Lecture V of the Candidates for Enlightenment, delivered extempore at Jerusalem: On Faith.
5:2
And a reading from the Epistle to the Hebrews:
5:3
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
5:4
For by it the elders obtained a good report, and so forth.
5:5
How great a dignity the Lord bestows on you, who are being transferred from the order of the Catechumens to that of the Faithful!
5:6
Paul the Apostle, presenting this, says: God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ.
5:7
For since God is called faithful, you too receive this same appellation, receiving a great dignity.
5:8
For just as God is called good, and just, and almighty, and Creator of all things, so also faithful.
5:9
Consider, then, to what dignity you are ascending—that of God—
5:10
being about to become a partaker of His appellation.
5:11
Henceforth, therefore, this is what is required: that each one of you be found faithful in conscience.
5:12
因為要找到一個忠信的人乃是難事;
For it is a hard task to find a faithful man;
5:13
not that you should show your conscience to me (for you are not to be judged by man's day), but that you may show to God the sincerity of your faith—to Him who tries the reins and hearts, and knows the thoughts of men.
5:14
A faithful man is a great thing, being richer than every rich man.
5:15
For to the faithful belongs the whole world of riches, in that he despises and tramples upon them.
5:16
因為那些外表富足、擁有許多的人,其靈魂卻是貧窮的;
For those who are rich in appearance, and possess much, are poor in soul;
5:17
for the more they gather, the more they are consumed by the desire of what they lack.
5:18
但有信心的人——這乃是最奇妙的——在貧窮中卻是富足的;
But the faithful man—most paradoxical of all—is rich in poverty;
5:19
for knowing that he need only have covering and food, and being content with these, he has trampled upon riches.
5:20
信心的尊榮不僅在我們這些承受基督之名的人中間是大的;
And not among us alone, who bear the name of Christ, is the dignity of faith great;
5:21
but indeed all things accomplished in the world, even those done by people outside the Church, are accomplished by faith.
5:22
藉著信心,婚姻的律法使彼此原是陌生人的結合為一;
By faith the laws of marriage unite into one those who were strangers to each other;
5:23
and a man, a stranger to other bodies and goods, becomes a partner through the faith pledged in marriage contracts.
5:24
藉著信心,農耕也得以維持;
By faith farming too is sustained;
5:25
for he who does not believe that he will reap a harvest does not endure the labors.
5:26
藉著信心,航海的人信託於極小的木板,便以波濤起伏不定的洶湧,換取了最堅實的元素——大地;
By faith seafaring men, trusting to the tiniest plank, exchange the unstable rushing of the waves for the most solid element, the earth;
5:27
committing themselves to uncertain hopes, and bringing along faith as more secure than any anchor.
5:28
因此,人類大部分的事務都是靠信心維持的;
By faith, then, most of human affairs are sustained;
5:29
這不僅在我們中間被相信,正如所說的,也在教會以外的人中間被相信;
and this is believed not among us alone, but also among those outside, as has been said;
5:30
for even if they do not accept the Scriptures, but offer certain teachings of their own, even those they accept by faith.
5:31
今天所誦讀的經文也召你們歸入真正的信心,向你們陳明了道路——就是你們當如何使神喜悅;
To the true faith you are also being called by today's reading, which set before you the way—how you too must please God;
5:32
for it says that without faith it is impossible to please Him.
5:33
For when will a man set out to serve God, not believing that He is a rewarder? When will a maiden remain a virgin, or a youth keep himself chaste, not believing that there is an unfading crown of purity? Faith is the eye that gives light to every conscience, and produces understanding.
5:34
And unless you believe, neither shall you understand.
5:35
信心堵住獅子的口,正如但以理的事;
Faith stops the mouths of lions, as in the case of Daniel;
5:36
for the Scripture says concerning him, that Daniel was brought up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
5:37
Is there anything more terrible than the devil? Yet even against him we have no other weapon than faith, an immaterial shield against the unseen enemy.
5:38
因為他發出各樣的箭,在無月的黑暗中射倒那些不儆醒的人;
For he sends forth manifold darts, and shoots down in the moonless dark those who are not sober;
5:39
but since the enemy is unseen, we have a mighty covering—faith—according to the Apostle who says:
5:40
In all things taking up the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the Evil One.
