'If any man aspire to the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.'
10:2
'A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober-minded, orderly, hospitable, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but gentle, not a brawler, not covetous, one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity.'
10:3
他將要進入論到監督職分的話題,便一舉指明監督應當是何等樣的人,這並非作為單單對提摩太的勸勉,乃是向眾人陳明,並藉著他規範眾人;
Being about to enter upon his discourse concerning the office of a bishop, he shows once for all what manner of man the bishop ought to be, not framing this as an exhortation to Timothy in particular, but as discoursing to all, and through him regulating all;
10:4
他說了甚麼呢?「人若渴慕監督的職分」──他說,我並不責怪;
And what does he say? 'If any man aspire to the office of a bishop'—I find no fault, he says;
10:5
for it is a work of protective care.
10:6
人若懷有這樣的渴慕,以致所羨慕的不僅是那權柄與職權,乃是那牧養的看顧,我就不責怪他;
If any man has this desire, so as not to covet merely the rule and the authority, but the protective oversight, I find no fault;
10:7
'For he desireth a good work,' he says.
10:8
Since Moses also desired the thing, but not the authority, and so desired it that he heard:
10:9
「誰立你作我們的首領和審判官呢?」人若這樣渴慕,就讓他渴慕罷;
'Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?' If any man has so desired it, let him desire it;
10:10
for it is called 'oversight' (episcopê) from overseeing all.
10:11
'A bishop then,' he says, 'must be blameless, the husband of one wife.'
10:12
他說這話並不是立為律法,好像人非如此就不可作監督,乃是要禁止那過度的放縱;
He says this not as laying down a law, as though it were not permitted to become a bishop without this, but to restrain excess;
10:13
for among the Jews it was permitted both to enter into second marriages, and to have two wives at the same time; for marriage is honourable.
10:14
But some say that this was spoken to the intent that he should be the husband of one wife.
10:15
In saying 'blameless,' he comprehended every virtue.
10:16
So that if any man is conscious to himself of any sins, he does not do well
10:17
去羨慕那職分,因他已藉自己的行為把自己排除在外了;
in aspiring to a dignity from which he has by his deeds cast himself out;
10:18
for such a one ought not to rule, but to be ruled.
10:19
For the ruler ought to be brighter than any lamp, and to lead a life without stain, so that all may look to him, and shape their own life after his.
10:20
他這樣行,並非無故就用了這麼強烈的勸勉;
He does this, not without reason employing so great an exhortation;
10:21
but since he himself was about to appoint bishops—which he also enjoined when writing to Titus—and since it was likely that many would desire the office, for this cause he gives these charges.
10:22
'Vigilant,' he says—that is, clear-sighted, having countless eyes on every side, keen of vision, and not dulling the eye of the understanding.
10:23
因為臨到的事甚多,叫人不能看得清楚、也不能看清事情的真相;
For many are the things which befall, and which suffer not a man to see clearly and as matters really stand;
10:24
for despondencies and cares and a throng of affairs and many things flow in from every side.
10:25
所以他必須是警醒的,不單為自己的事操心,也要為眾人的事操心;
He must therefore be wakeful, taking thought not only for his own concerns, but also for those of the rest;
10:26
he must be roused up and fervent in spirit, and, so to speak, breathe fire, and, more than a general who goes about his army both by night and by day, toil and minister, and have care and anxiety on behalf of all.
10:27
'Sober-minded, orderly, hospitable.'
10:28
因為這些美德,多半受管治的人也具備(他們在這類事上原當與作首領的相等),保羅便指出監督所獨有的特點,加上一句「善於教導」;
Since these qualities most of the ruled also possess (for they too ought to be equal to their rulers in such things), showing what is peculiar to bishops, he added, 'apt to teach';
10:29
因為這一點不再是那受管治之人所被要求的;
for this is no longer required of the one who is ruled;
10:30
but this above all things must belong to him to whom this office has been entrusted.
10:31
He does not here mean the drunkard, but the insolent and self-willed man.
10:32
He does not mean the man who does not strike with his hands.
