7:1
For it was no earthly discovery, as I said, that was handed down to them; nor is it a mortal notion that they think it worthwhile to guard so carefully; nor have they been entrusted with the stewardship of human mysteries.
7:2
But the truly almighty and all-creating and invisible God himself, from the heavens, established among men the truth and the holy and incomprehensible Word, and fixed it firmly in their hearts—not, as one might guess, by sending to men some servant or angel or ruler, or one of those who administer earthly affairs, or one of those entrusted with the governance of the heavens, but the very Artificer and Maker of all things himself, by whom he created the heavens, by whom he enclosed the sea within its bounds, whose mysteries all the elements faithfully keep, from whom the sun received the measure of the courses of the day to keep, whom the moon obeys when he bids her shine by night, whom the stars obey as they follow the course of the moon, by whom all things have been ordered and bounded and made subject—the heavens and the things in the heavens, the earth and the things in the earth, the sea and the things in the sea, fire, air, the abyss, the things in the heights, the things in the depths, the things between. Him he sent to them.
7:3
Did he then send him, as one might reckon in human terms, in tyranny and fear and terror?
7:4
By no means! But in gentleness and meekness, as a king sending his son who is a king, he sent him as God; he sent him as man to men; he sent him as one who saves, as one who persuades, not as one who compels—for compulsion is not an attribute of God.
7:5
He sent him as one calling, not pursuing; he sent him as one loving, not judging.
7:6
For he will send him as judge; and who shall endure his coming?
7:7
[Do you not see them thrown to wild beasts, that they may deny the Lord, yet not overcome?
7:8
Do you not see that the more of them are punished, the more others multiply?
7:9
These do not seem to be the works of man; these are the power of God; these are the proofs of his coming.
