'But the younger widows refuse;'
15:2
'for when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, having condemnation, because they have set aside their first faith.'
15:3
'And withal they learn also to be idle, going about from house to house;'
15:4
'and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.'
15:5
'I will therefore that the younger widows marry, keep house, and give no occasion to the adversary for the sake of reviling.'
15:6
'For already some are turned aside after Satan.'
15:7
Paul, having made a long discourse concerning widows, and having defined their age by saying, 'Let a widow be enrolled who is not less than sixty years old,' and having taught the character of the widow by saying, 'If she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the feet of the saints'—
15:8
'But the younger widows refuse.'
15:9
But concerning virgins, although the matter is much more burdensome, he hints at nothing of this kind.
15:10
Why? Because they enrolled themselves for greater things, and there the work proceeded from a greater purpose of mind.
15:11
The words, then, 'if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the feet of the saints,' and all such things, he passed over concerning the virgin by means of the phrase 'attending upon the Lord,' and by saying, 'She that is unmarried careth for the things of the Lord.'
15:12
但論到童女,若在歲數上沒有嚴格的規定,你不要以為希奇;
But if for the virgin nothing is strictly defined with respect to age, do not wonder;
15:13
for from this very fact that also becomes clear.
15:14
For I have said otherwise, that those women chose virginity out of a greater purpose of mind.
15:15
Besides this, here there had already been falls, and these women themselves furnished
15:16
這樣立例的把柄;
the occasion for such a legislation;
15:17
but there no such thing existed.
15:18
因為已經有些人離棄了正道,這由他說「因為她們情慾發動、違背基督的時候,就想要嫁人」這話便可看明;
For that some had already fallen away is clear from this, from his saying, 'For when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they desire to marry';
15:19
and again, 'For already some are turned aside after Satan.'
15:20
'But the younger widows refuse.'
15:21
Why? 'For when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they desire to marry.'
15:22
「情慾發動」是甚麼意思呢?就是當她們矯揉造作、放縱奢華的時候;
What is the meaning of, 'When they have waxed wanton'? When they play coy, when they grow luxurious and pampered;
15:23
just as when, concerning a reasonable husband, one may say,
15:24
'Let her go, for she has become another's.'
15:25
He shows, then, that they chose widowhood merely without deliberation, not having judged it aright.
15:26
如此說來,寡婦在守寡之中也是許配給了基督;
So then the widow also is betrothed to Christ in her widowhood;
15:27
'for I,' He says, 'am the protector of widows, and the Father of the fatherless.'
15:28
他表明她們連守寡也揀選得不正,反倒情慾發動、放縱起來;
He shows that they do not even choose widowhood rightly, but wax wanton;
15:29
'I espoused you to one husband, that I might present you a pure virgin to Christ.'
15:30
'When they have been named to Him,' he says, 'they desire to marry, having condemnation, because they have set aside their first faith.'
15:31
By 'faith' he means the covenant, the pledge of truth.
15:32
They lied to Him, they transgressed the covenants.
15:33
'And withal they learn also to be idle.'
15:34
如此看來,他不僅吩咐男人作工,也吩咐女人作工;
So then he enjoins working not upon men only, but upon women also;
15:35
for idleness has taught all wickedness.
15:36
'They are not,' he says, 'liable to this condemnation only, but to other sins as well.'
15:37
If, then, it is unseemly for a woman to go about from house to house, much more is it for a virgin.
15:38
'And not only,' he says, 'do they learn to be idle, but they are also tattlers and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.'
15:39
'I will therefore that the younger widows marry, bear children, keep house.'
15:40
What then comes to pass when both the care for a husband is removed, and the care for God does not hold sway? With good reason they become idle, talkative, busybodies.
15:41
因為凡不顧念自己事的人,必定去顧念別人的事;
For he who does not care for his own affairs will assuredly care for another's;
15:42
just as he who attends to his own affairs will take no account of others', nor have any concern about them.
15:43
沒有甚麼比好管閒事、干預別人的事更叫婦人失儀的了——而且不僅叫婦人失儀,也叫男人失儀;
Nothing is so unbecoming to a woman as, above all, to meddle in the affairs of others—and not to a woman only, but to a man as well;
15:44
for this is the greatest proof of shamelessness and effrontery.
