7:1
On the course of the psalms. But concerning the synaxis, that is, concerning the course of psalms and prayers in the canonical manner, certain things must be distinguished, since it has been handed down to memory variously by various persons. Therefore, according to the quality of life and the succession of seasons, let this same thing be set forth in writing by me too, in varied fashion. For it ought not to be uniform, on account of the reciprocal alternation of the seasons: for it is fitting that it be longer through the long nights, and shorter through the short ones.
7:2
Inde et apud seniores nostros ab octavo Kalendas Julii, cum noctis augmento sensim incipit crescere cursus, a duodecim choris brevissimi modi, in nocte sabbati sive Domi- nicae, usque ad initium hiemis, id est Kalendas No- vembris, in quibus viginti quinque canunt antipho- nas psalmorum ejusdem numeri; qui semper tres loco duobus succedunt psaltis: ita ut totius psalterii inter duas supra dictas noctes numerum cantent duodecim choris, caeteras temperantes tota hieme noctes; qua finita per ver sensim per singulas heb- domadas terni semper decedant psalmi, ut duodecim in singulis noctibus tantum antiphonae remaneant, id est, quotidiani hiemalis tringinta sex psalmi cursus;
Hence among our elders also, from the eighth day before the Kalends of July, when with the lengthening of the night the course gradually begins to increase, from twelve choirs of the briefest measure on the night of the Sabbath or of the Lord's Day, until the beginning of winter, that is, the Kalends of November, in which they sing twenty-five antiphons of psalms of the same number; which always come three in the place of two psalms: so that between the two aforesaid nights they may chant the number of the whole psalter in twelve choirs, regulating the other nights throughout the whole winter; and when winter is over, through spring, gradually, through each week, three psalms always drop off, so that there remain only twelve antiphons in each night, that is, the daily winter course of thirty-six psalms;
因此,在我們的長者中間,從七月初一前第八日起,當隨著夜晚漸長、次序也漸漸開始增多;在安息日或主日之夜,從最短格式的十二組詩歌開始,直到冬季之初,即十一月初一,在這期間他們唱二十五首同數的詩篇對唱詠;這些對唱詠總是三首頂替兩篇詩篇之位:如此,在上述兩個夜晚之間,他們以十二組詩歌唱完全部詩篇集的篇數,並調節整個冬季其餘的夜晚;冬季既過,到了春天,每週逐漸減去三篇詩篇,以致每夜只剩下十二首對唱詠,即每日冬季三十六篇詩篇的次序;
7:3
viginti quatuor autem per totum ver et aestatem, et usque ad autumnale aequinoctium, id est octavo Kalendas Octobris, in quo similitudo synaxeos est, sicut in vernali aequinoctio, id est octavo Kalendas Aprilis, dura per reciprocas vices paulatim et crescit, et decrescit. Igitur juxta vires consideranda vigilia est, maxime cum ab auctore salutis nostrae jubemur vigilare, et orare omni tempore ( Luc. XXI, 36); et Paulus ( I Thess. V. 17) praecipit sine intermissione orare. Sed quia orationum canonicarum noscendus est modus, in quo omnes simul orantes horis conve- niant statutis, quibusque absolutis unusquisque in cubiculo suo orare debet;
but twenty-four throughout the whole spring and summer, and up to the autumnal equinox, that is, the eighth day before the Kalends of October, on which there is a likeness of the synaxis, as at the vernal equinox, that is, the eighth day before the Kalends of April; in which, through reciprocal turns, it gradually both increases and decreases. Therefore the vigil is to be considered according to one's strength, especially since we are commanded by the Author of our salvation to watch and pray at all times (Luke 21:36); and Paul (1 Thess. 5:17) enjoins us to pray without ceasing. But since the measure of canonical prayers is to be known, in which all praying together meet at the appointed hours, after which each must pray in his own chamber;
但整個春夏、直到秋分,即十月初一前第八日,則唱二十四首;在秋分時,聖會集禱有相仿的格式,正如在春分時,即四月初一前第八日;在這期間,藉著彼此交替的更迭而漸漸增多又漸漸減少。因此,守夜當照各人的力量斟酌,尤其因為我們的救恩之主吩咐我們要時常警醒禱告(路二一36);保羅(帖前五17)也囑咐我們要不住地禱告。然而,既然當知曉教會法規禱告的規範——眾人在所定的時辰同心一齊禱告,禱告完畢後各人當在自己的內室禱告;
7:4
per diurnas terni psalmi horas, pro operum interpositione, statuti sunt a se- nioribus nostris, cum versiculorum augmento inter- venientium, pro peccatis primum nostris, deinde pro omni populo Christiano; deinde pro sacerdotibus et reliquis Deo consecratis sacrae plebis gradibus, po- stremo pro eleemosynas facientibus; postea pro pace regum, novissime pro inimicis; ne illis Deus statuat in peccatum, quod persequuntur et detra- hunt nobis, quia nesciunt quid faciunt ( Act. VII, 59). Ad initium vero noctis duodecim psalmi, ad me- diumque noctis duodecim similiter psalluntur; ad matutinum vero bis deni, bisque bini per tempora brevium, ut dictum est, noctium, sunt dispositi;
