Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended.
12:2
But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
12:3
Nothing so empties and puffs up right achievements as the memory of the good deeds we have wrought.
12:4
For it breeds two evils: it makes men more slothful, and it lifts them up into arrogance.
12:5
Therefore Paul, since he knew that our nature is quickly inclined to sloth, and since he had also praised the Philippians in many respects, see how he curbs their pride—by many other means above, but chiefly by the present passage.
12:6
By saying what? Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended.
12:7
But if Paul has not yet apprehended, and is not yet confident concerning the resurrection nor concerning the things to come,
12:8
then hardly would those men, who had not accomplished even a fraction of what he had, have acted in such a way.
12:9
'I consider that I have not yet apprehended the whole of virtue,' he says,
12:10
speaking thus as if one were to say of a runner, 'He has not yet reached the goal.'
12:11
'I have not yet accomplished the whole,' he says.
12:12
But if he says elsewhere, 'I have fought the good fight,' and here, 'I count not myself yet to have apprehended,' whoever reads both passages will well understand the reason both of those words and of these.
12:13
For one must not continually turn over the same things and explain everything to us—including that he said those words much earlier, and these near the end.
12:14
'I count not myself yet to have apprehended,' he says, 'but this one thing I do—I reach forth unto the things which are before.'
12:15
For this is what he means: 'This one thing—forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.'
12:16
See how, in saying this, he made clear what it was that caused him to reach forth unto the things which are before.
12:17
因為那自以為已經完全、以為在成就德行上一無所缺的人,就會停止奔跑,好像已經全然得著了;
For he who thinks himself already perfected, and that he lacks nothing for the accomplishment of virtue, would indeed cease running, as having apprehended the whole;
12:18
but he who still thinks himself far from the finish will never cease running.
12:19
This, then, we must always reckon, even though we accomplish ten thousand good deeds.
12:20
For if Paul, after ten thousand deaths, after so many dangers, reckoned thus, how much more should we!
12:21
'Yet I did not slacken,' he says, 'because after running so far I had not prevailed; nor did I despair, but I still run, I still contend;'
12:22
'this alone I aim at—that I may make progress.'
12:23
So must we also do—forget our achievements, and leave them behind.
12:24
For the runner too does not reckon how many laps he has finished, but how many remain.
12:25
Let us reckon, not how much of virtue we have accomplished, but how much remains for us.
12:26
For what does the accomplishment profit us, when what remains is not added to it? And he did not say, 'I do not reckon,' nor 'I do not remember,' but 'Forgetting'—making us more attentive.
12:27
For thus we become vigorous, when we take up all our eagerness for what remains, when we consign those past things to forgetfulness.
12:28
'Reaching forth,' he says—before we arrive, we are eager to seize it.
12:29
For he that reaches forth is this man: the one who, though his feet are running, is eager to have them outstrip the rest of the body, stretching himself forward and extending his hands, that he may accomplish something more of the course.
12:30
And this comes from great eagerness, from great ardor.
12:31
So must the runner run—with such diligence, with such eagerness, not slackened.
12:32
And as great as is the distance between one who runs thus and one who lies flat on his back, so great is the distance between Paul and us.
12:33
他天天在死,天天蒙神喜悅稱許;
He died daily; daily he won approval;
12:34
沒有一個時刻、沒有一段光陰,他的賽程不在增進;
there was no season, no time, in which his course did not increase for him;
12:35
他不只是願意領受,乃是要奪取那獎賞;
he did not merely wish to receive, but to snatch the prize;
12:36
on high stands He who gives the prize; on high lies the prize.
12:37
你看要跑過的這段路程何等遙遠,你看那高度何等崇高;
See how great a distance this is to traverse; see how great the height;
12:38
人必須用聖靈的翅膀飛到那裡;
thither one must fly with the wings of the Spirit;
12:39
for otherwise there is no way to cleave this height.
12:40
人必須連同身體一起走到那裡;
Together with the body one must journey thither;
12:41
'For our conversation,' he says, 'is in heaven;'
12:42
你看那些賽跑者如何按規矩而活嗎?他們如何不容任何耗損體力之物進入?他們如何在角力場中天天在教練與規則之下操練爭戰?你也要效法這些人,不但如此,更要顯出比他們更大的熱切;
Do you see how runners live by rule? how they admit nothing of the things that sap their strength? how they contend every day in the wrestling-school under a trainer and by rule? Imitate these men yourself—nay, rather display even greater eagerness;
12:43
因為耗損體力的事物有許多;
for many are the things that sap the strength;
12:44
要使它腿腳輕健,宜於奔跑;
make it nimble-limbed for the foot-race;
12:45
for this is not a matter of nature, but of choice.
