Ἡ Ἔφεσος ἔστι μὲν τῆς Ἀσίας μητρόπολις·

以弗所是亞細亞的首府。

Ephesus is the metropolis of Asia.

0:2

ἐτελεῖτο δὲ τῇ Ἀρτέμιδι, καὶ μάλιστα ταύτην ἐκεῖ ἔσεβον ὡς μείζονα δῆθεν θεόν·

那城獻給亞底米，人們在那裡尤其敬拜她，彷彿她是某位更大的神明。

It was dedicated to Artemis, and it was she above all whom they worshipped there, as though she were some greater deity.

καὶ τοσαύτῃ δεισιδαιμονίᾳ οἱ ταύτην τιμῶντες ἐκέχρηντο, ὡς μηδὲ τοὔνομα τοῦ τὸν ναὸν αὐτῆς ἐμπρήσαντος ποιῆσαι φανερόν·

那些尊崇她的人陷入極深的迷信，以致他們連那放火焚燒她廟宇之人的名字，也不肯公開。

And those who honoured her were possessed by so great a superstition that they would not even make known the name of the man who had set fire to her temple.

Καὶ ὁ μακάριος δὲ Ἰωάννης ὁ εὐαγγελιστὴς τὰ πολλὰ ἐνδιέτριψεν ἐκεῖ·

蒙福的使徒約翰，那傳福音者，也大半時間居住在那裡；

The blessed John the Evangelist also spent much of his time there;

καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἐξωρίσθη ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἐτελεύτησε

因為他也是在那裡被流放，並在那裡辭世。

for there too he was exiled, and there he ended his life.

Καὶ τὸν Τιμόθεον δὲ ἐκεῖ κατέλιπεν ὁ Παῦλος, καθὼς γράφων πρὸς αὐτὸν, φησί·

保羅也把提摩太留在那裡，正如他寫信給他時所說：

And there too Paul left Timothy, just as he says in writing to him:

Καθὼς παρεκάλεσά σε προσμεῖναι ἐν Ἐφέσῳ

「我曾勸你仍住在以弗所。」

'As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus.'

Καὶ τῶν φιλοσόφων οἱ πολλοὶ, καὶ μάλιστα οἱ ἀνθήσαντες περὶ τὴν Ἀσίαν, ἦσαν ἐκεῖ

眾多哲學家，尤其是那些在亞細亞一帶興盛的，都在那裡。

And most of the philosophers, and especially those who flourished throughout Asia, were there.

Λέγεται δὲ καὶ Πυθαγόρας ἐκεῖθεν εἶναι·

據說畢達哥拉斯也是出自那一帶；

Pythagoras too is said to have come from those parts;

0:10

καὶ γὰρ ἡ Σάμος, ὅθεν ἦν, Ἰωνική ἐστι νῆσος

因為他所出自的薩摩斯，乃是一座愛奧尼亞的島嶼。

for Samos, from which he came, is an Ionian island.

Τοὺς δὲ περὶ Παρμενίδην καὶ Ζήνωνα καὶ Δημόκριτον, καὶ. πολλοὺς ἔτι καὶ νῦν εὕροι τις ἂν φιλοσόφους ἐκεῖ

甚至如今，人仍可在那裡找到巴門尼德、芝諾與德謨克利特一派的人，以及許多其他的哲學家。

And even now one might find there the school of Parmenides and Zeno and Democritus, and still many other philosophers.

Ταῦτα δὲ ἡμῖν οὐχ ἁπλῶς εἴρηται, ἀλλ' ὥστε δεῖξαι, ὅτι πολλῆς ἔδει τῷ Παύλῳ σπουδῆς πρὸς ἐκείνους γράφοντι

我們說這些話並非隨意而發，乃是為要表明：保羅在寫信給那些人時，需要付上極大的殷勤。

These things have not been said by us at random, but in order to show that Paul needed much diligence in writing to those people.

Λέγεται δὲ καὶ τὰ βαθύτερα τῶν νοημάτων αὐτοῖς ἐμπιστεῦσαι, ἅτε ἤδη κατηχημένοις

據說他把那些較深奧的思想託付給他們，因為他們已經受過教導。

And he is said to have entrusted to them the deeper of his thoughts, seeing that they were already instructed in the faith.

Ἔστι δὲ νοημάτων μεστὴ ἡ Ἐπιστολὴ ὑψηλῶν, καὶ δογμάτων

這封書信滿載崇高的思想與教義。

The Epistle is full of lofty thoughts and doctrines.

0:15

Γράφει δὲ τὴν Ἐπιστολὴν ἀπὸ Ῥώμης δεδεμένος, καθὼς καὶ αὐτός φησι·

他是在羅馬被囚時寫這封書信的，正如他自己也說：

He writes the Epistle from Rome, being in bonds, as he himself also says:

Προσεύχεσθε ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ, ἵνα μοι δοθῇ λόγος ἐν ἀνοίξει τοῦ στόματός μου ἐν παῤῥησίᾳ γνωρίσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου, ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ πρεσβεύω ἐν ἁλύσει

「也要為我祈求，使我得著口才，能以放膽開口，把福音的奧祕講明。我為這福音的緣故，作了帶鎖鏈的使者。」

'Pray for me, that utterance may be given unto me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.'

Καὶ ὑψηλῶν σφόδρα γέμει τῶν νοημάτων καὶ ὑπερόγκων

這書信充滿了極其崇高而厚重的思想。

And it is exceedingly filled with lofty and weighty thoughts.

0:18

Ἃ γὰρ μηδαμοῦ σχεδὸν ἐφθέγξατο, ταῦτα ἐνταῦθα δηλοῖ, ὡς ὅταν λέγῃ·

因為那些他在別處幾乎從未言及的事，在這裡他都表明了，就如他所說：

For things which he has hardly uttered anywhere else, these he sets forth here, as when he says:

Ἵνα γνωρισθῇ νῦν ταῖς ἀρχαῖς καὶ ταῖς ἐξουσίαις ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις διὰ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας ἡ πολυποίκιλος σοφία τοῦ Θεοῦ·

「為要藉著教會，使天上執政的、掌權的，現在得知神百般的智慧」；

'That now unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places might be made known through the Church the manifold wisdom of God';

0:20

καὶ πάλιν, Συνήγειρε καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἡμᾶς ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις·

又說：「祂叫我們與基督一同復活，一同坐在天上」；

and again, 'He raised us up together, and made us to sit together in the heavenly places';

καὶ, Ὃ ἑτέραις γενεαῖς οὐκ ἐγνωρίσθη, νῦν ἀπεκαλύφθη τοῖς ἀποστόλοις τοῖς ἁγίοις αὐτοῦ καὶ προφήταις ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι, εἶναι τὰ ἔθνη συγκληρονόμα καὶ σύσσωμα καὶ συμμέτοχα τῆς κληρονομίας αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ

又說：「這奧祕在別的世代沒有叫人知道，如今藉著聖靈啟示給祂的聖使徒和先知，就是外邦人在基督裡，藉著福音，得以同為後嗣，同為一體，同蒙祂的應許。」

and, 'Which in other generations was not made known, but hath now been revealed unto His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit, that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of His inheritance in Christ.'
