To the giver of victory, for the sons of Korah.
15:2
O God, with our ears we have heard, our fathers have declared to us the work that You wrought in their days, in days of old.
15:3
Another translator says: 'In the days that were before.'
15:4
這篇詩篇固然是先知所說的;
This psalm the Prophet indeed speaks;
15:5
yet he speaks it not in his own person, but in the person of the Maccabees, narrating and foretelling beforehand the things that were to be in that time.
15:6
因為眾先知正是這樣;
For such are the prophets;
15:7
they range over all times—the past, the present, and the future.
15:8
But who these Maccabees were, and what they suffered, and what they accomplished, it is necessary first to tell, so that what is said may become clearer with regard to the subject.
15:9
因為當那稱為以彼法尼的安提阿古前來攻擊、毀壞一切,並強迫當時許多人背棄祖先的制度時,這些人卻絲毫不受那些試煉的損害;
For these men, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, came against them and destroyed all things, and forced many of that time to dance away from their ancestral polity, remained in no way harmed by those trials;
15:10
and when the war blew heavily upon them, they were able to do nothing more.
15:11
Since the apostles also did this.
15:12
For they did not always appear in the open and leap into dangers, but there were times when they withdrew, fleeing and hiding themselves.
15:13
但當他們稍微喘過氣來,就像一群勇猛的幼犬,從洞穴中躍出、從藏身之處探頭而出,決意不再單單拯救自己,也要盡其所能地拯救別人;
But when they had recovered their breath a little, like certain noble young hounds, springing out of their caves and peering forth from their hiding places, they resolved no longer to save themselves alone, but others also, as many as they were able;
15:14
他們巡行遍及全城與全地,把所遇見一切心志堅定的人都招聚起來;
and going about through all the city and the country, they gathered up all whom they found to be soundly disposed;
15:15
and many also of those who had grown weary and been corrupted they won back again, persuading them to run back to the ancestral law.
15:16
For they declared that God is a lover of mankind, and never takes away the salvation that comes through repentance.
15:17
And saying these things, they enrolled armies of noble men.
15:18
因為他們爭戰,並非為了妻子、兒女與婢女,也非為了抵擋家園被遷徙與奴役,乃是為了律法與祖先的制度;
For they fought not on behalf of wives and children and maidservants, nor against the removal and enslavement of their homeland, but on behalf of the law and their ancestral polity;
15:19
and God was their general.
15:20
Drawing up in battle array, therefore, and giving up their very lives, they overthrew their adversaries, not trusting in weapons, but having, in place of all full armor, the sufficient cause of their battle.
15:21
所以他們上陣爭戰時,並不像有些人那樣高唱悲歌、頌詠凱歌,也不在陣前安置吹笛的人,如同別的軍隊所行的;
Going therefore into the war, they did not chant tragic strains, nor sing paeans, as some do, nor set flute-players before them, as in other armies;
15:22
but they called upon God from above to be present and to fight alongside them and to stretch out His hand—Him for whose sake they were being warred against, for whose glory they were contending.
15:23
Let us see, therefore, what this army of God utters—this army fenced about with spiritual aid, about to advance upon its enemies.
15:24
O God, with our ears we have heard.
15:25
For since some of those arrayed with them, seeing the multitude and the battle-line of Antiochus, and his victory, and that they were seizing everything by sudden onslaught, and reckoning their own weakness and fewness, had grown softer and feebler, he, rousing their spirit and showing that everything rests upon the generalship of God, and that even without armies, with Him fighting alongside, it is possible to prevail, offers in the form of a prayer a certain exhortation and counsel to the soldiers, and by conversing with God makes them more eager.
15:26
And this is no small part of consolation.
15:27
For the word would not have had equal force had it been turned toward those men, as when it is directed toward God.
15:28
Wherefore also, going on, he said this:
15:29
They inherited the land not by their own sword, and their own right hand did not save them.
15:30
For this was the saying of one restoring those who were more feebly disposed toward the toils—those who were seeking victory according to human sequence of cause and effect.
15:31
This whole prayer, then, is an exhortation to the armies, bidding them to cast their all upon God and to make their victory hang upon the hope that comes from Him.
15:32
But why did he not say simply, 'We have heard,' but rather, 'With our ears we have heard'? For with what other part of the body does one hear? Are the words, then, mere superfluity? God forbid!
15:33
Rather, it is a common custom among men, when they are recounting things of which they are fully convinced, and are making their narrative concern certain great and extraordinary matters, in speaking to those who are not yet fully persuaded, always to bring in the ears, declaring that they have heard with their own ears.
15:34
And it is not only in this activity, but in others also, that we are wont to do the same thing, calling the senses themselves to witness.
15:35
To make the addition of the ears, therefore, is characteristic of those who would gain full credence with the hearer.
15:36
Since in the case of the eyes and the hands also we do the same, as when we say,
15:37
'With our hands we have handled.'
15:38
And the apostles too said, 'What our eyes have seen,'
15:39
'what our hands have handled.'
15:40
But observe their virtue even from the very outset, and from this point onward.
