Of those being illumined. Delivered extempore at Jerusalem: On Repentance, and the Remission of Sins, and concerning the Adversary.
2:2
And a reading from Ezekiel:
2:3
The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the lawlessness of the lawless shall be upon him.
2:4
And the lawless, if he turn back from all his lawless deeds—and what follows.
2:5
罪是可怕的,違法乃是靈魂最沉重的疾病;
A dreadful thing is sin, and lawlessness is a most grievous disease of the soul;
2:6
cutting away its sinews, and becoming a cause of eternal fire.
2:7
罪是出於自主選擇的惡,是意志所長出的枝芽;
It is a self-chosen evil, an offshoot of the will;
2:8
and that we indeed sin of our own choice, the prophet somewhere says plainly:
2:9
我栽你是全然真實、能結果子的葡萄樹,你怎麼向我變為苦澀、成了外邦的葡萄樹呢?栽種原是美好的,果子卻因意志而成為惡的;
But I planted you a wholly true and fruitful vine; how then are you turned to bitterness, a strange vine? The planting was good, but the fruit, from the will, is bad;
2:10
and for this reason the planter is blameless, but the vine shall be burnt with fire, since it was planted for good, but bore fruit for evil out of its own will.
2:11
For God made man upright, according to Ecclesiastes, but they themselves sought out many devices.
2:12
For we are his workmanship, created unto good works, says the Apostle.
2:13
那位創造主既是良善的,就為著善行造了人;
The Creator, then, being good, created man for good works;
2:14
but the created being, by its own will, turned to wickedness.
2:15
如前所述,罪固然是可怕的惡,卻不是無法醫治的;
Sin, then, is indeed a dreadful evil, as has been said, but it is not incurable;
2:16
rather it is easily healed for one who lays it aside through repentance.
2:17
比方說,假設有人手中握著火;
Suppose, for example, that someone holds fire in his hand;
2:18
as long as he holds the coal, he is certainly burned.
2:19
但他若把炭丟開,就連那灼燒之物也一同丟棄了;
But if he lays aside the coal, he would also cast away with it that which burns;
2:20
and if anyone thinks he is not being burned while sinning, to such a one the Scripture says:
2:21
人若懷裡藏火,衣服豈能不燒著呢?因為罪是灼燒人的;
Can a man bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments? For sin burns;
2:22
它割斷靈魂的筋脈,〔又壓碎心思中屬靈的骨頭;
it cuts away the sinews of the soul [and crushes the spiritual bones of the understanding;
2:23
and it darkens the light of the heart].
2:24
But someone will say, what then is sin? Is it a living thing? Is it an angel, is it a demon? What is this thing that works within? It is not an enemy from without, O man, contending against you, but an evil offshoot growing up from yourself by your own will.
2:25
你若用正直的眼觀看,就沒有私慾;
Look with your eyes straight, and there is no lust;
2:26
and neither fornication, nor adultery, nor murder, nor any of the lawless deeds will have power over you.
2:27
But when you forget God, then thereafter you begin to devise wicked things and to commit lawless deeds.
2:28
然而你並非這事唯一的主使者;
Yet you are not the sole author of the matter;
2:29
but there is also another, a most wicked instigator, the devil.
2:30
He indeed suggests, but he does not by force prevail over those who do not yield.
2:31
Therefore Ecclesiastes says:
2:32
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, do not leave your place.
2:33
If you shut your door, even though he be near, he will not harm you.
2:34
But if you carelessly receive the thought of lust, it casts down roots in you through the reasonings, and binds your understanding, and drags you down into the pit of evils.
2:35
But perhaps you say, I am a believer, and lust does not get the better of me, even if I dwell on it rather frequently.
2:36
你豈不知一條久存的根,常能裂開磐石嗎?不要接受那種子,免得它撕裂你的信心;
Do you not know that a root remaining long has often even split a rock? Do not receive the seed, lest it tear apart your faith;
2:37
在它開花之先,要連根拔除那惡;
before [it] flowers, pluck out the evil by the root;
2:38
免得你起初疏忽,到後來卻要勞煩動斧頭、用火;
lest, having been negligent from the beginning, you have later to busy yourself with axes and fire;
2:39
你眼睛剛開始發炎,就要趁時醫治;
when your eye begins to ail, get it treated in good time;
2:40
lest, having been blinded, you then seek the physician.
