'Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; above all, taking up the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the Evil One; and receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.'
24:2
'Having girded,' he says, 'your loins with truth.'
24:3
What then is this? It has been said by us in the discourse before this one, that we must be so lightly equipped as to have nothing to hinder us from running.
24:4
'And having put on,' he says, 'the breastplate of righteousness.'
24:5
Just as the breastplate cannot be pierced, so also is righteousness.
24:6
And by righteousness here he means the universal and virtuous life.
24:7
Such a man no one will ever be able to cast down; but though many wound him, none cleaves him through—not even the devil himself.
24:8
As one might say, having taken righteous deeds to one's own heart.
24:9
Concerning these things Christ says:
24:10
'Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.'
24:11
He who has taken this to his heart is as strong as a breastplate.
24:12
Such a man will never be provoked to anger.
24:13
'And having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.'
24:14
This has been stated somewhat obscurely.
24:15
What then does it mean? He has fitted us with beautiful greaves—the preparation of the Gospel.
24:16
Or this at least he means: that we should be ready for the Gospel, and to this end make use of our feet, and prepare its way beforehand, and make ready in advance.
24:17
Or, if not this, then that they themselves should be ready for their departure.
24:18
The preparation of the Gospel, then, is nothing else but a most excellent life.
24:19
Which is what the Prophet said: 'Your ear has attended to the preparation of their heart,' that is, their readiness.
24:20
'Of the Gospel,' he says, 'of peace.'
24:21
For since he had made mention of war and battle, he shows that we must wage the battle against the demons.
24:22
For the Gospel is a Gospel of peace.
24:23
That war puts an end to another war—the war against God.
24:24
If we war against the devil, we are at peace with God.
24:25
Fear not, therefore, beloved: it is a Gospel.
24:26
'Above all, taking up the shield of faith.'
24:27
By faith here he does not mean knowledge—for then he would not have set it down after the others—but the grace through which the signs are wrought.
24:28
And with good reason does he call faith a shield.
24:29
For just as the shield is thrown before the whole body, being as it were a wall, so too is faith.
24:30
'Wherewith,' he says, 'you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the Evil One.'
24:31
For nothing is able to cut through this shield.
24:32
For hear Christ saying to His disciples:
24:33
'If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove.'
24:34
And how shall we come to have this faith? When we set those other things aright.
24:35
And by the darts of the Evil One he means both temptations and unseemly desires.
24:36
And well did he add, 'the fiery ones.'
24:37
For such are the desires.
24:38
But if faith gave commands to demons, much more also to the passions of the soul.
24:39
'Receive,' he says, 'the helmet of salvation.'
24:40
That is, of your salvation.
24:41
For he fences them round about, as leading them forth to war.
24:42
'And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.'
24:43
He means either the Spirit itself, or the spiritual sword.
24:44
For by this all things are cut, by this all things are severed, and by this we cut off the head of the dragon.
24:45
'By means of all prayer and supplication,' he says, 'praying at every season in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and for me, that utterance may be given unto me in the opening of my mouth, with boldness to make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in a chain; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.'
24:46
Just as the word of God prevails over all things, so also does he who possesses the spiritual gift.
24:47
'For the word of God is living,' he says, 'and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.'
24:48
But mark the discernment of this blessed man.
24:49
He armed them with all security.
24:50
Then he teaches how one ought to call upon the King, that He may stretch forth His hand.
24:51
'By means of all prayer,' he says, 'and supplication, praying at every season in the Spirit.'
24:52
For it is possible not to pray in the Spirit, when one babbles vain repetitions.
24:53
'And thereunto,' he says, 'watching'—that is, being sober.
24:54
For such must he be who is armed, who stands beside the King—wakeful and sober.
24:55
'In all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and for me, that utterance may be given unto me in the opening of my mouth.'
24:56
What say you, O blessed Paul? Have you need of the disciples? And well did he say, 'In the opening of my mouth.'
24:57
He did not, then, rehearse beforehand the things he was to say, but even as Christ had said:
24:58
'When they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what you shall speak.'
24:59
For it shall be given to you in that hour what you shall speak.
24:60
Thus he did all things by faith, all things by grace.
24:61
'That I may make known with boldness,' he says, 'the mystery of the Gospel.'
24:62
That is, that I may make my defence, as I ought.
24:63
「你身上帶著鎖鏈,還需要別人嗎?」他說:「是的」;
'You are bound with a chain, and do you still stand in need of others?' 'Yes,' he says;
24:64
for Peter too was bound with a chain, yet nonetheless earnest prayer was made on his behalf.
