'I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness of mind and meekness.'
8:2
作教師的本分,乃是不從所治理的人求尊榮、不求虛名,而是求他們的救恩,並為此行盡諸事;
It belongs to teachers to seek virtue, not honor, nor glory from those under their rule, but their salvation, and to do all things for the sake of this;
8:3
since he who seeks that other thing would be no teacher, but a tyrant.
8:4
For God did not set you over them for this reason, that you should enjoy the greater attendance, but that your own interests should be neglected, and all their interests should be built up.
8:5
Such was the blessed Paul, who was freed from all conceit, and was so disposed as to be one of the many, or rather even the least of them.
8:6
For this reason he even calls himself their servant, and utters the greater part of his words in the manner of a suppliant.
8:7
Observe, at any rate, that even now he writes nothing commanding, nothing authoritative, but in a restrained and submissive manner.
8:8
'I therefore beseech you,' he says, 'the prisoner in the Lord, to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called.'
8:9
What do you beseech, tell me? That you yourself may obtain something? 'By no means,' he says, 'but that I may save others.'
8:10
And yet those who beseech, beseech on behalf of things that pertain to themselves. 'And this pertains to me too,' he says, just as, writing in another place, he also said:
8:11
'Now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.'
8:12
For he ever earnestly longed for the salvation of those he was teaching.
8:13
A great dignity and a fervent one, greater than kingdom and consulship and all things.
8:14
'As Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner in Christ.'
8:15
For nothing is so splendid as a bond for Christ's sake, as those chains that lay upon those holy hands.
8:16
More splendid than to be an apostle, than to be a teacher,
8:17
than to be an evangelist—more splendid than this is to be a prisoner for Christ's sake.
8:18
若有人愛基督,就明白這所說的;
If anyone loves Christ, he understands what is being said;
8:19
if anyone is mad with love and set aflame for the Master, he knows the power of these bonds.
8:20
Such a one would choose to be a prisoner for Christ's sake rather than to dwell in the heavens.
8:21
He showed his hands to them as more splendid than all gold, than any royal diadem.
8:22
For a fillet set with jewels laid about the head does not make it so splendid as an iron chain worn for Christ's sake.
8:23
In those days the prison was more splendid than royal palaces.
8:24
Why do I speak of royal palaces? Rather, more splendid than heaven itself.
8:25
If anyone loves Christ, he knows this dignity, he knows this virtue, he knows how great a gift it was to the race of men to be bound for His sake.
8:26
Perhaps this is more splendid than to sit at His right hand; this is more honorable than to sit upon twelve thrones—to be bound for His sake.
8:27
And why do I speak of human things? I am ashamed to compare wealth and golden ornament with bonds.
8:28
But leaving aside speaking of those great things, even if the matter had no reward at all, this alone is a great reward, this a sufficient recompense—to suffer these dread things for the sake of the one who is loved.
8:29
Those who love know what is being said—even if not God, yet men whom they love—those who take more delight in suffering evil than in being honored by the ones they love.
8:30
It belongs to the holy choir alone to perceive these things—I mean the choir of the apostles.
8:31
For listen to the blessed Luke, who says
8:32
that 'They departed rejoicing from the presence of the council, because they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Christ.'
8:33
在其餘的人看來,這似乎是可笑之事:受辱竟算為配得的、受辱竟成了喜樂之事;
Now to the rest it seems a matter for laughter, if to be dishonored is to be counted worthy, if to be dishonored is to rejoice;
8:34
but to those who understand the longing for Christ, this has been reckoned more blessed than all things.
8:35
若有人要將整個天堂賜給我,或將那鎖鏈賜給我,我必寧取那鎖鏈;
If someone were to grant me the whole heaven, or that chain, I would prefer that chain;
8:36
若有人要使我與眾天使一同居於上界,或與被捆鎖的保羅同在,我必揀選那監牢;
if someone were to set me on high with the angels, or with Paul in his bonds, I would choose the prison;
8:37
if someone were to make me one of those powers that are about heaven, that are about the throne, or such a prisoner as this, I would choose to become such a prisoner.
8:38
Nothing is more blessed than that chain.
8:39
我巴不得如今能置身於那些地方;
I could wish to be in those places now;
8:40
因為據說那些捆鎖至今仍存留;
for the bonds are said to remain even yet;
8:41
並要親眼看見、稱奇那些人對基督的渴慕;
and to see and marvel at those men for their longing after Christ;
8:42
I could wish to see the chains, which demons indeed dread and shudder at, but which angels reverence.
8:43
There is nothing better than to suffer some evil for Christ's sake.
8:44
I do not count Paul so blessed because he was caught up into paradise, as because he was cast into prison.
8:45
我稱他為有福,並非因他聽見了說不出來的話語,而是因他忍受了鎖鏈;
I do not count him so blessed because he heard unspeakable words, as because he endured the chains;
8:46
I do not count him so blessed because he was caught up into the third heaven, as I count him blessed on account of the chains.
8:47
That these things are indeed greater than those, hear how he himself knows it.
8:48
For he did not say, 'I, who heard unspeakable words, exhort you,' but what? 'I, the prisoner in the Lord, exhort you.'
8:49
他若不在每一封書信中都加上這話,也不足為奇;
And if he does not add this to all his epistles, it is no wonder;
8:50
for he was not always in bonds, but only at certain times.
8:51
I would rather suffer evil for Christ than be honored by Christ.
8:52
This is great honor, this is glory that surpasses all things.
8:53
If He who became a servant for my sake, and emptied Himself of His glory, did not so count Himself to be in glory as when He was crucified for me, why ought I not to suffer? For hear Him saying:
8:54
你說什麼?你要與強盜和盜墓者一同被帶上十字架,要承受被咒詛之人的死,要被人吐唾沫、被人掌摑——你竟稱這些為榮耀嗎?祂說:「是的;
What do you say? You are led to the cross with robbers and grave-plunderers, You are to undergo the death of the accursed, You are about to be spat upon and buffeted—and do You call these things glory? 'Yes,' He says;
8:55
'for I suffer these things for those whom I love, and even now I count them as glory.'
8:56
If He who loved the wretched and miserable calls this thing glory, and not being seated on the Father's throne, nor being in glory, but being in dishonor was glory, and He preferred this to that,
8:57
much more ought I to count these things as glory.
