But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that anything be written to you.
9:2
For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord comes just as a thief in the night.
9:3
Nothing, it seems, is so curious and greedy for the learning of hidden and veiled things as the nature of man.
9:4
And this is wont to happen to it whenever it has a mind imperfect and not yet brought to maturity.
9:5
For among children too the more simple do not cease to wear out both nurses and tutors and fathers by the frequency of their questions, in which there is nothing else but, 'When is this?' and 'When is that?'
9:6
And this happens both from being pampered and from having nothing to do.
9:7
Now our mind is eager to learn and comprehend many things already, but most of all the time of the consummation.
9:8
And what wonder if we suffer this? For even those holy apostles themselves suffered it most of all, and before the Passion they came and said to Christ:
9:9
Tell us, when shall these things be, and what is the sign of your coming and of the consummation of the age? And after the Passion and the resurrection from the dead they said to him:
9:10
Tell us, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?
9:11
And they asked him nothing before this.
9:12
But afterwards it was not so. For when they were counted worthy of the Holy Spirit, not only do they themselves not ask, nor fret at their ignorance, but they even restrain those who are sick with this unseasonable curiosity.
9:13
Hear then what things the blessed Paul now says:
9:14
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that anything be written to you.
9:15
他為甚麼不說沒有人知道?為甚麼不說這事沒有向人啟示,卻說:不用寫甚麼給你們呢?因為若那樣說,反倒使他們憂愁;
Why did he not say that no one knows? Why did he not say that it has not been revealed, but, 'You have no need that anything be written to you'? Because in the former way he would rather have grieved them;
9:16
but in this way he consoled them by saying it thus.
9:17
For by the words, 'You have no need,' he did not permit them to inquire, as being superfluous and unprofitable.
9:18
我且問你,這有甚麼益處呢?就假定那終結是在二十年後、三十年後、或一百年後;
For what, tell me, is the gain? Let us suppose the consummation to be after twenty years, after thirty, after a hundred;
9:19
what is that to us? Is not the consummation for each man the end of his own life? Why are you meddlesome, and in travail over the common end? But what we suffer in other things, this we suffer in this also.
9:20
For just as in other matters we leave our own concerns and are anxious about the affairs of others, saying:
9:21
某人是淫亂的,某人是姦淫的,那人搶奪了,另一個行了不義;至於自己的事,卻沒有人理會誰,反倒都掛慮別人的事,過於掛慮自己家裡的事;
So-and-so is a fornicator, so-and-so an adulterer, that man committed robbery, another did wrong; but of his own affairs no one takes any account of anyone, but everyone is more concerned about others than about his own household;
9:22
so also here, each one leaving off being anxious about his own end, we wish to learn the common dissolution.
9:23
For what have you in common with that? If you order this end of yours well, you will suffer nothing dreadful from that one.
9:24
For this reason Christ did not tell it, because it was not expedient.
9:25
他說,怎麼會於人無益呢?那隱藏此事的祂自己知道,為甚麼這於人無益;
And how was it not expedient, he says? He himself who hid it knows why it was not expedient;
9:26
for hear him saying to the apostles:
9:27
It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father has set within his own authority.
9:28
They heard these things in the case of Peter the chief, as seeking to learn things greater than themselves.
9:29
Yes, he says, but it was possible in this way to stop the mouths of the Greeks.
9:30
我且問你,怎麼堵住呢?他說,因為那些人聲稱這世界是神;
How, tell me? Since those men, he says, declare this world to be a god;
9:31
but if we knew the time of the dissolution, we should have stopped their mouths.
9:32
那麼,究竟哪一樣能堵住他們的口呢?是知道這世界終必毀滅,還是知道它幾時毀滅呢?你們若想堵住他們的口,只要對他們說這話,就是它必有終了;
For which is it that stops their mouths — to learn that it is dissolved at some time, or to learn when it is dissolved? If you wish to stop their mouths, say this to them, that it shall have an end;
9:33
if they are not persuaded by this, neither will they be persuaded by that.
