'For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.'
2:2
'And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all discernment;'
2:3
'that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense unto the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.'
2:4
It is not as one who is disbelieved that he calls God to witness, but he does this out of great affection, and because he is exceedingly persuaded and full of confidence.
2:5
For since he had said that they had shared with him, lest they should suppose that it was for this reason that he longed after them, and not simply for their own sake, he therefore added, 'In the bowels of Christ.'
2:6
What is this? It is equivalent to saying, 'According to Christ.'
2:7
Since you are believers, since you love Christ, for the sake of the love that is according to Christ.
2:8
And he did not say 'love,' but that which was more ardent: 'the bowels of Christ.'
2:9
As though saying this: from him who has become as your father through the kinship that is according to Christ.
2:10
he freely bestows warm and burning bowels of affection.
2:11
For to his genuine servants he bestows his bowels of affection.
2:12
他說:「在那心腸之中」;
'In those bowels,' he says;
2:13
I love you with bowels of affection that are not natural, but with those more ardent ones, the bowels of Christ.
2:14
'How I long,' he says, 'for you all.'
2:15
I long for you all, since you are all of such a kind.
2:16
所以我無法說出我是何等切切地想念你們;
It is therefore impossible to tell how I long for you;
2:17
因為我無法用言語表達這份渴望;
for I am not able to set forth in words this yearning;
2:18
for this reason I leave it to God to know it, to him who searches the hearts.
2:19
然而,倘若他是在諂媚他們,他斷不會呼求神作見證;
But he would not, if he were flattering them, have called God to witness;
2:20
'And this I pray,' he says, 'that your love may abound yet more and more.'
2:21
for this good thing is insatiable.
2:22
See how, though he was loved, he desired still more to be loved.
2:23
因為這樣去愛的人,願那被愛者在愛上永不止步;
For he who loves in this way desires that the one loved should nowhere come to a stop in his love;
2:24
for there is no measure to this good thing.
2:25
Wherefore Paul wishes that it should ever be owed, saying, 'Owe no man anything, save to love one another.'
2:26
The measure of love is to come to a stop nowhere.
2:27
'That your love,' he says, 'may abound yet more and more.'
2:28
See the disposition of the expression.
2:29
'Yet more and more,' he says, 'that it may abound in knowledge and in all discernment.'
2:30
他所稱許的,不是單單的情誼,也不是單單的愛,而是那出於知識的愛;
He does not simply marvel at friendship, nor simply at love, but at that which springs from knowledge;
2:31
也就是說,並非要你們對所有人都施以同樣的愛;
that is to say, not that you should exercise the same love toward all;
2:32
for that would be a mark not of love, but of coldness.
2:33
What does 'in knowledge' mean? That is, with judgment, with reasoning, with perception.
2:34
因為有些人愛得毫無理性,隨隨便便、漫無分別;
For there are some who love without reason, indiscriminately and at random;
2:35
wherefore it comes about that such friendships are not even fervent. 'In knowledge,' he says, 'and in all discernment, that you may approve the things that differ,' that is, the things that are profitable.
2:36
'I do not say these things for my own sake,' he says, 'but for your own sakes;'
2:37
for there is a danger lest anyone be corrupted by the love of the heretics.
2:38
For this is the whole thing he hints at by speaking in this way.
2:39
And see how he puts it:
2:40
'It is not for my own sake,' he says, 'that I say these things, but that you may be sincere;'
2:41
that is, that you may not accept any spurious doctrine under the pretext of love.
2:42
那麼,他在別處為何說:「若是能行,就要盡力與眾人和睦」呢?他說「要和睦」,並不是指你們該愛到甚至因情誼而受損;
How then does he say elsewhere, 'If it be possible, be at peace with all men'? He said 'be at peace,' not indicating this, that you should not love in such a way as to be harmed by the friendship;
2:43
'For if your right eye offends you,' he says, 'pluck it out, and cast it from you;'
2:44
but rather, 'that you may be sincere,' that is, in what pertains to God, 'and without offense,' that is, in what pertains to men.
2:45
For friendships often harm many.
2:46
'For even if it does you no harm,' he says, 'yet another stumbles.'