24:65
'For which I am an ambassador in chains, that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.'
24:66
That is, that I may make my answer with boldness, with courage, and with much understanding.
24:67
'But that you also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things.'
24:68
Since he had made mention of his bonds, he leaves it also to Tychicus to discourse of something from himself.
24:69
凡屬教義和勸勉的事,他都藉著這書信闡明;
For whatever pertained to doctrine and exhortation, these things he set forth by the Epistle;
24:70
but whatever was of simple report, these he entrusted to the one who carried the Epistle.
24:71
'That you may know the things concerning us,' that is, 'That you may learn.'
24:72
This showed both his own love toward them, and theirs toward him.
24:73
'Whom I have sent to you,' he says, 'for this very purpose, that you may know our affairs, and that he may comfort your hearts.'
24:74
He says this not without design, but having first said, 'Having put on and girded about you,' which is a token of ever drawing near and unceasingly.
24:75
For hear the Prophet saying:
24:76
'Let it be unto him as the garment which he wraps about him, and as the girdle with which he is continually girded.'
24:77
And the Prophet says also that God has clothed Himself with a breastplate of righteousness, teaching us thereby that we must have these things always, and not for a brief season only.
24:78
'For the righteous,' he says, 'is bold as a lion.'
24:79
For he who is thus armed with the breastplate cannot fear the battle-line, but leaps into the midst of the enemy.
24:80
And Isaiah says, 'Beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace.'
24:81
Who would not run, who would not minister unto such a work, to preach peace as glad tidings, even the peace of God toward men, a peace in which men have wrought nothing, but God has accomplished the whole? And what is the preparation of the Gospel? Let us hear John saying:
24:82
'Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.'
24:83
但那一位所說的這些話,乃是為著洗禮;
But these things that one spoke on account of baptism;
24:84
and since after baptism there is need also of another preparation, this one points to that preparation, and says:
24:85
「以平安的福音為裝備」;
'In the preparation of the Gospel of peace';
24:86
hinting thereby that we must do nothing unworthy of the peace.
24:87
For since the feet are for the most part a symbol of one's manner of life, therefore he continually admonishes and says, 'See that you walk circumspectly,' speaking concerning one's life.
24:88
Let us therefore live as citizens worthy of the Gospel, and display a pure life and pure deeds throughout the whole of our life.
24:89
平安既已作為佳音傳開了,就當為這佳音預備現成的道路;
Peace has been preached as glad tidings; give to these tidings a ready road;
24:90
for if you again become enemies, there is no longer any preparation of peace.
24:91
Be ready; do not defer your coming to peace.
24:92
Just as you became ready for peace and for faith, so also continue therein.
24:93
The shield is faith, which first receives the assaults of the adversaries, and keeps the armour unwounded.
24:94
If then the faith be right and the life be right, the armour remains unwounded.
24:95
He discourses much concerning faith in other places also, and especially when writing to the Hebrews, and concerning hope.
24:96
'Believe,' he says, 'in the good things to come, and none of these darts shall wound you.'
24:97
For in dangers, in toils, by putting forward hope and faith, you will keep those things unwounded.
24:98
He who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He becomes a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
24:99
信心是盾牌,遮蓋那些不加妄自查究而單純相信的人;
Faith is a shield sheltering those who believe without over-curious questioning;
24:100
but if there be sophistries and reasonings and scrutinies, it is no longer a shield, but rather it entangles our feet.
24:101
Let faith be such as to cover over and overshadow the whole.
24:102
Let it not therefore be short, so as to leave the feet or any other part bare, but let the shield be well-proportioned.
24:103
For many are the reasonings that burn the soul, many the perplexities, many the straits; but faith truly gives rest to them all.
24:104
The devil sends in many things, setting our soul on fire, and leading it into doubt, as when some say:
24:105
'Is there indeed a resurrection? Is there a judgement? Is there a recompense?' But if you have the shield of faith, you will quench in it the darts of the devil.
24:106
Has some strange desire come upon you? Has a fire of wicked reasonings been kindled within? Put forward the faith of the good things to come, and it will not even appear, but will perish.
24:107
Hear Paul saying:
24:108
'For I reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.'
24:109
Do you see how many darts the righteous quenched of old? Or does it not seem to you a fiery dart, that the patriarch should be consumed with the inward fire while offering up his son? And other righteous men too quenched all his darts.
