Αὐτίκα γοῦν τῶν οὐκ ἀσήμων τις, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἄγαν κατὰ τὰς ἐν τῷ βίῳ νενομισμένας ὑπεροχὰς ἐνδοξοτάτων, ἅμα τῷ τὴν κατὰ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν ἐν τῇ Νικομηδείᾳ προτεθῆναι γραφὴν, ζήλῳ τῷ κατὰ θεὸν ὑποκινηθεὶς, διαπύρῳ τε ἐφορμήσας τῇ πίστει, ἐν προφανεῖ καὶ δημοσίῳ κειμένην ὡς ἀνοσίαν καὶ ἀσεβεστάτην ἀνελὼν σπαράττει, δυοῖν ἐπιπαρόντων κατὰ τὴν αὐτὴν πόλιν βασιλέων, τοῦ τε πρεσβυτάτου τῶν ἄλλων καὶ τοῦ τὸν τέταρτον ἀπὸ τούτου τῆς ἀρχῆς ἐπικρατοῦντος βαθμόν. ἀλλ οὗτος μὲν τῶν τηνικάδε πρῶτος τοῦτον διαπρέψας τὸν τρόπον, ἄμα τε τοιαῦτα, οἷα καὶ εἰκὸς ἦν, ὑπομείνας ὡσὰν ἐπὶ τοιούτῳ τολμήματι, τὸ ἄλυπον καὶ ἀτάραχον εἰς αὐτὴν τελευταίαν διετήρησεν ἀναπνοήν.
且說，立時就有一個人，絕非無名之輩，乃是按今生所重的尊貴極為顯赫的人；當攻擊眾教會的詔書在尼哥米底亞張貼之際，他被向神的熱心所激動，又被火熱的信心所催逼，便將那放在公開眾目之處的詔書當作不潔至褻的東西扯下撕碎；當時竟有兩位皇帝同在那城──一位是眾人中最年長的，一位是在他之下握有第四等權位的。這人是那時頭一個如此卓然顯出自己的，他同時為這樣大膽的行為忍受了一切意料中的事，卻將那無憂無慮、安然不亂的心境保守到最末了的一口氣。
Straightway, at any rate, a certain man, by no means obscure, but exceedingly illustrious according to the distinctions esteemed in this life, the moment the decree against the churches was posted up in Nicomedia, moved by zeal toward God and impelled by a fervent faith, seized and tore it to pieces as an unholy and most impious thing, while it lay in an open and public place—and that while two emperors were present in the same city, the most senior of all, and he who held the fourth grade of authority after him. But this man, the first of those at that time to distinguish himself in this manner, while at the same time enduring such things as were to be expected for so daring a deed, preserved a demeanour free from grief and untroubled unto his very last breath.