5:41
許多時候,那可恥情慾之快樂的火箭是從魔鬼射來的;
Often a fiery dart of shameful desire of pleasure is sent from the devil;
5:42
but faith, depicting the judgment to come and cooling the mind, quenches the dart.
5:43
And much is the discourse concerning faith, and the whole day's time would not suffice for us to recount it.
5:44
But let it suffice us now for the present to take from the examples of the Old Testament Abraham alone, since we too have become his sons through faith.
5:45
He was justified not by works alone, but by faith.
5:46
他固然成就了許多事;
For he did indeed accomplish many things;
5:47
yet he was never called the friend of God until he believed.
5:48
And every work of his was accomplished according to faith.
5:49
他因信離開了父母;
He left his parents through faith;
5:50
he left his fatherland, and country, and house, through faith.
5:51
As, then, he was justified, so be you also justified.
5:52
他在身體上對於生育已經如同死了;
He was henceforth dead in body for begetting children;
5:53
for he was an old man, and he had Sarah his wife, now an old woman, and there was no hope of childbearing.
5:54
神向這老人應許生子;
God promises the old man the begetting of a child;
5:55
and Abraham, not being weak in faith, and considering his own body now dead,
5:56
attending not to the weakness of the body, but to the power of Him who promised, and reckoning faithful the One who had promised, marvelously obtained the child as from bodies already dead.
5:57
And after he obtained him, being commanded to offer up his son—and that too after hearing the word, In Isaac shall your seed be called—he offered up his only-begotten son to God, believing that God is able even to raise from the dead.
5:58
And having bound his son and laid him upon the wood, in purpose indeed he offered him, but by the goodness of God he received his son alive, God delivering to him a lamb in the stead of the child.
5:59
他在這些事上既是有信心的,便被印證歸於義,並受了割禮,作他未受割禮時所有之信心的印記;
Being faithful in these things, he was sealed unto righteousness and received circumcision, a seal of the faith which he had while in uncircumcision;
5:60
receiving the promise that he should be the father of many nations.
5:61
Let us see, then, how Abraham is the father of many nations.
5:62
論到猶太人,按肉身的傳承,他無可否認地是他們的父;
For of the Jews he is confessedly the father, by succession according to the flesh;
5:63
but if we attend to the fleshly aspect, we shall be compelled to call the oracle false.
5:64
因為他不再是按肉身作我們眾人的父;
For he is no longer the father of us all according to the flesh;
5:65
but the example of his faith makes us all sons of Abraham.
5:66
怎樣作、用甚麼方式作呢?在人看來,有人從死裡復活乃是難以置信的事;
How, and in what manner? Among men it is something incredible that anyone should rise from the dead;
5:67
just as likewise it is incredible that childbearing should come from aged bodies grown dead.
5:68
But when Christ is proclaimed—crucified on the wood, having died and risen again—we believe.
5:69
所以,藉著信心的相似,我們得以進入亞伯拉罕之兒子的名分,並且在信心之後,像他一樣領受屬靈的印記;
Therefore, by the likeness of faith, we come into the adoption of Abraham, and then, after faith, like him we receive the spiritual seal;
5:70
being circumcised by the Holy Spirit through the laver, not the foreskin of the body, but the heart, according to Jeremiah who says:
5:71
你們要為神將你們心裡的污穢除掉(將你們心的包皮割除);
And you shall circumcise unto God the foreskin of your heart;
5:72
In the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, and so forth.
5:73
If we keep this faith, we shall be without condemnation, and shall be adorned with all manner of virtues.
5:74
For so great is the power of faith that it even bears men up walking upon the sea.
5:75
彼得是與我們一樣的人,由血肉所構成,靠著同樣的食物存活;
Peter was a man like us, composed of blood and flesh, and sustained by the same kinds of food;
5:76
but when Jesus said, Come, having believed, he walked upon the waters, having upon the waters a faith more sure than any foundation, and his heavy body was lifted up by the lightness of faith.
5:77
但他相信的時候,在水面上立足穩固;
But as long as he believed, he had a sure footing above the water;
5:78
yet when he doubted, then he began to sink.
5:79
For as his faith was little by little relaxed, his body too was drawn down together with it.
