6:1
וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃
ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει
Respondens autem Job, dixit :
ወእደ፡ ተናገረ፡ ኦየፐብ፡ ተሠጥወ፡ ከመዝ፡ ወይቤ።
Then Job answered,
6:2
ל֗וּ שָׁק֣וֹל יִשָּׁקֵ֣ל כַּעְשִׂ֑י (והיתי) [וְ֝הַוָּתִ֗י] בְּֽמֹאזְנַ֥יִם יִשְׂאוּ־יָֽחַד׃
εἰ γάρ τις ἱστῶν στήσαι μου τὴν ὀργήν τὰς δὲ ὀδύνας μου ἄραι ἐν ζυγῷ ὁμοθυμαδόν
Utinam appenderentur peccata mea quibus iram merui, et calamitas quam patior, in statera !
ሶበ፡ አሐዱ፡ እምኔክሙ፡ ይደልዋ፡ ለመቅሠፍትየ፡ ወይነሥኣ፡ ኅቡረ፡ በመዳልው፡ ለሕማምየ፡ እስመ፡ ይከብድ፡ እምኆፃ፡ ባሕር።
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
6:3
כִּֽי־עַתָּ֗ה מֵח֣וֹל יַמִּ֣ים יִכְבָּ֑ד עַל־כֵּ֝֗ן דְּבָרַ֥י לָֽעוּ׃
καὶ δὴ ἄμμου παραλίας βαρυτέρα ἔσται ἀλλ’ ὡς ἔοικεν τὰ ῥήματά μού ἐστιν φαῦλα
Quasi arena maris haec gravior appareret ; unde et verba mea dolore sunt plena :
ወባሕቱ፡ ሐሰተ፡ ይመሰል፡ ነገርየ፡ ዘእሙን፡ ወናሁ፡ አሕፃሁ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ ላዕለ፡ ሥጋየ፡ ወኅምዙ፡ ይሰርበኒ፡ ደምየ፡ ወሶበ፡ አእኅዝ፡ እንብብ፡ ይደጕጸኒ፡ ሥጋየ።
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas, therefore my words have been rash.
6:4
כִּ֤י חִצֵּ֪י שַׁדַּ֡י עִמָּדִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲ֭מָתָם שֹׁתָ֣ה רוּחִ֑י בִּעוּתֵ֖י אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַעַרְכֽוּנִי׃
βέλη γὰρ κυρίου ἐν τῷ σώματί μού ἐστιν ὧν ὁ θυμὸς αὐτῶν ἐκπίνει μου τὸ αἷμα ὅταν ἄρξωμαι λαλεῖν κεντοῦσί με
quia sagittae Domini in me sunt, quarum indignatio ebibit spiritum meum ; et terrores Domini militant contra me.
ቦኑ፡ ለከንቱ፡ ይነቁ፡ ሐለስትዮ፡ በውስተ፡ ሐመልማል፡ እኮኑየኃሥሥ፡ ዘይበልዕ፡ ወይነቁኑ፡ ላሕም፡ እንዘ፡ ይበልዕ፡ ውስተ፡ ኀል፡ ወይቀምሕ።
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.
6:5
הֲיִֽנְהַק־פֶּ֥רֶא עֲלֵי־דֶ֑שֶׁא אִ֥ם יִגְעֶה־שּׁ֝֗וֹר עַל־בְּלִילֽוֹ׃
τί γάρ μὴ διὰ κενῆς κεκράξεται ὄνος ἄγριος ἀλλ’ ἢ τὰ σῖτα ζητῶν εἰ δὲ καὶ ῥήξει φωνὴν βοῦς ἐπὶ φάτνης ἔχων τὰ βρώματα
Numquid rugiet onager cum habuerit herbam ? aut mugiet bos cum ante praesepe plenum steterit ?