24:110
所以,或有推理攻擊我們,我們就舉出這信心;或有異常的私慾,我們就用它;或有勞苦艱難,我們就在它上面得安息;
Whether then reasonings war against us, let us put forward this; whether strange desires, let us use this; whether toils and afflictions, upon this let us find rest;
24:111
在一切軍裝之中,這是護衛;
of all the weapons this is the safeguard;
24:112
if we have not this, those others also will quickly be wounded.
24:113
'Above all,' he says, 'taking the shield of faith.'
24:114
What is 'Above all'? Both in the truth, and in the righteousness, and in the preparation of the Gospel.
24:115
That is, all these things have need of this.
24:116
'And take the helmet of salvation,' that is, henceforth you shall be able through this to be in safety, and to escape every peril.
24:117
因為正如頭盔四面周密地遮蓋頭部,不容它受任何傷害,反倒保全它;
For just as the helmet, covering the head carefully on every side, does not allow it to suffer any harm, but keeps it safe;
24:118
so also faith becomes in the stead of a shield, and in the stead of a helmet of salvation.
24:119
If we quench his darts, we shall speedily receive also the saving reasonings, which do not allow our ruling faculty to suffer anything.
24:120
For if these contrary reasonings be quenched, speedily those that are not such, but which save us and make us of good hope, shall be born within us, and like a helmet upon the head, shall rest upon our ruling faculty.
24:121
And not this only, but we shall also receive the sword of the Spirit, so that no longer merely to guard ourselves against the things sent against us, but also to smite the devil himself.
24:122
因為一個沒有絕望於己、也不領受那火箭的魂,必以極大的熱切站立抵擋仇敵,並用這寶劍撕裂牠的護心鏡,保羅也正是用它撕裂並擄掠了牠的意念;
For a soul that has not despaired of itself, nor received the fiery darts, shall stand with much readiness against the Enemy, and shall rend his breastplate with this sword, whereby Paul also rent and led captive his devices;
24:123
it shall cut off and behead the dragon.
24:124
他在這裡所說的「神的話」,或是指命令,或是指吩咐;
By 'the word of God' he means here either the command, or the injunction;
24:125
which the apostles too spoke everywhere in the name of Jesus Christ when they wrought miracles.
24:126
只要我們也在凡事上持守神的命令;
Only let us also in all things keep the commands of God;
24:127
for if we do them, by these we shall destroy and slay the dragon, the crooked serpent.
24:128
And consider, I pray you, the wisdom of Paul here.
24:129
For since he had said, 'You will be able to quench the fiery darts of the devil,' lest the devil should puff them up with pride, he shows that above all things we stand in need of God for this.
24:130
For what does he say? 'Through all prayer and supplication.'
24:131
These things shall come to pass, and by praying you will accomplish the whole.
24:132
But never, when you draw near, make request for yourself alone; and thus you will have God propitious to you.
24:133
'Through all prayer and supplication,' he says, 'praying at every season in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.'
24:134
Do not prescribe to me set times of the day.
24:135
'Praying without ceasing,' he says.
24:136
Have you not heard of that widow, how by her importunity she prevailed? Have you not heard of that friend, who at midnight by his persistence shamed the other into yielding? Have you not heard concerning the Syrophoenician woman, how by the constancy of her entreaty she called forth the Master's aid? All these prevailed by their perseverance.
24:137
'Praying,' he says, 'at every season in the Spirit.'
24:138
That is to say, Let us seek the things that pertain to God, nothing worldly, nothing of this present life.
24:139
There is need, then, not only of praying without ceasing, but also of doing so while watching.
24:140
'And watching,' he says, 'thereunto.'
24:141
Whether he here means all-night vigils, or the wakefulness of the soul, I accept both.
24:142
You see how that Canaanite woman kept watch, for even when the Lord answered her not, but even shook her off and called her a dog, she said, 'Yes, Lord, for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table';
24:143
and she did not desist until she obtained her request. And how did that widow cry out and persevere so long, until she was able to shame the judge who neither feared God nor regarded man? And how did the friend persist, staying on at an unseasonable hour of the night, until by his importunity he prevailed to rouse the other and shamed him by his perseverance? This is what it is to watch.
24:144
你願意學習何為靈魂的警醒麼?去到哈拿那裡,聽她親口所說的話;
Would you learn what it is to have wakefulness of soul? Go to Hannah; listen to her very words;
24:145
or rather, listen first to what preceded her words.
24:146
'They all rose up,' it says, 'from the table,' and she straightway turned not to sleep, nor to rest.