15:41
Having suffered so many and so grievous ills for God's sake, cast out of their homeland, deprived of their freedom, fallen into perils, some even having become fugitives, pursued across the
15:42
山嶺與曠野;然而此刻他們對這一切卻隻字不提,並不說:「我們為你的緣故受了這樣那樣的苦,求你幫助我們」;
mountains and the deserts, yet for the present they say nothing of these things, that 'We suffered this and that for Your sake; help us';
15:43
but rather, as though destitute of such pleas of justice, and having no confidence drawn from their own good deeds, they thus take refuge in what was done for their forefathers by God.
15:44
因為那些毫無坦然無懼之人如此行,並不足為奇,因為是急難把他們逼到這地步;
For that those who have no confidence should do this is nothing marvelous, since necessity drags them to it;
15:45
但那些本能憑自己善行說出偉大之事的人,卻認為當得拯救,不是憑這些善行,而是憑神的慈愛,就是他們列祖從前也曾享受過的——這乃是他們極大謙卑之心的表徵;
but that those who are able to speak great things from their own good deeds should think it right to be saved, not from these, but from the loving-kindness of God, which their fathers also enjoyed—this is a sign of their great humility of mind;
15:46
and from this too they furnish for themselves no small ground for zeal.
15:47
For the very name of God alone suffices to bring to nought ten thousand wars.
15:48
'Our fathers have told us.'
15:49
Hear this, all you who neglect your own children, all you who look on while they sing devilish ditties, yet neglect the divine narratives.
15:50
但這些人卻不是這樣的人;反倒是不斷地在敘述神大能作為的事上度過他們的一生;
But these were not such men; rather, they spent their life continually in the narratives of God's mighty deeds;
15:51
and they made their gain twofold.
15:52
因為那些蒙受恩惠的人,既記念這些恩德,就變得更好;
For those who had received the benefits, being mindful of the kindnesses, became better;
15:53
and their descendants received from these narratives no small foundation for the knowledge of God, and were led on toward zeal for virtue.
15:54
For the mouths of those who had begotten them were as books to them, and every leisure and every occupation was taken up with these narratives, than which nothing was more delightful nor more profitable.
15:55
For if mere narratives of events, and fables, and fictions are wont often to charm the hearers,
15:56
much more did these display abundant beneficence, power, wisdom, and providence, and along with the delight they raised up the hearer and made him more earnest.
15:57
For those who were present at the events, and had received them by sight, handed them down by hearing; and the hearing was equally as valid as the sight for producing faith.
15:58
For those who were not present and did not behold believed no less than those who were present and beheld.
15:59
And this too was for them no small anointing unto faith.
15:60
But let us see what they narrated, and whether they call to mind a like theme.
15:61
For he who is about to ask something of another, and to obtain his request, ought to ask for things like those granted to others, on that ground.
15:62
And what I mean is this:
15:63
譬如,有某個家僕向我們求一份恩惠;
for instance, some household servant asks of us a favor;
15:64
if he can point to another who has received the same, he sets forth that same grant as the strongest ground for his receiving it—provided only that the example be not impaired by any difference.
15:65
And by 'difference' I mean a difference of person or of matter.
15:66
因為那領受的人若與求討的人是同樣的人,且所求的事物也相似,這例證便能站立得穩;
For if the one who received be such a person as the one who asks, and the thing asked be alike, the example stands firm;
15:67
but if the former was worthy to receive, while the latter is not, there is need of a greater entreaty.
15:68
然而,我也必須從聖經中把我所說的講明清楚;
But it is necessary to make clear from the Scriptures also what I say;
15:69
The Canaanite woman, when she heard, 'It is not right to take the children's bread and to give it to the dogs,' says, 'Yes, Lord;'
15:70
'for even the dogs eat of the crumbs from their masters' table.'
15:71
And Paul again, when he wrote, said:
15:72
If others share in this authority over you, how much more do we!
15:73
Here he makes his claim greater by reason of the difference of the person.
15:74
And again, when writing to Philemon, he said:
15:75
For the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
15:76
Wherefore, though I have much boldness in Christ to command you what is fitting, yet for love's sake I rather beseech you.
15:77
Here the example is drawn from equality.
15:78
For when someone is the first to have received, he opens, as it were, a door for the second, provided that the one who is about to ask is of like kind, or asks for the same things.
15:79
And not only from what has been given to others, but also from what has already been granted to ourselves, does entreaty often become strong.
15:80
This too Paul did when writing to the Philippians, and saying:
15:81
For even in Thessalonica you sent once and again to my need.
15:82
For this reason many, when they give to many, enjoin this: that they should not tell others, lest the favour shown to the one man stir up against the giver a multitude of those who ask, as though the one who has once given had no place to which to withdraw for refuge, unless he should give to others also.
15:83
But men, indeed, command this with good reason, since by giving they have become poorer.
15:84
But God, on the contrary, both proclaims and cries aloud the things given to others, so as to provide to others also an occasion for asking Him again.
15:85
For by giving, His riches are shown to be greater.
15:86
He that is rich unto all, and upon all that call upon Him.
15:87
Have you seen a new kind of wealth? This same generosity do you also imitate.
15:88
因為當你把積存的財富花用出去時,你反倒使它增多;
For when you have spent the wealth that is laid up, then rather will you increase it;
15:89
but if you bury it, then rather have you diminished it.
