And a reading from the Epistle to the Colossians:
4:2
'See to it that no one carries you off as spoil through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world,' and what follows.
4:3
邪惡模倣美德,稗子勉強要被當作麥子;
Vice imitates virtue, and the tare forces itself to be reckoned as wheat;
4:4
in form indeed being made like to the wheat, but by its taste being exposed by those who can discern.
4:5
魔鬼也裝作光明的天使,並非為要回到他從前所在之處;
And the Devil transforms himself into an angel of light, not in order to return to where he once was;
4:6
[for, like an anvil, having gained a heart that cannot be beaten soft, he henceforth has an unrepentant purpose;] but that he may enwrap those who live the angelic life in the darkness of blindness and in the plague-like state of unbelief.
4:7
有許多狼披著羊的外衣四處游行,固然有羊的外衣,卻沒有羊的爪牙;
Many wolves go about in sheep's clothing, having indeed the clothing of sheep, but not also the claws and the teeth;
4:8
but, wrapped about with the tame hide and by their guise deceiving the innocent, they pour out from their teeth the corrupting venom of impiety.
4:9
所以我們需要屬神的恩典,需要清醒的心思和看得見的眼睛;
There is need, therefore, of divine grace for us, and of a sober mind and of seeing eyes;
4:10
免得我們把稗子當作麥子喫了,出於無知而受損害;
that we may neither, eating the tare as wheat, be harmed out of ignorance;
4:11
免得我們把狼當作羊,反被獵捕;
nor, supposing the wolf to be a sheep, be hunted down;
4:12
nor, suspecting the destroying Devil to be a good angel, be swallowed up.
4:13
For he goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, according to the Scripture.
4:14
For this reason the Church admonishes, for this reason these present schools of instruction exist, for this reason the readings are given.
4:15
For the manner of true religion consists of these two things: pious doctrines, and good actions.
4:16
教義若沒有善行,神不悅納;
And neither are the doctrines, apart from good works, acceptable to God;
4:17
nor does God accept works performed without pious doctrines.
4:18
For what profit is there in knowing well the doctrines concerning God,
4:19
卻可恥地犯姦淫,又有甚麼益處呢?反過來說,人若美善地持守貞潔,卻不敬虔地褻瀆,又有甚麼益處呢?所以那教義的學習乃是極大的產業;
and yet committing fornication shamefully? And again, what profit is there in being chaste in a good way, and blaspheming impiously? Most great therefore is the possession—the learning of the doctrines;
4:20
and there is need of a sober soul, since many are those who carry off as spoil, through philosophy and empty deceit.
4:21
一面,希臘人藉著他們的善辯把人拉走;
And the Greeks, on the one hand, draw men down through their eloquence;
4:22
for 'honey drops from the lips of a harlot woman;'
4:23
另一面,那些受割禮的人藉著聖經欺哄那來就近他們的人,把聖經惡意地曲解;
and those of the circumcision, on the other, deceive those who come to them through the divine Scriptures, which they wickedly misinterpret;
4:24
studying from childhood until old age, and growing old in ignorance.
4:25
異端的子孫藉著好聽的話和善辯,欺哄無邪之人的心;
And the children of the heretics deceive the hearts of the innocent through their fair speech and eloquence;
4:26
as with honey, covering over with the name of Christ the venomous matter of their impious doctrines.
4:27
Concerning all of whom together the Lord says:
4:28
'See to it that no one leads you astray.'
4:29
For this reason the teaching of the Faith, and the expositions upon it, are given.
4:30
但在傳授信經以先,我以為現今將那些必要的教義作一簡短的撮要,是合宜的;
But before the delivering of the Faith, it seems good to me now to make use of a brief summary of the necessary doctrines;
4:31
lest the multitude of the things to be said, and the intervening interval of all the days of the holy season of forty days, should produce forgetfulness in those among you who are simpler in mind.
4:32
But that, having now sown the seeds summarily, we may not forget the same things when they are afterward cultivated more fully.
4:33
願在座之人中那些習性較成熟、心竅習練純熟、能分辨好歹的人,容忍聽那較淺顯之事和如奶之入門教導;
But let those of those present who are more perfect in habit, and who already have their faculties exercised for the discernment of good and evil, bear with hearing more elementary things and the milk-like introduction;
4:34
好叫那些需要慕道教導的人同時得益處;
that at the same time both those who have need of catechetical instruction may be benefited;
4:35
and those who have the knowledge may have the memory of the things they already know beforehand rekindled.
4:36
那麼,首先要將關乎神的教義立為根基,安在你們魂裏;
First, then, let the doctrine concerning God be laid as a foundation in your soul;
4:37
就是神是獨一的,未受生的,無始的,不變的,不改的;
namely, that God is one only, unbegotten, without beginning, unchangeable, unalterable;
4:38
既非被別者所生,也沒有別者承接祂的生命;
neither begotten by another, nor having another as the successor of His life;
4:39
既非在時間中開始活著,也永不會終結;
and neither beginning to live in time, nor ever coming to an end;
4:40
並且祂是又良善又公義的;
and that He is both good and just;
4:41
so that if ever you should hear a heretic saying that the just one is another and the good one is another, you may at once, being reminded, recognize the venom of the heresy.
4:42
因為有些人竟敢不敬虔地在他們的講說中把獨一的神分割;
For some have dared impiously to divide in their teaching the one God;
4:43
and some have said that the maker and master of the soul is one, and the maker of bodies is another, teaching at once foolishly and impiously.
