17:1
ט֤וֹב פַּ֣ת חֲ֭רֵבָה וְשַׁלְוָה־בָ֑הּ מִ֝בַּ֗יִת מָלֵ֥א זִבְחֵי־רִֽיב׃
κρείσσων ψωμὸς μεθ’ ἡδονῆς ἐν εἰρήνῃ ἢ οἶκος πλήρης πολλῶν ἀγαθῶν καὶ ἀδίκων θυμάτων μετὰ μάχης
Melior est buccella sicca cum gaudio quam domus plena victimis cum jurgio.
ይኄይስ፡ ፍት፡ ጥዑም፡ ምስለ፡ ሰላም፡ እምቤት፡ ዘምሉእ፡ ብዙኀ፡ ሠናያተ፡ ወእምዘ፡ ዓመፃ፡ ጥብሕ፡ ምስለ፡ ጋእዝ።
Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.
17:2
עֶֽבֶד־מַשְׂכִּ֗יל יִ֭מְשֹׁל בְּבֵ֣ן מֵבִ֑ישׁ וּבְת֥וֹךְ אַ֝חִ֗ים יַחֲלֹ֥ק נַחֲלָֽה׃
οἰκέτης νοήμων κρατήσει δεσποτῶν ἀφρόνων ἐν δὲ ἀδελφοῖς διελεῖται μέρη
Servus sapiens dominabitur filiis stultis, et inter fratres haereditatem dividet.
ገብር፡ ጠቢብ፡ ይሜብል፡ አጋእዝተ፡ ዐብዳነ፡ ወምስለ፡ እኃው፡ ይትካፈል፡ ርስተ።
A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.
17:3
מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וּבֹחֵ֖ן לִבּ֣וֹת יְהֹוָֽה׃
ὥσπερ δοκιμάζεται ἐν καμίνῳ ἄργυρος καὶ χρυσός οὕτως ἐκλεκταὶ καρδίαι παρὰ κυρίῳ
Sicut igne probatur argentum et aurum camino, ita corda probat Dominus.
በከመ፡ ይትፈተን፡ ወርቅ፡ ወብሩር፡ በከውር፡ ከማሁ፡ ኅሩያነ፡ ልብ፡ በኀበ፡ እግዚአብሔር።
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but Yahweh tests the hearts.
17:4
מֵ֭רַע מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל־שְׂפַת־אָ֑וֶן שֶׁ֥קֶר מֵ֝זִ֗ין עַל־לְשׁ֥וֹן הַוֺּֽת׃
κακὸς ὑπακούει γλώσσης παρανόμων δίκαιος δὲ οὐ προσέχει χείλεσιν ψευδέσιν
Malus obedit linguae iniquae, et fallax obtemperat labiis mendacibus.
እኩየ፡ ያሠምዕ፡ ልሳኖሙ፡ ለእለ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ሕግ፡ ጻድቅሰ፡ ኢይኔፅር፡ ከናፍረ፡ ሐሰት።
An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
17:5
לֹעֵ֣ג לָ֭רָשׁ חֵרֵ֣ף עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ שָׂמֵ֥חַ לְ֝אֵ֗יד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה׃
ὁ καταγελῶν πτωχοῦ παροξύνει τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν ὁ δὲ ἐπιχαίρων ἀπολλυμένῳ οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται ὁ δὲ ἐπισπλαγχνιζόμενος ἐλεηθήσεται
Qui despicit pauperem exprobrat factori ejus, et qui ruina laetatur alterius non erit impunitus.
ለምእመን፡ ኵሉ፡ ዘበዓለም፡ ንዋዩ፡ ወለዘኢምእመንሰ፡ ኢፀሪቅ፡ ሎቱ።
Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
17:6
עֲטֶ֣רֶת זְ֭קֵנִים בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת בָּנִ֣ים אֲבוֹתָֽם׃
στέφανος γερόντων τέκνα τέκνων καύχημα δὲ τέκνων πατέρες αὐτῶν τοῦ πιστοῦ ὅλος ὁ κόσμος τῶν χρημάτων τοῦ δὲ ἀπίστου οὐδὲ ὀβολός
Corona senum filii filiorum, et gloria filiorum patres eorum.