24:147
由此我看,她即或坐席時,身體也是輕省的,並未被甚麼食物所壓;
Whence it seems to me that even while she sat at table she was light of body, and not weighed down with any food;
24:148
for otherwise she would not have shed so many tears.
24:149
For if we, who are fasting and without food, scarcely pray in such a manner—or rather never pray in such a manner—much more would she not have prayed thus after a meal, unless even at the table she had been like those who take no food.
24:150
Let us men be ashamed before this woman; let us who beg for a kingdom, and do it yawning, be ashamed before her who entreated for a child, and did it with tears.
24:151
'And she stood,' it says, 'before the Lord,' and what does she say? 'Adonai, Lord, Eloi Sabaoth.'
24:152
This, being interpreted, is 'Lord, the God of hosts.'
24:153
她的眼淚比她的舌頭先流出來;
Her tears ran on before her tongue;
24:154
by these she hoped to bend God to her will.
24:155
哪裡有眼淚,哪裡必定也有苦難;
Where there are tears, there is assuredly also affliction;
24:156
where there is affliction, there is also great wisdom and attentiveness.
24:157
'If Thou wilt indeed hearken and hear,' she says, 'the prayer of Thy handmaid, and wilt give me a son, I will give him as a gift to the Lord all the days of his life.'
24:158
她並不說,只獻一年或兩年,像我們所行的;
She did not say, for a year only or for two, as we do;
24:159
她也不說,你若賜我一個孩子,我就獻上錢財;
neither did she say, If Thou wilt give me a child, I will give money;
24:160
but, 'I will give back the whole gift entire, the firstborn, the son of my vow.'
24:161
This woman was a daughter of Abraham.
24:162
亞伯拉罕是被求時才獻上;
He, when asked, gave;
24:163
but she gives even before the asking.
24:164
But observe here too her reverence.
24:165
'Her voice,' it says, 'was not heard, but her lips moved.'
24:166
Thus does he who desires to accomplish his end draw near to God—not in a slack manner, nor yawning, nor loosely, nor scratching himself, nor listlessly.
24:167
For could not God have given even without prayer?
24:168
Did He not know the woman's desire even before her asking? But had He given before the asking, the woman's earnestness would not have been made manifest, her virtue would not have been made plain, she would not have gained so great a reward.
24:169
So then the delay is not the fruit of envy nor of grudging, but of loving care.
24:170
When therefore you hear the Scripture saying that 'He had shut up her womb,' and that 'her rival provoked her,' understand that He wished to display the wisdom of the woman.
24:171
她使她的丈夫甘心順服於她;
She had her husband in subjection to her;
24:172
「我於你豈不比十個兒子還好麼?」經上說:「她的對頭激動她」;
'Am I not better to you than ten sons?' And 'her rival,' it says, 'provoked her';
24:173
這就是說,那對頭羞辱她,向她誇勝;
that is, she reproached her, she exulted over her;
24:174
and yet she never avenged herself upon her, nor prayed against her, nor said,
24:175
'Since my rival reproaches me, avenge me.'
24:176
That other had children, but this woman had her husband's love as a counterpoise.
24:177
With this, at any rate, he even comforted her, saying,
24:178
'Am I not better to you than ten sons?' But again let us behold the woman's wisdom.
24:179
'And Eli counted her,' it says, 'as one drunken.'
24:180
But behold what she says to him too:
24:181
'Count not thy handmaid for a daughter of Belial, for out of the abundance of my meditation have I been wasting away until now.'
24:182
This is truly the mark of a contrite heart: when we are not embittered against those who insult us, when we are not indignant, when we make defense.
24:183
沒有甚麼像苦難那樣使人心有智慧;
Nothing so makes the heart wise as affliction;
24:184
nothing is so sweet a thing as godly sorrow.
24:185
'Out of the abundance of my meditation,' she says, 'have I been wasting away until now.'
24:186
凡不生育的都當聽,凡渴望有兒女的都當聽,無論男女都當聽;
Hearken, all you who are barren; hearken, all you who long for children; hearken, both men and women;
24:187
for indeed men too have oftentimes contributed to this.
24:188
For hear the Scripture saying:
24:189
'And Isaac entreated the Lord for Rebekah his wife, because she was barren.'
24:190
For prayer can do great things.
24:191
'In all perseverance,' he says, 'and supplication for all the saints, and for me,' setting himself last.
24:192
What are you doing, O blessed Paul, in setting yourself last? 'Yes,' he says, 'that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in a chain.'
