'And what I shall choose, I know not.'
4:2
'For I am hemmed in between the two, having the desire to depart and to be with Christ;'
4:3
'for that is far better;'
4:4
'yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.'
4:5
'And having this confidence, I know that I shall remain, and continue with you all, for your progress and joy of faith;'
4:6
'that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me, through my coming to you again.'
4:7
Nothing is more blessed than Paul's soul, since nothing is more noble.
4:8
但如今論到我們眾人,正好可以說相反的話;
But now it is timely to say the opposite concerning all of us;
4:9
nothing is weaker than we, nor more wretched.
4:10
For this reason we all shudder at death—some because of the multitude of their sins, of whom I myself am one; others because of their love of life and their wretchedness, among whom may I never be.
4:11
For they are men of the natural mind who are gripped by this fear.
4:12
This very thing, then, at which we all shudder, that man prayed for, and toward it he pressed on, saying, 'To depart is far better; yet what I shall choose I know not.'
4:13
What do you say? Being about to be removed from here into heaven, and to be with Christ, do you not know what you will choose? But these things are far from the soul of Paul.
4:14
因為若有人向別人說了這事,並加以確證,那人豈不立刻就抓住它嗎?「是的,」他說;
For if anyone had told this to another and confirmed it, would he not straightway have seized upon it? 'Yes,' he says;
4:15
'but just as it does not rest with us to depart and to be with Christ,
4:16
照樣,當我們能得著這事的時候,留在此地也不在於我們;
so neither does it rest with us, when it is possible to attain this, to remain here;
4:17
but both belong to Paul and to that soul of his.'
4:18
What do you say? You know and are persuaded that you are about to be with Christ, and yet you waver, saying, 'I know not what I shall choose'? And not this only, but you even choose the things here, I mean to abide in the flesh? What in the world can this be? Was not the life you lived exceedingly bitter—in watchings, in shipwrecks, in hunger and thirst and nakedness, in anxieties, in cares? With the weak you were weak, and for those who were made to stumble you burned.
4:19
「在許多的忍耐中,」他說,「在患難、窮乏、困苦、鞭打、監禁、擾亂、勤勞、禁食、廉潔之中;
'In much patience,' he says, 'in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in fastings, in purity;
4:20
五次被猶太人鞭打,每次四十減去一下;三次被棍打,一次被石頭打,一晝一夜在深海裡;
five times I received forty stripes save one, thrice I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, a night and a day I have spent in the deep;
4:21
in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils among false brethren.'
4:22
Was it not you who, when the whole nation of the Galatians turned back to the observance of the Law, cried out saying, 'You who would be justified by the Law have fallen from grace'? How greatly did you then mourn—and yet you still long for this perishable life? For if none of these things had befallen you, but you had accomplished all that you accomplished in security and in ease, ought you not, in fear of the uncertainty of what is to come, to hasten toward some harbor? What merchant, tell me, having his vessel full of countless treasures, when he might run into harbor and take his rest, would choose to be still tossed upon the sea? What contestant, when he might
4:23
得冠冕的時候,卻情願繼續爭戰呢?哪一個拳鬥的人,當他能束上冠冕的時候,卻情願再入賽場,砍破自己的頭呢?哪一種的元帥,當他能帶著榮譽與凱旋離開戰場,與君王同在王宮中安歇的時候,卻甘願仍舊流汗、列陣作戰呢?你既度著這樣艱苦的生活,怎麼還願留在此地呢?豈不是你自己說過:「恐怕我傳福音給別人,自己反被棄絕了」?縱使沒有別的緣故,單為這一件,你也當渴望得著釋放;
be crowned, would choose to go on contending? What boxer, when he might bind on the crown, would choose to enter the arena again and to cut open his own head? What sort of general, when he might depart from the war with glory and trophies and rest with the king in the royal palace, would consent still to sweat and to be drawn up in battle array? How then, living so bitter a life, do you still wish to remain here? Were you not the one who said, 'I fear lest, having preached to others, I myself should be found disqualified'? If for no other reason, then for this at least you ought to have desired your release;
4:24
even if the present things were full of countless blessings, yet for the sake of Christ whom you long for, you ought to have longed for release from them.