ዘይስሕቆ፡ ለነዳይ፡ ይዌህኮ፡ ለፈጣሪሁ፡ ወዘይትፌሣሕ፡ ላዕለ፡ ዘይትኀጐል፡ ኢይድኅን፡ ወዘይምሕርሰ፡ ይትሜሐር።
Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children is their parents.
17:7
לֹא־נָאוָ֣ה לְנָבָ֣ל שְׂפַת־יֶ֑תֶר אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־לְנָדִ֥יב שְׂפַת־שָֽׁקֶר׃
οὐχ ἁρμόσει ἄφρονι χείλη πιστὰ οὐδὲ δικαίῳ χείλη ψευδῆ
Non decent stultum verba composita, nec principem labium mentiens.
አክሊሎሙ፡ ለአእሩግ፡ ውሉደ፡ ውሉድ፡ ወምክሖሙ፡ ለውሉድ፡ አበዊሆሙ።
Excellent speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.
17:8
אֶבֶן־חֵ֣ן הַ֭שֹּׁחַד בְּעֵינֵ֣י בְעָלָ֑יו אֶֽל־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֖ר יִפְנֶ֣ה יַשְׂכִּֽיל׃
μισθὸς χαρίτων ἡ παιδεία τοῖς χρωμένοις οὗ δ’ ἂν ἐπιστρέψῃ εὐοδωθήσεται
Gemma gratissima exspectatio praestolantis ; quocumque se vertit, prudenter intelligit.
ኢይትዋደዶ፡ ለዐብድ፡ ከናፍረ፡ ወሃይምንት፡ ወኢጻድቅ፡ ከናፍረ፡ ሐሰት።
A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.
17:9
מְֽכַסֶּה־פֶּ֭שַׁע מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אַהֲבָ֑ה וְשֹׁנֶ֥ה בְ֝דָבָ֗ר מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף׃
ὃς κρύπτει ἀδικήματα ζητεῖ φιλίαν ὃς δὲ μισεῖ κρύπτειν διίστησιν φίλους καὶ οἰκείους
Qui celat delictum quaerit amicitias ; qui altero sermone repetit, separat foederatos.
ዓስበ፡ ሞገስ፡ ትምህርት፡ ለእለ፡ አጥረይዋ፡ ኀበ፡ ተመይጠ፡ ታሤኒ፡ ፍኖቶ።
He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.
17:10
תֵּ֣חַת גְּעָרָ֣ה בְמֵבִ֑ין מֵהַכּ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל מֵאָֽה׃
συντρίβει ἀπειλὴ καρδίαν φρονίμου ἄφρων δὲ μαστιγωθεὶς οὐκ αἰσθάνεται
Plus proficit correptio apud prudentem, quam centum plagae apud stultum.
ዘየኀብእ፡ አበሳሁ፡ ይፈቅድ፡ ዕርቀ፡ ወዘይጸልእሰ፡ ኀቢአ፡ ይሌሊ፡ አዕርክተ፡ ወሰብአ፡ ቤት።
A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.
17:11
אַךְ־מְרִ֥י יְבַקֶּשׁ־רָ֑ע וּמַלְאָ֥ךְ אַ֝כְזָרִ֗י יְשֻׁלַּח־בּֽוֹ׃
ἀντιλογίας ἐγείρει πᾶς κακός ὁ δὲ κύριος ἄγγελον ἀνελεήμονα ἐκπέμψει αὐτῷ
Semper jurgia quaerit malus : angelus autem crudelis mittetur contra eum.
የኃዝን፡ ትምክሕት፡ ልበ፡ ጠቢብ፡ ወዐብድሰ፡ ተቀሢፎ፡ ኢይትዓወቆ፡ ቅሥፈቱ።
An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
17:12
פָּג֬וֹשׁ דֹּ֣ב שַׁכּ֣וּל בְּאִ֑ישׁ וְאַל־כְּ֝סִ֗יל בְּאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃
ἐμπεσεῖται μέριμνα ἀνδρὶ νοήμονι οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες διαλογιοῦνται κακά
Expedit magis ursae occurrere raptis foetibus, quam fatuo confidenti in stultitia sua.
