'These things teach and exhort.'
17:2
'If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse wranglings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain.'
17:3
'From such withdraw thyself.'
17:4
'But godliness with contentment is great gain.'
17:5
因為我們沒有帶甚麼到這世界來;
For we brought nothing into this world;
17:6
and it is plain that neither can we carry anything out.
17:7
A teacher needs not only authority, but also much gentleness; just as he needs not gentleness only, but authority as well.
17:8
And all these things the blessed Paul teaches, at one time saying,
17:9
'Command these things and teach them,' and at another, 'Teach these things and exhort.'
17:10
因為醫生若勸勉病人,並非為叫自己得健康,乃是為叫那些人脫離軟弱,使躺臥的得以起來;
For if physicians exhort the sick, not that they themselves may attain to health, but that they may free those others from their infirmity and raise up such as lie prostrate,
17:11
much more ought we to use this disposition of gentleness toward those we teach, exhorting them.
17:12
For not even to be their servant does the blessed Paul refuse, saying,
17:13
他說:「我們原不是傳自己,乃是傳基督耶穌為主,並因耶穌作你們的僕人」;
'For we preach not ourselves,' he says, 'but Christ Jesus, and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake';
17:14
and again, 'All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos.'
17:15
他甘心樂意地盡這樣的服事;
And he performs this service with eagerness;
17:16
for it is not servitude, but something better than freedom.
17:17
'For that one,' he says, 'is a slave who commits sin.'
17:18
'If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the teaching which is according to godliness, he is puffed up, knowing nothing.'
17:19
So then it is not from knowing that one comes to be lifted up
17:20
into arrogance, but from not knowing.
17:21
因為那知道合乎敬虔之話語的人,這人尤其知道存謙和節制之心;
For he who knows the words that accord with godliness, that man above all knows also to be moderate;
17:22
he who understands the wholesome words is not diseased.
17:23
因為在身體上是發炎,在魂裏就是狂傲;
For what inflammation is in bodies, that is arrogance in souls;
17:24
and as there we say that the inflamed part is not healthy, so neither here do we say the boastful are.
17:25
如此看來,人雖然知道些甚麼,卻可能一無所知;
So then it is possible for one who knows something to know nothing;
17:26
for he who knows not the things he ought to know, knows nothing.
17:27
And that pride comes from knowing nothing is plain from this:
17:28
基督倒空了自己;
Christ emptied Himself;
17:29
所以那知道這事的人,就永不會自高自大;
he therefore who knows this will never think highly of himself;
17:30
因為人一無所有,除非是從神而來的;
for a man has nothing, except from God;
17:31
'For what hast thou that thou didst not receive?' He Himself washed the feet of the disciples.
17:32
He who knows this, how shall he be lifted up? For this reason He says, 'When ye have done all things, say that We are unprofitable servants.'
17:33
The publican was approved from humility alone, while the Pharisee perished from boastfulness.
17:34
The man puffed up, therefore, understands none of these things.
17:35
Christ Himself again says,
17:36
「我若說得不對,你可以指證那不對之處;
'If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil;
17:37
but if well, why smitest thou Me?' But being diseased, he says, about questionings.
17:38
So then to question is to be diseased.
17:39
For when the soul is fevered by reasonings, when it is storm-tossed, then it questions; but when it is in health, then it does not question, but receives the faith.
17:40
But from questioning and word-battles nothing is to be found.
17:41
For the things which faith alone promises, when questioning takes them in hand, it neither shows them nor allows them to be understood.
17:42
For neither, if a man having shut his eyes wishes to find something of the things sought, will he be able; nor again, if with these open he buries himself and turns away from the beam of light, and there seeks, will he be able to find anything.
17:43
So without faith nothing is found, but of necessity strifes are begotten.
17:44
From which come blasphemies, evil surmisings.
17:45
That is, evil opinions and doctrines from the questionings.
17:46
Then we suspect concerning God what we ought not, whenever we fall into questionings.
17:47
that is, leisure or occupation.
17:48
或者他是指這個意思:彼此的相磨相擦;
Or he means this: mutual frictions;
17:49
just as the mangy among sheep, being rubbed against, fill the healthy ones also with disease, so also do these wicked men.
17:50
'And being destitute,' he says, 'of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain.'