10:33
What then is meant by 'no striker'? Since there are some who unseasonably strike the conscience of the brethren, these, it seems to me, he here darkly hints at.
10:34
'Not greedy of filthy lucre, but gentle, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity.'
10:35
那麼,既然娶妻的人掛念世上的事,而作監督的又不當掛念世上的事,他怎麼說「作一個婦人的丈夫」呢?有些人的確說,他乃是隱指那不受妻子牽累而保持自由的人;
If then he that is married careth for the things of the world, and the bishop ought not to care for the things of the world, how does he say, 'the husband of one wife'? Some indeed say that he darkly signified the man who remains free from a wife;
10:36
but if this be not so, it is possible even for one who has a wife to be as though he had none.
10:37
For at that time he rightly conceded this, with regard to the nature of the matter as it then stood.
10:38
But it is possible to handle it well, if one so wills.
10:39
因為正如財富使人難以進入諸天的國,然而有許多富足的人也曾進去了;
For just as wealth makes it hard to enter into the kingdom of heaven, yet in many cases the wealthy have entered in;
10:40
But what are you saying, tell me? Discoursing concerning a bishop, he said that he ought not to be a drunkard, but hospitable, when he ought to have mentioned things greater than these.
10:41
For why did he not say, 'The bishop must be an angel, subject to no human passion' (those great things which Christ spoke, which even the ruled ought to have—to be crucified, and ever to hold their soul in their hands; which also Christ said, 'The good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep')?
10:42
And again: 'Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.' Yet he says instead, 'Not given to wine.' Fine hopes indeed, if it is about such matters that the bishop must be admonished!
10:43
For why did you not say, 'He ought already to have departed from the earth'? Instead, the very things you enjoined upon worldly men, these you do not enjoin upon the bishop.
10:44
And what did he say to those others? 'Put to death your members that are upon the earth.'
10:45
And again: 'He who has died is justified from sin.'
10:46
And again: 'Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh.'
10:47
And Christ again says, 'Whoever does not renounce all that he possesses is not worthy of me.'
10:48
Why then did he not say these things? Because it was possible to find but few of such a kind, whereas many bishops were needed, indeed men to preside in every city.
10:49
Since therefore the affairs of the Churches were about to be beset with snares, for this reason he named a moderate virtue, not that lofty and exalted one.
10:50
To be orderly and temperate was within the reach of many.
10:51
'Having his children,' he says, 'in subjection with all gravity.'
10:52
For the examples must be furnished from one's own household.
10:53
For who would believe that a man who has failed to bring his own son into subjection could bring a stranger into subjection? 'One who rules his own house well.'
10:54
This too is what those outside the faith affirm, that the good household manager would quickly become also a good statesman.
10:55
For indeed this is what the Church is, as it were a small household.
10:56
正如在家中有兒女、有妻子、有僕人,而丈夫在他們眾人之上執掌治理之權;
And just as in a household there are children, a wife, and servants, and over them all the husband has taken up the rule;
10:57
so too in the Church there is nothing other than this: children, women, servants.
10:58
And if he who presides over the Church has partners in his rule, well, there too the husband has the wife as his partner.
10:59
But here he must take thought for the sustenance of the widows and the virgins? There too the husband has the servants and the daughters.
10:60
And besides, it is even easier to rule a household.
10:61
He then who has not managed these matters well, how shall he be able to manage the affairs of the Church? Then, having said, 'If anyone does not know how to preside over his own household, how shall he take care of the Church of God?' he adds, 'Not a novice,' he says.
10:62
He does not here mean the young man, but the newly instructed convert.
10:63
For 'I planted,' he says, 'Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.'
10:64
Wishing therefore to indicate this man, he said this.
10:65
Otherwise, what hindered him from saying, 'not a young man'? For what reason, then, did he himself make Timothy, who was a young man, a bishop? And he bears witness to this, saying to him, 'Let no one despise your youth.'
10:66
這是因為他深知提摩太身上有極大的美德;
It was because he was conscious of the great virtue in him;
10:67
因他生活何等嚴謹;
because of his great strictness of life;
10:68
which indeed he knew, for he writes, 'From infancy you have known the sacred Writings.'