15:45
既然這些婦女願意如此,我也願意年輕的寡婦嫁人,生養兒女,料理家務,看守門戶;
Since these women wish it, I too wish that the younger widows marry, bear children, keep house, guard the home;
15:46
for this is far better than to do those things.
15:47
人本當顧念神的事,本當持守信仰;
One ought indeed to have cared for the things of God, one ought to have kept the faith;
15:48
but since those things do not come to pass, it is better that these should happen than those.
15:49
For thus neither is God set at nought, nor do these women learn such practices.
15:50
因為從那種守寡的光景中不會生出甚麼好處;
For from that widowhood no good will come;
15:51
but from this marriage come many good things.
15:52
Hence she will be able to turn back the gaping idleness and the sloth of her mind.
15:53
有人問:為甚麼他不說「既然這些寡婦跌倒了,就當多多看顧她們,免得她們遭受我所說的那些事」,反倒吩咐她們嫁人呢?因為嫁人並非禁止的事,且能使她們立於穩妥之地;
And for what reason, one asks, did he not say, 'Since the widows have fallen away, they need to enjoy much care, that they may not suffer the things I have spoken of,' but instead he enjoined marriage? Because it is not forbidden, because it establishes them in safety;
15:54
namely, to give no occasion to the adversary for reviling, nor any handle.
15:55
For already some have turned aside after Satan.
15:56
所以他禁止這樣的寡婦,並非不願有年輕的寡婦,乃是不願她們作淫婦,不願她們懶惰、好管閒事、說些不當說的話,不願給魔鬼留機會;
He therefore forbids such widows, not wishing that there should be no younger widows, but not wishing them to be adulteresses, not wishing them to be idle and busybodies, speaking things they ought not, not wishing to give the devil an occasion;
15:57
for if it were not so, he would not have forbidden it.
15:58
But if any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and let not the Church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are widows indeed.
15:59
Do you see how again he calls those 'widows indeed' who are left alone, who have consolation from no quarter? For thus it was better.
15:60
For two very great things came about: both those persons received an occasion of doing good, and these women were well maintained, and the Church was not burdened.
15:61
他加上「若有信主的」這話,甚是恰當;
Well did he add, 'If any believer';
15:62
for the believing women ought not to be maintained by unbelievers, lest they should seem to have need of them.
15:63
且看他說話是何等富有安慰之意;
And observe how consolingly he speaks;
15:64
he did not say, 'Let him furnish some lavish provision,' but, 'Let them relieve them.'
15:65
'That the Church,' he says, 'may relieve those who are widows indeed.'
15:66
如此,這人也因這救濟得著賞賜;
So then, she also has her reward for this succour;
15:67
in helping this one, she helps not this one only, but those others also, leaving them to be maintained with ample provision.
15:68
I desire the younger women—to do what? To live delicately? To be wanton? Nothing of the sort, but: to marry, to bear children, to guide the house.
15:69
For that you might not think he was urging them to luxury, he added:
15:70
'to give no occasion to the adversary for reviling.'
15:71
因為她們本當高過今生的事務;
For they ought indeed to have been above the concerns of this life;
15:72
but since they have become inferior to them, let them at least stand fast in these very things.
15:73
Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in word and teaching.
15:74
「牛在場上踹穀的時候,不可籠住牠的嘴」;
'You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain';
15:75
and, 'The labourer is worthy of his wages.'
15:76
By 'honour' here he means the ministering to them, the supply of necessary things.
15:77
For the fact that he adds, 'You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain,' and, 'The labourer is worthy of his wages,' makes this plain.
15:78
所以,當他說「要敬奉寡婦」時,也是指供給她們日用的飲食而言,他說:「好使教會能救濟那真為寡婦的」;
So then, when he says, 'Honour widows,' he means this concerning the supply of necessary food, 'that it may relieve those who are widows indeed,' he says;
15:79
又說:「要敬奉那真為寡婦的」;
and again, 'Honour those who are widows indeed';
15:80
for the more anyone is in poverty, so much the more is she a widow.
15:81
He sets down the testimony of the Law, he sets down that of Christ, both in agreement.
15:82
For the Law says, 'You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain.'
15:83
Do you see how he desires that the teacher should toil? For there is not, there is not, any other labour such as his.
15:84
然而那一句是出於律法的;
But that saying is from the Law;
15:85
and how does he set down the saying of Christ also? 'For,' he says, 'the labourer is worthy of his wages.'