2:41
如此,罪的始作俑者乃是魔鬼,是諸惡的生父;
The author of sin, then, is the devil, and the begetter of evils;
2:42
這話是主說的,不是我說的;
this the Lord has said, not I;
2:43
namely, that from the beginning the devil sins.
2:44
但他犯罪,並非因為他從本性中領受了非犯罪不可的必然;
But he sinned not because he received from his nature any necessity to sin;
2:45
不然,罪的緣由又要追溯到那如此造他的主身上;
since otherwise the pretext for sin would run back again to him who so fashioned him;
2:46
but having been fashioned good, he became a devil by his own will, taking the name from his deed.
2:47
他原是天使長,後來因他的誹謗(diaballein)而被稱為魔鬼(diabolos);
For being an archangel, he was afterwards called devil (diabolos), from his slandering (diaballein);
2:48
他原是神良善的僕役,後來成了撒但,名實相符;
and being a good servant of God, he became Satan, true to his name;
2:49
for Satan is interpreted as the opposing adversary.
2:50
...these teachings, but [hear] those of Ezekiel, the Spirit-bearing prophet.
2:51
For he, taking up a lamentation over him, says:
2:52
你是那肖像的印記,是華美的冠冕;你生在神的樂園中;
You are the seal of likeness, and a crown of beauty; you were begotten in the paradise of God;
2:53
you were begotten blameless in your days, from the day you were created, until iniquities were found in you.
2:54
Quite excellently he says, 'were found in you.'
2:55
For it was not brought in from without, but you yourself begot the evil.
2:56
And next he stated the cause:
2:57
你因你的華美心裡高傲;
Your heart was lifted up at your beauty;
2:58
because of the multitude of your sins, and because of your sins you were wounded, and I cast you to the ground.
2:59
The Lord, in agreement with this, again says in the Gospels:
2:60
I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
2:61
You see the agreement of the Old Testament with the New.
2:62
這位墜落者把許多人一同帶走,使之背叛;
This one, having fallen, drew away many with him;
2:63
這位將私慾投入那些順從他之人的心中;
this one casts lusts into those who yield to him;
2:64
from this one come adultery, fornication, and every kind of evil.
2:65
因著這位,我們的始祖亞當因悖逆被趕逐出去;
Because of this one, our forefather Adam was cast out for disobedience;
2:66
and instead of a paradise that of itself bore wondrous fruits, he exchanged it for the thorn-bearing earth.
2:67
那麼怎樣呢?有人要說:我們既受了欺騙,就已滅亡了;
What then? someone will say. We have perished, having been deceived;
2:68
如此豈不再沒有拯救了嗎?我們已經跌倒了;
is there then no longer salvation? We have fallen;
2:69
豈沒有再起來的可能嗎?我們已經瞎了眼;
is there no rising up again? We have been blinded;
2:70
豈不能再看見嗎?我們已經瘸了腿;
is there no recovering sight? We have become lame;
2:71
豈不能再健步而行嗎?簡而言之,我們已經死了;
is there no walking sound again? But to say it briefly, we have died;
2:72
is there no rising again? He who raised Lazarus, dead four days and already stinking, O man—
2:73
will he not far more easily raise you who are alive? He who poured out his precious blood for us will himself deliver us from sin.
2:74
弟兄們,我們不要對自己絕望;
Let us not despair of ourselves, brethren;
2:75
let us not cast ourselves into a hopeless condition.
2:76
For it is a dreadful thing not to believe in the hope of repentance.
2:77
因為那不指望得救的人,便毫無顧忌地罪上加罪;
For he who does not expect salvation recklessly adds evil upon evil;
2:78
but he who hopes for healing readily thereafter spares himself.
2:79
因為那不指望蒙赦的強盜,就走向瘋狂;
For the robber who expects no pardon proceeds to madness;
2:80
but having hoped for forgiveness, he often comes to repentance.