12:46
讓我們使它輕省,免得其餘的重擔攔阻雙腳的敏捷;
Let us make it light, that the remaining burden may not hinder the swiftness of the feet;
12:47
要教導雙腳站立得穩;
teach the feet to be sure;
12:48
for if you fall, you have lost much.
12:49
然而你即使跌倒了,也要重新站起來;
Yet even if you fall, rise up again;
12:50
切莫嘗試那些滑溜危險的事,你就不至跌倒;
Never attempt slippery affairs, and you will not fall;
12:51
keep the head up, keep the eye aloft.
12:52
This too the trainers charge their runners:
12:53
But if you look downward, you have fallen, you are undone.
12:54
要向上看,那獎賞所在之處;
Look up, where the prize is;
12:55
單單注目那獎賞,就使人的心志更加剛強;
the very sight of the prize makes the resolve greater;
12:56
the hope of the tribulation does not let one feel the toils, and makes the length appear short.
12:57
What is the prize? Not a palm branch, but what? The kingdom of heaven, everlasting rest, glory with Christ, an inheritance, brotherhood, ten thousand good things which cannot be told.
12:58
那獎賞的美麗是無法述說的;
It is not possible to describe the beauty of that prize;
12:59
he alone knows it who possesses it, and he who is about to receive it.
12:60
它不是金製的,也不是鑲嵌寶石的;
It is not of gold, it is not set with precious stones;
12:61
與那獎賞相比,黃金不過是污泥;
Gold is but mire compared to that prize;
12:62
precious stones are but brick beside the beauty of that prize.
12:63
你若握有那獎賞而進入天上,就能在那裡帶著極大的尊榮而行,眾天使也必因你手持這獎賞而向你致敬;
If, possessing that, you depart into heaven, you will be able to walk there with great honor, and angels will reverence you as you bear this prize;
12:64
you will approach all with great boldness.
12:65
'This I do in Christ Jesus,' he says.
12:66
因為若沒有祂的扶助,就無法跑過這麼遙遠的路程;
For it is not possible, apart from His aid, to traverse so great a distance;
12:67
great is the help needed, great the alliance.
12:68
祂定意要你在下面爭戰,卻在上面為你加冠;
Below He willed you to contend, but above He crowns you;
12:69
not as here, where the contest is, there also the crown, but this crown is in that resplendent place.
12:70
Do you not see, even in this present world, that those athletes and charioteers who are most highly honored are not crowned down below in the stadium, but the king summons them up above and crowns them there? So it is here also:
12:71
it is into heaven that you receive the prize.
12:72
"Let us, therefore, as many as are perfect," he says, "be thus minded."
12:73
"And if in anything you are otherwise minded, this also God shall reveal to you."
12:74
這是甚麼呢?就是必須忘記背後的事;
What is this? That we must forget the things behind;
12:75
so that it belongs to the perfect man not to consider himself to be perfect.
12:76
How then do you say, "As many as are perfect"? For tell me, do we hold this which you hold? For if you have not attained, nor been made perfect, how do you bid the perfect to be minded of this which you yourself are minded of, though you are not yet perfect? For this itself, he says, is perfection. "And if in anything you are otherwise minded, this also God shall reveal to you."
12:77
That is to say: But if anyone supposes that he has accomplished the whole—
12:78
yet he did not put it thus, but rather in this way:
12:79
"And if in anything you are otherwise minded, this also God shall reveal to you."
12:80
請看他說這話是何等審慎;
Observe how guardedly he says this;
12:81
that is: God will persuade you—not simply teach you.
12:82
For Paul indeed taught, but it was God who moved them inwardly.
12:83
And he did not say "He will move you," but "He will reveal," so that the matter might rather seem to be one of ignorance.
12:84
These things are said not concerning doctrines, but concerning perfection of life, and about not considering oneself to be perfect.
12:85
Ὡς ὅ γε .
For he who supposes that he has grasped the whole possesses nothing.
12:86
"Nevertheless, so far as we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind."
12:87
「然而,我們到了甚麼地步」——這是甚麼意思呢?他說,如今我們既已成就了甚麼,就當持守它:即那愛的、那同心的、那和睦的事;
"Nevertheless, so far as we have already attained"—what does this mean? For the present, he says, let us hold fast what we have accomplished: that which pertains to love, to concord, to peace;
12:88
"So far as we have attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind."