8:58
O blessed chains! O blessed hands, which that fetter adorned!
8:59
The hands of Paul were not so precious when they raised up and lifted the lame man at Lystra, as when they were girded about with the chains.
8:60
我若生在那個時代,我必要更加擁抱它們,把它們貼在我的眼睛上;
If I had lived in those times, I would then above all have embraced them, and pressed them to my very eyes;
8:61
I would not have ceased kissing those hands which were counted worthy to be bound for the sake of my Master.
8:62
當那毒蛇咬住保羅的手,卻絲毫不能傷害他時,你希奇嗎?不要希奇;
Do you marvel at Paul, when the viper fastened on his hand and did him no harm? Marvel not;
8:63
for even the whole sea reverenced this man.
8:64
若有人如今讓我能使死人復活,我也不揀選這個,倒揀選那鎖鏈;
If someone gave me now to raise the dead, I would not choose this, but rather the chain;
8:65
if I were free from the cares of the churches, and had a body in health, I would not refuse to make so long a journey merely to see the chains, and the prison where he was bound.
8:66
And yet many signs of his miracles are found everywhere, but they are not so much to be longed for as those of his scars.
8:67
And in the Scriptures too, he does not so much gladden me when working miracles, as when he suffers evil, is scourged, is dragged about.
8:68
從他身上取來的手帕和圍裙,行了奇事,確實奇妙;
Truly wonderful are the handkerchiefs and aprons from his body that wrought marvels;
8:69
but they are not such as those.
8:70
'Having beaten them,' it says, 'and laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison;'
8:71
and again, 'Being bound, they sang praises to God;'
8:72
and again, 'Having stoned him, they dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.'
8:73
Do you wish to learn how great a thing is an iron chain worn about a servant's body for Christ's sake? Hear Christ Himself saying, 'Blessed are you.'
8:74
何時呢?當你們使死人復活時嗎?不是;
When? When you raise the dead? No;
8:75
那麼是什麼呢?當你們醫好瞎眼的人時嗎?絕不是;
but what? When you heal the blind? By no means;
8:76
but what? 'When men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil word against you falsely, for My sake.'
8:77
But if to be evil spoken of makes men so blessed, what would suffering evil not have wrought? Hear this blessed man saying elsewhere:
8:78
'Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.'
8:79
But brighter than this crown is the chain.
8:80
'He will count me worthy of this,' he says, 'and I make no exact reckoning about those things.'
8:81
It suffices me, as full recompense, to suffer evil for Christ's sake.
8:82
Let him grant me to utter that word: 'I fill up in my flesh what is lacking of the afflictions of Christ,' and I need nothing more.
8:83
彼得也被算為配得這鎖鏈;
Peter also was counted worthy of this chain;
8:84
經上說:「他被捆綁,交給兵丁看守,竟睡著了。」他這樣歡喜,毫無痛苦,甚至能睡著;
'For he was,' it says, 'bound, and delivered to soldiers, and was sleeping.' So did he rejoice, and felt no pain, as even to sleep;
8:85
and deep sleep would not have held him, had he been in great anxiety.
8:86
他在兵丁當中睡著了;
He slept while he was in the midst of the soldiers;
8:87
and an angel came to him, and smote him on the side, and raised him up.
8:88
If then someone said to me, 'Which would you have wished to be—the angel who nudged Peter, or Peter who was delivered?'—I would have chosen to become Peter, on whose account the angel also came.
8:89
May I have the joy of those chains!
8:90
有人問:他既如此,怎麼還像脫離大禍的人一樣祈求呢?不要希奇;
And how is it, one asks, that he prays as one delivered from great evils? Marvel not;
8:91
for he prays because he fears lest he die.
8:92
And he feared to die because he still wished his life to be the occasion of his sufferings.
8:93
Hear then the blessed Paul himself, what he says: 'To depart and to be with Christ is far better, but to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.'
8:94
This too he called grace, when he wrote:
8:95
'For it has been granted to you as a gift,' he says, 'on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake.'
8:96
如此,這事比那事更大;
So that this is greater than that;
8:97
這確實是最大的恩典,比一切都更大——比叫日頭和月亮停住、比震動世界都更大;
truly it is the greatest grace, and greater than all these—than to make the sun and moon stand still, than to move the world;
8:98
this is greater than to have power over demons, or to drive out demons.
8:99
因為那些鬼魔被我們裡面的信心趕逐時所受的痛苦,還不如牠們看見我們為基督的緣故受苦、被捆綁時那樣厲害;
For those demons do not so much grieve when driven out by the faith that is in us, as when they see us suffering some evil for Christ's sake, and being bound;
8:100
for this makes our boldness the greater.
8:101
為基督被捆綁之所以為美,並不是因為這事能換得國度,乃是因為它是為基督而作的;
It is not on this account good to be bound for Christ, because the thing procures a kingdom, but because it is done for Christ;
8:102
I do not count the bonds blessed because they usher one into heaven, but because they are for the Master of heaven.
8:103
知道自己是為基督被捆綁,是何等的誇耀啊!何等的喜樂,何等的尊榮,何等的光輝!我願意常常述說這些事;
How great a boast it is to know that one was bound for Christ! How great the delight, how great the honor, how great the splendor! I could wish to utter these things continually;
8:104
我願意緊緊握住那鎖鏈;
I could wish to cling to the chain;
8:105
I could wish, even though I am deprived of the reality, at least in word to put the chain about my soul through my disposition.
8:106
'The prison was shaken,' it says, 'while Paul was bound, and the bonds of all were loosed.'
8:107
你看見捆鎖的本性反倒鬆開了捆鎖嗎?正如主的死將死置於死地,照樣保羅的捆鎖也釋放了被囚的人,震動了監牢,開了眾門;
Do you see the nature of bonds loosing bonds? For as the death of the Lord put death to death, so also the bonds of Paul loosed the bound, shook the prison, opened the doors;
8:108
and yet this is not the nature of bonds, but the contrary—to hold the bound man in security, not to open the walls for him.
8:109
But this is not the nature of bonds simply; yet of bonds for Christ's sake this is the nature.
8:110
The jailer fell down before Paul and Silas.
