5:1
De communim utriusque haeretici sententia et condemnatione. 1.
Concerning the common opinion and condemnation of both heretics. 1. Now, in the very accusation of the chapters which were then objected against the same Pelagius, this also was contained, among other detestable things which his disciple Coelestius held: that is, 'Infants, even if they are not baptized, have eternal life.' 2. That chapter too, which is set down above, we have recorded as being held by Coelestius and as being agreeable to the doctrine of his master, that is, 'That the Law sends to the kingdom of heaven, just as the Gospel'; this Pelagius in certain of his writings openly confirms and proclaims. 3.
5:2
Denique libellus est ejus, quem habemus in manibus, ad quamdam e Livaniam viduam, sermo· nem continens exhortatorium, in quo ita habetur; « Simplicitatem, inquit, sequi Christi famulam decet: non hanc quae stultitia magis est quam simplicitas, sed illam de qua scripsit [ Baluz. Scriptura dicit ]: a Benedicta anima omnis simplex ( Proverb · xi, 27, sec. Septuag.); dicente alibi Scriptura: Maledictus omnis homo qui non permanet in omnibus quae scri- pta sunt in libro legis, ut faciat ea ( Deut. xxvii, 26). Hinc, inquit, ostenditur non esse simplicitatem veram quae Dei mandata insensata securitate contemnit, sed eam quae legis praecepta sapienti timore custodit;
末了,他有一本小書,我們手中有的,是寫給一位名叫利瓦尼亞的寡婦的,內含一篇勸勉的講論,其中這樣寫著:他說,「基督的婢女當追求單純——不是那種與其說是單純,不如說是愚拙的單純,乃是那有經上所記的:凡單純的魂都是有福的(箴十一27,按七十士譯本);經上在別處又說:凡不常照律法書上所記一切之事去行的,必受咒詛(申二十七26)。」他說,「由此顯明,真正的單純並非那種以無知的安逸藐視神誡命的,乃是那種以智慧的敬畏謹守律法之命令的;
Finally, there is a little book of his, which we have in our hands, addressed to a certain widow Livania, containing a hortatory discourse, in which it stands thus: 'It becomes the handmaid of Christ,' he says, 'to follow simplicity—not that which is folly rather than simplicity, but that of which it is written: Blessed is every simple soul (Prov. 11:27, according to the Septuagint); Scripture saying elsewhere: Cursed is every man who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them (Deut. 27:26). Hence,' he says, 'it is shown that the true simplicity is not that which despises the commandments of God with senseless security, but that which keeps the precepts of the law with a wise fear;
5:3
dicente enim, maledictum esse eum qui non permanet in his quae scripta sunt, a contrario benedictum esse non vult qui non omnia praecepta servaverit. Et si omnis simplex benedictus est, ergo simplex ille est qui omnia praecepti b legis implerent. » 4. Asserere hunc illud, quod toties jam superius dictum est, « Ad regnum coelorum libros Moysis, sicut Evangelium mittere, » nullus catholicorum, qui hoc capitulum legerit, dubitat, nec intelligendo difficultatem aliquam poterit sustinere. Et quia in- discrete legem in eodem impiissimo capitulo nomi- navit, quod si Mosaicam, cujus testimonium male- dicti posuit, e aperte nos in Judaismum attrahere tentat;
因為既說那不常照所記之事而行的人必受咒詛,反過來,他便不願那未曾謹守一切命令的人成為有福的。並且,凡單純的人若是有福的,那麼遵行律法一切命令的人,才是那單純人。」第四節。這人主張那上面屢次所說的,即「摩西的書引人進天國,正如福音一樣」,凡讀過此條目的大公教徒都不懷疑,他在領會此事時,也不能承受任何難處。並且因為他在那同一極不虔的條目中無分別地稱呼律法,他既引述了咒詛的見證,便公然企圖把我們拉入猶太教,引向摩西律法;
for since it is said that he is cursed who does not continue in those things which are written, conversely he does not wish him to be blessed who has not kept all the precepts. And if every simple person is blessed, then he is the simple one who would fulfill all the precepts of the law.' 4. That this man asserts that which has so often been said above, namely 'That the books of Moses send to the kingdom of heaven, just as the Gospel,' no Catholic who has read this chapter doubts, nor will he, in understanding it, be able to bear any difficulty. And because in that same most impious chapter he named the law indiscriminately, if he openly attempts to draw us into Judaism by the Mosaic law, of which he set down the testimony of the curse;
5:4
quod si, ad tegendum se per fallaciam, legis nomine Evangelium se dixerit nominasse, d in eo quidem quod legem Evangelium appellat, non errat. e Sed in eo est impius, in quo sub (??) simili et aequali nos, qui sub Evangelio sumus, maledicto constituere non pertimescit, exaequans legi circumcisionis et omni Judaismo evangelicam gratiam: unde etiam discipulus ejus Coelestinus aperte ausus est pronun- tiare: « Legem sic mittere ad regna coelorum, sicut Evangelium. » 5. Manifestum est enim, secundum Pelagium, quia si sub eodem vel simili adhuc sumus vinculo, etiam sub Evangelii tempore;
但若他為了用詭詐遮掩自己,竟說他是以「律法」之名稱呼福音,那麼就「他把律法稱作福音」這一點而言,他確實沒有錯。然而他在這件事上卻是不敬虔的:他竟不懼怕將我們這些在福音之下的人置於同樣、同等的咒詛之下,把福音的恩典與割禮的律法以及全部猶太主義等量齊觀。因此他的門徒哥勒斯提努也公然膽敢宣稱:「律法引人進天國,正如福音一樣。」五、因為照伯拉糾所言,顯然可見:若我們即使在福音的時代仍處於同樣或相似的捆綁之下;
But if, to cover himself by a deception, he should say that he called the Gospel by the name of the Law, then indeed in this—that he calls the Law 'Gospel'—he does not err. Yet in this he is impious, that he does not fear to place us who are under the Gospel under a like and equal curse, equating the grace of the Gospel with the law of circumcision and with all Judaism. Hence also his disciple Coelestinus openly dared to declare: 'The Law sends to the kingdom of heaven just as the Gospel does.' 5. For it is manifest that, according to Pelagius, if we are still under the same or a like bond even under the time of the Gospel;
5:5
and if, as men, we have erred in anything, or have failed to fulfil even one of the precepts of the Gospel, then we are accursed. But if it be so—which God forbid, yet granting it to be said as he wishes—then the Gospel has been equated with the old Law; and where then will stand the saying of the Apostle Paul: 'Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, for it is written (Deut. 27:26): Cursed is every man who does not abide in all the things that are written in the book of the law, to do them' (Gal. 3:10). 6. Moreover, descending further, he pursues this very same sense at greater length in the same discourse of this little book, and at greater length commends it. For after many things he there says:
5:6
'To hate, to curse, to envy, to lie, to slander, and to believe slanderers, is reckoned a slight sin or none at all; but those who think this have forgotten that we read that those guilty even of a slight precept are to be delivered over to hell. For it is manifest,' he says, 'that the Lord has said: Whosoever shall say to his brother, Thou fool, or Raca, shall be liable to hell-fire.'