15:86
所以我們不可單注意工價,也要注意他是怎樣吩咐的;
Let us therefore not attend to the wages alone, but also to how he gave the command;
15:87
for he says, 'The labourer is worthy of his food.'
15:88
如此,若有人奢華度日、放蕩不羈,他就不配;
So that if anyone lives delicately and is dissolute, he is not worthy;
15:89
unless one be like an ox treading out the grain, one that endures the yoke both in the stifling heat and among the thorns, and does not leave off before it has brought the fruits into the storehouses—he is not worthy.
15:90
所以,日用所需的供給應當豐豐富富地流向教師,使他們既不疲乏,也不至於力盡,也免得他們忙於瑣事,就叫自己失去了那大事;
Therefore the supply of necessary things ought to flow abundantly to the teachers, that they may neither grow weary nor be worn out, nor, by busying themselves about petty matters, deprive themselves of the great;
15:91
that they may work the things of the Spirit, taking no account of the concerns of this life.
15:92
從前的利未人正是這樣;
Such were the Levites;
15:93
they had no care for the things of this life, because the laity cared for their provision, and by law the matters of their revenues were appointed—such as the tithes, the offerings from the gold, the firstfruits, the vows, and many other things.
15:94
然而對那些人,這樣立法是合宜的,因為他們所尋求的是今世的事物;
But for those it was reasonable that he legislated these things, inasmuch as they sought the present things;
15:95
but I say nothing more than that those who preside ought to have food and covering, that they may not be dragged about after these things.
15:96
And what does 'double honour' mean? Double that given to the widows, or that given to the deacons, or simply, by 'double honour' he means 'much honour.'
15:97
Let us therefore not consider this only, that he counted them worthy of double honour, but also that he added, 'those who rule well.'
15:98
And what is 'ruling well'? Let us hear Christ saying:
15:99
'The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.'
15:100
So then this is to rule well: to spare nothing for the sake of their care.
15:101
'Especially,' he says, 'those who labour in word and teaching.'
15:102
如今那些說用不著傳道、也用不著教導的人在哪裡呢?既然他用這麼多話勸勉提摩太說:「這些事你要殷勤去作,並要專心在其中」;
Where now are those who say there is no need of the word, nor of teaching? seeing that he exhorts Timothy with so many words, saying, 'Meditate on these things, give yourself wholly to them';
15:103
又說:「你要專心宣讀、勸勉」;
and again, 'Give attention to reading, to exhortation';
15:104
'for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.'
15:105
他尤其願意這等人在眾人之上受敬奉;
And these especially, above all others, he desires to be honoured;
15:106
and he gives the reason, that they endure much toil, he says.
15:107
因為當這一人既不儆醒、也不操心,只不過安然閒逸、無憂無慮地坐在他的席位上,而那另一人卻為思慮、鑽研勞苦困乏—尤其當他連外邦的言詞也未經操練時—他怎能不在眾人之上大得敬奉呢?既然他把自己交付於這樣大的勞苦。因為他要向千萬張口交代;
For when the one man neither keeps vigil nor takes thought, but simply sits in his seat in ease and freedom from care, while that other man wears himself out with anxious thought and study—and especially when he is unpractised even in outward speech—how ought he not above all others to enjoy honour, seeing that he gives himself up to such great toils? For he is answerable to ten thousand tongues;
15:108
有人責備,有人稱讚,有人譏誚,有人非議他的記性和他的組織條理;
one man found fault, another praised, another mocked, another slandered his memory and his composition;
15:109
and he needs much strength to bear these things.
15:110
這對建立教會是一件大事,作領袖的人善於教導,於此大有裨益;
This is a great thing towards the building up of the Church, and it contributes much that those who preside be apt to teach;
15:111
and if this be lacking, many of the things in the Churches are lost.
15:112
For this reason, along with the other qualities—along with hospitality and mildness, along with being blameless—he reckons this also, saying, 'apt to teach.'
15:113
Since why is he called a teacher? 'Yes,' one says, 'that by his life he may teach true wisdom.'
15:114
So that these things are superfluous, and there is no need of teaching by words for advancement.