17:51
你看見他說言詞之爭生出多少事來麼?貪不義之財、無知、狂傲;
Do you see how many things he says word-battles beget? sordid gain, ignorance, arrogance;
17:52
for ignorance begets arrogance.
17:53
'From these,' he says, 'withdraw thyself.'
17:54
He did not say, 'Close with them,' but, 'Withdraw thyself,' that is, turn aside.
17:55
'For a heretical man,' he says, 'after a first and second admonition reject.'
17:56
He shows that they have this ignorance itself not so much from ignorance as from slothfulness.
17:57
For when will you be able to persuade men who contend for the sake of money? You will not otherwise persuade such men, unless you give again; and not even so will you fill up their desire.
17:58
'For the eye of the covetous man,' he says, 'is not filled with his portion.'
17:59
One must therefore turn away from them, since they are past correction.
17:60
But if to him who has great necessity of contending he counsels not to close with them nor to grapple, much more does he so counsel us who are being taught, who are in the rank of disciples.
17:61
And having said that they suppose godliness to be a means of gain, he added:
17:62
'But godliness with contentment is great gain,' not when one has money, but when one has it not.
17:63
免得人因貧窮陷入灰心喪志,他就把人扶起,使人重新站立;
For lest he fall into despondency because of poverty, he raises him up and sets him upright;
17:64
'They suppose,' he says, 'that it is a means of gain.'
17:65
For it is indeed, but not in that way—rather in a greater.
17:66
Then, having first cast down that gain, he then exalts this.
17:67
For that this gain is nothing is plain from its remaining here, and not changing its place with us, nor journeying abroad with us.
17:68
從何處顯明呢?因為我們來到這世上時,一無所有;
Whence is this plain? Because we came into this life having nothing;
17:69
所以我們離世時,也必一無所有;
therefore we shall depart having nothing;
17:70
for naked came our nature into being, and naked shall it depart.
17:71
所以我們不需要那些多餘之物;
We have no need, therefore, of superfluous things;
17:72
if we brought in nothing, neither shall we depart having anything.
17:73
只要有食物和遮蓋,有這些我們就當知足;
But having food and covering, with these we shall be content;
17:74
以及那些足夠養身的東西;
and such things as suffice to nourish;
17:75
要穿那只需遮蓋我們、掩藏我們的赤身的衣物,別無多餘;
to be clothed with such things as ought only to cover us and to hide our nakedness, nothing superfluous;
17:76
and even a common garment is able to accomplish this.
17:77
Then he exhorts them by considerations drawn from things here below.
17:78
'But those who desire to be rich,' he says,
17:79
He did not say simply, 'Those who are rich,' but, 'Those who desire' to be so.
17:80
For it is possible for one who possesses wealth to manage it well, to despise it, and to distribute it among the poor.
17:81
It is not such men, then, that he censures, but those who covet.
17:82
'But those who desire to be rich,' he says, 'fall into temptation and a snare of the devil, and into many foolish and hurtful desires, which drown men.'
17:83
Well did he say, 'They drown them,' so that they cannot even come up again to breathe.
17:84
'For the love of money is a root of all evils, which while some coveted after, they were led astray from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.'
17:85
Behold, he sets down two things; but that which seems to them the more grievous, this he has here placed last, namely, 'with many sorrows.'
17:86
And these things cannot be learned otherwise than by dwelling near the rich, and seeing how much they lament, how much they bewail.
17:87
'But you, O man of God,'
17:88
For all men indeed are God's, but the righteous are so in a special sense, not only according to the principle of creation, but also according to that of appropriation.
17:89
他說,你若是屬神的人,就不要尋求那些多餘、又不能引你歸向神的事物;
If you are a man of God, he says, do not seek superfluous things, which do not lead you to God;
17:90
but 'flee these things, and pursue righteousness.'
17:91
He did not say, 'Withdraw from them, and approach,' but, 'Flee, and pursue righteousness,' so as not to be grasping.
17:92
「敬虔」——就是純正的教義;
'Godliness,'—that is, soundness of doctrine;
17:93
「信心」——這正是與辯論爭議相反的;
'faith,' which is opposed to questioning;
17:94
'love, patience, meekness.'
17:95
'Fight the good fight of faith; lay hold on eternal life,'
17:96
'to which you were called, and confessed the good confession in the hope of eternal life before many witnesses.'