አው፡ ይትበላዕኑ፡ እክል፡ ዘአንበለ፡ ፄው፡ ወቦኑ፡ ጣዕም፡ ለሐረፈ፡ ሐምል፡ ዘይሰመይ፡ ህጥሜ፡ ወቦኑ፡ ጣዕም፡ ለነገረ፡ ከንቱ።
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
6:6
הֲיֵאָכֵ֣ל תָּ֭פֵל מִבְּלִי־מֶ֑לַח אִם־יֶשׁ־טַ֝֗עַם בְּרִ֣יר חַלָּמֽוּת׃
εἰ βρωθήσεται ἄρτος ἄνευ ἁλός εἰ δὲ καὶ ἔστιν γεῦμα ἐν ῥήμασιν κενοῖς
aut poterit comedi insulsum, quod non est sale conditum ? aut potest aliquis gustare quod gustatum affert mortem ?
ኢይክል፡ አዕርፎ፡ ነፍስየ፡ ወእሬኢ፡ ንሰሐተ፡ ሥጋየ፡ ከመ፡ ብኍባኄ፡ አንበሳ፡፡ 7፡ ሶበ፡ ይመጽአኒ፡ ጸሎት፡ ወይሁበኒ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ተስፋየ።
Can that which has no flavor be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
6:7
מֵאֲנָ֣ה לִנְגּ֣וֹעַ נַפְשִׁ֑י הֵ֝֗מָּה כִּדְוֵ֥י לַחְמִֽי׃
οὐ δύναται γὰρ παύσασθαί μου ἡ ψυχή βρόμον γὰρ ὁρῶ τὰ σῖτά μου ὥσπερ ὀσμὴν λέοντος
Quae prius nolebat tangere anima mea, nunc, prae angustia, cibi mei sunt.
—
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
6:8
מִֽי־יִ֭תֵּן תָּב֣וֹא שֶׁאֱלָתִ֑י וְ֝תִקְוָתִ֗י יִתֵּ֥ן אֱלֽוֹהַּ׃
εἰ γὰρ δῴη καὶ ἔλθοι μου ἡ αἴτησις καὶ τὴν ἐλπίδα μου δῴη ὁ κύριος
Quis det ut veniat petitio mea, et quod expecto tribuat mihi Deus ?
ወአኀዘ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ወፈጸመ፡ ወቀተለኒ፡ ለዝሉፉ።
“Oh that I might have my request, that God would grant the thing that I long for,
6:9
וְיֹאֵ֣ל אֱ֭לוֹהַּ וִידַכְּאֵ֑נִי יַתֵּ֥ר יָ֝ד֗וֹ וִיבַצְּעֵֽנִי׃
ἀρξάμενος ὁ κύριος τρωσάτω με εἰς τέλος δὲ μή με ἀνελέτω
et qui coepit, ipse me conterat ; solvat manum suam, et succidat me ?
ሶበ፡ ተሐንዐ፡ ዝኅርየ፡ ወአትመያየጥ፡ ውስተ፡ አረፋቲሁ፡ ወኢይምሕክ፡ እስመ፡ ኢሐሰውኩ፡ ቃለ፡ አምላኪየ፡ ቅዱስ።
even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
6:10
וּ֥תְהִי־ע֨וֹד׀ נֶ֘חָ֤מָתִ֗י וַאֲסַלְּדָ֣ה בְ֭חִילָה לֹ֣א יַחְמ֑וֹל כִּי־לֹ֥א כִ֝חַ֗דְתִּי אִמְרֵ֥י קָדֽוֹשׁ׃
εἴη δέ μου πόλις τάφος ἐφ’ ἧς ἐπὶ τειχέων ἡλλόμην ἐπ’ αὐτῆς οὐ μὴ φείσωμαι οὐ γὰρ ἐψευσάμην ῥήματα ἅγια θεοῦ μου
Et haec mihi sit consolatio, ut affligens me dolore, non parcat, nec contradicam sermonibus Sancti.
ምንትኑ፡ ኃይልየ፡ ከመ፡ አትዓገሥ፡ ወምንትኑ፡ መዋዕ፡ ልየ፡ ከመ፡ ታስተአዝዝ፡ ነፍስየ።
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
6:11
מַה־כֹּחִ֥י כִֽי־אֲיַחֵ֑ל וּמַה־קִּ֝צִּ֗י כִּֽי־אַאֲרִ֥יךְ נַפְשִֽׁי׃
τίς γάρ μου ἡ ἰσχύς ὅτι ὑπομένω ἢ τίς μου ὁ χρόνος ὅτι ἀνέχεταί μου ἡ ψυχή
Quae est enim fortitudo mea, ut sustineam ? aut quis finis meus, ut patienter agam ?
