1:1585

Ἐνταῦθα τοίνυν αἰτεῖσθαι καί ζητεῖν καί κρούειν ἐν μετανοίᾳ καί δάκρυσι προσετάγημεν, καί οὕτω ποιοῦσιν ὁ Δεσπότης ταύτην ὑπέσχετο δώσειν ἡμῖν

所以，我們是在今生受命要以悔改與眼淚祈求、尋找、叩門；主也應許要將它賜給那些如此行的人。

Here, therefore, we have been commanded to ask and to seek and to knock in repentance and tears; and to those who do so the Master promised to give it.

1:1586

Εἰ οὖν τοῦτο ποιῆσαι καί ὑπακοῦσαι τῷ Δεσπότῃ Χριστῷ οὐ θελήσομεν, ἵνα ἔτι τῷ βίῳ περιόντες σπεύσωμεν λαβεῖν τήν βασιλείαν ἐντός ἡμῶν, οὐχί ἀπελθόντες ἐκεῖ δικαίως ἀκούσομεν λέγοντος αὐτοῦ πρός ἡμᾶς·

那麼，我們若不肯這樣行、不肯順從主基督——趁著我們還在今生時，趕緊接受那在我們裡面的國——我們去到那裡，豈不要公義地聽見祂對我們說：

If, then, we shall not be willing to do this and to obey the Master Christ—so that, while still in this life, we may hasten to receive the kingdom within us—shall we not, having departed thither, justly hear Him say to us:

Τί ζητεῖτε νῦν, ἥν διδομένην ὑμῖν παρ ἐμοῦ λαβεῖν παρῃτήσασθε;

「你們如今為何尋求那從前由我賜給你們、你們卻拒絕領受的呢？

'Why do you now seek that which, when it was given you by Me, you refused to receive?

Οὐχί πολλά παρακαλοῦντός μου ὑμᾶς κοπιᾶσαι καί λαβεῖν αὐτήν παρ ἐμοῦ, οὐκ ἠβουλήθητε, ἀλλά κατεφρονήσατε ταύτης καί τήν ἀπόλαυσιν τῶν φθαρτῶν καί γηΐνων προετιμήσασθε;

我豈不是多次勸勉你們勞苦、從我這裡領受它，你們卻不肯，反倒藐視它，寧願享受那腐朽屬地之物麼？

Was it not that, though I much exhorted you to labour and to receive it from Me, you would not, but despised it and preferred the enjoyment of corruptible and earthly things?

Ποίοις οὖν ἔργοιςἤ λόγοις ταύτην εὑρεῖν ἀπό γε τοῦ νῦν ἐξισχύσητε; Διά τοῦτο τοίνυν, πατέρες καί ἀδελφοί, παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς, πάσῃ σπουδῇ τάς ἐντολάς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν φυλαξώμεθα, ἵνα καί ζωῆς καί βασιλείας ἐπιτευξώμεθα αἰωνίου καί μή ἀκούσωμεν νῦν μέν·

那麼，你們如今又能藉著甚麼行為或言語尋見它呢？」因此，父老們，弟兄們，我勸你們：讓我們竭盡全力遵守我們神的誡命，好使我們得著生命與永遠的國，而不至如今聽見：

By what works, then, or words shall you now be able to find it?' Therefore, fathers and brethren, I exhort you: with all diligence let us keep the commandments of our God, that we may attain both life and eternal kingdom, and may not now hear:

Ὁ ἀπειθῶν τῷ Υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται τήν ζωήν, ἀλλ ἡ ὀργή () τοῦ Θεοῦ μενεῖ ἐπ αὐτόν, ἐν δέ τῷ μέλλοντι αἰῶνι·

「不順從子的人必不得見生命，神的忿怒卻常在他身上」；並在來世聽見：

'He who disobeys the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him'; and in the age to come:

Ἀπέλθατε ἀπ ἐμοῦ, οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς, πόθεν ἐστέ, ἀλλά τῆς εὐλογημένης ἐνωτισθῶμεν ἐκείνης φωνῆς Δεῦτελεγούσης, οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε τήν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν, ὅτι ἐθρέψατέ με, πεινῶντα τήν σωτηρίαν ὑμῶν, διά τῆς ἐργασίας τῶν ἐμῶν ἐντολῶν, ἐποτίσατε, ἐνεδύσατε, συνηγάγετέ με καί ἤλθετε πρός με, καθάραντες τάς καρδίας ὑμῶν ἀπό παντός σπίλου καί ῥύπου τῆς ἁμαρτίας·

「離開我，我不認識你們，不曉得你們是哪裡來的。」倒願我們側耳聽那蒙福的聲音說：「你們這蒙我父賜福的，來承受那為你們所預備的國；因為你們給我吃——當我為你們的救恩飢餓時——藉著遵行我的誡命給我喝、給我穿、收留我、來到我這裡，並潔淨了你們的心，脫離罪一切的污點與污穢；」

'Depart from Me; I do not know you, whence you are.' Rather may we give ear to that blessed voice which says: 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you; for you fed Me—when I hungered for your salvation—through the working of My commandments, you gave Me drink, you clothed Me, you gathered Me in and came to Me, having cleansed your hearts from every stain and defilement of sin;'

ἀθάνατος –, ἧς γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν χάριτι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τούς αἰῶνας

〔那〕不朽〔的國〕——願我們眾人都藉著我們主耶穌基督的恩典得以進入，願榮耀歸與祂，直到萬世。

[the kingdom that is] immortal—which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory unto the ages.

And what is the contemplation of His mysteries.

Καί ὅπως τοῖς καθαροῖς τήν καρδίαν ἀποκαλύπτονται

And how they are revealed to the pure in heart.

Καί διήγησις ἐκ προοιμίων ἐπωφελής περί τινος ὑποτακτικοῦ, λαβόντος Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον ταῖς εὐχαῖς τοῦ πνευματικοῦ αὐτοῦ πατρός

And a profitable account, by way of introduction, concerning a certain disciple who received the Holy Spirit through the prayers of his spiritual father.

Ὑποτακτικός τυγχάνων πατρός τιμίου καί ἰσοστασίου τῶν μεγάλων καί ὑψηλῶν ἁγίων, ἀκούων παρ αὐτοῦ πολλάκις θείας οὐρανόθεν γινομένας ἐν τοῖς ἀγωνιζομένοις ἐλλάμψεις, φωτός τε πλῆθος καί ὁμιλίαν Θεοῦ δι αὐτοῦ πρός ἀνθρώπους, ἐθαύμαζον

我作了一位尊貴、與那些偉大崇高聖徒同等之父的順服門徒，常從他聽見那從天上臨到爭戰者身上、屬神的光照，以及光的豐盛，並神藉著他與人交通之事，就大為驚奇。

Being the disciple of a father honourable and equal in standing to the great and lofty saints, and hearing from him often of the divine illuminations that come from heaven upon those who strive, and of the abundance of light and of God's converse with men through him, I marvelled.

Καί τοσαύτην εἶχον – φησί— τήν ἐπιθυμίαν καί τόν ἔρωτα τοῦ τοιούτου καλοῦ, ὥστε τῇ ἐννοίᾳ τῇ πρός αὐτό πάντων τῶν ἐπιγείων καί ἐπουρανίων ἐπιλανθάνεσθαί με, οὐ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί πάσης βρώσεώς τε καί πόσεως καί σωματικῆς παντοίας ἀνέσεως

他說，我對這樣的美善懷有如此大的渴望與愛慕，以致單單思念它，我便忘卻了一切屬地與屬天之物，不僅如此，甚至忘卻了一切飲食與各樣肉身的安逸。

And I had—he says—so great a desire and longing for such a good, that by the very thought of it I forgot all things earthly and heavenly, and not only these, but even all food and drink and every bodily ease.

Μέγας δέ ὑπάρχων ὁ ἐν ἁγίοις ἅγιος οὗτος καί τῷ προορατικῷ κεκοσμημένος χαρίσματι, βλέπων με ἀδιστάκτως ἐπιτελοῦντα μόνα τά παρ αὐτοῦ μοι ἐπιτασσόμενα καί μήτε ἐσθίοντα μήτε πίνοντα, ἀλλά σύννουν ὄντα δι ὅλου καί ὡς ὑπό τινος ἰοῦ δαπανώμενον, συμπάθειαν κεκτημένος ἀμέτρητον, () προσέταττέ μοι μετ ἐπιτιμίου, καί μή βουλόμενος ἤσθιον·

這位聖徒中的聖徒，既偉大又蒙賜先見的恩賜，看見我毫不遲疑地只行他所吩咐我的事，既不吃也不喝，反倒全然沉思、彷彿被某種毒物耗損，他既懷有無量的慈憐，便帶著〔違命的〕懲罰吩咐我；我雖不願，仍舊吃了；

Now this saint, holy among the saints, being great and adorned with the gift of foresight, and seeing me unhesitatingly performing only those things enjoined upon me by him, and neither eating nor drinking, but wholly absorbed in thought and, as it were, consumed by some poison, having acquired boundless compassion, would command me with a penalty [for disobedience]; and unwilling though I was, I ate;

ἐφοβούμην γάρ – φησί— τό κρίμα τῆς παρακοῆς

他說，因為我懼怕違命的刑罰。

for I feared—he says—the judgement of disobedience.

Ὅσον οὖν τροφῆς μετελάμβανον, πλεῖον ἐφλεγόμην καί τήν ἀνάγκην οὐκ ἔφερον, ὡς καί ποταμηδόν ἐκχέειν με τά δάκρυα καί οὕτω τῆς τραπέζης πολλάκις ἀνίστασθαι

所以我越是進食，就越是被焚燒，無法忍受那壓力，以致我的眼淚如河流傾瀉，因而常常從飯桌上起身離開。

So the more I partook of food, the more I was inflamed, and could not bear the constraint, so that I poured out my tears like a river and thus often rose from the table.

Ἐδόκουν γάρ ὁ ἀναίσθητος ὅτι ἐμποδίζει μου τήν πρόθεσιν, μή εἰδώς οἶον ἔχων πόνον ἐνδότατον, καί οὕτως ἔχων ἠγνόουν ὁ ἄθλιος ὅτι καί τούς λογισμούς ἐγίνωσκε τούς κρυπτούς τῆς καρδίας μου

因為我這麻木的人，以為他在攔阻我的志向，卻不曉得我裡面所懷的是何等的痛楚；我這可憐人在這光景中，竟不曉得他連我心中隱藏的心思也都知道。

For I, insensible one, thought that he was hindering my purpose, not knowing what inward pain I bore; and being thus, I, wretched man, was ignorant that he also knew the hidden reasonings of my heart.

Τοῦτο γάρ διά τῶν ἑξῆς δηλωθήσεται

因為這事必藉著下文顯明出來。

For this will be made plain by what follows.

Ἐν μιᾷ οὖν συνέβη ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ πόλει εἰσελθεῖν, ἐν ᾗ καί τήν κατοίκησιν εἶχε, πρός τό τούς πνευματικούς αὐτοῦ ἐπισκέψασθαι παῖδας

有一次，我們正巧進了他所居住的那城，為要探望他屬靈的兒女。

Now on one occasion it happened that we went into the city in which he also had his dwelling, in order to visit his spiritual children.

Δι ὅλης τοίνυν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐν αὐτοῖς διατρίψαντες – πολλούς γάρ ὠφέλει καί μόνον φαινόμενος , ἑσπέρας ἐλθόντες ἐν τῷ κελλίῳ καί ὥσπερ ἀπό τοῦ πολλοῦ κόπου καί καύματος πρόσπεινοι γεγονότες καί ἔκδιψοι – οὐδαμοῦ γάρ εἶχεν ἔθος ὕπνου μεταλαμβάνειν, καίπερ θερινῆς οὔσης τῆς ὥρας καί αὐτός γέρων ὤν, ὡς περί τά ἑξήκοντα ἐληλακώς ἔτη , καθεσθέντες πρός τό μεταλαβεῖν ἄρτου, ἐγώ οὐκ ἤσθιον

我們在他們中間度過了一整天——因為他單單出現就使許多人得益處——到了晚上回到修士的斗室，如同因許多勞苦與炎熱而變得又飢又渴（因為他向來不習慣睡眠，雖然正值夏令，而他自己又是老人，年約六十歲）；我們坐下要吃餅，我卻不吃。

So after we had spent the whole day among them—for he benefited many even by merely appearing—and had come in the evening to the cell, and, as from much toil and heat, had grown very hungry and thirsty (for he was nowhere accustomed to take sleep, though it was the summer season and he himself an old man, having reached about sixty years of age), we sat down to partake of bread; but I did not eat.