8:111
But neither is this what bonds simply do—to bring those who bound them to the feet of the bound, but the contrary, to make these subject to those.
8:112
But now he who was loosed was at the feet of the bound.
8:113
The one who had bound him was begging that the one he had bound might be released from his fear.
8:114
Was it not you who bound him? Tell me. Did you not cast him into the inner prison? Did you not make his feet fast in the stocks? Why then do you tremble? Why are you in an uproar? Why do you weep? Why have you drawn your sword? 'I bound no such man,' he says.
8:115
I did not know that so great was the power of the prisoners of Christ.
8:116
What are you saying? They received authority to open the heavens, and were they not to open a prison? They loosed those bound by demons, and was iron to prevail against them? You do not know these men.
8:117
For this reason you also obtained pardon.
8:118
It is Paul who was bound, before whom all the angels stood in awe.
8:119
It is Paul, whose very handkerchiefs and aprons drove out demons and put diseases to flight; and yet the bond laid on him by the demon was far harder than iron, and more unbreakable.
8:120
For the one binds the soul, while the other binds the body.
8:121
He then who looses souls that are bound, would he not have been able to loose his own body? He who bursts asunder the bonds of demons, could he not have loosed a fastening of iron? He who through his garments looses those prisoners and delivers them from the demons, could he not by himself have loosed himself? For this reason he was first bound, and then loosed those who were bound, that you might learn that the servants of Christ, even when bound, have far greater strength than those who are free.
8:122
If he had done this while free, it would not have been so wonderful.
8:123
So that the bond was a sign not of weakness, but of greater power.
8:124
For thus the strength of the saint is shown all the more brilliantly, when even bound he prevails over those who are free, when the one who is bound looses not only himself but also those who are bound.
8:125
What use are the walls? What was gained by casting him into the inner prison, seeing that he opened even the outer one? And why did it happen at night, and with an earthquake? Grant me a little, and permit me, while refraining from the apostolic words, yet reveling in the apostolic deeds, to feast upon the chain of Paul.
8:126
Allow me to dwell upon it yet longer.
8:127
I have laid hold of the bond, and no one shall tear me away.
8:128
More securely am I now bound by longing than he was then by the stocks.
8:129
No one looses this bond.
8:130
For it springs from longing for Christ.
8:131
This neither the angels nor the kingdom of heaven has power to loose.
8:132
One may hear Paul himself saying: Neither angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth shall be able to separate us from the love of Christ.
8:133
For what reason then did the event take place in the middle of the night? For what reason also with an earthquake? Hear the dispensation of God, and marvel.
8:134
The bonds of all were loosed, and the doors were opened.
8:135
But this happened solely for the sake of the jailer, not for display, but for salvation.
8:136
For that the prisoners did not know they had been loosed is clear from the voice of Paul.
8:137
For what does he say? He cried out with a loud voice, saying:
8:138
Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.
8:139
But they would not all have been within, had they seen the doors opened and themselves loosed.
8:140
For those who cut through walls, and climb over roofs and parapets, and dare all things,
8:141
daring even in their chains, would not have endured, when the bonds were loosed and the doors opened, to remain within, and that too while the jailer himself was asleep.
8:142
But instead of iron bonds, the bond of sleep was upon them.
8:143
For this reason it was so ordered, that both the event might take place, and yet no harm from the miracle might befall the jailer who was destined to be saved.
8:144
And in another way too, prisoners are for the most part bound at night, not by day.
8:145
With great diligence, then, was it arranged that they should be seen bound again, and asleep.
8:146
But if these things had happened by day, there would have been much tumult.
8:147
那麼監房又為何被震動呢?為要叫那禁卒起來,觀看所發生的事;
For what reason then was the building also shaken? So that the jailer might rise up to behold what had taken place;
8:148
for he alone was worthy of salvation.
8:149
But behold, I pray you, the surpassing greatness of the grace of Christ.
8:150
For it is good, in the midst of Paul's bonds, to make mention also of the grace of Christ; or rather, these very things too are of the grace of God.
8:151
有些人竟因那禁卒得救而加以指責,並且從那些本該叫他們希奇神慈愛的事上反倒挑剔;
There are some who bring an accusation, because the jailer was saved, and for the very things for which they ought to have marveled at the loving-kindness of God, from these they find fault;
8:152
For such are the weak, who even find fault with the food that nourishes them, which they ought to admire, and say that honey is bitter.
8:153
And those whose sight is dim are darkened by the very thing from which they ought to have been enlightened; this happening not through the nature of the things themselves, but through the weakness of those who are unable to use them for their proper end.
8:154
What then were they saying? Whereas they ought to have marveled that He took hold of this man who had fallen into the uttermost wickedness, and made him better, they say:
8:155
他怎麼沒有以為這事是行邪術、玩弄詭計,反倒去拿住他們、大聲喧嚷呢?有許多緣由促成此事;
For how was it that he did not think the thing to be sorcery and trickery, and rather seize them and raise a loud outcry? Many things contributed to this;
8:156
首先,因為他聽見他們歌頌讚美神;
first, because he heard them singing hymns to God;
8:157
而行邪術的人斷不會唱這樣的讚美詩;
and sorcerers would not sing such hymns;
8:158
For he heard them, it says, singing hymns to God.
8:159
其次,因為他們自己並沒有逃跑,反倒攔阻他自刎;
Secondly, because they themselves did not flee, but even prevented him from slaying himself;
8:160
and had they done it for their own sakes, they would not have remained within, but would first have delivered themselves.
8:161
他們的慈愛也是何等的大;
Great too was their loving-kindness;
8:162
they prevented him from slaying himself, the very man who had bound them, all but saying to him:
8:163
With great security did you make us fast, casting us into the inner prison, and did you bind us bitterly, that you yourself might be loosed from the most bitter of bonds.
8:164
For with the cords of his own sins is each one bound fast.
8:165
For those bonds are accursed, but these are blessed, and worthy of much prayer.
8:166
For that these bonds loose those others, he showed from things perceptible to the senses.
8:167
Have you seen those bound with iron loosed? You shall see yourself too set free from other, grievous bonds.
8:168
These bonds—I mean those of the prisoners, not those of Paul—those bonds of sin make.
8:169
Doubly were those within prisoners, and the jailer himself was also a prisoner.
