「弟兄們,我還有話說,你們要靠主喜樂;
'Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord;
10:2
to write the same things to you, to me indeed
10:3
is not grievous, but for you it is safe.'
10:4
'Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the concision.'
10:5
'For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.'
10:6
Dejection and anxieties, when they strain the soul beyond measure, deprive it of its own strength.
10:7
For this reason Paul also raises up the Philippians, who were in great dejection.
10:8
他們陷在憂愁中,是因為不知道保羅的景況如何;
Now they were in dejection because they did not know how Paul's affairs stood;
10:9
they were in dejection because they supposed that he had already died — on account of the preaching, on account of Epaphroditus.
10:10
Concerning all these things, then, giving them full assurance, he adds:
10:11
'Finally, my brethren, rejoice.'
10:12
他說,你們如今再沒有憂愁的緣由了;
Ye have, he says, no longer any occasion for dejection;
10:13
你們有以巴弗提,你們曾為他憂愁;
You have Epaphroditus, for whom you grieved;
10:14
you have Timothy; I too am coming; the Gospel is being furnished to you.
10:15
What then is lacking to you? Rejoice.
10:16
Now the Galatians he calls children, but these he calls brethren.
10:17
因為每當他想要糾正某事,或要表達深切的慈愛時,他便稱他們為兒女;
For whenever he wishes either to correct something or to display tender affection, he calls them children;
10:18
but whenever he converses with greater honour, he calls them brethren.
10:19
'Finally, my brethren,' he says, 'rejoice in the Lord.'
10:20
他說「靠主」,說得好,不是照著世界的樣式;
Well did he say, 'In the Lord,' not according to the world;
10:21
for it is not possible to rejoice in this world.
10:22
These afflictions, he says, that are according to Christ, have joy in them.
10:23
'To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not irksome, but for you it is safe.'
10:24
Do you see how he does not introduce the exhortation at the outset, but when he had praised them much, when he had admired them, then he does this, and again he praises them?
10:25
因為這番話似乎顯得較為沉重;
For this saying seems to be rather burdensome;
10:26
wherefore he casts a shade over it from every side.
10:27
But of whom does he speak as 'dogs'? Here there were certain men whom he hints at in all his epistles, foul and contemptible Jews, greedy of base gain and lovers of power, who, wishing to draw away many of the faithful, kept proclaiming both Christianity and Judaism, corrupting the Gospel.
10:28
Since therefore they were hard to discern, on this account he says:
10:29
Once the Gentiles were called this, but now those men are.
10:30
Why? Because just as the Gentiles were strangers both to God and to Christ, so now these men also have become, and hence he sets forth their shamelessness and their brazenness, and their great estrangement from the children.
10:31
For that the Gentiles were once called dogs, hear what the Canaanite woman says:
10:32
'for even the little dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.'
10:33
But that they might not have even this claim, since these too are dogs of the household table, he adds that from which he further estranges them, saying, 'Beware of the evil workers.'
10:34
他說「你們要防備那作惡的」,說得極妙;
And admirably did he say, 'Beware of the evil workers;'
10:35
for they do indeed work, he says, but unto evil, and their work is far worse than idleness, since they tear up what has been rightly established.
10:36
'Beware,' he says, 'of the concision.'
10:37
The matter of circumcision was held in reverence among the Jews, seeing that even the Law gave way to it, and the Sabbath was of less account than it.
10:38
因為為要行割禮,安息日便可以廢弛;
For in order that circumcision might take place, the Sabbath was broken;
10:39
but that the Sabbath might be kept, circumcision was never broken.
10:40
And consider with me the economy of God:
10:41
this ordinance, more venerable than the Sabbath, is found to have been [not] passed over at certain times.
10:42
Whenever therefore it itself is set aside, much more is the Sabbath.
10:43
For this reason Paul cuts asunder its very name, and says:
10:44
And he did not say that circumcision is an evil thing, that circumcision is superfluous, lest he should wound the men, but he manages the matter more wisely, drawing them away from the thing while gratifying them in the word, or rather being more zealous even in the thing itself.
10:45
But it is not so in the case of the Galatians.
