7:1
CUI TITULUS EST IN ANTIQUIS EXEMPLARIBUS a Commonitorium lectori adversus haeresim Pelagii et Coelestii, vel etiam scripta Juliani a Mario Mercatore servo Christi. 1. Quaestio centra catholicam fidem apud b non- nullos Syrorum, et e praecipue in Cilicia a Theodoro quondam episcopo oppidi d Mopsuesteni e jamdudum mota, nunc usque penes paucos eorum admodum ecculte [ Baluz, omi. occulte] roditur, f nec ea palam profertur; sed ah ipsis qui de ea g cornicantur vel- ut catholicis h intra Ecclesias, interim retinetur, (??) i Progenitores videlicet humani generis, Adam et Evam, mortales a Deo creatos, nec quemquam po- sterorum sui praevaricatione transgressi laesisse;
其在古抄本中的標題為:基督的僕人馬利烏‧默卡多所著,致讀者的勸誡書,駁斥伯拉糾與哥勒斯提的異端,以及駁斥猶利安的著作。一、一個敵對大公信仰的問題,早先在某些敘利亞人中、尤其在基利家由曾任摩普綏提亞城主教的西奧多所掀起,至今仍在他們中間少數人裡極隱祕地被暗中啃齧著,並未公開提出;卻被那些彷彿自稱大公信徒、在眾教會中對此鼓噪不已的人,暫時保留著——即:人類的始祖亞當和夏娃乃是被神造為必死的,並且他們以自己的過犯並未傷及他們任何後裔;
WHOSE TITLE IN THE ANCIENT COPIES IS: A Commonitorium to the reader against the heresy of Pelagius and Coelestius, and also against the writings of Julian, by Marius Mercator, servant of Christ. 1. A question against the catholic faith, raised long ago among certain of the Syrians, and especially in Cilicia by Theodore, formerly bishop of the town of Mopsuestia, is even now very secretly gnawed at among a few of them, nor is it brought forth openly; but it is meanwhile retained by those very men who croak about it as though they were catholics within the Churches—namely, that the progenitors of the human race, Adam and Eve, were created mortal by God, and that they injured none of their posterity by their own transgression;
7:2
but harmed only themselves, and made themselves guilty of the command before God, and no other at all. 2. This inept question, and no less hostile to right faith, Rufinus, a certain man, by nation a Syrian, first brought to Rome under Anastasius, of holy memory, supreme pontiff of the Roman Church; and, crafty as he was, fortifying himself against the odium of it and not daring to bring it forth through himself, he then deceived Pelagius, a Briton by race, at that time a monk, and thoroughly imbued and instructed him in the aforesaid impious vanity. 3. This man (or: Who), having soon dared to compose Commentaries on the Apostle Paul, when he had come to that most well-known passage of the Epistle to the Romans, where it is thus contained:
7:3
Propterea sicut per unum hominem peccatum intravit in hunc mundum, et per peccatum mors, et ita in omnes homines pertransiit, etc. ( Rom. v, 12), ibidem eos tantum reos dixit, atque obnoxios illa praevaricatione teneri, qui hunc in praevarican- dis Dei mandatis voluerint imitari: non omnes, qui ex ejus sunt per successionum seriem semine gene- rati; atque hinc latius de sequentibus locis hujus Epistolae disputat, et pronuntiat nullum hominem [ Baluz. hominum] prorsus per generationem laesum fuisse, nec laedi Adae peccati transgressione;
「因此,正如罪藉著一人入了世界,死又藉著罪而來,於是死就臨到眾人」等等(羅五12)——他在那裡說,惟有那些甘願在違犯神命令上效法此人(亞當)的人,才因那過犯被算為有罪、被視為當受刑罰:並非凡藉世代相承從他精液所生的眾人;並由此更廣泛地辯論這書信後續的經文,且斷言:絕無一人因生而受傷,也無人因亞當之罪的過犯而受傷;
'Therefore, as by one man sin entered into this world, and by sin death, and so it passed upon all men,' etc. (Rom. 5:12)—there he said that only those are held guilty and liable by that transgression who shall have willed to imitate this man in transgressing God's commands: not all who are begotten of his seed through the series of successions; and from this he disputes more broadly concerning the subsequent passages of this Epistle, and pronounces that no man whatever was injured by generation, nor is injured, by the transgression of Adam's sin;
7:4
« Sed imitatione, inquit, quia prior illa in genere humano peccavit, et illum reum et obnoxium fieri, qui hunc propria voluntate, non nascendo, sed peccando fue- rit imitatus, » 4. Huic Pelagio adhaesit e Coelestius, nobilis natu quidem, el illius (emporis auditorialis scholasticus a, sed naturae vitio eunuchus matris utero editus. Hic a Pelagio instructus sensum istum impiissimum me- racius imbibit, ac b multos incredibili loquacitate amentiae hujus suae participes et complices fecit.