8:170
For they were bound with iron and with sins, but he with sins alone.
8:171
保羅釋放那些人,是為叫這人得著十足的確信;
Paul loosed those men for the full assurance of this man;
8:172
for indeed the bonds were visible.
8:173
Thus too did Christ do, or rather in the reverse order.
8:174
And what was this? That of sins, and that of the body.
8:175
What then does He do? Be of good cheer, He says, child, your sins are forgiven.
8:176
First He loosed the paralysis that was truly such, and then He comes to this one.
8:177
For when certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes, Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said:
8:178
Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Rise up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins—He says to the paralytic:
8:179
Rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.
8:180
He confirmed the spiritual by the perceptible, working that which pertains to the soul by means of that which pertains to the body.
8:181
And why did He do this? That what was spoken might be fulfilled:
8:182
You wicked servant, out of your own mouth will I judge you.
8:183
But what of those men? 'No one can forgive sins, save God alone.'
8:184
Therefore it is no angel, nor archangel, nor any other created power that can do so.
8:185
What then ought He to have said? 'If I be shown to forgive sins, it is plain that I am God.'
8:186
But He did not speak thus. Rather, what did He say? 'That you may know that
8:187
the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins' — then He says to the paralytic, 'Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.'
8:188
'When therefore,' He says, 'I have wrought the more difficult thing, it is plain that no pretext nor gainsaying is left concerning the easier.'
8:189
因這緣故,祂先行了那屬心思(不可見)的事,因為那時反對祂的人甚多;
For this reason He first did the intelligible thing, since there were many that gainsaid Him;
8:190
but here He led it from the intelligible to the perceptible.
8:191
So then, this faith was no light matter.
8:192
他看見了那些囚犯,卻既沒有看見,也沒有聽見任何卑劣的事;
He saw the prisoners, and he neither saw nor heard anything base;
8:193
他看見這事並非藉著邪術而成;
he saw that nothing had come about by sorcery;
8:194
他看見這一切都是出於極大的仁慈而成的;
he saw that everything had happened out of much loving-kindness;
8:195
for they did not avenge themselves upon him, though they were able.
8:196
他們本可以救出自己,連同那些被捆的人,一同離去;
For it was possible for them, freeing both themselves and those who were bound, to depart;
8:197
or if not those who were bound, at least themselves.
8:198
But they did not do this.
8:199
So that it was not from the miracle alone, but also from their manner of conduct, that they put him to shame.
8:200
How did Paul cry out? Saying with a loud voice, 'Do yourself no harm;'
8:201
You see both his freedom from vainglory, his lack of arrogance, and his tender affection.
8:202
He did not say, 'These things have happened on our account;'
8:203
反倒像是那囚犯中的一個,這樣說;
but, as though he were one of the prisoners, he says;
8:204
And yet, even if not before this, nor through the miracle had they freed themselves — though it was possible for them to keep silence and let all go free, even those bound —
8:205
For if they had kept silent, and had not by the loud cry stayed his hands, he would have driven the sword through his throat.
8:206
For this reason too Paul cried out, since the man had been cast into the inner prison.
8:207
'You have done this against yourself,' he says, 'in casting further within those who were about to deliver you from the danger.'
8:208
But they did not imitate the things done by him.
8:209
And had he died, they all would have escaped.
8:210
You see that they chose rather to remain bound than to overlook him perishing.
8:211
For this reason he also pondered within himself: 'If they were sorcerers, they would certainly have loosed those men and freed themselves from their bonds;'
8:212
for it was likely that many such men also had been cast in.
8:213
And besides, having often received sorcerers, and seeing nothing of the sort come to pass, he marveled.
8:214
A sorcerer would not have shaken the foundations so as to awaken the keeper of the prison, and to make his own escape the more difficult.
8:215
But let us now behold the faith of the jailer.
8:216
'Having called,' it says, 'for lights, he sprang in, and being trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas, and having brought them out, he said:'
8:217
'Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?' Fire and sword were pressing upon him, and he was saying:
8:218
'Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?' And they said:
8:219
'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, you and your house.'
8:220
'This,' he says, 'is not the way of sorcerers, to deliver such a teaching;'
8:221
nowhere here is there any mention of a demon.
8:222
你看那人何等配得拯救?他既看見那神蹟,又脫離了懼怕,卻沒有忘記那於己有益的事,反倒在如此大的危難中,仍顧念自己靈魂的救恩,並且照著人當如何就近夫子的樣式,前來就近他們;
You see how worthy that man was to be saved? For having seen the miracle, and being freed from fear, he did not forget the things that profit him, but even in so great a danger he was concerned about the salvation of his soul, and he came to them as one ought to come to teachers;
8:223
and he fell down at their feet.
8:224
'And they spoke to him,' it says, 'the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.'
8:225
'And taking them that same night, he washed their stripes, and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.'
8:226
You see the fervor of the man? He did not defer, he did not say, 'Let day come, let us see, let us consider;'
8:227
反倒滿有熱切,他和他全家都受了浸;
but with great fervor both he and all his household were baptized;
8:228
not as now the greater part neglect their servants and wives and children who remain uninitiated.
8:229
我懇求你們,要效法那禁卒;
Become, I beseech you, like the jailer;
8:230
I speak not of the rank, but of the purpose of will.
8:231
For what profit is there in rank, when the purpose of will is weak? Wonder of wonders! The savage, the harsh man, who lived amid a thousand evils, who ever practiced this cruelty — how suddenly he became so loving to men, so full of care!
8:232
'He washed them,' it says, 'from their stripes.'
8:233
你再看保羅的熱切;
Behold again also the fervor of Paul;
8:234
bound, scourged, he thus preached the good news.
8:235
O blessed chain! What travail-pains it travailed during that night!
8:236
And concerning these it is possible to say, 'Whom I have begotten in my bonds.'
8:237
You see how he exults, and desires that the children born of this should be more illustrious? You see how great is the abundance of glory!
8:238
of the bonds, seeing that they make illustrious not only him who wears them, but also those who were begotten by him at that time? Have those begotten in Paul's bonds anything more — I speak not concerning grace, for the grace is the same, nor concerning remission, for the remission of all is the same, but that from the very outset they are trained to rejoice and exult in such things.
8:239
'At that very hour of the night,' it says, 'taking them, he washed them from their stripes, and was baptized.'