9:34
Hear Paul saying:
9:35
因為你們自己確切曉得,主的日子來到,好像夜間的賊一樣;
For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord comes just as a thief in the night;
9:36
不單是那眾人共同的日子,也是各人自己的日子;
not the common day only, but also that which is proper to each;
9:37
for this one imitates that, since it is like it and akin to it.
9:38
因為那日子一次所成就的,這日子卻是一部分一部分地成就;
For what that one does all at once, this does in part;
9:39
and the time of the consummation took its beginning from Adam, while the end of the life of each of us is an image of the consummation, and one would not err in calling it a consummation.
9:40
For when tens of thousands die every day and all await that day, and before it no one rises again, is it not the work of that day? But if you wish to learn why it is hidden, and why it comes just as a thief in the night, I will tell it, as seems to me to be well.
9:41
倘若這事是顯明的、不是隱藏的,就沒有一個人肯終其一生留心追求美德了;
No one would ever have cared for virtue throughout all his life, if it were plain and not hidden;
9:42
but knowing his last day, and having done ten thousand dreadful things, and then coming to the laver at the last, he would so have departed.
9:43
因為即或如今,這不定之期的懼怕震撼著眾人的心靈,人人卻仍把先前的一生都消耗在邪惡中,直到氣息奄奄之際才把自己交付受洗;
For if now, when the fear of uncertainty shakes the souls of all, all men, having consumed all their former life in wickedness, give themselves to baptism at their last breath;
9:44
即使他們對此深信不疑,又有誰肯留心追求美德呢?因為即或懼怕臨頭,尚有許多人未受洗禮之光就離世了,連這懼怕也未曾教導他們趁活著留心去行神所喜悅的事;
even if they were very much persuaded about this, who would ever have cared for virtue? For if, even with fear impending, many departed without illumination, and not even this fear taught them while living to care for the things that seem good to God;
9:45
if this fear too were taken away, who would ever have become temperate? And who would have been equitable? There is no one.
9:46
還有另一點:如今那對死亡的懼怕,並對生命的貪愛,大大地轄制著人;
And again another point: great is the fear of death that now holds men, and the love of life;
9:47
but if each one knew that tomorrow he would certainly die, he would refuse nothing in the way of daring before that day, but would slaughter whomever he wished, and would work ten thousand dreadful things, taking vengeance on his enemies.
9:48
For a defiled man who has despaired of life here takes no account even of him who wears the purple.
9:49
He then who is persuaded that he must certainly depart, will both take vengeance on his enemy, and having first set his own soul at rest, would so receive his end.
9:50
Shall I mention yet a third point too? Those who love life, and greatly long for the things here, would be destroyed by despondency and grief.
9:51
For if any of the young knew that he would meet his end before old age, just as the most sluggish of beasts, when they are caught, become still more so, expecting their end, so would this man too be disposed.
9:52
Not even those noble men themselves would have had any reward.
9:53
For if they had known that after three years they must certainly depart, and that before those years it was not possible, what reward would they have had, in braving dangers? For someone would have said to them, that Since you are confident concerning the three years, for this reason you give yourselves over to perils, knowing that otherwise you cannot depart.
9:54
For he who at every peril expects to die, and knows that he will live if he does not risk himself, but will die if he dares such things, brings forth the greatest proof of his own zeal and of his contempt for the life here.
9:55
And I will make this plain to you by an example:
9:56
Tell me: if the patriarch Abraham had known beforehand that he would not slay his son, but still offered him up, would he have had any reward? And what of Paul: if he had foreknown that he would not die, and yet despised the dangers, where would his marvel be? For in that case even the most sluggish of men would enter into the fire,
9:57
if only he had found some trustworthy guarantor of his safety.
9:58
但那三個少年人卻不是這樣的;
But the three young men were not of this sort;
9:59
rather, what? Hear them as they speak:
9:60
「王啊,天上有一位神,祂必救我們脫離你的手,也救我們脫離這火窰;
'O king, there is a God in heaven who will deliver us out of your hands and out of this furnace;
9:61
but if not, be it known to you that we will not serve your gods, nor worship the golden image which you have set up.'