ወቦኑ፡ ዘብርት፡ ሥጋየ፡ ወሚመ፡ ኃይለ፡ እብንኑ፡ ኃይልየ።
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
6:12
אִם־כֹּ֣חַ אֲבָנִ֣ים כֹּחִ֑י אִֽם־בְּשָׂרִ֥י נָחֽוּשׁ׃
μὴ ἰσχὺς λίθων ἡ ἰσχύς μου ἢ αἱ σάρκες μού εἰσιν χάλκειαι
Nec fortitudo lapidum fortitudo mea, nec caro mea aenea est.
አኮኑ፡ ቦቱ፡ ተወከልኩ፡ ወለምንት፡ ርኅቀ፡ እምኔየ፡ ረድኤቱ።
Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of bronze?
6:13
הַאִ֬ם אֵ֣ין עֶזְרָתִ֣י בִ֑י וְ֝תֻשִׁיָּ֗ה נִדְּחָ֥ה מִמֶּֽנִּי׃
ἦ οὐκ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ ἐπεποίθειν βοήθεια δὲ ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἄπεστιν
Ecce non est auxilium mihi in me, et necessarii quoque mei recesserunt a me.
ወተኀየየኒ፡ ሣህሉ፡ ወኢነጸረኒ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ወኢሐወጸኒ፡ በሣህሉ።
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
6:14
לַמָּ֣ס מֵרֵעֵ֣הוּ חָ֑סֶד וְיִרְאַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יַעֲזֽוֹב׃
ἀπείπατό με ἔλεος ἐπισκοπὴ δὲ κυρίου ὑπερεῖδέν με
Qui tollit ab amico suo misericordiam, timorem Domini derelinquit.
አዝማድየኒ፡ ኢያአመሩኒ፡ ከመ፡ ውኂዝ፡ ዘነጽፈ፡ ወከመ፡ ማዕበል፡ ዘኃለፈ፡ እልክቱ፡ እለ፡ ይፈርሁኒ፡ እሙንቱ፡ ይሰሕቁኒ።
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
6:15
אַ֭חַי בָּגְד֣וּ כְמוֹ־נָ֑חַל כַּאֲפִ֖יק נְחָלִ֣ים יַעֲבֹֽרוּ׃
οὐ προσεῖδόν με οἱ ἐγγύτατοί μου ὥσπερ χειμάρρους ἐκλείπων ἢ ὥσπερ κῦμα παρῆλθόν με
Fratres mei praeterierunt me, sicut torrens qui raptim transit in convallibus.
ከመ፡ በረድ፡ ወከመ፡ አስሐትያ፡ ዘጠግአ፡ ወእምዝ፡ ተመስወ፡ መዊቆ፡ ወኢተዓውቀ፡ ኀበ፡ ነበረ።
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
6:16
הַקֹּדְרִ֥ים מִנִּי־קָ֑רַח עָ֝לֵ֗ימוֹ יִתְעַלֶּם־שָֽׁלֶג׃
οἵτινές με διευλαβοῦντο νῦν ἐπιπεπτώκασίν μοι ὥσπερ χιὼν ἢ κρύσταλλος πεπηγώς
Qui timent pruinam, irruet super eos nix.
ከማሁ፡ አነሂ፡ ወፃእኩ፡ እምኵሉ፡ ወተኃጐልኩ፡ ወወፃእኩ፡ እምቤትየ።
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
6:17
בְּעֵ֣ת יְזֹרְב֣וּ נִצְמָ֑תוּ בְּ֝חֻמּ֗וֹ נִדְעֲכ֥וּ מִמְּקוֹמָֽם׃
καθὼς τακεῖσα θέρμης γενομένης οὐκ ἐπεγνώσθη ὅπερ ἦν
Tempore quo fuerint dissipati, peribunt ; et ut incaluerit, solventur de loco suo.