「乃是藉著效法,」他說,「因為那女人在人類中首先犯罪;並且那憑自己意志效法此人的——不是藉著出生,而是藉著犯罪——才被算為有罪、當受刑罰。」四、哥勒斯提依附了這伯拉糾,此人出身誠然高貴,是當時的訴訟律師,卻因天生缺陷,生來即為閹人。他受伯拉糾教導,更深地汲取了這至為不敬虔的意念,並以難以置信的滔滔之言,使許多人成為他這瘋狂的同夥與共犯。五、他竟膽敢公然公開地在萬民中到處散播那人的意旨,以這些言詞之命題,即:「亞當被造為必死的,他無論犯罪或不犯罪,都是必死的;
'But by imitation,' he says, 'because she first sinned in the human race; and that he is made guilty and liable who has imitated this man by his own will—not by being born, but by sinning.' 4. To this Pelagius adhered Coelestius, a man indeed noble by birth, a forensic advocate of that time, but by a defect of nature a eunuch issued from his mother's womb. He, instructed by Pelagius, drank in this most impious notion more deeply, and by incredible loquacity made many partners and accomplices of this his madness. 5. For he dared openly and publicly to disseminate everywhere among the peoples the meaning of the same man in these sentences of words: that is, 'that Adam was made mortal, who, whether he sinned or did not sin, would have died;
7:5
'that Adam's sin injured himself alone, and not the human race; that infants who are born are in that state in which Adam was before the transgression; that neither does the whole race of men die through the death of Adam, because neither does the whole race of men rise through the resurrection of Christ; that infants, even if they are not baptized, have eternal life.' These five chapters generate one most impious and abominable opinion. He added moreover 'that a man can be without sin, and easily keep God's commands, since before the coming of Christ there were men without sin; and that the Law sends to the kingdom of heaven, just as the Gospel does.' 6.
7:6
7. Tunc contra pueriles ausus ejus sanctae recor- dationis e Augustinus episcopus diversis temporibus diversos condidit libros, ex quibus omnibus Julianus f unum de duobus primo tempore ad g Valerium editis elegit, cui quatuor libris a se ad h Turbantium absolutis contradiceret:
這些事以及諸如此類的事,也得了猶利安自己和他其餘同袍的歡心。當這些事被揭發查明,並連同前述諸人被教會權柄定罪之後,它們又被猶利安以大量書卷加以辯護,他也樂於與伯拉糾和哥勒斯提一同被列為定罪中的第三人。七、那時,聖記念的奧古斯丁主教在不同時期針對他幼稚的妄論寫了不同的書;猶利安從這一切之中,揀選了起初寫給瓦勒里烏的兩部之一,要以自己寫成、致圖爾班提烏的四卷書去反駁;
These things and others of this kind pleased Julian himself too, and the rest of his comrades-in-arms. When these things, being made known and detected, had been condemned by ecclesiastical authority along with the aforesaid persons, they were also defended by Julian in a multitude of books, and it pleased him to be numbered as third in the condemnation along with Pelagius and Coelestius. 7. Then against his puerile presumptions, Augustine, bishop of holy memory, composed various books at various times; out of all of which Julian chose one of the two issued at the first time to Valerius, against which he might contradict in four books finished by himself addressed to Turbantius;
7:7
a sequenti vero uni octo ultimis voluminibus ad b Florum emissis respon- disse se jactat, fingens multos ejus sancti, viri super hac re alios elaboratos penitus ignorare. 8. Quibus c octo ultimis d horrida loquacitate evagatus, disertum se magis ostentare, et sciolum volens, post innumerabilia (??) conviciorum probra, quae in sanctum supradictum virum est jaculatus, haec impudenter, immo jam impie defendere [ Baluz. add. ausus est], quae a Pelagio Coelestioque eum in perniciem suam didicisse superius memoravimus;
