
'Most certainly, even if there were no war, one ought to give thought to the things of war.
3:188
因為那在太平之時就顧念爭戰之事的人,到了爭戰的時候必令人生畏;
For he who in peace takes thought for the things of battle will be formidable in the time of battle;
3:189
but he who is inexperienced in the things of war will be all the more thrown into confusion even in peace.'
3:190
Why so? Because he will weep over what he possesses, and because, being unable to fight on their behalf, he will be filled with anguish.
3:191
For the possessions of the coward, the inexperienced, and the man unfit for battle belong to all the brave who know how to make war; therefore it is for this reason that I first arm you.
3:192
Therefore for this reason I first arm you.
3:193
And next, the whole span of our life is a time of warfare.
3:194
How, and in what manner? The devil stands ever at the ready.
3:195
Hear what Scripture says concerning him.
3:196
He goes about roaring like a lion, seeking to seize his prey.
3:197
He lays upon us countless bodily passions, which we must pass through, lest we deceive ourselves in vain.
3:198
For what, tell me, does not war against us? Do not riches, beauty, luxury, dominion, power, envy, glory, and pride? For not only does our own glory war against us, hindering us from stooping to humility, but so also does the glory of others, drawing us into envy and malice.
3:199
那麼與這些相反的呢——貧窮、羞辱、被人輕看、被人棄絕、毫無能力?然而這些乃是在我們裏面的;
But what of their opposites—poverty, dishonor, being despised, being cast aside, having no strength at all? Yet these things are within us;
3:200
至於那從人而來的,乃是邪惡、詭計、欺詐、毀謗,以及無數的患難處境;
while those which come from men are wickednesses, plots, deceits, slanders, and countless troublesome circumstances;
3:201
and likewise those which come from the demons—principalities, powers, the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, the spiritual forces of wickedness.
3:202
我們中間有的歡喜快樂,有的憂傷痛苦;
Some of us are rejoicing, others in pain;
3:203
here health, there sickness.
3:204
From what source will a man not sin? Would you have me tell you, beginning at once from Adam, from the very beginning? What overthrew the first-formed man? Pleasure, and food, and the love of dominion.
3:205
What overthrew the one after him, his son? Malice and envy.
3:206
What overthrew those in the days of Noah? The pleasures of the body, and the evils born from them.
3:207
What overthrew his son? Insolence and shamelessness.
3:208
What overthrew the Sodomites? Insolence and licentiousness and fullness of bread.
3:209
貧窮往往也造成這事;
And often poverty too does this;
3:210
for this reason a certain wise man said:
3:211
'Give me neither riches nor poverty.'
3:212
Or rather it is neither wealth nor poverty, but the will that is unable to make right use of either of these.
3:213
'Know,' he says, 'that you are passing through the midst of snares.'
3:214
有福的保羅說得何等奇妙;
Wonderfully did the blessed Paul speak;
3:215
he did not say simply that 'we are tempted,' but 'we are appointed unto this,' which is to say, we were brought into being for this.
3:216
這是我們的工作,這是我們的生活;你倒尋求安逸麼?並沒有劊子手站在你旁邊,用鐵鉤撕裂你的肋旁,強逼你獻祭;
This is our work, this is our life; and do you seek ease? The executioner does not stand over you, tearing your side with hooks and forcing you to sacrifice;
3:217
撕裂你的身體,強迫你獻祭;
rending it, and compelling you to sacrifice;
3:218
but there stands over us a fierce desire for money and for gain, gouging out our eyes.
3:219
沒有兵丁在我們面前點起火來,也沒有把我們放在鐵床上;
No soldier has kindled a fire against us, nor set us upon the gridiron;
3:220
but the burning of the body inflames the soul more than those flames did.
3:221
沒有君王站在旁邊,應許無數的好處來誘惑我們;
No emperor stands by, promising countless good things and cajoling us;
3:222
but there stands by the madness for glory, tickling us worse than he.
3:223
這實在是一場大戰,且是極大的戰爭,只要我們肯儆醒;
It is a great war indeed, and exceedingly great, if only we are willing to be watchful;
3:224
現今的時候也有它的冠冕;
the present time also has its crowns;
3:225
「從此以後,有公義的冠冕為我存留,就是主,那公義的審判者,到了那日要賞賜我的;
'Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the righteous Judge shall award to me;
3:226
and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.'