24:193
Where are you an ambassador? 'To men,' he says.
24:194
Oh, the loving-kindness of God!
24:195
He sent ambassadors from heaven on their behalf, for peace, and men laid hold of them and bound them, and did not so much as respect the common law—that an ambassador never suffers any harm.
24:196
'Yet nonetheless I am an ambassador in a chain.'
24:197
鎖鏈加在我身上,箝制我的膽量;但你們的禱告卻使我的口張開,叫我在其中能放膽講說,正如我所該講的;
The chain lies upon me, muzzling my boldness; but your prayer opens my mouth, that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak;
24:198
that is, That I may speak all that I was sent to say.
24:199
'But that you also may know my affairs, and what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make all things known to you.'
24:200
If he is faithful, he will speak no falsehood, but will report everything truthfully.
24:201
'Whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you may know our circumstances, and that he may comfort your hearts.'
24:202
他的意思是說,免得那些存心要恐嚇你們的人得著機會;
That it may not be permitted, he says, to those who wish, to strike terror into you;
24:203
因為他們很可能正身處艱難困苦之中;
for it was likely that they were amid grievous trials;
24:204
for the phrase 'He shall comfort your hearts' hints at this.
24:205
That he may not permit you, he says, to fall down.
24:206
'Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.'
24:207
他為他們祈求平安,並願愛心與信心同得;
He prays for them peace and love together with faith;
24:208
for he wishes them not merely to hold the word of love, and so to mingle themselves with those of another faith.
24:209
He means either this, or that: that they should also have faith, so as to be confident even concerning things to come.
24:210
The peace is toward God, and so also is the love.
24:211
因為若有了平安,也就必有愛心;
For if there be peace, there will also be love;
24:212
and if love, there will also be peace.
24:213
因為離了信心,愛心便毫無益處;
For there is no benefit in love apart from faith;
24:214
or rather, love could not even come to be in any other way.
24:215
'And grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in incorruption.'
24:216
Here he made a distinction, setting peace by itself, and grace by itself.
24:217
「以純潔不朽的心」是甚麼意思呢?或是指端莊合宜,或是指為著那不朽壞的事;
What does 'in incorruption' mean? Either in decorousness, or on behalf of things incorruptible;
24:218
that is, not in wealth, nor in glory, but in those incorruptible things.
24:219
Just as we speak of the virgin being corrupted, so also of the soul.
24:220
'Lest by any means your thoughts should be corrupted;'
24:221
and again elsewhere, 'In your teaching, incorruption,' he says.
24:222
For what, tell me, is the corruption of the body? Is it not the dissolution of the whole, and of its very composition? This happens also to the soul, when sin has entered in.
24:223
因為靈魂的美麗,就是節制與公義;
For the beauty of the soul is temperance and righteousness;
24:224
the health of the soul is courage and prudence.
24:225
For the shameful man is ill-favored, and so is the covetous man, and he who gives himself over to wicked deeds, and the coward, being unmanly and weak, is in poor condition.
24:226
罪會造成敗壞,從這裏就顯明了;
And that sins work corruption is plain from this;
24:227
for indeed they make men both shameful and weak, and prepare them to grow faint.
24:228
我們說童女被玷污敗壞,嚴格說來,正是為此緣故,並非單因身體受了損壞,乃是因為那違法的行為;
For we say that the virgin is corrupted, and in a strict sense on this account, not because the body alone is corrupted, but because of the transgression;
24:229
因為所發生的乃是一種結合;
for what takes place is a union;
24:230
but if this union were the corruption, then marriage too would be corruption.
24:231
所以敗壞的不是那結合,乃是那罪;
So that it is not the union that is corruption, but the sin;
24:232
what could the corruption of a house be, but its dissolution? And everywhere corruption is a certain change for the worse, taking place toward another condition and the disappearance of the former state.
24:233
For hear the Scripture saying:
24:234
'All flesh had corrupted its way;'
24:235
and again, 'In corruption unendurable;'
24:236
and again, 'Men corrupted in mind.'
24:237
Corruptible is our body, but incorruptible is the soul.
24:238
那麼,我們也不要叫這靈魂敗壞了;
Let us not, then, corrupt this also;
24:239
從前那罪已經作成了這事;
the former sin wrought this;
24:240
但受洗重生之後所犯的罪,卻能連靈魂也一同敗壞,使它容易被那不死的蟲所侵害;
but the sin after the laver is able to corrupt the soul also, and to make it an easy prey to the undying worm;
24:241
for it would not have laid hold, had it not found the soul corruptible.
