6:1
And a reading from Isaiah:
Be renewed toward Me, you islands.
Israel is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation;
以色列必蒙耶和華的拯救,得永遠的救恩;
6:4
they shall not be ashamed, neither shall they be confounded for ever and ever, and so forth.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ;
願我們主耶穌基督的神與父,是當受稱頌的;
6:6
[blessed also be His only-begotten Son.]
For as soon as God is conceived, let Father also be conceived;
因為一思想到「神」,就當同時思想到「父」;
6:8
that the glorification of Father and Son together with the Holy Spirit may be accomplished undivided.
For the Father has not one glory and the Son another;
因為父並非有一種榮耀,子另有一種榮耀;
6:10
but one and the same [with the Holy Spirit].
Since the Son is the only-begotten of the Father, and when the Father is glorified the Son also shares in the glory;
因為子是父的獨生子,父得榮耀時,子也一同享受那榮耀;
6:12
since the glory of the Son comes from the honor of His Father;
因為子的榮耀出於祂父的尊榮;
6:13
and again, when the Son is glorified, the Father of so good a Son is greatly honored.
And the mind indeed conceives most swiftly;
心思固然領會得極其迅速;
6:15
but the tongue has need of words, and of much explanation of the intervening discourse.
For the eye at once embraces a great chorus of stars;
因為眼睛一下就能將眾星的大群盡收眼底;
6:17
but when one wishes to relate each in detail—what is the morning star, what is the evening star, what is each individual one—he has need of many words.
Again likewise, the mind in the swiftest moment embraces land and sea and all the ends of the world;
照樣,心思在極短的一瞬間,便能將陸地、海洋並世界的各端都包羅進來;
6:19
but what it conceives in an instant, this it relates in many words.
Great, then, is the example just spoken;
因此,方才所說的比喻固然是大的;
6:21
but it is still weak and feeble.
For we speak not what we ought concerning God (for these things are known to Him alone), but what human nature has admitted, and what our weakness is able to bear.
For we do not expound what God is;
因為我們並不闡明神是甚麼;
6:24
but we confess with thankfulness that we do not know the exact truth concerning Him.
For in matters concerning God it is great knowledge to confess one's ignorance.
Magnify, therefore, the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together, all of us in common;
所以,你們要同我尊耶和華為大,我們眾人要一同高舉祂的名;
6:27
or rather, even if we are all gathered together, we shall not yet do as we ought.
I do not say only you who are present, but even if all the flocks of the whole universal Church, both that which now is and that which is to come, should come together, they will not be able to praise the Shepherd worthily.
Great was Abraham and honorable;
亞伯拉罕是偉大而尊貴的;
6:30
but great in relation to men.
Yet when he came before God, then, truthfully owning it with thankfulness, he says, I am earth and ashes.
He did not say earth and then keep silent, lest he should name himself the great element;
他沒有說「塵土」就住口,免得他用那偉大的元素來稱呼自己;
6:33
but he added, and ashes, that he might set forth his easily dissolved and crumbling nature.
Is there anything, he says, smaller or finer than ashes? For take, he says, the comparison of ashes to a house, and of a house to a city, and of a city to a province, and of a province to the country of the Romans, and of the country of the Romans to the whole earth and all its ends; and of the whole earth to the heaven that enfolds it;
他說,有甚麼比爐灰更小更微細的麼?他說,你試將爐灰與一所房屋相比,房屋與一座城相比,城與一個省相比,省與羅馬人的國土相比,羅馬人的國土與全地並各端相比,再將全地與那懷抱它的諸天相比;
6:35
which earth bears to heaven such a comparison as the center bears to the whole circumference of the wheel (for such is the comparison of earth to heaven); and conceive this first visible heaven to be smaller than the second, and the second than the third;
這地與諸天相比,正如車輪的中心點與整個圓周相比(因為地與天的比例正是如此);你當思想這頭一層可見的天比第二層小,第二層又比第三層小;
6:36
[for up to these the Scripture has named;
[因為聖經只題名到這幾層;
6:37
not that these alone exist, but that it was profitable for us to know only so many]; and when you have beheld with the mind all the heavens, not even the heavens will be able to praise God as He is;
並非只有這幾層存在,乃是叫我們只知道這幾層對我們有益];及至你用心思看遍諸天,連諸天也不能照著神的本相讚美祂;
6:38
not even if they should sound louder than thunder.
But if such vast vaults of the heavens cannot praise God worthily;
但若諸天那如此廣大的穹蒼尚且不能照所配得的讚美神;
6:40
when then shall earth and ashes, the smallest and least of all things that are, be able to send up a worthy hymn of God—[or to speak worthily concerning God]—who holds the circle of the earth, and has its inhabitants as locusts? If anyone undertakes to speak the things concerning God, let him first describe the ends of the earth.
You inhabit the earth, and you do not know the limit of your own dwelling, the earth;
你住在地上,連你自己的居所——地——的盡頭都不曉得;
6:42
and how shall you be able worthily to conceive of the Maker? You behold the stars, but you do not behold their Maker.
Number first the visible, and then describe the invisible One;
你先數算那看得見的,然後再講說那看不見的;
6:44
Him who numbers the multitudes of the stars, and calls them all by their names.
Drops of more violent rains that lately came down well-nigh destroyed us.
Number the raindrops of this one city alone;
你單數算這一座城的雨點罷;
6:47
and I say not of the city, but number the drops upon your own house in a single hour, if you are able;
我且不說一座城,你若能夠,單數算一個時辰之內落在你自己房上的雨點罷;
6:48
but being unable, you recognize your own weakness.