2:47
也就是說,好叫你們那時被察驗為潔淨的,沒有絆倒任何人;
that is, that you may then be found pure, having caused no one to stumble;
2:48
'Being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God;'
2:49
that is, having together with sound doctrines an upright life as well.
2:50
For it is not enough simply to be upright, but one must be filled with the fruits of righteousness.
2:51
因為也有一種義,但不是按照基督的義,例如僅僅有德行的生活;
For there is a righteousness, but not one according to Christ, such as a life that is simply virtuous;
2:52
but rather, 'those which are by Jesus Christ,' he says, 'unto the glory and praise of God.'
2:53
Do you see that I do not speak of my own glory, but of the righteousness of God? And in many places he calls almsgiving too 'righteousness.'
2:54
他說:「不要讓愛心妨礙你們去認識那有益的事,也不要因為你愛某人就跌倒了。」我固然願你們的愛心增長,卻不願它增長到反受其害的地步;
'Let not love hinder you,' he says, 'from knowing the things that are profitable, and, because you love a certain person, do not fall.' I do indeed wish your love to increase, yet not in such a way as to be harmed by it;
2:55
and I do not simply wish it to be by a prejudgment, but that you should first test whether we speak rightly.
2:56
And he did not say, 'that you may choose our position,' but, 'that you may test it.'
2:57
And he did not say openly, 'Do not associate with such a one;'
2:58
but rather, 'I wish your love to be exercised toward what is profitable, not that you should be devoid of discernment.'
2:59
For it is senseless, if you do not work righteousness for Christ's sake and through him.
2:60
Behold the 'through him' once again.
2:61
Does he then use God as a subordinate helper? Away with the thought!
2:62
'I did not speak thus,' he says, 'that I might be praised, but that God might be glorified.'
2:63
'But I would have you know, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the Gospel;'
2:64
'so that my bonds have become manifest in Christ throughout the whole praetorium, and to all the rest.'
2:65
It was likely that those who heard he was bound would grieve, and think that the preaching was being hindered.
2:66
What then does he do? He at once removes this suspicion, and says:
2:67
'The things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the Gospel.'
2:68
And this too belongs to one who loves, to make known to them his own affairs, seeing that they are anxious.
2:69
What do you say? You are bound, you have been hindered, and how does the Gospel make progress? 'So that my bonds,' he says, 'which are in Christ, have become manifest throughout the whole praetorium.'
2:70
This not only did not silence the others, nor make them timid, but this very thing rather emboldened them.
2:71
If then those who were near the very dangers were not only in no way harmed, but even took greater courage, much more ought you to be of good cheer.
2:72
因為他若被捆鎖後便悲慘地承受、默不作聲,那麼那些人很可能也會如此;
For if, having been bound, he had borne it wretchedly and had kept silence, it was likely that those others too would have done the same;
2:73
but if, having been bound, he spoke with even greater boldness, he gave them more courage than if he had not been bound.
2:74
But how did the bonds become a furtherance of the Gospel? 'God so ordered it,' he says, 'that my bonds — those in Christ, those for Christ's sake — should not remain hidden, throughout the whole praetorium.'
2:75
For at that time they used so to call the imperial palace.
2:76
'Not in the praetorium alone,' he says, 'but also in the whole city.'
2:77
'And most of the brethren, being confident in the Lord through my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.'
2:78
This shows that even before they were of good courage, and spoke with boldness; but now much more.
2:79
他說:「若別人因我的捆鎖尚且壯膽,我自己豈不更當如此;
'If then others,' he says, 'are of good courage because of my bonds, how much more I myself;'
2:80
'if to others I am a cause of courage, how much more to myself.'
2:81
'And most of the brethren in the Lord.'
2:82
由於說「我的捆鎖使他們壯膽」乃是一件大事,因此他預先如此說,以作防範;
Since it was a great thing to say that his bonds gave them courage, for this reason he first said, taking precaution;
2:83
Do you see how, even when he is under necessity of speaking loftily, he does not depart from being moderate? 'To be much more bold,' he says, 'to speak the word without fear.'
2:84
The word 'much more' indicates that they had already begun.