12:89
that is: This has already been accomplished by us.
12:90
Do you see that he means his precepts to be a rule? A rule admits neither addition nor subtraction, since it thereby loses its being a rule.
12:91
that is, by the same faith, by the same definition.
12:92
"Brethren, be imitators of me, and mark those who so walk, even as you have us for an example."
12:93
他在前面曾說:「你們要防備犬類」,使他們離開那些人;
Above he had said, "Beware of the dogs," and led them away from those men;
12:94
now he brings them, for the rest, to those whom they ought to imitate.
12:95
他說,若有人願意效法我們,若有人願意走同一條路,就當留意這些人;
If anyone wishes to imitate us, he says—if anyone wishes to tread the same road—let him give heed to these;
12:96
and if I am not present, yet you know the manner of my walking—that is, of the conduct of my life.
12:97
因為他不單用言語施教,也用行為施教;
For he taught not by words alone, but also by deeds;
12:98
正如在歌隊中、在軍隊中,其餘的人必須效法歌隊的領班與將帥,如此才能整齊有序地前進;
just as in a chorus and in an army the rest must imitate the leader of the chorus and the general, and so march in good order;
12:99
for it is possible for order to be dissolved even by a single standing apart.
12:100
So then the apostles were a pattern, preserving a certain archetypal image.
12:101
Consider how exactly ordered their life was, so that they were set forth as an archetype and example, and as living laws.
12:102
For whatever the Scriptures said, these men made plain to all through their deeds.
12:103
這乃是最上乘的教導;
This is the best kind of teaching;
12:104
thus will the teacher be able to lead his disciple onward.
12:105
But if he himself speaks and philosophizes, while by his works he does the contrary, he is not yet a teacher.
12:106
因為對門徒而言,這也是輕而易舉的事——即在言語上高談道理;
For this too is easy for the disciple—to philosophize in words;
12:107
然而必須有藉著行為而來的勸誡與陶造;
but there is need of admonition and training through works;
12:108
for this both makes the teacher venerable and disposes the disciple to yield.
12:109
怎麼說呢?因為門徒若看見師傅只在言語上高談道理,就必說他所吩咐的乃是不可能的事;
How so? For when he sees him philosophizing in words only, he will say that he has enjoined impossible things;
12:110
and that they are impossible, the teacher himself is the first to show, by not practising them.
12:111
But if he sees virtue perfected through works, he could not say these things.
12:112
然而,縱使師傅的生活是疏忽怠惰的,我們也當謹慎自守,並當聽從先知所說的:「他們都要蒙神的教訓」;
Nevertheless, even if the teacher's life be neglectful, let us give heed to ourselves, and let us hearken to the prophet who says, "They shall all be taught of God";
12:113
and, "They shall not teach every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all shall know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them."
12:114
你沒有一位有德的師傅嗎?但你有那位真正的師傅,就是唯獨祂當被稱為師傅的那一位;
You have no virtuous teacher? Yet you have the true Teacher, whom alone it is fitting to call Teacher;
12:115
it was He who said, "Learn of Me, for I am meek."
12:116
所以你不要注目於那師傅,乃要注目於祂並祂的教訓;
Give heed then not to the teacher, but to Him and to His lessons;
12:117
conform yourself to that model.
12:118
聖經中所陳列有德生活的形像,多得數不勝數;
Countless are the images of virtuous lives set forth in the Scriptures;
12:119
譬如,你若願意,就在那師傅之後,來到眾門徒中間;
for instance, if you will, come, after the Teacher, to the disciples;
12:120
這一位藉著無所擁有而發光,那一位藉著財富而發光;
the one shone through the possession of nothing, the other through wealth;
12:121
譬如以利亞藉著一無所有,亞伯拉罕藉著財富;
for instance, Elijah through possessing nothing, Abraham through wealth;
12:122
whichever you deem the lighter and the more suited to you, come to that one.
12:123
再者,這一位藉著婚姻,那一位藉著童貞;
Again, the one through marriage, the other through virginity;
12:124
亞伯拉罕藉著婚姻,那一位藉著童貞;
Abraham through marriage, that other through virginity;
12:125
for each of these leads toward heaven.
12:126
The one through fasting—John; the other without fasting—Job.
12:127
再者,就是這約伯,他既掛念妻子、兒女、女兒和家室,又擁有極多的財富;
Again, this same man had care for wife and children and daughters and household, and possessed much wealth;
12:128
the other possessed nothing, except his garment of hair.
