但這命令的總歸就是愛,是從清潔的心、無虧的良心,並無偽的信心生出來的;
But the end of the commandment is love out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned;
2:2
from which some, having swerved, have turned aside unto vain talking, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
2:3
Nothing so ruins the race of men as to make light of friendship,
2:4
也沒有甚麼像不肯以極大的殷勤去正確持守友愛那樣敗壞人類;
and not to pursue it aright with much diligence;
2:5
just as, again, nothing so sets things right as to pursue it after with all one's strength.
2:6
And declaring this, Christ says, 'If two shall agree together, everything, whatsoever they shall ask, they shall receive;'
2:7
and again, 'When iniquity shall abound, love shall wax cold.'
2:8
This begat all the heresies.
2:9
For from not loving their own brethren they envied those who were held in good esteem; and from envying they became lovers of rule; and from loving rule they begat heresies.
2:10
For this reason also Paul, having said, 'That you might charge certain men not to teach other doctrine,' also sets forth the manner in which this may come to pass.
2:11
What then is this? Love.
2:12
Just as, therefore, when he says, 'Christ is the end of the law,' that is, its fulfilment, and this belongs to those things, so this commandment is contained in love.
2:13
所以,凡有健康之處,就不需要許多的醫治設備;
So that, where there is health, there is no need of much apparatus;
2:14
and where there is love, there is no need of much commandment.
2:15
But of what kind of love does he speak? Of the sincere, not that which reaches only as far as words, but that which comes from disposition, and mind, and fellow-feeling. 'Out of a pure heart,' he says.
2:16
He speaks either of an upright manner of life, or of genuine friendship.
2:17
因為不潔的生活也會產生分裂;
For an impure life also produces schisms;
2:18
for 'every one that does evil hates the light.'
2:19
因為連惡人中間也有情誼,例如強盜愛強盜,兇手愛兇手;
For there is a friendship even among the wicked; as robbers love robbers, and murderers love murderers;
2:20
but this is not from a good conscience, but from an evil one; nor out of a pure heart, but out of an impure one; nor of unfeigned faith, but of a counterfeit and hypocritical one.
2:21
因為信心彰顯出真理;
For faith shows forth the truth;
2:22
而愛乃是從真誠的信心生出來的;
and out of sincere faith is love begotten;
2:23
for he who truly believes in God can never endure to forsake this love.
2:24
'From which,' he says, 'some, having swerved, have turned aside unto vain talking.'
2:25
他說得好:「偏離了」(就是失了靶心);
Well did he say, 'Having swerved,' (having missed the mark);
2:26
for there is need of skill, so as to cast straight, and not beside the mark.
2:27
所以人必須被聖靈引導得直;
So that one must be guided straight by the Spirit;
2:28
因為有許多事物會叫人偏離那正直的道路;
for there are many things that turn one aside from the straight path;
2:29
'Desiring,' he says, 'to be teachers of the law.'
2:30
Do you see yet another cause, that of the love of rule? For this reason also Christ said, 'But be ye not called Rabbi;'
2:31
and again the Apostle: 'For neither do they themselves keep the law, but that they may glory in your flesh.'
2:32
'They aim at the dignity,' he says;
2:33
for this reason they do not look toward the truth.
2:34
'Understanding neither,' he says, 'what they say, nor whereof they affirm.'
2:35
Here he reproaches them as not knowing the aim of the law, nor the season up to which it behoved it to be lord.
2:36
那麼,若是出於無知,你怎麼還稱這為罪呢?因為他們落到這地步,不僅是因想要作律法的教師,也是因不持守愛;
How then, if it is out of ignorance, do you call this a sin? Because they suffered this not merely from wishing to be teachers of the law, but also from not holding fast to love;
2:37
and besides, the ignorance itself was begotten of these things.
2:38
因為當靈魂將自己交付給屬肉體的事務時,它辨識的能力就受了殘傷;
For when the soul gives itself over to fleshly matters, its faculty of discernment is maimed;
2:39
and having fallen away from love, it falls into contentiousness, and the eye of the understanding is maimed.
2:40
For he who is held fast by some desire of these transient things, being drunken with the passion, cannot become an incorruptible judge of the truth.
2:41
'They know not,' he says, 'whereof they affirm.'
2:42
For it was likely that they spoke about the law, and said much concerning purifications and the other bodily observances.
2:43
Then, leaving aside the reproving of those matters, as being nothing or but a shadow and outline of spiritual things—which would have been the gentler course—he does this instead.