ቅስተ፡ ያነሥእ፡ ኵሉ፡ እኩይ፡ ወእግዚአብሔር፡ ይፌኑ፡ መልአኮ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ምሕረት፡ ቦቱ።
Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
17:13
מֵשִׁ֣יב רָ֭עָה תַּ֣חַת טוֹבָ֑ה לֹא־[תָמ֥וּשׁ] (תמיש) רָ֝עָ֗ה מִבֵּיתֽוֹ׃
ὃς ἀποδίδωσιν κακὰ ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν οὐ κινηθήσεται κακὰ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ
Qui reddit mala pro bonis, non recedet malum de domo ejus.
ይወድቅ፡ ብእሲ፡ ማእምር፡ ውስተ፡ ትካዝ፡ ወዐብዳንሰ፡ ይሔልዩ፡ እኩየ።
Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
17:14
פּ֣וֹטֵֽר מַ֭יִם רֵאשִׁ֣ית מָד֑וֹן וְלִפְנֵ֥י הִ֝תְגַּלַּ֗ע הָרִ֥יב נְטֽוֹשׁ׃
ἐξουσίαν δίδωσιν λόγοις ἀρχὴ δικαιοσύνης προηγεῖται δὲ τῆς ἐνδείας στάσις καὶ μάχη
Qui dimittit aquam caput est jurgiorum, et antequam patiatur contumeliam judicium deserit.
ዘየዓሢ፡ እኩየ፡ ህየንተ፡ ሠናይ፡ ኢያንቀለቅል፡ እኩይ፡ እምነ፡ ቤቱ።
The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.
17:15
מַצְדִּ֣יק רָ֭שָׁע וּמַרְשִׁ֣יעַ צַדִּ֑יק תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה גַּם־שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃
ὃς δίκαιον κρίνει τὸν ἄδικον ἄδικον δὲ τὸν δίκαιον ἀκάθαρτος καὶ βδελυκτὸς παρὰ θεῷ
Qui justificat impium, et qui condemnat justum, abominabilis est uterque apud Deum.
ዐፂወ፡ ማይ፡ ቀዳሜ፡ ጽልእ፡ ወመኰንና፡ ለንዴት፡ ጋእዝ፡ ወባእስ፡ ሥልጣነ፡ ነገር፡ ይሁብ፡ ቀዳሜ፡ ጽድቅ።
He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.
17:16
לָמָּה־זֶּ֣ה מְחִ֣יר בְּיַד־כְּסִ֑יל לִקְנ֖וֹת חׇכְמָ֣ה וְלֶב־אָֽיִן׃
ἵνα τί ὑπῆρξεν χρήματα ἄφρονι κτήσασθαι γὰρ σοφίαν ἀκάρδιος οὐ δυνήσεται ὃς ὑψηλὸν ποιεῖ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ οἶκον ζητεῖ συντριβήν ὁ δὲ σκολιάζων τοῦ μαθεῖν ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά
Quid prodest stulto habere divitias, cum sapientiam emere non possit ? Qui altum facit domum suam quaerit ruinam, et qui evitat discere incidet in mala.
ዘከመ፡ ጻድቅ፡ ይኰንኖ፡ ለኃጥእ፡ ወዘከመ፡ ኃጥእ፡ ለጻድቅ፡ ርኩስ፡ ምኑን፡ በኀበ፡ እግዚአብሔር።
Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?
17:17
בְּכׇל־עֵ֭ת אֹהֵ֣ב הָרֵ֑עַ וְאָ֥ח לְ֝צָרָ֗ה יִוָּלֵֽד׃
εἰς πάντα καιρὸν φίλος ὑπαρχέτω σοι ἀδελφοὶ δὲ ἐν ἀνάγκαις χρήσιμοι ἔστωσαν τούτου γὰρ χάριν γεννῶνται
Omni tempore diligit qui amicus est, et frater in angustiis comprobatur.
ለምንት፡ ጥሪት፡ ለዐብድ፡ አጥርዮታ፡ ለጥበብ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ልብ፡ ኢይትከሀል።
A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.