12:129
And why do I speak of house and wealth and possessions, when it is possible to lay hold of virtue even while dwelling in a palace? For the royal household might be found busier than any private house whatsoever.
12:130
大衛在王位上發出光輝,那紫袍與冠冕絲毫沒有使他鬆懈;
David, then, shone forth in his kingdom, and neither the purple robe nor the diadem unnerved him;
12:131
another was entrusted with the leadership of a whole people—I mean Moses—which is indeed the harder thing.
12:132
For here the authority was greater, whence also the difficulty became the greater.
12:133
你已看見有人在財富中蒙悅納,也看見有人在貧窮中蒙悅納;你已看見有人在婚姻中,也看見有人在童貞中;
You have seen men well approved in wealth, you have seen them also in poverty; you have seen them in marriage, you have seen them also in virginity;
12:134
如今你再看那反面的:有人在婚姻中、有人在童貞中滅亡,有人在財富中、有人在貧窮中滅亡;
behold now, on the contrary, men who perished both in marriage and in virginity, and in wealth and in poverty;
12:135
譬如在婚姻中,許多人滅亡了,如參孫——然而並非因著婚姻,乃是因著他自己的抉擇;
for instance, in marriage many of mankind perished, such as Samson—yet not because of the marriage, but because of his own choice;
12:136
在童貞中,如那五個童女;
and in virginity, such as the five virgins;
12:137
in wealth, the rich man who overlooked Lazarus; in poverty, countless men even now perish as paupers.
12:138
I show you many who perished in a kingdom, in the leadership of a people.
12:139
但你願意看見有人即使在軍職之中也得蒙拯救嗎?你看那哥尼流;
But do you wish to see men saved even in the military order also? Behold Cornelius;
12:140
And in the stewardship of a household? Consider the eunuch of the Ethiopian queen.
12:141
因此,倘若我們在凡事上都按當行的方式運用財富,就沒有甚麼能毀滅我們;
Thus, if in every respect we use wealth as we ought, nothing will destroy us;
12:142
but if we do not, everything will destroy us—royalty, poverty, and wealth alike.
12:143
The sober-minded man, however, nothing shall be able to harm.
12:144
你且告訴我,被擄有甚麼傷害呢?毫無傷害;
For tell me, what harm did captivity do? None at all.
12:145
你且與我想想約瑟,他淪為奴僕,卻仍保守了他的美德;
For consider with me Joseph, who became a slave and yet preserved his virtue;
12:146
consider with me Daniel and the three young men, who were made captives, and how much the more brightly they shone.
12:147
For everywhere virtue shines forth, and is unconquerable, and nothing can hinder it.
12:148
我何必單說貧窮、被擄與為奴呢?連飢荒、瘡痍、疾病都不能傷害它;
Why do I speak of poverty, and captivity, and slavery? Not even famine, nor ulceration, nor disease can harm it;
12:149
for disease is more grievous than slavery.
12:150
Such was Lazarus, such was Job, and such too was Timothy, who was beset by frequent infirmities.
12:151
你看見沒有?沒有甚麼能勝過美德——無論是財富、是貧窮、是掌權、是受人管轄、是主理事務、是疾病、是羞辱、是被人棄絕;
Do you see that nothing can prevail over virtue? Not wealth, not poverty, not rule, not being ruled, not the management of affairs, not disease, not dishonour, not being cast out;
12:152
but leaving all these things below upon the earth, it presses on toward heaven.
12:153
Only let the soul be noble, and there is nothing to prevent it from being virtuous.
12:154
For when the workman is strong, none of the outward things hinders him.
12:155
確實,各樣技藝也是如此:當工匠既有經驗,又能忍耐,並精通全部技藝時,即使疾病臨到他,他仍保有這技藝;即使他貧窮,他仍保有它;無論他手中有沒有工具,無論他做工與否,他都毫無虧損;
And indeed so it is with the crafts also: when the craftsman is experienced and enduring and master of his whole art, then, even if disease come upon him, he retains it; even if he be poor, he retains it; whether he have his tool in hand or not, whether he work or work not, he is in no way the loser;
12:156
for the knowledge is within him.
12:157
So too the virtuous man, who is devoted to God: whether you cast him into wealth, he displays his virtue; whether into poverty, likewise; whether into sickness, or into health, or into glory, or into dishonour.
12:158
Did not the apostles pass through all these things? 'Through glory,' he says, 'and dishonour, through evil report and good report.'
12:159
這正是造就一個競技勇士的東西:對凡事都能應付自如;
This is what makes an athlete: to be fit for all things;
12:160
such also is the nature of virtue.
