'Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, you would abound more and more.'
5:2
'For you know what charges we gave you through our Lord Jesus Christ.'
5:3
'For this is the will of God, your sanctification.'
5:4
When he has finished with the pressing matters and those at hand, and is about to enter at last upon the abiding things─those which one ought continually to hear─he sets before them this word, 'Finally,' that is, 'Always indeed and unto the end we beseech and exhort you in the Lord.'
5:5
他也不說單憑自己就足以配得人信服來作勸勉;
Nor does he say that he himself is worthy of credit for the exhorting;
5:6
and yet who was so worthy of credit as he? But he takes Christ to his aid.
5:7
'Through God we exhort you,' he says.
5:8
For this is what 'in the Lord' means.
5:9
Which he also said to the Corinthians:
5:10
'God exhorts you through us.'
5:11
'That, even as you received from us.'
5:12
The word 'you received' pertains not only to words, but also to deeds.
5:13
The phrase 'how you ought to walk' signifies in this the whole conduct of life.
5:14
'And to please God, that you would abound more and more;'
5:15
that is, 'That out of a greater abundance you may not stop short at the commandments, but that you may even go beyond them;'
5:16
for this is the meaning of 'that you would abound.'
5:17
在前面的話中,他以驚嘆接納他們那堅固之信的希奇;
For in what precedes he accepts with admiration the wonder of their firm faith;
5:18
but here he regulates their manner of life.
5:19
就是要超越那些誡命與規條;
to go beyond the commandments and the ordinances;
5:20
for the whole no longer comes about from the necessity of teaching, but from one's own free choice.
5:21
因為正如土地不當單單長出所撒種在其中的;
For just as the earth ought not merely to bear what has been sown in it;
5:22
so also the soul ought not to stop at those things that have been sown in it, but ought even to go beyond them.
5:23
Do you see that he rightly said 'to go beyond'? For virtue is divided into these two things: to turn away from evil, and to do good.
5:24
For withdrawal from evils does not suffice for the attainment of virtue, but it is a certain road and a beginning that leads there; yet we have need of much eagerness.
5:25
所以,那些當躲避的事,他是以命令的方式對他們說的,這也是恰當的;
The things, then, that are to be shunned he tells them in the form of a charge, and rightly so;
5:26
for these things, when done, bring punishment, but when not done, bring not even praise.
5:27
然而那屬乎美德的事─例如傾盡自己的資財,以及諸如此類的事─這些他就不再以命令的方式說了;
The things of virtue, however─such as to empty out one's possessions, and whatever is of that kind─these he no longer speaks of in the form of a charge;
5:28
but what? 'He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.'
5:29
It is likely, then, that the things which he had charged them with much fear and trembling, he also reminds them of through these letters, calling them back to that reverent care.
5:30
Wherefore he does not set them down, but reminds them of them.
5:31
'For you know,' he says, 'what charges we gave you through our Lord Jesus Christ.'
5:32
'For this is the will of God, your sanctification.'
5:33
你且看,論到別的事,他從未像論到這事這般強烈地暗示;
And observe how nowhere concerning any other matter does he hint so vehemently as concerning this;
5:34
just as also, writing elsewhere, he says:
5:35
Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord.
5:36
And why do you wonder that he writes about this to his disciples everywhere, when even in writing to Timothy he said:
5:37
Keep yourself pure? And in the second Epistle to the Corinthians also, writing, he said:
5:38
In much patience, in fastings, in purity.
5:39
And in many places one may find this, both in the Epistle to the Romans and in all the Epistles.
5:40
For truly this evil brings ruin upon all men.
5:41
And just as a swine wallowing in mire fills with its stench everything it enters and crams its senses with filth, so too does fornication.
5:42
For this evil is hard to wash away.
5:43
But when some who even have wives do this, how great is the excess of its absurdity! For this, he says, is the will of God, even your sanctification, that you should abstain from all fornication.
5:44
For many are the forms of disorder; manifold and varied are the pleasures of licentiousness, which it is not even tolerable to name.
5:45
But having said, From all fornication, he leaves the rest to those who understand.
5:46
That every one of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.
5:47
Not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God.
5:48
That every one of you, he says, should know how to possess his own vessel.
5:49
So then the matter is one requiring instruction, and much instruction at that, in order that a man should not act licentiously.