17:97
這就是說,不要羞辱那份坦然無懼的宣認;
That is, Do not put to shame that boldness of confession;
17:98
why do you toil unprofitably? And what kind of temptation and snare does he say that those who desire to be rich endure? For it leads them astray from the faith, surrounds them with dangers, and makes them more faint-hearted.
17:99
'And foolish desires,' he says.
17:100
For how is a desire not foolish, when men keep idiots, when they keep dwarfs—not out of love for mankind, but for amusement; when they shut up fish in their courtyards, when they rear wild beasts, when they busy themselves about dogs, when they adorn horses and care for them no less than for their own children? All these things are foolish and superfluous, nothing necessary, nothing useful.
17:101
'Desires,' he says, 'foolish and hurtful.'
17:102
What kind are hurtful? When men are inflamed with unnatural lusts, when they covet their neighbour's goods, when they wrestle with luxury, when they crave drunkenness, when they thirst for slaughter and the destruction of others.
17:103
And many, from such lusts, have even attempted tyranny, and perished.
17:104
Truly such a man toils for things unprofitable, or rather even hurtful.
17:105
他說得好,「他們被引誘離了真道」;
And well did he say, 'They were led astray from the faith;'
17:106
for the love of money does not allow them to see the way, drawing their eyes towards itself, and little by little pilfering them away.
17:107
正如一個人走在筆直的道路上,心思卻繫於別的事物,他固然在往前走,卻常常不知不覺地錯過了他本來急切要去的那座城,他的腳只是漫無目的、徒然地被拖著走;
For just as a man walking along a straight road, but having his mind fixed on something else, indeed walks on, yet unwittingly passes by many a time that very city to which he was hastening, his feet being dragged along aimlessly and in vain;
17:108
such a thing also is the love of money.
17:109
'And pierced themselves through with many sorrows.'
17:110
Do you see what he hinted at by the word 'pierced through'? What he wishes to make plain through this vivid expression is this:
17:111
情慾就是荊棘,正如荊棘一般,無論從哪一面去抓它,都會叫手流血、造成傷口;
the desires are thorns, and just as with thorns, from whatever side one takes hold of them, they bloody the hands and inflict wounds;
17:112
so also from these desires the same thing will befall the man who has fallen among them, and he will encompass his soul with pangs.
17:113
How many cares, how many sorrows do those who have surrendered themselves to these things possess, tell me? It is impossible to tell.
17:114
Therefore he says, 'Flee these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.'
17:115
在這裡,他稱讚他的坦然無懼和勇氣;
Here he praises his boldness and his manliness;
17:116
for, he says, with boldness you made confession before all.
17:117
他也提醒他所受過的要理教導;
And he reminds him also of his catechetical instruction;
17:118
'Lay hold,' he says, 'on eternal life.'
17:119
所以,不僅需要宣認,也需要恆忍,好使人始終持守那宣認;理所當然,也需要劇烈的爭戰與無數的汗水,好叫人不至傾覆;
There is need, then, not of confession only, but also of patient endurance, so as to abide continually in the confession, and, reasonably, of vehement struggle and countless sweats, so as not to be overturned;
17:120
for many are the stumbling-blocks, many the hindrances.
17:121
Therefore the way is strait and narrow.
17:122
所以人必須四面束緊自己,四面裝束輕便;
On every side, then, one must be girded up; on every side one must be light-equipped for the journey;
17:123
無數的享樂從四面八方顯現,吸引著靈魂的眼目——肉體的、錢財的、奢華的、怠惰的、虛榮的、忿怒的、權勢的、貪愛掌權的享樂;它們顯出光鮮動人、令人愛慕的面容,足以吸引那些心浮氣躁、那些並不熱切愛慕真理的人;
countless pleasures appear on every side, drawing the eyes of the soul—the pleasures of bodies, of riches, of luxury, of indolence, of glory, of anger, of power, of the love of rule; and they appear to have brilliant and desirable faces, able to draw away those who are agitated, those who do not vehemently love the truth;
17:124
for she indeed is austere, and has nothing delightful about her.
17:125
這是為甚麼呢?因為她把一切的喜樂都應許在將來的世代;
Why is that? Because she promises all her pleasure in the age to come;
17:126
but those pleasures hold out at once honours, delights, reposes—not true ones, but painted over with a false colour.