17:18
אָדָ֣ם חֲסַר־לֵ֭ב תּוֹקֵ֣עַ כָּ֑ף עֹרֵ֥ב עֲ֝רֻבָּ֗ה לִפְנֵ֥י רֵעֵֽהוּ׃
ἀνὴρ ἄφρων ἐπικροτεῖ καὶ ἐπιχαίρει ἑαυτῷ ὡς καὶ ὁ ἐγγυώμενος ἐγγύῃ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ φίλον
Stultus homo plaudet manibus, cum spoponderit pro amico suo.
ዘያነውኅ፡ ቤቶ፡ የኃሥሥ፡ ቅጥቃጤ፡ ለርእሱ፡ ወዘያስተዓፅብ፡ ለተምህሮ፡ ይወድቅ፡ ውስተ፡ አኪት።
A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.
17:19
אֹ֣הֵֽב פֶּ֭שַׁע אֹהֵ֣ב מַצָּ֑ה מַגְבִּ֥יהַּ פִּ֝תְח֗וֹ מְבַקֶּשׁ־שָֽׁבֶר׃
φιλαμαρτήμων χαίρει μάχαις
Qui meditatur discordias diligit rixas, et qui exaltat ostium quaerit ruinam.
በኵሉ፡ ጊዜ፡ አጥሪ፡ ዓርከ፡ ወአኃወ፡ በምንዳቤ፡ በቋፅያነ፡ ይከውኑ፡ እስመ፡ በእንተዝ፡ ይትወለዱ።
He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.
17:20
עִקֶּשׁ־לֵ֭ב לֹ֣א יִמְצָא־ט֑וֹב וְנֶהְפָּ֥ךְ בִּ֝לְשׁוֹנ֗וֹ יִפּ֥וֹל בְּרָעָֽה׃
ὁ δὲ σκληροκάρδιος οὐ συναντᾷ ἀγαθοῖς ἀνὴρ εὐμετάβολος γλώσσῃ ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά
Qui perversi cordis est non inveniet bonum, et qui vertit linguam incidet in malum.
ብእሲ፡ ዓብድ፡ ይጠፍሕ፡ እዴሁ፡ ወይትኀሠይ፡ በርእሱ፡ ከመ፡ ዘይትሀበይ፡ ህቢተ፡ ለዐርኩ።
One who has a perverse heart doesn’t find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.
17:21
יֹלֵ֣ד כְּ֭סִיל לְת֣וּגָה ל֑וֹ וְלֹא־יִ֝שְׂמַ֗ח אֲבִ֣י נָבָֽל׃
καρδία δὲ ἄφρονος ὀδύνη τῷ κεκτημένῳ αὐτήν οὐκ εὐφραίνεται πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ ἀπαιδεύτῳ υἱὸς δὲ φρόνιμος εὐφραίνει μητέρα αὐτοῦ
Natus est stultus in ignominiam suam ; sed nec pater in fatuo laetabitur.
መፍቀሬ፡ ጋእዝ፡ ይትፌሣሕ፡ በባእስ፡ ወጽኑዐ፡ ልብሰ፡ ኢይዳደቅ፡ ሠናየ።
He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.
17:22
לֵ֣ב שָׂ֭מֵחַ יֵיטִ֣יב גֵּהָ֑ה וְר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה תְּיַבֶּשׁ־גָּֽרֶם׃
καρδία εὐφραινομένη εὐεκτεῖν ποιεῖ ἀνδρὸς δὲ λυπηροῦ ξηραίνεται τὰ ὀστᾶ
Animus gaudens aetatem floridam facit ; spiritus tristis exsiccat ossa.
ብእሲ፡ መያጤ፡ ልሳን፡ ይወድቅ፡ ውስተ፡ እኪት፡ ወልበ፡ ዐብድሰ፡ ኃዘን፡ ለዘአጥረያ።
A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
17:23
שֹׁ֣חַד מֵ֭חֵק רָשָׁ֣ע יִקָּ֑ח לְ֝הַטּ֗וֹת אׇרְח֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃
λαμβάνοντος δῶρα ἐν κόλπῳ ἀδίκως οὐ κατευοδοῦνται ὁδοί ἀσεβὴς δὲ ἐκκλίνει ὁδοὺς δικαιοσύνης
Munera de sinu impius accipit, ut pervertat semitas judicii.