From this learn the power of God;
你要從這事認識神的大能;
6:50
for to Him the drops of rain too are numbered, those poured out over all the inhabited world, not only now, but always.
The sun is a work of God, great indeed;
太陽是神的工作,固然是大的;
6:52
but very small in comparison with the whole heaven.
Gaze first upon the sun, and then busy yourself about the Master.
Seek not things too deep for you, nor search out things too strong for you;
比你太深的事,你不要尋求;比你太強的事,你不要查考;
6:55
the things which are commanded you, these consider.
But someone will say: If the divine subsistence is incomprehensible, why then do you discourse about these things? So then, because I am unable to drink the whole river, shall I not take even what is profitable for me in due measure? Because I cannot, with the capacity of my eyes, contain the whole sun, shall I not look upon even so much as suffices for my own need? Or, because I have entered into a vast paradise, and cannot eat all the substance of the orchard, do you wish me to go out entirely hungry? I praise and glorify Him who made us;
但有人要說:神聖的本體若是不可測度的,那你為甚麼還講論這些事呢?難道因我不能把整條河喝盡,我就連那對我有益、合乎我度量的也不取麼?難道因我眼睛的容量不能容下整個太陽,我就連那足夠我自己需用的也不看麼?或者因我進了一座極大的樂園,不能把園中所有果樹的果子都吃盡,你就要我空著肚子完全離去麼?我讚美、榮耀那造我們的;
6:57
for it is a divine command that says:
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
I undertake now to glorify the Master, but not to expound Him, knowing well indeed that I shall fall short of the worthiness of glorifying Him, yet counting it a work of piety even to make the attempt at all.
For the Lord Jesus comforts my weakness, saying, No man has seen God at any time.
What then? someone will say, is it not written that the angels of the little ones do always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven? But the angels behold, not as God is, but in so far as they themselves are capable.
For Jesus Himself is the One who says, Not that anyone has seen the Father, save He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
they are capable, and archangels according to their power;
他們有這容量,天使長也照著他們的能力如此;
6:64
but Thrones and Dominions, more than the former, yet less than His worthiness.
And only the Holy Spirit, together with the Son, is able to behold as is fitting.
For That searches all things, [and knows] even the depths of God;
因為那靈參透萬事,[並知道]連神深奧的事;
6:67
even as the only-begotten Son also knows the Father as is fitting, together with the Holy Spirit.
For no one knows the Father, He says, save the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal Him.
For He sees as is fitting, and reveals God through the Spirit, in so far as each is capable;
因為祂照所當的看見,並藉著聖靈,按各人所能領受的程度,將神啟示出來;
6:70
since the only-begotten Son is also partaker of the Father's Godhead together with the Holy Spirit.
He who was begotten [impassibly before the eternal ages] knows the One who begot, and the One who begot knows the One who was begotten.
Since therefore the angels are ignorant (for the only-begotten, together with the Holy Spirit, reveals to each according to his own capacity, as we have said), let no man be ashamed to confess his ignorance.
I am speaking now, I and all in turn;
我如今說話,我和眾人都按次序說話;
6:74
but how we speak, we are unable to tell.
How then can I describe Him who gave the power of speech? I who have a soul, and cannot describe its characters, how shall I be able to tell forth the Giver of the soul? This alone will suffice us unto piety, to know that we have a God;
那麼,我怎能講說那賜人說話之能的呢?我自己有靈魂,尚且不能描述它的諸般特性,怎能說明那賜靈魂的呢?單單這一件,就足夠我們敬虔的:就是知道我們有一位神;
6:76
one God, a God who is, who is ever;
獨一的神,一位存在的神,永遠常存的神;
6:77
of whom there is no other Father;
祂沒有別的父;
6:78
than whom none is stronger, whom no successor casts out of His kingdom;
沒有比祂更強的,也沒有接續者把祂逐出祂的國;
6:79
the One of many names, almighty, and of single form in His subsistence.
For it is not that, because He is called good and just and almighty and Sabaoth, He is on that account different and varied;
因為祂雖被稱為良善的、公義的、全能的、萬軍之耶和華,並不因此就成了不同或駁雜的;
6:81
but being one and the same, He sends forth countless energies of His Godhead.
Not having more in one part, and being diminished in another part;
祂不是在這一面多有,在那一面減少;
6:83
but in all things being like to Himself.
Not great in loving-kindness only and small in wisdom;
祂不是單在慈愛上偉大,在智慧上微小;
6:85
but having wisdom and loving-kindness equal in power.
Not seeing in one part, and in another part deprived of seeing;
祂不是在這一面看見,在那一面被奪去看見;
6:87
but being all eye and all hearing and all mind.
Not, as we, understanding in part and in part not knowing;
祂不像我們,一面領會,一面又不知道;
6:89
for blasphemous is such a saying, and unworthy of the divine subsistence.
He is foreknower of the things that are, and holy, and almighty, and better than all, and greater than all, and wiser than all;
祂是萬有的先知者,是聖潔的、全能的,比萬有更美善、比萬有更大、比萬有更有智慧;
6:91
of whom we shall be able to declare neither [beginning] nor form nor figure.
For you have never at any time heard His voice, nor have you seen His form, says the Scripture.
Wherefore also Moses says to the Israelites, And take good heed to your souls, for you saw no likeness.
For if it is altogether impossible to imagine the likeness, will the mind then be near to the subsistence? Many have imagined many things, and all have failed.