8:240
如今你再看那果子;
And behold now also the fruit;
8:241
he immediately gave back the fleshly things in return.
8:242
Having brought them up into his house, he immediately set a table before them, and he rejoiced with all his household, having believed in God.
8:243
For why should he not, seeing that heaven had been opened to him through the opening of the prison doors? He washed his teacher, set a table, and rejoiced greatly.
8:244
Paul's chain entered into the prison, and made everything there into a church, and made all men into the body of Christ, and set up the spiritual table, and brought forth travail-pains over which angels rejoice.
8:245
Was it then in vain that I said the prison was more radiant than heaven? For this was the cause of the joy there.
8:246
For if over one sinner that repents there is joy in heaven, if where two are gathered together in His name, there Christ is in the midst of them — where Silas and Paul and the jailer and his whole household and so great a faith are found, how much more? Behold the vehemence of the faith.
8:247
But this prison has reminded me of another prison.
8:248
Which one, then? That in which Peter was.
8:249
但在那裡並沒有這樣的事發生;
But no such thing happened there;
8:250
反倒是他被交給四班兵丁看守,他既不歌唱讚美,也不警醒守望,乃是睡著了;
rather, he had been delivered to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him, and he neither sang hymns nor kept watch, but was sleeping;
8:251
and he had not been scourged, yet the danger was greater.
8:252
因為在此處一切都已成就,他們也已受了刑罰;
For here everything had already been wrought, and they had already paid the penalty;
8:253
So that, even if it was not the pangs of suffering, yet the very expectation of what was to come threw him into confusion.
8:254
'Behold,' it says, 'an angel of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the cell';
8:255
and smiting Peter on the side, he raised him up, saying:
8:256
'And immediately the chains fell off from his hands.'
8:257
So that he might not suppose the matter to be one of the light only, he also pricked Peter.
8:258
But no one saw the light, only he himself alone; and he thought that it was a vision.
8:259
In this way those who are asleep do not perceive the benefits of God.
8:260
'And the angel,' it says, 'said to him:'
8:261
'Gird yourself, and bind on your sandals.'
8:262
'And he says to him, Cast your garment about you, and follow me.'
8:263
'And going out, he followed him; and he did not know that what was being done through the angel was real.'
8:264
'And when they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them of its own accord.'
8:265
'And going in, they went forward through one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.'
8:266
Why did that not happen here which happened in the case of Paul and Silas? Because there they were about to release them;
8:267
for this reason he was not willing that they should be released in that manner.
8:268
But in the case of the blessed Peter, they were about to lead him out to death.
8:269
What then? Would it not, one asks, have been far more wonderful for him, after he had been led out and delivered into the hands of the king, then to be snatched from the very midst of the dangers and to suffer nothing? For thus not even the soldiers would have perished.
8:270
A great question is here raised.
8:271
有人說:神救了自己的僕人,卻使別人受刑、別人喪亡嗎?那麼我們該怎麼說呢?首先,這並非以別人的喪亡為代價;
God, one says, saved His own servant with the punishment of others, with the destruction of others? What then shall we say? First, then, that it was not with the destruction of others;
8:272
second, that this came about not from the ordering of the matter itself, but from the bitterness of the judge.
8:273
怎麼說呢?神如此安排,不但要這些人不至喪亡,連那人也要得救——正如此處在禁卒的事上一樣;
How? God so ordered it that not only these should not perish, but that even that man should be saved—just as here also in the case of the jailer;
8:274
but that man did not use the gift as he ought.
8:275
'And when day came,' it says, 'there was no small stir among the soldiers, as to what then had become of Peter.'
8:276
Then what? Herod makes an inquiry into the matter, and having examined them, commanded that they be led away.
8:277
因為他若未曾審問,或許還有些辯解的餘地;
For if he had not examined them, there might have been some excuse;
8:278
but as it was, he set them before him, examined them, learned that he had been bound, that the
8:279
牢獄曾被牢牢看守,守衛曾站在門前;
prison had been made secure, that the guards were before the doors;
8:280
no wall had been broken through, no door had been opened, no other sign of foul play.
8:281
他本該從這些事上驚歎神的大能,那大能竟從危險的正中把彼得奪出來;
He ought from these things to have marveled at the power of God, which even snatched him from the midst of the dangers;
8:282
and to have worshipped Him who was able to do such great things.
8:283
那麼在此處神怎會是罪魁呢?因為神若使牆被撕裂而如此把他帶出,或許人就會以為這事是出於守衛的疏忽;
How then is God here the cause? For if He had caused the wall to be torn open, and had thus brought him out, perhaps the matter would have been thought to be due to their negligence;
8:284
但神若如此安排,為要顯明這事並非出於人為的作惡,乃是出於神的奇妙作為,那麼他為何要這樣行呢?因為彼得若真要逃跑,他必照著原樣、帶著鎖鏈就逃了;
but if He so ordered it as to show that the matter was not one of human wrongdoing, but of divine wonder-working, why then did He do this? For if he were going to flee, he would have fled just as he was, with the chains upon him;
8:285
if he were going to flee in confusion, he would not have taken such forethought as even to take his sandals, but would have left them.
8:286
But as it is, for this reason the angel says to him, 'Bind on your sandals';
8:287
so that they might learn that he did the thing not as one fleeing, but with much ease and leisure.
8:288
For being bound, and remaining between the two soldiers, he could not have found so much leisure as even to loose the chains, and that too while he himself was in the inner prison.
8:289
So that the punishment of the guards came about through the injustice of the judge.
8:290
For why did the Jews not do this? For I remember also another prison—that former one at Rome, and this at Caesarea, and now this at Jerusalem.
8:291
因為祭司長和法利賽人,從他們差往牢獄去要提彼得出來的人那裡聽見說:「我們發現裡面一個人也沒有,門卻是關著的,守衛也站在門前」;
For when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard from those who had been sent by them to the prison to bring out Peter, that 'We found no one within, but also the doors shut, and the guards standing before the doors';
8:292
why did they not put the guards to death, but were perplexed concerning them, saying, 'What could this be?' But if these men, though most eager for their death, conceived no such thing, much more you who do all things for their favor.
8:293
For this reason judgment overtook him swiftly.