4:44
For how can one man become the slave of two masters, when the Lord says in the Gospels:
4:45
'No one can serve two masters'? There is therefore one God only, the Maker both of souls and of bodies.
4:46
There is one Creator of heaven and earth, the Maker both of angels and of archangels.
4:47
He who is the Creator of many, but the Father of one only before the ages, of the one only-begotten Son of His, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also He made all things, both the visible and the invisible.
4:48
這位我們主耶穌基督的父,不被限制在任何地方,也不小於諸天;
This Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is not circumscribed in any place, nor is He less than heaven;
4:49
But the heavens are the works of His fingers, and the whole earth is held in His hand.
4:50
He is in all things, and beyond all things.
4:51
你不可以為祂比太陽小,或僅僅比太陽更明亮,或與太陽相等;
Do not suppose Him to be smaller than the sun, or merely [more brilliant] than it, or equal to it;
4:52
for He who fashioned the sun must Himself first be far more incomparable, greater and more brilliant.
4:53
祂預知將來的事,又比萬有更有能力;
He foreknows the things that are to come, and is mightier than all;
4:54
祂知道一切,並隨己意而行;
knowing all things and doing as He wills;
4:55
祂不受事物連鎖的支配,不受生滅、機運或命運的束縛;
not subject to sequences of events, nor to becoming, nor to chance, nor to fate;
4:56
在凡事上全備,並均等地擁有各樣德行的全貌;
perfect in all things, and possessing every form of virtue in equal measure;
4:57
既不減少,也不增加,乃是永遠如一、始終不變;
neither diminishing nor increasing, but ever remaining the same and in the same manner;
4:58
having prepared punishment for sinners, and crowns for the righteous.
4:59
既然許多人以各樣方式偏離了獨一的神;
Since therefore many have wandered away from the one God in various ways;
4:60
有些人把太陽當作神,以致太陽落下、在夜間的時候,他們便成了無神之人;
and some have deified the sun, so that when the sun sets, during the night they remain without a god;
4:61
另有些人把月亮當作神,以致白晝時他們便沒有神;
and others the moon, so that by day they have no god;
4:62
又有些人把世界其餘的部分當作神;
and others the remaining parts of the world;
4:63
and some, mad for women, set up the image of a naked woman on high, calling it Aphrodite,
4:64
藉著那看得見的像,敬拜自己的情慾;
and worshipped their own passion through the visible image;
4:65
另有些人被黃金的光彩所眩惑,便把黃金和其餘的物質當作神;
and others, dazzled by the brilliance of gold, deified it and the rest of material things;
4:66
But if anyone first lays in his heart the doctrine of the monarchy of God and is persuaded of it, he cuts off at once the whole corruption of the evils of idolatry and of the error of the heretics.
4:67
This therefore lay first in your soul as the doctrine of godliness, through faith.
4:68
你也要信神的兒子,那獨一無二的,我們的主耶穌基督;
And believe also in the Son of God, the one and only, our Lord Jesus Christ;
4:69
祂是從神所生的神,從生命所生的生命,從光所生的光,凡事與生祂者相似;
begotten God of God, begotten Life of Life, begotten Light of Light, in all things like to Him who begat Him;
4:70
who did not acquire His being in time, but before all the ages was begotten of the Father eternally and incomprehensibly.
4:71
祂是神的智慧、神的能力,並那有本體的公義;
The Wisdom of God and the Power, and the subsistent Righteousness;
4:72
who sits at the right hand of the Father before all the ages.
4:73
祂並非如有些人所想的,乃是在受難之後才得加冕,彷彿因祂的忍耐而從神得了右邊的寶座;
For not, as some have thought, was He crowned after His passion and so received the throne at the right hand from God as a reward for His endurance;
4:74
乃是從祂存在之時起——而祂是永遠由父所生的——祂就擁有那君王的尊位;
but from the very moment that He is—[and He is begotten of the Father always]—He possesses the royal dignity;
4:75
sitting together with the Father, being God and Wisdom and Power, as has been said.
4:76
祂與父同作王,並藉著父作了萬有的創造者;
Reigning together with the Father, and the Maker of all things through the Father;
4:77
[but] lacking nothing in the dignity of Godhead, and knowing Him who begat Him, even as He is known by Him who begat Him.
4:78
簡言之,你要記得福音書上所記的;
And, to speak briefly, remember what is written in the Gospels;
4:79
就是:除了父,沒有人認識子;
that no one fully knows the Son, except the Father;
4:80
neither does anyone fully know the Father, except the Son.
4:81
你既不可把子與父分隔,也不可混合二者而相信一種「子即是父」的說法。倒要相信,獨一的神有一位獨生的子,祂在萬世之前就是神,就是道(聖言);
And neither alienate the Son from the Father, nor by making a confusion believe in a Son-Fatherhood. But believe that of the one God there is one only-begotten Son, who before all the ages is God the Word;
4:82
這道並非發聲說出、消散於空氣中的,也不像那些沒有實體的言語;
the Word, not uttered and dissolved into the air, nor likened to insubstantial words;
4:83
but the Word, the Son, Maker of rational beings, the Word who hears the Father and Himself speaks.
4:84
至於這些事,到了時候,神若准許,我們必更詳盡地講論;
And concerning these matters, in due time, if God grants it, we shall speak more fully;
4:85
for we do not forget our proposal, that we are now making summary introductions to the faith.