15:90
這事若發生在屬靈的事上,有什麼希奇呢?既然連在屬肉體的事上也是如此。因為人若愛惜自己的麥子,讓它擱在家裡,既不使用,也不撒在田間,他便是把它交給蟲子的口了;
And what wonder if this happens in spiritual things, when indeed it comes to pass thus even in fleshly things? For if a man, sparing his corn, should let it lie at home and neither spend it nor cast it forth upon the ploughed fields, he has delivered it up to the mouths of the worms;
15:91
but if he scatters it abroad, he brings about a greater harvest.
15:92
Hear this, all you who are sluggish toward almsgiving.
15:93
Hear this, you who diminish your own wealth by hoarding it.
15:94
Hear this, you who are no better off than those who are rich in a dream.
15:95
因為今生的事物並不比一場夢更強;
For the things of the present are no better than a dream;
15:96
正如那些在睡夢中幻想自己擁有財寶的人,縱使作了王家庫房的主人,到了天亮時,卻比眾人都更窮乏;
but just as those who in their sleep imagine that they possess riches, even though they become lords of the royal treasuries, are poorer than all when day comes;
15:97
今生也是如此,那不能帶任何東西到那裡去的人,縱使擁有眾人一切的財物,也必比眾人都更窮乏;
so also in this present life, he who was able to carry nothing thither will be poorer than all, even though he possessed the goods of all men;
15:98
所以你若要指給我看那富足的人,就當在天亮的時候指給我看,就是在我們回到那本鄉的時候;
If, then, you would show me the man of means, show him to me then, when day has come, when we have departed into that homeland;
15:99
but now I will not consent to distinguish the rich man and the poor man.
15:100
For there is here no truth of things, but rather a mere grace and fair-sounding of names.
15:101
正如眾人稱瞎子為「明眼的」,然而事實卻不隨從那名稱,反倒正是這些人才是看不見的;
For just as the multitude call the blind 'sharp-sighted,' yet the reality does not follow the name, but these are precisely the ones who do not see;
15:102
so also, I say, the name of 'the rich' is here bandied about of those who possess nothing there.
15:103
For when a man is rich here, then most of all do I know that he is poor.
15:104
For if he were not exceedingly poor, he would not be exceedingly rich.
15:105
正如人若不是完全瞎了眼,就不會稱那殘疾的人為「明眼的」;
For just as they would not have called the maimed man 'sharp-sighted' unless he had been wholly blinded;
15:106
so also here must one reason.
15:107
Having therefore put away the deceit of names, let us lay hold of the truth of things.
15:108
For things do not stand in names, but the natures of things fashion the names according to their proper essence.
15:109
So-and-so is called rich, but he is not.
15:110
And how is he not, when much silver, and much gold, and precious stones, and golden garments, and all other things flow around him? Because it is not gold, nor garments, nor money, but almsgiving that makes a man rich. For these things are grass, these are wood and stubble.
15:111
For what garment, tell me, will then be able to clothe the man who stands naked before that dread tribunal? This too was what Paul feared when he said:
15:112
'If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.'
15:113
What riches will be able to deliver the man in peril? What household servants will stand beside a master who is being scourged? What houses? What precious stones? What baths will be able to scour away the filth that comes from sins? How long will you go on deceiving yourselves? How long will you fail to discern the truth of things, but instead stand gaping after dreams, while judgment is near, even at the doors? But let us return to the matter before us.
15:114
'Our fathers have told us the work which Thou didst work in their days, in the days of old.'
15:115
It is possible for us too to say this, according to a like manner.
15:116
For if to those men their fathers gave the account, yet to us also the grace of God has granted, through the visitation of the Spirit, to learn the things concerning them.
15:117
And how might one take these things by way of a higher interpretation? By drawing them toward the achievements of the new grace: that we have been raised up toward heaven, that we have been counted worthy of the kingdom, that God has become man, having broken down the middle wall of partition.
15:118
But let us now proceed to the historical sense.
15:119
'The work which Thou didst work in their days, in the days of old.'
15:120
He makes mention of an ancient narrative, and brings forward the achievements of old.
15:121
他為甚麼不提某件新近的事呢?因為在人中間,我們理當講述近來的事,並藉這些事吸引他們,因為他們的記憶容易衰退;
And for what reason does he not make mention of something new and recent? Because among men it is reasonably of recent events that we make our narrative, and by these we draw them on, seeing that their memory grows feeble;
15:122
but with God all things are known alike, both the old and the new.
15:123
'For behold,' it says, 'Thou hast known all things, the last and the first.'
15:124
It makes no difference whether one relates an old narrative or a new one, only let it be suited to the subject at hand.
15:125
What ancient narrative, then, does he mean to tell? Let us hear:
15:126
'Thy hand utterly destroyed the nations,' it says, 'and Thou didst plant them;'
15:127
'Thou didst afflict the peoples, and didst cast them out.'