3:227
When you lose a beloved only-begotten child, reared amid great wealth, giving fair hopes, one who alone was to inherit your estate—do not groan, but give thanks to God, and glorify Him who took him, and in this you will be in no way inferior to Abraham.
3:228
For just as he gave to God when He commanded, so you, when He took, did not groan.
3:229
Have you fallen into a grievous sickness, and many come pressing upon you, some with incantations, some with amulets, others urging you by other means to relieve the malady? For the fear of God have you borne it nobly and unwaveringly, and would you rather suffer anything than endure to perform any of the idolatrous practices? This brings you a martyr's crown.
3:230
And how, and in what manner? I will tell you.
3:231
Because, just as the martyr nobly bears the pains from the tortures so as not to worship the idol, so you too bear the sufferings from the sickness, so as neither to need anything from that quarter nor to do the things it enjoins.
3:232
But are those pains more violent? Yet these are more prolonged, so that it comes out equal.
3:233
And often they are even more violent.
3:234
請告訴我,當高燒在你裏面攪擾焚燒,而別人雖勸你、你卻甩開那咒語,你豈不是已為自己戴上殉道者的冠冕麼?再者,有人失了錢財麼?就有許多人勸他去找占卜的;
For what, tell me, when a burning fever troubles and inflames you within, and though the others urge it you shake off the incantation—have you not bound upon yourself a martyr's crown? Again, has someone lost his money? Many are they who urge him to go off to soothsayers;
3:235
但你為著敬畏神,既然這是被禁止的,就寧可不取回那錢財,也不違背神?你所得的賞賜,與那把錢財施捨給窮人的人相等;
but you, out of the fear of God, since it is forbidden, chose rather not to recover the money than to disobey God? You have a reward equal to him who gave it to the poor;
3:236
if, having lost it, you give thanks, and though able to go off to soothsayers you endure rather not to recover it than to recover it in such a way, you have a gain equal to him who emptied it out for God's sake.
3:237
For just as that man, out of the fear of God, emptied it out to the needy, so you too, out of the fear of God, when those men seized it, did not take it back.
3:238
我們既能作損害自己的主,也能作不損害自己的主;
We are masters both of wronging ourselves and of not doing so;
3:239
and, if you please, let us exercise the matter in the very case of theft.
3:240
The thief cut through the wall, leaped into the chamber, carried off precious gold and costly stones—in a word, cast out an entire treasure—and was not caught.
3:241
What has happened is grievous, and the affair seems to be a loss; yet it is not yet so, but it lies in you either to make it a loss or a gain.
3:242
'And how,' one asks, 'could this become a gain?'
3:243
I will try to demonstrate how.
3:244
你若甘心願意,這就成為極大的益處;
If you are willing, it will be a great gain;
3:245
but if you are unwilling, the loss will be worse than what has happened.
3:246
因為正如當材料擺在工匠面前,那精於技藝的便按需要善用它,那不熟練的卻毀了它,使它成為自己的損失;
For just as, when material is set before craftsmen, the one skilled in the art uses it as needed, but the unskilled ruins it and makes it a loss to himself;
3:247
so also is it in affairs.
3:248
How then will it be a gain? If you give thanks to God, if you do not wail bitterly, if you speak the words of Job:
3:249
「賞賜的是耶和華,收取的也是耶和華;
'The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away;
3:250
naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return.'
3:251
有人說:「你這話是甚麼意思,說『收取的是耶和華』?是那賊拿去的,你怎能說『收取的是耶和華』呢?」你不要希奇;
'What do you mean, The Lord has taken away? The thief took it away; and how,' one says, 'can you say, The Lord has taken away?' Do not marvel;
3:252
for indeed Job also said of the things which the devil had taken away, 'The Lord has taken them away.'
3:253
But if he had the courage to speak thus, why will you not say, concerning the things the thief took, that 'The Lord has taken them away'? Whom do you admire, tell me—the one who emptied out his own goods to the poor, or Job for these words? Surely,
3:254
那當時沒有給的人,難道就比施捨的人所得的少麼?因為你不要說:「我沒有可感謝的,這事並非出於我的心願;
does he who did not then give have less than he who gave alms? For do not say, 'I have no thanks for it, the deed was not of my own will;
3:255
那強盜在我不知情、也非我所願的情形下拿去了;
the robber took it without my knowledge and against my will;
3:256
我有甚麼賞賜呢?」那奪去約伯之物的事,也是在約伯不知情、也非他所願的情形下發生的;
what reward shall be mine?' It was without Job's knowledge and against his will too that these things were taken;
3:257
for how could it be otherwise? Yet nonetheless he strove and won.