而針對其次的那一部,他誇口說自己已用發給弗洛魯的最後八卷書作了答覆,卻假裝完全不知道那聖人在此事上還寫過許多其他的著作。八、他在這最後八卷中,以可怕的滔滔之言漫無邊際地遊蕩,既想顯出自己能言善辯、又一知半解,在向前述聖人投擲了無數辱罵的譴責之後,竟厚顏無恥地——不,如今乃是不敬虔地——膽敢辯護那些事,就是我們上面所提、他從伯拉糾和哥勒斯提那裡學來、以致自取滅亡之事;
and against the next one he boasts that he has replied with eight last volumes issued to Florus, pretending to be wholly ignorant that that holy man labored over many others on this matter. 8. In these eight last volumes, ranging about with dreadful loquacity, wishing to show himself eloquent and a smatterer, after innumerable reproaches of revilings which he hurled against the aforesaid holy man, he shamelessly—nay, now impiously—dared to defend those things which we mentioned above that he had learned from Pelagius and Coelestius to his own destruction;
7:8
although, just as already in the first four books, rolling over the same things and always the same, and prudently finding no way out, he filled his parchments or papers with insults and contumelies rather than with any reasoning of right faith. And whereas this question ought to have been treated with the utmost brevity and with the authority of the holy and divine Scriptures, he wrote for himself a great deal of distorted and altogether unnecessary material of loquacity, out of which he might both forge impious things and accomplish absolutely nothing. For he accomplishes nothing who devotes his labor to impiety. 9. The holy [add. yet]
7:9
tamen] saepe dictus epi- scopus Augustinus e sex suis libris quatuor priores illius avertit, octo quoque posteriores singulis res- ponsionibus suis ad singula capitula subjectis, sic vanos ejus et plumbeos pugiones malleo catholicae veritatis obludit, immo confregit. 10. Quod utriusque opus cum in manus nostras venisset, studiosius perlegi et intellexi [ Baluz. omit- tit studiosius perlegi et intellexi], quia tota summa inepti et magis impii Juliani laboris d ad unam pra- vam redigi videtur sententiam: (??) Adae videlicet et Evae transgressionem eos non fecisse mortales, nec noxam eorum ad posteros originaria successione transisse;
屢次提及的奧古斯丁主教,以他的六卷書推翻了那人前四卷,並同樣以附於各章的逐章答覆推翻了後八卷;如此,他用大公真理的鐵鎚擊倒——不,擊碎了——那人空洞而沉重如鉛的匕首。十、當二人的著作落到我們手中時,我更殷勤地讀完並領會了[巴呂茲本省略「更殷勤地讀完並領會了」],就是:猶利安那既愚拙又更為不敬虔之勞作的全部要旨,似乎可歸結為一個悖謬的論點:即亞當和夏娃的過犯並未使他們成為必死的,他們的禍害也未藉原初的世代相承傳給後裔;
oft-mentioned bishop Augustine overthrew with his six books the first four of that man's, and likewise the eight latter ones, by his individual replies subjoined to the individual chapters; thus he beat down—nay, shattered—the man's empty and leaden daggers with the hammer of catholic truth. 10. And when the work of both had come into our hands, I read it through more diligently and understood [Baluz. omits: read it through more diligently and understood], that the whole sum of the inept and rather impious labor of Julian seems to be reduced to one perverse opinion: namely, that the transgression of Adam and Eve did not make them mortal, nor did their harm pass to their posterity by original succession;
7:10
(??); 11. Hoc ergo, ut dixi, e totum opus, cum studio- sius perlegissem, breviter pro nostrarum virium fa- cultate, f Subnotationibus [ Baluz, add. ex] libris ejus, ubiubi opportunitas exegit, appositis, ego quo- que respondi, quo lector post tanti patris et magi- stri tubam, nostram etiam palearem fistulam non aspernatus assumere, tota intelligat brevitate Julia- num in elaborandis numerosissimis libris inanem et plenam potius jactantiae cum summa impietate ope- ram impendisse. 12.