17:127
If, therefore, anyone be vulgar and soft and unmanly, he will cling to those pleasures, being unstrung for the toils undertaken on behalf of virtue.
17:128
在外界的競技場上也是如此,那不熱切渴慕冠冕的人,從一開始就可以任意沉溺於宴樂和酗酒;
So also in the outward contests, he who does not vehemently love the crowns is free from the very first to give himself up to feasts and drinking-bouts;
17:129
至少那些拳手中膽怯而無丈夫氣概的人正是如此行;
such at least is what the cowardly and unmanly among the boxers do;
17:130
但那些定睛於冠冕的人,卻能忍受無數的擊打;
but those who look to the crown bear up under countless blows;
17:131
for they are nourished and roused up by the hope of the things to come.
17:132
Let us therefore flee the root of evils, and we shall flee them all.
17:133
'The love of money,' he says, 'is a root'—Paul uttered it, or rather Christ through Paul.
17:134
And the very experience of affairs bears witness to it.
17:135
有甚麼禍患不是因錢財而來的呢——或者更確切地說,不是因錢財本身,而是因那些不曉得如何運用它之人的邪惡心志呢?既然可以將錢財用於所當用的,人甚至可以藉著它承受一個國度;
For what evil is not on account of money—or rather, not on account of money, but on account of the evil purpose of those who do not know how to use it? Since it was possible to use money for what is needful, it was possible even to inherit a kingdom by means of it;
17:136
but now the very things that were given for the succour of the poor, for the consolation of our sins, for winning God's approval and pleasing Him, these we have used against the wretched poor, or rather against our own souls, and to the provoking of God.
17:137
因為有人奪去別人的錢財,使他陷入貧窮,卻使自己陷入死亡;
For one man has robbed another of his money and cast him into poverty, but himself into death;
17:138
and he wastes the one away here by poverty, but himself by everlasting punishment.
17:139
Is it then equal? What evil, then, is not on account of these things? Are there not acts of covetousness? robberies? lamentations? enmities? battles? contentions? Have they not stretched out their hands even against the dead? even against fathers and brothers? Have they not overturned the laws of nature, and the commandments of God, and, in a word, everything, being held fast by that desire? Are not the law-courts for the sake of these things? Take away, then, the love of money, and war has ceased, battle has ceased, enmity has ceased, strife and contention have ceased.
17:140
Such men ought to be driven out of the world like ravagers and wolves.
17:141
正如某些狂猛的逆風吹向平靜的海面,將它從最深處翻攪起來,以致海底的沙與上面的波浪相混;
For just as certain contrary and violent winds, blowing upon a calm sea, overturn it from its very foundations, so that the sand at the bottom is mingled with the waves above;
17:142
so those who love money turn everything upside down.
17:143
貪愛錢財的人不認得任何朋友;
The lover of money knows no friend;
17:144
但我何必說朋友呢?他甚至連神自己也不認識;
but why do I say a friend? He does not even acknowledge God Himself;
17:145
For being held fast by that lust, he is out of his mind.
17:146
Do you not see the Titans advancing sword in hand? Those things are a mere feigning of madness.
17:147
But these men are not like that; they are truly mad and beside themselves.
17:148
And if you were to strip bare their soul, you would find it thus armed, holding not one sword nor two, but ten thousand; recognizing no one, but raging against all, leaping upon all and howling against all, slaughtering not dogs but the souls of men, and reaching up even to heaven itself.
17:149
By these men all things have been overthrown, all things utterly destroyed, through the madness for money.
17:150
For whom, whom I am to accuse, I do not know.
17:151
So does this pestilence hold all men in its grip, some in a greater share, some in a lesser, yet all alike.
17:152
And just as a fire falling upon a forest overturns and lays waste to everything, so also this madness has overturned the whole world.
17:153
Kings, rulers, private men, the poor, women, men, children—all alike are held fast by this evil.
17:154
As though a thick darkness were breathing over the world, no one comes to his senses.
17:155
But while accusations against covetousness are made by the thousands, both in private and in public, correction is nowhere to be found.
17:156
What then is to be done? How shall we quench the flame? For it is possible, even if it has been raised up to heaven itself.
17:157
We need only to will it, and we shall by all means prevail over the conflagration.