5:80
And perceiving his weakness, Jesus, who corrects the sufferings of souls, said, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? And again, being strengthened by Him who took hold of his right hand, from the moment he believed again, being led by the hand of the Master, he resumed that same walk upon the waters.
5:81
For this the Gospel mentioned indirectly, saying that, And when they had gone up into the boat.
5:82
因為經上沒有說彼得是游過去再上船的;
For it did not say that Peter swam across and got up;
5:83
but it gives to understand that as far a distance as he came toward Jesus, just so far did he return, and again went up into the boat.
5:84
And faith has such power that not only is the believer saved, but indeed others also have been saved by the faith of others.
5:85
在迦百農的那癱子並沒有信心;
The paralytic in Capernaum was not faithful;
5:86
but those who carried him and let him down through the tiles believed.
5:87
For the soul too was sick along with the body of the sick man.
5:88
你不要以為我是無故指控他;
And do not think that I accuse him without cause;
5:89
the Gospel itself has said it:
5:90
Jesus, seeing not his faith, but their faith, says to the paralytic, Arise.
5:91
Those who carried him believed, and the paralytic enjoyed the healing.
5:92
你願意更確切地看見,有些人是藉著別人的信心得救的麼?拉撒路死了;
And do you wish to see more surely that some are saved by the faith of others? Lazarus died;
5:93
頭一天、第二天、第三天都過去了;
the first and second and third day had passed;
5:94
his sinews were dissolved, and corruption was now consuming the body.
5:95
How could one dead four days entreat the Redeemer on his own behalf? But that which was lacking in the dead man was supplied through his true sisters.
5:96
因為當主來的時候,那姊妹俯伏在祂面前;
For when the Lord came, the sister fell down before Him;
5:97
祂說:你們把他安放在哪裡?她回答說:主啊,他現在必是臭了,因為他死了已經四天了。主便說:你若信,就必看見神的榮耀;
and when He said, Where have you laid him? and she answered, Lord, by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days, the Lord says, If you believe, you shall see the glory of God;
5:98
all but saying, You, supply what is lacking of faith in the dead man.
5:99
And so greatly prevailed the faith of the sisters, that it called the dead man back from the gates of Hades.
5:100
又有人為著別人相信,便有能力叫人從死裡復活;
Then others, having believed on behalf of others, prevailed to rise from the dead;
5:101
but you, if you believe sincerely on your own behalf, will you not be benefited even more? But even if you are unbelieving or of little faith, the Lord is loving toward mankind, and bears with you when you repent.
5:102
Only say, you also, with a good will:
5:103
I believe, Lord; help my unbelief.
5:104
你縱然以為自己已經有信心了,卻仍未有完全的信心;
And if you suppose that you are even faithful, yet you do not yet have the perfection of faith;
5:105
you too have need to say, like the Apostles:
5:106
Lord, increase our faith.
5:107
For something you have from yourself, but something much you receive from Him.
5:108
For the name of faith is one in its appellation, but is divided into two kinds.
5:109
因為有一類信心,是教義上的,乃是靈魂對某一件事的認同;
For there is one kind of faith, the doctrinal, which has the soul's assent concerning some particular thing;
5:110
and it profits the soul, as the Lord says:
5:111
He who hears My words, and believes Him who sent Me, has everlasting life, and comes not into judgment.
5:112
He who believes in the Son is not judged, but has passed from death into life.
5:113
O the great loving-kindness of God toward mankind!
5:114
因為義人固然在多年之久使祂喜悅;
For the righteous indeed pleased Him in many years;
5:115
but what those acquired by pleasing Him through many years, this Jesus now bestows on you in a single hour.
5:116
For if you believe that the Lord Jesus is Christ, and that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved and transferred into paradise by Him who brought the robber into paradise.
5:117
And do not disbelieve that it is possible.
5:118
For He who saved the robber who believed for one single hour, on this holy Golgotha, the same will save you also when you believe.
5:119
And there is a second kind of faith, which is bestowed by Christ as a part of grace.
5:120
For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing.
5:121
This faith, then, which is bestowed by grace from the Spirit, is not only doctrinal, but also works things above man.
5:122
For whoever has this faith shall say to this mountain, Remove from here to there, and it shall remove.