4:25
Oh, the soul of Paul!
4:26
Nothing equal to it has ever come to be, nor shall be.
4:27
你懼怕將來,你被無數的可怕之事所纏繞,卻仍不願與基督同在嗎?「不然,」他說;
You fear the future, you are hemmed in by countless terrors, and yet you do not wish to be with Christ? 'No,' he says;
4:28
「這也是為基督的緣故,好叫我所造就作祂僕人的,對祂更加忠誠;
'and this too is for Christ's sake, that I may render those whom I have made His servants more devoted to Him;
4:29
that the field which I have planted I may cause to bear fruit.'
4:30
你們豈沒有聽見我說,我不求自己的益處,只求別人的益處嗎?你們豈沒有聽見,為要使許多人歸向基督,我寧願自己被咒詛,與基督分離嗎?那揀選了那事的人,豈不更要揀選這事,甘心藉著遲延與延緩使自己受損,好叫那些人能得著某種救恩嗎?主啊,誰能述說你的大能,就是你不容保羅隱藏不彰,向普世顯明了這樣一個人?當你造眾星的時候,眾天使都同心讚美你,那麼當你造太陽的時候也是如此;
Did you not hear me, that I seek not my own advantage, but that of my neighbors? Did you not hear that I could wish to be accursed from Christ for the sake of many coming to Him? Shall not he who chose that far rather choose this—gladly damaging himself by the delay and the postponement, that to those others some salvation might come? Who shall tell of Your mighty acts, O Lord, that You did not suffer Paul to lie hidden, that You showed to the world such a man? All the angels praised You with one accord when You made the stars—surely also when You made the sun;
4:31
but not so much as when You showed us and the whole world Paul.
4:32
For this reason the earth has become more radiant than heaven; this man, more brilliant than the light of the sun, sent forth more dazzling gleams and spread out more resplendent rays.
4:33
這人為我們結出了何等的果子——不是使麥穗肥美,也不是使石榴繁茂,乃是結出敬虔的果子,使它茁壯成熟,又不斷把那衰敗的重新恢復過來?這也是理所當然的;
How great a fruit did this man bring forth for us—not fattening ears of grain, nor nourishing pomegranates, but bearing the fruit of godliness, bringing it to its prime, and continually restoring it when it fell away? And rightly so;
4:34
for this sun of ours can do nothing to profit the fruit of the trees once it has utterly rotted.
4:35
然而保羅卻把那些有無數腐爛之處的人,從罪中呼喚回來;
But Paul called back from their sins those who had countless corruptions;
4:36
and this sun yields to the night, but that man overcame the devil.
4:37
Nothing overtook him, nothing mastered him.
4:38
那太陽從高處運行,將光線向下投射;
The one, borne on high, casts its rays downward;
4:39
but he, rising from below, did not fill with light merely the space between heaven and earth, but the moment he opened his mouth, he filled the very angels with abundant delight.
4:40
How so? For if there is joy in the heavens over one sinner that repents, and he in his very first discourse hunted down many, how should he not fill the powers above with joy?
4:41
And why do I say this? Simply for Paul to speak is enough for the heavens to leap and rejoice over it.
4:42
For if, when the Israelites went out of Egypt, the mountains leaped like rams,
4:43
when men were removed from earth to heaven, how great do you think the joy was? For these reasons, 'To abide in the flesh is more needful for your sakes.'
4:44
那麼,我們此後還有甚麼可推諉的呢?因為人往往分得一座又小又窮的城,卻不肯遷往別處,寧願要自己的安息;
What excuse, then, shall we henceforth have? For often a man is allotted a small and poor city, and does not choose to depart elsewhere, preferring his own repose;
4:45
保羅本可以離世歸於基督,他卻沒有揀選基督;
Paul had it in his power to depart to Christ, and yet he did not choose Christ;
4:46
他所如此渴慕的基督,甚至為祂的緣故寧願揀選地獄;
Christ, whom he so longed for that for His sake he would even choose hell;
4:47
and yet he still remained, striving for the sake of men.