10:46
因為那裡的病症嚴重,他此後便毫不遮掩、以極大的權柄施加那切割;
For since the disease was great there, with bared head thereafter and with much authority he brings on the cutting;
10:47
但在這裡,既然他們並未做出這樣的事,他便賜給他們因這稱呼而來的喜悅;
but here, since they had done no such thing, he grants them the pleasure that comes from the appellation;
10:48
and those men he casts out, and these too.
10:49
'For we are the circumcision.'
10:50
How? 'Those who worship God in spirit, and put no confidence in the flesh.'
10:51
他沒有說我們要比較那割禮和這割禮哪一種較好,反倒連這名稱都不給它;
He did not say that we test that circumcision and this one, which is better, but he did not even impart the name to it;
10:52
but what does he say? That circumcision is concision.
10:53
Why? For they do nothing else than cut up the flesh.
10:54
For when the thing done is not lawful, it is nothing else than a cutting and a mangling of the flesh.
10:55
Either therefore for this reason he so named it, or because they were attempting to cut up the Church.
10:56
And we too speak of 'concision' in the case of those who do this at random and simply and without skill.
10:57
'For if,' he says, 'circumcision must be sought, you will find this one among us.'
10:58
「那以神的靈敬拜的人」;
'Those who worship God in spirit;'
10:59
that is, those who worship spiritually.
10:60
For tell me, which is better, the soul or the body? It is clear that the soul is.
10:61
Then that circumcision too is not better, but this one alone is circumcision.
10:62
For so long as the type stood, he with reason advanced it by comparison, writing, 'To be circumcised as to the uncircumcision of your heart.'
10:63
Thus also in the Epistle to the Romans he does away with it, saying:
10:64
'For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter.'
10:65
And thereafter he even deprives it of the name: 'Neither is it circumcision,' he says.
10:66
因為那預表,當真理將要來到之時,也被稱為這名;
For the type also, so long as the truth is about to come, is called by this name;
10:67
but when the truth has come, it is no longer so called.
10:68
有人素描一位君王,先以陰影勾勒他的輪廓;
Someone was sketching the outline of a king, drawing him in shadow-work;
10:69
在色彩尚未塗上之前,他還不被稱為君王;
so long as the colours are not laid on, he is not called a king;
10:70
但當色彩一經塗上,那輪廓便被實體遮蔽,不再顯露;
but when they are put on, the outline is hidden by the reality and no longer appears;
10:71
and then we say, 'Behold the king.'
10:72
他並沒有說「因為割禮在我們裡面」,而是說「我們就是」割禮;
And he did not say, 'For in us is the circumcision,' but, 'We are' it;
10:73
for this is a man, the circumcision that is virtuous; this is truly a man.
10:74
但論到那些人,他卻不這樣說,而是說:「你們要防備那妄自行割的」;
But in the case of those men he did not speak thus, but, 'Beware of the concision;'
10:75
for they were thereafter in perdition and in wickedness.
10:76
Then, making clear that circumcision no longer takes place in the body but in the heart, he says:
10:77
'And putting no confidence in the flesh, although I have confidence, even in the flesh.'
10:78
他在此所說的「可倚靠的」和「在肉體上」,是什麼意思呢?就是誇口、坦然、可引以為榮之事;
What does he mean here by 'confidence' and 'in the flesh'? Boasting, boldness, a matter of pride;
10:79
and well did he add this.
10:80
因為他若本是外邦人而攻擊割禮——不僅攻擊割禮,也攻擊那些不合時宜地行它的人——那麼他就會顯得像是一個被剝奪了猶太人高貴身分的人,因不曉得也未曾分享其中的尊榮,才詆毀它;
For if, being of the Gentiles, he had accused circumcision — and not circumcision only, but also those who handled it out of season — he would have seemed, as one deprived of the nobility of Judaism, to be running it down as one who knew not its honourable things nor had partaken of them;
10:81
but now, being one who has partaken and yet accuses, he accuses not on this ground, as one who had no share, but as one who has condemned it, not through ignorance, but rather through full knowledge.