10:69
至於他也守著嚴格的禁食,這一點可從以下的話看出:『因你屢次患病,可以稍微用點酒』;
And that he also kept intense fasting is shown by the words, 'Use a little wine because of your frequent infirmities';
10:70
for he wrote to him about this along with the other matters, so that, had he not known these things to have been rightly accomplished by him, he would neither have written thus nor given such charges to his disciple. Since therefore many from among the Greeks were then coming forward and being baptized, he says: Do not straightway lead a novice into the dignity of office—that is, one newly instructed.
10:71
因為人若在尚未作門徒之先,就急速作了教師,便會陷入狂妄自大;
For if, before he becomes a disciple, one quickly becomes a teacher, he falls into arrogance;
10:72
if, before learning to be ruled, he becomes one of the rulers, he is puffed up.
10:73
『恐怕他自高自大,落在魔鬼所受的刑罰裡』;
'Lest, being lifted up with pride, he fall into the condemnation of the devil';
10:74
that is, into the same condemnation which that one endured because of his arrogance.
10:75
'Moreover he must have a good testimony from those outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.'
10:76
For he is bound to be reproached by them.
10:77
Perhaps it was for this reason too that he said, 'the husband of one wife,' although he says elsewhere, 'I wish that all men were as I myself am'—that is, in continence.
10:78
In order, therefore, that he might not confine the matter within too narrow bounds, if he were to demand a rigorously exact manner of life, for this reason he sought a moderate virtue.
10:79
因為每一座城都必須設立一位領袖;
For one to preside had to be appointed in every city;
10:80
for hear him writing to Titus, 'That you should appoint elders in every city, as I directed you.'
10:81
但若有人雖有好名聲和美好的聲譽,本身卻並非這樣的人,那又如何呢?誠然,這是難有的事;
But what if a man have good testimony and a good reputation, yet not be such a person? Certainly, this is difficult;
10:82
因為正直的人能在仇敵中間享有正直的聲譽,這已是難能可貴的了;
for it is a rare thing that upright men should have an upright reputation among their enemies;
10:83
然而如今他連這一點也不放過;
yet now he did not leave even this alone;
10:84
for he did not say, 'He must have testimony,' but 'He must also have testimony,' as this in addition to the rest.
10:85
但若有人無故惡言中傷他,出於嫉妒,尤其因他們是希臘人呢?這是不會發生的;
But what if men should speak evil of him without cause, out of envy, and especially since they are Greeks? This cannot be;
10:86
for even those men respect the one whose life is blameless.
10:87
How so, you ask? Hear him speaking about himself: 'Through evil report and good report.'
10:88
因為人所挑剔的並非使徒們的生活,乃是他們所傳的道;
For it was not their manner of life that men laid hold of, but their preaching;
10:89
for this reason he says, 'Through evil report.'
10:90
They were slandered as deceivers and impostors on account of the preaching.
10:91
And they did this because they could not lay hold of their manner of life.
10:92
For why did no one say of the apostles that they were fornicators, licentious, or covetous, but rather deceivers—which pertained only to the preaching? Was it not because their life was beyond reproach?
10:93
So then let us also live in this way, and no one will speak evil of us, though he be an enemy, though he be an unbeliever.
10:94
因為生活發出光輝的人,連在那些人眼中也是可敬的;
For he whose life shines brightly is worthy of reverence even in their eyes;
10:95
for the truth stops even the mouths of enemies.
10:96
But how does he fall into the snare? By often falling into the same sins as those men.
10:97
For if he be such a one, the devil quickly sets yet another snare for him, and those men quickly destroy him.
10:98
But if he must have testimony from his enemies, much more must he have it from his friends.
10:99
For that it is not possible for one who has led a blameless life to be evil spoken of, hear Christ saying:
10:100
'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.'
10:101
有人問:那麼,他若被人誣告,並因某種境遇而遭受毀謗呢?這也是可能的;
What then, one asks, if he be falsely accused, and endure calumny through some circumstance? This too is possible;
10:102
然而就連這樣的人也不當被推到眾人面前來擔任聖職;
yet neither should such a one be brought into the midst;
10:103
'It is needful, therefore,' he says, 'that he too should have a good testimony.'