5:50
所以當它保持潔淨、在聖潔之中的時候,我們才算是守住了它;
So then we possess it, when it remains pure and is in sanctification;
5:51
but when it is unclean, it is sin.
5:52
For then it no longer does what we wish, but what that thing commands.
5:53
Not in the passion of lust, he says.
5:54
Here he shows also the manner in which one ought to exercise self-control, so as to cut off the passions of lust.
5:55
For indeed luxury, and wealth, and slackness, and idleness, and leisure, and all these things lead us out into unseemly desire.
5:56
Even as, he says, the Gentiles who know not God.
5:57
For those men are of such a sort, being men who do not expect to render account.
5:58
That he should not overreach and defraud his brother in the matter.
5:59
他說「不可越分」,說得好;
He said well, That he should not overreach;
5:60
for God apportioned to each man a wife, and set bounds to nature, namely, that union with the one woman.
5:61
所以與別的女人相合,就是越軌、是搶奪、是貪心;
So that intercourse with another woman is transgression and robbery and covetousness;
5:62
or rather, more grievous than any robbery.
5:63
For we are not so pained when our money is carried off, as when our marriage is broken into.
5:64
你稱他為弟兄,卻在不當佔便宜的事上佔他的便宜嗎?他在這裡是說到姦淫;
You call him brother, and do you defraud him, and in things wherein you ought not? Here he speaks of adultery;
5:65
but above, of all fornication as well.
5:66
For since he was about to say that one should not overreach nor defraud his brother, anticipating this he says, Do not think
5:67
that I say these things only concerning brethren; but you must not have the wives of others either, nor those women who are simply without husbands and common to all.
5:68
必須遠避一切的淫行;
One must abstain from all fornication;
5:69
wherefore he says, Because the Lord is the avenger of all these things.
5:70
他先是勸勉,然後又用「像那外邦人一樣」的話使他們羞愧;
First he exhorted, then he shamed them by saying, Even as the Gentiles;
5:71
then from reasonings he showed the absurdity of the thing.
5:72
And this was the meaning of, To defraud his brother.
5:73
然後他末了加上那要點;
Then he adds finally the main point;
5:74
wherefore he says, The Lord is the avenger of all these things, even as we also told you beforehand and testified.
5:75
For we shall not do these things unpunished, nor shall we enjoy so much pleasure as the punishment we shall undergo.
5:76
For God has not called us unto uncleanness, but in sanctification.
5:77
Since he had said, His brother, and had added that God takes vengeance, showing that even if an unbeliever should suffer this, the one who has done it shall render punishment, he spoke thus:
5:78
神懲罰你,並不是為那人伸冤,乃是因為你褻慢了祂自己;
He does not punish you by avenging that man, but because you have insulted Himself;
5:79
it was He who called you; you have insulted Him who called you.
5:80
Therefore he that despises, despises not man, but God, who has given His Holy Spirit unto us.
5:81
So that whether you corrupt the empress, he says, or your maidservant who has a husband, the charge is the same.
5:82
為甚麼呢?因為祂所伸冤的,不是那受屈的人,乃是祂自己;
Why so? Because He avenges not the persons who are wronged, but Himself;
5:83
for you were defiled alike, you insulted God alike.
5:84
因為這也是姦淫,那也是姦淫,因為這也是婚姻,那也是婚姻;
For both this and that is adultery, since both this and that is marriage;
5:85
and even if you commit not adultery, but fornication, although the harlot has no husband, yet nonetheless God avenges, since He avenges Himself.
5:86
因為你行這事,並非那麼藐視那人,乃是那麼藐視神;
For you do this not so much out of contempt for that man as for God;
5:87
for that man you wrong even while escaping his notice, but God, who sees, you disregard.
5:88
For tell me: if someone, deemed worthy of the purple by the king and of ten thousand other honors, and commanded to live worthily of the honor, should go off and defile himself with some woman, whom has he insulted? Her, or the king who gave the honor? She too has been insulted, but not in like manner.
5:89
Wherefore, I beseech you, let us guard against this sin.
5:90
因為正如我們懲罰那與我們同居、卻把自己給了別人的妻子;
For just as we punish our wives when, living with us, they give themselves to others;
5:91
so too are we punished, though not by the laws of the Romans, yet by God.