10:82
See then what he says also in the Epistle to the Galatians, when fallen into the necessity of speaking great things about himself, how even so he displays humility of mind:
10:83
For he says, 'You have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism.'
10:84
And again here: 'If anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flesh, I have more.'
10:85
He did not say this at the outset, but only after saying 'if anyone else,' thereby showing the necessity, showing that he spoke on their account.
10:86
'If you are confident,' he says, 'I too am more so.'
10:87
'I say this now, since I had kept silent.'
10:88
並且要留意他的責備何等不使人難堪;
And observe how inoffensive his reproofs are;
10:89
for by not doing this by name, he gave even those men room to retrace their steps.
10:90
他說「自以為」說得很好,或是指那些其實並不擁有這樣大把握的人,或是指那把握本非真正的把握;
And he spoke well in saying 'thinks,' either as of those who do not possess such great confidence, or as of that confidence not being truly confidence at all;
10:91
for all these things belonged to necessity, not to deliberate choice.
10:92
他首先提出他們最引以為傲的事,就是割禮的事;
And first he sets down that which they most prided themselves on, the matter of circumcision;
10:93
he showed both things, that he was neither a proselyte nor descended from proselytes.
10:94
因為從第八天受割禮這一點看來,他不是歸化的外邦人;
For from the fact of being circumcised on the eighth day, he was no proselyte;
10:95
and from the words 'of the stock of Israel,' he was not even of proselyte parents.
10:96
But lest you should suppose that 'of the stock of Israel'
10:97
是指十支派中的一支,他就說「是便雅憫支派的」;
meant of the ten tribes, he says, 'of the tribe of Benjamin';
10:98
如此便是屬於更受尊崇的那一部分;
so that he was of the more approved portion;
10:99
for the priestly offices fell by lot within this tribe.
10:100
From this he shows that he was no proselyte, but from of old among the esteemed Jews.
10:101
For it was possible to be of Israel, yet not a Hebrew of Hebrews.
10:102
For many had by then even corrupted the matter, and were uninitiated in the language, mingling with other nations.
10:103
Either this, then, or he shows from here his great nobility of descent.
10:104
他終於進到那些出於他自己抉擇的事上;
He comes at last to the things that belong to his own deliberate choice;
10:105
for all those former things were not matters of choice.
10:106
因為受割禮不是他自己所能決定的,「是以色列族」也不是,「是便雅憫支派的」也不是;
For to be circumcised was not his own doing, nor the being 'of the stock of Israel,' nor the being 'of the tribe of Benjamin';
10:107
so that even in these respects he has the greater advantage, even though very many shared these things with him.
10:108
那麼「更」在哪裡呢?主要正在於此——在於不是歸化的外邦人,在於出自最受尊崇的支派,在於自古以來出於這樣的祖先,這些都是不多人所能擁有的;
Where, then, is the 'more'? Chiefly indeed in this very thing—in not being a proselyte, in being of the most approved tribe, and in being from of old descended from forefathers, things which not many possessed;
10:109
but since all these were not matters of choice, he comes to the things that do belong to choice, where the 'more' resides.
10:110
'As to the law a Pharisee, as to zeal persecuting the Church.'
10:111
他這樣說,是因為單憑那一件事還不足以顯明那「更」;
He says this because it is not enough to show that 'more' by that one thing alone;
10:112
for it is possible to be a Pharisee and yet not a very great zealot.
10:113
因為一個人可能是魯莽好險的,或是為著貪愛權位而行此事,而非出於為律法的熱心——這正是那些祭司長所行的;
Since it is possible to be reckless, or to do this for the sake of a love of power, and not out of zeal for the law—which is exactly what the chief priests did;
10:114
but rather, 'as to righteousness under the law, having become blameless.'
10:115
'If, therefore, in nobility of birth, and in zeal, and in conduct, and in life I surpassed all men, for what reason did I forsake those honored things?' he says—for no other reason than that I found the things of Christ to be greater, and far greater. Wherefore he added: 'But whatever things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ's sake.'