15:128
那麼你們認出他所說的是甚麼戰爭、甚麼勝利、甚麼凱旋標記了嗎,還是仍需我們為你們講得更明白些?我想已經有許多人看出這話的意思了;
Have you then recognized what war he speaks of, what victory, what trophy, or do you still need clearer explanation from us? Already, I think, many have perceived what is meant;
15:129
but for the sake of those who do not know, it is necessary to add our own explanation as well.
15:130
那麼他提的是甚麼凱旋標記呢?是甚麼作為呢?就是在埃及所行的、在曠野所行的、在應許之地所行的;
Of what trophies, then, does he make mention? Of what achievements? Of those in Egypt, of those in the wilderness, of those in the land of promise;
15:131
or rather, of those in the promise itself.
15:132
For it was not those who came out of Egypt who also obtained Palestine, but they all fell in the wilderness.
15:133
當那些從他們所生、又在曠野中養大的人終於進入巴勒斯坦時,經上說,他們並不需要兵器;
When at length those who were born of them, and who were reared in the wilderness, entered into Palestine, it says, they had no need of arms;
15:134
but with a mere shout they took the cities, and having crossed the Jordan, the first city that met them, Jericho, they brought down as though dancing rather than making war.
15:135
For arrayed in arms not as for battles but as for a festival, they went forth, having put on their arms rather for adornment than for safety, and clothed in their sacred vestments, and having the Levites leading their host, they encircled the wall.
15:136
And it was a wondrous and marvellous spectacle to behold: so many thousands of hosts marching in order and rhythm, in quietness and great decorum, as though no one were present, while by that harmony of the trumpets the whole was being accomplished.
15:137
Let those be ashamed who make a tumult in church.
15:138
For if where trumpets were sounding there was such good order, then where God Himself speaks, what pardon shall they obtain who by their own uproar drive out the exactness of others' hearing? But for what reason, one asks, did he not mention those out of Egypt? Because they all fell, because they paid the penalty.
15:139
And for what reason did they all perish? Because they sinned grievously.
15:140
And by this He also arranged another thing: that those who were to inherit Palestine should be untouched by the evils in Egypt, by the superstition, by all the impiety, and should have no teacher of so great a wickedness.
15:141
For so possessed were they beforehand by the custom of the Egyptians, so captivated were they, that even after so many miracles they could not, even in the wilderness, cleanly wipe away the remnants of their error.
15:142
And if they had also received the Canaanites as teachers, more grievous than the former, to what depths of impiety would they not have run aground? For this very reason He kept those who were born in the wilderness there, until the offspring of those men came to the full age of manhood.
15:143
And we say these things not uttering them of our own accord, but demonstrating them from the Scriptures.
15:144
For through Ezekiel God reproaches them with this very thing: that having led them into the wilderness and having discoursed with them at length, He was not heard.
15:145
...did He command them to wear as they were about to approach Jericho? For it would have been more wonderful, had they done this without arms.
15:146
Most of all, then, even if He commands them to do something human, and to take on some perceptible aid, He does this in condescension to their weakness.
15:147
因為披戴兵器對於傾倒城牆能有甚麼用處呢?號角之聲又能有甚麼用處呢?因為若這場戰爭是與人爭戰,人或許還可以把某種分量歸給兵器;
For what could the putting on of arms avail toward the casting down of a wall? And what the sound of trumpets? For if the war had been against men, one might have reckoned some weight even to the arms;
15:148
但既然城牆是註定要倒塌的,那麼佩戴兵器又是為著甚麼呢?再者,在基甸的事上,那些被揀選的人與那些未被揀選的人也是相同的;
but if the wall was destined to fall down, for what reason are arms worn? And again, in the case of Gideon, those who had been chosen were on equal footing with those who had not been chosen;
15:149
for what reason, then, do these things come to pass? So that those who were thus commanded might be led into faith.
15:150
For the soul, having been reared together with the body, and never having beheld anything incorporeal, and gaping after sensible things, needed to be led by the hand from things seen up to things intelligible.
15:151
Hence it came about that even the prophets, when they discoursed about God, had need to make mention of human members — not that they might mould that undefiled nature into the shapes of bodily parts, but that they might instruct through human things a soul reared amid things perceived by the senses in doctrines that are above man.
15:152
Since, then, the operation of God is also something perceptible only to the mind, in order that the people of that time might not disbelieve, He sets before them something perceptible to the senses.
15:153
因為祂若說:「這城要在七日之內傾覆,而你們只需安靜,什麼也不做」,或許許多人便不肯相信;
For if He had said, 'In seven days the city shall be overthrown, while you keep quiet and do nothing,' perhaps many would have disbelieved;
15:154
but as it is, He lays down these injunctions as a kind of footstool for the human understanding.
15:155
And that you may not suppose what is said to be some mere conjecture, I wish to relate to you a certain ancient history which confirms the argument.
15:156
This man, being seized with leprosy and ashamed of his affliction, as one who was in the gravest peril, comes to Palestine — for I must abridge the account — desiring to find from the prophet a release from his malady.
15:157
Having come, therefore, and standing at the man's door, he called for the healer.
15:158
But the prophet indeed heard him, yet did not come out; instead he sent to him, bidding him be washed in the river Jordan.
15:159
But he, since the command was a trifling one, having much of the sensible about it and requiring no lofty understanding, was not persuaded.