4:48
我們還有甚麼可推諉的呢?我們豈能只是隨口提一提保羅呢?且看他所成就的;
What excuse shall we have? But ought we merely to make mention of Paul in passing? See what he wrought;
4:49
他表明離世原是更好的,勸他們不要憂傷;
he showed that it was better to depart, persuading them not to grieve;
4:50
he showed that even if he remains, he remains for this reason, for their sake, and that it does not come about from the wickedness of those who plot against him.
4:51
Therefore, that he might render them worthy of belief, he also set down the reason.
4:52
「因為若這是要緊的,那麼我必要留下——並且不僅是留下,乃是與你們同在;
'For if this is needful, then assuredly I shall remain—and not simply remain, but remain with you;
4:53
for this is the meaning of 'And I shall continue with you,' that is, 'I shall see you.'
4:54
For what purpose? 'For your progress and joy of faith.'
4:55
Here he also rouses them, so that they might take heed to themselves.
4:56
'For if for your sakes,' he says, 'I remain, see that you do not put my remaining to shame.'
4:57
'Being about to see Christ, I chose to remain for the sake of your progress.'
4:58
'Since my presence contributes both to your faith and to your joy, for this reason I chose to remain.'
4:59
那麼怎樣呢?他是單為腓立比人的緣故留下嗎?他並非單為他們的緣故留下;
What then? Did he remain for the sake of the Philippians alone? He did not remain for their sakes alone;
4:60
but he says this in order to comfort them.
4:61
But how was it possible to make progress in faith? 'That you may be the more established, like fledglings that have need of the mother until their wings are set firm.'
4:62
This is a token of great love.
4:63
In this way we too rouse certain persons, as when we say:
4:64
'For your sake I remained, that I might make you good.'
4:65
'That your boasting,' he says, 'may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my coming to you again.'
4:66
你看見這正是「我要與你們同住」的意思嗎?且看他的謙卑;
Do you see that this is the meaning of 'I shall continue with you'? Behold his humility;
4:67
since he said, 'For your progress,' he shows that it is also for his own benefit.
4:68
This he does also when writing to the Romans, saying:
4:69
這就是「在你們中間同得安慰」;
and this is 'to be comforted together among you';
4:70
having first said, 'That I may impart to you some spiritual gift.'
4:71
But what is the meaning of 'That your boasting may abound'? That which was indeed their boasting—to be established in the faith (for this is boasting in Christ), to live uprightly.
4:72
'Your boasting in me through my coming to you again'? 'Yes,' he says.
4:73
'For what is our hope, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you? For you are our boasting, just as we are yours;'
4:74
that is, 'that I may have grounds to boast in you the more.'
4:75
How? 'That your boasting may abound.'
4:76
'For I have the more to boast of, when you have advanced.'
4:77
'Through my coming to you again.'
4:78
What then? Did he come to them? This you inquire—whether he came.
4:79
'Only,' he says, 'conduct yourselves worthily of the Gospel of Christ.'
4:80
Do you see that he said all these things for this purpose, that he might urge them on to give themselves to virtue? 'Only conduct yourselves worthily of the Gospel of Christ.'
4:81
What is the meaning of 'Only'? It means: this alone is what is sought, and nothing else.
4:82
If this be so, no grief will befall us.
4:83
That whether I come and see you, or am absent, I may hear the tidings concerning you.
4:84
他說這話,並不是因為改變了心意,也不是說他不再前來;
He says this not as one changing his mind, nor as though he would no longer come;
4:85
but he says: if this comes to pass, I am able to rejoice even while absent.
4:86
If I hear that you stand fast in one spirit and one soul.
4:87
這件事最能使信徒緊密聯合,並將愛心維繫住;
This above all is what welds believers together and holds love firm;
4:88
for this reason Christ says, 'That they may be one.'