3:258
It is possible for you also to receive as great a reward as if you had cast them away willingly.
3:259
And rightly do we admire this man more—the one who bears injury with thanksgiving—than the one who gives willingly.
3:260
這是為什麼呢?因為那人是靠著所受的稱讚得著滋養,又靠著良心,並且懷有美好的盼望;
And why is this? Because the one is nourished by the praises he receives, and by his own conscience, and he holds good hopes;
3:261
他先前既已高尚地忍受了財物的損失,於是便甘心將它們拋棄了;
and having first borne the loss of his goods nobly, he then cast them away of his own accord;
3:262
but this man, while still bound fast to them, had them torn from him by force.
3:263
It is not the same thing to have been first persuaded to part from one's goods and thus to empty oneself of them, and to be robbed of them while still clinging to them.
3:264
If you speak these words, you will receive many times as much, even more than Job did.
3:265
因為約伯在此世不過得回加倍的;
For he received double here below;
3:266
but to you Christ has promised a hundredfold.
3:267
你因著敬畏神並未褻瀆,未曾求問占卜的,雖受苦仍獻上感謝麼?那你就如同那藐視損失的人一樣;
You did not blaspheme through the fear of God, you had no recourse to diviners, you gave thanks though suffering ill? You are like the man who despised the loss;
3:268
for these things too do not come to pass unless you first learn to despise them.
3:269
But it is not the same thing to have practiced over a long time the despising of riches, and to bear a loss that has fallen upon one all at once.
3:270
Thus the loss becomes gain, and you will suffer no harm, but will even be profited by the devil.
3:271
But how then does a loss become grievous? When you suffer loss in your soul.
3:272
你且告訴我:那賊搶走了你的財物麼?你為何自己奪去自己的救恩呢?你為何為著別人加給你的不義之苦而憂傷,卻反倒把自己投入更大的禍患之中呢?他或許使你陷於貧窮,你卻在那最要緊的事上惡毒地害了自己;
For tell me: has the thief robbed you of your goods? Why then do you rob yourself of salvation? Why, grieving over the ills you have wrongfully suffered from others, do you yourself cast yourself into still greater evils? He perhaps has cast you into poverty, but you wickedly harm yourself in the things that matter most;
3:273
他從你奪去的,是那在你身外之物,是日後即或違背你的心意也終要離你而去的;
he took from you the things that are outside you, and which would afterwards leap away from you even against your will;
3:274
but you deprive yourself of eternal riches.
3:275
Has the devil grieved you by taking away your goods? Then grieve him in turn by giving thanks, and do not gladden him.
3:276
你若去求問占卜的,就是叫他歡喜了;
If you go off to diviners, you have gladdened him;
3:277
but if you give thanks to God, you have dealt him a mortal blow.
3:278
你去求問占卜的,也決不能尋回你的財物;
Nor will you find your goods again by going off to the diviners;
3:279
因為知道這些事並不在他們的能力之內;
for it is not theirs to know such things;
3:280
and even if somewhere they should hit upon it by chance and say it, you also lose your soul in the bargain, and you will be laughed to scorn by your brethren, and again you will lose the goods in an evil way.
3:281
For the demon, knowing that you cannot bear the loss, but for the sake of these things even deny your God, gives back the money, that he may have an occasion to deceive you again.
3:282
但那占卜的若有時說中了,你也不要希奇;
But if the diviners do sometimes speak truly, do not marvel;
3:283
因為鬼魔是無體的,牠無處不到;
the demon is bodiless, he goes about everywhere;
3:284
是牠親自武裝了那些強盜;
he himself arms the robbers;
3:285
for these things do not come to pass without a demon.
3:286
既是牠武裝了他們,牠也曉得他們把贓物藏在何處;
If then he arms them, he also knows where they deposit their spoils;
3:287
he is not ignorant of his own servants.
3:288
這也沒有甚麼可希奇的;
And this is nothing to marvel at;
3:289
牠若見你為那損失憂傷,便再加給你另一次損失;
if he sees you grieving at the loss, he brings on yet another;
3:290
but if he sees you laughing it to scorn and despising it, he will desist from this course.
3:291
正如我們對付仇敵,是在那些能使他們憂傷的事上下手;
For just as we treat our enemies in those matters wherein we grieve them;