but that one is made guilty only by imitation of those who shall have despised the divine commands. 11. This, then, as I said—the whole work, when I had read it through more diligently—I too replied to briefly, according to the measure of our strength, with Annotations [Baluz. add. from] his books appended wherever opportunity required, so that the reader, after the trumpet of so great a father and master, may not disdain to take up also our chaff-pipe, and may understand, with all brevity, that Julian, in laboring over his most numerous books, has expended empty effort—and rather full of boasting along with the utmost impiety.
7:11
Sane quoniam easdem ipsas quas dixi Sub- notationes in unum corpus redigere me debere tu quoque, g venerande presbyter Pienti, jussisti, parvi imperatis non ignorans in maledicta et effre- natae illius linguae nos convicia incursuros. Sed quid possunt h extra [ Baluz, add. Dei] Ecclesiam alligati rabidi canis latratus? Gloriemur nos i tantis viris, tantisque ecclesiasticis doctoribus toto plane orbe fulgentibus, in quos ille tam inaudita, tam nefanda, tamque obscena atque atrocia maledicta jaculatur, participes ac socios fieri. 13.
誠然,可敬的長老皮恩提烏,既然你也吩咐我應當將我所說的這些批註匯集成一體,我便遵從你的命令,並非不知道我們將要遭受那人那受咒詛、肆無忌憚之舌的咒罵和辱罵。但被綁在神的教會之外、瘋狗般的吠叫又能有何用呢?願我們倒要誇口:我們得以成為如此偉大之人、如此偉大、在普天之下發光的教會教師的同夥與同伴——就是那人向他們投擲如此聞所未聞、如此可憎、如此污穢殘酷咒罵的那些人。十三、我確知他也將就章節的次序對我們發怒,並要說得比他平日更多,向我們掀起一場空洞的言辭喧囂;
Indeed, since you too, venerable presbyter Pientius, commanded that I ought to gather into one body those very Annotations of which I have spoken, I obey your commands, not unaware that we shall run into the curses and revilings of that man's accursed and unbridled tongue. But what can the rabid barkings of a dog tied up outside the Church of God avail? Let us rather glory that we are made partakers and associates of so great men and so great ecclesiastical doctors, shining throughout the whole world, against whom that man hurls such unheard-of, such abominable, such obscene and atrocious curses. 13. I know indeed that he will also be angry with us concerning the order of the chapters, and, by speaking more than is his wont, will stir up an empty din of words against us;
7:12
Subnotationes, ut jam diximus, pravis nos ejus sensibus partim [ Baluz. sparsim] ap- posuimus, vel admovimus; a non ullum adversus eum condidimus librum. 14. Ille sane curet de nobis Medio ceras implere capaces Quadrivio...., (Juv. Sat. 1.) nos cum ingenii tenuitate, fide christiana fundata, a mundi sane sapientibus longe semota, et exprobra- tiones ejus cum Patribus nostris et magistris patien- ter excipimus et exorbitationes illius a catholica veritate, divinis Scripturarum [ Baluz. add. nostra- rum] eloquiis, b non sophismatum arte, confutamus, convincimus et deflemus.
namely, accusing us that there is no order of our sayings against him. The Annotations, as we have already said, we appended in part [Baluz. scattered], or applied, to his perverse senses; we composed no book against him. 14. Let him indeed take care to fill his capacious wax-tablets with the middling 'Quadrivium' (Juvenal, Satire 1)... We, with the slenderness of our talent, founded upon the Christian faith, set far apart indeed from the wise of this world, both patiently endure his reproaches together with our Fathers and masters, and refute, convict, and bewail his straying from catholic truth—by the divine utterances of the Scriptures [Baluz. add. ours], not by the art of sophisms.
