8:1
And such was the conflict of those Egyptians who at Tyre displayed their struggles for the sake of godliness. But one might also marvel at those of them who bore witness in their own land, where countless numbers of men, together with women and children, despising the present life for the sake of the teaching of our Saviour, endured diverse deaths: some of them, after tearings and rackings and most grievous scourgings and countless other varied and dreadful tortures, were delivered to the fire; others were drowned in the sea; others courageously stretched out their own heads to those who beheaded them; others died under the tortures; others perished by famine; and others again were impaled, some in the manner customary for criminals, and others, worse still, were nailed up head-downward and kept alive, until they should perish of hunger upon the very gibbets.