Ἐλογιζόμην γάρ ὅτι, εἰ μεταλάβω τροφῆς καί πόσεως, οὐ μή δυνηθῶ ἐν τῇ εὐχῇ μου στῆναι τό σύνολον πρός τήν τοῦ ποθουμένου ζήτησιν

因為我心裡盤算，我若進食飲水，就全然無法站定在我的禱告中，去尋求我所渴慕的那一位。

For I reasoned that, if I partook of food and drink, I should be wholly unable to stand at my prayer for the seeking of Him whom I longed for.

1:1607

Ταῦτα – φησίν ἐννοῶν, ἐκαθεζόμην ὥσπερ ἐξεστηκώς

他說，我思想著這些事，坐在那裡彷彿魂遊象外。

Thinking these things—he says—I sat as though beside myself.

Ὁ οὖν ἅγιος ἰδών με καί τόν κόπον ὅν μετ αὐτοῦ ἐκοπίασα ἀναλογισάμενος καί γνούς τήν αἰτίαν, οἷα δή τῷ διορατικῷ κεκοσμημένος, ὥσπερ εἴρηται, χαρίσματι, δι ἥν ταῦτα ὑπέμενον, εἰς συμπάθειαν ἐκινήθη πολλήν καί λέγει μοι μετ ἐπιτιμίου·

這位聖徒看見我，又思量到我與他一同所受的勞苦，並知道我忍受這些事的緣由——如前所說，他既蒙賜洞察的恩賜——便大為慈憐所感動，帶著懲罰對我說：

Now the saint, seeing me and reckoning up the toil I had toiled with him, and knowing the cause—being, as has been said, adorned with the gift of discernment—for which I was enduring these things, was moved to great compassion and said to me with a penalty:

() Εἰ γάρ μή ἤθελεν ὁ Θεός ἐλεῆσαί σε, οὐκ ἄν ηὐδόκησεν ἐλθεῖν πρός ἡμᾶς

「因為神若不願憐憫你，就不會喜悅你來到我們這裡。」

'For if God had not willed to have mercy on you, He would not have been well pleased for you to come to us.'

1:1610

Ἐφάγομεν οὖν – φησί – καί ἐπίομεν καί ὑπέρ τήν χρείαν·

他說，於是我們就吃了，也喝了，甚至超過了我們所需的。

So we ate—he says—and drank, even beyond our need.

1:1611

ἤσθιε γάρ τῇ ἐμῇ κἀκεῖνος ἐξακολουθῶν ἀσθενείᾳ

因為他也在用飯，遷就我的軟弱。

For he too was eating, condescending to my weakness.

1:1612

Εἶτα τῆς τραπέζης ἀρθείσης φησί πρός ἐμε·

隨後，飯桌撤去之後，他對我說：

Then, when the table had been cleared away, he said to me:

ἀγρυπνίᾳ, οὔτε κόπῳ σωματικῷ, οὔτε τινί ἑτέρῳ τῶν δεξιῶν πράξεων χαίρει ὁ Θεός καί ἐμφανίζεται, εἰ μή ταπεινῇ τε καί μόνῃ ἀπεριέργῳ καί ἀγαθῇ ψυχῇ καί καρδίᾳ

神所喜悅的、並向之顯現的，不在乎守夜，不在乎身體的勞苦，也不在乎任何其他正當的行為，唯獨在乎一個謙卑、單純、不好管閒事而良善的靈魂與心。

God does not delight in vigils, nor in bodily labour, nor in any other of the right practices, nor does He manifest Himself, except to a lowly soul and heart alone that is unmeddling and good.

Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν ἀκούσας ἐγώ καί θαυμάσας ἐπί τῷ λόγῳ καί τῇ παραινέσει τοῦ ἁγίου, ἐπί πλεῖστόν τε ἐκκαιόμενος καί τάς ἁμαρτίας μου τῇ τοῦ νοός ὀξύτητι πάσας ἐν ῥιπῇ ἐπί μνήμης μου φέρων, περιελιμναζόμην τοῖς δάκρυσι καί πεσών εἰς τούς πόδας αὐτοῦ τούς ἁγίους καί τούτους κρατήσας·

所以，我聽見這些話，驚奇於這聖者的言語與勸勉，心中極其火熱，藉著心思的敏銳在一瞬間將我一切的罪都帶到記憶前，我便被淚水所淹沒；於是俯伏在他聖潔的腳前，抱住他的腳說：

So then, when I had heard these things and marvelled at the word and exhortation of the saint, and being inflamed exceedingly, and bringing to my remembrance in a flash, by the sharpness of my mind, all my sins, I was flooded round about with tears; and falling at his holy feet and taking hold of them, I said:

Εὔχου ὑπέρ ἐμοῦ, ἔφην, ἅγιε τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἵνα διά σοῦ εὕρω ἔλεος, ἐπεί ἐξ ὧν εἶπας ἀγαθῶν, ἐμοί οὐδέ ἕν πρόσεστιν, εἰ μή πολλαί ἁμαρτίαι, ἅς ἐπίστασαι καί αὐτός

「神的聖者啊，」我說，「求你為我禱告，使我藉著你得蒙憐憫；因為你所說的那些美善，我裏面連一樣也沒有，只有許多的罪，就是你自己也知道的。」

'Pray for me,' I said, 'O saint of God, that through you I may find mercy; for of those good things you have spoken, not even one is found in me, but only many sins, which you yourself also know.'

Συμπαθήσας οὖν με ἐπί πλεῖον ὁ ἅγιος καί δακρύσας, εἶτα κελεύσας με ἀναστῆναι ἀπό τοῦ ἐδάφους, φησί·

於是這聖者更加憐憫我，也流淚了，隨後吩咐我從地上起來，說：

Then the saint, having compassion on me all the more and weeping, and then bidding me rise up from the ground, said:

Θαρρῶ τῷ Θεῷ, τῷ τήν χάριν αὐτοῦ πλουσίως μοι δωρησαμένῳ, ὅτι ταύτην καί σοί δισσῶς δωρήσεται ὑπέρ τῆς πίστεως μόνης ἧς ἔχεις καί πρός αὐτόν καί πρός τήν ἐμήν ταπείνωσιν

「我在神裏面滿有膽量，就是那位將祂的恩典豐豐富富賜給我的神；祂也必雙倍地賜給你，單單因著你所存的信心，就是你向著祂、並向著我這卑微之人所存的信心。」

'I take courage in God, who has richly bestowed His grace upon me, that He will bestow it doubly upon you also, for the sake of the faith alone which you have both toward Him and toward my lowliness.'

Τοῦτον τοίνυν τόν λόγον ὡς ἐξ αὐτοῦ δεξάμενος τοῦ Θεοῦ καί τό παρά Ἠλιοῦ πρός Ἐλισαιέ γενόμενον ἐννοήσας καί πιστεύσας ὅτι, εἰ καί ἀνάξιος ἐγώ, ἀλλ ὁ Θεός φιλάνθρωπος, συντόμως ποιῶν τό θέλημα τῶν φοβουμένων αὐτόν, βαλών καί αὖθις μετάνοιαν καί αἰτήσας εὐχήν, ἀπῆλθον πρός τό κελλίον μου, ἐντολήν λαβών ἐξ αὐτοῦ τοῦ ποιῆσαι μόνον Τρισάγιον καί ὑπνῶσαι

所以，我把這話當作是從神自己領受的，又想起以利亞向以利沙所行的事，並且相信：我雖然不配，然而神是愛人的，祂迅速成就那敬畏祂之人的心願；於是我再次俯伏叩拜，求他的禱告，就回到我的斗室去，只從他領受了一條吩咐，就是單單念三聖頌，然後睡覺。

So then, receiving this word as if from God Himself, and calling to mind what had happened from Elijah to Elisha, and believing that, even though I am unworthy, yet God is a lover of mankind and swiftly does the will of those who fear Him, I once again made a prostration and asked for his prayer, and departed to my cell, having received from him a command to do only the Trisagion and to go to sleep.

() Εἰσελθών οὖν ἔνθα εἰώθην προσεύχεσθαι καί τό Ἅγιος ὁ Θεός ἐναρξάμενος, μνησθείς τε τῶν λόγων τοῦ ἁγίου, εὐθέως εἰς δάκρυα καί εἰς πόθον θεῖον ἐπί τοσοῦτον ἐκινήθην, ὥστε μή δύνασθαί με διά λόγου παραστῆσαι τήν γενομένην μοι τηνικαῦτα χαράν τε καί ἡδονήν

（）所以，我進到我素常禱告的地方，開始念「聖哉神」，又想起這聖者的話，立刻就被激動流淚，並生出對神的渴慕，其程度之深，以致我無法用言語表達那時臨到我的喜樂與甘甜。

() So then, entering the place where I was accustomed to pray, and beginning the 'Holy God,' and calling to mind the words of the saint, I was straightway moved to tears and to a divine longing to such a degree that I am unable in words to set forth the joy and delight that then came upon me.

Ἀλλά γάρ εὐθύς πρηνής πεσών ἐπί γῆς εἶδον, καί ἰδού φῶς πολύ νοερῶς ἐπιλάμψαν μοι καί προσλαβόμενόν μου τόν νοῦν ὅλον ἅμα πρός ἑαυτό καί τήν ψυχήν, ὥστε τῷ ἀθρόῳ τοῦ θαύματος ἐκπλαγῆναί με καί ὡς ἐν ἐκστάσει γενέσθαι

然而我隨即俯伏在地，我觀看，看哪，有大光在靈裏照耀在我身上，把我全部的心思連同魂都攝取歸向它自己，以致我因這奇事之突然而驚駭，彷彿進入了神魂超拔的境地。

But indeed, straightway falling prostrate upon the earth, I beheld, and lo, a great light shone upon me spiritually, and took hold of my whole mind together with my soul unto itself, so that at the suddenness of the wonder I was astounded and became as it were in ecstasy.

Οὐ μήν ἀλλά γάρ καί ἐπελαθόμην τοῦ τε τόπου, ἐν ᾧ ἱστάμην, καί ὅστις ὑπῆρχον καί ποῦ, μόνον κράζων τό Κύριε ἐλέησον, καθώς καί ἐν συναισθήσει γενόμενος τοῦτο λέγων ἐπέγνων·

不只如此，我甚至忘了我所站立的地方，也忘了我是誰、我在何處，只呼喊著「主啊，憐憫我」，正如我甦醒過來時，才認出我原是在說這話。

Nay more, I even forgot both the place in which I stood, and who I was and where, only crying out 'Lord, have mercy,' even as, when I came to my senses, I recognized that I was saying this.

然而，父啊，那說話的是誰，或是誰運動了我的舌頭，我不知道——惟有神知道。

But who it was that spoke, O father, or that moved my tongue, I do not know—God knows.

1:1623

Εἴτε γάρ ἐν σώματι, εἴτε ἐκτός σώματος τῷ φωτί τούτῳ προσωμίλησα, οἶδεν αὐτό τό φῶς, τό καί ἀποδιῶξαν ὅσον ἀχλυῶδες ὑπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ μου καί ἅπαν γήϊνον φρόνημα, τό ἀπελάσαν ἀπ ἐμοῦ ὕλην ὅση παχεῖα καί βάρος σώματος τό ἀκηδίαν καί νάρκωσιν ἐμποιῆσαν τοῖς ἐμοῖς μέλεσιν

因為我與這光交通，是在身內或在身外，那光自己知道——就是那驅散我魂中一切幽暗、除去一切屬地思念的光，那從我身上趕逐一切粗重之物、以及那使我肢體生出懈怠與麻木之身體沉重的光。

For whether in the body or out of the body I held converse with this light, the light itself knows—that light which also drove away whatever was murky in my soul, and every earthly mind-set, which expelled from me all matter that was gross, and the heaviness of the body that had wrought sluggishness and numbness in my members.

