A certain Cerinthus, who had himself been trained in the learning of the Egyptians, taught that the world was not made by the first God, but by a certain Power separated and remote from the Authority that is above all things, and ignorant of the God who is over all. He supposed that Jesus was not born of a virgin, but was the son of Joseph and Mary, like all other men, and that he was more righteous, more prudent, and wiser than the rest. And after his baptism, the Christ, in the form of a dove, descended upon him from that Sovereignty which is above all things; and then he proclaimed the unknown Father and performed mighty works. But toward the end, the Christ withdrew from Jesus; and Jesus suffered and rose again, while the Christ remained impassible, being spiritual and belonging to the Father.