ኢይትፌሣሕ፡ አብ፡ በወልድ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ትምህርት፡ ወልድ፡ ጠቢብ፡ ያስተፌሥሕ፡ እሞ።
A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.
17:24
אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י מֵבִ֣ין חׇכְמָ֑ה וְעֵינֵ֥י כְ֝סִ֗יל בִּקְצֵה־אָֽרֶץ׃
πρόσωπον συνετὸν ἀνδρὸς σοφοῦ οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ ἄφρονος ἐπ’ ἄκρα γῆς
In facie prudentis lucet sapientia ; oculi stultorum in finibus terrae.
ልብ፡ ፍሥሕት፡ ሠናየ፡ ትገብር፡ ብእሲ፡ ኃዛኒ፡ ያየብስ፡ አዕፅምቲሁ።
Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.
17:25
כַּ֣עַס לְ֭אָבִיו בֵּ֣ן כְּסִ֑יל וּ֝מֶ֗מֶר לְיֽוֹלַדְתּֽוֹ׃
ὀργὴ πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων καὶ ὀδύνη τῇ τεκούσῃ αὐτοῦ
Ira patris filius stultus, et dolor matris quae genuit eum.
ዘይነሥእ፡ ሕልያነ፡ ውስተ፡ ኅፅኑ፡ በዓመፃ፡ ኢያረትዕ፡ ፍትሐ፡ ወረሲዕሰ፡ ይትገኀሥ፡ እምፍናወ፡ ጻድቃን።
A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.
17:26
גַּ֤ם עֲנ֣וֹשׁ לַצַּדִּ֣יק לֹא־ט֑וֹב לְהַכּ֖וֹת נְדִיבִ֣ים עַל־יֹֽשֶׁר׃
ζημιοῦν ἄνδρα δίκαιον οὐ καλόν οὐδὲ ὅσιον ἐπιβουλεύειν δυνάσταις δικαίοις
Non est bonum damnum inferre justo, nec percutere principem qui recta judicat.
ገጹ፡ ማእምር፡ ለብእሲ፡ ጠቢብ፡ ወአዕይንቲሁ፡ ለዓብድ፡ ውስተ፡ ከተማ፡ ምድር፡ አዕይንቲሁሰ፡ ለጠቢብ፡ ዲበ፡ ርእሱ።
Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.
17:27
חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ אֲ֭מָרָיו יוֹדֵ֣עַ דָּ֑עַת (וקר) [יְקַר־]ר֝֗וּחַ אִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה׃
ὃς φείδεται ῥῆμα προέσθαι σκληρόν ἐπιγνώμων μακρόθυμος δὲ ἀνὴρ φρόνιμος
Qui moderatur sermones suos doctus et prudens est, et pretiosi spiritus vir eruditus.
መዓት፡ ለአብ፡ ዐብድ፡ ውሉድ፡ ወኃዘን፡ ለእንተ፡ ወለደቶ።
He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.
17:28
גַּ֤ם אֱוִ֣יל מַ֭חֲרִישׁ חָכָ֣ם יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב אֹטֵ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֣יו נָבֽוֹן׃
ἀνοήτῳ ἐπερωτήσαντι σοφίαν σοφία λογισθήσεται ἐνεὸν δέ τις ἑαυτὸν ποιήσας δόξει φρόνιμος εἶναι
Stultus quoque, si tacuerit, sapiens reputabitur, et si compresserit labia sua, intelligens.
አኅሥሮቱ፡ ለጻድቅ፡ ብእሲ፡ አኮ፡ ሠናይ፡ ወአኮ፡ ሠናይ፡ ለመኳንንተ፡ ጽድቅ፡ ሐቢል።
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
17:29———
ዘይምህክ፡ አውፅኦ፡ ቃለ፡ ንቁጸ፡ ማእምር፡ ውእቱ፡ ወመስተዓግሥ፡ ብእሲ፡ ጠቢብ።
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
17:30———
ዓብድ፡ ለእመ፡ ተሰአለ፡ ጥበበ፡ ይከውኖ፡ በአርምሞሰ፡ ወበተሐክሞ፡ ይመስል፡ ጠቢበ።
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