2:85
'Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife, but some also of good will.'
2:86
What then this means is worth learning.
2:87
由於保羅被囚禁,許多不信的人,想要激起皇帝對他的猛烈攻擊,便自己也去傳講基督;
Since Paul had been imprisoned, many of the unbelievers, wishing to stir up against him the fierce war that came from the emperor, themselves also began to preach Christ;
2:88
so that the emperor's wrath might become greater, inasmuch as the preaching was being spread abroad, and that the whole force of his fury might come down upon Paul's head.
2:89
For two reasons, then, his bonds became a cause.
2:90
For to some they gave much courage, while others, being led into hope of my destruction, they prepared to preach Christ.
2:91
就是說,他們嫉妒我的榮耀與我的堅定,並想要我滅亡,又與我相爭,卻仍與我同工;
That is, envying my glory and my steadfastness, and wishing me to perish, and contending against me, they nevertheless work together with me;
2:92
or in order that they themselves might also be honoured, and thinking to draw off for themselves some part of my glory.
2:93
'But some also of good will;'
2:94
that is, without pretence, out of all eagerness.
2:95
'Some indeed proclaim Christ out of contention, not sincerely;'
2:96
that is, not purely, nor for the sake of the thing itself, but for what reason? 'Thinking to bring affliction upon my bonds.'
2:97
For supposing that thus I should fall into greater danger, they bring affliction upon affliction.
2:98
O the diabolical activity!
2:99
他們看見他被捆鎖、被投入監獄,竟然還嫉妒他;
They saw him bound and cast into prison, and yet they still envied;
2:100
they wished to increase his calamities for him, and to make him liable to greater wrath.
2:101
他說得好,用了「以為」二字;
And he said well, 'Thinking;'
2:102
For they indeed supposed that they were grieving me by this, but I rejoiced because the preaching was advancing.
2:103
如此,人行善事竟可以不是出於善良的心志;
Thus it is possible to do a good work not from a good purpose;
2:104
and not only is there no reward laid up for this, but even punishment.
2:105
For since, wishing to surround the herald of Christ with greater dangers, they preached Christ, not only will they not
2:106
receive a reward, but will even be liable to vengeance and punishment.
2:107
'But the others of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the Gospel.'
2:108
What is 'that I am set for the defence of the Gospel'? That is, cutting short for me the account I must give to God, and taking part with me somewhat in the defence.
2:109
我將要交帳,並要為我所受託付的工作辯明;
I am about to give account, and to make my defence for the work to which I have been appointed;
2:110
so that my defence might be easy for me, they take part with me.
2:111
For if many of those who have been instructed be found to have believed, my defence will be easy for me.
2:112
'What then? Notwithstanding, in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed.'
2:113
看這人愛智的胸襟;
See the philosophic temper of the man;
2:114
he did not vehemently accuse them, but stated what was happening.
2:115
'For what,' he says, 'does it matter to me, whether in this way or in that? Notwithstanding, in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed.'
2:116
He did not say 'Let it be proclaimed,' as though laying down a law; but first he announced what was happening, and secondly, even if he had spoken as laying down a law, not even so would he have introduced heresies.
2:117
For let us examine, if it seems good, the matter, and we shall find that, even if he had permitted preaching in this manner, as those men did, not even so would heresy have been introduced.
2:118
How? Because those men preached soundly, but the aim and the intention with which they did so was corrupted; the preaching itself was not altered.
2:119
And they had great necessity to preach thus.
2:120
為甚麼呢?因為他們若照別的樣式傳,不像保羅那樣,若照別的樣式教訓,不像他那樣,就不能加增皇帝的怒氣;
Why? Because if they had preached otherwise, not as Paul did, if they had taught otherwise, not as he did, they would not have increased the emperor's wrath;
2:121
but now, by increasing his preaching and teaching in like manner, and making disciples equal to his, they were able to inflame the emperor against him, inasmuch as a great multitude of disciples was appearing.
2:122
But some abominable and senseless man, laying hold of this passage, says:
2:123
'Nay, they would have wrought the contrary; they would have driven away those who had already believed, they would not have caused the faithful to increase, if indeed they wished to bite him.'