12:161
But if you say, 'I cannot preside
12:162
眾人的事,我理當獨居度日」,你就是侮辱了美德;
over many, I ought to live in solitude,' you have insulted virtue;
12:163
for virtue can avail itself of all conditions and shine through them, if only it be present in the soul.
12:164
Is there famine? Is there abundance? For in these virtue displays its own strength, even as Paul says: 'I know both how to abound and how to suffer need.'
12:165
Was it needful to work? He was not ashamed, but worked for two years.
12:166
Was it needful to endure famine? He was not consumed with anxiety, nor did he waver.
12:167
需要面對死亡嗎?他並未變得卑怯;
Was it needful to die? He did not become abject;
12:168
in all things he displayed his noble spirit and his art.
12:169
Him, then, let us emulate, and there will be no occasion of grief for us.
12:170
For what, tell me, could grieve such a man? Nothing.
12:171
So long as no one takes this from us, we shall be more blessed than all men—and that here, not only there.
12:172
就讓那有德之人既有妻子、兒女、財產,又有極大的榮耀吧;
For let the virtuous man have both a wife and children and possessions and much glory;
12:173
在這一切之中,他仍舊照樣是有德的;
in the midst of all these he remains equally virtuous;
12:174
把這些奪去,他仍要照樣是有德的,既不被患難所淹沒,也不因順境而自高;
take these away, and he will again be equally virtuous, neither overwhelmed by afflictions nor puffed up by prosperity;
12:175
反倒像一塊磐石,無論海洋洶湧或是風平浪靜,它都同樣屹立不動、不受攪擾,既不被波濤沖碎,也不因平靜而有任何改變;
but like a rock, whether the sea rages or is calm, it stands unmoved and unaffected alike, neither shattered by the waves nor undergoing any change by reason of the calm;
12:176
so also the steadfast soul stands firm and secure both in calm and amid the waves.
12:177
又如船上的孩童在慌亂騷動,而舵手卻安坐著發笑、不為所動,看著他們的騷亂並以此為樂;
And just as the little children on board a ship are thrown into confusion, while the pilot sits laughing and unmoved, beholding their tumult and taking delight in it;
12:178
so also the philosophic soul, when all others are thrown into confusion and, again, laugh unseasonably amid the changes of affairs, itself sits as upon some height and at the helm of godly reverence, unmoved.
12:179
For what, tell me, can disturb a reverent soul? Death? But it knows this to be the beginning of a better life.
12:180
But poverty? But this works together with it toward virtue.
12:181
But disease? But it counts it as nothing even when present.
12:182
我何必單說疾病呢?連安逸與患難也都不能動搖它;
Why do I speak of disease? Neither ease nor affliction moves it;
12:183
for it has already afflicted itself beforehand.
12:184
But dishonour? But the whole world has been crucified to it.
12:185
是喪失兒女嗎?但它並不懼怕;
But the loss of children? But it does not fear;
12:186
for when it is fully assured concerning the resurrection, what can lay hold of it? Nothing at all.
12:187
是財富使它高傲嗎?斷乎不能;
But does wealth exalt it? By no means;
12:188
for it knows that riches are nothing.
12:189
But glory? But it has been taught that all the glory of man is as the flower of the grass.
12:190
But luxury? But it has heard Paul saying that 'she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.'
12:191
When, therefore, it is neither inflamed nor contracted, what could equal this health? But the other souls are not so; rather, they change more often than the sea and the chameleon.
12:192
So that it is a great matter for laughter when you see the same man now laughing, now weeping, now anxious, now poured out beyond all measure.
12:193
And indeed Paul says, 'Be not conformed to this world,' for no other reason than that we have our citizenship in heaven, where there is no change.
12:194
所應許給我們的獎賞是永不變遷的;
Prizes that change not have been promised to us;
12:195
let us therefore display such a manner of life, and let us receive the good things even now from here.
12:196
Why do we cast ourselves into a whirlpool, and into surge, and into storm, and into tempest? Let us come into calm.
12:197
It does not depend on wealth, nor on poverty, nor on glory, nor on dishonour, nor on disease, nor on health, nor on weakness, but all these things depend on our own soul.
12:198
If it be steadfast and well trained in the knowledge of virtue, all things will be easy for it.
12:199
它甚至從今生此地就已能望見自己的安息,望見那風平浪靜的港灣;當它前往那裡時,就要得著無數的美福;
And even from here it will already behold its rest, and the fair haven, and, departing thither, it will attain to countless good things;
12:200
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