5:92
For indeed this too is adultery.
5:93
For adultery is not only when one commits it with a woman joined to another, but also when a man himself is bound to a wife.
5:94
For even if what is said is burdensome to many, yet it is necessary to say it, in order to set matters right for the future.
5:95
And this is not the only kind of adultery, when we corrupt a woman joined to a husband, but even if she be free and released, while we ourselves are bound to a wife, the deed is adultery.
5:96
因為那與你行淫的女子沒有受繫縛,那又如何呢?你自己卻是受了繫縛的;
For what does it matter, if the woman committed with is not bound? But you are bound;
5:97
you transgressed the law, you wronged your own flesh.
5:98
For why, tell me, do you punish your wife, even if she be defiled with a man who is free and has no wife? Because it is adultery.
5:99
And yet he who committed the act with her has no wife, but she is bound to a husband.
5:100
Then you too are bound to a wife.
5:101
So that likewise your act too is adultery.
5:102
因為他說:「凡休妻的,若不是為淫亂的緣故,就是叫她作淫婦;
For, he says, whosoever puts away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery;
5:103
and whosoever marries her that is put away commits adultery.
5:104
If he who marries her that is put away commits adultery, does not he who is with his own wife, and yet defiles himself with this other woman, do this much more? It is surely plain to everyone.
5:105
But as for you, the men, enough has been said on these matters.
5:106
For concerning such persons Christ also says, 'Their worm shall not die, and the fire shall not be quenched.'
5:107
But for the sake of the young it is necessary to speak to you—or rather, not so much on their account as on your own.
5:108
For these things are fitting not for them, but also for you; and how this is so, I will now tell you.
5:109
沒有學會行淫的人,也不會懂得姦淫;
He who has not learned to commit fornication will not know how to commit adultery either;
5:110
但那沉溺於娼妓之中的人,也會很快落到姦淫這地步;
but he who wallows among harlots will quickly come to this too;
5:111
and even if not with married women, yet he will corrupt himself with loose women.
5:112
What then do I advise? That you cut out the roots. As many of you as have young sons, and are about to lead them into worldly life, draw them quickly beneath the yoke of marriage.
5:113
因為當他們還年輕的時候,情慾的衝動攪擾他們,所以在婚前的時期,你們要用勸戒、威嚇、恐懼、應許並其他無數方法約束他們;
For since, while they are still young, the promptings of desire trouble them, restrain them in the time before marriage by exhortations, by threats, by fears, by promises, and by countless other means;
5:114
but when the season of marriage arrives, let no one put it off (behold, I am speaking the words of a bridal matchmaker) to join your children in wedlock.
5:115
然而我說這些話並不覺得羞恥;
But I am not ashamed to say these things;
5:116
既然連保羅也不以為恥地說:「你們不可彼此虧負」,而那話似乎比這更難以啟齒;
since not even Paul was ashamed to say, 'Do not deprive one another,' which seems to be more shameful than this;
5:117
for he was not attending to the words, but to the deeds that are accomplished by means of the words.
5:118
When therefore your boy has grown, before military service, before the rest of life, give thought to matters of marriage.
5:119
他若看見你迅速為他迎娶新婦,又看見中間相隔的時候不長,就能忍耐那火焰;
And if he sees that you are quickly bringing him his bride, and that the interval in between is short, he will be able to endure the flame;
5:120
but if he perceives that you are being negligent and slow and are waiting until he shall have acquired much income, and only then will you make his marriage, then, giving up hope because of the length of time, he will quickly slip into fornication. Here too the love of money is the root of evils.
5:121
The love of money is the root of the evils here as well.
5:122
For since no one cares how chaste, how virtuous the boy may become, but all are mad after gold, for this reason no one takes up this diligence.
5:123
Therefore I exhort you first to order their souls aright.
5:124
因為他若貞潔地親近新婦,若只看見她一人的身體,那渴慕就會強烈,敬畏神的心也會更大,婚姻也就真正尊貴,因為它所迎接的是純潔無玷污的身體;所生的兒女也必滿有豐盛的祝福,而新郎與新婦也必彼此順服;
For if he comes to his bride in purity, if he beholds her body alone, both the longing will be intense and the fear of God the greater, and the marriage will be truly honorable, receiving pure and undefiled bodies; and the children born will be full of much blessing, and they will yield to one another, both the bridegroom and the bride;
5:125
for being each inexperienced in the other's ways, they will submit to one another.