9:62
Do you see how many are the gains, and more numerous than these, that come from not knowing the hour of our end? For the present, let it suffice to have learned these things.
9:63
因此,祂來臨如同夜間的賊;
For this reason He comes as a thief in the night;
9:64
so that we may not give ourselves over to wickedness, nor to slothfulness, nor let Him cut short our reward.
9:65
'For you yourselves,' he says, 'know perfectly.'
9:66
Why then do you busy yourselves, if you are already persuaded? But that the future is uncertain, learn from what Christ said:
9:67
and that He said it for this very reason, listen to what He says:
9:68
'Watch therefore, for you do not know at what hour the thief comes.'
9:69
For this reason Paul too said:
9:70
'But when they say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall by no means escape.'
9:71
Here he hinted at the same thing which he also said in his Second Epistle.
9:72
For since these were in afflictions, while those who warred against them were in ease and luxury, and since he himself consoled their present hardships with the doctrine of the resurrection, while those others reviled them, speaking out of their ancestral notions, and said:
9:73
'When will it be?' (which is also what the prophets said:
9:74
「禍哉,那些說『願神速速成就祂所要作的,讓我們得見』的人;
'Woe to those who say, Let it come quickly, let God hasten the things He will do, that we may see;
9:75
又說『願以色列聖者的籌算臨到,讓我們得知』的人;
and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel come, that we may know.'
9:76
「禍哉,那些切望耶和華日子的人」(因為他所說的並非泛指切望的人,乃是指那些出於不信而切望的人);
'Woe to those who desire the day of the Lord' (for he does not simply speak of those who desire it, but of those who desire it out of unbelief);
9:77
and, 'The day of the Lord is darkness,' he says, 'and not light.')
9:78
And see how he consoles them:
9:79
不要讓他們把那些人身處順境一事,當作審判不會來到的憑據;
Let them not make the fact that these men live in prosperity a proof that the judgment is not coming;
9:80
for in this very way indeed it does come.
9:81
It is worthwhile to inquire into this also:
9:82
if Antichrist is to come, and Elijah too is to come, how is it that 'when they say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them'? For these events do not permit the day to be unknown, being as they are signs of its coming.
9:83
But it is not this time that he is hinting at—I mean the time of Antichrist—nor does he say that that day will be a sign of Christ's coming; rather, that Christ will have no sign, but will come all at once and unexpectedly.
9:84
「可是,」有人或許會說,「對懷胎的婦人而言,產難並非全無預兆地臨到;
'And yet,' one might say, 'to the woman with child it does not come without warning;
9:85
for she knows that after nine months the birth will take place.'
9:86
其實產難乃是全然出人意料地臨到的;
Yet in fact it comes altogether without warning;
9:87
因為有些婦人懷胎七個月便生產,有些則是九個月;
for some women have given birth at seven months, others at nine;
9:88
and moreover the very day and hour of the birth are uncertain.
9:89
所以,保羅正是就這一點說這些話的;
It is with reference to this, then, that Paul says these things;
9:90
因為產難的預兆並不多;
for the signs of the birth-pangs are not many;
9:91
at any rate, many women, having no forewarning, have given birth even on the roads and outside their homes.
9:92
And here he hinted not only at the uncertainty, but also at the bitterness of the pain.
9:93
正如那婦人正嬉戲歡笑、毫無防備之際,忽然被難以言喻的劇痛攫住,被產難所撕裂;
For just as that woman, while playing and laughing and foreseeing nothing at all, is suddenly seized by unspeakable throes and is cut through by her pangs;
9:94
so also those souls, when that day comes upon them.
9:95
Then, showing that he is not saying these things about them, he added:
9:96
'But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you as a thief.'
9:97
Here he means the dark and unclean life.
9:98
For just as the vile and wicked among men do all things by night, escaping the notice of all, and shutting themselves up in darkness.