4:89
For indeed, 'A kingdom divided against itself shall not stand.'
4:90
為此,保羅也在各處竭力勸勉人要同心合意;
For this reason Paul also everywhere gives much counsel in favour of concord;
4:91
and for this reason Christ also says, 'By this shall all know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.'
4:92
就是說:不要單指望我的到來而懈怠沉睡,好像盼望我要前來;
That is: do not fall asleep looking to my expected coming, as though awaiting my arrival;
4:93
and then, when you see that I do not come, grow slack.
4:94
For indeed I am able to rejoice equally from mere report.
4:95
What is the meaning of 'in one spirit'? It means: in the same gift, that of concord, that of zeal.
4:96
For the spirit is one, and this he shows by the fact that it is so spoken of in many places.
4:97
For thus it is possible also to stand fast in one soul, when we all have one spirit.
4:98
看哪,「一個」這詞是就同心而說的;
See, the word 'one' is spoken with reference to concord;
4:99
'The heart,' it says, 'of all was one, and the soul.'
4:100
Striving together for the faith of the Gospel.
4:101
Is it then as though the faith were contending, that they strive together, he means, with one another? What sense would that make? For surely they were not wrestling against one another? But what he means is this:
4:102
Take one another as fellow-companions, he says, in the contest for the faith of the Gospel.
4:103
And in nothing terrified by your adversaries, which is to them
4:104
a token of perdition, but to you of salvation.
4:105
因為出自仇敵的事都是如此;
for such are the things that come from enemies;
4:106
所以他說「凡事」不怕,無論發生什麼事,無論是危險,無論是陰謀;
'In nothing' therefore, he says, whatever may happen, whether dangers, whether plots;
4:107
for this is the mark of those who stand upright.
4:108
For those men can do nothing but only terrify.
4:109
Since it was likely that they were troubled, seeing that Paul was suffering countless things,
4:110
'I do not say,' he says, 'Be not shaken,' but 'Be not terrified'; nay rather, utterly despise them.
4:111
For if you are so disposed, you will thereby already make plain both their perdition and your own salvation.
4:112
For when they see that, though they devise countless schemes, they cannot even terrify you, they will take it as a proof of their own perdition.
4:113
因為當逼迫人的勝不過被逼迫的,設謀害人的勝不過被害的,掌權欺壓的勝不過被欺壓的,這豈不立時向他們顯明:他們必要滅亡,他們一無所能,他們的事是虛謊的,而那些人的事雖看似軟弱卻是有力的嗎?他說:這也是出於神;
For when the persecutors do not prevail over the persecuted, the plotters over those they plot against, the strong over those they would master, will it not straightway be plain to them that they shall perish, that they avail nothing, that their cause is false and the others' cause, though weak in appearance, is strong? And this too is from God, he says;
4:114
for to you it was granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake.
4:115
Again he teaches them to keep their thoughts modest, ascribing all to God, and calling it grace and a gift and a bounty to suffer for Christ.
4:116
所以不要以這恩賜為恥;
So be not ashamed of the gift;
4:117
for it is in truth far more wonderful than to raise the dead and to work signs.
4:118
For in the one case I am a debtor, but in the other I have Christ as my debtor.
4:119
So that we ought not only not to be ashamed, but even to exult, as having a gift of grace.
4:120
他稱各樣美德為恩賜,然而卻不像其他的恩賜那樣;
He calls the virtues gifts of grace, yet not in the same manner as the other gifts;
4:121
for those are wholly of God, but these are also of ourselves.
4:122
But since here too the greater part is God's, for this reason he says it is wholly His, not overturning free will, but fashioning them to be modest-minded and thankful.
4:123
Having the same conflict which you saw in me.
4:124
That is: you have also the example.
4:125
Again here he lifts them up.
4:126
For he shows that everywhere they were contending in the same struggles as himself, undergoing the same contests, both privately and each on their own, by sharing his trials together with him.
