Οὐκ ἐν τῷ λέγειν, ἀλλ ἐν τῷ εἶναι ὁ κρείττων δείκνυσθαι ὀφείλει φιλεῖ. Τοσοῦτον δὲ ἀποδέουσι τὸν νεκρὸν ἐγεῖραι, καθὼς ὁ Κύριος ἤγειρε, καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι διὰ προσευχῆς, καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀδελφότητι πολλάκις διὰ τὸ ἀναγκαῖον, τῆς κατὰ τόπον ἐκκλησίας πάσης αἰτησαμένης μετὰ νηστείας πολλῆς καὶ λιτανείας, ἐπέστρεψε τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ τετελελευτηκότος, καὶ ἐχαρίσθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος ταῖς εὐχαῖς τῶν ἁγίων
Not in saying, but in being, ought the better man to be shown to love. But so far are they from being able to raise the dead — as the Lord raised them, and the apostles did through prayer, and as has often happened in the brotherhood out of necessity, when the whole local church has made petition with much fasting and supplication, so that the spirit of the deceased returned and the man was granted back to the prayers of the saints.
那更美的人應當顯出他的愛，不是在言語上，乃是在實際上。然而他們卻全然無力叫死人復活——不像主使死人復活那樣，也不像眾使徒藉著禱告所行的那樣，更不像在弟兄相愛的團體中常因必要而發生的那樣：那時，全地方的教會都以多多禁食和懇求祈禱，以致那已死之人的靈魂得以歸回，那人也因眾聖徒的祈求而蒙恩被賜還。

Εἰ δὲ καὶ τὸν κύριον φαντασιωδῶς τὰ τοιαῦτα πεποιηκέναι ποιηκέναι φήσουσιν, ἐπὶ τὰ προφητικὰ ἀνάγοντες αὐτοὺς, ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπιδείξομεν, πάντα οὕτως περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ προειρῆσθαι, καὶ γεγονέναι βεβαίως, καὶ αὐτὸν μόνον εἶναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ. Διὸ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἐκείνου ὀνόματι οἱ ἀληθῶς αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ, παρ αὐτοῦ λαβόντες τὴν χάριν, ἐπιτελοῦσιν ἐπʼ εὐεργεσίᾳ τῇ τῶν λοιπῶν ἀνθρώπων, καθὼς εἷς ἕκαστος αὐτῶν τὴν δωρεὰν εἴληφε παρ αὐτοῦ. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ δαίμονας ἐλαύνουσι βεβαίως καὶ ἀληθῶς, ὥστε πολλάκις καὶ πιστεύειν αὐτοὺς ἐκείνους τοὺς καθαρισθέντας ἀπὸ τῶν πονηρῶν πνευμάτων, καὶ εἶναι ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ. Οἱ δὲ καὶ πρόγνωσιν ἔχουσι τῶν μελλόντων, καὶ ὀπτασίας, καὶ ῥήσεις προφητικάς. Ἄλλοι δὲ τοὺς κάμνοντας διὰ τῆς τῶν χειρῶν ἐπιθέσεως ἰῶνται, καὶ ὑγιεῖς ἀποκαθιστᾶσιν. Ἤδη δὲ, καθὼς ἔφαμεν, καὶ νεκροὶ ἠγέρθησαν, καὶ παρέμειναν σὺν ὑμῖν ἱκανοῖς ἔτεσι. Καὶ τί γάρ; οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμὸν εἰπεῖν τῶν χαρισμάτων, ὧν κατὰ παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου ἡ ἐκκλησία παρὰ Θεοῦ λαβοῦσα, ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, τοῦ σταυρωθέντος ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου, ἑκάστης ἡμέρας ἐπʼ εὐεργεσίᾳ τῇ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἐπιτελεῖ, μήτε ἐξαπατῶσα τινὰς. μήτε ἐξαργυριζομένη. Ὡς γὰρ δωρεὰν εἴληφε παρὰ Θεοῦ, δωρεὰν καὶ διακονεῖ. Ἀλλʼ ὡς εἷς ἕκαστος ἡμῶν ἴδιον σῶμα λαμβάνει, οὕτως καὶ ἰδίαν ἔχει ψυχήν. Οὐ γὰρ πτωχὸς οὐδὲ ἄπορος ὁ Θεὸς, ὥστε μὴ ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ σώματι ἰδίαν κεχαρίσθαι ψυχὴν, καθάπερ καὶ ἴδιον χαρακτῆρα. Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πληρωθέντος τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ, οὗ αὖτὸς παῤ αὐτῷ προώρισε, πάντες οἱ ἐγγραφέντες εἰς ζωὴν ἀναστήσονται, ἴδια ἔχοντες σώματα, καὶ ἰδίας ἔχοντες ψυχὰς, καὶ ἴδια πνείματα, ἐν οἷς εὐηρέστησαν τῷ Θεῷ. Οἱ δὲ τῆς κολάσεως ἄξιοι ἀπελεύσονται εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἰδίας ἔχοντες ψυχὰς, καὶ ἴδια σώματα, ἐν οἷς ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτος. Καὶ παύσονται ἑκάτεροι τοῦ γεννᾶν ἔτι, καὶ γεννᾶσθαι, καὶ γαμεῖν καὶ γαμεῖσθαι· ἵνα τὸ σύμμετρον φῦλον τῆς προορίσεως ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἀνθρωπότητος ἀποτελεσθεὶς, τὴν ἁρμονίαν τηρήσῃ τοῦ Πατρός