8:294
但你若提出這樣的控訴,就也該為那些在道路上被殺害的人提出控訴,並為那無數被不義殺害的人,還有為在基督之時被殺的嬰孩提出控訴;
But if you bring this charge, bring it also concerning those who are slaughtered on the highways, and concerning the countless others who are unjustly slain, and further concerning the children who were killed in the time of Christ;
8:295
因為照你所說,基督也成了他們喪命的緣由;
for to them also, as you say, Christ became the cause;
8:296
or rather, not Christ, but the madness and tyranny of Herod's father.
8:297
But if you say, Why did He not snatch him out of the hands of Herod? He was able to do this also, but nothing would have been gained from it.
8:298
基督究竟多少次從他們的手中脫身而出呢?這對那些忘恩負義的人又有何益處呢?然而在此處,所發生的事卻使信徒大得益處;
How many times, indeed, did Christ go out from the midst of their hands? What then did this profit the thankless ones? Here, however, much benefit accrues to the faithful from what took place;
8:299
for since records were made, and their very enemies bore witness to the things that were done, the testimony was above suspicion.
8:300
As therefore in that case they were silenced from no other source, but from the fact that those who came confessed the things that had happened, so also here.
8:301
For why did the jailer do no such thing? And yet Herod's affairs were in no way less than his.
8:302
因為就令人驚駭而論,得知那被捆綁的人在門仍關著時出去了,這與看見門被打開相比,絲毫不遜色;
For as regards the account of astonishment, to have learned that the bound man went out while the doors were shut is no less than to have seen the doors opened;
8:303
and yet these things might rather have seemed to be an illusion, but the other no longer so, being reported with exactness.
8:304
So that if this man too had been so wicked, he would have slaughtered Paul, just as that other slaughtered the soldiers.
8:305
But if, to those who ask why God permitted even the children to be slain, we should wish to make a defense, we should perhaps fall into a longer discourse, which ought to have been spoken to you at the outset. For now, having given much thanks for the chain of Paul, let us bring the discourse to a close—since it has become to us the cause of so many good things—exhorting you not only not to be vexed if you suffer anything for Christ's sake, but even to rejoice as the apostles did, and to boast as Paul said:
8:306
'Most gladly will I boast in my weaknesses.'
8:307
For on this account also he heard, 'My grace is sufficient for you.'
8:308
Paul boasts in bonds, and do you pride yourself greatly on wealth? The apostles rejoiced because they were counted worthy to be scourged, and do you seek ease and luxury? How then do you wish to attain the same things as they, while journeying in the opposite direction to them
8:309
here? 'And now, behold,' he says, 'I go to Jerusalem bound in the spirit, not knowing the things that shall befall me there, except that the Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.'
8:310
Why then do you go away, if bonds and afflictions await you? For this very reason, he says, that I may be bound for Christ's sake, that I may die for Him.
8:311
'For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die, for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
8:312
Nothing is more blessed than that soul.
8:313
In what does he boast? In bonds, in afflictions, in the chain, in brand-marks.
8:314
他說:「我身上帶著主耶穌基督的烙印」——彷彿那是一座偉大的勝利記號;他又說:「我為以色列的緣故,被這鎖鏈捆綁著」;
'I,' he says, 'bear in my body the brand-marks of the Lord Jesus Christ'—as though it were some great trophy; and again, 'For the sake of Israel,' he says, 'I am compassed with this chain';
8:315
and again, 'For which I am an ambassador in a chain.'
8:316
這是什麼意思呢?你不覺得羞恥嗎?你身為囚犯周遊天下,不感到畏懼嗎?你不怕有人因此譴責你的神為軟弱嗎?不怕有人因此不肯來就近他嗎?他說:我的捆鎖並非如此;
What is this? Are you not ashamed? Do you not dread going about the world as a prisoner? Are you not afraid lest anyone condemn your God for weakness? Lest anyone on this account refuse to come to Him? Not such, he says, are my bonds;
8:317
it knows how to shine even in royal palaces.
8:318
'So that my bonds,' he says, 'have become manifest in the whole praetorium, and the greater number of the brethren, being confident in the Lord through my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.' Do you see the strength of bonds—greater than the resurrection of the dead? They saw me bound, and they are the more emboldened.
8:319
因為哪裡有捆鎖,哪裡就必有大事發生;
For where there are bonds, there too something great must come to pass;
8:320
where there is affliction, there without fail is also salvation, there without fail is relief, there without fail are great achievements.
8:321
因為魔鬼一踢蹬,就正被擊打;
For the devil, when he kicks, then is he smitten;
8:322
when he binds the servants of God, then most of all does the word increase.
8:323
And behold this happening everywhere.
8:324
He was bound, and even in the prison he wrought these things.
8:325
For 'in my very bonds,' he says.
8:326
他在羅馬被捆鎖,卻吸引了更多的人歸向自己;
He was bound in Rome, and drew yet more to himself;
8:327
for he alone did not take courage, but many others also through him.
8:328
他在耶路撒冷被捆鎖,然而雖然被綁著,他在公開申辯時卻使王驚駭,也叫官長心生懼怕;
He was bound in Jerusalem, and bound though he was, as he pleaded his cause he confounded the king and struck the ruler with fear;
8:329
for 'having become afraid,' it says, he released him; and he who had bound him was not ashamed to learn from the one he had bound about things to come.
8:330
Bound, he sailed, and undid a shipwreck, and put the storm itself in bonds.
8:331
While he was in bonds, that beast fastened upon him, yet fell off having done no harm.
8:332
He was bound in Rome, and bound as he was, by pleading his cause he drew countless multitudes, putting forward this very thing in place of everything else, I mean the chain.
8:333
But it is not possible to be bound with a chain now.
8:334
Yet there is another chain, if we are willing.
8:335
What then is this? To master one's hand, not to be ready for greed.
8:336
With this chain let us bind ourselves.
8:337
Instead of iron, let the fear of God be to us.
8:338
Let us loose those who are bound by poverty, by affliction.
8:339
打開監獄的門,與釋放一個被囚禁的靈魂,這兩件事並不相同;
It is not the same thing to open the doors of a prison and to release a soul that is shut up;
8:340
it is not the same thing to loose the bonds of bound prisoners and to set free those who are crushed, in remission.