2:81
再者,蛇尚且蛻去舊皮;
Again, a serpent puts off its old skin;
2:82
難道我們不該脫去罪嗎?荊棘叢生的地若善加耕種,便轉成結果子的良田;
and shall we not put off sin? And thorny ground, when well cultivated, is changed into fruitful land;
2:83
and is salvation for us irremediable? Nature, then, admits of salvation, but what is required henceforth is the will.
2:84
God is loving toward mankind, and loving not a little.
2:85
不要說:我犯了淫亂,我犯了姦淫;
For do not say, I have committed fornication, I have committed adultery;
2:86
我作了可怕的事,且不止一次,乃是多次;
dreadful things have been done by me, and not once, but many times;
2:87
will he then pardon? will he grant amnesty? Hear what the psalmist says:
2:88
How great is the multitude of your goodness, O Lord!
2:89
你所積累的罪,勝不過神慈憐的浩大;
The sins you have gathered do not overcome the multitude of God's compassions;
2:90
your wounds do not overcome the great Physician's skill.
2:91
你只管憑信心將自己獻上;
Only give yourself with faith;
2:92
say yourself, too, after David:
2:93
我說:我要向耶和華承認我的過犯,控告自己;
I said, I will confess my iniquity against myself to the Lord;
2:94
and there shall come upon you what is similar, the thing said next:
2:95
And you forgave the ungodliness of my heart.
2:96
Do you wish to see God's love for mankind, you who have only lately come to the catechesis? Do you wish to see God's love for mankind, and the abundance of his long-suffering? Hear concerning Adam.
2:97
亞當,神所首造的人,違背了命令;
Adam, the first-formed of God, disobeyed;
2:98
could he not have brought death upon him at once? But see what the most loving Lord does.
2:99
祂固然把他逐出樂園;
He casts him indeed out of paradise;
2:100
[for he was unworthy of dwelling there because of his sin], but he settles him over against paradise, that, seeing whence he had fallen, and from what, into what he had been brought down, he might thereafter be saved by repentance.
2:101
該隱,那頭生的人,成了殺弟兄者,是諸惡的發明者、兇殺的開創者、頭一個懷嫉妒的人;然而他殺了弟兄,所受的定罪是甚麼呢?你必在地上歎息、戰兢;
Cain, the firstborn man, became a fratricide, an inventor of evils, and a chief of murders, and the first envious one; yet, having slain his brother, what is his condemnation? Groaning and trembling you shall be on the earth;
2:102
great the sin, but small the sentence.
2:103
This too, then, is truly God's love for mankind, but still small compared with what follows.
2:104
Consider [for] me the things in the days of Noah.
2:105
那些巨人犯了罪,當時許多不法的事傾覆遍地,因此洪水將要臨到;
The giants sinned, and much lawlessness was then poured over the earth, and because of this a flood was about to come;
2:106
and in the five hundredth year God brought forth the threat, but in the six hundredth he brought the flood upon the earth.
2:107
Do you see the breadth of God's love for mankind, stretching out over a hundred years?
2:108
Now, what he did then after the hundred years, could he not have done at once? But he deliberately delayed, giving a respite for repentance.
2:109
Do you see the goodness of God? And had the men of that time repented, they would not have failed of God's love for mankind.
2:110
Come with me now to the others also, those saved through repentance.
2:111
But perhaps among the women also someone will say:
2:112
我犯了淫亂,犯了姦淫,用各樣放蕩污穢了我的身體;
I have committed fornication, I have committed adultery, I have defiled my body with all manner of licentiousness;
2:113
還有得救的指望嗎?婦人哪,你看喇合,你也當指望得救;
is there salvation? Look, O woman, to Rahab, and expect, you too, salvation;
2:114
for if she who openly and publicly played the harlot was saved through repentance,
2:115
難道那在受恩典之前曾一次行淫的婦人,藉悔改和禁食就不得救嗎?她是怎樣得救的,你當查考;
shall she who once played the harlot, before receiving grace, not be saved through repentance and fasting? For how she was saved, inquire;
2:116
她只說了這話:你們的神是天上地下的神,是你們的神;
she said only this, 'Your God is in heaven and on the earth, your God';
2:117
因她放蕩的緣故,不敢說「是我的神」;
for she did not dare to say 'of myself,' because of her licentiousness;
2:118
and if you wish to receive written testimony of this woman's being saved, you have it recorded, in the Psalms:
2:119
我要向認識我的人題說喇合和巴比倫;
I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know me;
2:120
O the great love of God for mankind, that makes mention even of harlots in the Scriptures!