15:160
But what does he say? 'I thought that he would surely come out, and lay his hand upon it, and call upon his God, and take away the leprosy.'
15:161
Do you see the soul, how it required some perceptible form? For that he did not think the healer's command sufficient, but required a hand, was a mark of the weakness of the one being healed.
15:162
And many other matters besides are solved for us from this instance.
15:163
正因如此,基督也並非處處單憑話語施行醫治,也用祂的手;
For this reason Christ too does not everywhere heal by word alone, but also by His hand;
15:164
祂確實曾把手探入口中,按在舌頭上;
for indeed He put His hand into the mouth and upon the tongue;
15:165
and in one place doing all things by word alone, in another by His mere will, He healed those who came to Him.
15:166
For what reason, then, did He do this? Because of the weakness of those who came to Him.
15:167
And that you may learn that this was done because of their weakness, those who had no need of such things He praised.
15:168
'For verily I say unto you,' He says, 'not even in Israel have I found so great faith;'
15:169
inasmuch as the centurion did not draw Him into his house, but declared that His command sufficed.
15:170
至於希西家的事,卻沒有這類舉動發生,只有一句預言,並無任何屬人的手段被採用;
In the case of Hezekiah, then, nothing of the sort takes place, but only a prophecy, and nothing human was employed;
15:171
for this very reason, in the case of him who was jealous over his wife, a coarser sort of procedure was enjoined.
15:172
But if you wish to take this in an anagogical sense — 'For all these things,' he says, 'happened to them as types;'
15:173
'and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come' — consider the noblest of the Church's teachers, using the word in place of a trumpet, casting down the walls of the adversaries, and the peoples armed with the whole armour of Jesus.
15:174
And the number of the seven days points us beforehand to the Sabbath.
15:175
For such commandments of the law were not given as a primary end.
15:176
For this reason, concerning the sacrifices He says:
15:177
'For who has required these things at your hands?' And again:
15:178
'Do vows and holy flesh take away sins?'
15:179
'Did you offer to Me slain beasts and sacrifices in the wilderness forty years?' And again:
15:180
'To what purpose do you bring Me frankincense from Sheba, and cinnamon from a far country?' And again:
15:181
'Sacrifice and offering You did not desire.'
15:182
'Does God desire whole burnt offerings and sacrifices, rather than to obey Him?' And, 'If You had desired sacrifice, I would have given it.'
15:183
And casting out the feasts, He says:
15:184
'I have hated, I have rejected your feasts.'
15:185
'Take away from Me the sound of your songs, and the music of your instruments I will not hear.'
15:186
And, 'The great day I cannot endure, and fasting and idleness My soul hates.'
15:187
'This is not the fast that I have chosen.'
15:188
And Ezekiel again said:
15:189
'I will give you statutes that are not good, and ordinances by which you shall not live.'
15:190
Thus here too the Sabbath is done away with.
15:191
Who has required these things at your hands?
15:192
This I leave to you to solve; and you will be able to discover such things, if you display a pure life.
15:193
因為祂既因哥尼流美善的生活,召他去認識那些奧祕的事,又因那太監殷勤地誦讀,使他明白並知曉;
For if He called Cornelius, on account of his excellent life, to the knowledge of hidden things, and made the eunuch, on account of his diligent reading, both to understand and to know;
15:194
much more will He teach you the clearer things, you who have already enjoyed the faith and who display an upright life.
15:195
For just as an unclean life hinders the knowledge of these things, as Paul says:
15:196
我不能把你們當作屬靈的人對你們說話,因為你們中間有紛爭和嫉妒;
I could not speak to you as to spiritual persons, since there are strifes and jealousies among you;
15:197
'They shall desire to know My ways, as a people that has done righteousness,' so a pure life leads the way, together with the diligence that is bent on seeking.
15:198
For 'Seek,' He says, 'and you shall find.'
15:199
And the parable also—of the man asking for loaves from a friend who has already gone to sleep—shows this very thing.
15:200
For this reason Solomon too, since he asked for spiritual things, received also what he had not asked for.
15:201
但當恆切、屬靈的祈求、以及潔淨的生活都齊備時,你且想想那時領受將是何等的容易;
But when perseverance, and a spiritual request, and a pure life are all present, consider how great the ease will be for obtaining;
15:202
and yet perseverance even by itself alone prevailed.
15:203
For 'I say to you,' He says, 'even though he will not give it to him because he is his friend, yet on account of his importunity he will give it to him.'
15:204
But let us return to the matter before us.
15:205
'The work which You wrought in their days, in the days of old.'
15:206
'Your hand utterly destroyed nations, and You planted them.'
15:207
See how properly he has used the expression.
15:208
'For You did not,' he says, 'bring matters to a stop then merely at victory and defeat;'
15:209
而是一切都往前推進得更遠;
but everything went further still;
15:210
and yet before this the terms of the battle-array were not equal.
15:211
因為一方是原本佔據那地的,另一方卻是遷入的外來者;
For the one side were in possession, while the others were newcomers;
15:212
but nevertheless so great a change came about, that the former were plucked up by the roots, while the latter became citizens and inhabitants.