5:126
但一個年輕人若開始放縱,又嘗過娼妓習性的滋味,那麼直到第一、第二個晚上,他還會稱讚自己的妻子;
But a young man who begins to be licentious and takes his experience from harlots' ways will, up to the first and second evening, praise his own wife;
5:127
but after that he will quickly slip back into that licentiousness, that unrestrained and disorderly laughter, seeking the words full of much indecency, the affected gestures, and every other unseemliness which it is not tolerable for us to mention.
5:128
But the free woman will not endure to provide these things, nor to defile herself.
5:129
因為她許配給丈夫,是為了生活的相伴與生養兒女,不是為了醜行與嬉戲;
For she was betrothed to the man for the fellowship of life and for the bearing of children, not for unseemliness and laughter;
5:130
that she may keep the house, that she may train him also to be reverent, not that she may furnish him kindling for fornication.
5:131
但娼妓的姿態在你看來是可喜的麼?我也知道;
But do the harlot's postures appear pleasant to you? I too know it;
5:132
for the Scripture also says this:
5:133
'Honey drops from the lips of a harlot woman.'
5:134
正是為此我才做這一切事,好使你不去嘗那蜂蜜的滋味;
It is for this very reason that I do all these things, that you may not take experience of that honey;
5:135
for it turns at once into gall.
5:136
And this very thing the Scripture also says:
5:137
'She for a time makes smooth your throat, but afterward you will find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword.'
5:138
你怎麼說呢?請容忍我,因我說出可說是不潔的話,並且拋開羞恥、不再臉紅;
What do you say? Bear with me while I utter something even unclean, so to speak, and cast off shame and blush no more;
5:139
for I do not suffer this willingly, but because of those who are not ashamed of the deeds, I myself am compelled to speak the words.
5:140
And in the Scriptures too we see many such things.
5:141
事實上以西結在斥責耶路撒冷時,也說出許多這樣的話,並不覺得羞恥;
For indeed Ezekiel, reproaching Jerusalem, utters many such things, and is not ashamed;
5:142
for he was not saying them out of his own passion, but out of solicitude.
5:143
因為縱使那些話語看似不雅,其目的卻不是不雅的,反倒對那想要除去心靈污穢的人極為合宜;
For even though the words seem to be improper, yet the aim is not improper, but even exceedingly fitting for one who wishes to cast out the uncleanness of the soul;
5:144
for unless the shameless soul hears the very words, it is not put to shame.
5:145
For indeed a physician, wishing to cast out putrefaction, first thrusts his fingers into the wound; and unless he first soils his healing hands, he will not be able to cure it.
5:146
So I too, unless I first soil the mouth that heals your maladies, will not be able to heal you.
5:147
Or rather, neither is this soiled, nor are those hands.
5:148
Why so? Because the uncleanness is not natural, nor does it come from our own body—just as neither there does it come from his hands—but from things foreign to them.
5:149
在別人身體的情形下,那醫生不推辭把自己的手浸入其中;
Where there is another's body, that man does not refuse to dip his own hands;
5:150
where our body is concerned, shall we refuse, tell me? For you are our body—weak indeed and unclean, yet ours.
5:151
那麼我所說的,並且為此發出這麼長勸戒的,究竟是甚麼呢?就是:奴僕所穿的衣服,你必永不肯穿上,因它污穢而厭惡它,你寧可赤身,也不肯用它;
What then is it that I say, and for the sake of which I have made so long an exhortation? That a garment which the slave wears you would never choose to put on, loathing it because of the filth, but you would rather choose to be naked than to use it;
5:152
yet a body unclean and filthy, and serviceable not to your servant alone but to countless others, you will use to the full, and not loathe? Were you ashamed on hearing this? Rather, be ashamed in your deeds, not in the words.
5:153
And I pass over all the rest—the perverse and abominable character of her ways, the servile and ignoble quality of the rest of her life.
5:154
Tell me, do you go to the same woman, both you and your household slave? And would that it were the slave only—but even the executioner!