And some supposed God to be fire;
有些人以為神是火;
6:96
others winged like a man, because it is rightly written, but wrongly conceived, In the shelter of your wings you shall shelter me.
They forgot our Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten, who likewise says concerning Himself also, to Jerusalem, How often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not? For His protecting power being taken as wings, these men, not understanding, fell down into human notions, and conceived in a human way of Him who is past tracing out.
And others dared to say that He has seven eyes, because it is written, The seven eyes of the Lord that look upon all the earth.
For if He has only seven eyes set about Him in part, then His seeing is partial, and not complete;
因為祂若只有局部安設的七隻眼,那麼祂的看見就是局部的,而非完全的;
6:100
which to say [of God] is profane.
For we must believe God to be perfect in all things, according to the Savior's word which says, Your heavenly Father is perfect.
Perfect in seeing, perfect in power, perfect in greatness, perfect in foreknowledge, perfect in goodness, perfect in righteousness, perfect in loving-kindness toward mankind.
Not bounded by place, but the Maker of places;
祂不被處所所限,乃是諸般處所的創造者;
6:104
being in all, and circumscribed by none.
Heaven is His throne, but He who sits upon it is higher still;
天是祂的寶座,但那坐在其上的,比這更高;
6:106
the earth is His footstool, but His power reaches even to the regions beneath the earth.
He is One, present everywhere, seeing all things, perceiving all things, forming all things through Christ.
[For all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.] The greatest and inexhaustible fountain of every good, a river of beneficence, light eternal, shining forth without ceasing, power invincible, condescending to our weaknesses;
[萬物是藉著祂造的;凡被造的,沒有一樣不是藉著祂造的。]祂是一切美善之最大而不竭的泉源,是恩惠的江河,是永恆的光,不止息地照耀,是不能被勝過的能力,俯就[我們]的軟弱;
6:109
of whom we cannot even bear to hear the name.
Will you find out the trace of the Lord, says Job, or have you reached the uttermost things which the Almighty has made? If the uttermost of the works is not comprehended, shall He who made all things be comprehended? Eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
If the things which God has prepared are beyond the grasp of our minds, can we then comprehend with the mind Him who prepared them? O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out, says the Apostle.
If His judgments and His ways are incomprehensible, shall He Himself be comprehended? Seeing then that God is so great, and yet greater still (for not even if I should turn my whole being into a tongue could I speak worthily of Him;
祂的判斷和祂的道路若是不可測度的,祂自己豈能被測透麼?既然神是如此偉大,且更為偉大(因為縱使我把我整個的人都化作舌頭,也不能配得地說論祂;
6:114
rather, not even if all the angels should come together, will they yet speak worthily);
甚或眾天使都聚集了,也仍不能配得地說論祂);
6:115
God being then so good and so great, a man, having carved a stone, said to the stone, You are my God.
O the great blindness, that has come down from such greatness to such baseness!
The tree which God planted, and the rain made to grow, and which afterward, being burned up and becoming glowing ashes, this is proclaimed God;
那神所栽種、雨水所長大的樹,後來被火焚燒、化為熾熱的爐灰,這卻被宣稱為神;
6:118
but the true God is despised.
And the wickedness of idolatry was poured out abundantly;
偶像崇拜的惡事氾濫無度;
6:120
and cat and wolf and dog were worshiped instead of God, and a man-eating lion was worshiped instead of God who most loves mankind.
Serpent and dragon, counterfeits of him who cast us out of paradise, were worshiped;
蛇與龍,就是那把我們逐出樂園者的仿冒,竟被敬拜;
6:122
and He who planted paradise was despised.
I am ashamed to say it, yet I say it:
for onions too have already been worshiped among certain peoples.
Wine was given to gladden the heart of man;
酒是賜下來叫人心歡暢的;
6:126
and Dionysus was worshiped instead of God.
God made grain by saying, Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass, sowing seed after its kind [and after its likeness], that bread might sustain the heart of man;
神造了五穀,藉著說:地要發生青草和結種子的菜蔬,各從其類[各按其樣],好叫食物能堅固人心;
6:128
and whence then was Demeter worshiped? Fire comes forth from the striking together of stones, even to this day;
那麼,得墨忒耳又怎會被敬拜呢?直到今日,火仍是從石頭相擊中迸發出來的;
6:129
and whence then Hephaestus, the maker of fire? Whence the polytheistic error of the Greeks? God is incorporeal;
那麼,造火的赫淮斯托斯又從何而來呢?希臘人那多神的謬妄又從何而來呢?神是無形體的;
6:130
and whence then are adulteries charged against those who are called gods by them? I pass over in silence the changes of Zeus into a swan;
那麼,那些被他們稱為神的,又怎會被指控行姦淫呢?宙斯變為天鵝的事,我且默然不提;
6:131
I am ashamed to speak of his transformations into a bull; for the bellowings are unworthy of a god.
The god of the Greeks has been found to be an adulterer, and they are not ashamed.
For if he is an adulterer, let him not be called god.
And they tell of deaths and falls and thunderstrikes of the gods among them.
Do you see from what great height they have come down to where they are? Did then the Son of God come down from heaven in vain, or was it that He might heal so great a wound? Did the Son come in vain, or that the Father might be made known? You have recognized what moved the only-begotten to come down from the throne at the right hand.
The Father was being despised; the Son had to set right the error.
For He through whom all things were made had to offer all things to the Master of all.
The wound had to be healed;
那創傷必須得醫治;
6:139
for what was worse than this disease, that a stone should be worshiped instead of God? On Heresies.