Οὕτω γάρ ἐτόνωσεν,ὤ θαύματος φρικτοῦ, καί ἐνίσχυσε τήν ἔκλυσιν τῶν ἄρθρων καί νεύρων, τήν ἐκ τοῦ πολλοῦ κόπου μοι τηνικαῦτα προσγενομένην, ὡς δόξαι καί φανῆναί μοι φθορᾶς ἱμάτιον ἀποδύσασθαι

因為它如此堅固——何等可畏的奇事！——並使我那時因極多勞苦而臨到的關節與筋脈的鬆懈重新得力，以致我覺得、也似乎看見自己脫去了朽壞的衣服。

For thus it strengthened—O dread wonder!—and invigorated the slackness of my joints and sinews, which at that time had come upon me from my great toil, so that it seemed and appeared to me that I had put off a garment of corruption.

1:1625

Οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλά καί χαράν εὐθέως πολλήν νοεράν τε αἴσθησιν καί γλυκύτητα ὑπέρ πᾶσαν γεῦσιν τῶν ὁρωμένων ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ μου ἀφράστως ἐνέσταξεν, ἔτι δέ, ἐλευθερίαν καί λήθην πάντων λογισμῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ βίῳ, καί αὐτόν τόν τῆς ἐκδημίας τρόπον τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς παραδόξως ἐχαρίσατό μοι καί ἐγνώρισε

不但如此，它更立刻以無法言喻的方式，將極大的喜樂、屬靈的知覺、以及超越一切可見之物滋味的甘甜注入我的魂裏；並且以奇妙的方式恩賜我、使我認識到那脫離今生一切思慮的自由與遺忘，以及離開現今生命的那種樣式。

And not only so, but it also straightway instilled ineffably into my soul a great joy, a spiritual perception, and a sweetness surpassing every taste of things visible; and moreover it graciously granted me and made known to me freedom and forgetfulness of all the thoughts belonging to this life, and the very manner of departure from the present life, in a marvellous way.

Πρός γάρ μόνην τήν ἐκείνου τοῦ φωτός () ἄρρητον εὐφροσύνην πᾶσαι καί τοῦ νοός καί τῆς ψυχῆς αἱ αἰσθήσεις μου ἐκολλήθησαν

因為我心思與魂的一切知覺，都單單黏附於那光（）所帶來那無法言喻的歡樂。

For unto the ineffable gladness of that light () alone all the senses of my mind and of my soul were cleaved.

1:1627

Ἀλλά γάρ τοῦ φανέντος μοι – φησίνἐκείνου ἀπλέτου φωτόςοὐδέ γάρ ἔχω τι ἕτερον τοῦτο καλέσαι οἰκεῖον καί κατάλληλον ὄνομα , ἠρέμα πως ὑπολωφήσαντος καί οἱονεί συσταλέντος, ἐν συναισθήσει ἐγενόμην καί γνούς οἷα ἡ τούτου δύναμις ἀθρόον εἰργάσατο ἐν ἐμοί καί ἐννοήσας τόν αὐτοῦ χωρισμόν καί ὡς πάλιν ἐν τῷ βίῳ μόνον με κατέλιπεν ἀναλογισάμενος, λύπῃ κάτοχος γέγονα καί ὀδύνῃ βαρείᾳ τοσαύτῃ, ὡς ἐκφράσαι ἀξίως ἀπορῶ τό μέγεθος τῆς δίκην πυρός ἀναφθείσης ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ μου ποικίλης καί σφοδροτάτης ὀδύνης

然而——他說——那向我顯現、無邊無際的光（因為我沒有別的合宜貼切的名稱可稱呼它），當它以某種方式輕柔地漸漸退去、彷彿收斂了自己的時候，我便甦醒過來；當我知道它的能力在我裏面突然成就了何等的事，思想它的離去，並想到它如何再次把我獨自撇在今生，我就被憂愁所轄制，又被如此沉重的痛苦所勝，以致我無從配得地表達那如火在我心中燃起、繁多而極其猛烈之痛苦的巨大。

But when—he says—that boundless light which had appeared to me (for I have no other fitting and suitable name of its own to call it) had gently in some way subsided and, as it were, contracted itself, I came to my senses; and knowing what things its power had suddenly wrought in me, and reflecting upon its withdrawal, and considering how it had again left me alone in this life, I was seized with grief and with a heavy sorrow so great that I am at a loss worthily to express the magnitude of the manifold and most vehement sorrow that was kindled like fire in my heart.

πλῆθος τοῦ ἔρωτος καί τῆς μεγίστης εὐεργεσίας τό ὕψος

那愛的豐盛，並那至大恩惠的高度。

the abundance of the love and the height of the greatest benefaction.

1:1629

Ἐγώ γάρ οὔτε λέγειν διά στόματος δύναμαι οὔτε νῷ καταλαβεῖν τό ἀπέραντον τῆς ὁράσεως

因為那異象的無窮無盡，我既不能用口述說，也不能用心思領會。

For I am able neither to tell with the mouth nor to grasp with the mind the boundlessness of that vision.

Ἀλλ εἰπέ μοι σύ, ὦ σεβασμιώτατε πάτερ καί ἀδελφέ, ἔφην ἐγώ, τάς τοῦ ὁραθέντος σοι ἐνεργείας τρανότερον καί σαφέστερον

「然而，至可敬的父與弟兄啊，」我說，「求你更明白、更清楚地告訴我，你所看見之物的運行作為。」

'But tell me, O most venerable father and brother,' said I, 'the operations of what was seen by you, more plainly and more clearly.'

Καί τό φῶς ἐπενδύει με καί ὡς ἄστρον μοι φαίνεται καί ὑπάρχει τοῖς πᾶσιν ἀχώρητον

那光將我環繞披覆，向我顯現如同一顆星，卻是萬人所不能容納的。

And the light clothes me round about, and appears to me as a star, and is to all men uncontainable.

1:1632

Ἀπαστράπτει ὡς ἥλιος καί τήν κτίσιν συνεχομένην κατανοῶ ἐν αὐτῷ, τά ἐν αὐτῇ πάντα δεικνύει μοι καί φυλάσσειν προστάττει μοι τά μέτρα τά ἴδια

它閃耀如同太陽，我看見整個受造之物都被包含在它裏面；它將其中的萬物指示給我，並吩咐我要守住自己的分限。

It flashes like the sun, and I perceive the whole creation contained within it; it shows me all things that are in it, and commands me to keep my own measures.

1:1633

Τούς ὀφθαλμούς μου αἴρω () αἰσθητῶς τά ἐκεῖσε θεάσασθαι καί πάντα βλέπω καθώς ὑπῆρχον τό πρότερον

我舉起眼目（），要用感官觀看那裏的事物，就看見一切事物都與從前一樣。

I lift up my eyes () to behold sensibly the things there, and I see all things just as they were before.

1:1634

Ταῦτα αἰνίγματά εἰσι καί προοίμια, τό γάρ τέλειον οὐ θεάσῃ ἕως τήν σάρκα ἐνδέδυσαι

這些都是隱謎與序幕；因為只要你還披戴著肉體，就必不得見那完全的。

These are riddles and preludes; for the perfect you shall not behold as long as you are clothed with the flesh.

1:1635

Ἀλλά πρός ἑαυτόν ἐπίστρεφε καί βέπε μή τι πράξῃς τῶν τά ἐνταῦθα ἀποστερούντων σε

然而你要轉向自己，並要謹慎，免得你行了那些奪去你在此所得之物的事。

But turn to yourself, and take heed lest you do any of the things that deprive you of the things here.

1:1636

Εἰ δέ καί παρασφαλεῖς, εἰς ὑπόμνημα ταπεινώσεως, ἀλλά μή ἀποστῇς τῆς μετανοίας ἐπιμελούμενος

你即或跌倒了，也當以此為謙卑的記念；然而不可離棄，總要殷勤於悔改。

But if you should stumble, let it be for a reminder of humility; yet do not depart, taking heed to repentance.

1:1637

Αὕτη γάρ καί τά προγεγονότα καί τά γινόμενα πταίσματα, τῇ ἐμῇ φιλανθρωπίᾳ ἑνουμένη, ἐξαφανίζει. Ταῦτα τοίνυν ἀκηκοώς ἐγώ ἐξ αὐτοῦ, πατέρες καί ἀδελφοί, μικροῦ δεῖν ἐξέστην καί ὅλος σύντρομος ἐγενόμην, ἐννοήσας ἐξαυτῆς εἰς ὅσον εὐθύς ὕψος θεωρίας ἀνῆλθε καί γνώσεως ἐκ μόνης τῆς πρός τόν πνευματικόν πατέρα αὐτοῦ ἀγάπης καί πίστεως καί οἵων ἠξιώθη ἐκ προοιμίων τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἰδεῖν καί ἀπολαῦσαι, ὡς ἤδη τήν ἀνθρωπίνην ἀσθένειαν ἀποβαλλόμενος καί ἄγγελος γεγονώς ἐξ ἀνθρώπων

因為悔改與我愛人的心聯合，就塗抹先前的與現今的過失。父老們、弟兄們啊，我從他聽見這些話，幾乎失了魂，全身戰兢，因為我立時想到：他單單憑著向他屬靈之父所存的愛與信，就上升到何等高的默觀與知識，並且從一開始便配得看見並享受何等的美善，彷彿已經脫去了人的軟弱，從一個人成了天使。

For this, being united to my love for mankind, blots out both the former and the present faults. So then, when I had heard these things from him, fathers and brothers, I well nigh went out of myself and became wholly trembling, considering at once to what height of contemplation and knowledge he had straightway ascended, from love and faith alone toward his spiritual father, and of what good things he had been counted worthy from the very outset to see and to enjoy, as having already cast off human weakness and become an angel out of a man.

Διά τοῦτο οὖν παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς, ἐν Χριστῷ ἀδελφοί, ἀπορρίψωμεν μακράν ἀφ ἑαυτῶν πᾶσαν σχέσιν καί πᾶσαν μέριμναν τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς, μισήσωμεν τάς ἡδονάς τῆς σαρκός, τήν εὐπάθειαν τοῦ σώματος, τήν ἄνεσιν καί ἀργίαν, δι ὧν ἰσχύει τό χεῖρον κατά τοῦ κρείττονος·

所以，在基督裏的弟兄們，我勸勉你們：讓我們把今生一切的牽掛、一切的思慮，從我們身上遠遠拋開；讓我們恨惡肉體的宴樂、身體的嬌養、放縱與懶惰，因為那較劣的正是藉著這些勝過那較優的；

Therefore I exhort you, brothers in Christ: let us cast far away from ourselves every attachment and every care of the present life; let us hate the pleasures of the flesh, the delicate ease of the body, indulgence and idleness, through which the worse prevails against the better;

1:1639

δεῦτε, ἀναλαβώμεθα πίστιν εἰλικρινῆ πρός τόν Θεόν καί τούς κατά Θεόν πατέρας καί διδασκάλους ἡμῶν, κτησώμεθα συντετριμμένην καρδίαν, τεταπεινωμένον τό φρόνημα τῆς ψυχῆς καί καθαράν τήν καρδίαν διά δακρύων καί μετανοίας ἀπό παντός σπίλου καί ῥύπου τῆς ἁμαρτίας, () ἵνα καί ἡμεῖς ἀξιωθῶμεν ἐλάσαι ποτέ εἰς μέτρα συντόμως τοιαῦτα καί ἰδεῖν καί ἀπολαῦσαι τῶν ἀπορρήτων ἀγαθῶν ἔνθεν ἤδη τοῦ θείου φωτός, εἰ καί μή τελείως, ἀλλ ἐκ μέρους καί ὅσον χωροῦμεν κατά τήν ἀναλογίαν τῆς καθάρσεως ἡμῶν

來吧，讓我們對神、並對那些按著神的心而作我們父與教師的人，存純全的信心；讓我們得著痛悔的心、謙卑的魂之意念，並藉著眼淚與悔改，使心得潔淨，脫離罪一切的玷污與污穢，（）好叫我們也能配得有一天迅速地進入這樣的分限，甚至從今就得見並享受神聖之光那無法言喻的美善——縱使不完全，也在部分裏，並按著我們潔淨的程度、照我們所能容納的。

come, let us take up sincere faith toward God and toward our fathers and teachers who are according to God; let us acquire a contrite heart, a humbled disposition of soul, and a heart made clean through tears and repentance from every stain and defilement of sin, () so that we too may be counted worthy one day to press swiftly into such measures, and to see and to enjoy the ineffable good things of the divine light even from here, if not perfectly, yet in part and as much as we have room, according to the proportion of our purification.