15:213
For this reason concerning the former he says:
15:214
'Your hand utterly destroyed nations;'
15:215
but concerning the Jews, 'He planted them.'
15:216
And by 'hand' he means His power.
15:217
But if He so quickly showed those who came from outside—having neither city nor house, nor anywhere to set out from and take a stand—to be more powerful than those who dwelt within, much more, he says, will He not overlook us who have been cast out from our fathers' inheritance.
15:218
But what is the meaning of 'You planted'? 'You fixed them fast.'
15:219
For that which has been planted becomes settled and firmly fixed.
15:220
What then? Were they not removed, tell me? Were they not carried off into foreign lands? Yes, they were carried off, but not through the weakness of Him who set them down, but through the wickedness of those who were planted.
15:221
For if their own conduct had not been an obstacle, nothing would have hindered them from remaining in their dwelling. 'You afflicted peoples, and cast them out.'
15:222
有些人說這話是指著埃及人說的;
Some say that this is spoken concerning the Egyptians;
15:223
but to me it seems that this too was said concerning the nations.
15:224
For indeed He exacted punishments from those as well, displaying His own power in both respects—both in destroying the enemies, and in knitting together His own people.
15:225
'For not by their own sword did they inherit the land.'
15:226
Another version says, 'For not by their own knife.'
15:227
'Neither did their own arm save them;'
15:228
'but Your right hand, and Your arm, and the light of Your countenance.'
15:229
誠然,眾人在戰爭中都是全副武裝地爭戰的;
And indeed all fought fully armed in the wars;
15:230
armed indeed, yet the work was not that of the weapons, but of God who led the army.
15:231
Do you see how, under the form of a prayer, he sets forth his counsel, exhorting us to cast the whole upon God? And how he calls the matter an inheritance, though neither their fathers, nor their grandfathers, nor their great-grandfathers had held possession of the land, but had passed away in another season? Because the promise had been made to the fathers.
15:232
For 'Come,' He says, 'into the land which I shall show you.'
15:233
And, 'To you will I give the land, and to your seed.'
15:234
Having spoken of a right hand and an arm, since he had made mention of somewhat coarser expressions, see how he raises up his discourse, bringing it back once more, and saying:
15:235
'And the light of your countenance'—that is to say, your succour, your providence.
15:236
For your merely willing it, your merely being present, sufficed for them alone.
15:237
That is to say, because you loved them, because you willed it.
15:238
So that these things were of grace, not of good deeds; nor did they obtain them out of their own virtue, but out of the loving-kindness of God.
15:239
'You are Yourself my King and my God, who commands salvation for Jacob.'
15:240
Another version has: 'Command concerning the salvation of Jacob.'
15:241
And what is this sequence of thought? It has much connection with what has been said.
15:242
For what he says is this:
15:243
We are the descendants of those men, and You are the same God, who both then and now wrought those things.
15:244
Whence, then, so great a change? For surely it is not that that God was one and You another, but You are the same.
15:245
也不是你是同一位,而我卻歸屬於另一位神;
Nor again is it that You are the same, while I ascribe to myself another God;
15:246
but 'You are my King and my God.'
15:247
We have not leaped away from Your rule, we have not enrolled another as our champion.
15:248
「你命定雅各得救恩」;
'Who commands salvation for Jacob';
15:249
that is to say, both the God is the same, and the providence is the same.
15:250
Whence, then, the change of affairs? And what does 'who commands' mean? He who orders, who gives charge that Jacob be saved.
15:251
Here again he sets forth the readiness of the alliance and the greatness of the power; and he does not simply make mention of the forefather, but instead of a legal claim he puts forward his virtue, wishing to move God to compassion.
15:252
'In You will we push down our enemies with the horn.'
15:253
And You are the same, he says, and the providence is the same, and we too enroll You as ours, and we make use of the same weapons.
15:254
For this is what it means: 'In You will we push down our enemies with the horn.'
15:255
But another version says: 'We will push down with the horn those who afflict us.'
15:256
'And in Your name will we bring to nothing those who rise up against us.'
15:257
Why do I say, he asks, 'In You'? It suffices merely to call upon Your name, and to accomplish all things beyond all measure.
15:258
For he did not say, 'We shall prevail,' or, 'We shall get the upper hand,' but, 'We shall bring them to nothing'; nor shall we count them to be anything, he says, nor shall we be afraid, but we shall pursue them as though they were nothing at all.
15:259
Which another interpreter, making it plain, expressed thus:
15:260
showing the victory won by main force, the battle-array without struggle, the fight without fear.
15:261
'For I will not hope in my bow.'
15:262
'And my sword shall not save me.'
15:263
那麼,你既如此,為什麼還使用這些呢?你為何全副武裝,手拿弓與刀呢?因為神如此吩咐;
And for what reason, then, have you used these? Why do you arm yourself, and handle both bow and sword? Because God so commanded;
15:264
for this very reason I make use of them, yet I cast the whole upon Him.
15:265
Thus were they taught to war against their sensible enemies, being fenced about by the help from above; and thus also against the spiritual foes. And you too, therefore, when you make war against the devil, say:
15:266
「我並不倚靠我的兵器」;
'I do not take courage in my weapons';
15:267
that is to say, not in my own strength, nor in my own righteous deeds, but in the mercy of God.