9:99
請告訴我:姦夫豈不是等候黃昏,賊豈不是等候夜晚嗎?盜墓的人豈不是把一切勾當都放在夜間進行嗎?那麼怎樣呢?那日子豈不也像賊一樣臨到他們嗎?豈不也出人意料地臨到他們嗎?可是他們卻能預見?那麼他為何說「不用寫信給你們」呢?在此他所論的並非那不可預知的性質,乃是那災禍本身;
For tell me: does not the adulterer watch for the evening, and the thief for the night? Does not the grave-robber carry on all his business in the night? What then? Does not the day overtake them as a thief? Does it not come upon them too without warning? But they foresee it? How then does he say, 'You have no need that anything be written to you'? Here he speaks not with respect to the uncertainty, but with respect to the calamity;
9:100
that is, He will not come for their harm.
9:101
For to them also He will indeed come without warning, yet He will involve them in nothing grievous.
9:102
因為對那些警醒又處在光明中的人來說,縱然有強盜闖入,他也絲毫不能加害;
For with men who are awake and in the light, even if some entry of a robber occurs, he will be able to do no harm;
9:103
對那些行事正直的人也是如此;
so it is also with those who live rightly;
9:104
but He departs after stripping bare of everything those who are asleep, those who put their confidence in the things here.
9:105
Then yet another thing on their behalf:
9:106
'For you are all,' he says, 'sons of light and sons of the day.'
9:107
And how is it possible, he says, to be sons of the day? Just as men are sons of perdition, sons of hell.
9:108
For this reason Christ too said to the Pharisees:
9:109
「你們有禍了!因為你們走遍海洋陸地,勾引一個人入教;
'Woe to you, for you go about the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte;
9:110
and when he is made, you make him a son of hell.'
9:111
'For which things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience'—that is, upon those who do the deeds of hell, those who do the deeds of disobedience.
9:112
Just as, then, those who do the things pleasing to God are sons of God, so too those who do the deeds of the light are sons of the day and sons of light.
9:113
'We are not of the night nor of darkness.'
9:114
'So then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober.'
9:115
「因為睡了的人是在夜間睡;
'For those who sleep, sleep in the night;
9:116
醉了的人是在夜間醉;
and those who are drunk, are drunk in the night;
9:117
but we, being of the day, let us be sober.'
9:118
Here he shows that to be in the day is a matter of our own choosing.
9:119
就眼前而論——我是說就這自然的晝與夜而論——那並不在乎我們;黑夜即使違背我們的心意也照樣來到,睡意即使我們不願也照樣襲來;
And in the present case—I mean with respect to this natural day and night—it is not in our power, but the night comes even against our will, and sleep steals upon us even when we do not wish it;
9:120
but with respect to that other night and that sleep, it is no longer so; rather, it is possible to be awake perpetually, it is possible to keep perpetual day.
9:121
For to close the eyes of the soul and to bring on the sleep that comes of wickedness is not a matter of nature, but of the will.
9:122
'But let us watch,' he says, 'and be sober.'
9:123
因為人縱然醒著,卻可能因不行任何善事而形同睡覺;
For it is possible, while awake, to be asleep, by doing nothing good;
9:124
for this reason he added, 'And let us be sober.'
9:125
For indeed, if one is awake in the day but is not sober, he will fall into ten thousand troubles. So then sobriety is the heightening of wakefulness.
9:126
'They that sleep,' he says, 'sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.'
9:127
By drunkenness here he means not only that which comes from wine, but also that which arises from all evils.
9:128
For wealth too is a drunkenness of the soul, and so is the desire of riches, and the love of bodies, and whatever else you may name: it is a drunkenness of the soul.
9:129
但他為何稱惡為睡眠呢?因為,首先,這樣的人對於美德是毫無作為的;
But why did he call vice a sleep? Because, first, such a man is inactive toward virtue;
9:130
其次,因為他所見的盡是幻象,看不見任何真實之物,反而滿是夢境,且常是荒謬悖理之事;
and next, because he imagines everything and sees nothing that is true, but is full of dreams, and often of absurd things;
9:131
and if he should see anything good, it has nothing firm nor fixed in it.
9:132
Such is the present life:
9:133
it is full of dreams and phantoms.