10:116
保羅既如此拋棄了那從幼年就開始、如此精確嚴謹的生活方式,那樣的高貴出身,那許多的危險、那許多的陰謀、勞苦與殷勤,並且把先前為益處的當作有損的,為要得著基督;
Paul, then, cast away a manner of life so scrupulously exact, begun from his earliest years, so great a nobility of birth, so many dangers, so many plots against him, labors, and diligence, and counted as loss what had before been gain, that he might gain Christ;
10:117
然而我們竟連錢財也不肯輕看,好得著基督,反倒寧可從將來的生命中墜落,也不肯失去眼前的事物;
yet we do not even despise money in order to gain Christ, but choose rather to fall from the life to come than from present things;
10:118
and yet this is nothing other than loss.
10:119
For tell me, let us examine one by one the concerns of wealth, whether each is not a kind of loss, entailing unspeakable toil but no gain whatever.
10:120
For what, tell me, is the benefit from the many and costly garments? What profit do we reap when we are wrapped in them? None, but we are only the losers.
10:121
怎麼說呢?因為連那穿著廉價破舊衣裳的窮人,在炎熱中所受的酷暑並不比你差——其實他反倒更容易忍受;
How so? Because even the poor man, wearing what is cheap and threadbare, in the heat bears the scorching no worse than you—indeed he bears it more easily;
10:122
因為單穿破舊的衣裳,反倒使身體更覺舒暢;
for threadbare garments, worn by themselves, allow the body more freedom;
10:123
but newly-made ones, even if they be finer than a spider's web, are not the same.
10:124
你因著過分的虛榮,備有兩三件小內衣,往往還有外袍、腰帶和褲子;
And you, because of your excessive pomp, have two little tunics, and three, and often a mantle and a girdle and trousers;
10:125
但沒有人責怪那只穿一件小內衣的人;
but no one blames him for wearing but a single little tunic;
10:126
so that he bears the scorching more easily.
10:127
From this we see the rich sweating, while the poor suffer none of these things.
10:128
既然那些廉價、賣不了幾個錢的衣裳能供給他同樣、甚至更好的用途,而那些迫使人付出許多金錢的衣裳所做的也不過如此,那過分的奢華豈不是損失麼?因為就用途與服事而言,它並未多帶來什麼;反倒是你多耗費了金錢,而它所提供的用途與服事卻是一樣的;
When, therefore, cheap garments—those sold for next to nothing—supply him the same use, or even a better one, while those that compel one to pay out much gold do the very same thing, is not the great superfluity a loss? For it has contributed nothing more in terms of use and service; rather, more gold has been drained from you, while it renders the same use and service;
10:129
you the rich man bought it perhaps for a hundred pieces of gold or even more, but the poor man for a little silver.
10:130
Do you see the loss? But pomp does not allow you to see it.
10:131
Will you have us examine this same principle also in the matter of the gold ornaments which they put on horses and women? For among its other effects, wealth also makes people foolish.
10:132
For they deem their women worthy of the same honor as
10:133
兩者的裝飾也是同一樣式;
their horses, and the adornment of both is one and the same;
10:134
and they wish to appear more splendid by means of the very same things by which their teams of horses are adorned, and by which the leather of the curtains is embellished, in which they are carried.
10:135
Tell me, what is the gain in decking out a mule or a horse with gold? And the woman loaded with such a mass of gold and precious stones, what has she the more? 'But the gold does not wear out,' she says.
10:136
其實那些精於此道的人說,連這事也會發生——在浴堂中並在許多地方,寶石與金子都會大大貶值。但就算如此,就算它毫無損傷;
Indeed, those skilled in these matters say that even this does happen—that in the baths and in many places both the stones and the gold lose much of their value. But be it so, and let it suffer no harm;
10:137
what is the gain, tell me? And again, when it is lost and perishes, is it not a loss? And again, when it draws upon one envy and plotting, is it not a loss? For when it profits nothing the woman who wears it, but inflames the eyes of the envious, and rather stirs up robbers, does it not become a loss? And tell me, when it is possible for the husband to use these things for some profitable enterprise, but he cannot because of his wife's extravagance, and is forced to go hungry and be straitened while he sees her decked in gold, is not the thing a loss? For riches were so named for this reason, not that we should use them thus, like the display-cases of the goldsmiths, but that we should accomplish some good work by means of them.