10:104
所以,正如無人能說太陽是黑暗的,連瞎子自己也不能;
As therefore no one could call the sun dark, not even the blind man himself;
10:105
因為他羞於與眾人的看法相爭;
for he is ashamed to contend against the opinions of all;
10:106
照樣,也無人能指摘那極其良善的人;
so too no one could blame the man who is exceedingly good;
10:107
but on account of doctrines the Greeks would often slander them, while of an upright life they could lay no hold; rather, along with all the others, they too admire and are astonished.
10:108
So then let us live in such a way that the name of God may not be blasphemed.
10:109
Let us therefore neither look to human glory, nor so as to incur an evil reputation, but in either case let us honor the due measure.
10:110
'Among whom,' he says, 'you shine as luminaries in the world.'
10:111
For it was for this that He left us here: that we might be as luminaries, that we might be set as teachers of others, that we might become as leaven, that we might go about as angels among men, as grown men among little children, as spiritual among the natural, so that those others might be gained, that we might be as seed, that we might bear much fruit.
10:112
There would be no need of words, if our life were so radiant.
10:113
There would be no need of teachers, if we displayed works.
10:114
There would be no heathen at all, if we were Christians as we ought to be.
10:115
If we kept the commands of Christ, if when wronged we endured it, if when defrauded we bore it, if when reviled we blessed, if when ill-treated we returned kindness, no one would be so brutish as not to hasten to true religion, were these things done by us all.
10:116
And that you may learn this, Paul was but one man, and yet he drew so many after him.
10:117
If we were all such as he, how many worlds might we not draw to ourselves? Behold, the Christians are now more numerous than the heathen.
10:118
在其他各樣技藝中,一個人尚且能同時教導一百個孩童;
And in the other arts one man is able to teach a hundred children at once;
10:119
but here, though the teachers are more numerous, and the disciples far more numerous still, no one comes forward.
10:120
因為受教的人乃是注目於教師的德行;
For those who are being taught look to the virtue of their teachers;
10:121
and when they see that we too covet the same things, aim at the same objects—at ruling, at being honored—how shall they be able to admire Christianity? They behold lives open to reproach, and souls that are earthbound.
10:122
我們與他們一樣看重錢財——不,甚至遠遠過之;
We admire riches equally with them—nay, far more;
10:123
we shudder at death as they do, dread poverty as they do, are impatient under sickness as they do, are equally enamoured of glory and of power, wearing ourselves out for the love of money, and courting the times to our own advantage.
10:124
Whence then are they to be led to believe? From miracles? But these are no longer wrought.
10:125
From our manner of life? But that has been ruined.
10:126
From love? But not even a trace of it is anywhere to be seen.
10:127
For this reason we shall render account not only of our own sins, but also of the harm done to others.
10:128
Let us then at length recover our senses, let us watch, let us display a heavenly manner of life upon earth, let us say: 'Our citizenship is in heaven,' and let us exhibit our contest even upon the earth.
10:129
'But there have arisen among us great men,' one says.
10:130
'Whence am I to believe?' says the heathen; 'for I do not see you doing the same things as they did.'
10:131
'Since if we must relate such things, we too,' he says, 'have great philosophers and men wonderful for their lives.'
10:132
'But show me another Paul, another John!'
10:133
那麼,當我們如此議論時,他怎能不譏笑我們呢?他看見我們不是以行為、乃是以言語講論哲理,怎能容忍自己仍舊坐在無知之中呢?因為如今,為著一個小錢,各人都預備好既被殺、也殺人;
How then should he not laugh at us when we argue in this way? How should he endure to remain still in ignorance, when he sees us philosophizing not in works but in words? For now, for a single obol each man is ready both to be slain and to slay;
10:134
為著一杯泥土,你便設立千萬個公堂訴訟;
for a cup of earth you set up ten thousand law-courts;
10:135
for the death of a child you turn everything upside down.