2:44
What then is this? He praises the law, here calling 'law' the Decalogue.
2:45
And from this he cast out those other things also.
2:46
For if these very commandments punish transgressors, and become useless to us, much more do those others.
2:47
'But we know,' he says, 'that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully, knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man.'
2:48
'Good,' he says, and 'not good.'
2:49
有人問:「那麼怎樣呢?人若用得不合法,律法就不好了嗎?」即便如此,律法仍是好的;
'What then?' one says; 'if a man use it not lawfully, is it not good?' Even so, it is good;
2:50
只是他所指的是這意思;
but what he means is this;
2:51
就是說,當人藉着行為去成全律法時;
namely, when one fulfils it through works;
2:52
for the phrase, 'if a man use it lawfully,' is what signifies this here.
2:53
但當人用言語去講解律法,卻藉着行為去違犯它,這就是用得不合法;
But when men expound it by words, yet by their works transgress it, this is to use it unlawfully;
2:54
but not to one's own profit.
2:55
There is also another thing to be said besides this.
2:56
What then is this? Namely, if you use the law lawfully, it sends you on to Christ.
2:57
For when its aim is to justify the man, but it cannot do so, it sends him on to Him who is able.
2:58
And in yet another way it is possible to use the law lawfully, when you keep it out of much abundance.
2:59
「出於有餘」持守律法是甚麼意思呢?他說:正如那按規矩使用韁繩的,不是那騰躍的馬,也不是那咬嚼的馬,乃是那僅僅為體面而佩着韁繩的馬;
And what is it to keep it 'out of abundance'? Just as, he says, it is not the horse that prances, nor the one that bites, but the one that simply wears the bridle for form's sake, that uses it in orderly fashion;
2:60
so also he uses the law lawfully who lives soberly not because of the constraint arising from the letter.
2:61
And who will use it lawfully? He who knows that he has no need of it.
2:62
因為那在美德上長進到如此地步的人——他行義不是因懼怕律法,乃是因美德本身——這人就是合法而穩妥地使用律法;
For he who has advanced to such a height of virtue as to do right not through fear of it, but through virtue itself, this man uses it lawfully and safely;
2:63
if one uses it in such a way as not to fear it, but rather, though the punishment of the world to come lies before him, keeping the sense of self-condemnation before his eyes
2:64
And in another sense also he here calls 'righteous' the man who has succeeded in attaining virtue.
2:65
That man, then, uses the law rightly who does not think it worth his while to be schooled by it.
2:66
正如字母的筆劃是為孩童所設,但那不靠這些筆劃、而憑其他本領來補全字形的人,便是通曉更高學問之人,也更善於運用這些字母;
For just as the strokes of the letters are set out for children, but he who fills them out not from these strokes but from other resources would be a man versed in a greater knowledge, and uses the letters in a better way;
2:67
so likewise the man who is above the law is not held under tutelage by the law.
2:68
For he who fulfils it not out of fear but out of desire for virtue—this man above all fulfils it more perfectly.
2:69
因為那懼怕刑罰的人,與那嚮往尊榮的人,並非以同樣的方式遵行律法;
For he who dreads punishment does not fulfil the law in the same way as he who longs for honour;
2:70
the man who is under the law is not on the same footing as the man who is above the law.
2:71
For to live above the law—this is to use it lawfully. For that man uses the law well and keeps it, who accomplishes something greater than the law, who does not deign to have it as his taskmaster.
2:72
因為律法在大多數情形下,乃是對諸惡的禁令;
For the law, for the most part, is a prohibition of evils;
2:73
yet this does not make a man righteous, but the working of good things does.
2:74
所以,凡像奴僕那樣遠避諸惡的人,並未成全律法的宗旨;
Therefore all who abstain from evils as slaves do not fulfil its purpose;
2:75
for it was established for this reason: that it might punish transgression.
2:76
So then those men too use it, but in the fearing of punishment.
2:77
'For do you wish,' he says, 'not to fear the authority? Do what is good;'
2:78
因為律法只對作惡的人宣告刑罰;
for only against the wicked does it pronounce its punishments;
2:79
but to him who has done deeds worthy of crowns, of what use is the law? Just as the physician is of use to one who has some wound, not to the healthy, nor to one in good condition.
2:80
'But,' he says, 'for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners.'
2:81
He calls the Jews lawless, and the same men also unruly.
2:82
'The law,' he says, 'works wrath.'
2:83
This is directed at those who do evil.