17:158
For just as it was made to grow by willing, so also by willing it shall be pulled down.
17:159
Was it not our own choice that made it? Then our choice will also be able to quench it.
17:160
But how shall the willing come to be? If we see its vanity and superfluousness—
17:161
看見它不能與我們一同去到那裡,因為它連在此處也撇下我們;
that it cannot depart together with us to that place, since even here it abandons us;
17:162
看見它自己留在這裡,唯有由它而來的創傷卻與我們一同離去;
that it itself remains here, but the wounds that come from it depart together with us;
17:163
當我們看見在那裡有極大的財富;
if we see that there is great wealth yonder;
17:164
當我們拿這財富與那財富相比,它就顯得比污泥還要卑賤;
if we compare this wealth to that, it will appear cheaper than mire;
17:165
當我們看見它帶著千萬的危險,它所給的乃是暫時的快樂,是攙雜著憂愁的快樂;
if we see that it has ten thousand dangers, that it offers a pleasure that is but for a season, a pleasure mingled with griefs;
17:166
當我們好好思量那永生的財富,就能藐視這地上的財富;
if we consider well that wealth of eternal life, so shall we be able to despise this;
17:167
當我們看見它對我們毫無益處——無論在榮耀上、在健康上、或在別的任何事上——反倒把我們沉入毀壞與滅亡之中;
if we see that it profits us in nothing—not toward glory, not toward health, not toward anything else—but on the contrary even plunges us into ruin and destruction;
17:168
if you learn that here you are rich and have many under you, but when you depart yonder you will go away destitute and naked.
17:169
If we chant these things to ourselves continually, and hear them from others also, perhaps there will be some healing, some deliverance from this grievous chastisement.
17:170
The pearl is beautiful? But consider that it is sea-water, that formerly it lay cast within its bosom.
17:171
Gold and silver are beautiful? But consider that they both were and are earth and ashes.
17:172
Silken garments are beautiful? But they are the weaving of worms.
17:173
It is human supposition and preconception; the beauty is not in the nature of the thing.
17:174
For those things that have their beauty in their very nature need no one to teach us of it.
17:175
但你若看見一枚銅錢單單鍍上金色,起先你就驚嘆,稱它為金子;
But you, if you see a bronze coin simply overlaid with gold color, first you marvel at it, calling it gold;
17:176
yet when those skilled in such matters teach you the deception, your wonder departs together with the deception.
17:177
你可看見它的美並不在於它的本質嗎?銀子也是如此;
Do you see that it does not have its beauty in its nature? Nor does silver either;
17:178
因為你若看見錫,就把它當作銀子而驚嘆,正如你把銅當作金子一樣;
for if you see tin, you marvel at it as silver, just as you did the bronze as gold;
17:179
and there is need of those who teach what one ought to marvel at.
17:180
Thus our eyes do not suffice us for discernment.
17:181
But flowers are not such; they are far better than those things.
17:182
你若看見玫瑰,就不需要有人教導;你自己就曉得分辨白頭翁與紫羅蘭;
If you see a rose, there is no need of those who teach; but of yourself you know how to distinguish the anemone and the violets;
17:183
so also lilies, and every flower.
17:184
So then, what takes place is nothing other than preconception.
17:185
And that this ruinous passion is a matter of preconception—come, tell me: if it seemed good to the king to enact by law that silver be more precious than gold, would you not have transferred your wonder and your affection? So everywhere we are subject to covetousness and to mere supposition.
17:186
又證明實情如此:金子之所以被看重,也是因它稀少,並非因它的本質;
And that it is so: gold is prized also for its rarity, but not by nature;
17:187
there are fruits cheap among us, but precious in the land of the Cappadocians; and again, others more costly than those precious among us are found in the land of the Seres, whence come these garments.
17:188
And in spice-bearing Arabia and India, where the precious stones are, one may find many such things.
17:189
可見這樣的事乃是成見,乃是人的臆測;
Thus such things are preconception, thus they are but human supposition;
17:190
and we do nothing by judgment, but simply and as it may chance.
17:191
所以讓我們終於從這醉態中清醒過來;
Let us then at last come to our senses out of this drunkenness;
17:192
let us see what is truly beautiful, what is beautiful by nature—godliness, righteousness—that
17:193
we may attain the good things that have been promised, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor to the Father, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