4:127
他沒有說「你們聽見了」,而是說「你們看見了」;
He did not say 'You have heard,' but 'You saw';
4:128
for there too he contended, in Philippi.
4:129
So then this is a great virtue.
4:130
Wherefore also, writing to the Galatians, he said, 'Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it be indeed in vain?'
4:131
And again, writing to the Hebrews, he said, 'But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings; partly by being made a spectacle through reproaches and afflictions, and partly by becoming partakers with those who were so treated.'
4:132
And again, writing to the Macedonians, that is, to the Thessalonians, he said:
4:133
'For they themselves report concerning us what manner of entering in we had unto you;'
4:134
'For you yourselves know, brethren, our entering in unto you, that it was not in vain.'
4:135
And to all alike he bears the same witness, of contests and struggles.
4:136
但如今在我們中間卻找不到這樣的事了;
But nowadays you will not find this among us;
4:137
for now it is much if anyone suffer anything even in the matter of money.
4:138
在錢財的事上,他也大大地為他們作見證;
And in the matter of money too he bears them great witness;
4:139
for to the one he says, 'You received with joy the plundering of your possessions;'
4:140
and to another he says, 'It pleased Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor;'
4:141
and again, 'Your zeal has stirred up the greater number.'
4:142
Do you see the praises of the men of that time? But we do not endure even so far as buffetings, nor even a blow, nor do we bear insult or the loss of money.
4:143
那些人早已是滿有熱心的,並且都是爭戰如殉道者一般的;
Those men were already zealous, and all of them contending as martyrs;
4:144
but we have let grow cold our love toward Christ.
4:145
Again I am compelled to accuse the present state of affairs.
4:146
And what am I to do? I would not wish it, but I am compelled.
4:147
因為若藉著緘默不言,就能藉那緘默使所發生的事消失,那就當緘默;
For if by keeping silence and saying nothing it were possible, through that silence, to make what happens vanish away, then one ought to keep silent;
4:148
but if the contrary comes to pass (for not only does it not vanish when we are silent, but it becomes even worse)
4:149
For he who accuses those who sin, even if he accomplish nothing else, does not suffer the evil to advance further.
4:150
For there is no soul so shameless and reckless that, when it continually hears certain people reproaching it, it is not put to shame, nor relaxes somewhat of its great wickedness.
4:151
因為即便在那些無恥的人身上,也確實有著一點點的羞恥之心;
For there is, indeed there is, even in the shameless some small measure of shame;
4:152
for God sowed shame into our nature.
4:153
因為既然單靠懼怕不足以約束我們,祂便又設立了許多別的途徑,使我們不致犯罪;
For since fear alone did not suffice to govern us, He also devised many other ways to keep us from sinning;
4:154
such as, to be accused by our fellow men, to dread the established laws, to love good repute, to lay claim to friendship.
4:155
For all these are ways of not sinning.
4:156
因為許多不為神而行的事,卻因著羞恥之心而成就了;
For oftentimes what was not done for God's sake has been done out of shame;
4:157
and what was not done for God's sake has been done through fear of men.
4:158
For this is the thing sought after:
4:159
首先,要學會不犯罪;
first, to learn not to sin;
4:160
then afterwards we shall succeed in doing this for God's sake.
4:161
For why does Paul, when urging those who are to prevail over their enemies, exhort them not from the fear of God, but even from awaiting requital? For in doing this, he says, you shall heap coals of fire upon his head.
4:162
For meanwhile this is what he desires, that virtue be accomplished.
4:163
因此正如我所說的,我們裡面有一種容易感到羞恥的傾向;
As then I was saying, there is in us something prone to shame;
4:164
因為我們天生就有許多趨向德行的良善;
for we have many natural goods disposed toward virtue;
4:165
for instance, we all as human beings are moved by nature toward showing mercy, and nothing else in our nature is so good as this.
4:166
Whence one might reasonably inquire why this above all has been sown into our nature—I mean, to be broken down by tears, to be bent with compassion, to be ready for mercy.