2:84
But what has it to do with the man worthy of honour? 'Through the law,' he says, 'is the knowledge of sin.'
2:85
And what has it to do with the righteous man? 'For the righteous,' he says, 'the law is not laid down.'
2:86
Why so? Because he is beyond punishment, and because he does not wait to learn from it what must be done, having within him the grace of the Spirit that prompts him.
2:87
For the law was given that men might be chastened by fear and by threat.
2:88
There is no need, then, of a bridle for the well-broken horse, nor of tutelage for one who does not need a tutor.
2:89
'But,' he says, 'for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers.'
2:90
And he did not stop there, nor merely at the sins in general, but went through the sins according to their kinds, so as to shame men into submitting to the law's oversight.
2:91
Then, having enumerated them by kind, he spoke also by way of omission—and indeed, even the things already mentioned were sufficient to lead men away from evil.
2:92
那麼,他說這些話是指著誰呢?是指著猶太人;
Concerning whom, then, does he say these things? Concerning the Jews;
2:93
因為這些人既是弒父的,又是弒母的,並且他們自己也是褻瀆的、不聖潔的;
for these were both murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, and were themselves both profane and unholy;
2:94
for it is these he hints at when he says 'the ungodly and sinners.'
2:95
And since they were of this sort, the law too was of necessity given.
2:96
Εἰπὲ γάρ μοι, οὐχὶ συνεχῶς εἰδώλοις προσεκύνουν; οὐ τὸν Μωϋσέα ἐλίθαζον; οὐ φόνων αὐτῶν αἱ χεῖρες ἔγεμον συγγενικῶν;
For tell me: did they not continually bow down to idols? Did they not stone Moses? Were not their hands full of the blood of their own kinsmen?
2:97
Do not the prophets everywhere charge them with these things? But to those who philosophize about the things in heaven, these matters are superfluous.
2:98
'For murderers of fathers,' he says, 'and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, fornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine.'
2:99
Well did he say, 'to sound doctrine.'
2:100
For all those were passions of a soul that had been corrupted.
2:101
'According to the gospel,' he says, 'of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.'
2:102
所以,即使到如今,為要堅固福音,仍需要律法;
So then, even now, for the confirmation of the gospel there is need of the law;
2:103
yet for those who obey there is no need of it.
2:104
And he calls it the gospel of glory for no other reason than because of those who are ashamed at the persecutions and at the suffering of Christ.
2:105
因此,他既為那些別的緣故,也正為這些緣故,稱之為榮耀的福音,表明基督的受苦乃是榮耀;
So then, both for these other reasons and for these very ones, he called it the gospel of glory, showing that the suffering of Christ is glory;
2:106
or he also hints at the things to come.
2:107
因為即使現今的事滿了羞辱與辱罵,那將來的事卻並非如此;
For if the present things are full of shame and reproaches, yet the things to come are not such;
2:108
and the gospel is of things to come, not of things present.
2:109
那麼,天使怎麼說「看哪,我報給你們大喜的信息,因今日為你們生了救主」呢?因為祂雖已降生,卻是將要成就這事;
How then does the angel say, 'Behold, I bring you good tidings, that a Saviour has been born to you'? Because, having been born, He was about to accomplish this;
2:110
for He did not at the very moment He was born work the signs.
2:111
'According to the gospel,' he says, 'of the glory of the blessed God.'
2:112
他所指的,或是對神的敬拜,或是說:若一切現今之事都充滿祂的榮耀,那將來的事就更是如此了;
Either he means the worship of God, or that if all present things are filled with His glory, much more the things to come;
2:113
'when His enemies,' he says, 'shall be put under His feet;'
2:114
when there is nothing opposed, when the righteous behold all those blessed things which neither eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man.
2:115
'For I will,' He says, 'that where I am, these also may be, that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me.'
2:116
Let us learn, then, who these are, and let us call them blessed, considering how great the good things are that they will then enjoy, how great the glory they will share, how great the light.
2:117
因為此世的榮耀既微不足道,又不穩定;
For the glory here is a thing of no account and unstable;
2:118
縱使它能存留,也不過存留到死,此後便完全熄滅;
and even if it should endure, it endures until death, and thereafter is utterly extinguished;
2:119
'For his glory,' he says, 'shall not go down after him.'
2:120
並且對許多人而言,那榮耀在今世甚至也未能存留到底;
and for many it did not even endure to the end here;
2:121
but concerning that glory it is not possible to suspect anything of the kind, but altogether the contrary, that it abides, and will never have an end.