2:124
那麼我們要怎麼說呢?那些人所看重的只有一件事:就是使他陷於眼前的危險,不容他逃脫;
What then shall we say? That those men looked to this one thing: to surround him with present dangers, not to let him escape;
2:125
and by this they thought rather to grieve him and to quench the preaching, than in that other way.
2:126
因為若照那別的方法,他們或許既平息了皇帝的怒氣,又放他出去,再度傳講;
For in the other way they might have both quenched the emperor's wrath, and let him go forth, and preach again;
2:127
but in this way they thought to seize the whole through him, by doing away with him.
2:128
And this was not for the many to perceive, but only for certain bitter and exceedingly wicked men.
2:129
Then, 'And in this,' he says, 'I rejoice, yea, and I will rejoice.'
2:130
What is 'yea, and I will rejoice'? 'Even if it should increase yet more,' he says.
2:131
'For they work together with me even against their will, and of the labours toiled by them, they indeed shall receive punishment, while I, who contribute nothing, shall receive a reward.'
2:132
Is there then anything more abominable than the devil, who has devised a preaching that brings punishment upon those who obey it? Do you see with how many evils he pierces his own people? He devises for them punishment and vengeance out of this preaching and out of these labours.
2:133
And what other enemy and foe of their salvation could have disposed the whole matter thus? Do you see that he who wars against the truth has no power at all, but rather wounds himself, like one who kicks against the goads? 'For I know,' he says, 'that this shall turn out to me for salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.'
2:134
沒有甚麼比魔鬼更可憎的了;
Nothing is more abominable than the devil;
2:135
他就這樣到處用無益的勞苦圍困自己的人,並將他們撕裂;
thus everywhere he surrounds his own people with unprofitable labours, and tears them asunder;
2:136
and not only does he not allow them to obtain the prizes, but he knows how to make them liable to punishment as well.
2:137
因為他不僅立定宣講,還為他們立定這樣的禁食與童貞,這不但要使他們喪失賞賜,反倒要給那奉行之人招致大禍;
For not only preaching, but he also legislates for them such fasting and virginity as will not only deprive them of rewards, but will even bring great evil upon those who pursue it;
2:138
concerning whom he says also in another place:
2:139
'Having their own conscience seared.'
2:140
Wherefore I exhort you, let us give thanks to God for all things, that He has both lightened for us the
2:141
labours, and increased the rewards.
2:142
For the rewards which those who marry chastely among us enjoy, those who practise virginity among them do not enjoy; but rather those who practise virginity among the heretics have become liable to the penalty of fornicators.
2:143
Whence? From doing something not with a right aim, but for the slandering of God's creatures and of His unspeakable wisdom.
2:144
God gave us contests of due measure, having no toil.
2:145
But let us not on this account be contemptuous.
2:146
For if the heretics strain themselves with unprofitable labours, what defence shall we have, if we are unwilling to bear even the lighter ones, which have a greater reward? For what is burdensome, what is grievous, among the commandments of Christ? Are you unable to practise virginity? It is permitted you to marry.
2:147
Are you unable to strip yourself of all that you have? It is still in your power to give a share out of what you possess.
2:148
'Your abundance,' he says, 'for their lack.'
2:149
因為這些事看似沉重,我是指藐視錢財,並且勝過肉體的情慾;
For these things seem burdensome — I mean, to despise riches and to gain the mastery over bodily desire;
2:150
but the other things require no expense, no violence to oneself.
2:151
請告訴我,不說惡言、也全然不毀謗人,這有甚麼勉強呢?不嫉妒別人所擁有的好處,這有甚麼勉強呢?不被虛榮所擄,又有甚麼勉強呢?受試煉而能忍耐,這是屬乎堅忍的;
For what violence, tell me, is there in not speaking evil, nor slandering anyone at all? What violence in not envying the good things of others? Or what violence in not being caught by vainglory? To be put to the test and to endure — that belongs to fortitude;
2:152
操練屬靈的智慧,也是屬乎堅忍的;
it belongs to fortitude also to practise the love of wisdom;
2:153
忍受貧窮,是屬乎堅忍的;
to fortitude belongs the bearing of poverty;
2:154
to fortitude belongs the wrestling with hunger and thirst.