24:242
蟲不能侵蝕金剛石;
A worm does not touch adamant;
24:243
and even if it should touch it, it accomplishes nothing.
24:244
For that which is being corrupted is full of foul odor.
24:245
For hear the Prophet saying:
24:246
'My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.'
24:247
但這身體的敗壞終要穿上不朽壞,而那靈魂的敗壞卻不再如此;
But this corruption shall put on incorruption, while that other shall no longer do so;
24:248
for where there is incorruption, corruption is not.
24:249
So that it is a corruption that is incorruptible, having no end, a death that is deathless.
24:250
Which is just what would have come to pass, had the body remained immortal.
24:251
Thus, if we depart hence having corruption, we shall possess our corruption incorruptible and unending.
24:252
因為被火焚燒、又不斷被蟲所吞噬,這正是一種不朽壞的敗壞;
For to be burned and to be devoured perpetually by the worm is an incorruptible corruption;
24:253
這正如發生在有福的約伯身上的情形;
such as was also the case with the blessed Job;
24:254
他不斷腐爛敗壞,卻仍不至滅亡,而且這樣拖延了許多時日;
he was being corrupted, and yet did not perish, and this though much time had gone by;
24:255
but he ever melted the clods of earth, scraping away the discharge.
24:256
那時靈魂所要受的,也是這一類的苦,有眾蟲環繞著它、齧穿著它,不是兩年、不是三年、不是十年、不是一百年、也不是一萬年,乃是永無窮盡的年日;
Something of this kind will the soul then suffer, with the worms encircling it and gnawing through it, not for two years, nor for three, nor for ten, nor for a hundred, nor for ten thousand, but for ages without end;
24:257
'For their worm shall not die,' he says.
24:258
Let us then be afraid, I entreat you; let us dread the words, that we may not fall into the deeds.
24:259
Covetousness is corruption, a corruption more grievous than all others, leading to idolatry.
24:260
Let us flee the corruption, let us choose the incorruption.
24:261
你曾詐取別人的財物麼?那些奪來的財物終要朽壞,但那貪婪之心卻長存,成了一種構成「不朽壞的敗壞」之根由;
Have you defrauded someone? The things gotten by fraud pass into corruption, but the covetousness remains, becoming a corruption that is the ground of incorruption;
24:262
the enjoyment passes away, but the sin remains incorruptible.
24:263
在今生若未能將一切罪惡脫盡,這實在是可怕的禍患;
It is a dreadful evil not to have stripped off everything in the present life;
24:264
it is a great calamity to depart hence carrying burdens of sins.
24:265
'For in Hades, who shall confess to You?' he says. There is a tribunal there; there is no longer time for repentance.
24:266
How much did the rich man then bewail!
24:267
How much did those say who had not fed Christ!
24:268
yet nonetheless they were led away into the eternal fire.
24:269
How many things will those who have worked iniquity say in that day: 'Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons!'
24:270
And yet, they were not acknowledged.
24:271
這一切固然都在那日發生;
All these things indeed come to pass in that day;
24:272
yet there is no profit in them, unless they take place now.
24:273
Let us therefore be afraid, lest at some time we too should say in that day:
24:274
『主啊,我們甚麼時候見你餓了,卻不供養你呢?』我們如今就當供養他,不是一天,也不是兩天,也不是三天;
'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and did not feed You?' Let us feed Him now, not for one day, nor for a second, nor for a third;
24:275
for it says, 'Let not mercy and faithfulness forsake you.'
24:276
他並沒有說『行一次』,也沒有說『行第二次』;
He did not say, 'Do it once,' nor 'a second time';
24:277
since the virgins too had oil, but it was not sufficient.
24:278
So then we have need of much oil, and we must be like a fruitful olive tree in the house of God.
24:279
Let us therefore consider how great a burden of sins each one of us bears, and let us make our acts of loving-kindness a counterweight to them, or rather far more abundant, so that not only may our sins be blotted out, but that our righteous deeds may also be reckoned to us for righteousness.
24:280
因為我們的善行若不多到既能脫去對我們的控告,又能從其餘剩的算為我們的義,就沒有人能救我們脫離刑罰;
For unless our good works be so many as both to strip off our accusations and, out of what remains over, to be reckoned to us for righteousness, no one will deliver us from punishment;
24:281
from which may it be granted to us all to be delivered, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, and so forth.