15:268
'It is not in our righteous deeds that we cast our supplication for mercy before You.'
15:269
'For You saved us from those who afflict us, and put to shame those who hate us.'
15:270
To tell of the things of old, he says, and the things of our forefathers? We ourselves hold many pledges of Your providence, and we are able to recount splendid trophies, and victories one upon another, marvellous and beyond all expectation.
15:271
For this reason he said, 'Thou hast put to shame,' showing that Thou didst not simply deliver us, nor simply snatch us away, but together with the shame of those who came against us.
15:272
我們終日要因神誇耀;
In God shall we be praised all the day long;
15:273
and in Thy name will we give thanks for ever.
15:274
We hymn God every single day.
15:275
For the things of the victory, he says, have passed away, but the things of thanksgiving remain with us.
15:276
For by 'all the day long' he means one's whole life.
15:277
For we do not cease to hymn Thee and to glory in Thy alliance and aid.
15:278
因為這是我們的榮耀,這是我們的誇口;我們在眾人面前以此為榮相勉;
For this is our glory, this our boast; in this we vie in honour before all men;
15:279
並非因為我們擁有一座偉大奇妙的城,也非因為我們在戰事上居於首位,更非因為我們憑肉體的力量得勝;
not that we possess a great and wondrous city, nor that we are foremost in victory, nor that we prevail by strength of body;
15:280
乃是因為我們擁有真神——我們就以此誇口;
but that we have the true God—in this we boast;
15:281
not only when Thou dost help us, but even when Thou dost forsake us.
15:282
因為這正是「終日」的意思;
For this is what 'all the day long' means;
15:283
even as Paul also says,
15:284
'But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Christ.'
15:285
For there is not, there is no other glory like this.
15:286
Wherefore again he said, 'And not only so, but we also glory in God.'
15:287
For nothing is equal to this boast.
15:288
因此,願無人因財富而心高氣傲;
Let no one, then, be high-minded on account of wealth;
15:289
let no one on account of any of the things of this life, but on this alone—on having God as Master.
15:290
This is better than all freedom, this is more excellent than the very heavens.
15:291
For if to be heard of this man or that has often brought a man boasting among men, consider how great a glory it brings to be heard of God.
15:292
Wherefore Paul also set this down in place of a great dignity, saying,
15:293
'And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh.'
15:294
But the Hebrew renders this word as 'Selah.'
15:295
'But now Thou hast cast us off and put us to shame.'
15:296
Another rendering: 'But besides these things Thou hast cast us away.'
15:297
'And Thou, O God, wilt not go forth with our hosts.'
15:298
Another rendering: 'And Thou goest not forth before us in our campaigns.'
15:299
For upon being cast off, shame immediately follows, and being exposed to all so as to suffer evil.
15:300
By 'hosts' here he means their armies, since in these lies the king's power; and this too God has wisely ordered, so that there might be a bond between the ruler and the ruled.
15:301
For the king has need of his subjects, and these of their protector, and they have been established in great need of one another.
15:302
So that there might be no arrogance, God has often arranged that the great should have need of the small.
15:303
This He has done even in the case of inanimate things.
15:304
For instance, a little pebble placed beneath has often steadied a tottering column, and a small rudder guides a ship of ten thousand tons' burden and delivers it from danger.
15:305
And what is 'Although Thou hast cast us off'? It means: even having suffered such things, he says, we do not depart from Thee, but glorify Thee, hymn Thee, and take pride in Thee.
15:306
'Thou hast turned us back before our enemies.'
15:307
'And they that hate us spoiled us for themselves.'
15:308
Another says, 'Thou hast made us the lowest before every adversary.'
15:309
See how he heightens the terrors by his words and dramatizes the calamity, showing that even if they were exceedingly sinful, yet they have paid a sufficient penalty.
15:310
This too the young men did out of abundance of spirit in the furnace, singing then and saying:
15:311
You have delivered us into the hands of lawless enemies, of the most hateful, of apostates, and to a king unjust and most wicked above all the earth.
15:312
We have been made small beyond all the nations, and we are lowly in all the earth.
15:313
This too is what he signifies here, as if all but saying:
15:314
我們變得比眾人更被輕看,因為我們已被剝奪了祢的眷顧;
We have become more dishonored than all, since we have been stripped bare of Your providence;
15:315
and the calamities did not even halt at this, but we became plunder for our foes, who parcelled us out among themselves at their own pleasure.
15:316
They plundered us for themselves, that is, since there was no one who could prevent it.
15:317
You have given us like sheep for slaughter, and among the nations You have scattered us.
15:318
Another version says, You have winnowed us.
15:319
What does 'like sheep for slaughter' mean? It means: having made us easy to assail, having shown us to be of no account.
15:320
因為也有為蓄養而留的羊,就是宜於繁殖的;
For there are also sheep kept for breeding, those fit for procreation;
15:321
but the others, on account of old age or barrenness, are useful only for food.
15:322
And what is indeed harder still: to be divided out among the nations as well—which was to them heavier than all—namely, not even to be able to keep the Law there with exactness, and to have fallen away from their ancestral polity.