9:134
Wealth is a dream, and glory, and all such things.
9:135
He that sleeps sees not the things that are and truly subsist, but the things that are not.
9:136
Such is vice, and the life spent in vice:
9:137
it sees not the things that are—that is, the spiritual things, the heavenly things, the things that abide—but the things that flow away and fly off and quickly leap away from us.
9:138
But it is not enough to be awake and sober; one must also be armed.
9:139
For even if a man be awake and sober, yet has no weapons, the robbers quickly overpower him.
9:140
When therefore we ought both to be awake and sober and armed, but we are unarmed and naked and asleep, what shall hinder him from thrusting in the sword? Wherefore, to make this plain also—that we have need of weapons—he added:
9:141
'But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love;'
9:142
'and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.'
9:143
'Of faith and love,' he says.
9:144
Here he hints at a life joined with right doctrines.
9:145
See how he has shown what it is to be awake and sober: it is, he says, to have the breastplate of faith and love.
9:146
By faith he means not the ordinary kind, but the fervent, the sincere, the faith that makes those who are shielded by it invincible.
9:147
正如沒有甚麼能迅速刺穿護心鏡,它對胸膛而言彷彿一道無形的城牆;
Just as nothing can quickly cut through the breastplate, but it is as an invisible wall to the breast,
9:148
so also do you draw faith and love around your soul, and none of the fiery darts of the devil will be able to fix itself in it.
9:149
For where the power of the soul is forearmed with the weapon of love,
9:150
all who plot against it contrive their schemes in vain and to no purpose.
9:151
For neither wickedness, nor enmity, nor envy, nor flattery, nor hypocrisy, nor anything else will be able to reach such a soul.
9:152
And he did not simply say 'love,' but bade us put it on as a strong breastplate.
9:153
Then, having thus spoken, he adds:
9:154
'And for a helmet, the hope of salvation.'
9:155
For just as the helmet guards the vital part in us, encompassing the head and covering it on every side,
9:156
so also hope does not allow the reasoning power to fall away, but sets it upright like a head, permitting nothing from without to fall upon it.
9:157
只要沒有甚麼把它壓下,它就不會滑跌;
And so long as nothing bears it down, neither does it slip;
9:158
for he that is fenced with these weapons can never fall.
9:159
'For there abide,' he says, 'faith, hope, love, these three.'
9:160
Then, having said, 'Put on and gird yourselves,' he himself now furnishes the weapons, and shows whence faith and hope and love might be born, and how the weapons might become stronger, adding and saying:
9:161
'For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us,'
9:162
So that He called us not to this end, to destroy us, but to save us.
9:163
And whence is it plain that this is His will? 'He gave His Son for us,' he says;
9:164
so greatly does He desire us to be saved, that He gave His Son—and gave Him not simply, but unto death.
9:165
From these considerations hope is born.
9:166
所以,人哪,你在親近神的時候不要絕望,因祂為你的緣故連自己的兒子也不顧惜;
For do not despair, O man, in drawing near to God, who spared not even His Son for your sake;
9:167
do not renounce hope because of present evils.
9:168
He that gave the Only-Begotten, that He might save you and deliver you from hell—what will He henceforth spare for your salvation? So that we ought to hope for all good things.
9:169
For not even if we were going before a judge who was about to try us, and who had displayed such love for us as to slay his own son, should we be afraid.
9:170
所以,讓我們盼望美善而偉大的事;
Let us then hope for good and great things;
9:171
for we have received the sum of them, if we believe.
9:172
因為我們已經看見了那榜樣;
For we have seen the pattern;
9:173
for it is the utmost folly not to love Him who has been so disposed toward us.
9:174
'That whether we wake or sleep,' he says, 'we should live together with Him.'
9:175
'Wherefore comfort one another, and build up each one the other, even as also ye do.'
9:176
And elsewhere again: 'Whether we wake or sleep.'
9:177
只是他在那裡所指的睡眠是一種,在這裡所指的又是另一種;
But he means one kind of sleep there, and another here;
9:178
for here he signifies bodily death, but there the negligence in our manner of life.