2:121
I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon—but together with this:
2:122
There is therefore salvation both for men and likewise for women, the salvation procured through repentance.
2:123
And even if a whole people should sin, it does not overcome the love of God for mankind.
2:124
百姓造了牛犢,神卻未離開祂對人類的愛;
The people made a calf, and God did not depart from his love for mankind;
2:125
the men denied God, but God denied not himself.
2:126
他們說:以色列啊,這是你的神;
These are your gods, O Israel, they said;
2:127
and yet again, as was his custom, the God of Israel became their saviour.
2:128
And not only did the people sin, but also Aaron the high priest.
2:129
因為摩西說:耶和華的怒氣也向亞倫發作;
For it is Moses who says, And upon Aaron came the wrath of the Lord;
2:130
and I prayed, he says, for him, and God forgave him.
2:131
那麼,摩西為犯罪的大祭司祈求,尚且打動了主;
Then if Moses, asking on behalf of a sinning high priest, prevailed upon the Lord;
2:132
難道獨生子耶穌為我們祈求,倒不能打動神嗎?祂既未因那人的過失攔阻他得就大祭司之職;
shall Jesus the only-begotten, asking on our behalf, not prevail upon God? And if he did not, on account of his fault, prevent that one from coming to the high priesthood;
2:133
has he prevented you, who have come from among the nations, from entering into salvation? Repent, O man, then, you too likewise, and grace is not withheld from you.
2:134
此後你當顯出無可指責的行為;
Present your manner of life henceforth blameless;
2:135
因為神實在是愛人類的,縱使用盡一切歲月,也不能配得地述盡祂對人類的愛;
for truly God is loving toward mankind, and all time will not be able to declare worthily his love for mankind;
2:136
nor, if all the tongues of men should come together at once, could they even so recount any part of God's love for mankind.
2:137
因為我們只說出聖經所記、論到祂向人之愛的一部分;
For we tell only a part of what is written concerning his love toward men;
2:138
but we do not know how much he has forgiven even to angels.
2:139
For he forgives even to those, since one alone is sinless,
2:140
Jesus, who cleanses our sins.
2:141
And concerning those things, enough.
2:142
But if you wish that yet other examples concerning us be set before you, come also to David the blessed, and take him as a pattern of repentance.
2:143
After his rest, toward evening, walking upon the roof, he looked carelessly, and suffered something human.
2:144
The sin was accomplished, but there did not die with it the candour of confession concerning the fault.
2:145
Nathan the prophet came, a swift reprover, a physician of the wound.
2:146
The Lord is angry, he says, and you have sinned—the commoner saying it to the king.
2:147
但大衛王〔那身穿紫袍的人〕並不惱怒;
But David the king [the wearer of the purple] was not indignant;
2:148
for he gave heed not to the one who spoke, but to the one who sent.
2:149
四圍環繞的眾兵丁並未使他自高;
The surrounding throng of soldiers did not puff him up;
2:150
for he considered the angelic army of the Lord, and feared the Invisible as though seeing him.
2:151
And he says to the one who came—or rather, through him, to the one who sent—answering:
2:152
You see the king's humility, you see his confession.
2:153
For had he been reproved by anyone? Did many share knowledge of the matter? The deed was done quickly, and at once the prophet was present as accuser, and the offender confesses the evil; and since he confessed candidly, he obtained the swiftest healing.
2:154
For the threatening prophet Nathan immediately says:
2:155
And the Lord has put away your sin.
2:156
O most swift a change of the loving God!