1:1640

Οὕτω γάρ καί ἑαυτούς ἑνώσομεν τῷ Θεῷ καί ὁ Θεός ἑνωθείη ἡμῖν καί τοῖς ἐγγίζουσιν ἐσόμεθα φῶς καί ἅλας καί εἰς μεγάλην ὠφέλειαν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τούς αἰῶνας

因為我們如此就與神聯合，神也與我們聯合，我們對那些親近我們的人就要作光、作鹽，並在我們的主基督耶穌裏成為極大的益處；願榮耀歸與祂，直到永世。

For thus we shall both unite ourselves to God, and God shall be united to us, and we shall be to those who draw near light and salt, and shall be for great profit in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory unto the ages.

Καί ὅπως ὁ ὑπό τῆς ἀγάπης κατασχεθείς τοῦ Θεοῦ καί εἰς βάθος ταπεινοφροσύνης ἐλάσας, ἐνεργεῖται ὑπό τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Ἁγίου

又論到那被神的愛所轄住、並進入謙卑深處之人，如何被聖靈所運行動工。

And how he who is held fast by the love of God and has pressed into the depth of humble-mindedness is energized by the Holy Spirit.

1:1642

Διό καί ἐκπληττόμενος εἰς τήν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἄφατον ἀγαθότητα, οὕτω πως καταπληκτικόν ἀνακράζω·

因此，我驚駭於神那說不盡的美善，就這樣滿懷驚奇地高聲呼喊：

Wherefore also, being astounded at the unspeakable goodness of God, I cry aloud thus in a manner full of amazement:

1:1643

Ὤ θαύματος ἔκπληξις καί ἐντολῶν Θεοῦ δύναμις, οἵους ἀπεργάζονται τούς ποιοῦντας καί φυλάσσοντας αὐτάς!

哦，這奇事何等令人驚駭，神誡命的能力何等浩大！它們竟使那些遵行並持守它們的人，成為何等的人！

O the astonishment of the wonder, and the power of God's commandments! What manner of men do they make those who do and keep them!

1:1644

Ἀρχήν γάρ ποτε βαλών ἐν αὐταῖς, μικρόν ἀνανήψας ἐκ βάθους κακῶν καί σκοτώσεως, φόβῳ μέν συνειχόμην τοῖς κακοῖς μου σφιγγόμενος, ἀγάπη δέ ὡς ἀληθῶς καί τοῦ καλοῦ με ἡ ἔφεσις πρός αὐτό τό πλεῖστον ἐπέστρεφεν

因為當我曾在它們裏面起了頭，稍微從眾惡與黑暗的深處甦醒過來，我一面被懼怕所轄住，被我的眾惡所綑綁，另一面卻真被愛、被對美善的渴慕大大地轉向那美善。

For when I had once made a beginning in them, having a little roused myself from the depth of evils and of darkness, I was held fast by fear, being constrained by my evils, yet love truly, and the yearning for the good, turned me for the most part toward it.

1:1645

Ὅλον δέ ἦν τό τελούμενον φυγή κακῶν, πρός τά καλά συνωθοῦσά με

所成就的全部，乃是一種逃離眾惡、催逼我趨向美善的行動。

And the whole of what was being accomplished was a flight from evils, urging me on toward the good things.

1:1646

Ἕν μόνον ἐν μέσῳ τούτων ὑπῆρχε τό ἀηδίζον με, τῶν προλήψεων ἡ συνήθεια καί ἦθος κακόν καί φιλήδονον, ὅπερ τῇ ἐπιμόνῳ τῆς εὐχῆς ἐργασίᾳ καί τῇ μελέτῃ τῶν θείων λογίων καί τῷ ἐν ἕξει γενέσθαι τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἀφανίζεται

在這中間唯有一件事使我不快，就是舊有偏向的習性，以及那邪惡好逸樂的品性；然而這是藉著恆切禱告的操練、藉著默想神的聖言、並藉著在美善事上養成習慣，而得以消除的。

One thing only amid these was troubling me: the habit of former inclinations, and the evil and pleasure-loving disposition, which is done away by the persevering exercise of prayer, and by the meditation of the divine oracles, and by becoming settled in the good things.

1:1647

Ὥσπερ γάρ τοῦ ἡλίου κατά μικρόν ἀνετέλλοντος ὑποχωρεῖ τό σκότος καί ἀφανίζεται, () οὕτω καί ἀρετῆς αὐγαζούσης οἵα δή σκότος ἡ κακία ἐλαύνεται καί ἀνυπόστατος δείκνυται, καί τηνικαῦτα μένομεν διαπαντός ἀγαθοί, καθά πρώην ὑπήρχομεν πονηροί

因為正如太陽漸漸升起時，黑暗就退去消失，（）照樣，當美德發光時，邪惡也如黑暗被趕逐，顯明是虛而無實的；那時我們就常存為善，正如我們先前常存為惡一樣。

For just as, when the sun rises little by little, the darkness withdraws and vanishes, () so also, when virtue shines forth, wickedness is driven away like darkness and is shown to be without substance; and then we abide continually good, even as formerly we were wicked.

1:1648

Διά μικρᾶς οὖν ὑπομονῆς καί προαιρέσεως ἐλαχίστουἤ μᾶλλον εἰπεῖν Θεοῦ βοηθείᾳ τοῦ ζῶντος ἀναπλαττόμεθα καί ἀνανεούμεθα, ψυχήν καί σῶμα καί διάνοιαν καθαιρόμενοι, καί γινόμεθα ἅπερ ἀγνοοῦντες τυγχάνομεν, ὑπό τῶν παθῶν καλυπτόμενοι, καί προσλαμβάνομενἅ οὐκ ἐσμέν ἄξιοι

所以，藉著少許的忍耐與極微小的志願——或者更確切地說，藉著永活之神的幫助——我們得以被重新塑造、被更新，在魂、體與悟性上得潔淨，並且成為那我們在無知中、被諸情慾所遮蓋而其實已然所是的樣式，也領受了我們本不配領受的。

Therefore through a little patience and the least resolve—or rather, to speak truly, by the help of the living God—we are re-fashioned and renewed, being purified in soul and body and understanding, and we become what, in our ignorance, we already are, being covered over by the passions, and we receive what we are not worthy of.

Ἐξ ὧν ἔλαβον κἀγώ, ὁ πάντων εὐτελέστερος καί ἀχρεῖος – καλόν γάρ ἀνακηρύττειν εὐγνωμόνως τάς εὐεργεσίας τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ φιλανθρώπου , τῇ τοῦ ἐμοῦ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ χάριτι

這些事我也領受了，我這在眾人中最卑賤無用的人——因為感恩地宣揚愛人之神的恩惠乃是美事——這都是靠我救主耶穌基督的恩典。

Of these things I too received, I who am of all men the most worthless and useless—for it is good gratefully to proclaim the benefactions of God who loves mankind—by the grace of my Saviour Jesus Christ.

1:1650

Ἔλαβον δέ τῇ χάριτι χάριν καί τῇ εὐργεσίᾳ εὐεργεσίαν καί τῷ πυρί πῦρ, φλόγα δέ τῇ φλογί καί τῇ ἀναβάσει προσετέθησαν ἀναβάσεις μοι, τῷ δέ τέλει τῆς ἀναβάσεως φῶς καί τῷ φωτί φῶς τρανότερον

我恩上加恩地領受，惠上加惠地領受，火上加火，焰上加焰；上升之上又加上升，在上升的盡頭有光，光上又有更明亮的光。

And I received grace for grace, and benefaction for benefaction, and fire for fire, and flame for flame; and to ascents were added for me further ascents, and at the end of the ascent light, and to the light a yet clearer light.

1:1651

Καί μέσον τούτου πάλιν φαιδρός ἔλαμψεν ἥλιος καί ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἐφάνη ἀκτίς καί αὕτη τά πάντα ἐπλήρωσε καί τό νοούμενον ἀκατάληπτον, ἐν οἷς ἔμεινά τε ἐγώ δακρύων ἡδύτατα καί θαυμάζων τά ἄφραστα

在這光的中間，又有明亮的太陽發出光輝，從它發出一道光芒，這光芒充滿了萬有，而其中所顯明的乃是不可測度的；我就停留在其中，甜美地流淚，驚奇於那無法言喻之事。

And in the midst of this again a bright sun shone forth, and from it appeared a ray, and this filled all things, while that which was thereby made known was incomprehensible; amid which I remained, weeping most sweetly and marvelling at the ineffable things.

Νοῦς δέ θεῖος τῷ ἐμῷ νοΐ προσωμίλει καί οὕτω λέγων ἐδίδασκεν·

有一位神聖的心思與我的心思交通，這樣說話，教導我說：

And a divine mind held converse with my mind and, speaking thus, taught me, saying:

Ἔγνως οἷόν σε ἡ ἐμή δύναμις ἀπετέλεσε φιλανθρώπως δία πίστιν καί ὑπομονήν μικράν, τήν ἀγάπην σου βεβαιοῦσαν;

「你可曾認識，我的能力藉著信、並藉著那堅固你之愛的少許忍耐，愛憐地把你造成了何等的人麼？」

'Have you come to know what manner of man My power has made you, lovingly, through faith and a little patience which confirmed your love?'

Ἰδού ὑπό θάνατον ὤν, ἐγένου ἀθάνατος καί κρατούμενος τῇ φθορᾷ, εὑρίσκῃ ταύτης ἐπάνω

「看哪，你本在死亡之下，卻已成為不死的；你本被朽壞所轄制，卻發覺自己在它之上。」

'Behold, being under death, you have become immortal; and being held fast by corruption, you find yourself above it.'

Κόσμον οἰκεῖς καί σύν ἐμοί ὑπάρχεις, σῶμα ἐνδέδυσαι καί οὐδεμιᾷ τῶν τοῦ σώματος ἡδονῶν ὑποσύρῃ

「你住在世上，卻與我同在；你披戴著身體，卻不被身體的任何宴樂拖下去。」

'You dwell in the world and yet are with Me; you are clothed with a body and yet are drawn down by none of the pleasures of the body.'

Μικρός εἶ τό ὁρώμενον καί νοερῶς ὁρᾷς

「你在可見的事上是微小的，卻能在靈裏觀看。」

'You are small in that which is visible, and yet you see spiritually.'

1:1657

Πάντως ἐγώ σε ἐκ τοῦ μή ὄντος εἰς τό εἶναι παρήγαγον

「確確實實是我把你從無有中領進存在。」

'Assuredly it was I who brought you forth from non-being into being.'

「主啊，我這有罪不潔的人算得甚麼，你竟然眷顧我，並看我配得與你交通？」

'Who am I, O Lord, the sinful and unclean, that You have at all looked upon me and counted me worthy of converse?'