9:179
Fear not the dangers: even if we die, we shall live.
9:180
不要因你身處險境就絕望;
Do not despair because you are in peril;
9:181
for He would not, unless He greatly burned with love for us, have given His Son.
9:182
For He too Himself died.
9:183
Whether therefore we die or live, we shall live with Him.
9:184
我無論是活是死,於我都無關緊要;
It matters nothing to me whether I live or die;
9:185
for with Him we shall live.
9:186
Let us therefore do all things for the sake of that life; let us work all things with our eyes fixed on it.
9:187
Vice is darkness, beloved; it is death, it is night; we see none of the things we ought, we do none of the things that befit us.
9:188
正如死人是醜陋難看、發出臭味的,照樣,活在惡中之人的靈魂也是滿了許多的污穢;
Just as the dead are unsightly and foul-smelling, so also the souls of those in vice are full of much uncleanness;
9:189
他們的眼睛閉著,口緊閉不開,一動不動地躺在惡的床榻上;
their eyes are closed, their mouth is shut fast, they lie motionless upon the bed of vice;
9:190
nay rather, they are more pitiable than those who have suffered these things.
9:191
For the latter are dead to both, but the former are insensible toward virtue, while alive toward vice.
9:192
人若擊打死人,死人並不覺得;
If one strike a dead man, he does not feel it;
9:193
然而正如一塊乾枯的木頭,照樣那已丟棄了生命的靈魂,實在也是枯乾的;
but just as a piece of dry wood, so also the soul, having cast away life, is in truth dry;
9:194
it receives ten thousand wounds every day, and feels none of them, but is disposed insensibly toward all.
9:195
One would not err in comparing them to madmen, to the drunken, to those out of their wits.
9:196
All these things does vice possess, and it is more grievous than them all.
9:197
The madman finds much pardon from those who look upon him; for his malady is not of the will, but of nature alone.
9:198
for his malady is not of the will, but of nature alone.
9:199
But he who lives in vice, from what shall he obtain pardon? Whence, then, comes vice? Whence come the many who are wicked? Whence, do you ask? Tell me yourself: whence comes the malignancy of diseases? whence frenzy? whence heavy sleep? Is it not from carelessness? If natural diseases take their origin from the will, how much more do those which spring from the will itself.
9:200
Whence comes drunkenness? Is it not from the intemperance of the soul? Does not frenzy come from an excess of fever? And does not the fever come from the elements within us being in excess? And does not the excess of the elements within us come from carelessness? For whenever, whether by deficiency or by excess, we push any of the elements within us into disproportion, we kindle that fire.
9:201
Again, if, when the flame has been kindled, we persist in making light of it, we work against ourselves a pyre which we are not even able to quench.
9:202
So too it happens with vice.
9:203
When it has begun and we do not check it nor cut it off, we can no longer even reach its end, but it grows greater than our strength.
9:204
Therefore, I beseech you, let us do everything, so as never to slumber.
9:205
Do you not see the guards, that often, having given themselves up but a little to sleep, they gained nothing from all their long watch? For through that little moment they ruined the whole, granting to him who wished to steal a wide license.
9:206
For just as we do not see the thieves as clearly as they see us, so also the devil above all men stands ready and lies in wait and gnashes his teeth.
9:207
so also the devil above all men stands over us and lies in wait, and gnashes his teeth.
9:208
Let us not say, 'This matters nothing, that matters nothing.'
9:209
Whence we did not expect it, we have often been despoiled.
9:210
whence we did not expect it, there we perished.
9:211
讓我們謹慎察看萬事;我們若不醉酒,就不至睡著;
Let us watch all things carefully; let us not be drunken, and we shall not fall asleep;
9:212
我們若不放縱宴樂,就不至沉睡;
let us not live in luxury, and we shall not slumber;
9:213
let us not rage after outward things, and we shall continue in sobriety.
9:214
Let us order ourselves aright on every side.