2:157
你大大惹動了耶和華的仇敵;
By provoking you have greatly provoked the enemies of the Lord;
2:158
你因公義固然有許多仇敵,但貞潔卻護衛著你;
many enemies indeed you had on account of your righteousness, but chastity kept guard over you;
2:159
but having betrayed your greatest weapon, you have the enemies standing ready, risen up against you.
2:160
先知就這樣安慰了他,但那有福的大衛,雖然確確實實聽見「耶和華已經除掉你的罪」,這君王卻沒有停止悔改;
The prophet, then, thus comforted him, but the blessed David, even though he most certainly heard that 'the Lord has put away your sin,' yet the king did not desist from repentance;
2:161
but he put on sackcloth instead of purple, and instead of gold-inlaid thrones, the king sat upon ashes and earth.
2:162
And not only did he sit on ashes, but he also had ashes for his food, as he himself says:
2:163
For I have eaten ashes like bread [and mingled my drink with weeping].
2:164
他用眼淚溶化了那曾起貪慾的眼睛;
He melted with tears the eye that had lusted;
2:165
I will wash my bed every night, he says, I will water my couch with my tears.
2:166
眾首領催他吃飯,他卻不依從;
When the princes urged him to eat bread, he would not yield;
2:167
for a whole seventh day he prolonged his fast.
2:168
君王尚且如此認罪,你這平民豈不更當認罪嗎?押沙龍叛亂之後,他雖有許多逃路,卻揀選經由橄欖山逃走,幾乎是在心裡呼求那位將從那裡升入諸天的救贖主;
If a king thus confessed, ought not you, a commoner, to confess? And after the rebellion of Absalom, though many ways of flight were open to him, he chose to flee by way of the Mount of Olives, all but in his mind calling upon the Redeemer who would ascend from there into the heavens;
2:169
示每苦苦咒罵他的時候,他說:由他去罷;
and when Shimei bitterly cursed him, he says, Let him alone;
2:170
for he knew that to him who forgives it shall be forgiven.
2:171
You see that it is good to confess.
2:172
You see that for those who repent there is salvation.
2:173
But what does he say? Afterward I repented.
2:174
撒瑪利亞王亞哈成了最不法的拜偶像者,是凶殘的、殺害先知的、與敬虔無分的,是貪戀田地和別人葡萄園的;
And Ahab, the king of Samaria, became a most lawless idolater, monstrous, the slayer of prophets, a stranger to godliness, a coveter of fields and of others' vineyards;
2:175
but when, through Jezebel, he had killed Naboth, and Elijah the prophet came and merely threatened him, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth.
2:176
And what does the loving God say to Elijah? Have you seen how Ahab was pricked to the heart before me? all but persuading the prophet's ardour to condescend to the penitent.
2:177
祂說:我必不在他在世的日子降這災禍;
For I will not bring, [he says,] the evil in his days;
2:178
雖然亞哈在蒙赦之後仍不肯離開惡行,那位施赦免者卻仍施赦免;
and yet, although he was about, after the pardon, not to desist from wickedness, the Forgiver forgives;
2:179
not being ignorant of the future, but bestowing the pardon suited to the present time of repentance.
2:180
For it belongs to a righteous judge to answer fittingly to each of those born.
2:181
Again, Jeroboam stood sacrificing to the idols upon the altar.
2:182
他的手枯乾了,因為他吩咐人捉拿那責備他的先知;
His hand became withered, because he had commanded the reproving prophet to be seized;
2:183
but having learned by experience the power of the one present, he says:
2:184
Entreat the Lord on my behalf.
2:185
And because of this word his hand was restored again.
2:186
先知尚且醫好了耶羅波安,難道基督不能醫治你的罪、釋放你嗎?瑪拿西也成了最不法的人,就是那鋸死以賽亞的,被各樣拜偶像之事所玷污,又使耶路撒冷充滿無辜人的血;
If the prophet healed Jeroboam, can Christ then not heal you of your sins and set you free? Manasseh too became most lawless, the one who sawed Isaiah asunder, and was defiled with all manner of idolatries, and filled Jerusalem with innocent blood;
2:187
but having been led captive to Babylon, he used the experience of his misfortunes for the healing of repentance.