5:155
劊子手的手,你連握都不肯忍受;
And the hands of the executioner you would not endure to grasp;
5:156
然而那與他成為一體的婦人,你卻擁抱親吻,並不戰慄,也不懼怕麼?你不覺羞恥、不覺慚愧、不覺焦慮麼?我確曾對你們的父親說過,他們必須快快領你們進入婚姻;
yet her who has become one body with him you embrace and kiss, and do not shudder nor fear? Are you not ashamed, not abashed, not in anguish? I said indeed to your fathers that they must quickly lead you to marriage;
5:157
but nevertheless neither are you free from responsibility for punishment.
5:158
因為若沒有許多別的年輕人,無論從前或如今,反倒過著自制的生活,你們或許還有些許辯解的餘地;
For if there were not also many other young men living rather in self-control, both formerly and now, perhaps you would have some defense;
5:159
but if there are, whence will you be able to say, 'We could not restrain the flame of desire'? For those who were able condemn you, by their sharing in the same nature.
5:160
You hear Paul saying:
5:161
'Pursue peace and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord.'
5:162
Is not this threat sufficient to strike fear? You see others being wholly chaste and passing their lives in reverence, and you cannot hold out even through the years of youth? You see others overthrowing pleasure ten thousand times, and you cannot endure even once? If you wish, I will tell you the cause.
5:163
並不是所有年輕人都注定要放縱無度;
It is not that all the young were bound to be intemperate;
5:164
but we ourselves thrust ourselves into the fire.
5:165
For when you go up into a theater, and sit feasting your eyes on the naked limbs of women, for the moment you were delighted, but afterward you have nourished from thence a mighty fever.
5:166
When you behold women appearing as it were in the very likeness of the body, when even the spectacles and the songs have nothing else but unnatural loves—'So-and-so,' it says, 'loved So-and-so, and did not obtain her, and hanged herself,' and monstrous passions rolled down even upon mothers—
5:167
when you receive these things through hearing, and through women, and through images, and now even through old men (for many, putting masks upon themselves, play the woman there), whence, tell me, will you be able henceforth to be chaste, when those narratives, those spectacles, those things heard hold fast your soul, and dreams of such a kind succeed them thereafter? For the soul is by nature apt for the most part to imagine such things as it wills and desires by day.
5:168
When therefore in that place you look upon shameful deeds, and hear yet more shameful words, and receive the wounds, but do not apply the remedies, how shall not the putrefaction reasonably grow? How shall not the disease be aggravated—and far more so than in the case of our bodies? For the will, if only we wished it, would admit the means of correction more lightly than the body does.
5:169
因為在身體的情形下,確需藥物、醫生和時間;
For there indeed drugs and physicians and time are needed;
5:170
but here it suffices merely to will, and one becomes both good and bad.
5:171
So that you the rather admitted the disease.
5:172
When therefore we heap together the things that harm, but make no account of the things that benefit, when will any health come? For this reason Paul also said, 'Even as the Gentiles who do not know God.'
5:173
我們當懼怕,倘若那不認識神的外邦人尚且常常貞潔;
Let us fear, if the nations that know not God are oftentimes chaste;
5:174
let us be put to shame, when we are worse than they.
5:175
只要我們願意,只要我們遠離那些傷害自己的事物,操練自制便是容易的;
It is easy to attain self-control, if we are willing, if we withdraw from the things that harm ourselves;
5:176
since not even to flee fornication is easy, if we are unwilling.
5:177
For what is easier than to walk to the marketplace? And yet
5:178
by reason of great sloth it has become difficult, not for women only, but now also for men.
5:179
What is easier than to sleep? Yet this too we have made difficult.
5:180
Many at least among the rich toss and turn throughout the whole night, because they do not wait for the need of sleep, and only then sleep.
5:181
And in short, nothing is difficult when we are willing, just as nothing is easy when we are unwilling.
5:182
For this reason also the Scripture says, 'If you are willing, and hearken to me;'
5:183
and again, 'If you are not willing,' it says, 'neither will you hearken to me.'
5:184
So that in willing and in not willing the whole matter lies.
5:185
For this reason also we are both punished and praised.
5:186
And may it be that we, having become of the number of those who are praised, obtain the promised good things, by the grace and lovingkindness, and so forth.