2:122
For such are the things of God: enduring, and superior to all change and to any end.
2:123
因為那時的榮耀不是從外在之物而來,乃是從內在而發;
For the glory then is not from things without, but from things within;
2:124
not from costly garments, not from a multitude of attendants, not from chariots does the glory then come, but apart from these things the man himself is clothed with the glory.
2:125
For now, if these things be absent, a man will be stripped of glory; but there it is not so.
2:126
At any rate, in the baths we see men stripped naked, both the honourable and the dishonourable, and we see the base as well.
2:127
無論如何,市場中許多人常因僕人為某事離開而陷於危險;
Many of those in the marketplaces, at all events, have often been in danger, when their servants had left them for some errand;
2:128
but there a man has his glory with himself everywhere.
2:129
正如天使無論在何處顯現,都在自己身上帶著榮耀,聖徒也是如此;
And just as the angels, wherever they appear, have their glory in themselves, so also do the saints;
2:130
or rather, just as the sun needs no garment, needs nothing else, but as soon as it appears it flashes forth its own glory, so also will it then be.
2:131
那麼,讓我們追求那榮耀,因為沒有甚麼比它更配得敬重;
Let us then pursue that glory, than which nothing is more worthy of reverence;
2:132
let us abandon this glory, than which nothing is more worthless.
2:133
'In the array of garments,' he says, 'do not glory.'
2:134
These things were foretold long ago to the childish.
2:135
For indeed the dancer, the harlot, and the stage-player are clothed more gracefully and more sumptuously than you.
2:136
And apart from these considerations, you glory over a thing which, once the moths fasten upon it, they rob you of its enjoyment.
2:137
你看見今生的榮耀是何等不穩固的事嗎?你所誇耀的東西,正是蟲子所生、所毀壞的;
Do you see how unstable a thing is the glory of the present life? You glory over a thing which worms breed and destroy;
2:138
for they say there are certain little creatures in India, whence these threads are made.
2:139
Acquire, if you will, that garment woven from above, the wondrous and radiant robe, the vesture that is truly interwoven with gold.
2:140
That gold is not from mines which the hands of condemned men have dug, but is begotten of virtue.
2:141
Let us clothe ourselves in that robe which is not fashioned by poor men and slaves, but by the Master Himself.
2:142
但你要說,這衣裳上撒了金子。這與你有什麼相干呢?因為眾人所稱讚的是那製作的人,而不是那穿戴的人;
But you will say that gold is sprinkled upon this garment. And what is that to you? For it is the maker whom all admire, not the wearer;
2:143
for the wonder truly belongs to him.
2:144
正如對於樸素的衣裳,我們所稱讚的不是漂布匠架起衣裳的那塊木架,而是那作工的人,儘管木頭承托著衣裳,衣裳也繫在木頭上;
For just as with plain garments we do not admire the frame on which the garment is stretched at the fuller's, but the workman, although the wood bears them and they are bound to the wood;
2:145
so, just as those things are not bound to it for its own sake, neither are these women adorned for their own sake, but for the sake of the garment—that it may be shaken out, he says, and not be consumed by the moth.
2:146
How then is this not the utmost folly—to take such great pains for the sake of nothing, to contrive every device, to betray one's own salvation, to despise hell, to insult God, and to overlook Christ when He is hungry? What should one say of the extravagance of perfumes—the Indian, the Arabian, the Persian?
2:147
the dry and the liquid, the myrrhs, the incenses—all of which involve much and senseless expense? Why do you perfume your body, O woman, when within it is full of uncleanness? Why do you lavish expense upon what is foul, and do the same as one who should pour perfume upon mire, or drench a brick with balsam? There is, if you will, a perfume, there is a fragrance with which you can anoint the soul—not from Arabia, nor from Ethiopia, nor from Persia, but borne from heaven itself, sold not for gold but for a good purpose and unfeigned faith.
2:148
去購買這香膏吧,它的香氣能充滿全世界;
Buy this perfume, whose fragrance can fill the whole world;
2:149
使徒們所散發的正是這香氣;
of this the apostles breathed forth the odor;
2:150
'For we are,' he says, 'a sweet savor of a good fragrance, to some unto death, but to others unto life.'
2:151
What then does this mean? That even a swine is said to be choked to death by fragrance.
2:152
And not the body only of the apostles, but even their garments breathed forth the spiritual perfume.
2:153
For so sweetly did the garments of Paul breathe that they drove out demons.