4:86
你要相信,這位神的獨生子,為我們的罪從天降到地上,取了與我們同樣會受苦的這人性,由聖潔的童女並聖靈而生;
And believe that this only-begotten Son of God, for our sins came down from heaven upon the earth, taking upon Himself this humanity of like passions with us, and being born of a holy virgin and the Holy Spirit;
4:87
祂成為人,不是憑著假象與幻影,乃是真實的;
the incarnation having come about not in semblance and appearance, but in truth;
4:88
祂不是像水流經過管道那樣穿過童女,乃是真實地由她成了肉身,並真實地受了乳養;
nor passing through the virgin as through a channel, but being truly made flesh of her and truly nourished with milk;
4:89
[truly eating as we eat, and truly drinking as we drink.]
4:90
For if the incarnation were a phantom, then salvation too would be a phantom.
4:91
基督有雙重:在所看得見的,祂是人;在所看不見的,祂是神;
Christ was twofold: man in what was visible, but God in what was not visible;
4:92
祂像人那樣真實地進食,正如我們一樣,因為祂有與我們同樣會受苦的肉體;
eating as a man truly like us, for He had the like-passioned nature of flesh as we do;
4:93
祂卻又像神那樣,用五個餅餵飽了五千人;
but feeding the five thousand from five loaves as God;
4:94
祂像人那樣真實地死了,卻又像神那樣,叫死了四天的人復活;
dying as a man truly, but raising as God the dead man four days entombed;
4:95
sleeping in the boat truly as a man, and walking upon the waters as God.
4:96
This One was truly crucified for our sins.
4:97
For even if you should wish to deny it, the place itself, here in view, refutes you—this blessed Golgotha, where now, on account of Him who was crucified upon it, we are gathered together.
4:98
And the whole world, moreover, has now been filled, piece by piece, with the wood of the cross.
4:99
And He was crucified not for His own sins, but in order that we might be set free from our own sins.
4:100
那時祂確實被人藐視,又像人那樣被打;
And He was indeed despised by men at that time and was struck as a man;
4:101
but He was recognized by creation to be God.
4:102
For the sun, seeing its Master dishonoured, grew faint and trembled, not bearing the sight.
4:103
祂像人那樣,真實地被安放在磐石鑿成的墳墓裡;
He was laid in a tomb of rock truly as a man;
4:104
but the rocks were torn asunder in fear because of Him.
4:105
He descended into the regions beneath the earth, that from there too He might redeem the righteous.
4:106
For tell me—would you have wished the living to enjoy the grace, and that too when most of them are not [worthy],
4:107
卻不讓那些從亞當以來長久被囚禁的人,最終得著自由麼?先知以賽亞曾大聲宣告了許多關於祂的事;
but that those shut up from Adam's time through long ages should not at last attain to freedom? Isaiah the prophet proclaimed so many things concerning Him with a great voice;
4:108
would you not have wished that the King should descend and redeem the herald? David was there, and Samuel, and all the prophets, and John himself, who said through those he sent:
4:109
Are you the One who is to come, or do we look for another? Would you not have wished that He should descend and redeem such ones? ON THE RESURRECTION.
4:110
But He who descended into the regions beneath the earth ascended again; and Jesus who was buried truly rose again on the third day.
4:111
And if ever the Jews should mock you, answer them quickly, asking thus:
4:112
約拿三天後從大魚腹中出來;基督在地中三天後豈不也已復活了麼?有死人摸著以利沙的骸骨就復活了;
Jonah came forth from the whale after three days; and has not Christ then, after three days, been raised from the earth? A dead man, touching the bones of Elisha, was raised;
4:113
那造人的,藉著父的能力,豈不更容易得多地復活麼?所以祂確實復活了;
and shall not the Maker of men, by the power of the Father, all the more easily be raised? He rose, therefore, truly;
4:114
and having risen, He again appeared to the disciples.
4:115
And the witnesses of His resurrection were the twelve disciples, who bore witness not with flattering words, but contended even unto tortures and deaths concerning the true resurrection.
4:116
再者,照著聖經所說,憑兩三個見證人的口,句句都要定準;
Then, at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established, according to the Scripture;
4:117
but twelve bear witness to the resurrection of Christ; and do you still disbelieve the resurrection? ON THE ASCENSION.
4:118
And Jesus, having completed the course of endurance and redeemed men from their sins, ascended again into the heavens, a cloud receiving Him.
4:119
And angels stood by as He ascended, and apostles beheld it.
4:120
But if anyone disbelieves what is said, let him believe the very power of the things now seen.
4:121
一切君王死的時候,都隨著生命一同熄滅了他們的權勢;
All kings, when they die, extinguish their power together with their life;
4:122
but Christ, though crucified, is worshipped by the whole inhabited world.
4:123
We proclaim the Crucified, and demons now tremble.
4:124
歷世以來有許多人被釘十字架;
Many have been crucified through the ages;
4:125
但何曾有人因呼求別的被釘十字架者之名,就把鬼魔趕走呢?所以我們不要以基督的十字架為恥;
but at the invocation of which other crucified one were demons ever driven away? Let us not, then, be ashamed of the cross of Christ;
4:126
縱然別人隱藏它,你卻要公然在額上為自己劃這記號;
but even if another conceals it, do you openly seal yourself upon your forehead;
4:127
that the demons, seeing the royal sign, may flee far off trembling.