4:167
沒有人天生就懶惰,沒有人天生就不慕虛榮,沒有人天生就勝過嫉妒;
No one is by nature slothful, no one is by nature free from vainglory, no one is by nature superior to envy;
4:168
but the showing of mercy is implanted by nature in all, even if one be brutal, even if he be harsh.
4:169
我們對人施行這事又有何足奇?我們甚至憐憫野獸;
And what wonder if we display this toward human beings, when we pity even wild beasts?
4:170
so abundantly is mercy implanted in us.
4:171
即使我們看見獅子的幼崽,也會有所感動;
Even if we see a lion's cub, we feel something;
4:172
but toward one of our own kind, much more so.
4:173
See how many cripples there are, we often say, knowing that this too is enough to move us to mercy.
4:174
Nothing so gladdens God as mercy.
4:175
所以祭司要用這膏油受膏,君王和先知也是如此;
Therefore the priests were anointed with this, and the kings, and the prophets;
4:176
for the oil was a symbol of God's lovingkindness toward mankind.
4:177
他們又被教導,作首領的必須更多地具有憐憫;
Again they were being taught that the ruler must have mercy in fuller measure;
4:178
這顯明了,聖靈臨到人乃是因著憐憫;
it was made plain that the Spirit is to come upon man because of mercy;
4:179
since God has mercy on men, and deals lovingly with them.
4:180
For You have mercy on all, it says, because You can do all things.
4:181
For indeed He established the priesthood out of mercy, and the kings were anointed with oil.
4:182
人若要稱讚一位首領,再沒有比憐憫更適合他的話了;
And if one praises a ruler, he will say nothing so fitting for him as mercy;
4:183
for this is proper to rule—to show mercy.
4:184
Consider that the world was established through mercy, and imitate the Master.
4:185
The mercy of man is upon his neighbor, but the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh.
4:186
怎麼說「加給凡有血氣的」呢?無論你說的是罪人,還是說義人,我們眾人都需要神的憐憫;
How, upon all flesh? Whether you name sinners, or whether you name the righteous, we all stand in need of God's mercy;
4:187
we all enjoy it, be it Paul himself, or Peter, or John.
4:188
你且聽他們自己這樣說;
And hear them saying so;
4:189
for there is no need of words of ours.
4:190
For what does this blessed one say? But I obtained mercy, because I did it in ignorance.
4:191
What then? Did he not need mercy after this? Hear what he says again:
4:192
I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
4:193
And concerning Epaphroditus he says:
4:194
他實在是病了,幾乎要死,然而神憐憫了他,不但憐憫他,也憐憫我,免得我憂上加憂;
For indeed he was sick, nigh unto death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow;
4:195
and again, We were weighed down, he says, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life.
4:196
我們自己心裡也曾斷定是必死的,叫我們不靠自己,只靠那叫我們脫離這極大死亡的神,祂曾救了我們,也必再救我們;
But we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God, who delivered us from so great deaths, and will deliver us;
4:197
and again, I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion, and the Lord will deliver me.
4:198
And everywhere we shall find him boasting of this—that it was by mercy.
4:199
And Peter too became such through having obtained mercy.
4:200
For hear Christ saying to him:
4:201
Peter, Peter, Satan has desired to sift you as wheat, but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not.
4:202
And John too was such through mercy, and all the apostles simply likewise.
4:203
For hear Christ hinting at this and saying:
4:204
You did not choose Me, but I chose you.
4:205
因為我們眾人都需要神的憐憫;
For we all stand in need of God's mercy;
4:206
For the mercy of God, it says, is upon all flesh.
4:207
But if these men needed God's mercy, what would one say concerning the rest? For whence, tell me, does He make the sun rise upon the evil and the good? And what? If He held back the rain for only a single year, would He not destroy all men? And what, if He wrought a flood of rain? And what, if He rained down fire? And what, if He sent flies? But why do I say these things? If He made darkness, as He once did, would He not destroy all men? If He shook the earth, would not all perish? What is man, that You are mindful of him? It is timely now to say:
4:208
if He but threaten the earth, all men become one grave.