And not only among the heathen did the devil contend for these things;
魔鬼不單在外邦人中間為這些事爭戰;
6:141
But indeed, even many of those falsely called Christians, who are wrongly named with the most fragrant name of Christ, have impiously dared to estrange God from His own works.
I mean the children of the heretics, those ill-named and utterly godless men, who pretend to be lovers of Christ but are altogether haters of Christ.
For he who blasphemes the Father of Christ is an enemy of the Son.
These men dared to say there are two deities, one good and one evil.
If it is deity, then it is altogether good as well;
若是神性,那就必然也是善的;
6:146
but if it is not good, why is it called deity? For if goodness belongs to God, if it befits God to be loving toward mankind, beneficent, and almighty,
[then] one of two things follows: either let them call it God together with the name and the operation; but if they intend to deprive it of these operations, let them not call it God by the mere appellation.
The heretics dared to speak of two gods, and two sources, of good and of evil, and to say that these are unbegotten.
If both are unbegotten, then surely they are also equal, and both mighty.
How then does darkness do away with light? And are they ever together, or are they kept apart? For together they cannot be.
"For what fellowship has light with darkness?" says the Apostle.
But if they are far apart from one another, then surely they also occupy their own places.
And if they occupy their own places, then we are certainly within the realm of the one God, and certainly we worship one God.
For it must be concluded thus, even if we were to go along with their folly: that one must worship one God.
Let us examine them, and consider what they say concerning the good God.
Is He able or unable? If He is able, how did evil come to be against His will? And how does the evil substance intrude when He does not will it? For if, knowing of it, He cannot prevent it, they charge Him with weakness;
祂是有能力的,還是無能力的?若祂是有能力的,惡怎能違背祂的旨意而生出?惡的本體怎能在祂不願意的時候侵入?因為若祂明知卻無力阻止,他們就是控告祂軟弱;
6:157
but if, being able, He does not prevent it, they charge Him with betrayal.
And behold their senselessness.
At one time they say that the Evil One has nothing in common with the good God in the creation of the world; at another time they say that he has only a fourth part.
And the Good One they say is the Father of Christ;
他們又說那善者乃是基督之父;
6:161
but Christ they call this sun.
If then, according to them, the world was made by the Evil One, and the sun is in the world, how is it that the Son of the Good One serves unwillingly among the things of the Evil One? We wallow in filth when we say these things—yet we say them so that none of those present may from ignorance fall into the mire of the heretics.
I know that I am defiling my own mouth and the ears of my hearers;
我知道我這樣說是玷污了自己的口,也玷污了聽者的耳;
6:164
for it is far better to hear the absurdities in the accusation of others, than from ignorance to fall into them.
It is far better for you to know the mire and to hate it, than in ignorance to fall into it.
The doctrine of the godlessness of the heresies is many-branched;
異端那不敬虔的教義是枝節繁多的;
6:167
for whenever one falls away from the single straight road, then he often plunges down into many precipices.
And the inventor of every heresy was Simon the magician.
That Simon in the Acts of the Apostles, who expected to buy with money the unpurchasable grace of the Spirit, and heard:
"You have neither part nor lot in this matter," and what follows.
"They went out from us, but they were not of us;"
"for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us."
This man, having come to Rome, after being cast out by the Apostles, and bringing with him a certain harlot named Helen, was the first who with his blasphemous mouth dared to say that he himself was the one who had appeared on Mount Sinai as the Father;
這人被使徒趕逐後來到羅馬,帶著一個名叫海倫的妓女,他第一個用褻瀆的口竟敢說:他自己就是那在西乃山上以父的身分顯現的那一位;
6:174
and that later, among the Jews, he had appeared not in flesh but in semblance, as Christ Jesus;
後來在猶太人中間,他並非以肉身、而是以幻象顯現,作為基督耶穌;
6:175
and that after this he appeared as the Holy Spirit, the one promised by Christ to be sent as the Paraclete.
And he so deceived the city of the Romans that Claudius set up a statue of him, inscribing in the Roman tongue, SIMONI DEO SANCTO, which being interpreted means, "To Simon the holy God."
But as the deception spread, a pair of good men corrected the error: Peter and Paul, the leaders of the Church, who came to the scene;
但當這迷惑蔓延時,有一對良善的人糾正了這錯誤,就是教會的領袖彼得和保羅,他們親臨其境;
6:178
and Simon, who was reputed to be God and was making his display, they straightway showed to be dead.
For when Simon promised to be lifted up into the heavens, and was being borne through the air on a chariot of demons, the servants of Christ bowed the knee and displayed that agreement of which Jesus spoke—"If two of you shall agree concerning anything that they ask, it shall be done for them"—
and sending forth the dart of concord through prayer against the magician, they cast him down to the earth.
And it is no marvel—though it is indeed a marvel;
這並不希奇——其實卻又是希奇的;
6:182
for it was Peter, who carries about the keys of the heavens.
For it was Paul, who was caught up to the third heaven and into paradise,
and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
[These men also] brought down from the air to the earth the reputed god, who was destined to be brought down to the regions beneath the earth.
This was the first dragon of wickedness;
這就是那邪惡的第一條龍;
6:187
but when one head was cut off, the matter of wickedness was again found to be many-headed.
For Cerinthus ravaged the Church, and Menander, and Carpocrates;
因為克林妥損害了教會,還有米南得和迦波克拉底;
6:189
and the Ebionites, and Marcion, the mouth of godlessness.
For he who proclaimed different gods, one the Good and another the Just, contradicts the Son who says, "Righteous Father."