Ὁ ἄχραντος, ὁ ἀόρατος καί τοῖς πᾶσιν ἀπρόσιτος, πῶς ἐμοί προσιτός καί γλυκύς καί φαινόμενος ὡραιότατος διά τῆς ἀπαστραπτούσης σου δόξης καί χάριτος δείκνυσαι;

「你這無玷污的、看不見的、萬人所不能親近的，怎麼竟向我成為可親近的、甘甜的，並藉著你閃耀的榮耀與恩典，顯得極其美麗？」

'You, the undefiled, the invisible, and to all men unapproachable—how are You approachable to me, and sweet, and shown most beautiful through Your flashing glory and grace?'

Ταῦτα ἤκουον μέν μυστικῶς καί παραδόξως ἀπεκρινάμην, τό δέ ὑπέρ φύσιν ἐξέπληττε καί τό φοβερόν ἀποστῆναί με ἠνάγκαζε

這些事我奧祕地聽見，又出人意外地回答了；然而那超乎本性的事使我驚駭，那可畏之處逼我退避。

These things I heard mystically and answered paradoxically; but that which was beyond nature astounded me, and the fearfulness compelled me to withdraw.

Τό ἄφραστον κάλλος τοῦ φαινομένου ἐτίτρωσκέ μου τήν καρδίαν καί πρός ἀγάπην εἷλκε με ἄπειρον, ἡ δέ ἀγάπη ἐποίει με πρός τά κάτω μή στρέφεσθαι, ἀλλ ὡς ἤδη τελείως καί ἔξω τῶν δεσμῶν τῆς σαρκός γεγονώς, ἔχαιρον καί πάλιν ἤμην τό ὅλον ἄνθρωπος

那顯現者無法言喻的美麗刺傷了我的心，把我吸引到無限的愛裏；這愛使我不再轉向下面的事物，反而彷彿一個已然完全脫離肉體束縛的人一樣歡喜；然而我卻又完全是個人。

The ineffable beauty of Him who appeared wounded my heart and drew me to a boundless love; and the love made me not turn back toward the things below, but, as one who had already become perfectly and outside the bonds of the flesh, I rejoiced; and yet again I was wholly a man.

Πληροφορία τῆς συγχωρήσεως τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μοι ἐδίδοτο καί ὑπέρ πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἔβλεπον ἐμαυτόν ἁμαρτωλότερον

赦罪的十足確據賜給了我，我卻看自己比每一個人都更有罪。

Full assurance of the forgiveness of my sins was given to me, and I saw myself as more sinful than every man.

Ἀπιστῆσαι τῷ λαλοῦντι οὐκ εἶχον καί πιστεῦσαι ἐφοβούμην διά τήν τῆς ἐπάρσεως ἔκπτωσιν

我不能不信那說話者，卻又因怕自高而墮落，不敢相信。

To disbelieve Him who spoke I could not, yet I was afraid to believe, because of the fall of pride.

1:1665

Πολλά γινώσκω τῶν τοῖς πλείοσιν ἀγνοουμένων καί ὑπέρ ἅπαντας ἀνθρώπους εἰμί ἀγροικότερος

許多為多人所不知道的事，我卻知道，然而我又比眾人更加粗鄙。

I know many things of those that are unknown to most, and yet beyond all men I am the more uncouth.

1:1666

Χαίρω ὅτι μοι Χριστός, ᾧ πεπίστευκα, ἐδωρήσατο βασιλείαν αἰώνιον καί ἀσάλευτον καί ὡς ἀνάξιος τῶν ἐκεῖσε κλαίω διαπαντός καί κλαίων οὐ παύσομαι

我歡喜，因為我所信的基督已賜給我永遠不能震動的國度；然而我既不配得那裏的事物，就不住地哭泣，且哭泣不止。

I rejoice that Christ, in whom I have believed, has bestowed upon me an eternal and unshakeable kingdom; and, as being unworthy of the things there, I weep continually, and weeping I shall not cease.

1:1667

Ἀνοῖξαι τό στόμα καί συγχώρησιν αἰτήσασθαι τῶν ἐμοί πεπραγμένων οὐ τολμῶ καί ὑπέρ ἄλλων ἐξ ἀγάπης παρρησιάζομαι και ἵν ἀφρόνως εἴπω καί εἰσακούομαι

我不敢開口為自己所行的事求赦免；然而出於愛，我卻為別人放膽陳說，而且——容我愚妄地說——我竟蒙垂聽。

I dare not open my mouth and ask forgiveness for the things done by me; yet out of love I speak with boldness on behalf of others, and—that I may speak foolishly—I am heard.

1:1668

Ὡς υἱός παρίσταμαι καί οὕτω διάκειμαι ὡς ξένος ἀπαρρησίαστος

我像兒子一樣站立，卻又像一個沒有膽量的外人一樣心中如此。

I stand as a son, and yet I am disposed as a stranger without boldness.

1:1669

ἑξῆς, καί ὅλως ἐν ἀληθείᾳ εὑρίσκομαι μηδέ τό ἕν φυλάξας τάλαντον ἐκ πάντων ὁμοῦ τῶν δοθέντων μοι

如此等等；並且我實在被顯明，在所賜給我的一切之中，連一他連得也未曾保守。

and so forth; and in truth I am found altogether not to have kept even the one talent out of all that were given to me together.

Τῶν καλῶν καταλαβεῖν δοκῶ τό ἀκρότατον καί εἰς τήν ἄβυσσον τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου κάτω κείμενος κατέχομαι καί τῇ ἀπογνώσει βυθίζομαι καί ὅταν πάντων κατώτερος γένωμαι, τότε ὑπεράνω τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀναφέρομαι καί τῇ ἀγάπῃ πάλιν ἑνοῦμαι Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν, ᾧ καί ἐλπίζω, τῆς γεώδους ταύτης καί βαρείας σαρκός στερηθείς, παραστῆναι ἐγγύτερον, οὐ μήν ἀλλά γάρ καί μυηθῆναι σαφέστερον τῆς ἐκεῖ ἀγάπης τήν αἰώνιον εὐφροσύνην καί ἀγαλλίασιν

我以為自己已經達到美善事物的頂峰，然而躺臥在我罪的深淵下面，卻被轄制、沉沒於絕望之中；當我成為眾人中最卑下的時候，那時我卻被高舉超乎諸天之上，並藉著愛再次與我們的神基督聯合；我也盼望，一旦脫去了這屬地而沉重的肉體，就能更近地站在祂面前，並且更清楚地被引入那裏之愛所有永遠的歡樂與歡騰。

I think I have attained the very summit of good things, and yet, lying below in the abyss of my sins, I am held fast and sunk in despair; and when I become lowest of all, then I am borne up above the heavens and am again united through love to Christ our God, to whom also I hope, once I have been stripped of this earthly and heavy flesh, to stand nearer, and moreover to be initiated more clearly into the eternal gladness and exultation of the love that is there.

Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν, ἀδελφοί μου, γράψαι ἠθέλησα οὐχ ὡς δόξαν θηρᾶσαι βουλόμενος ἄφρων γάρ ὁ τοιοῦτος καί τῆς ἄνω δόξης ἀλλότριος , ἀλλ ὅπως εἰδότες ἔσεσθε τήν ἄμετρον φιλανθρωπίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί οἷον ὑπάρχει τῶν ἐντολῶν τό φορτίον τό ἐλαφρότατον αὐτοῦ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Χριστοῦ καί Θεοῦ καί ὅση τῆς αὐτοῦ δωρεᾶς ἡ ἀντίδοσιςἅ καί μανθάνοντεςἤ ἐπιποθήσατε τῆς αὐτοῦ ἀγάπης ἐπιτυχεῖνἤ τό ταύτης ἀποτυχεῖν ὡς αἰώνιον θάνατον φοβήθητε καί φρίξατε , διδαχθήσεσθε δέ πρός τούτοις καί ταπεινώσεως ὕψος καί τελείας ἀγάπης τεκμήριον, ἔτι δέ καί τό ἐμπόρευμα τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ συγκαταβάσεως γνώσεσθε καί τό δῶρον τῆς μεγάλης αὐτοῦ καί ἀκενώτου πρός ἡμᾶς κενώσεως εἴσεσθε καί τόν φρικτόν τρόπον τῆς χοϊκῆς ἀναπλάσεως καταμάθετε, ὅπως τε ζῶσιν οἱ πιστεῦσαι θελήσαντες τῷ σταυρωθέντι Χριστῷ, οἱ μιμησάμενοι δηλονότι τήν αὐτοῦ () ὑπακοήν καί ταπείνωσιν καί νεῦσαι βουληθέντες ἐκ τῶν χειρόνων ἐπί τά κρείττονα, καί ὅπως ἀλλοιοῦνται οἱ διά τήν ἀγάπην τοῦ ἡμᾶς ἀγαπήσαντος πάντα καταλιμπάνοντες, μηδενός δέ τῶν ἐνεστώτωνἤ μελλόντων στερούμενοι, ὅπως γίνονται παραδόξως οἱ σκοτεινοί φῶς, τῷ μεγάλῳ φωτί πλησιάσαντες, οἵ καί τῶν κάτω, καθά καί Μωσῆς ποτε, θεοί ἀποκαθίστανται, τοῖς ἄνω ἑνούμενοι, καί μετά πάντων ὄντες οὐδαμῶς ἐκ τῆς συνουσίας τῶν ἄλλων μολύνονται·

所以，我的弟兄們，我所以願意寫這些事，並非像一個想要獵取虛榮的人——因為這樣的人是愚昧的，與那在上的榮耀無分——乃是要叫你們認識神對人那無可測度的愛，好知道我們救主基督、就是神自己那誡命之擔子是何等至為輕省的，並知道祂恩賜的報償是何等浩大；你們既學了這些，或當渴慕得著祂的愛，或當懼怕、戰兢於失去祂的愛，如同懼怕永遠的死亡；此外，你們還要學得謙卑的高度與完全之愛的憑據，並且要認識神俯就的貨財，得知祂向我們那偉大而永不枯竭之倒空的恩賜，並要明白那塵土之人被重新塑造的可畏方式——就是那些甘願相信被釘十字架之基督的人如何活著，也就是那些效法了祂（）順從與謙卑、甘願從較劣轉向較優的人；並且那些為著那愛我們者的愛而撇下萬事、卻無論在現今或將來一無所缺的人，如何被改變；那黑暗的人如何出人意外地，因親近了大光而成為光——他們甚至在下面的事上，如同摩西從前一樣，被復立為神，與上面的事聯合，並且雖與眾人同在，卻絕不因與別人來往而被玷污；

These things, then, my brothers, I have desired to write, not as one wishing to hunt after glory—for such a man is foolish and estranged from the glory above—but that, knowing the measureless love of God for mankind, you may know what manner of thing is the burden of the commandments, most light, of our Saviour Christ and God Himself, and how great is the recompense of His gift; which things, when you learn them, either long to attain to His love, or fear and shudder at failing of it as at an eternal death; and besides these you shall be taught both the height of humility and the token of perfect love, and moreover you shall come to know the merchandise of God's condescension, and shall learn the gift of His great and inexhaustible self-emptying toward us, and shall comprehend the awesome manner of the re-fashioning of the man of dust—how they live who have willed to believe in the crucified Christ, that is, those who have imitated His () obedience and humility and have willed to incline from the worse toward the better, and how they are transformed who, for the love of Him who loved us, leave all things behind, yet are deprived of nothing whether present or to come; how paradoxically the dark become light, having drawn near to the great Light—who also, even of things below, as Moses once did, are restored as gods, being united to the things above, and being together with all men are in no way defiled by association with others;

καί εὐεργετοῦντες τούς πλησιάζοντας ζημίαν τοῦ καλοῦ οὐδεμίαν ὑφίστανται, ἀλλά μεταδίδοντες καί ἑτέροις τόν ἔλεον λαμβάνουσι πλέονἤ διδοῦσι, μᾶλλον τῷ ὁμοιοῦσθαι φιλανθρώπως τῷ φιλανθρώπῳ, ὅσον ἀνέλθωσι ταπεινούμενοι καί ὅσον ταπεινωθῶσιν ὑψούμενοι, πάντων ἀποροῦντες τῇ ταπεινώσει τῶν ἀναγκαίων καί μηδενός λειπόμενοι, τρεφόμενοι τῇ αἰωνίῳ ζωῇ τῆς ἁγίας ἀγάπης

並且他們使親近之人得益處，自己卻不因此有美善上的虧損，反倒因分給別人，所得的憐憫多過所給的，這乃是因他們被愛憐地模成愛人者的樣式，以致他們越被降卑就越上升，越被降卑就越被高舉，因著謙卑而缺乏一切所需之物，卻一無所缺，乃是被聖愛那永遠的生命所餵養。

and, benefiting those who draw near, they suffer no loss of the good, but, imparting to others also, they receive mercy more than they give, the rather in being made lovingly like unto the Lover of mankind, inasmuch as they ascend the more in being humbled, and are exalted the more in being humbled, being in want of all necessities through humility yet lacking nothing, being nourished by the eternal life of holy love.