4:209
經上說,看哪,萬民都像水桶裡的一滴,在祂面前如此;
As a drop of water from a bucket, it says, so are the nations before Him;
4:210
they shall be counted as spittle, as the tipping of a balance.
4:211
As it is easy for us to move the beam of a balance, so it is for Him to destroy all things, and to make them again.
4:212
那位對我們擁有如此大權柄的主,看見我們天天犯罪,卻不刑罰我們——豈不是以憐憫托住我們嗎?就連牲畜也是靠憐憫而生存、而蒙保守;
He then who has such great authority over us, and who sees us sinning daily, and yet does not punish us—does He not sustain us by mercy? Since even the cattle both are and are preserved by mercy;
4:213
For You will save both men and cattle, O Lord, it says.
4:214
He looked upon the earth, and filled it with living creatures.
4:215
但論到你——祂為何造你呢?豈不是出於良善嗎?再沒有比膏油更好的了;
But you—why did He make you? Was it not out of goodness? Nothing is better than oil;
4:216
it is the cause of light both there and here.
4:217
先知說,你若向鄰舍施憐憫,你的光就必發現如早晨的光;
And your light shall break forth as the morning, says the prophet, if you show mercy to your neighbor;
4:218
Just as this oil affords light to those at sea, so almsgiving there bestows on us a great and wondrous light.
4:219
And great was Paul's discourse concerning this mercy.
4:220
你且聽他有時說,只是願意我們記念窮人;
For hear him at one time saying, Only that we should remember the poor;
4:221
And at another time he says, 'If it be worthy that I also should go.'
4:222
And everywhere, up and down, you see him taking anxious thought about this.
4:223
And again, 'Let our people also learn to be forward in good works.'
4:224
And again, 'For these things are good and profitable unto men.'
4:225
Hear, too, another who says, 'Almsgiving delivereth from death.'
4:226
And another, 'If thou shouldst take away mercy, O Lord, Lord, who shall stand?' And, 'If thou shouldst enter,' he says, 'into judgment with thy servant.'
4:227
And another, 'A man is a great thing, and a merciful man an honourable one.'
4:228
For this is what makes a man—to be merciful.
4:229
Or rather, this is what God is—to show mercy.
4:230
Do you see how great is the power of the mercy of God? This it was that made all things; this fashioned the world; this made the angels, out of goodness alone.
4:231
For this reason also He threatened hell, that we might attain the kingdom.
4:232
And we attain the kingdom through mercy.
4:233
For tell me, why, when God was alone, did He make so many beings? Was it not out of goodness? Was it not out of love toward man? If you ask why this and why that, everywhere you will find His goodness.
4:234
Let us therefore have mercy on our neighbours, that we ourselves may obtain mercy.
4:235
It is not for them so much as for ourselves that we lay up this mercy against that Day.
4:236
When the flame of the fire is fierce, this mercy is a quencher of the fire for it, but for us the cause of light.
4:237
Thus by this shall we be delivered from the fire of hell.
4:238
For otherwise, whence shall one be moved to compassion and show mercy? Mercy springs from love.
4:239
Nothing so provokes God as to be unmerciful.
4:240
There was brought to him one who owed ten thousand talents, and being moved with compassion he forgave him.
4:241
And that man was owed by his fellow-servant a hundred pence, and he took him by the throat.
4:242
For this reason the master delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay what was owing.
4:243
Hearing these things, let us be merciful.
4:244
—toward those who are debtors, whether in money or in sins.
4:245
Let no one be resentful, if indeed he would not wrong himself.
4:246
For by not forgiving him, you do not grieve him so much as you wrong yourself.
4:247
For if you pursue him with vengeance, God does not pursue him.
4:248
But if you leave him alone, then either He Himself pursues him, or He remits your own sins.
4:249
And how, when you do not forgive your neighbour, do you seek the kingdom? That we may not suffer this, let us forgive all men.
4:250
And let us forgive, that God may forgive us our sins, and so may we obtain the good things to come, and what follows.