10:138
When, therefore, the craving for gold does not let go its hold, is not the whole thing a loss? For he who dares not use them, as though they were another's, has not used them, and there is nowhere any use at all.
10:139
至於這事又如何呢:當我們建造華美宏大的房屋,用石柱、大理石、廊柱和遊廊來裝飾它們,到處立起偶像和雕像時?其實許多人竟藉著這些召喚鬼魔;
And what of it, when we build houses splendid and great, and adorn them with columns and marbles and porticoes and promenades, setting up idols and carved images everywhere? Many indeed even summon demons by means of these;
10:140
but let us not examine these things.
10:141
What is even the purpose of the golden ceiling? Does it not afford the same use to its owner as a house of moderate proportions? 'But it has great delight,' one says.
10:142
But only for a day or two; thereafter, no longer.
10:143
因為若連太陽都因我們習以為常而不使我們驚歎,何況那些人工的作品呢;
For if the sun does not amaze us because it is familiar to us, much more the works of art;
10:144
but we attend to them as to things of clay.
10:145
For tell me, what does a multitude of columns and the beauty of statues and gold scattered over the walls contribute to an excellent dwelling? Nothing, but it is a matter of effeminacy and insolence and superfluous pomp and folly.
10:146
But everywhere we ought to be among the things that are necessary and needful, not among the superfluous.
10:147
Do you see that the thing is a loss? Do you see that it is superfluous and profitless? For if it neither supplies greater use, nor delight (for in time it becomes cloying), it is nothing other than loss.
10:148
But vainglory, hindering us, does not allow us to see this.
10:149
如此,保羅撇棄了他先前算為益處的那些事;
So then, Paul forsook the very things he had reckoned to be gain;
10:150
難道我們竟不肯為基督的緣故連損失也捨去麼?我們還要被釘在地上多久呢?我們還要多久不仰望天上呢?你們豈不見那些年老的人,他們對已逝之事毫無知覺麼?你們豈不見那些將死的人——無論年老或年少的?你們豈不見那些活著卻被剝奪了這些之人麼?我們為何依戀那些不穩定的事物呢?我們為何緊繫於那些靠不住的事物呢?我們還要多久不去抓住那長存的事物呢?倘若能刮除老年,年老的人有什麼是不肯付出的呢?既然如此,這豈不是極大的不合理麼:人一面渴望重返先前的青春,並樂意為此付出任何代價好變得年輕,另一面卻在有機會領受一種永不衰老的青春——而且是一種遠更屬靈、伴隨大財富的青春——時,連一點點也不肯捨棄,反倒緊抓那些對眼前毫無益處的事物?它不能救你脫離死亡,無力驅走疾病,無力攔阻衰老,這一切按自然律臨到我們的必然之事,它都無能為力;
and shall we not give up even the loss for Christ's sake? How long shall we be nailed to the earth? How long shall we not look up to heaven? Do you not see the aged, how they have no perception of the things that have passed away? Do you not see those who are dying—those in old age, those in youth? Do you not see those who in the midst of living are stripped of these things? Why are we glued to things unstable? Why are we bound fast to things insecure? How long shall we not lay hold of the things that abide? What would the old not give, if only it were possible to scrape away old age? Then, of how great irrationality is it not, to wish to return to one's former youth, and readily to give anything whatever for this, so as to become younger, yet when it is possible to receive a youth that never has old age—and a youth, moreover, far more spiritual, together with great riches—to be unwilling to give up even a little, but to cling to things that profit nothing for the present? It cannot rescue you from death, it has not strength to drive away disease, or to hold back old age, or any of those necessary things that come upon us according to the law of nature;
10:151
and still you hold on to them? What is the gain, tell me? From this come drunkenness, gluttony, pleasures unseemly and of every kind, harsh
10:152
masters, they stretch us all the more upon the rack.
10:153
These are the only things one can gain from wealth, and nothing else, because we are unwilling.
10:154
For if indeed we were willing, we should have inherited heaven itself by means of wealth.