8:341
這件事比那件更大;
This is greater than that;
8:342
for on the former no reward is laid up, but on the latter countless rewards.
8:343
保羅的鎖鏈已經很長了,也已長久地牽住了我們;
Long has Paul's chain been, and for long it has held us fast;
8:344
and indeed it is truly long, and more beautiful than any golden chain.
8:345
這鎖鏈如同用某種器械,把被捆綁的人拉向天上,又像一條從高處垂下的金鏈,把他們拉升到天上去;
This chain draws those who are bound, as by some engine, toward heaven, and, like a golden chain let down from on high, it draws them up to heaven itself;
8:346
and what is truly wondrous, being bound below, it draws those who are bound upward.
8:347
然而這並非事物的常理;
And yet this is not the nature of things;
8:348
but when God orders it, seek not the nature of things nor their sequence, but the things that are above nature and sequence.
8:349
Let us learn neither to fall down in afflictions, nor to be vexed.
8:350
For behold this blessed man:
8:351
他曾被鞭打,而且被重重地鞭打;
he had been scourged, and scourged severely;
8:352
因為經上說:「打了他們許多棍」;
for 'having laid many stripes upon them,' it says;
8:353
他又被捆鎖,這也是嚴嚴地捆鎖;
and he was bound, and this too again severely;
8:354
for he cast him into the inner prison, and with greater security.
8:355
And being in such straits, at midnight, when even those who are most wakeful are sleeping, with another and harsher bond, that of sleep, pressing upon them, they sang and praised the Lord.
8:356
還有甚麼比這些靈魂更堅如金剛石呢?我想到那三個少年人也曾在火中、在窯裡歌唱;
What could be more adamantine than these souls? I bethought me that the youths too sang in the fire and in the furnace;
8:357
perhaps they reasoned that 'We
8:358
have not yet suffered any such thing.'
8:359
But the discourse, doing well, has carried us off again to other bonds and another prison.
8:360
What shall I do? I wish to be silent, but I cannot.
8:361
I have found another prison far more wondrous and astounding than that one.
8:362
But rouse yourselves for me, as though the discourse were only now beginning, and draw near with minds at their keenest.
8:363
I wish to break off the discourse, and it does not suffer me.
8:364
因為正如一個正在飲酒的人,無論有人應許他甚麼,也不肯中途停下;
For just as one drinking in the midst could not endure to break off, however much anyone might promise him,
8:365
so I too, having laid hold of the wondrous cup of the prison of those bound for Christ's sake, cannot cease, cannot be silent.
8:366
因為他既在監獄裡、在黑夜中都不沉默,連在鞭打之下也不沉默,難道我坐在這裡,在白晝之中,帶著滿滿的安逸講說,論到那些被捆綁的、被鞭打的、在深夜卻不因此屈服的人,倒要沉默嗎?那三個少年人在窯裡、在火中都不沉默;
For if he in the prison and in the night was not silent, nor amid scourgings, shall I be silent, sitting in the daytime, speaking with much ease, about those who were bound, who were scourged, who in the middle of the night did not thus suffer? The youths were not silent in the furnace and in the fire;
8:367
and shall we not be ashamed to be silent? Let us then look at this prison also.
8:368
They were bound here too, but straightway and from the very outset it was shown that they were not to be burned, but rather to enter as into a prison.
8:369
因為你為何要捆綁那些將要被火焰吞滅的人呢?他們像保羅一樣,手腳都被捆綁;
For why do you bind those who are about to be consumed by flame? They were bound, like Paul, both feet and hands;
8:370
they were bound with such great fury.
8:371
For the one cast Paul into the inner prison, and this one commanded that the furnace be heated exceedingly hot.
8:372
But let us see the things that followed.
8:373
當那些人歌唱讚美時,監獄震動,眾門都開了;
As those men were singing hymns, the prison was shaken, and the doors were opened;
8:374
當這些少年人歌唱讚美時,他們手腳的鎖鏈都鬆開了;
and as these were singing hymns, the bonds both of their feet and of their hands were loosed;
8:375
監獄開了,窯的門也開了;
the prison was opened, and the doors of the furnace were opened;
8:376
for a dew of the Spirit was blowing through.
8:377
然而仍有許多事湧向我;
But nevertheless many things flow around me;
8:378
I do not know which to speak first, and which second.
8:379
因此我懇求你們,不要有人向我要求次序;
Therefore I beseech you, let no one demand order of me;
8:380
for great is the kinship of these matters.
8:381
與保羅同被捆鎖的人得了釋放,然而他們卻仍在睡覺;
Those bound together with them were loosed, and yet they went on sleeping;
8:382
but here, instead of this, something else happened:
8:383
those who had cast them in were burned up.
8:384
但正如我想說的,王看見他們得了釋放,就俯伏在他們面前;
But, as I was wishing to say, the king saw them loosed, and fell down before them;
8:385
he heard them singing hymns, and saw four walking about, and called them.
8:386
Therefore, just as Paul did not go out, though he was able, until the one who had cast him in called him and led him out, so neither did the three youths go out until the one who had cast them in commanded them to come forth.
8:387
What are we taught by this? Not to hasten amid the trials brought upon us, nor to be impatient in afflictions, nor again, when men would loose us, to remain.
8:388
但這禁卒卻俯伏下拜了;
But this one fell down;
8:389
因為他確實能夠進入眾聖徒所在之處;
for indeed he was able to enter where the saints were;
8:390
但那尼布甲尼撒來到門前就站住了;
but that one, coming to the door, stood still;
8:391
for he did not dare to draw near to the prison within, which he had prepared for them by means of the fire.
8:392
This one says, 'Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?' That one, not indeed with such humility, yet sent forth a voice no less sweet: 'Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither.'
8:393
'Servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither.'
8:394
How were they to come forth, O king? You cast them bound into the fire; so long a time did they linger in the fire. For even had they been of adamant, even had they been of metallic substance, and were reciting that entire hymn, would they not have perished? For this very reason, then, they were saved—because they were singing praise.
8:395
The fire stood in awe of their zeal; it stood in awe also of that marvellous song and of the hymns.
8:396
How does he call them? Anticipating this, he said, 'The servants of the Most High God.'
8:397
For to the servants of God all things are possible.
