But the chastity of a monk is judged in his thoughts; to whom indeed, when his disciples were drawing near to hear, it is said by the Lord: 'Whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart' (Matt. 5:28). For when he who is consecrated to God gazes upon her face, it is to be feared lest he find in his soul something to be abhorred: lest perchance, according to the saying of Saint Peter, they have eyes full of lust and adultery (2 Pet. 2:14). And what does it profit to be a virgin in body, if one is not a virgin in mind? For God is a spirit (John 4:24), and he dwells in the spirit and the mind which he sees to be unstained; in which there is no adulterous thought, no stain of a defiled spirit, no blemish of sin.