2:154
有什麼葉子、什麼桂皮、什麼沒藥,不是既比這香氣更馨甜、又更有益處呢?因為它若能趕逐鬼魔,還有什麼是它不能成就的?讓我們預備這香膏吧;
What leaf, what cassia, what myrrh is not both sweeter and more useful than this fragrance? For if it drove out demons, what else could it not accomplish? Let us prepare this perfume;
2:155
and the spiritual grace prepares it through almsgiving.
2:156
我們甚至在往那裏去以後,也要散發這香氣,並要使眾聖徒轉向我們;
Of this we shall breathe forth even when we have departed thither, and shall turn the saints toward ourselves;
2:157
and just as here those who are steeped in fragrances draw all people to themselves—whether he who breathes this forth goes into a bath-house, or into a church, or into some other crowded place, all cling to him and all turn toward him—
2:158
so also in that world, when the souls that breathe forth the spiritual fragrance enter in, all give place and yield before them.
2:159
在此世也是如此,鬼魔和一切邪惡都不敢靠近,也無法忍受它;
And here too both demons and all forms of wickedness dare not approach, nor can they endure it;
2:160
let us therefore put on that fragrance.
2:161
因為前者(屬世的香膏)使我們得著柔弱怠惰的名聲,後者卻使我們得著剛毅和真正令人驚奇的名聲;
For the one [worldly perfume] invests us with a reputation of effeminacy, but the other with one of manliness and of true wonder;
2:162
and it also affords us much boldness of speech.
2:163
這香氣不是地所出產的,乃是美德所生的;它不會枯萎,反而興旺茂盛;
This fragrance the earth does not yield up, but virtue begets it; it does not wither, but flourishes;
2:164
this makes precious those who possess it.
2:165
當我們受洗時,我們就是用這香膏受膏的;
With this we are anointed when we are baptized;
2:166
but that we should thereafter also breathe it forth belongs to our own diligence.
2:167
For this reason of old the priests were anointed with perfume, giving thereby a symbol of virtue, since a priest ought to breathe forth a sweet odor.
2:168
But there is nothing more foul-smelling than sin.
2:169
See how the prophet describes its nature.
2:170
'My wounds stink and are corrupt.'
2:171
For truly sin is worse than putrefaction and more foul-smelling.
2:172
For what, tell me, is more foul-smelling than fornication? And if you do not perceive it while committing it, consider for me what the sin is after the act is done, and then you will see its stench, then the uncleanness that clings to it, then the pollution, then the abomination.
2:173
Before it is committed it has a certain pleasure, but after it is accomplished the sweetness ceases and withers, while what is painful and gloomy remains.
2:174
但公義恰恰相反;
But righteousness is the opposite;
2:175
at the beginning it has its toils, but toward the end it has pleasure and rest.
2:176
在前一種情形中,快樂實在算不得快樂,因為有羞辱與刑罰的等候在前;
Nor, indeed, in the former case does pleasure become pleasure, because of the expectation of shame and of punishment;
2:177
and here again, in the latter case, neither is the toil a toil, because of the hope of the recompense.
2:178
What then of drunkenness, tell me? Does it not have its pleasure only in the drinking? Or rather, not even in the drinking.
2:179
For when a man falls into insensibility and sees none of those present, but is worse disposed than madmen, what pleasure is there any longer? Or rather, not even in fornication itself is there any pleasure.
2:180
For when the soul, held fast by passion, is deprived of its judgment, what pleasure is this? And if this be pleasure, then the itch of scabies is also pleasure.
2:181
But that I would call true pleasure, when the soul is not stretched taut in passion, torn asunder by the body.
2:182
For what pleasure is this—to grind the teeth, to distort the eyes, to be tickled and heated beyond what is fitting? And that this is not pleasure is shown by the fact that we hasten to be quickly rid of it, and once rid of it we feel pain.
2:183
If it is pleasure, do not be rid of it, but remain in the pleasure.
2:184
Do you see that it is a pleasure in name only? But the things with us are not such; they are truly sweet, not having their pleasure joined with fire, but leaving the soul free, and gladdening it and pouring it forth in joy.
2:185
Such was the pleasure of Paul when he said, 'In this I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice;'
2:186
and, 'Rejoice in the Lord always.'
2:187
因為前一種快樂既有羞辱又有定罪,又是暗中行的,且滿了無數的可厭之事;
For the former has both shame and condemnation; the former is done in secret, and is filled with countless disgusts;
2:188
but the latter is delivered from all these.
2:189
Let us therefore pursue this, that we may attain the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