2:188
For the Scripture says that Manasseh humbled himself before the Lord, and prayed, and the Lord heard, and brought him back into his kingdom.
2:189
If he who sawed the prophet asunder was saved through repentance,
2:190
and shall you, who have done nothing so great, not be saved? Take heed that you do not vainly disbelieve in the power of repentance.
2:191
你願意知道悔改有多大的能力嗎?你願意知道那拯救的剛強兵器,並認識認罪有多大的能力嗎?希西家藉著認罪擊退了十八萬五千仇敵;
Do you wish to know how strong repentance is? Do you wish to know the mighty weapon of salvation, and to learn how strong confession is? By confession Hezekiah routed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of the enemy;
2:192
great indeed truly is this also, but still small compared to what is to be told.
2:193
The same man, through repentance, recalled a divine sentence that had been pronounced.
2:194
For when he was sick, Isaiah said to him:
2:195
你當留遺命與你的家;
Set your house in order;
2:196
for you shall die, and not live.
2:197
What expectation, then, remained? What hope of salvation, when the prophet said,
2:198
for you shall die? But Hezekiah did not desist from repentance, remembering that word:
2:199
When, having turned back, you groan, then shall you be saved.
2:200
他轉臉朝牆,將心思從床榻伸向天上(因為牆壁的厚度攔阻不住那虔誠上達的禱告),說:主啊,求祢記念我;
He turned to the wall, and stretching his mind from the bed up to heaven (for the thickness of walls does not hinder prayers sent up with reverence), he says, Lord, remember me;
2:201
因為單是祢記念我這一件,便足以使人得醫治;
for sufficient for healing is this, that you should remember me;
2:202
祢不受時日的轄制,反倒祢自己就是生命的立法者;
you are not subject to times, but you yourself are the lawgiver of life;
2:203
for we do not live according to nativity and the conjunction of the stars, as some idly babble.
2:204
But you yourself are the lawgiver both of living, and of when one ought to live, as you will.
2:205
And to him for whom living was beyond hope because of the prophetic sentence, to this one fifteen years of life were added, the sun making its course backward as a sign.
2:206
如此,從前為希西家的緣故,日頭倒退;後來為基督的緣故,日頭卻昏暗了;
Then, for Hezekiah's sake the sun turned back, but for Christ's sake the sun was eclipsed;
2:207
He did not turn back, but failed away; and by this he showed the difference between the two, namely Hezekiah and Jesus.
2:208
希西家尚且能使神的判決得以撤回;
And the one prevailed to undo a sentence of God;
2:209
難道耶穌不賜下罪的赦免嗎?要回轉,為自己歎息哀痛;關上門禱告,好叫你得赦免,叫祂為你除去那焚燒的火焰;
and shall Jesus not grant forgiveness of sins? Turn, and groan over yourself; shut the door and pray, that you may be forgiven, that He may take away from you the searing flames;
2:210
for confession has power to quench even fire, it has power even to tame lions.
2:211
你若不信,就想想哈拿尼雅和他同伴所遭遇的;
But if you disbelieve, consider what befell Hananiah and his companions;
2:212
what springs did they pour out? How many measures of water could quench the flame that rose forty-nine cubits high? But where the flame mounted up but a little, there faith was poured out like a river, and there they spoke the antidote of their evils:
2:213
『主啊,你在我們所遭遇的一切事上都是公義的;
'You are righteous, O Lord, in all that You have done to us;
2:214
for we have sinned and committed iniquity.'
2:215
And their repentance undid the flames.
2:216
If you disbelieve that repentance can quench the fire of Gehenna, learn it from what happened to Hananiah and his companions.
2:217
But perhaps one of the keen listeners will say:
2:218
'God justly delivered them at that time, because they refused to worship idols; God gave them the power.'
2:219
Since this objection has been raised, I now proceed to another example of repentance.