4:128
你吃喝的時候要劃這記號;
Make this sign when eating and drinking;
4:129
坐下、躺臥、起身、說話、行走時也要;
sitting, lying down, rising, speaking, walking;
4:130
in a word, in every undertaking.
4:131
For He who was crucified here is on high in the heavens.
4:132
因為祂若被釘、被葬之後,仍留在墳墓裡,我們就有可羞愧的理由了;
For if, having been crucified and buried, He had remained in the tomb, we would have cause to be ashamed;
4:133
but now, He who was crucified on this Golgotha has ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives lying to the east.
4:134
For from here, having descended into Hades and ascended again to us, He ascended from us again into heaven, the Father addressing Him and saying:
4:135
Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.
4:136
This Jesus, the Christ who ascended, is coming again from the heavens, not from the earth.
4:137
since many antichrists are now about to come from the earth.
4:138
因為正如你所見,已經有許多人開始說:『我是基督』;
For already, as you have observed, many have begun to say, 'I am the Christ';
4:139
and at last the abomination of desolation is about to come, ascribing to itself the false title of Christ.
4:140
但你要等候那真基督,神的獨生子,祂不再從地上來,乃從諸天而來;
But do you look for the true Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, no longer coming from the earth, but from the heavens;
4:141
appearing to all brighter than any lightning and flash of light, escorted by angels, that He may judge the living and the dead, and reign a heavenly kingdom, eternal and without end.
4:142
For make yourself secure for me in this also, since there are many who say that there is an end to the kingdom of Christ.
4:143
你也要信聖靈,並要持守關於祂正確的認識;
Believe also in the Holy Spirit, and hold the right knowledge concerning Him;
4:144
since there are many who are estranged from the Holy Spirit, who teach blasphemous things concerning Him.
4:145
但你要明白,這聖靈是一位,不可分割,具有多樣的大能;
But do you learn that this Holy Spirit is one, indivisible, of manifold power;
4:146
祂運行多樣的工作,自己卻不被分開;
working many things, yet Himself not being divided;
4:147
祂知道一切奧祕,參透萬事,連神深奧的事也參透;
who knows the mysteries, who searches all things, even the deep things of God;
4:148
祂曾以鴿子的形狀降在基督身上;
who descended upon Christ in the form of a dove;
4:149
祂曾在律法和先知中運行;
who wrought in the law and the prophets;
4:150
who even now, at the time of baptism, seals your soul.
4:151
凡屬靈智的受造之物,也都需要祂以致成聖;
Of whom every intelligible nature also has need for sanctification;
4:152
人若膽敢褻瀆祂,無論今世來世,總不得赦免;
against whom if anyone should dare to blaspheme, he has no forgiveness, neither in this age nor in the age to come;
4:153
who is honoured with the honour of the same dignity together with the Father and the Son, of whom thrones and dominions, principalities and powers also have need.
4:154
因為神只有一位,就是基督的父;
For there is one God, the Father of Christ;
4:155
and one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of the one God, and one Holy Spirit, who sanctifies and deifies all things, who spoke in the law and the prophets, in both the old and the new covenant.
4:156
Keep this seal in your mind always, which has now been told you in summary, by way of a brief touch.
4:157
But if the Lord grants it, it shall be told with proof from the Scriptures, according to our ability.
4:158
因為論到信仰那神聖的奧祕,連最微小的事,也不可離了神聖的聖經而傳授;
For concerning the divine and holy mysteries of the Faith, not even the slightest thing ought to be handed down apart from the divine Scriptures;
4:159
and we must not be carried away simply by plausibilities and the contrivances of arguments.
4:160
就連我這對你講說這些事的人,你也不可僅憑我的話就相信;
Neither believe even me, who tell you these things, simply on my word;
4:161
unless you receive proof of the things proclaimed from the divine Scriptures.
4:162
For this salvation of our faith is not from clever speech, but from the proof of the divine Scriptures.
4:163
And after the knowledge of this venerable and glorious and all-holy faith, come now to know yourself also, who you are.
4:164
你乃是被造成雙重的人,由靈魂與身體所組成;
That you are constituted a twofold man, composed of both soul and body;
4:165
and that, as was said a little before, the same God is the Maker both of the soul and of the body.
4:166
你要曉得你有一個有自主之權的靈魂,是神最美的工作,照著造它者的形像而造;
And know that you have a soul self-determining, the most beautiful work of God, after the image of Him who made it;
4:167
它是不朽的,因為那賜它不朽的神;
immortal, on account of God who makes it immortal;
4:168
它是有理性、不能朽壞的活物,因為那將這些賜給它的主;
a rational, incorruptible living being, on account of Him who bestowed these things;
4:169
having authority to do what it wills.
4:170
For you do not sin by birth, nor do you fornicate by chance, nor, as some prattle, do the conjunctions of the stars compel you to give yourself over to licentious deeds.
4:171
Why, fleeing to confess your own evils, do you ascribe the cause to the blameless stars? Heed astrologers no longer.
4:172
For concerning these the divine Scripture says:
4:173
願那些觀天象的占星家起來拯救你;
Let the astrologers of heaven stand up and save you;
4:174
Behold, all of them shall be burned up like stubble upon the fire, and they shall not deliver their own soul from the flame.
4:175
你也要明白這事:靈魂在來到這世界以前,並沒有犯過甚麼罪;
And learn this also, that before the soul came into this world, it had committed no sin;
4:176
but having come sinless, we now sin by deliberate choice.