9:215
正如那些行在繃緊繩索上的人,連絲毫的疏忽都不容有;
And just as for those who walk upon a stretched rope it is not possible to be careless even a little;
9:216
因為那微小之事會釀成極大的禍患;
for the little thing works a great evil;
9:217
因為他一失去平衡,立時就墜落而喪亡;
for having lost his balance he is straightway cast down and perishes;
9:218
so neither is it possible for us to be careless.
9:219
We walk a narrow road, hemmed in by precipices on either side, one that does not admit two feet together.
9:220
Do you see how much exactness we need? Do you not see those who travel roads that are precipitous on both sides, how they make secure not their feet only, but also their eyes? For if a man should chance to look elsewhere, even though his foot stand firmly, his eye, made dizzy by the depth, has cast the whole man down.
9:221
但人必須留意自己,並留意自己的腳步;
But one must give heed to oneself and to one's step;
9:222
neither to the right, nor to the left.
9:223
罪惡的深淵極大,懸崖極其巨大,下面是幽深的黑暗,道路狹窄;
Great is the abyss of vice, mighty are the precipices, deep below is the darkness, narrow is the road;
9:224
let us give heed with fear, let us walk with trembling.
9:225
沒有人行走這樣的路時會放縱大笑,也不會被醉酒所壓沉,反倒是在儆醒與專注中行走這樣的路;
No one traveling such a road is dissolved in laughter, nor weighed down with drunkenness, but travels such a road in sobriety and attentiveness;
9:226
沒有人行走這樣的路時會攜帶任何多餘之物;
no one traveling such a road carries with him any of the superfluous things;
9:227
因為即使輕裝束帶,能夠奔跑過去,就已是值得慶幸的了;
for it is a welcome thing, being lightly girded, to be able to run through it;
9:228
no one fetters his own feet, but lets them go free and unencumbered.
9:229
But we, binding ourselves with countless cares, and carrying countless burdens of this life, gaping and dissipated—how do we expect to walk the narrow road? He did not simply say that it is narrow, but with astonishment.
9:230
This we also do in the case of things that are exceedingly marveled at.
9:231
And again He says, 'Strait is the way that leads unto life.'
9:232
For when we must render account of our words and thoughts and deeds and of all things, it is indeed narrow.
9:233
But we make it narrower still, by broadening and widening ourselves and letting our feet sprawl.
9:234
因為窄路對每個人都是艱難的,尤其對那嬌養自己的人為甚;而那使自己消瘦刻苦的人,甚至不會覺察那狹窄的困迫;
For the narrow road is difficult for everyone, but especially for him who is pampered; whereas he who wastes himself away will not even perceive the straitness;
9:235
so that he who has practiced being afflicted will not even be exasperated at being pressed.
9:236
沒有人可指望在安逸中得見諸天;
let none expect to behold heaven amid ease;
9:237
沒有人可在放縱宴樂中盼望行走那窄路;
Let no one, living in luxury, hope to travel the narrow road;
9:238
Let no one, walking the broad road, hope for life.
9:239
When therefore you see such a one reveling in baths, in a costly table, or in a train of attendants, do not count yourself wretched as one not sharing in these things, but rather groan for that man, because he travels the road that leads to perdition.
9:240
因為這條路若以患難告終,又有甚麼益處呢?那狹窄困迫若引向安息,又有甚麼損害呢?請告訴我:若有一人蒙召進入王宮,卻要行過困苦而險峻的窄巷;另有一人被帶往死地,卻經過鬧市的中央被拖行——我們要稱誰為有福,要為誰哀歎呢?豈不是那行過寬闊之路的人嗎?如今也是這樣:讓我們不要以那些享樂的人為有福,反倒要以那些不享樂的人為有福;
For what profit is there in this road, when it ends in affliction? And what harm from that straitness, when it comes to rest and ease? Tell me, if one man, being invited to the palace, should walk through afflicting and precipitous alleys, while another, being led away to death, should be dragged through the midst of the marketplace, whom shall we call blessed, whom shall we bewail? Not the one walking through the broad way? So also now: let us not count the luxurious blessed, but those who are not luxurious;
9:241
these press on toward heaven, those toward hell.