15:115
And how does Paul say, 'Especially those who labour in word and teaching'? For when the discourse is concerning doctrines, what force has life there? But what 'word' does he mean? Not the boastful, nor that which has the outward elegance, but that which has acquired much strength of the Spirit, that which is full of understanding and prudence.
15:116
He has no need, then, of artifice and diction, but of thoughts; not of arrangement of words, but of understanding.
15:117
Against an elder receive not an accusation, except before two or three witnesses.
15:118
For ought one to receive an accusation against a younger man without witnesses? And ought not one always to conduct judgments with strictness against anyone whatsoever? What then is it that he means? Not even in the case of others, he says, but most of all against an elder.
15:119
For here he calls him elder, not in respect of dignity, but of age, since the young sin more easily than the old.
15:120
由此可見,提摩太此時已受託管理一間教會,甚至是整個亞西亞地區;
And it is clear from this that Timothy had by now been entrusted with a Church, or even with an entire nation, that of Asia;
15:121
wherefore also he discourses to him concerning elders.
15:122
Them that sin rebuke before all, that the rest also may have fear.
15:123
這就是說:不要輕率地割除,乃要以極其審慎的態度察究一切;
That is to say: Cut not off hastily, but examine everything with great exactness;
15:124
when, however, you have learned the matter clearly, then proceed vigorously, that the rest may be brought to soberness.
15:125
For just as to condemn without ground is harmful, so also not to proceed against manifest sins is to give the rest a way to do the same things and to be emboldened.
15:126
他說要責備,表明這不是隨隨便便,乃是要帶著嚴厲;
Rebuke, he says, showing that it is to be done not simply, but with severity;
15:127
for thus the rest also will have fear.
15:128
How then does Christ say, Go, tell him his fault between you and him alone, if he shall sin against you? Yet he too permits that man to be reproved in the Church.
15:129
What then? Does not being reproved before all rather cause offense? How so? For when men know the sin, but not the punishment, they are the more offended.
15:130
因為正如犯罪的人若不受刑罰,作惡的就多;
For as, when sinners remain unpunished, many are the transgressors,
15:131
so, when they are chastised, many are they who walk uprightly.
15:132
He brought Pharaoh into the midst and punished him, and Nebuchadnezzar, and many others; and we see them, both by cities and by individual men, paying the penalty.
15:133
So then he wishes all to have fear of the bishop, and he sets him over all.
15:134
For since many things are judged upon suspicion, there must be, he says, those who bear witness and convict him, according to the old law.
15:135
For at the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
15:136
Against an elder, he says, receive not an accusation.
15:137
He did not say, Do not condemn, but, Do not even receive an accusation, nor at all admit it to judgment.
15:138
那麼,若這兩個人也說謊呢?這樣的事極其罕見;
What then, if the two also should lie? This happens very rarely;
15:139
and it is possible for this too to become clear by being scrutinized in the trial.
15:140
至於罪,能有兩個見證人就算難得了,因為罪都是隱密暗中所犯的;
For as to sins, it is well even to have two witnesses, because they are committed secretly and in concealment;
15:141
so that this is a sign of much careful testing.
15:142
What then, if the sins be acknowledged, yet he have no witnesses, but only an evil suspicion? I said above, he says: He must also have a good testimony from those without.
15:143
所以我們要帶著敬畏來愛神;
Let us therefore love God with fear;
15:144
因為律法不是為義人設立的;
for the law is not laid down for a righteous man;
15:145
but the many, who pursue virtue by necessity and not by choice, reap great benefit from fear, often cutting off their own lusts.
15:146
For this cause let us hear about hell, that we may reap much profit from this threatening and fear.
15:147
For if He who was about to cast
15:148
sinners into it had not foretold the threat of it, many would have fallen into it.
15:149
因為若如今在這懼怕震動我們魂的時候,仍有些人這樣輕易犯罪,彷彿地獄根本不存在;
For if now, while the fear shakes our souls, there are some who so easily sin as though it did not even exist;
15:150
if none of these things had been said or threatened, what dreadful thing should we not have done? So that, as I always say, hell no less than the kingdom shows the providence of God.
15:151
For hell works together with the kingdom, driving men by fear toward it.
15:152
Let us not then think the matter to be one of harshness or cruelty, but of much mercy and lovingkindness and care and of the affection He bears toward us.