5:123
For when any one says this according to faith, believing that it comes to pass, and doubts not in his heart, then he receives the grace.
5:124
And concerning this faith it is said, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed.
5:125
正如芥菜種,論大小固然微小,論功效卻是火熱的,雖種在小小的地方,卻含著大枝子,長成之後甚至能蔭庇飛鳥;
For just as the grain of mustard seed is small in size, yet fiery in its working, and though sown in a small space encompasses great branches, and when grown can even shelter the birds;
5:126
so also faith in the soul accomplishes the greatest things in the swiftest moment.
5:127
因為它對神形成想像,並仰觀神,只就那被光照的信心所能及的程度而言;
For it forms an image concerning God, and beholds God, in so far as faith, being enlightened, is capable;
5:128
it ranges over the ends of the world, and before the consummation of this age already beholds the judgment, and the recompense of the promises.
5:129
所以,你要有那從你自己發出、向著祂的信心;
Have, therefore, the faith that is from yourself toward Him;
5:130
that you may receive also from Him the faith that works things above man.
5:131
But in learning and profession acquire and keep only that faith which is now delivered to you by the Church, fortified out of all Scripture.
5:132
因為不是所有人都能誦讀聖經,有些人因沒有學識,有些人因某種事務纏身,以致攔阻他們得著這知識;
For since not all are able to read the Scriptures, but some are hindered from the knowledge by lack of learning, and others by some occupation;
5:133
in order that the soul may not perish for lack of learning, we comprise the whole doctrine of the faith in a few lines.
5:134
我願你們把這信經逐字記住,並在你們自己中間極其殷勤地誦念,不是寫在紙上,乃是靠記憶銘刻在心版上;
This I wish you to remember in its very wording, and to recite among yourselves with all diligence, not writing it on paper, but engraving it by memory upon the heart;
5:135
你要留心所傳交的這些事;
you shall give heed to the things delivered;
5:136
並要以此作為一生年日的資糧,此外不再接受別的;
and have this as a provision throughout all the time of your life, and besides this receive no other henceforth;
5:137
縱使我們自己改變,與我們現今所教導的相違,你也不可接受;
not even if we ourselves, having changed, should contradict what we now teach;
5:138
not even if an adverse angel, transformed into an angel of light, should wish to deceive you.
5:139
For even if we or an angel from heaven preach to you any other gospel than what you have now received, let him be accursed.
5:140
And for the present, hearing it in its very wording, remember the Faith; but expect, at the proper time, the establishment of each of its contents from the divine Scriptures.
5:141
因為這信經的諸條目,並不是照人所看為善的拼湊而成的;
For the articles of the Faith were not composed as seemed good to men;
5:142
but the most essential points gathered out of all Scripture make up one teaching of the Faith.
5:143
正如芥菜種,在一粒小小的子粒裡含著許多枝子;
And just as the seed of mustard in a small grain contains many branches;
5:144
so also this Faith, in a few words, has embraced in its bosom all the knowledge of godliness in the Old and New Testaments.
5:145
Behold, then, brethren, and hold fast the traditions which you now receive, and inscribe them upon the breadth of your heart.
5:146
你們要敬畏地持守,免得仇敵掠奪那些變得鬆懈的人;
Keep them with reverence, lest somehow the enemy despoil any who have grown careless;
5:147
lest some heretic pervert any of the things delivered to you.
5:148
For faith is to lay down the money upon the table (which we have now done), and God requires from you the accounts of the deposit.
5:149
I charge you, as the Apostle says, before God who gives life to all things, and Christ Jesus who witnessed before Pontius Pilate the good confession, that you keep this delivered Faith unspotted, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:150
生命的寶藏如今已交託給你了,那主在祂顯現的時候,必要尋取所交託之物;
A treasure of life has now been delivered to you, and at His appearing the Master will seek the deposit;
5:151
那可稱頌、獨有權能的,萬王之王、萬主之主,必在祂自己所定的時候將這事顯明出來;
which in His own times the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, shall show forth;
5:152
就是那獨一不死、住在人不能靠近之光裡的;
who only has immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable;
5:153
是人未曾看見、也是不能看見的;
whom no man has seen, nor can see;
5:154
to whom be glory, honor, and might unto the ages of ages.