2:155
But when none of these things is present, and it is possible, while enjoying what you have as befits a Christian, not to envy the possessions of others — what violence is there in that? Envy comes from nowhere else than from being glued fast to present things; or rather, all evils come from that.
2:156
For if you considered riches, and the glory of this world, to be nothing, you would not envy those who have them.
2:157
但既然你對它們張口垂涎、驚嘆不已、心神震動,正因如此,嫉妒的苦楚才攪擾你,虛榮的苦楚也因此攪擾你;
But since you gape after them, and marvel at them, and are all aflutter over them, for this reason the pangs of envy trouble you, and for this reason also the pangs of vainglory;
2:158
and everything springs from this — from marvelling at the things of the present life.
2:159
You envy so-and-so because he is rich? Yet such a man is worthy rather of pity and of tears.
2:160
It is I who am worthy of tears, not he.
2:161
You too are worthy of tears — not because you are poor, but because you reckon yourself pitiable.
2:162
For those who have no ill and yet are discontented — these we weep for, not because they have some evil, but because, having none, they think they have.
2:163
請告訴我:一個已從發燒中痊癒的人,卻仍煩躁不安、輾轉反側,明明身體健康卻躺在床上,這樣的人豈不是比那些發燒的人更該受人流淚嗎——不是因為他發燒,因為他根本沒有發燒,而是因為他明明沒有可怕的病,卻自以為有病?照樣,你也正為此該受人流淚,就是你自以為可憐——並非因為你的貧窮;
Tell me: if a man freed from fever should toss and turn restlessly, lying on his bed though he is well, is not such a one more worthy of tears than the fevered — not because he has fever, for indeed he has none, but because, having nothing dreadful, he thinks he has something? So you too are worthy of tears for this reason, that you reckon yourself pitiable — not on account of your poverty;
2:164
for on account of your poverty you are rather to be counted blessed.
2:165
Why do you envy the rich man? Because he has made himself liable to more cares, because he is under a harsher slavery, because he is bound to his own riches by ten thousand chains, like a dog? Evening comes upon him, night comes upon him, and he keeps the time of rest as a time of tumult, of distaste, of grief, and of anxiety.
2:166
A noise is heard? At once he springs up.
2:167
Has so-and-so been robbed? The one who has lost nothing is more anxious than the one who has lost.
2:168
因為那損失的人只是一次性地失去了,悲傷過後便卸下了掛慮;
For that man lost his goods once for all, and, having grieved, laid aside his care;
2:169
but this man keeps his anxiety perpetually.
2:170
Night has come — the haven of our ills, the solace of our misfortunes, the medicine of our wounds.
2:171
因為那些被某種劇痛所轄制的人,往往連朋友、親屬、家人的安慰都不肯讓步、不肯退卻,甚至連父親的安慰也不接受,反倒因他們的言語而動怒;
For indeed those held fast by some overwhelming pain have often not yielded nor given way to friends and kinsmen and household members, and often not even to fathers who sought to console them, but were even provoked at their very words;
2:172
因為痛苦的苦澀比任何酷熱更加壓迫我們的心靈;
for the bitterness of pain oppresses our souls more than any burning heat;
2:173
yet to sleep, which bids them cease, they had not strength even to look back in resistance.
2:174
Just as, then, a body burning hot and worn out by wrestling with a fiercer ray of heat, as though into some
2:175
有許多泉源、又有清風徐徐相慰的居所;
lodging that has many springs and the solace of a gentle breeze;
2:176
照樣,黑夜把我們的心靈交付於睡眠;
so night delivers our soul over to sleep;
2:177
or rather, it is not night, nor sleep, that accomplishes this, but God, who, knowing this wretched race of ours, wrought all these things.
2:178
But we do not pity ourselves; rather, as though we were enemies of ourselves, we have devised a tyranny greater than natural necessity and rest — the sleeplessness that comes from riches.
2:179
'For the anxiety of wealth,' it says, 'drives away sleep.'