15:153
若不是藉約拿宣告了傾覆的警戒,那傾覆就不會得以攔阻;
If the overthrow had not been threatened against Jonah, the overthrow would not have been prevented;
15:154
他若不曾說「尼尼微必傾覆了」,尼尼微就不能存留;
if he had not said, Nineveh shall be overthrown, Nineveh would not have stood;
15:155
若不是有地獄的警戒,我們就都要落入地獄了;
if hell had not been threatened, we should all have fallen into hell;
15:156
if the fire had not been threatened, no one would have escaped the fire.
15:157
He speaks the contrary of what He wills, in order that He may bring to pass what He wills.
15:158
祂不喜悅罪人死亡,卻宣講罪人的死,為要免得把人投入死亡;
He does not will the death of the sinner, and He speaks of the death of the sinner, that He may not cast him into death;
15:159
He said it not by word only, but also shows it by deed, that we may flee.
15:160
And that no one might think the matter to be a mere threat, but that it truly exists, He made this clear from the things which have here come to pass.
15:161
Or does not the deluge seem to you a symbol of hell, that rain of fire bringing utter and complete destruction? For as, He says, in the days of Noah they were marrying and giving in marriage, so also now.
15:162
祂那時在許久以前就預先說了,如今又在四百年、甚或更多年以前預先宣告;卻沒有一個人留意;
He foretold it then a long time before, and now He foretells it four hundred years, or even more, beforehand; but there is no one who gives heed;
15:163
all think the matter to be fables, all a matter for laughter; no one is held by fear, no one weeps, no one smites his breast.
15:164
The river of fire boils up, the flame is kindled, and yet we laugh and live luxuriously and sin without fear.
15:165
No one ever takes that day into his mind, no one considers that present things pass away, that these are but for a season, though the very affairs of life cry out day by day and utter their voice.
15:166
Untimely deaths, the changes of circumstances taking place even while we are living, do not instruct us; the sicknesses and the other diseases.
15:167
人不但在我們的身體上,也能在諸元素本身之中看見這些變遷;
And one might see these changes not in our bodies only, but also in the very elements;
15:168
and in the seasons of life too we rehearse death day by day, and in all things instability is everywhere marked out through the course of events.
15:169
Winter never remained, nor summer, nor spring, nor autumn, but all things run and fly away and flow past.
15:170
But what would you have me speak of? The flowers, the dignities, the kings who are now and to-morrow are no more? Or the rich? Or the splendid buildings? Or night and day? Or the sun? Or the moon? Does not she too wane? And does not the sun itself often suffer eclipse, is it not darkened, does not a cloud hide it? Does anything of the things that are seen remain forever? Nothing, but the soul alone of the things within us; and even of this we take no care.
15:171
因為那些變幻的事物,我們卻當作長存的來大加籌謀;
For the things which change we make much provision, as though they abode;
15:172
but for that which abides, we ever have no account, as though it were passing away.
15:173
某人大有權勢麼?但這不過到明日為止,此後他就要滅亡;
So-and-so has great power? But it is only till to-morrow, and after that he shall perish;
15:174
and this is plain from those who had greater power, and now are nowhere to be seen.
15:175
Life is a kind of stage-play and a dream.
15:176
因為正如在戲臺上,佈景一撤去,那各樣的裝飾景象就都消散了;又如日光一顯現,眾夢就都飛逝了;
For just as upon the stage, when the scenery is taken away, the various shows are dissolved, and dreams all fly away when the ray of day appears;
15:177
so also now, when the consummation comes, both the common one and that of each single man, all things are dissolved and vanish.
15:178
你所栽種的樹木存留,你所建造的房屋,這也存留;
And the tree which you have planted remains, and the house which you are building, this too remains;
15:179
but the craftsman and the husbandman are led away and perish.
15:180
And though these things come to pass, not even so are we brought to shame, but as though immortal we prepare all these things, living in luxury and wantonness.
15:181
Hear what Solomon says, who by experience made trial of the things present.
15:182
I built me houses, he says, I planted gardens and orchards, vineyards and pools of water; silver and gold I gathered to myself; I made me men singers and women singers, flocks and herds.
15:183
For no one ever became so luxurious, no one so glorious, no one so wise, no one so great a ruler, no one saw all things thus prospering according to his mind as he did.