And [he who says] again that the Father is one and the Maker of the world another, opposes the Son who says:
"If God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven [of fire],"
and, "Who makes His sun to rise on the good and the evil, and sends rain on the just and the unjust."
So again, the inventor of yet another wickedness was Marcion the second.
For being refuted by the testimonies laid down from the Old in the New Testament, he was the first who dared to cut out those testimonies, and to leave the proclaimed word of the faith without witness, having abandoned God;
因為他被新約中那些引自舊約的見證所駁倒,便第一個竟敢刪除那些見證,使所傳之信仰的道失去佐證,且離棄了神;
6:196
and, as though there were no heralds, he wished to make the faith of the Church unsound.
After him again came another, Basilides, ill-named, most dreadful in manner, a preacher of licentiousness.
Valentinus too contended in wickedness, the herald of thirty gods.
The Greeks speak of few gods; but this man, so called—or rather not really—a Christian, extended his error to a full thirty.
And he says that the Deep (it is fitting for him, being a deep of wickedness, to begin from a deep of teaching) begot Silence, and from Silence begot Word.
This man is worse than the Zeus of the Greeks, who lay with his sister;
這人比希臘人的宙斯還壞,那宙斯曾與自己的姊妹同寢;
6:202
for Silence was said to be the child of the Deep.
Do you see absurdity wrapped in the guise of Christianity? Wait a little while, and you will hate the impiety.
For he says that from this one there came eight aeons, and from those ten;
因為他說,從這一位生出八個世代(埃溫),又從那些生出十個;
6:205
and from those another twelve, male and female.
And whence the establishing of these? Behold the nonsense from his fabrications.
Whence do you have the proof of the thirty aeons? "Because," he says, "it is written that Jesus was baptized when about thirty years of age."
And what sort of proof is this from the thirty years, even if He was baptized at thirty? Then, because He also broke five loaves for five thousand, are there five gods? Or because He had twelve disciples, ought there to be only twelve gods? And this is still a small matter compared with the rest of the impiety.
For he says that the last of the gods, being male-female, as he dares to say, is this Wisdom.
For Christ is the Wisdom of God, the only-begotten Son;
其實基督乃是神的智慧,是獨生的子;
6:211
yet that man, by his teaching, dragged down Wisdom into a female and into the thirtieth element, the last fabrication.
And he says that Wisdom undertook to behold the first God;
他又說,智慧曾試圖要看見那首位的神;
6:213
and not enduring the dazzling rays, she fell out of the heavens and was cast forth from the thirtieth number.
Then groaning, out of her groans she begot the devil;
然後她哀歎,從她的哀歎中生出魔鬼;
6:215
and that, weeping over her fall, she gave subsistence to the sea.
Do you see the impiety? For how is the devil begotten from wisdom, and wickedness from understanding, or darkness from light? And he says that the devil begot others, who fashioned the world;
你看見這不敬虔麼?魔鬼怎能從智慧而生,邪惡怎能從聰明而出,黑暗怎能從光而來呢?他又說魔鬼生了別的,這些就造成了世界;
6:217
and that Christ came down to draw men away from the world-maker.
But hear whom they say Christ [Jesus] is, that you may hate them yet more greatly.
For they teach that when Wisdom fell, in order that the number of thirty might not be lacking, the twenty-nine aeons, each contributing some smallest portion, fashioned Christ;
因為他們教導說,智慧墜落後,為使三十之數不致缺少,那二十九個世代便各自獻出極微小的一份,造成了基督;
6:220
and this one too they again call male-female.
Is there anything more impious than these things? Is there anything more wretched than these? I am recounting to you the error, that you may hate them the more greatly.
Flee therefore the impiety, and do not even bid such a man Godspeed, lest you share in the unfruitful works of darkness;
所以你要逃避這不敬虔,連向這樣的人問安都不可,免得你與那暗昧無益的事有分;
6:223
and neither be inquisitive, nor wish to enter into discussion with them.
And hate indeed all heretics, but especially the man named for madness,
who first began in the time of the emperor Probus,
for the error is now a full seventy years old, and there are still men to this day who saw that man with their own eyes.
But hate him not because he lived a short time ago;
你恨惡他,並不是因為他是不久以前的人;
6:228
rather, hate the worker of wickedness on account of his impious doctrines—the receptacle of all filth, who took into himself the mire of every heresy.
For being ambitious to become preeminent in wickedness, taking the doctrines of all, and putting together one heresy filled with blasphemies and every lawlessness, he ravages the Church (or rather those outside the Church), walking about like a lion and devouring.
Do not give heed to their fair speech, nor to their pretended humility;
不要留意他們那花言巧語,也不要理會他們那假裝的謙卑;
6:231
for they are serpents, a brood of vipers.
Judas too said, "Hail, Rabbi," and was betraying Him.
Do not give heed to the kisses, but guard yourself against the venom.
And lest we seem to accuse him in vain, let us say in passing who this Manes is, and what he teaches in part;
免得我們顯為無故控告他,且讓我們順便說說這瑪尼是誰,並略述他所教導的一部分;
6:235
for not even the whole of eternity could worthily recount the entire mire of his teaching.
Let these things be remembered by you as timely help—things which were said also to those before you, and shall be said also to those now present;
願這些話成為你及時的幫助,存記在你心中——這些話也曾對在你以前的人說過,如今也要對在座的人說;
6:237
that those who are ignorant may learn, and those who know may be reminded.