throughout the daytime hours three psalms each have been appointed by our elders, on account of the interruption of work, with an addition of intervening versicles, first for our own sins, then for all the Christian people; then for the priests and the remaining grades of the holy people consecrated to God; lastly for those who give alms; afterwards for the peace of kings; and last of all for our enemies, that God may not lay it to them as a sin that they persecute and slander us, since they know not what they do (Acts 7:60). But at the beginning of the night twelve psalms, and at midnight likewise twelve, are sung; but at matins twice ten and twice two are appointed during the seasons of the short nights, as has been said;
在白晝的各時辰,因工作的間隔,我們的長者定下每次三篇詩篇,並加上其間插入的短句,首先為我們自己的罪,其次為所有基督徒的子民;再次為祭司、並其餘獻給上帝的聖民各等職分;最後為施捨之人;其後為君王的平安;最末為我們的仇敵,求上帝不將他們逼迫、毀謗我們的事算為他們的罪,因為他們所作的,他們不曉得(徒七60)。但在夜晚之初唱十二篇詩篇,在午夜同樣唱十二篇;至於晨禱,如前所說,在短夜的季節定為兩個十篇加兩個兩篇;
7:5
pluribus, jam ut dixi, semper nocti dominicae ac sabbati vigiliae deputatis, in quibus sub uno cursu septuaginta quinque singillatim cantantur. Haec juxta communem dicta sunt synaxim. Sed vera, ut dixi, orandi traditio, ut possibilitas ad hoc destinati sine fastidio voti praevaleat, sue sua perfectio possibilita- tis permittat, vel capacitas mentis illius cum necessi- tatum consideratione, vel vitae qualitas possit ad- mittere; et quantum uniuscujusque fervor exegeri., si liber ac solus sit, aut eruditionis ejus quantitas postulaverit, aut status otium, aut magnitudo studii, aut operum qualitas, aut aetatum diversitas permise- rit;
more being always assigned, as I have said, to the vigil of the Lord's night and of the Sabbath, in which under one course seventy-five are sung one by one. These things have been said according to the common synaxis. But the true tradition of praying, as I have said, is that the possibility of one destined to this may prevail without weariness of vow, or that his own perfection of capacity may permit, or the capacity of his mind, together with consideration of necessities, or the quality of life may allow; and as much as the fervor of each one demands, if he be free and alone, or the measure of his learning requires, or his leisure of state, or greatness of zeal, or the quality of works, or diversity of ages permits;
如我所說,總是把較多的篇數分派給主日之夜與安息日的守夜,在這守夜中,於一個次序下逐一唱七十五篇。這些話是照著一般的聖會集禱所說的。但真實的禱告傳統,如我所說,乃是要看:被指定為此的人有何可能性,能不致厭倦其所許的願而勝任;或他自身能力的全備容許多少;或他心思的容量,連同對各樣需用的斟酌;或他生活的性質所能容許的;以及各人的熱忱要求多少,倘若他是自由且獨處的;或他學識的多寡所需求的;或他閒暇的境況、熱忱的大小、工作的性質、或年歲的差異所容許的;
7:6
so the perfection of one thing may be variously estimated, since it is apportioned with the labor of adoration: and therefore, although the length of standing or chanting be varied, yet there shall be an equality of one perfection of praying in the heart, and a continual intention of the mind's care toward God. But there are certain catholics to whom the same canonical twelvefold number of psalms is the rule, whether through short or through long nights; but they render this canon by four turns in the night, at the beginning of the night, and at its middle, also at cockcrow, and at matins. This course, as in winter it seems small to some, so in summer it is found burdensome enough and more grievous, since by frequent expeditions in the brevity of the night it causes not so much weariness as exhaustion.
But on the most reverend nights, namely of the Lord's Day or of the Sabbath, at matins the same number is rolled out threefold, that is, with thrice ten and six psalms. The multitude of these has indicated this canonical number, with sweet pleasantness, to many for a holy manner of life, like the rest of the discipline, under whose rule indeed no one is found wearied: and though their multitude is so great that a thousand abbots are reported to be under one archimandrite, no quarrel from the condition of the monastery between two monks is said to have ever been seen there: which it is manifest cannot be without the indwelling of God there, who says: 'I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people' (2 Cor. 6:16; Lev. 26:12).
7:8
Merito itaque creverunt, et quotidie. Deo gratias, crescunt, in quorum medio Deus habitat; quorum meritis mereamur salvari a Salvatore nostro. Amen.
Deservedly, therefore, they have increased, and daily—thanks be to God—they increase, in whose midst God dwells; by whose merits may we deserve to be saved by our Savior. Amen.