10:155
'Then wealth is a good thing,' someone says.
10:156
It is not wealth that accomplishes this, but the free choice of the one who possesses it.
10:157
For that it is free choice which accomplishes it, consider the matter from this:
10:158
it is possible even for the poor man to inherit heaven.
10:159
For as I have often said, God does not regard the measure of what is given, but the free choice of those who give.
10:160
It is possible for one who is in poverty, and gives little, to carry off the whole reward.
10:161
For God requires things according to one's ability.
10:162
Neither does wealth procure heaven, nor poverty hell, but each of these is procured by free choice, whether good or wicked.
10:163
Let us therefore set this right, let us recover it, let us regulate it, and all things will be easy for us.
10:164
正如工匠無論手中拿的是鐵斧或金斧,一樣能砍削木料,甚至用鐵斧更為順手;
For just as the craftsman, whether he has an iron or a golden axe, works the wood alike—indeed rather more with the iron one—
10:165
so it is here too: virtue is more easily accomplished through poverty.
10:166
For concerning wealth Christ says, 'It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
10:167
But concerning poverty He declared nothing of the sort, but rather the very opposite:
10:168
'Sell your possessions, and give to the poor, and come, follow Me'—since the following depends on free choice.
10:169
Let us not, then, flee from poverty as though it were an evil;
10:170
for it is a procurer of the kingdom.
10:171
And again, let us not pursue wealth as though it were a good;
10:172
for it destroys those who do not give heed.
10:173
But everywhere lifting up our eye to God, let us use for their proper end the things that have been furnished to us by Him—both bodily strength, and abundance of money, and all the rest.
10:174
For it is absurd that, being made by Him, we should render these things serviceable to others, and not to Him who made us.
10:175
Render these serviceable to Him, not to the devil.
10:176
And how will you render them to Him? By contemplating His creatures, and glorifying Him, and turning away from the sight of women.
10:177
Has He made you hands? Possess these for Him, not for the devil—not for rapine and covetousness, but for the commandments and good deeds, lifting them up in fervent prayers, and stretching out a hand to those who have fallen.
10:178
祂造了你的耳嗎?當使這雙耳為祂所用,而非用來聽靡靡之音,也非用來聽污穢之言;
Has He made you ears? Render these to Him, not to broken-down melodies, nor to shameful hearings;
10:179
因為經上說:「你一切的言談,都當在至高者的律法之中」;
for 'Let all your discourse,' it says, 'be in the law of the Most High';
10:180
and again, 'Stand,' it says, 'in the multitude of the elders, and whoever is wise, cleave to him.'
10:181
祂造了你的口嗎?當使它不作任何祂所不喜悅的事,乃要用它來唱詩、頌讚、並靈歌;
Has He made you a mouth? Let it do nothing of the things that are not pleasing to Him, but let it sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs;
10:182
'that it may give grace,' it says, 'to those who hear'—for edification, and not for destruction; for commendation, and not for accusation; not for treacherous plots, but the very opposite.
10:183
祂造了你的腳,不是要你奔向罪惡,乃是要你奔向善事;
He made you feet, not that you should run to wickedness, but to good things;
10:184
祂造了你的肚腹,不是要你把它撐裂,乃是要你操練節制;
He made you a belly, not that you should burst it asunder, but that you should practice self-discipline;
10:185
祂在你裡面放下情慾,是為生養兒女,而非為淫亂與姦淫;
He placed in you desire for the begetting of children, but not for fornication and adultery;
10:186
祂賜給你心思,不是要你褻瀆祂,也不是要你成為辱罵人的,乃是要你頌讚祂;
He gave you a mind, not that you should blaspheme Him, nor that you should be a reviler, but that you should praise Him;
10:187
祂也賜下錢財,是要我們用在當用之處;
He gave also money, that we might use it for what is needful;
10:188
and strength, that in this too we might be found using it for what is needful.
10:189
祂設立各樣技藝,是要維繫人的生計——不是要我們脫離屬靈的事,也不是要我們專注於卑俗的手藝,乃是專注於必需的技藝;
He made the arts, that life might be held together—not that we should separate ourselves from spiritual things, not that we should give heed to the vulgar crafts, but to the necessary ones;
10:190
that we might serve one another, not that we might plot against one another.