Ἰδού οὖν ἀνεκάλυψα ὑμῖν τοῖς φίλοις καί ἀδελφοῖς μου τά ἐν ἐμοί κεκρυμμένα μυστήρια – τό τέλος τῆς ἐμῆς ζωῆς ἐγγίζον ὁρῶ ὅσον οὔπω , ἵνα εἰδῆτε καί μετανοίας τρόπους, ἀρχῆς τε καί μεσότητος ἀναβάσεις καί προκοπάς καί τελειότητος μέτρα, καί σπουδάσητε μιμήσασθαι, εἰ μή τινα ἄλλον, τόν γοῦν γεγεννηκότα πάντως ὑμᾶς καί ἐκ ψυχῆς ἀγαπήσαντα, γαλακτοτροφήσαντά τε τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ καί τῷ ζωογονοῦντι θρέψαντα ἄρτῳ καί βαδίζειν ὑποδείξαντα ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ τῶν σωτηρίων ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ᾧ πρέπει πᾶσα δόξα νῦν καί ἀεί καί εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων

所以，看哪，我的朋友與弟兄們，我已將那隱藏在我裏面的奧祕向你們揭開了——因為我看見我生命的終結臨近，幾乎就在眼前——為要叫你們既知道悔改的方式，也知道起頭與中途的上升與長進、並完全的分限，並且要熱切地效法，縱不效法別人，至少要效法那全然生了你們、從心裏愛你們的人；他曾以神的話用奶餵養你們，用那賜生命的糧養育你們，並指示你們如何行走在神那拯救誡命的道路上——願一切榮耀歸與祂，從今直到永永遠遠。

Behold, then, I have unveiled to you, my friends and brothers, the mysteries hidden within me—for I see the end of my life drawing near, well nigh at hand—that you may know both the modes of repentance, and the ascents and advances of the beginning and of the middle, and the measures of perfection, and may be zealous to imitate, if no other, at least him who altogether begot you and loved you from the soul, and nourished you with milk by the word of God, and fed you with the bread that gives life, and showed you how to walk in the way of the saving commandments of God—to whom befits all glory now and ever and unto the ages of ages.

Περί μεθόδων τοῦ πονηροῦ, ὧν ὑποβάλλει τοῖς κουφοτέροις καί φιλοπρωτεύουσιν, ὁπόταν ὁ ποιμήν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων γένηται

論到那惡者的伎倆，就是當牧者從人間離世時，他向那些較輕浮、並愛居首位之人所暗中挑唆的事。

Concerning the methods of the evil one, which he insinuates to the more frivolous and to those who love pre-eminence, whenever the shepherd departs from among men.

1:1675

Καί ὅτι χρή τούς μέν ἀναξίως ἐπιπηδῶντας τῇ ἀρχῇ πάσῃ κωλύειν συνωθεῖν ἐπί τοῦτο καί συνεργεῖν

並論到我們必須攔阻那些不配而妄圖攫取一切治理職分的人，既不催逼他們如此行，也不與他們同工。

And that it is needful both to hinder those who unworthily leap upon every rule, and not to urge them on toward this nor to cooperate with them.

1:1676

() Ἀδελφέ, εἰ λαοῦ καί ποίμνης ἡγούμενος κατεστάθης, σκόπησον καλῶς καί ἀνάκρινον σεαυτόν ποίῳ λογισμῷ καί ἐκ ποίου τρόπου εἰς τήν τοιαύτην κατέστης ἀρχήν

（）弟兄啊，你若被立為百姓與群羊的領袖，就當好好思量，察驗自己，是憑著甚麼思念、藉著甚麼方式，得以居於這樣的治理職分。

() Brother, if you have been appointed as leader of a people and a flock, consider well and examine yourself, by what reasoning and in what manner you came to be in such a rule.

Εἰ μέν οὖν εὑρήσεις σεαυτόν κἄν ψιλῷ λογισμῷ ἐνθυμηθέντα, ὅτι διά τήν τῶν ἀνθρώπων τιμήν ταύτῃ ἐπέδραμεςἤ διά προεδρίανἤ διά δόξαν, εἴτε ὡς μή καταδεξαμένου σου παρ ἑτέρου ἄρχεσθαι ἀδελφοῦ διά τό οἴεσθαι μή εἶναί σου εὐλαβέστερονἤ λογιώτερον ἕτερον,ἤ διά τό ἔχειν τάς σωματικάς χρείας περισσότερον τῶν ἄλλων ἁπάντων καί τήν δουλείαν καί τήν ἀνάπαυσιν,ἤ διά τό τινάς τῶν ἰδίων καί συγγενῶν εὐεργετῆσαι καί φίλους κτήσασθαι τούς κατά σάρκα περιπατοῦντας,ἤ διά τό ὀνομαστόν σε ἐκ τῆς ἡγουμενίας γενέσθαι καί () καί τῆς τοῦ κόσμου βασιλεῦσι καί ἄρχουσι γνώριμον, εἴτε καί κατά φθόνον ὡς ὅτι οὐκ ἤθελες, ἀλλ ἵνα μή γένηται ὁ δεῖνα ὁ ἀδελφός ἐσπούδασας τοῦ γενέσθαι σύ,ἤ καί διά τήν τῶν ἀνθρώπων αἰσχύνην, ἵνα μή ἀκούσωσι πάντεςἤ καί παραγενόμενοί τινες ἴδωσιν ὅτι ἄλλος ὑπέρ σέ προεκρίθη καί καταγνώσωσί σου ὡς μή ἐναρέτου, γινώσκων γίνωσκε ὅτι οὐ κατά Θεόν ἐγένετό σου ἡ πρόβλησις

所以，你若察覺自己，哪怕只是在一個赤裸的念頭裏，曾這樣想過：你追逐這職分，是為著從人來的尊榮，或為著居首位，或為著榮耀；或因你不甘心被別的弟兄治理，因為你以為再沒有比你更虔敬或更有學問的人；或為要比其餘眾人更豐富地享有身體的需用、服事與安逸；或為要施惠給你自己的親屬與親族，並結交那些按肉體而行的人為友；或為要藉著院長之職成為著名，（）並為世上的君王與官長所認識；或甚至出於嫉妒，彷彿你並不願意，卻熱心要叫你自己得著這職分，免得某弟兄得著它；或甚至因在人面前的羞恥，恐怕眾人都聽見，或恐怕在場的某些人看見，有別人被選在你以上，就要定你的罪，說你沒有美德——你就當確實知道，你的擢升不是出於神。

If, then, you shall find yourself to have entertained, even in a bare thought, that you ran after this for the sake of honour from men, or for the sake of the presidency, or for glory; or as not brooking to be ruled by another brother, because of supposing that no other is more reverent or more learned than you; or in order to have your bodily needs more abundantly than all the rest, both the service and the repose; or in order to benefit certain of your own kin and relatives and to gain as friends those who walk according to the flesh; or in order that you might become renowned from the abbacy and () known also to the kings and rulers of the world; or even out of envy, as though you did not wish it, but were zealous that you yourself should become it, lest so-and-so the brother should become it; or even because of shame before men, lest all should hear, or lest certain, being present, should see, that another was preferred above you, and should condemn you as not being virtuous—know assuredly that your advancement was not according to God.

Καί ἵνα σοι, ἐξ ὧν ὑποτίθεται ὁ πονηρός ἑκάστῳ τῶν ἐν κοινοβίῳ καθεζομένων, σαφέστερον τοῦτο ποιήσωμαι, ἐντεῦθεν ἄκουε τάς ἐπιβουλάς καί ὑπονοίας τοῦ Σατανᾶ

為要藉著那惡者向修道院中每一個安居之人所暗示的事，把這事向你說得更明白些，你且從此聽那撒但的詭計與陰謀。

And that I may make this more clear to you from the things which the evil one suggests to each of those settled in a coenobium, hear henceforth the plots and the machinations of Satan.

Ὑποβάλλειν ἄρχεται ὁ ἐχθρός, ὅταν ὁ ποιμήν πρός Κύριον ἐκδημήσῃ, ἕτερον δέ ὀφείλει ἐκλέξασθαι ἡ ἀδελφότης, καί λέγειν ἑκάστῳ κατά τό ἴδιον πάθος, κατά τό ἴδιον θέλημα, κατά τήν ἰδίαν κατάστασιν

當牧者離世歸主、弟兄群體理應另選一位的時候，那仇敵便開始暗中挑唆，並照著各人自己的情慾、自己的意願、自己的光景，向各人說話。

The enemy begins to make his suggestions when the shepherd departs to the Lord, and the brotherhood ought to choose another, and he speaks to each according to his own passion, according to his own will, according to his own condition.

Ἐάν οὖν ὦσιν ἐν τῇ ποίμνῃ ἐκείνῃ τῶν εὐλαβεστέρων τινές, ταῦτα ἑκάστῳ αὐτῶν ὑποτίθεται καί φησίν·

所以，那群羊中若有幾個較為虔敬的人，他就向他們各人暗示這些事，說：

If, then, there be in that flock certain of the more reverent, these things he suggests to each of them, and says:

Εἰ ἐγένου σύ ἐνταῦθα ποιμήν καί ἡγούμενος, εἶχες ἄν πάντως ὠφελῆσαι καί σῶσαι καί τῶν σῶν αὐτοῖς ἀρετῶν μεταδοῦναι, ἐπεί ὁ δεῖναἤ ὁ δεῖνα ἀδελφός ἐν τῷ πράγματι τοῦτο οὐ ποιεῖ

倘若你在此地成了牧者與院長，你必定能造就人、拯救人，並將自己的美德分給他們，因為某某弟兄在此事上並不如此行。

If you were to become a shepherd and superior here, you would surely be able to profit and to save others, and to impart to them your own virtues, since such-and-such a brother does not do this in the matter.

Εἰ δέ καί γνώριμος τοῖς κατά κόσμον ἐστίν, ὑποβάλλει αὐτῷ ὅτι·

倘若他又為世人所認識，仇敵便向他暗示說：

And if he is also known to those of the world, he suggests to him this:

Καί πολλούς ἄν ἑλκύσαι εἶχες πρός τήν μοναχικήν πολιτείαν καί ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτούς ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου, καί στόμα ἄν ἐγένου Χριστοῦ·

你必能吸引許多人歸入修道的生活，領他們出離世界，你就成了基督的口；

You would be able to draw many to the monastic way of life and to lead them out of the world, and you would become a mouth of Christ;

ὁ γάρ ἐξάγων, φησί, τίμιον ἐξ ἀναξίου ὡς στόμα μου ἔσται

因為經上說：「你若將寶貴的從卑賤的中間分別出來，你就可以當作我的口。」

for it is said, 'He who brings forth the precious from the vile shall be as My mouth.'

1:1685

Εἶχον δέ προσαγαγεῖν οἱ τοιοῦτοι καί ἀποταγάς μεγάλας καί τάς ὑποστάσεις αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ μονῇ ἐπιδοῦναι, καί προστεθῆναι εἶοχε τό μοναστήριον καί οἷον τοῦ μεγάλου Εὐθυμίου καί Σάβα καί Παχωμίου τῶν ἁγίων γενέσθαι

這樣的人還能帶來重大的棄絕，將自己的產業奉獻給修道院，修道院便得以擴充，成為像偉大的聖徒歐提繆、聖撒巴、聖帕科繆那樣的院。

Such men would also be able to bring great renunciations and to bestow their possessions upon the monastery, and the monastery would grow and become like that of the great and holy Euthymius and Sabas and Pachomius.