10:136
For I pass over the other things worthy of much mourning, such as auguries, and omens, and observances of days, and casting of nativities, and tokens, and amulets, and divinations, and incantations, and sorceries.
10:137
Truly these are great sins, and sufficient to call forth the wrath of God, that even after He has sent His own Son, we dare such things.
10:138
那麼還能說甚麼呢?無非是說,我們必須哀哭;
What then is to be said? Nothing else, but that we must mourn;
10:139
for only a small fraction of the world is hardly being saved.
10:140
But those who are perishing rejoice when they hear it, as though they alone were not enduring this, but along with many others.
10:141
And of what sort is this joy of theirs? For of that very joy also they shall pay the penalty.
10:142
For do not think, as it is here, that to be sharers in calamity brings consolation; it is not so there also.
10:143
Whence is this clear? I will make it manifest.
10:144
倘若有人被命定要被火焚燒,隨後又看見自己的孩子與他一同被焚燒,並聞到從那肉體升起的焦臭氣味,他豈不要因悲痛而死麼?他必定會的;
If someone were commanded to be burned, and then were to see his own child being burned together with him, and the savour rising up from the flesh, would he not die of grief? Assuredly he would;
10:145
for if those who are not suffering, when they see these things happening, grow numb and faint, much more will those who are themselves being tormented feel this.
10:146
For hear a certain wise man saying: 'You too have been taken, even as we, and are reckoned among us.'
10:147
For human nature has in it somehow a fellow-feeling, and we are broken down by the calamities of others.
10:148
那麼你告訴我:作父親的看見自己的兒子與他同受一樣的刑罰,他所得的是安慰呢,還是苦楚的加增呢?作丈夫的看著妻子又如何?一個人看著另一個人又如何?我們豈不是那時更加心碎麼?有人說:「是的」;
Tell me, then: will the father who sees his son lying under the same punishment receive consolation, or an addition to his miseries? And what of the husband beholding his wife? What of one human being beholding another? Are we not then all the more broken down? 'Yes,' one says;
10:149
'but there those sufferings do not exist.' I too know this, but... not to hasten to true religion, were these things done by all.
10:150
And that you may learn this, Paul was but one man, and yet he drew so many after him.
10:151
If we were all such as he, how many worlds might we not draw to ourselves? Behold, the Christians are now more numerous than the heathen.
10:152
在其他各樣技藝中,一個人尚且能同時教導一百個孩童;
And in the other arts one man is able to teach a hundred children at once;
10:153
but here, though the teachers are more numerous, and the disciples far more numerous still, no one comes forward.
10:154
因為受教的人乃是注目於教師的德行;
For those who are being taught look to the virtue of their teachers;
10:155
and when they see that we too covet the same things, aim at the same objects—at ruling, at being honored—how shall they be able to admire Christianity? They behold lives open to reproach, and souls that are earthbound.
10:156
我們與他們一樣看重錢財——不,甚至遠遠過之;
We admire riches equally with them—nay, far more;
10:157
we shudder at death as they do, dread poverty as they do, are impatient under sickness as they do, are equally enamoured of glory and of power, wearing ourselves out for the love of money, and courting the times to our own advantage.
10:158
Whence then are they to be led to believe? From miracles? But these are no longer wrought.
10:159
From our manner of life? But that has been ruined.
10:160
From love? But not even a trace of it is anywhere to be seen.
10:161
For this reason we shall render account not only of our own sins, but also of the harm done to others.
10:162
Let us then at length recover our senses, let us watch, let us display a heavenly manner of life upon earth, let us say: 'Our citizenship is in heaven,' and let us exhibit our contest even upon the earth.
10:163
'But there have arisen among us great men,' one says.
10:164
'Whence am I to believe?' says the heathen; 'for I do not see you doing the same things as they did.'
10:165
'Since if we must relate such things, we too,' he says, 'have great philosophers, and men admirable for their life.'
10:166
'But show me another Paul, another John!'