10:191
祂賜下屋頂,僅是為遮擋風雨——不是要這人用黃金裝飾它,而讓那窮人餓死;
He gave a roof, that it might merely shelter from the rain—not that this man should adorn it with gold, while the poor man is destroyed by hunger;
10:192
祂賜下衣裳,是要我們遮體,而非要我們炫耀,也非要有人的衣服綴滿黃金,而基督卻赤身將亡;
He gave garments, that we might be covered, not that we might make a display, not that some should have much gold on these, while Christ perishes naked;
10:193
祂賜下住處,不是要你獨自享有,乃是要別人也能有份;
He gave a dwelling, not that you alone should have it, but that others also might;
10:194
He gave the earth, not that you, cutting off the greater part of it for yourself, should squander the good things of God upon harlots and dancers and mimes and flute-players and lyre-singers, but upon the hungry and the needy.
10:195
He gave you the sea, that you might sail, that you might not toil in journeying on foot—not that you should busy yourself with its depths, and bring up stones and such things from thence, nor make this your work.
10:196
'For what purpose, then,' someone says, 'the precious stones?' Nay, tell me rather yourself: for what purpose the precious stones, and how are those things so costly? Is it by their power? Is it by their usefulness? Rather, those which are not such are the useful ones.
10:197
For the latter at least contribute to building, but those contribute to nothing.
10:198
And these are stronger than those.
10:199
'But those,' he says, 'produce beauty.'
10:200
How? The effect is a matter of supposition.
10:201
Are they whiter? But they are not whiter than the exceedingly white marble—no, not even equal to it.
10:202
But are they stronger? Yet not even this could anyone say.
10:203
But more useful? But larger? No, not this either.
10:204
Whence, then, have they been so admired? From nowhere else than from supposition.
10:205
For if they are neither more beautiful (for we shall find others more conspicuous and whiter), nor useful, nor stronger, whence have they been so admired? Is it not from supposition alone? For what purpose, then, did He give them? He did not give them; rather, you supposed them to be something great.
10:206
'What then,' he says, 'of the fact that Scripture also admires these?' It is then speaking to your supposition.
10:207
Since a teacher too, in conversing with a child, in many places admires the same things as the child, whenever he wishes to draw it on and win it over.
10:208
你為何追求衣裳的華美?有衣有鞋披戴在身便足夠了;
Why do you seek beauty of garments? Clothe yourself with a garment and with shoes;
10:209
with these adorn yourself, in these be content.
10:210
David says that the judgments of God are 'to be desired more than gold and much precious stone.'
10:211
但這些寶石又有何價值可言呢?親愛的弟兄們,這些東西並無用處;
But where would these things have any account? These things, beloved, are not useful;
10:212
它們若是有用的,祂就不會吩咐我們藐視它們了;
if they were useful, He would not have commanded us to despise them;
10:213
but the divine Scripture speaks in accommodation to our supposition.
10:214
And this too is a mark of God's loving-kindness.
10:215
'For what purpose, then,' someone says, 'did He give purple, and all such things?' These are works of the majesty of God.
10:216
因為祂也願意藉著別的事物來彰顯祂自己的豐富;
For from other things also He willed to display His own wealth;
10:217
since He gave grain only,
10:218
but you make many things from this—cakes, various and manifold pastries, having much pleasure in them.
10:219
此外,這一切原也是虛榮心所發明出來的;
In another way too, it is vainglory that has devised all these things;
10:220
for it seemed good to you to set them forth above all things.
10:221
Since if some stranger or a farmer, being unacquainted with these things, should ask you, and, seeing you marveling, should say, 'Why do you marvel at these?'—what could you say? That it is beautiful to look upon? But it is not.
10:222
Let us therefore cease from such supposition, and let us cleave to the things that are truly real.
10:223
For these things have no true being, but simply pass away only, flowing by like a river that runs past.
10:224
Wherefore, I exhort you, let us set ourselves upon the rock, that we may both escape being so easily overturned, and may attain to the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