15:184
結果如何呢?他從這一切中毫無所得;
What then? He had no profit of any of these things;
15:185
他經歷這一切之後說了甚麼呢?他說:虛空的虛空,凡事都是虛空;
but what does he say after all these things? Vanity, he says, of vanities, all is vanity;
15:186
not simply vanity, but in the highest degree.
15:187
我懇求你們,讓我們聽從祂,聽從那位親身經歷過的主;
Let us be persuaded by Him, I beseech you, by Him who has come through experience;
15:188
let us be persuaded by Him, and lay hold of those realities where there is no longer vanity, where there is truth, where all things are fixed and firm, where all things are built upon the rock, where old age is not, nor passing away, where all things flourish, where all things are in their prime, where nothing grows old, nor ages, nor draws near to decay.
15:189
Let us truly long for God, I beseech you, not from fear of hell, but from desire for the kingdom.
15:190
For what, tell me, is equal to seeing Christ? Nothing at all.
15:191
又有甚麼能與享受那些美善之物相比呢?甚麼都沒有;
And what is equal to enjoying those good things? There is nothing;
15:192
for 'eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God,' he says, 'has prepared for those who love Him.'
15:193
Let us be zealous to attain those things; let us despise these present things.
15:194
Do we not ten thousand times accuse them, saying that human life is nothing? Why then are you so eager about that which is nothing? Why do you undergo toils for that which is nothing? But you behold splendid buildings, and their appearance deceives you? Then look at once toward heaven; lift up your eyes from the stones and columns to that beauty, and you will see that these things are the works of ants and gnats.
15:195
上升到那在天上的事物;
Ascend to the things that are in heaven;
15:196
from thence consider these splendid buildings, and you will see that they are nothing, but the playthings of little children.
15:197
Have you seen how much finer, how much lighter, how much purer and more transparent the air is, the higher you ascend into the heights? There the workers of almsgiving have their dwellings, their tabernacles.
15:198
這些地上的事物在復活的時候要被拆毀;不但如此,甚至在復活之先,時間臨到它們,已經敗壞、消滅並瓦解了它們;
These earthly things are dissolved at the resurrection; nay rather, even before the resurrection, time coming upon them has corrupted, obliterated, and dissolved them;
15:199
and even before time, often in their very prime and bloom either an earthquake has thrown them down, or a conflagration has ruined the whole.
15:200
因為不僅在人的年歲中,就是在建築之中,也有夭折之死;
For indeed not only among the ages of men, but also among buildings, there are untimely deaths;
15:201
並且往往那些因年久而朽壞的,在大地震動時,卻屹立不動;
and often those that have become decayed by time, when the earth was shaken, have remained unmoved;
15:202
而那些光耀奪目、堅固牢靠、新近建成的,卻因一聲雷擊便震塌並毀滅了;
while those that were resplendent, and firmly set, and newly constructed, by a single thunderclap were shaken down and destroyed;
15:203
and this, I think, by God's arrangement, that we may not think highly of ourselves in our buildings.
15:204
Do you wish also in another way not to be despondent? Come to the public buildings, in which you too have an equal share.
15:205
For there is not, there is not any private house, however exceedingly splendid, more splendid than the public edifices.
15:206
你隨你所願,在那裡逗留多久都可以;
Spend as long a time there as you wish;
15:207
那些都是你的,是你與眾人一同享有的;
those things are yours, they are yours together with the rest;
15:208
'But these things do not delight me,' someone says.
15:209
They do not delight you, first because of familiarity, and secondly because of covetousness.
15:210
如此看來,使人喜悅的乃是貪心,並不是那美麗;
So then it is covetousness that is the delightful thing, not the beauty;
15:211
so then the delight is covetousness, and the wish to appropriate to oneself the things that belong to all.
15:212
我們要被釘牢在這些事物上多久呢?我們要被固定在地上、像蟲一般在污泥中打滾多久呢?神從地上把身體賜給我們,是要我們把身體也帶上天去,而不是要藉著身體把靈魂也拉下到地上;
How long shall we be nailed to these things? How long shall we be fixed to the earth, and, like worms, wallow about in the mire? God gave us the body out of earth, that we might also lead it up to heaven, not that through it we might drag down the soul also to earth;
15:213
it is earthy, but, if I will, it becomes heavenly.
15:214
See with how great an honour He has honoured us, in committing to us such a work.