4:177
你不可聽人錯解那句話:『我所不願意的,我倒去作』;
Do not let anyone wrongly interpret to you the passage, 'But what I do not will, this I do';
4:178
but remember Him who says:
4:179
你們若情願聽從我,就必喫地上的美物;
If you are willing and hearken to Me, you shall eat the good things of the land;
4:180
but if you are not willing, nor hearken to Me, the sword shall devour you, and so forth.
4:181
你們從前怎樣把自己的肢體獻給污穢、給不法作奴僕,以致於不法;
Just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness;
4:182
如今也要照樣把自己的肢體獻給義作奴僕,以致於成聖;
so now present your members as slaves to righteousness unto sanctification;
4:183
and remember the Scripture that says:
4:184
他們既然不以認識神為美;
Just as they did not see fit to have God in their knowledge;
4:185
並且神的事情,凡可知的,原顯明在他們心裡;又說,他們閉上了自己的眼睛;
and that, what may be known of God is manifest in them; and that, they have closed their eyes;
4:186
and God again charging them and saying:
4:187
我栽了你,是上等的葡萄樹,全然是真種;
But I planted you as a fruitful vine, wholly true;
4:188
你怎麼向我變為壞了的、外邦的葡萄樹呢?靈魂是不朽的;
how then have you turned into bitterness, the strange vine? The soul is immortal;
4:189
無論男女,眾人的靈魂都是一樣的;
and all souls, both of men and of women, are alike;
4:190
for only the members of the body are distinguished.
4:191
並不是有一等靈魂生來就犯罪,另有一等靈魂生來就行義;
There is not one order of souls by nature sinning, and an order of souls by nature acting righteously;
4:192
but both are by deliberate choice, the substance of souls being of one kind and alike in all.
4:193
我確知我說了許多話,時間如今也已經很長了;
I know indeed that I am saying many things, and that the time is now already long;
4:194
但有甚麼比救恩更該寶愛的呢?你豈不願勞苦一番,得著抵擋異端的資糧麼?你豈不願知道道路上的歧途,免得因無知而墜落懸崖麼?若教師們以你學會這些為不小的收益;
but what is more to be preferred than salvation? Do you not wish, by toiling, to receive provisions against the heretics? Do you not wish to know the by-ways of the road, that you may not be cast down some precipice through ignorance? If the teachers reckon it no small gain that you should learn these things;
4:195
σὺ μανθάνων, ἆρα οὐκ ὀφείλεις ἡδέως δέχεσθαι τῶν λεγομένων τὸ πλῆθος;
you who are learning, ought you not gladly to receive the abundance of what is said?
4:196
靈魂是有自主之權的;
The soul is self-determining;
4:197
and the devil is able indeed to suggest, but to compel against one's choice he has not the authority.
4:198
他把淫念寫在你心裡;
He inscribes in you a thought of fornication;
4:199
因為你若是出於必然而行淫,神為何預備了火獄(地獄)呢?你若是生來如此、而非出於選擇而行義,神又為何預備了那難以言喻的冠冕呢?綿羊是溫順的,卻從未因牠的溫順得過冠冕;
For if you fornicated of necessity, why then did God prepare Gehenna? If you acted righteously by nature, not by choice, why then did God prepare crowns unspeakable? The sheep is gentle, but it was never crowned for its gentleness;
4:200
since gentleness belongs to it not from choice, but from nature.
4:201
親愛的,你已經就目前所能領會的,認識了關於靈魂的事;
You have come to know, beloved, so far as is possible for now, the things concerning the soul;
4:202
receive now, according to your ability, also the discourse concerning your body.
4:203
Do not tolerate any of those who say that this body is alien to God.
4:204
For those who believe the body to be [something] alien [to God], [and] who use it as [the soul dwelling] in an alien vessel, do thereby also readily abuse it for fornications.
4:205
And what fault have they found with this marvellous body? In what does it fall short of comeliness? What part of its construction is not skilfully wrought? Ought they not to have considered the most brilliant arrangement of the eyes? And how the ears, set obliquely, receive the hearing unimpeded? And how the sense of smell is discerning of vapours and able to perceive exhalations?
4:206
And how the tongue is the servant of two functions, of the faculty of taste and of the activity of speech? How the lung, lying in hidden places, has the ceaseless breathing of the air? Who set the beat of the heart unbroken? Who divided it into so many veins and arteries? Who wisely fastened the bones to the sinews? Who, giving part of the food to the sustaining of the body and dividing part for decent elimination, hid away the unseemly members in the more decent places? Who, when the nature of men was about to fail, by a humble union established it unceasingly? Do not tell me that the body is the cause of sin.
4:207
For if the body is the cause of sin, why does a dead man not sin? Place a sword in the right hand of one who has just died, and no murder takes place.
4:208
Let beauties of every kind pass before a young man just deceased, and no desire of fornication arises.
4:209
Why? Because the body does not sin of itself, but the soul through the body.
4:210
The body is an instrument, and as it were the garment and robe of the soul.
4:211
它若被靈魂交付給淫亂,就成為污穢的;
And if it be given over by the soul to fornication, it becomes unclean;
4:212
but if it dwells together with a holy soul, it becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit.
4:213
It is not I who say these things, but Paul the Apostle has said, 'Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you?' Spare your body, therefore, as being a temple of the Holy Spirit.
4:214
不要在淫亂中玷污你的肉身;
Do not defile your flesh in fornications;
4:215
do not pollute this your most beautiful robe.