8:398
For if there are those who are servants of men, and even in the affairs of those men they are no less strong and prevail and give commands, how much more the servants of God!
8:399
He called them by the sweetest name.
8:400
He knew that by this above all he was flattering them.
8:401
For if it was in order to remain servants of God that they entered the fire, there was for them no other utterance sweeter than this.
8:402
Not if he had called them kings, not if he had called them lords of the whole world, would he so have gladdened them as when he said, 'The servants of the Most High God.'
8:403
And why do you marvel? For to the great city, that which rules the world and prides itself on its dignities, Paul assigned this as of equal weight in worth—nay rather, as far greater,
8:404
yea, greater and incomparably greater than the consulship and the kingship and the rule of the whole world, did Paul set this, writing:
8:405
'Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ.'
8:406
'The servants of the Most High God.'
8:407
'For if,' he says, 'they make so great an effort to be servants, by this above all we shall persuade them.'
8:408
See then also the piety of the youths.
8:409
They were not vexed, nor angered, nor did they gainsay, but they came forth.
8:410
For if they had regarded the matter—being cast into the furnace—as a punishment, they would have felt aggrieved at the one who cast them in.
8:411
But as it was, there was nothing of the kind; rather, as though issuing forth from heaven itself, so did they come forth.
8:412
And what the prophet says concerning the sun, that 'as a bridegroom coming forth from his chamber,' one would not err in saying this also concerning them.
8:413
How so? Because they came forth then more brilliantly than this one that thus comes forth.
8:414
For this one came forth illuminating the world with perceptible light, but they, illuminating the world in another way—I mean spiritually.
8:415
For on their account the king straightway sent forth an edict containing these words:
8:416
'It seemed good before me to declare the signs and wonders which the God has wrought for us, how great and mighty they are.'
8:417
So that they went forth emitting a brighter ray, which was radiant even in those very regions, but was above all able to be extended everywhere through the royal letters, and to dispel the darkness that was spread over all.
8:418
He did not command the furnace to be quenched, but by this very thing he honoured them most—by believing that they would be able not only to walk within, but even to come out while it was still burning.
8:419
But let us look also, if you please, at the words of the jailer.
8:420
'Sirs, what must I do, that I may be saved?' What is sweeter than this utterance? This makes even angels leap for joy.
8:421
That He might hear this utterance, the Only-begotten of God even became a servant.
8:422
This utterance those who believed at the beginning spoke to Peter:
8:423
'What shall we do, that we may be saved?' And what does he say? 'Believe, and be baptized.'
8:424
Paul would gladly have fallen even into hell, in order to hear this utterance from the Jews, out of his longing for their salvation and obedience.
8:425
He commits the whole matter to them; he pries into nothing.
8:426
But let us look at what follows.
8:427
This one does not say, 'That I may be saved,' but the teaching had become for him clearer than any utterance.
8:428
For straightway he becomes a herald.
8:429
He needs not to be catechized, like the jailer, but what? He proclaims God, and confesses His power.
8:430
'Of a truth I know that your God is Himself God of gods, and Lord of lords;'
8:431
'that He sent forth His angel, and delivered you from the furnace.'
8:432
And what after this? Not one jailer, but many are catechized through the royal letters, through the sight of the events.
8:433
For that the king would not have lied is somehow plain to everyone.
8:434
因為他斷不肯為那些被擄的人作這樣的見證,也不肯貶損自己的尊嚴;
For he would not have been willing to testify such things concerning captives, nor to throw down his own dignity;
8:435
he would not have been willing to incur the reputation of so great folly.
8:436
So that unless the manifestation of the truth were great, he would not have written such things, and with so many present.
8:437
Do you see how great the power of the bonds is? How great the might of hymn-singing in affliction? They did not despair nor collapse, but were then rather more vehement; then their zeal was the greater.
8:438
為甚麼在監獄裡被捆綁的人得了釋放,在窯裡那些丟他們進去的人卻被燒死了呢?其實理當受此報應的是那王;
Why is it that in the prison those who were bound were loosed, but in the furnace those who cast them in were consumed? And yet it were fitting that the king should suffer this;
8:439
for it was not those who bound nor those who cast them in that sinned so greatly as he who commanded this to be done.
8:440
For what reason, then, did those men perish? Here there is not much need of precise reasoning.
8:441
For this reason it was so ordered, that the might of the fire might be displayed, and the miracle become greater.
8:442
For if it thus devoured those outside, how did it show unharmed those it held within? That the power of God might become evident.
8:443
也不要有人希奇,我竟把王放在與禁卒同等的地位;
And let no one marvel that I have set the king in the rank of the jailer;
8:444
for this one was in no way more illustrious than that one.
8:445
But, as I said, the righteous, when they are in afflictions, are then especially the more vehement, whenever they are in bonds.
8:446
For to suffer anything for Christ's sake is of all consolation the greatest.
8:447
Do you wish me to remind you also of another prison? It is needful to pass from this chain to another prison.
8:448
Which one do you wish? That of Jeremiah? or that of Joseph? or that of John? Thanks be to Paul's chain!
8:449
How many prisons did it open by the word? Do you wish that of John? He too was once bound for Christ's sake and for the law of God.
8:450
What then? Was he idle while he was in the prison? Did he not send from thence, out of the prison, saying to his disciples, 'Go and say to Christ, Are You He that should come, or do we look for another?' So even while there he was teaching.
8:451
But did not Jeremiah prophesy concerning the Babylonian, doing all his own work even there? And what of Joseph? Was he not bound for thirteen years? Yet even so, not even there did he forget virtue.
8:452
When we have spoken of the bonds of one more, we will bring the discourse to a close.
8:453
我們自己的主也曾被捆綁——就是那位釋放世界脫離眾罪的主;
Our own Master also was bound—He who loosed the world from its sins;
8:454
那雙成就了千萬善事的手也被捆綁了;
those hands were bound that had wrought ten thousand good things;
8:455
'For having bound Him,' it says, 'they led Him to Caiaphas.'
8:456
And He was bound who had wrought so many wonders.
8:457
我們思想這些事,就總不要心懷不滿,反倒即使被捆綁,也要歡喜快樂;
Considering these things, let us never be discontented, but even if we be bound, let us rejoice;
8:458
and even if we be not in bonds, let us be disposed as though bound together with them.