Ἀλλά γάρ πρός τούτοις καί αὐτός περισσοτέραν ταπείνωσιν εἶχες κτήσασθαι, ἵνα ἔβλεπον καί ἐμιμοῦντό σε οἱ ἀδελφοί, () ὡς γάρ ἔσχατον πάντων ἄν διῆγες ἐν τῇ μονῇ καί βαστάζειν εἶχες πάντων τά βάρη, πάντων τά ἐλαττώματα

而且除此之外，你自己還能得著更大的謙卑，使弟兄們能看見你並效法你；因為你必在修道院中作眾人中最末後的一個，能擔當眾人的重擔、眾人的缺欠。

But moreover, in addition to these things, you yourself would be able to acquire greater humility, so that the brethren might see you and imitate you; for you would pass your time in the monastery as the last of all, and you would be able to bear the burdens of all, the shortcomings of all.

1:1687

Καί οὕτως οὐ μόνον ὠφελήσας τούς πολλούς, ἀλλά καί αὐτός σύ ὠφελήθης μᾶλλον ψυχικῶς καί σωματικῶς εὗρες μεγάλην ἀνάπαυσιν

如此，你不但造就眾人，你自己反倒更多得著益處，並在靈魂和身體上都尋得大安息。

And thus you would not only benefit the many, but you yourself would rather be benefited, and you would find great rest both in soul and in body.

Ταῦτα τοίνυν ὑποβάλλει τοῖς δῆθεν ἀγωνιζομένοις ἐν τῷ σεμνείῳ

仇敵便將這些話暗示給那些貌似在隱修院中竭力操練的人。

These things, then, he suggests to those who are supposedly struggling ascetically in the monastery.

Ἄρχεται οὖν ἕκαστος αὐτῶν ἀποκαλύπτειν τόν ἴδιον λογισμόν πρός ὅν ἄν θαρρεῖ ἀδελφόν καί δῆθεν ὡς ἀστειαζόμενος καί μετριάζων, ἵνα μή καταγνωσθῇ ὡς φιλόδοξος, φησί·

於是他們每一個人便開始向自己所信任的弟兄透露自己的心思，並且裝作說笑、自貶的樣子，免得被人指為貪圖虛榮，說道：

Each of them therefore begins to disclose his own thought to whichever brother he trusts, and, as though jesting and belittling himself, so as not to be condemned as ambitious for glory, he says:

Ἄρτι, κῦρι ὁ δεῖνα, ἐάν ἐφρονοῦσαν οἱ ἀδελφοί, οὐ μή εἶχον ποιῆσαί με ἡγούμενον;

某某先生，如今若弟兄們有意，豈不能立我作院長麼？

Now, sir so-and-so, if the brethren were minded, would they not be able to make me superior?

Ὁ δέ ἴσως ἀποκρίνεται καί λέγει·

那一位或許回答說：

And the other perhaps answers and says:

Πίστευσόν μοι, πάτερ, σύ μέν, οἶδα ὅτι μετριάζεις, ἐπεί πρό πολλοῦ τοῦτο χρόνου ἐνεθυμούμην ἐγώ, ἀλλ εὐλαβούμην εἰπεῖν σοι περί τούτου, ἵνα μήπως ὡς τά παρά γνώμην σου λαλοῦντά μοι μέμψῃ

父啊，請你相信我，論到你，我知道你是在自謙，因為很久以前我自己也在思量此事，只是我遲疑，不敢向你提起，恐怕你責備我，以為我所說的違背你的心意。

Believe me, father, as for you, I know that you are belittling yourself, since long ago I too was pondering this, but I was hesitant to speak to you about it, lest you should reproach me as one speaking to you against your own inclination.

Πίστευσον, οὐ χρήζω γενέσθαι, ἀλλ ἵνα μή ἀδιάφορός τις γένηται καί τό μοναστήριον καταστρέψῃ καί τούς ἀδελφούς λυπήσῃ, ἐάν ἤθελον οἱ ἀδελφοί ἵνα ἐγενόμην, καί πάντως ποιῆσαι εἶχον σέ οἰκονόμον, τόν δεῖνα καί δεῖνα κελλαρίτην καί ἀποθηκάριον, ἐγώ δέ ἐσχόλαζον πάντως εἰς μόνα τά ψυχικά καί ἵνα ἤμην ἀπό τῶν πραγμάτων ἐλεύθερος

請相信我，我並不需要作此職；只是恐怕有那漠不關心的人作了，敗壞了修道院，叫弟兄們憂愁。倘若弟兄們願意我作，我必立你為管家，立某某和某某為司膳和司庫，我自己則專心單顧靈性的事，好使我脫離俗務。

Believe me, I have no need to become it; but only lest some indifferent person become it and overthrow the monastery and grieve the brethren. If the brethren wished that I should become it, I would certainly appoint you as steward, and so-and-so and so-and-so as cellarer and storekeeper, while I would devote myself entirely to spiritual matters alone, that I might be free from affairs.

1:1694

ταῦτα ὁ ἀδελφός καί ὅτι οἰκονόμον μέλλει τοῦτον ποιεῖν, καί ἀπελθών θαρρεῖ ταῦτα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς οὕς εἶπε ποιήσειν διακονητάς

那弟兄便以為這人要立他作管家，就去把這些話坦然告訴他所提說要立為執事的弟兄們。

So the brother thinks that this man is going to make him steward, and going off, he confidently tells these things to the brethren whom he said he would make his ministers.

1:1695

Ταῦτα τοίνυν καί τρεῖς ἐκ τῶν εὐλαβεστέρων ἴσως ποιοῦσιν, ἀγνοοῦντες τάς μεθόδους τοῦ πονηροῦ·

這些事，或許連三個較為虔敬的人也如此行，因為他們不曉得那惡者的詭計；

These things, then, perhaps even three of the more devout do, being ignorant of the wiles of the evil one;

τοῖς δέ γε σαρκικωτέροις καί ἀμελῶς ἔχουσι () περί τήν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν ταῦτα ὑποβάλλει καί ὑποτίθησιν ὁ ἐχθρός, τήν τρυφήν, τήν δόξαν καί τήν παρά πάντων τιμήν

至於那些更屬肉體、對自己救恩漠不關心的人，仇敵便向他們暗示並提議這些：宴樂、榮耀，以及眾人的尊敬。

but to those who are more carnal and negligent concerning their own salvation, the enemy suggests and proposes these things: luxury, glory, and honour from all.

Εἰ γάρ μή τοῦτο ποιήσεις, μέλλεις πάντως δεδεμέναις χερσί τῷ γενομένῳ παρίστασθαι καί ἀτιμάζεσθαι παρ αὐτοῦ

因為你若不如此行，你必定要束著手站在那作院長的人面前，受他的羞辱。

For if you do not do this, you will surely have to stand before the one who becomes superior with bound hands and be dishonoured by him.

1:1698

Ἀλλά γάρ καί ἐποχούμενος ἔσται ἐκεῖνος ἐν ἡμιόνοις πολυτίμοις, σύ δέ πεζοπορῶν ἔσῃ καί κοπιῶν·

並且那人必騎著貴重的騾子，你卻要步行勞苦；

But moreover, that man will be riding upon costly mules, while you will be going on foot and toiling;

ἐκείνῳ διάφορος ἑτοιμασθήσεται τράπεζα καί ἄρτος ὡσαύτως καί οἶνος, σοί δέ ἡ λαχανώδης καί σπερματώδης καί τοῖς πᾶσι κοινή

為他必預備上好的席，同樣有餅有酒，為你卻只是那菜蔬、種籽之類、眾人所共用的粗食。

for him a distinguished table will be prepared, and likewise bread and wine, but for you the food of herbs and seeds, common to all.

1:1700

Ἐκεῖνος καθεσθήσεται ἐπί θρόνου καί πρῶτος, σύ δέ μέσον τῶν ἄλλωνἤ καί τῶν λοιπῶν ἔσχατος·

那人必坐在寶座上居首位，你卻要在眾人中間，甚或在其餘的人中作末後的一個；

That man will sit upon a throne and be first, while you will be in the midst of the others, or even the last of the rest;

1:1701

ἀγαπᾷ γάρ διαφερόντως τόν δεῖνα, καί εἰ γένηται ἡγούμενος, ὑπέρ σέ τιμήσας ἐπάνω σου προκαθίσει αὐτόν, καί πῶς βαστάσεις τήν αἰσχύνην τῶν ἀδεφλῶν;

因為他格外愛某某，倘若那人作了院長，他既尊他過於你，必叫他坐在你前頭；你又怎能擔當在弟兄們面前的羞辱呢？

for he loves so-and-so exceedingly, and if that one becomes superior, having honoured him above you, he will seat him ahead of you; and how will you bear the shame before the brethren?

1:1702

Οὐ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί ὁ δεῖνα εὐλαβέστερός σού ἐστι, καί ἴσως παρ ἐκείνου προτιμηθῇ;

不但如此，某某比你更虔敬，或許他要被高舉在你以上。

And not only that, but so-and-so is more devout than you, and perhaps he will be preferred before you.

1:1703

Ἔτι δέ ἴσως καί ἀπό τῶν ἐμφανῶν καί ἐνδόξων ἀποκεῖραι ἔχει, καί μέλλουσιν ἐκεῖνον μέν τιμᾶν ὡς ἡγούμενον, ἐκεῖνος δέ πάλιν ἐκείνους ὡς ἀξιωματικούς καί ὡς ἀποκαρέντας παρ αὐτοῦ τιμῆσει καί σοῦ ὑπερκαθίσει αὐτούς, σέ δέ εἰς τό διαζύγιον ἀπολύσειἤ καί παντελῶς ἵστασθαί σε καί διακονεῖν προτρέψεται

還有，或許他甚至要為那些顯赫尊貴的人剃度，他們必尊他為院長，他又要回過來尊他們為有位分的、為他親自剃度的人，叫他們坐在你以上，卻要打發你去分離之地，或竟強迫你站立服事。

Furthermore, perhaps he will even tonsure men from among the notable and distinguished, and they will honour that one as superior, and he in turn will honour them as dignitaries and as ones tonsured by himself, and will seat them above you, and will dismiss you to divorcement, or will altogether compel you to stand and to serve.

1:1704

Καί πρός ταῦτα τί ἄρα μέλλεις ποιεῖν;

面對這些事，你又要怎樣行呢？

And in the face of these things, what then are you going to do?

1:1705

εἰσί γάρ οἱ ἀγαπῶντες αὐτόν καί εὐθύς ἐπιστομίσουσί σε

因為有愛他的人，他們必立刻堵住你的口。

For there are those who love him, and they will straightway silence you.

1:1706

Τάχα δέ ἴσως καί τύψουσί σε ἀντιλέγοντα, καί χείρων ἔσται ἡ ἀτιμία

或許他們甚至要因你反駁而打你，這羞辱便更甚了。

And perhaps they will even strike you for contradicting them, and the dishonour will be worse.

1:1707

Ὑποχωρῆσαι τῆς μονῆς κατάγνωσίς σού ἐστι, καί πᾶς ἄνθρωπος καταγελάσεται καί καταμέμψεταί σε, καί οὐδέ εὑρήσεις ἀλλαχοῦ ἀνάπαυσιν·

至於離開修道院，這是對你的定罪，人人都要譏笑你、責備你，你在別處也尋不著安息；

To withdraw from the monastery is a condemnation of you, and every man will laugh at you and reproach you, and you will find rest nowhere else;

1:1708

ἔνθα γάρ ἀπέλθῃς, ὡς ξενοκουρίτης πάντων ἔσχατος εἶναι ὀφείλεις

因為無論你往哪裡去，作一個外來的流蕩者，你必是眾人中末後的一個。

for wherever you go, as a wandering newcomer you must be the last of all.

