17:1
ט֤וֹב פַּ֣ת חֲ֭רֵבָה וְשַׁלְוָה־בָ֑הּ מִ֝בַּ֗יִת מָלֵ֥א זִבְחֵי־רִֽיב׃
Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.
設筵滿屋,大家相爭, 不如有塊乾餅,大家相安。
17:2
עֶֽבֶד־מַשְׂכִּ֗יל יִ֭מְשֹׁל בְּבֵ֣ן מֵבִ֑ישׁ וּבְת֥וֹךְ אַ֝חִ֗ים יַחֲלֹ֥ק נַחֲלָֽה׃
A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.
僕人辦事聰明,必管轄貽羞之子, 又在眾子中同分產業。
17:3
מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וּבֹחֵ֖ן לִבּ֣וֹת יְהֹוָֽה׃
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but Yahweh tests the hearts.
鼎為煉銀,爐為煉金; 惟有耶和華熬煉人心。
17:4
מֵ֭רַע מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל־שְׂפַת־אָ֑וֶן שֶׁ֥קֶר מֵ֝זִ֗ין עַל־לְשׁ֥וֹן הַוֺּֽת׃
An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
行惡的,留心聽奸詐之言; 說謊的,側耳聽邪惡之語。
17:5
לֹעֵ֣ג לָ֭רָשׁ חֵרֵ֣ף עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ שָׂמֵ֥חַ לְ֝אֵ֗יד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה׃
Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
戲笑窮人的,是辱沒造他的主; 幸災樂禍的,必不免受罰。
17:6
עֲטֶ֣רֶת זְ֭קֵנִים בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת בָּנִ֣ים אֲבוֹתָֽם׃
Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children is their parents.
子孫為老人的冠冕; 父親是兒女的榮耀。
17:7
לֹא־נָאוָ֣ה לְנָבָ֣ל שְׂפַת־יֶ֑תֶר אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־לְנָדִ֥יב שְׂפַת־שָֽׁקֶר׃
Excellent speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.
愚頑人說美言本不相宜, 何況君王說謊話呢?
17:8
אֶבֶן־חֵ֣ן הַ֭שֹּׁחַד בְּעֵינֵ֣י בְעָלָ֑יו אֶֽל־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֖ר יִפְנֶ֣ה יַשְׂכִּֽיל׃
A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.
賄賂在餽送的人眼中看為寶玉, 隨處運動都得順利。
17:9
מְֽכַסֶּה־פֶּ֭שַׁע מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אַהֲבָ֑ה וְשֹׁנֶ֥ה בְ֝דָבָ֗ר מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף׃
He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.
遮掩人過的,尋求人愛; 屢次挑錯的,離間密友。
17:10
תֵּ֣חַת גְּעָרָ֣ה בְמֵבִ֑ין מֵהַכּ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל מֵאָֽה׃
A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.
一句責備話深入聰明人的心, 強如責打愚昧人一百下。
17:11
אַךְ־מְרִ֥י יְבַקֶּשׁ־רָ֑ע וּמַלְאָ֥ךְ אַ֝כְזָרִ֗י יְשֻׁלַּח־בּֽוֹ׃
An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
惡人只尋背叛, 所以必有嚴厲的使者奉差攻擊他。
17:12
פָּג֬וֹשׁ דֹּ֣ב שַׁכּ֣וּל בְּאִ֑ישׁ וְאַל־כְּ֝סִ֗יל בְּאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃
Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
寧可遇見丟崽子的母熊, 不可遇見正行愚妄的愚昧人。
17:13
מֵשִׁ֣יב רָ֭עָה תַּ֣חַת טוֹבָ֑ה לֹא־[תָמ֥וּשׁ] (תמיש) רָ֝עָ֗ה מִבֵּיתֽוֹ׃
Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
以惡報善的, 禍患必不離他的家。
17:14
פּ֣וֹטֵֽר מַ֭יִם רֵאשִׁ֣ית מָד֑וֹן וְלִפְנֵ֥י הִ֝תְגַּלַּ֗ע הָרִ֥יב נְטֽוֹשׁ׃
The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.