Manes is not from the Christians—God forbid;
瑪尼並不是出於基督徒——斷乎不是;
6:239
nor was he cast out of the Church like Simon, neither he nor those who taught before him;
他也不像西門那樣是被趕出教會的,無論是他,還是在他以前施教的那些人;
6:240
for he is a thief of the evils of others, appropriating their wickedness to himself.
But how, and in what manner, must be heard.
There was a certain Scythianus in Egypt, a Saracen by race, having nothing in common either with Judaism or with Christianity.
This man, having settled in Alexandria and imitating the Aristotelian manner of life, composed four books: one called The Gospel, not containing the acts of Christ, but merely the title alone;
這人定居在亞歷山大,效法亞里斯多德式的生活,編寫了四卷書:一卷名為《福音》,內中並不含基督的事蹟,只徒有其名而已;
6:244
and another called The Chapters;
另一卷名為《章篇》;
6:245
and a third, The Mysteries;
第三卷名為《奧秘》;
6:246
and a fourth, which they now carry about, The Treasure.
And a disciple of his there was, named Terebinthus.
But the Lord, by smiting Scythianus—who had purposed to come into Judaea and ravage the country—with a deadly disease, put a stop to the pestilential design.
And the disciple of wickedness, Terebinthus, being heir to the gold and the books and the heresy, came into Palestine; and being recognized and condemned in Judaea, he resolved to remove into Persia.
And lest he be recognized there too by his name, he renamed himself Buddas.
But he had adversaries there also, the priests of Mithras;
但他在那裡也有對頭,就是密特拉的祭司們;
6:252
and many arguments being stirred up and much wrangling, he was refuted.
And at last, being hard pressed, he took refuge with a certain widow.
Then, going up onto the housetop and invoking the demons of the air—whom the Manichaeans to this day invoke over their abominable fig-cake—
being smitten of God and cast down from the housetop, he expired;
他被神擊打,從屋頂上摔下,斷了氣;
6:256
and thus the beast was cut off, the second one.
But the books that served as reminders of the impiety remained;
然而那些作為這不敬虔之記載的書卻存留了下來;
6:258
and the widow was heir both to the books and to the money.
And having neither relative nor any other person, she decided to buy with the money a boy called Cubricus;
她既沒有親屬,也沒有別的人,便決定用那筆錢買了一個名叫庫布里庫的男孩;
6:260
and taking him into adoption, she educated him in the learning of the Persians as a son, and sharpened him as an evil dart against humanity.
And Cubricus the evil servant flourished in the midst of the philosophers;
庫布里庫這惡僕在眾哲學家中間嶄露頭角;
6:262
and when the widow died, he inherited the money and the books.
Then, lest the name of Cubricus's servitude should be a reproach, instead of Cubricus he named himself Manes, which in the Persian dialect signifies "discourse."
For since he seemed to be a dialectician, he named himself Manes, as though a certain most excellent conversationalist.
But while he contrived for himself good repute in the Persian tongue,
the providence of God made him, even against his will, to become his own accuser;
神的安排卻使他即便違背己意,也成了控告自己的人;
6:267
so that, while thinking to honor himself in Persia, among the Greeks he proclaimed himself named for madness.
And he dared to say that he himself was the Paraclete.)
6:269
"But whosoever shall blaspheme against the Spirit
the Holy, has no forgiveness."
He therefore blasphemed, by calling himself the Holy Spirit.
Let him who has fellowship with those men consider with whom he ranks himself.
The servant shook the inhabited world, since by three things the earth is shaken;
這奴僕震動了普世,因為地是因三樣而震動的;
6:274
and the fourth it cannot bear, if a servant should become king.
And having come into the midst, he thereafter promised things beyond man.
The son of the king of the Persians was ill;
波斯王的兒子病了;
6:277
and an abundance of physicians was present.
But Manes promised that, like a pious man, he would set things right through prayer.
The physicians withdrew, and with them withdrew the life of the boy;
醫生們退去,那孩子的性命也隨之退去;
6:280
the impiety of the man was refuted.
And so the philosopher, as he was, was a prisoner, cast into prison—not because he had refuted the king concerning the truth;
於是這所謂的哲學家成了囚犯,被下在監裡——並不是因為他在真理的事上駁倒了王;
6:282
not because he had overthrown the idols, but because he had promised to save, and had lied;
也不是因為他推翻了偶像,乃是因為他應許要醫治,卻說了謊;
6:283
or rather, if the truth must be told, because he had committed murder.
For the one who could have been saved by careful medical attention, this man, by sending away the physicians, murdered, putting him to death by neglect.
And while I am telling of his very many evils, remember first the blasphemy;
當我述說他那極多的惡行時,你要首先記住那褻瀆;
6:286
not that servitude is a shame, but that for one who is a slave to fabricate freedom is an evil;
並非奴僕的身分是羞恥,乃是身為奴隸卻捏造自由,這才是惡;
6:287
third, the falsehood of the promise;
第三,那應許的虛謊;
6:288
and fourth, the murder of the boy;
第四,謀害那孩子;
6:289
and fifth, the shame of imprisonment.
And there was not only the shame of imprisonment, but also the flight out of prison.
For he who called himself the Paraclete and a champion of the truth—he fled.
He was no successor of Jesus, who readily went to the cross;
他絕非耶穌的繼承者,耶穌乃是甘心走向十字架的;
6:293
but this man was the contrary—a fugitive.
Then the king of the Persians commanded that the prison-keepers be led away.
Manes was the cause, through his arrogance, of death to the boy, and the cause of death to the prison-keepers through his flight.