2:180
看哪,神的看顧是何等的大;
And behold how great is God's providence;
2:181
祂沒有把安息交託給我們的意志,也沒有把睡眠的需要交給我們的抉擇,乃是用天然的必需將它牢牢捆住,使我們即或不願,也蒙受益處;
He did not entrust rest to our resolve, nor the need of sleep to any choice of ours, but bound it fast by natural necessities, so that even against our will we might be benefited;
2:182
for to sleep belongs to nature.
2:183
But we, as though hating ourselves exceedingly, as though warring upon and afflicting others, have devised a tyranny from riches greater than this natural necessity.
2:184
Has day come? Such a man dreads informers.
2:185
Has night come? He trembles at robbers.
2:186
Has death drawn near? He is stung by death all the more, because those things become others'.
2:187
他得了孩子嗎?他的貪慾就更大了;
Has he had a child? His desire grows greater;
2:188
and then he seems to himself to be poor.
2:189
Has he had none? He is grieved the more.
2:190
Do you then count this man blessed — the man who can find pleasure from nowhere? Do you envy this man, tossed by the storm, while you yourself stand in the calm harbour of poverty? Truly this too is a defect of human nature, not to bear good things nobly, but to run riot amid prosperity.
2:191
但當我們離世往那裡去的時候,且聽那富人怎麼說——就是那位如你所說擁有萬千好處的人;
But when we depart to that place, hear what the rich man says — he who was lord of ten thousand good things, as you would put it;
2:192
for I, at least, would not call these things good, but indifferent.
2:193
This man, then, the lord of ten thousand good things — hear what he says, and of what he stands in need:
2:194
'Father Abraham,' he says, 'send Lazarus, that with the tip of his finger he may drop water upon my tongue, for I am scorched as in a frying-pan.'
2:195
因為那富人縱然沒有遭受我所說的任何事,縱然他一生都在安穩無憂中度過;
For even if that rich man had suffered none of the things I have spoken of, even if he had passed his whole life in security and free from care;
2:196
我何必說他一生呢?就連那一瞬間也是如此;
why do I say his whole life? that one brief moment;
2:197
因為經上說,我們的一生比起那無窮的永世,不過如一瞬間;
for our whole age, it says, is but as a single moment compared with the age that is without end;
2:198
if, then, everything had gone forward for him according to his wish, is he not to be pitied for these words — or rather, for these facts? Did not your table overflow with wine? Yet now you are not master even of a drop of water, and that when you stand in great need.
2:199
Did you not overlook the poor man covered with sores? Yet now you crave to see him, and no one grants it.
2:200
他曾躺在你的門口,如今卻在亞伯拉罕的懷裡;
He lay beside your gate, but now he is in the bosom of Abraham;
2:201
you lay beneath great roofs, but now you are in the fire of Gehenna.
2:202
願富人們都聽這些話;
Let the rich hear these things;
2:203
或者說,不是富人,乃是那些沒有憐憫的人;
or rather, not the rich, but the unmerciful;
2:204
for it was not because he was rich that he was punished, but because he showed no mercy.
2:205
For it is possible, while being rich and merciful, to attain to every good thing.
2:206
And for this reason he sees no other, but only that man who was in need of him, so that he may learn that he suffered these things justly, being brought to remembrance of what he had done.
2:207
Were there not ten thousand righteous poor? But the one who lay at his gate — this one appears to him, teaching both him and us how great a good it is not to have put one's trust in riches.
2:208
貧窮絲毫沒有攔阻那人得著國度;
Poverty in no way harmed that man as regards attaining the kingdom;
2:209
riches in no way profited this man as regards escaping Gehenna.
2:210
你要窮到幾時呢?要作乞丐到幾時呢?貧窮的並不是那一無所有的人,乃是那貪求許多的人;
How long will you be poor? How long beggarly? He is not, he is not poor who has nothing, but he who desires much;
2:211
he is not rich who has acquired much, but he who is in need of nothing.
2:212
For what profit is it to have gained the whole world, and yet to pass one's days in greater despondency than the man who has nothing? It is the disposition of the will that makes men both rich and poor, not the abundance of riches nor the lack of it.