15:215
祂說:「我造了天地;
'I made,' He says, 'earth and heaven;
15:216
I give to you also a work of creation: make the earth heaven;'
15:217
'He who makes all things, and transforms them' — this is said concerning God.
15:218
但這權柄祂也賜給了人;
But this power He has given to men also;
15:219
just as some affectionate father who paints not by himself alone, but wishes to guide his child also into the art.
15:220
祂說:「我造了美好的身體;
'I made,' He says, 'a beautiful body;
15:221
I give to you the fashioning of the better part;'
15:222
'I said, Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass, and every fruitful tree;'
15:223
'say you too, Let this earth bring forth its own fruit, and there shall come forth whatever you wish to effect.'
15:224
'I make summer and mist, I establish the thunder, and create the wind, I formed the dragon to make sport of it' — that is, the devil.
15:225
「我也沒有向你吝惜這權柄;
'Neither have I grudged you this power;
15:226
你若願意,也儘可戲弄牠;
make sport of it too, if you will;
15:227
for you are able to bind it like a sparrow.'
15:228
「我叫日頭照好人,也照歹人;
'I make the sun to rise upon the evil and the good;
15:229
imitate you too, impart of your goods both to good and evil.'
15:230
「我受人凌辱仍能忍耐,並且善待那凌辱我的人;
'When insulted I bear it, and I do good to those who insult me;
15:231
我行善,並不為著報答;
I do good, not for a recompense;
15:232
imitate you too, and do not do good for a recompense, nor for a return.'
15:233
「我在天上點燃了發光之體;
'I kindled luminaries in heaven;
15:234
你也當點燃比這些更明亮的光體,因為你能夠;
kindle you too luminaries brighter than these, for you are able;
15:235
that benefit is greater — for you to acknowledge Me than to see the sun.'
15:236
'A man you cannot make, but a righteous man you can make, and one well-pleasing to God.'
15:237
「我造成了本質;
'I wrought the substance;
15:238
adorn you the will.'
15:239
'See how I love you, that in the greater things also I have given you the power.'
15:240
親愛的,你們看,我們是以何等大的尊榮受了尊崇;
See, beloved, with how great honour we have been honoured;
15:241
and yet certain senseless and thankless persons say, 'Why are we masters of our own will?' All these things which we have gone through, in which we are able to imitate God, if there were no will, it would not be possible for us to imitate Him.
15:242
'I rule over angels,' He says, 'and you too through the first-fruits.'
15:243
「我坐在王的寶座上;
'I sit upon a royal throne;
15:244
and you too sit together with Me through the first-fruits;'
15:245
'He raised us up together,' he says, 'and made us sit together at the right hand of the Father.'
15:246
'The Cherubim and the Seraphim worship you, all the angelic host — principalities, powers, thrones, dominions — through the first-fruits.'
15:247
Do not accuse the body, which enjoys so great an honour, at which even the bodiless powers tremble.
15:248
But what shall I say? I show My love not to these things only, but also by the things which I suffered.
15:249
「為你的緣故,我被人吐唾沫,被人掌摑,我倒空了我的榮耀,離開了父,來到你這恨我、背棄我、甚至連我的名都不願聽的人這裡;
'For your sake I was spat upon, I was buffeted, I emptied Myself of My glory, I left the Father, and I came to you who hated Me and turned away from Me, and were not even willing to hear My name;
15:250
我追趕你,奔跑著追你,為要抓住你;
I pursued and ran after you, that I might lay hold of you;
15:251
I united you and joined you to Myself;'
15:252
'And above I hold you, and below I embrace you.'
15:253
'Is it not enough for you that I have your first-fruits above? Does this not console your longing? And below again I have come down; not simply do I mingle with you, but I am intertwined, I am eaten, I am broken small little by little, that great may be the commingling and the mixture and the union.'
15:254
因為那些聯合之物是各存於自己的界限之內;
For things that are united remain within their own bounds;
15:255
「我不願再有甚麼東西夾在中間;
'I no longer wish there to be anything in between;
15:256
I wish the two to be one.'
15:257
我們既然知道這些事,也知道祂對我們何等深切的看顧,就當竭力去做一切能使我們顯為不至於配不上祂宏大恩賜的事;
Knowing these things, therefore, and His great providence toward us, let us do everything that is able to prove us not unworthy of His great gifts;
15:258
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, and honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