紛爭的起頭如水放開, 所以,在爭鬧之先必當止息爭競。
17:15
מַצְדִּ֣יק רָ֭שָׁע וּמַרְשִׁ֣יעַ צַדִּ֑יק תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה גַּם־שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃
He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.
定惡人為義的,定義人為惡的, 這都為耶和華所憎惡。
17:16
לָמָּה־זֶּ֣ה מְחִ֣יר בְּיַד־כְּסִ֑יל לִקְנ֖וֹת חׇכְמָ֣ה וְלֶב־אָֽיִן׃
Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?
愚昧人既無聰明, 為何手拿價銀買智慧呢?
17:17
בְּכׇל־עֵ֭ת אֹהֵ֣ב הָרֵ֑עַ וְאָ֥ח לְ֝צָרָ֗ה יִוָּלֵֽד׃
A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.
朋友乃時常親愛, 弟兄為患難而生。
17:18
אָדָ֣ם חֲסַר־לֵ֭ב תּוֹקֵ֣עַ כָּ֑ף עֹרֵ֥ב עֲ֝רֻבָּ֗ה לִפְנֵ֥י רֵעֵֽהוּ׃
A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.
在鄰舍面前擊掌作保 乃是無知的人。
17:19
אֹ֣הֵֽב פֶּ֭שַׁע אֹהֵ֣ב מַצָּ֑ה מַגְבִּ֥יהַּ פִּ֝תְח֗וֹ מְבַקֶּשׁ־שָֽׁבֶר׃
He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.
喜愛爭競的,是喜愛過犯; 高立家門的,乃自取敗壞。
17:20
עִקֶּשׁ־לֵ֭ב לֹ֣א יִמְצָא־ט֑וֹב וְנֶהְפָּ֥ךְ בִּ֝לְשׁוֹנ֗וֹ יִפּ֥וֹל בְּרָעָֽה׃
One who has a perverse heart doesn’t find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.
心存邪僻的,尋不着好處; 舌弄是非的,陷在禍患中。
17:21
יֹלֵ֣ד כְּ֭סִיל לְת֣וּגָה ל֑וֹ וְלֹא־יִ֝שְׂמַ֗ח אֲבִ֣י נָבָֽל׃
He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.
生愚昧子的,必自愁苦; 愚頑人的父毫無喜樂。
17:22
לֵ֣ב שָׂ֭מֵחַ יֵיטִ֣יב גֵּהָ֑ה וְר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה תְּיַבֶּשׁ־גָּֽרֶם׃
A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
喜樂的心乃是良藥; 憂傷的靈使骨枯乾。
17:23
שֹׁ֣חַד מֵ֭חֵק רָשָׁ֣ע יִקָּ֑ח לְ֝הַטּ֗וֹת אׇרְח֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃
A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.
惡人暗中受賄賂, 為要顛倒判斷。
17:24
אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י מֵבִ֣ין חׇכְמָ֑ה וְעֵינֵ֥י כְ֝סִ֗יל בִּקְצֵה־אָֽרֶץ׃
Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.
明哲人眼前有智慧; 愚昧人眼望地極。
17:25
כַּ֣עַס לְ֭אָבִיו בֵּ֣ן כְּסִ֑יל וּ֝מֶ֗מֶר לְיֽוֹלַדְתּֽוֹ׃
A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.
愚昧子使父親愁煩, 使母親憂苦。
17:26
גַּ֤ם עֲנ֣וֹשׁ לַצַּדִּ֣יק לֹא־ט֑וֹב לְהַכּ֖וֹת נְדִיבִ֣ים עַל־יֹֽשֶׁר׃
Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.
刑罰義人為不善; 責打君子為不義。
17:27
חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ אֲ֭מָרָיו יוֹדֵ֣עַ דָּ֑עַת (וקר) [יְקַר־]ר֝֗וּחַ אִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה׃
He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.
寡少言語的,有知識; 性情溫良的,有聰明。
17:28
גַּ֤ם אֱוִ֣יל מַ֭חֲרִישׁ חָכָ֣ם יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב אֹטֵ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֣יו נָבֽוֹן׃
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
愚昧人若靜默不言也可算為智慧; 閉口不說也可算為聰明。