2:213
你這貧窮的人,願意成為富足嗎?只要你願意,這是你力所能及的,也沒有人能攔阻你;
Do you, who are poor, wish to become rich? It is in your power, if you will, and there is no one to hinder you;
2:214
當藐視這世界的錢財;
despise the riches of the world;
2:215
reckon them to be nothing, just as indeed they are nothing; cast out the desire of wealth, and you have become rich.
2:216
這才是富足的人——就是那不願富有的人;
This is the rich man — the one who does not wish to be rich;
2:217
He who is unwilling to be poor, this is the man who is truly poor.
2:218
Just as that man is sick who frets even while in health, and not he who bears illness more easily than any state of health, so too here the poor man is he who cannot endure poverty, but who amid wealth deems himself poorer than the destitute; not he who bears poverty more easily than the rich bear their riches.
2:219
For this latter is rather the richer man.
2:220
Tell me, why do you dread poverty? Why do you tremble at it? Is it not because of hunger? Is it not because of thirst? Is it not because of cold? Or is it not for these things? But there is not, there is not a single man who has ever wanted for these things.
2:221
For look to the generations of old, and behold:
2:222
who ever put his trust in the Lord, and was forsaken? Or who ever hoped in Him, and was put to shame? And again: Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them.
2:223
No one could point out to us any man who has speedily perished from hunger and cold.
2:224
For what reason, then, do you tremble at poverty? You cannot say.
2:225
For if you have the necessities in abundance, why ever do you tremble at it? Because you have not a multitude of servants? This is to be rid of masters, this is perpetual blessedness, this is freedom from care.
2:226
But is it because you have no vessels and couches and furniture fashioned out of silver? Yet what more does the man who possesses these have in the way of enjoyment? Nothing.
2:227
For the benefits of use are equal, whether the thing be made of this material or of that.
2:228
But is it because you are not fearsome to the many? May you never be so.
2:229
For what pleasure is there in others' trembling and being afraid of you? But is it because you are afraid of others? Yet there is no cause to be afraid.
2:230
Do you wish not to fear the authority? Do what is good, and you shall have praise from it.
2:231
But is it, one says, because we are held in contempt and are ready targets for suffering ill? Above all, it is not poverty that does this, but wickedness.
2:232
Since, while many poor men pass their whole life free from trouble, rulers and rich men and potentates have come to an end more wretchedly than all evildoers and robbers and grave-plunderers.
2:233
For what poverty is in your case, that wealth is in his.
2:234
因為正如那些想要加害你的人,因你被人輕看而害你;
For just as those who wish to harm you do you ill here because you are despised,
2:235
照樣,他們也因嫉妒和惡意而害那富人;
so they harm him out of envy and malice;
2:236
而後者更甚於前者;
and these more than those;
2:237
this necessity of doing ill is the stronger.
2:238
因為嫉妒的人竭盡全力、使盡權勢做一切的事,而輕視人的人卻往往反倒憐憫那被輕視的;
For he who envies does everything with all his might and power, whereas he who despises has often even taken pity on the one despised;
2:239
and this very thing has proved to him the cause of his deliverance—that he is poor, that he has no power to wield strength.
2:240
他們對那有權勢的人說:你若除掉某人,你若殺掉一個窮人,就必成就大事;
You will accomplish great things, they say to the great man, if you destroy so-and-so, if you kill a single poor man;
2:241
how many rewards will you not enjoy? And thus we soften their wrath.
2:242
But over the rich stands envy, not ceasing until it accomplishes what it wills and pours out its own venom.
2:243
Do you see that neither poverty nor wealth is a good, but rather our own free choice? Let us therefore order this rightly, let us train it to practice true wisdom.
2:244
這意志若妥善調適,財富就不能將我們逐出神的國,貧窮也不能使我們有所虧損;
If this is well disposed, neither will wealth be able to cast us out of the kingdom, nor will poverty make us the poorer;
2:245
but we shall bear poverty gently, suffering no harm either in the enjoyment of the good things to come, nor here.
2:246
我們不但要享受今生這些美物,也要得著天上美善的福分;
but we shall both enjoy these things, and attain the good things in the heavens;
2:247
which may it be granted us all to attain, and so forth.