2:220
你對尼布甲尼撒持甚麼看法?你豈沒有從聖經聽見,他嗜血、兇暴、性情如獅子?你豈沒有聽見,他把列王的骸骨從墳墓中掘出暴露於光天化日之下?你豈沒有聽見,他擄掠了百姓?你豈沒有聽見,他使那王眼見自己的兒女被殺,然後又剜了那王的雙眼?你豈沒有聽見,他打碎了基路伯——我不是指屬靈的那些,斷然不是,人哪,你不可如此以為,乃是指雕刻的那些;
What opinion do you hold concerning Nebuchadnezzar? Have you not heard from the Scriptures that he was bloodthirsty, savage, with a lion-like disposition? Have you not heard that he brought the bones of kings out of their tombs into the light? Have you not heard that he led the people into captivity? Have you not heard that he blinded the eyes of the king after he had watched his children slaughtered before him? Have you not heard that he shattered the Cherubim—I do not mean the spiritual ones, far from it, do not so suppose, O man, but the carved ones;
2:221
並且那施恩座,神曾在其中發聲說話之處;
and the mercy-seat, over the midst of which God spoke with a voice;
2:222
他踐踏了那聖所的幔子;
he trampled underfoot the veil of the sanctuary;
2:223
他取了那香壇,搬到偶像的廟裏;
he took the altar of incense and carried it off to an idol's temple;
2:224
他奪去了一切的供物;
he carried away all the offerings;
2:225
he burned the temple to its foundations.
2:226
他該受多少刑罰——因他殺戮列王,因他焚燒聖物,因他擄掠百姓,因他將聖殿的器皿放在偶像廟中?那麼他豈不該受千萬次的死?你已看見他罪惡之大;
Of how many punishments was he worthy—for slaying kings, for burning the holy things, for taking the people captive, for placing the sacred vessels within idol-temples? Was he not then worthy of countless deaths? You have seen the magnitude of his evils;
2:227
come now to the loving-kindness of God.
2:228
他變成了野獸,住在曠野,受了鞭打,為要得救;
He was turned into a beast, he dwelt in the wilderness, he was scourged that he might be saved;
2:229
因為他曾是掠奪聖民的人;
for he had been a plunderer of the saints;
2:230
因為他是獅子,又抓又吼;
for he was a lion, seizing and roaring;
2:231
因為他是畜類,不認得那將國賜給他的主;
for he was a brute beast, not knowing the One who had given him the kingdom;
2:232
他的身體被天上的露水沾濕;
his body was drenched by the dew;
2:233
because, foreseeing the fire that was to be quenched by the dew, he had not believed.
2:234
And what came to pass? 'After this,' he says, 'I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to heaven, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and glorified Him who lives forever.'
2:235
Since therefore he acknowledged the Most High, and sent up thanksgivings to God, and came to repentance for what he had done, and recognized his own weakness,
2:236
then God restored to him the honor of the kingdom.
2:237
那麼怎麼樣呢?尼布甲尼撒行了這樣的事而後認罪,神尚且賜給他赦免與國度;
What then? To Nebuchadnezzar, who had committed such deeds and then confessed, God gave pardon and the kingdom;
2:238
and will He not grant to you, when you repent, forgiveness of sins and the kingdom of heaven, if you live worthily? The Lord is loving toward man and quick to pardon, but slow to punish.
2:239
Therefore do not despair of your own salvation.
2:240
彼得,使徒中的首領與領班,竟在一個小使女面前三次否認了主;
Peter, the chief and foremost of the apostles, before a little servant-girl denied the Lord three times;
2:241
but having repented, he wept bitterly.
2:242
And his weeping showed forth heartfelt repentance; and on this account he not only received forgiveness for his denial, but also kept the apostolic dignity unforfeited.
2:243
弟兄們,我們既有許多犯罪、悔改而得救之人的榜樣,你們自己也當甘心向主認罪;
Having therefore, brethren, many examples of those who sinned and repented and were saved, do you also readily confess to the Lord;
2:244
好叫你們既得從前罪愆的赦免,又配得那屬天的恩賜,並與眾聖徒一同承受那屬天的國度;
that you may both receive pardon for your former sins, and be counted worthy of the heavenly gift, and inherit the heavenly kingdom together with all the saints;
2:245
in Christ Jesus, to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.