4:216
你若真的污穢了它,如今就藉著悔改把它洗淨;
And if you have indeed polluted it, wash it clean now through repentance;
4:217
至於論貞潔的話,要首先讓修道者與童身者這一等人聽——他們是在世上活出與天使一樣生活的人;
And as for the discourse on chastity, let the order of monks and of virgins first hear it—those who in the world achieve the angelic life;
4:218
[and after them also the rest of the people of the Church.]
4:219
弟兄們,有極大的冠冕為你們存留;
A great crown lies in store for you, brethren;
4:220
do not exchange a great worth for a small pleasure.
4:221
Hear the Apostle saying:
4:222
Let there be no fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his own birthright.
4:223
Having now been enrolled in the angelic books because of your resolve of chastity, see that you are not again blotted out because of the work of fornication.
4:224
Nor again, while achieving chastity, be puffed up against those who are of lower estate in marriage.
4:225
For marriage is honourable and the bed undefiled, as the Apostle says.
4:226
And you who have purity—were you not born of those who married? Do not, because you possess a treasure of gold, reject silver.
4:227
但那些在婚姻中合法地使用婚姻的人,也要有美好的盼望;
But let those also be of good hope who lawfully use marriage in marriage;
4:228
就是那些使婚姻合於規範,不因無節制的放任而使之變為淫蕩的人;
those who make marriage lawful, and do not make it licentious through immoderate liberty;
4:229
就是那些知道有節制的時候,好叫自己專心禱告的人;
those who know the seasons of abstinence, that they may give themselves to prayer;
4:230
就是那些在聚會中穿著潔淨的衣服,把純淨之物獻到教會裡的人;
those who, with clean garments, bring pure offerings in the assemblies into the church;
4:231
those who have come to marriage for the sake of begetting children, and not for the sake of pleasure-seeking.
4:232
And let those who have married once not reject those who have entered into a second marriage.
4:233
因為節制固然是美善而可佩的;
For self-control is indeed a good thing and admirable;
4:234
but it is also pardonable to enter into a second marriage, lest the weak should fornicate.
4:235
使徒說,他們若常像我就好;
For it is good for them if they remain even as I, says the Apostle;
4:236
倘若他們不能自禁,就可以嫁娶;
but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry;
4:237
for it is better to marry than to burn.
4:238
But let all the rest be banished far off—fornication, adultery, and every kind of licentiousness.
4:239
And let the body be kept pure for the Lord, that the Lord also may look upon the body.
4:240
要用食物餵養身體,使它得以存活、毫無攔阻地服事;
And let the body be nourished with food, that it may live and serve unhindered;
4:241
yet not so that it be given over to luxuries.
4:242
論到食物,也要以這些為你的準則;
And concerning foods also, let these be your doctrines;
4:243
since many stumble also concerning meats.
4:244
有些人毫不分辨地去喫祭過偶像之物;
For some approach things sacrificed to idols indifferently;
4:245
while others practise abstinence, but condemn those who eat.
4:246
And in various ways the soul of some is defiled in the matter of meats, since they are ignorant of the beneficial reasons for eating and for not eating.
4:247
我們禁食,戒絕酒肉,並非把它們當作可憎之物而恨惡,乃是盼望那賞賜;
For we fast, abstaining from wine and meats, not as hating them as abominations, but looking for the reward;
4:248
好叫我們輕看屬感官的事物,得以享受那屬靈、屬智的筵席;
that, disregarding the things of sense, we may enjoy the spiritual and intelligible table;
4:249
and that, sowing now in tears, we may reap in rejoicing in the age to come.
4:250
Do not, then, despise those who eat and who partake on account of the weakness of their bodies.
4:251
也不要責備那些因胃口和屢次患病而用一點酒的人;
Neither blame those who use a little wine on account of the stomach and their frequent infirmities;
4:252
and do not condemn them as sinners.
4:253
也不要把肉類當作外來之物而恨惡;
Neither hate meats as though they were alien things;
4:254
for the Apostle knows certain such persons, saying:
4:255
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful.
4:256
所以你戒絕這些的時候,不要當作可憎之物而戒絕,因為這樣你並無賞賜;
Abstaining therefore from these, do not abstain as from abominable things, since you have no reward;
4:257
but disdain them as being good, on account of the intelligible things set before you that are far better.
4:258
Make your soul secure, that you never eat anything of the things offered to idols.
4:259
For concerning these foods, not to me only now, but already to the apostles too and to James the bishop of this church, there was earnest concern.
4:260
And the apostles and the elders write a catholic epistle to all the nations, first to abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and then also from blood and from what is strangled.
4:261
因為許多人像野獸一般、又活得像狗,舔食血,效法那最兇猛野獸的樣式;
For many of men, being beast-like and living after the manner of dogs, lap up the blood, imitating the way of the most savage beasts;
4:262
and they devour without restraint the things strangled.
4:263
But you, the servant of Christ, in eating, have a care to eat with reverence.
4:264
And concerning foods, enough.
4:265
你的衣著要樸素,穿著不是為了妝飾,乃是為了必需的遮蔽;
Let your clothing be plain, set on not for adornment, but for necessary covering;
4:266
不是要叫你變得柔弱,乃是叫你在冬天得暖,並遮蓋身體不雅之處;
not that you may be made soft, but that in winter you may be warmed, and may cover the unseemliness of the body;
4:267
lest, under pretext of covering the unseemliness, you fall into another unseemliness with extravagant garments.
