Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and bowing himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and young people gathered to him out of Israel; and the people wept very bitterly.
And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, We have sinned against our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this.
Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and the children born of them, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise and rebuke them as you see fit, by the commandment of our God; and let them act according to our law.
Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he had gone there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, saying that, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, whoever did not come within three days should forfeit all his property, and should himself be separated from the assembly of the exiles.
Now therefore make confession to Jehovah the God of our fathers, and do His good pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women.
10:12
ወአውሥኡ፡ ኵሉ፡ ሕዝብ፡ ወይቤሉ፡ ዓቢይ፡ ዝ፡ ነገር፡ ለነ፡ ዘንገብር።
全會眾回答說:「你所說的是;我們必照著行。
And all the assembly answered and said, It is a great matter for us to do; as you have said, so must we do.
But the people are many, and it is the rainy season, and we are not able to stand outside; nor is this the work of one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
Let now our leaders represent the whole assembly; and let all those in our cities who have married foreign women come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter be turned away from us.
And the children of the captivity did so. Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of the fathers' houses, each by his fathers' house, all of them designated by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
Among the sons of the priests who were found to have married foreign women, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers, were Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.