But if they should say that even the Lord did such things only in appearance (as a phantasm), we will, by leading them back to the prophetic writings, demonstrate from these that all things were both foretold concerning him in this way and have surely come to pass, and that he alone is the Son of God. For this reason also, in his name, his true disciples, having received the grace from him, perform works for the benefit of the rest of mankind, each one according as he has received the gift from him. For some drive out demons surely and truly, so that often those very persons who have been cleansed from the wicked spirits both believe and are in the Church. Others have foreknowledge of things to come, and visions, and prophetic utterances. Still others heal the sick by the laying on of hands and restore them to health. Indeed, as we have said, even the dead have been raised and have remained with us for many years. And what more shall I say? It is not possible to tell the number of the gifts which the Church throughout the whole world, having received them from God in the name of Jesus Christ who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, performs every day for the benefit of the nations, neither deceiving anyone nor taking money for it. For as she has freely received from God, so also she freely ministers. But just as each one of us receives his own body, so also he has his own soul. For God is neither poor nor lacking in resources, so as not to bestow on each individual body its own soul, just as also its own distinctive character. And therefore, when the number is complete which he himself has foreordained with himself, all who have been enrolled unto life shall rise again, having their own bodies, and their own souls, and their own spirits, in which they were well-pleasing to God. But those worthy of punishment shall depart into it, they too having their own souls and their own bodies, in which they departed from the grace of God. And both classes shall cease from begetting and being begotten any longer, and from marrying and being given in marriage; so that the appointed measure of the human race foreordained by God, being brought to completion, may preserve the harmony of the Father.
但他們若說，連主也不過是以幻象（虛假地）行了這類的事，我們就要把他們帶回到那些先知的著作，並從這些著作向他們證明：關於他的一切事，都是這樣被預先說明，並確實已經應驗，而且唯有他是神的兒子。也正因如此，他真正的門徒奉他的名，從他領受了恩典，便為著其餘人類的益處施行各樣的善工，各人都照著他從主所領受的恩賜行事。有些人切實而真確地趕鬼，以致那些從邪靈得潔淨的人，往往就信了，並留在教會中。另有些人擁有對將來之事的預知、異象，以及先知的話語。又有些人藉著按手醫治病人，使他們恢復健康。實在的，正如我們所說，連死人也曾復活，並與我們同住多年。我還有甚麼可說的呢？教會在普天之下，奉那在本丟彼拉多手下被釘十字架的耶穌基督的名，從神領受了這些恩賜，天天為著外邦人的益處施行出來，數目多得無法盡述；她既不欺哄任何人，也不藉此圖利。因為她怎樣白白地從神領受，也就怎樣白白地服事。然而，正如我們各人都領受自己的身體，照樣，他也各有自己的魂。因為神並非貧窮，也非缺乏資財，以致不能賜給每一個身體它自己的魂，正如也賜給它自己獨特的性情一樣。也因此，到那數目滿足之時——就是他自己在他那裏所預定的數目——凡被記名歸入生命的人，都必復活，各人都有自己的身體、自己的魂、自己的靈，就是他們在其中得神喜悅的。但那些該受刑罰的人，也必進入那刑罰，他們也各有自己的魂、自己的身體，就是他們在其中離棄神恩典的。兩等人都必不再生養、也不再被生，不再嫁娶、也不再被許配；好叫那由神所預定、合乎定數的人類族類得以完成，從而保守那父的和諧。