4:268
Spare, I beseech you, this body, and know that you shall be raised from the dead, to be judged together with this body.
4:269
倘若有甚麼不信的念頭悄悄臨到你,彷彿這事是不可能的;
But if any word of unbelief steals in upon you, as though the matter were impossible;
4:270
consider the things unseen from the things concerning yourself.
4:271
For you yourself, tell me, a hundred or more years ago—reckon where you were? And out of what most tiny
4:272
何等卑微的本質,達到如此大的身量、如此尊貴的俊美?那麼,那把無有帶到存在的,豈不能把那已經存在卻已朽壞的再次興起麼?那叫為我們撒下的麥子復活的,這麥子年年枯死;
and most lowly substance you came to so great a magnitude of stature and so great a dignity of beauty? Then, He who brought what was not into being—can He not raise up again what already is and has fallen into decay? He who raises the wheat sown for our sake, which dies year by year;
4:273
祂豈會難以使我們自己復活麼?那麥子原是為我們才復活的。你豈不見樹木如今這許多月份毫無果子、毫無葉子;
shall He then raise us ourselves, for whose sake that too was raised, with difficulty? Do you see how the trees now stand for so many months fruitless and leafless;
4:274
but, when the winter is past, they all come to life again as it were from the dead.
4:275
我們豈不更要、更容易地再次復生麼?摩西的杖照神的旨意變成了蛇那陌生的性質;
Shall we not much more, and more easily, come to life again? The rod of Moses was changed by God's will into the unfamiliar nature of a serpent;
4:276
and shall not man, who has fallen into death, be restored again to himself? Do not heed those
4:277
who say that this body is not raised.
4:278
以賽亞作見證說:『死人要復活,葬在墳墓裡的也要起來』;
And Isaiah is witness, saying, 'The dead shall arise, and those in the tombs shall be raised';
4:279
照但以理所說,又有:『睡在塵埃中的,必有許多復醒』;
and, 'Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall arise', according to Daniel;
4:280
these to eternal life, and these to eternal shame.
4:281
然而復活乃是眾人都有的;
But the rising again belongs to all men;
4:282
yet the resurrection is not alike for all.
4:283
For we all receive eternal bodies, but not all alike.
4:284
義人得身體,是要他們存到永遠,與天使一同歡舞;
For the righteous, that abiding for ever they may dance together with the angels;
4:285
but the sinners, that they may endure the torment of their sins unto the ages.
4:286
For this reason the Lord in His loving-kindness gave beforehand the repentance of the laver, that having cast off the great mass of sins—or rather the whole burden—and having received the seal by the Holy Spirit, we might become heirs of eternal life.
4:287
But having spoken sufficiently before concerning the laver, let us now come to the remaining of the introductory lessons.
4:288
And these things the God-inspired Scriptures of both the old and the new covenant teach us.
4:289
因為兩約的神乃是一位,祂在舊約裡預先宣告了那在新約裡顯現的基督;
For there is one God of the two covenants, who in the old foretold the Christ who appeared in the new;
4:290
who through the law and the prophets led us as by a tutor unto Christ.
4:291
因為在那信還未來以先,我們被看守在律法之下;
For before faith came, we were kept under the law;
4:292
and the law became our tutor unto Christ.
4:293
And if ever you hear any of the heretics blaspheming the law or the prophets, answer back with the saving voice, saying:
4:294
Jesus did not come to destroy the law, but to fulfil it.
4:295
And learn diligently and from the Church, which are the books of the old covenant, and which of the new.
4:296
And read me none of the apocryphal books.
4:297
For why, not knowing the things agreed upon by all, do you trouble yourself in vain over things doubtful? Read the divine Scriptures, these twenty-two books of the old covenant, which were translated by the seventy-two Interpreters.
4:298
因為馬其頓王亞歷山大死後,他的國分為四個邦——就是巴比倫、馬其頓、亞細亞和埃及;
For when Alexander the king of the Macedonians had died, and the kingdom was divided into four realms—into Babylonia and Macedonia, Asia and Egypt;
4:299
那作埃及王者之一的托勒密·腓拉鐵非,是位極愛學問的王,到處蒐集書籍,他從圖書館的管理者法勒魯姆的得米丟那裡,聽聞了律法和先知那些神聖的聖經;
one of those reigning over Egypt, Ptolemy Philadelphus, who was a most learning-loving king and gathered books from everywhere, having heard from Demetrius of Phalerum, the curator of the library, concerning the divine Scriptures of the law and the prophets;
4:300
他認為遠較好的辦法,不是勉強從不甘願的人手中奪取那些書,而是寧可用禮物和友誼籠絡那些擁有書的人;
and judging it far better not to take the books by force from unwilling owners, but rather to propitiate those who possessed them with gifts and friendship;
4:301
他又曉得,凡出於勉強的,因是不甘願地交付的,往往被作了假;
and knowing that what is compelled is often falsified, being given unwillingly;
4:302
惟有出於甘心而獻上的,才是全然真實地給予的;
but that what is provided of free choice is given in all truth;
4:303
having sent very many gifts to Eleazar, then the high priest, to the temple of Jerusalem here, he caused to be sent to him, six from each tribe of the twelve tribes of Israel, for the translation.