He then who was the cause of death—ought such a one to be worshiped? Ought he not to have imitated Jesus and said, "If you seek Me, let these go their way"? Ought he not, like Jonah, to have said, "Take me up and cast me into the sea;"
"for this tempest is on my account"? He flees out of prison, and comes into Mesopotamia;
「這風暴是因我的緣故臨到你們的」?他從監裡逃出,來到米所波大米;
6:298
but there meets him a weapon of righteousness, Archelaus the bishop.
And refuting him before philosophers as judges, having gathered a Greek audience, lest the judges should seem to show favor if Christians were judging—
"Say," says Archelaus to Manes, "what you proclaim."
And he, having his mouth as an open grave, began first with blasphemy of the Maker of all things, declaring:
"The God of the Old Testament is the inventor of evils, saying concerning Himself, 'I am a God, a consuming fire.'"
But the wise Archelaus undid the blasphemy, saying:
"If the God of the Old Testament, according to your statement, calls Himself fire, whose Son is He who says, 'I came to cast fire upon the earth'? If you blame Him who says, 'The Lord kills and makes alive,'
why do you honor Peter, who raised up Tabitha but put Sapphira to death? But if you also blame Him because He prepared fire,
why do you not blame Him who says, 'Depart [from Me] into the everlasting fire'? If you blame Him who says, 'I am God, who makes peace and creates evils,'
explain how Jesus says, 'I came not to cast peace, but a sword.'
For since both say the like things, one of two things follows:
either both are good because of the sameness of expression;
或是二者因措辭相同而都是善的;
6:310
or if Jesus is blameless in saying these things, why do you find fault with Him who says the like in the Old Testament?" Then Manes says to him:
"And what sort of God blinds? For it is Paul who says:
'In whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the illumination of the gospel should not dawn upon them.'"
But Archelaus, parrying well, says, "Read on a little before."
"But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing."
Do you see that it is veiled among those who are perishing? For one must not give the holy things to dogs.
Then again, was it only the God of the Old Testament who blinded the minds of the unbelieving? Did not Jesus Himself say, 'For this reason I speak to them in parables, that seeing they may not see'? Did He, hating them, wish that they should not see? Or was it on account of their unworthiness, since they had closed their eyes? For where there is self-chosen wickedness, there is also withholding of grace.
6:317
"and from him who has not, even that which he seems [to have shall be taken away]."
But if it is necessary, as some also explain, to say this:
even if He blinded the minds of the unbelieving, He blinded them for a good end, that they might look up to good things.
For He did not say, 'He blinded their soul';
因為祂並沒有說:『祂弄瞎了他們的魂』;
6:321
but rather, 'the minds of the unbelieving.'
And what is meant is something like this:
blind the lewd thoughts of the fornicator, and the man is saved.
Blind the rapacious and thievish disposition of the robber, and the man is saved.
But you are not willing to understand it thus.
The sun too blinds those of weak sight;
太陽也使視力微弱的人目眩;
6:327
and those with diseased eyes are blinded, being harmed by the light;
患眼疾的人也因受了光的損害而目眩;
6:328
not because the sun is blinding, but because the substance of their eyes does not see.
So also the unbelievers, being diseased in their hearts, cannot gaze upon the rays of the Godhead.
And He did not say, 'He blinded their minds so that they should not hear the gospel';
並且祂沒有說:『祂弄瞎了他們的心思,叫他們聽不見福音』;
6:331
but, 'that the illumination of the glory of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ should not dawn upon them.'
For to hear the gospel is permitted to all;
因為聽見福音是人人都可的;
6:333
but the glory of the gospel is set apart for the genuine ones of Christ alone.
The Lord spoke in parables to those who were not able to hear;
主對那些不能聽的人是用比喻講;
6:335
but to His disciples He privately expounded the parables.
For the radiance of the glory is, to those who are enlightened, illumination; to the unbelieving, blinding.
These mysteries, which the Church now expounds to you who are being changed over from among the catechumens, it is not the custom to expound to the heathen.
For we do not expound to a heathen the mysteries concerning the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, nor do we speak plainly about the mysteries before catechumens;
因為我們不向外邦人講解關於父、子、聖靈的奧秘,也不在慕道者面前明明地談論這些奧秘;
6:339
but we often say [many things] in a veiled way, that the faithful who know may understand, and those who do not know may not be harmed.
By these and many more arguments the dragon was overthrown;
藉著這些以及更多的論據,那龍被推翻了;
6:341
by such grapplings Archelaus wrestled down Manes.
Again from here too he flees, he who had fled from prison;
那從監裡逃跑的,這時又從此處逃走;
6:343
and slipping away from his adversary, he comes to a most insignificant village, like the serpent in paradise who left Adam and approached Eve.
But the good shepherd Archelaus, taking forethought for the sheep, when he heard of the flight, immediately hastened at a run in pursuit of the wolf.
And Manes, suddenly seeing his opponent, leaped up and fled;
瑪尼忽然看見他的對頭,便跳起來逃跑了;
6:346
and he fled his last flight.
For the bodyguards of the king of the Persians, searching everywhere, seized the fugitive;
因為波斯王的衛士四處搜尋,捉住了這逃犯;
6:348
and the sentence which he should have received before Archelaus, this the king's bodyguards brought upon him.
Manes, whom his own disciples worship, is seized and led before the king.
The king upbraided him with the lie and the flight;
王責備他那謊言和逃跑;
6:351
he avenged the murder of the boy;
他為那孩子被殺伸冤;
6:352
he condemned him also on account of the murder of the prison-keepers.
He ordered Manes to be flayed according to the Persian custom.