ተአምሩ፡ ግዕዞሙ፡ ለቴሜኖን፡ ወእከዮሙ፡ ለሳባን፡ ወተዓውሮቶሙ።
In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
6:18
יִ֭לָּ֣פְתוּ אׇרְח֣וֹת דַּרְכָּ֑ם יַעֲל֖וּ בַתֹּ֣הוּ וְיֹאבֵֽדוּ׃
οὕτως κἀγὼ κατελείφθην ὑπὸ πάντων ἀπωλόμην δὲ καὶ ἔξοικος ἐγενόμην
Involutae sunt semitae gressuum eorum ; ambulabunt in vacuum, et peribunt.
ወርቱዕሰ፡ ይትኀፈሩ፡ እለ፡ ይትዌከሉ፡ በንዋዮሙ፡ ወበአብያቲሆሙ።
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
6:19
הִ֭בִּיטוּ אׇרְח֣וֹת תֵּמָ֑א הֲלִיכֹ֥ת שְׁ֝בָ֗א קִוּוּ־לָֽמוֹ׃
ἴδετε ὁδοὺς Θαιμανων ἀτραποὺς Σαβων οἱ διορῶντες
Considerate semitas Thema, itinera Saba, et expectate paulisper.
ከመ፡ አንትሙ፡ መጻአክሙ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ምሕረት፡ ወርእ፡ የክሙ፡ ቊስልየ፡ ኢፈራህክሙ፡ በእንተ፡ ምንት።
The caravans of Tema looked. The companies of Sheba waited for them.
6:20
בֹּ֥שׁוּ כִֽי־בָטָ֑ח בָּ֥אוּ עָ֝דֶ֗יהָ וַיֶּחְפָּֽרוּ׃
καὶ αἰσχύνην ὀφειλήσουσιν οἱ ἐπὶ πόλεσιν καὶ χρήμασιν πεποιθότες
Confusi sunt, quia speravi : venerunt quoque usque ad me, et pudore cooperti sunt.
ቦኑ፡ ዘሰአልኩክሙ፡ ወሚመ፡ ኃይለ፡ ዚአክሙ፡ ተመነይኩ፡ ከመ፡ ታድኅኑኒ፡ እምፀርየ፡ ወታንግፉኒ፡ እምእደ፡ ዘይትኄየለኒ።
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
6:21
כִּֽי־עַ֭תָּה הֱיִ֣יתֶם לֹ֑א תִּֽרְא֥וּ חֲ֝תַ֗ת וַתִּירָֽאוּ׃
ἀτὰρ δὲ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπέβητέ μοι ἀνελεημόνως ὥστε ἰδόντες τὸ ἐμὸν τραῦμα φοβήθητε
Nunc venistis ; et modo videntes plagam meam, timetis.
መሀሩኒ፡ መሀሩኒ፡ ወአነ፡ አጸአክሙ፡ ወእመቦሰ፡ ዘስሕትኩ፡ አጠይቁኒ፡ እስመ፡ ሐሰተ፡ ይመስል፡ ነገርየ፡ ዘእሙን።
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
6:22
הֲֽכִי־אָ֭מַרְתִּי הָ֣בוּ לִ֑י וּ֝מִכֹּחֲכֶ֗ם שִׁחֲד֥וּ בַעֲדִֽי׃
τί γάρ μή τι ὑμᾶς ᾔτησα ἢ τῆς παρ’ ὑμῶν ἰσχύος ἐπιδέομαι
Numquid dixi : Afferte mihi, et de substantia vestra donate mihi ?
ወአኮ፡ በኀቤክሙ፡ ዘእስእል፡ ኃይለ፡ ወኑዛዜ፡ ነገርክሙኒ፡ ኢያስተሕተኒ፡ ወኢይሔውዘኒ፡ ሣዕሣዐ፡ ቃልቅከሙ፡ እስመ፡ ስሕቅሙ፡ ላዕለ፡ ዐርክክሙ፡ ወተሣለቅክሙ፡ ላዕለ፡ እጓለ፡ ማውታ።
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
6:23
וּמַלְּט֥וּנִי מִיַּד־צָ֑ר וּמִיַּ֖ד עָרִיצִ֣ים תִּפְדּֽוּנִי׃
ὥστε σῶσαί με ἐξ ἐχθρῶν ἢ ἐκ χειρὸς δυναστῶν ῥύσασθαί με
vel : Liberate me de manu hostis, et de manu robustorum eruite me ?