9:242
或許他們中間有許多人,甚至要譏笑我們所說的話;
And perhaps many of them will even laugh at the things spoken by us;
9:243
但我正因這緣故越發悲歎哀哭,因為他們甚至不知道該為何事發笑,也不知道最該為何事哀傷;
but I for this very reason lament and mourn all the more, that they do not even know at what they ought to laugh, and over what they ought most of all to grieve;
9:244
but they confound and confuse and throw all things into an uproar.
9:245
For these things I lament them.
9:246
人哪,你說甚麼呢?你這將要復活、要為自己所行的交帳、要承受末後審判的人——你對這些事竟毫不放在心上,反倒操練貪食醉酒,並且在這一切之上還嬉笑麼?但我為你哀歎,因我知道那等候你的災禍,並那接踵臨到你的刑罰;
What say you, O man? You who are about to rise again, and to render an account of the things done by you, and to undergo the final judgment—of these things you make no account, but you practice gluttony and drunkenness, and on top of these you laugh? But I lament you, knowing the evils that await you, the punishment that shall receive you in turn;
9:247
and for this reason I lament most of all, because you laugh.
9:248
Mourn with me, lament with me your own evils.
9:249
Tell me, if one of your household should die, do you not turn away from those who laugh at the death, and count them enemies, while you love those who weep and mourn with you? Then, when your wife lies dead before you, you turn away from him who laughs; but when your soul has been put to death, you turn away from him who weeps, and do you yourself laugh? Do you see how the devil has disposed us to be enemies and foes to our own selves? Let us at length come to our senses, let us open our eyes, let us keep watch, let us lay hold of eternal life, let us shake off the deep sleep.
9:250
有審判,有刑罰,有復活,有對所行之事的查究;
There is a judgment, there is punishment, there is a resurrection, there is an examination of the things done;
9:251
The Lord comes in the clouds. 'A fire shall be kindled before Him, and round about Him a mighty tempest,' it says;
9:252
a river of fire is drawn along before Him, a worm that dies not, unquenchable fire, outer darkness, gnashing of teeth.
9:253
And though you be displeased at these things ten thousand times over, I will not cease from speaking.
9:254
For if the prophets, being stoned, did not keep silence, much more must we bear enmity, and not speak to please you, lest, having deceived you, we ourselves be cut asunder.
9:255
在那裏,刑罰是不死的,是毫無安慰的;
There the punishment is immortal, without consolation;
9:256
'Who will pity a charmer that is bitten by a serpent?' it says. When we do not pity ourselves, who will pity us, tell me? If you should see someone driving a sword through himself, would you ever be able to spare him? By no means.
9:257
much more, when it is in our power to do rightly, and we do not do rightly, who will spare us? No one.
9:258
when we pray to God, saying, 'Have mercy on me, O Lord,' let us say to ourselves also, and let us have mercy on ourselves.
9:259
神是否憐憫我們,主權在乎我們自己;
We ourselves are masters of whether God shows mercy to us;
9:260
He Himself has granted us this.
9:261
我們若行配得憐憫的事,若行配得那從祂而來之慈愛的事,神就必憐憫我們;
If we do things worthy of mercy, if we do things worthy of the loving-kindness that comes from Him, God will have mercy on us;
9:262
but if we do not have mercy on ourselves, who will spare us? Have mercy on your neighbor, and you shall be shown mercy by God Himself.
9:263
每天有多少人前來說:「憐憫我」,你卻連轉眼也不轉向他們?有多少人赤身露體,多少人殘缺不全,我們卻毫不動心,反倒漠視他們的懇求?既然如此,你自己既不行配得憐憫的事,怎能自以為配得憐憫呢?讓我們成為有惻隱之心的人,讓我們成為施憐憫的人;
How many every day come forward saying, 'Have mercy on me,' and you do not even turn toward them? How many are naked, how many are maimed, and we are not moved, but pass by their supplications? How then do you deem yourself worthy to be shown mercy, when you yourself do nothing worthy of mercy? Let us become compassionate, let us become merciful;
9:264
so that thus we may please God, and may attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together,
9:265
and to the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