And the rest of the body was given over to beasts for food;
其餘的身體被丟給野獸作食物;
6:355
but the skin, the receptacle of that most wicked mind, was hung up like a sack before the gates.
He who called himself the Paraclete, and professed to know things to come, knew not his own flight and capture.
Of this man there were three disciples: Thomas, and Baddas, and Hermas.
Let no one read the Gospel according to Thomas;
誰都不可讀那《多馬福音》;
6:359
for it is not of one of the twelve apostles, but of one of the three wicked disciples of Manes.
Let no one consort with the soul-destroying Manichaeans, who counterfeit the gloom of fasting with waters of chaff;
誰都不可與那害人靈魂的摩尼教徒往來,他們用糠秕之水假冒禁食的愁苦樣子;
6:361
who slander the Maker of foods, yet gluttonously devour the choicest of foods;
他們毀謗那食物的創造者,卻貪饞地吞吃最上等的食物;
6:362
who teach that he who plucks up this herb is changed into it.
For if he who cuts down herbs or any of the vegetables is changed into it, into how many things shall farmers and gardeners' children be changed? Against how many things has the gardener brought the pruning-hook, as we see;
因為若割草或割任何蔬菜的人都要變成那物,那麼農夫和園丁的兒女豈不要變成何等多的東西?正如我們所見,園丁向何等多的東西下了鐮刀;
6:364
into what then is he changed? Truly their teachings are full of laughter and condemnation and shame.
The same man, being a shepherd of sheep, has both slain a sheep and killed a wolf;
同一個人作牧羊人,既宰了羊,又殺了狼;
6:366
into what then is he changed? Many men have netted fishes and snared birds;
那麼他要變成甚麼呢?許多人曾用網捕魚、用膠黏鳥;
6:367
into what then are those who plunder changed? Offspring of idleness are the Manichaeans, who do not work but devour the goods of those who work;
那麼那些劫掠者要變成甚麼呢?摩尼教徒乃是懶惰的子孫,自己不作工,卻吞吃作工之人的東西;
6:368
who receive with smiling faces those who bring them food, and in return for blessings render curses.
For whenever some foolish person brings them [something], the Manichaean says, "Stand a little outside, and I will bless you."
Then, taking the bread into his hands (as those of them who have repented have confessed), the Manichaean says to the bread, "I did not make you;"
and he sends curses up to the Most High, and curses Him who made it, and so eats what was made.
If you hate the foods, why did you look with a smiling face on the one who brought it? If you are grateful to him who brought it, why do you send blasphemy up to God who prepared and created it? And again, he says, "I did not sow you;"
6:373
"I did not reap you with sickles."
Fine returns indeed for grace!
Great evils are these too, but still small compared with the others.
I do not dare, in the presence of men and women, to describe their washing.
I do not dare to tell into what they dip the fig-cake before giving it to the wretches.
Let it be indicated only by hints.
For let men consider the things that occur in nocturnal emissions, and women the things in their menstruation.
We truly defile even our mouth in saying these things.
Are the Greeks more abominable than these? Are the Samaritans more godless than these? Are the Jews more impious than these? Are fornicators more unclean than these? For the fornicator, by reason of lust, completes the act for one hour;
希臘人比這些人更可憎麼?撒瑪利亞人比這些人更不敬神麼?猶太人比這些人更不敬虔麼?行淫的人比這些人更不潔麼?因為行淫的人乃是因情慾,在一時之間完成那事;
6:382
and condemning the act, knowing that he has been defiled, he knows that he needs washing, and recognizes the abominableness of the act.
But the Manichaean, in the midst of what he regards as an altar, places these things, and defiles both his mouth and his tongue.
From such a mouth, O man, do you receive teaching? Do you, on merely meeting this man, greet him with a kiss? Apart from the rest of the impiety, do you not flee the defiled, and those worse than the licentious, more abominable than every prostitute that plies her trade? The Church gives this warning and teaches it, and touches the mire, that you may not be befouled.
It tells of the wounds, that you may not be wounded.
It is enough for you only to know;
你只要知道,就夠了;
6:387
but refrain from taking it up by experience.
God thunders, and we all tremble;
神打雷,我們眾人都戰兢;
6:389
God flashes lightning, and we all bow down to the ground;
神發閃電,我們眾人都俯伏於地;
6:390
yet those men keep their blasphemous tongues directed against heaven.
Jesus says concerning [His] Father, "Who makes His sun to rise on the just and the unjust, and sends rain on the good and the evil."
But those men say that the rains come from an amorous madness.
And they dare to say that there is a certain virgin in heaven, beautiful, together with a beautiful young man;
他們竟敢說,天上有一個貌美的童女,與一個貌美的少年一同;
6:394
and that, like camels or wolves in their season, they have their seasons of shameful lust;
又說他們像駱駝或狼那樣,到了季候就有那可恥情慾的季候;
6:395
and that in the season of storms he madly runs after the virgin, and she flees, they say, while he runs after her;
又說在風暴的季候,他便瘋狂地追逐那童女,據他們說,她逃跑,他則追趕;
6:396
and that from his sweat comes the rain.
These things are written in the books of the Manichaeans.
These things we have read, disbelieving those who tell them.
6:399

what concord have your things with theirs? What has light to do with darkness, what has the venerableness of the Church to do with the abomination of the Manichaeans? Here is order, here is knowledge, here is reverence, here is purity;

here fear and trembling toward Him who sends the rain is taught;
這裡有人受教,對那降雨者存敬畏戰兢的心;
6:411