1:1709

Ὑπομένειν ταῦτα καί εἶναι ἐν τῇ μονῇ σου οὐ δύνασαι

你無法忍受這些事，又留在你的修道院中。

You cannot endure these things and remain in your monastery.

1:1710

Λοιπόν οὖν πάσῃ δυνάμει ἀγώνισαι μή νικήσῃ τις τῶν εὐλαβεστέρων

所以你當竭盡全力爭取，不叫那些較為虔敬的人得勝。

Therefore, with all your might strive that none of the more devout may prevail.

1:1711

() Εἶτα σκέπτεται καί λέγει ἐν ἑαυτῷ·

於是他就思量，在心裡對自己說：

Then he considers and says within himself:

Ἀλλ ἀπελθών ἐγώ τόν δεῖνα κρατήσω ἀδελφόν καί τόν δεῖνα·

我要去拉住某某弟兄和某某弟兄；

But I will go and take hold of brother so-and-so and so-and-so;

1:1713

αὐτοί γάρ τρυφᾶν ἀγαπῶσι, παίζειν τε καί χαίρεσθαι καί τῆς μονῆς ἐξέρχεσθαι συνεχῶς καί διάγειν ἐν οἷς θέλουσιν

因為他們喜愛宴樂、玩耍、歡娛，又常常出離修道院，隨自己所願的度日。

for they love to indulge in luxury, to play and to make merry, and to go out of the monastery continually and to spend their time in whatever they wish.

1:1714

Αὐτοῖς οὖν καί συντάξομαι

我就要與他們結盟。

With them, then, I will make my compact.

1:1715

Ἄλλως τε καί ὅσα ἄν μοι εἴπωσι, καί αὐτοί ἀγωνίσονται σπουδαίως ἵνα ἡγούμενος γένωμαι

再者，無論他們向我求甚麼，他們也必殷勤竭力，好叫我作院長。

Besides, whatever they may ask of me, they too will strive earnestly that I may become superior.

1:1716

Τοιγαροῦν καί ἀπελθών, οὕτω κατά τήν ματαίαν αὐτοῦ μελέτην καί ποιεῖ

於是他就去，照著他那虛妄的謀算而行。

Accordingly, going off, he acts thus according to his vain scheme.

1:1717

Φησί δέ καί τοῦτο πρός ἑαυτόν·

他又對自己說：

And he says this also to himself:

Ὁ δεῖνα ἀδελφός εὐλαβής ἐστι καί τοῦ πράγματος τούτου οὐ χρήζει, ἔχει δέ συγγενεῖς καί φίλους καί βούλεται θεραπεύειν αὐτούς ἀπό τῆς μονῆς

某某弟兄是虔敬的，並不需要這職分，但他有親屬和朋友，想要從修道院供應他們。

Brother so-and-so is devout and has no need of this office, but he has kinsmen and friends and wishes to provide for them from the monastery.

1:1719

Ἀπελθών λαλήσω κἀκείνῳ, καί ὁμοίως συντάξομαι

我要去也與他說，同樣與他結盟。

I will go and speak with him too, and likewise make my compact.

1:1720

Περιέρχεται οὖν τό μοναστήριον συνεχῶς καί ἁπλῶς ἕκαστον παρακαλῶν κατ ἰδίαν καί συντασσόμενος πληρῶσαι πάντων τά καταθύμια ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ καί τρόμῳ ὑπάρχει πολλῷ, φόβῳ τοῦ μή ἀποτυχεῖν τοῦ σκοποῦ

他便不住地在修道院中周旋，一味私下懇求各人，與眾人立約，要成全人人的心願，卻活在極大的焦慮戰兢中，惟恐達不到自己的目的。

So he goes about the monastery continually, and simply entreating each one privately and making compacts to fulfil the heart's desires of all, he exists in great anxiety and trembling, in fear of failing his purpose.

1:1721

Ἐκ τούτων οὖν καί ἑτέρων πολλῶν σχίσματα, διχόνοιαι καί στάσεις γίνονται ἐν τῷ μοναστηρίῳ πολλαί, τῶν μέν εὐλαβεστέρων πρός τό καί ἑαυτούς καί ἄλλους ὠφελῆσαι σπευδόντων, τῶν δέ σαρκικωτέρων τήν ἑαυτῶν μόνον δόξαν ζητούντων, τό πρόσκαιρον κέρδος καί τάς τοῦ σώματος ἡδονάς, τοῦ δέ λοιποῦ πλήθους ζητοῦντος κατά τάς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας τόν ἄγοντα καί τῷ ὁμοίῳ προστρέχοντος

由這些事並許多別的事，修道院中就生出許多分裂、紛爭與紛擾：那較為虔敬的人切望造就自己也造就別人，那更屬肉體的人只求自己的榮耀、暫時的利益和身體的享樂，其餘的眾人則各按自己的私慾尋求領袖，投奔與自己相同的人。

From these things, then, and from many others, many schisms, dissensions, and strifes arise in the monastery: the more devout being eager to profit both themselves and others, the more carnal seeking only their own glory, temporary gain, and the pleasures of the body, while the rest of the multitude seeks a leader according to their own desires and runs to whoever is like themselves.

1:1722

Σύ οὖν, πνευματικέ άδελφέ, ἄκουσον μετά προσοχῆς, παρακαλῶ, τῶν ἐμῶν ῥημάτων·

所以，屬靈的弟兄啊，我求你留心聽我的話；

You therefore, spiritual brother, listen attentively, I beseech you, to my words;

1:1723

οὐ γάρ ἀπ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλήσω, ἀλλ ἅπερ ὁ μόνος σοφός καί εὔσπλαχνος λαλῆσαι θελήσει σοι

因為我不是憑自己說，乃是那獨一有智慧、滿有憐憫者所願意向你說的。

for I will not speak of myself, but whatever the only wise and compassionate One shall be willing to speak to you.

1:1724

() Ἐάν ᾖς ἐν κοινοβίῳ ἀδελφῶν καθεζόμενος, κατά τοῦ ἀποκείραντός σε πατρός μή θελήσῃς γενέσθαι ποτέ, εἰ καί πορνεύοντα, εἰ καί μεθύοντα βλέπεις αὐτόν καί τῷ δοκεῖν σοι κακῶς τά τῆς μονῆς διεξάγοντα πράγματα, εἰ τύπτεσαι καί ἀτιμάζεσαι παρ αὐτοῦ καί πολλαῖς ἄλλαις καθυποβάλλεσαι θλίψεσι

你若安居在弟兄們的公修院中，切不可存意起來敵擋那為你剃度的父親，縱然你看見他行淫、醉酒，並且照你看來把修道院的事管理得極壞，縱然你被他責打、羞辱，又遭受許多別的患難。

If you are settled in a coenobium of brethren, never desire to rise up against the father who tonsured you, even if you see him committing fornication, even drunken, and, as it seems to you, mismanaging the affairs of the monastery badly, even if you are beaten and dishonoured by him and subjected to many other afflictions.

1:1725

Μή συγκαθεσθῇς τοῖς λοιδοροῦσιν αὐτόν, μηδέ πορευθῇς μετά τῶν μελετησάντων κατ αὐτοῦ

不可與辱罵他的人同坐，也不可與那些謀害他的人同行。

Do not sit together with those who revile him, nor go along with those who have plotted against him.

1:1726

Ὑπόμεινον δέ αὐτόν μέχρι τέλους μηδέν περιεργαζόμενος τῶν ἐκείνου κακῶν

總要忍耐他到底，絲毫不去探究他的惡行。

But bear with him to the end, meddling in none of his evil deeds.

1:1727

Ὅσα οὖν ἀγαθά βλέπεις ποιοῦντα αὐτόν, βάλε ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καί ἐκείνων μόνων βιάζου μιμνήσκεσθαι·

凡你看見他所行的善事，都要存在心裡，勉力單單記念這些；

Whatever good things you see him doing, lay them up in your heart and force yourself to remember these alone;

1:1728

ὅσα δέ ἀπρεπῆ καί κακάἤ ἐργαζόμενονἤ λέγοντα ἴδῃς, ταῦτα σευτῷ ἐπίγραφε καί ὡς ἴδιά σου ἁμαρτήματα λογίζου καί μετανόει ἐν δάκρυσιν, ἔχων ὡς ἅγιον ἐκεῖνον καί ἐπικαλούμενος τήν εὐχήν αὐτοῦ

至於你看見他所行所說一切不合宜、邪惡的事，都要歸在自己身上，算作你自己的罪過，流淚悔改，仍以他為聖，並求告他的代禱。

but whatever unseemly and evil things you see him doing or saying, ascribe these to yourself and reckon them as your own sins, and repent with tears, holding him as holy and calling upon his prayer.

1:1729

Εἰ δέ συμβῇ αὐτῷ θάνατος, καί ἕτερον προβαλέσθαι ἡγούμενον οἱ ἀδελφοί βούλονται, πρόσεχε ἐάν γινώσκῃ σου ἡ συνείδησις ἴσον σου εἶναι ἀδελφόν τινα τῆς μονῆςἤ καί μείζονα λόγῳ καί ἔργῳ καί πράξεσιν ἀγαθαῖς, καί διά τοῦτο παρά τῶν ἀδελφῶν εἰς ἡγούμενον προτιμώμενον

倘若他遭遇死亡，弟兄們想要另立一人作院長，你要謹慎：你的良心若知道有某弟兄與你相等，或在言語、行為和善行上甚至超過你，並因此被弟兄們選為院長，

But if death should befall him, and the brethren wish to set forward another as superior, take heed: if your conscience knows that some brother of the monastery is your equal, or even greater in word and work and in good deeds, and is on that account preferred by the brethren for superior,

Μή θελήσῃς γενέσθαι ἀντίχριστος, τῇ βουλῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ δηλαδή καί τῷ ἀδελφῶν ἀντικείμενος, τῷ ἀγαθῷ καί χρηστῷ, λόγους λαλῶνἤ ἔργα ἐπιτηδεύων ὁπωσοῦν σκανδάλου καί ὑπονοίας, ὡς ἄν ἀποστάσῃς τινάς τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐκ τῆς πρός ἐκεῖνον ἀγάπης καί πίστεως, ἀλλά πάσῃ χαρᾷ καί ταπεινώσει κατάδεξαι καί συνέργησον καθαρῶς τῇ θελήσει τῶν ἀδελφῶν

你切不可存意作敵基督者，就是敵擋神的旨意和弟兄們的意思，敵擋那良善慈和的人，說話或設法行事以致引起絆跌與猜疑，使弟兄中有人從對那人的愛與信中被引離；乃要滿心喜樂謙卑地領受，純全地與弟兄們的心願同工。

do not desire to become an antichrist, that is, one opposing the counsel of God and of the brethren, opposing him who is good and kind, speaking words or contriving deeds in any way of scandal and suspicion, so as to turn away some of the brethren from their love and faith toward that one; but with all joy and humility accept it, and cooperate purely with the will of the brethren.

Εἰ δέ καί εὐλαβέστερον ἄλλον παρά τόν ψηφιζόμενον ἐπίστασαι εἶναι, εἰπέ τῷ μελλόντι γίνεσθαι ἀδελφῷ κατ ἰδίαν·

倘若你知道另有一人比那被選的更虔敬，就當私下對那將要作院長的弟兄說：

But if you know that another is more devout than the one being elected, say privately to the brother who is about to become it:

Κῦρι ἀδελφέ, σύ Θεοῦ χάριτι εὐλαβής ὑπάρχεις καί πνευματικός, () καί καθώς ἐπίστασαι, πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖν ὀφείλομεν καί εἰς σωτηρίαν τῶν ἡμετέρων ψυχῶν

弟兄先生，你靠神的恩典是虔敬屬靈的，並且如你所知，我們凡事都當為著神的榮耀而行，也為著我們靈魂的救恩。

Sir brother, by the grace of God you are devout and spiritual, and as you know, we ought to do all things unto the glory of God and unto the salvation of our souls.

你也知道我們的弟兄某某是虔敬、有美德的。

And you know that our brother so-and-so is devout and virtuous.