ይእዜኒ፡ ነጺርየ፡ ገጸክኑ፡ እንዘ፡ ኢይሔስወክሙ፡ ንበሩ፡ ዳአሙ፡ ኢተዐምፁ፡ ወበጽድቅ፡ ካፅበ፡ ተናገሩ።
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
6:24
ה֭וֹרוּנִי וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲרִ֑ישׁ וּמַה־שָּׁ֝גִ֗יתִי הָבִ֥ינוּ לִֽי׃
διδάξατέ με ἐγὼ δὲ κωφεύσω εἴ τι πεπλάνημαι φράσατέ μοι
Docete me, et ego tacebo : et si quid forte ignoravi, instruite me.
እስመ፡ አልቦ፡ ቃለ፡ ዓመፃ፡ ውስተ፡ ልሳንየ፡ ወጥበበ፡ ይነብብ፡ ጕርዔየ።
“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error.
6:25
מַה־נִּמְרְצ֥וּ אִמְרֵי־יֹ֑שֶׁר וּמַה־יּוֹכִ֖יחַ הוֹכֵ֣חַ מִכֶּֽם׃
ἀλλ’ ὡς ἔοικεν φαῦλα ἀληθινοῦ ῥήματα οὐ γὰρ παρ’ ὑμῶν ἰσχὺν αἰτοῦμαι
Quare detraxistis sermonibus veritatis, cum e vobis nullus sit qui possit arguere me ?
—
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
6:26
הַלְהוֹכַ֣ח מִלִּ֣ים תַּחְשֹׁ֑בוּ וּ֝לְר֗וּחַ אִמְרֵ֥י נֹאָֽשׁ׃
οὐδὲ ὁ ἔλεγχος ὑμῶν ῥήμασίν με παύσει οὐδὲ γὰρ ὑμῶν φθέγμα ῥήματος ἀνέξομαι
Ad increpandum tantum eloquia concinnatis, et in ventum verba profertis.
—
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
6:27
אַף־עַל־יָת֥וֹם תַּפִּ֑ילוּ וְ֝תִכְר֗וּ עַֽל־רֵיעֲכֶֽם׃
πλὴν ὅτι ἐπ’ ὀρφανῷ ἐπιπίπτετε ἐνάλλεσθε δὲ ἐπὶ φίλῳ ὑμῶν
Super pupillum irruitis, et subvertere nitimini amicum vestrum.
—
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
6:28
וְ֭עַתָּה הוֹאִ֣ילוּ פְנוּ־בִ֑י וְעַל־פְּ֝נֵיכֶ֗ם אִם־אֲכַזֵּֽב׃
νυνὶ δὲ εἰσβλέψας εἰς πρόσωπα ὑμῶν οὐ ψεύσομαι
Verumtamen quod coepistis explete : praebete aurem, et videte an mentiar.
—
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
6:29
שֽׁוּבוּ־נָ֭א אַל־תְּהִ֣י עַוְלָ֑ה (ושבי) [וְשׁ֥וּבוּ] ע֝֗וֹד צִדְקִי־בָֽהּ׃
καθίσατε δὴ καὶ μὴ εἴη ἄδικον καὶ πάλιν τῷ δικαίῳ συνέρχεσθε
Respondete, obsecro, absque contentione ; et loquentes id quod justum est, judicate.
—
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
6:30
הֲיֵשׁ־בִּלְשׁוֹנִ֥י עַוְלָ֑ה אִם־חִ֝כִּ֗י לֹא־יָבִ֥ין הַוּֽוֹת׃
οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἐν γλώσσῃ μου ἄδικον ἢ ὁ λάρυγξ μου οὐχὶ σύνεσιν μελετᾷ
Et non invenietis in lingua mea iniquitatem, nec in faucibus meis stultitia personabit.
—
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