10:167
那麼,當我們如此議論時,他怎能不譏笑我們呢?他看見我們不是以行為、乃是以言語講論哲理,怎能容忍自己仍舊坐在無知之中呢?因為如今,為著一個小錢,各人都預備好既被殺、也殺人;
How then should he not laugh at us when we argue in this way? How should he endure to remain still in ignorance, when he sees us philosophizing not in works but in words? For now, for a single obol each man is ready both to be slain and to slay;
10:168
為著一杯泥土,你便設立千萬個公堂訴訟;
for a cup of earth you set up ten thousand law-courts;
10:169
for the death of a child you turn everything upside down.
10:170
For I pass over the other things worthy of much mourning, such as auguries, and omens, and observances of days, and casting of nativities, and tokens, and amulets, and divinations, and incantations, and sorceries.
10:171
Truly these are great sins, and sufficient to call forth the wrath of God, that even after He has sent His own Son, we dare such things.
10:172
那麼還能說甚麼呢?無非是說,我們必須哀哭;
What then is to be said? Nothing else, but that we must mourn;
10:173
for only a small fraction of the world is hardly being saved.
10:174
But those who are perishing rejoice when they hear it, as though they alone were not enduring this, but along with many others.
10:175
And of what sort is this joy of theirs? For of that very joy also they shall pay the penalty.
10:176
For do not think, as it is here, that to be sharers in calamity brings consolation; it is not so there also.
10:177
Whence is this clear? I will make it manifest.
10:178
倘若有人被命定要被火焚燒,隨後又看見自己的孩子與他一同被焚燒,並聞到從那肉體升起的焦臭氣味,他豈不要因悲痛而死麼?他必定會的;
If someone were commanded to be burned, and then were to see his own child being burned together with him, and the savour rising up from the flesh, would he not die of grief? Assuredly he would;
10:179
for if those who are not suffering, when they see these things happening, grow numb and faint, much more will those who are themselves being tormented feel this.
10:180
For hear a certain wise man saying: 'You too have been taken, even as we, and are reckoned among us.'
10:181
For human nature has in it somehow a fellow-feeling, and we are broken down by the calamities of others.
10:182
那麼請告訴我:當父親看見自己的兒子受著同樣的刑罰時,他所得到的是安慰呢,還是苦楚的加增?丈夫看見妻子又如何?一個人看見另一個人又如何?我們豈不是那時更加被壓碎麼?有人說:「是的」;
Tell me, then: when a father sees his son subjected to the very same punishment, does he receive any comfort, or rather an increase of his sufferings? And what of a husband seeing his wife? What of one man seeing another? Are we not then all the more crushed? 'Yes,' someone says;
10:183
「可是在那裡不會有這些苦楚。」這我也曉得,然而在那裡卻有別的、遠更嚴酷的苦楚;
'but there those sufferings will not exist.' I too know that; yet others far more grievous will be there;
10:184
for the weeping there will then be beyond all comfort, when all behold one another, when all are smitten with grief.
10:185
Those who are in famine—tell me—do they receive any comfort for their own miseries from the fellowship of others? And what, when a child, or a father, and a wife, and grandchildren pay the same penalty? What, when we see our friends—do we then have comfort? There is none, none at all; rather our sufferings are the more intensified for us.
10:186
And apart from these, there are evils which admit of no comfort from what is common to all, because of their very grievousness.
10:187
Suppose someone lies in fire, and again another likewise:
10:188
他們怎能彼此安慰呢?我求你告訴我:我們若曾患過劇烈的高熱,一切安慰的憑藉豈不都離我們而去了麼?這也是理所當然的;
how shall they comfort one another? Tell me, I beseech you: if ever we have been in a violent fever, did not all means of comfort fail us? And with good reason;
10:189
for when sufferings prevail, the soul no longer has leisure to be comforted.
10:190
Or do you not see the women who have lost their husbands—how many other women who have suffered the same they can reckon up? Yet their grief is in no way lessened by this.
10:191
Let us not, then, feed ourselves on this hope; but let us find the one comfort—to repent of our sins, and to hold fast to the good way that leads to heaven, that we may attain the kingdom of the heavens, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour to the Father, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