4:304
後來他為要試驗這些書是否屬神,又疑心那些被差來的人會彼此串通;
Then, taking a test of whether or not the books were divine, and suspecting lest those who were sent should collude with one another;
4:305
in the island called Pharos, lying off Alexandria, assigning to each of the interpreters who had come a house of his own, he committed to each to translate all the Scriptures.
4:306
And when these had completed the task in seventy-two days, gathering together at one place the translations of all, which they had made in different houses without consulting one another, he found them to be in agreement not only in the meanings, but also in the very words.
4:307
因為所成就的,並不是甚麼巧辯之辭或人為詭辯的造作;
For what came about was no clever speech or contrivance of human sophistries;
4:308
but the interpretation of the divine Scriptures, which had been spoken by the Holy Spirit, was accomplished out of the Holy Spirit.
4:309
你要讀其中那二十二卷書;
Of these read the twenty-two books;
4:310
but with the apocryphal books have nothing in common.
4:311
Study earnestly these only, which we also read in the Church with confidence.
4:312
Far more prudent and reverent than you were the apostles and the ancient bishops, the leaders of the Church, who handed these down.
4:313
You then, being a child of the Church, do not
4:314
至於舊約,正如所說,你要研讀那二十二卷書;
And of the old covenant, as has been said, study the twenty-two books;
4:315
which, if you are a lover of learning, take care to remember by name as I name them.
4:316
屬律法的,乃是摩西最初的五卷書:創世記、出埃及記、利未記、民數記、申命記;
For of the law there are the first five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy;
4:317
其次是嫩的兒子約書亞記;
and next, the book of Joshua son of Nun;
4:318
and the book of Judges with Ruth, counted as the seventh.
4:319
至於其餘的歷史書,撒母耳記上、下(列王志一、二)在希伯來人中算為一卷書;
And of the remaining historical books, the first and the second of the Kingdoms are one book among the Hebrews;
4:320
and the third and the fourth likewise one.
4:321
在他們中間,歷代志上、下同樣也是一卷書;
And likewise among them the first and the second of the Chronicles are one book;
4:322
以斯拉記上、下(以斯拉記與尼希米記)也算為一卷;
and the first and the second of Esdras are reckoned as one;
4:323
and the twelfth book is Esther.
4:324
And these are the historical books.
4:325
And the poetical books are five:
4:326
Job, and the book of Psalms, and Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs, the seventeenth book.
4:327
And after these, the prophetic books are five:
4:328
十二位小先知書算為一卷,以賽亞書一卷,耶利米書連同巴錄書、耶利米哀歌和耶利米書信算為一卷;
of the twelve prophets one book, and of Isaiah one, and of Jeremiah with Baruch, and Lamentations, and the Epistle;
4:329
then Ezekiel, and that of Daniel, the twenty-second book of the old covenant.
4:330
至於新約,只有四卷福音書;
And of the new covenant, the four Gospels only;
4:331
but the rest are falsely titled and harmful.
4:332
The Manichaeans also wrote a Gospel according to Thomas, which, being tinged with the fragrance of the evangelic name, corrupts the souls of the simpler sort.
4:333
Receive also the Acts of the twelve apostles.
4:334
此外還有那七卷大公書信,就是雅各、彼得、約翰和猶大的書信;
And in addition to these, the seven catholic epistles of James, and Peter, and John, and Jude;
4:335
and as the seal of them all, and the last of the disciples, the fourteen epistles of Paul.
4:336
But let all the rest be set in a secondary place.
4:337
And whatever is not read in the churches, do not read these even by yourself, as you have heard.
4:338
And concerning these matters, so much.
4:339
你要逃避一切屬魔鬼的活動,不要聽從那龍,那背叛者,牠原本出於善的本質,卻憑自己的選擇而起了改變;
But flee every diabolical activity, and do not obey the dragon, the apostate, who from a good nature received a self-chosen change;
4:340
who is able indeed to persuade those who are willing, but to compel no one.
4:341
And give heed neither to astrologies, nor to bird-augury, nor to omens, nor to the fabulous divinations of the Greeks.
4:342
Sorcery, and enchantment, and the most lawless practices of necromancy—do not accept even so far as to hear of them.
4:343
Depart from every kind of licentiousness, being neither gluttonous nor pleasure-loving, and rising above all avarice and usury.
4:344
你不要去與外邦人聚集觀看戲樂的場面;
And do not join the heathen gatherings for spectacles;
4:345
nor ever use amulets in sicknesses.
4:346
And turn away also from all the vulgarity of frequenting taverns.
4:347
你也不要墮入撒瑪利亞人的信仰或猶太教;
And do not fall away into Samaritanism or Judaism;
4:348
for Jesus the Christ has now redeemed you.
4:349
Withdraw from every observance of sabbaths,
4:350
and from calling any of the indifferent foods common or unclean.
4:351
Above all, hate all the assemblies of the lawless heretics.
4:352
你要用禁食、禱告、施捨,以及誦讀神聖的聖言,全力堅固自己的靈魂,使你能以節制與敬虔的教義度過在肉身中所餘的年日,得以享受那一次洗禮所帶來的救恩;
And in every way fortify your own soul with fastings, prayers, almsgiving, and the readings of the divine oracles, so that, having lived the rest of your time in the flesh with self-control and godly doctrines, you may enjoy the one salvation of the laver;
4:353
如此被招募在天上的軍隊中、歸於父神,使你配得天上的冠冕;
and so, enlisted in the heavenly hosts for the Father and God, you may be counted worthy of the heavenly crowns;
4:354
in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages.