15:323
And not into one nation only, he says, but everywhere; and we are ready for one thing alone, namely to suffer ill, but to defend ourselves or to lift up our hands against them we have not even the strength.
15:324
For this is what the image of the sheep signifies.
15:325
You have sold Your people without price.
15:326
Another version says, For no wealth.
15:327
And there was no abundance in the exchange for us.
15:328
And You did not set their price high.
15:329
What he means is something like this:
15:330
for indeed the saying seems exceedingly obscure; but give heed, that you may sing psalms with understanding.
15:331
Τί οὖν.
What then is being said? It sets forth their cheapness and worthlessness.
15:332
As being worth nothing, as cheap and contemptible, so You abandoned us.
15:333
And this he says from human custom.
15:334
因為我們的習慣,是把那些不值錢又低賤的東西,甚至白白地送人;
For it is our habit to give away what is dishonored and cheap even without price;
15:335
至於那些我們極為看重的東西,即或出售,也是賣得高價;
but those things we set much store by, even if we sell them, we sell for a great price;
15:336
but those for which we have little regard, these we even hand over for nothing.
15:337
Of thankless household slaves, at any rate, some sell them for half their value, and others hand them over receiving nothing at all.
15:338
But if to let a thing go for a lesser price shows the cheapness of what is sold,
15:339
then to receive no price at all, but to give without price, shows it far more.
15:340
Just as if some man should part with his own possessions without price, so did You also abandon us as though we were of no honor; You utterly despised us.
15:341
This indeed he also makes plain in what he adds, saying:
15:342
在賣我們的交易中並沒有豐厚的所得;
And there was no abundance in the exchange for us;
15:343
that is, in the purchase-price of us.
15:344
因此另一譯本也說:在給我們定價上;
Wherefore another version also says, In the pricing of us;
15:345
that is, in the sale of us.
15:346
For we often give a household slave, and receive silver or gold.
15:347
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those round about us.
15:348
Another says, A spectacle to those round about us.
15:349
You have made us a byword among the nations.
15:350
Grievous is this punishment and unbearable, especially to be reproached by the ungodly, to suffer these things at the hands of enemies, and to have those who trample upon them encircling them round about, and to be beset on every side by those who revile.
15:351
But what is a parable? It is a byword, a reproach.
15:352
For those round about were certain foul and unfeeling men, who not only showed no pity, but even heaped reproaches upon them; and this above all was what stung them.
15:353
And here he seems to me to be speaking of the Arabs, those who dwelt as neighbours beside them.
15:354
'A shaking of the head among the peoples.'
15:355
Either he means this, that 'Thou hast removed us from our place'; or else, through the gesture of the shaking of the head, he indicates the drunken insolence of one who greatly exults over them.
15:356
'All the day long my shame is before me.'
15:357
'And the confusion of my face hath covered me, because of the voice of him that reproacheth and speaketh against me.'
15:358
Another version says, 'And of him that blasphemeth.'
15:359
'Because of the presence of the enemy and persecutor.'
15:360
These things stung them more than their punishments did.
15:361
For since they had ever and continually enjoyed prosperity, and had prevailed over their enemies, then were the mouths of all opened against them, now that they had fallen and been tripped up, and could not so much as lift up their heads, but endured unceasing punishment.
15:362
'All these things are come upon us, yet have we not forgotten Thee, neither have we dealt falsely in Thy covenant.'
15:363
Another version: 'Neither have we dealt deceitfully with Thy compact.'
15:364
'Contrary to the rest,' he says, 'have we come.'
15:365
因為那些人甚至在災禍臨到之前就已被絆倒了;
For those men were tripped up even before the terrors came;
15:366
'but we,' he says, 'even after the terrors have stood firm, holding our resolve unturned.'
15:367
encouraging those who were with them.
15:368
Wherefore indeed, when Daniel and the three children said:
15:369
'We have not dealt falsely in Thy covenant;'
15:370
lifting up the spirits of their fellow-soldiers.
15:371
'For if we have suffered the greatest things,' he says, 'and are the descendants of those who received great benefits, and in our calamities we have not turned aside, there will be for us a great hope of salvation.'
15:372
Therefore, as I said from the beginning, this I say also now: that in the manner of a prayer they anoint and stir up their own spirits, as though they were saying to themselves:
15:373
'For what reason have you despaired of salvation? We have God as the one who presides over us;'
15:374
'even if in anything we have sinned, we have paid a sufficient penalty;'
15:375
'in our trials we have stood nobly;'
15:376
'we have as our guide the One who ever presides even over sinners;'
15:377
'wherefore on every side we must look for a good end.'
15:378
But what is the meaning of, 'We have not dealt falsely in Thy covenant'? That is to say, 'We have not been unfaithful concerning these things which were entrusted to us, but have kept them with all exactness.'
15:379
因為當一個人干犯那保護他的律法——就是那不容他受鄰人欺壓、又制止邪惡的律法——時,這實在是最大的不義;
For it is indeed the greatest injustice, when one transgresses the law that defends him, the law that does not even suffer him to be wronged by his neighbours, and that restrains wickedness;
15:380
when he acts thanklessly toward the One who bestows so many good things.
15:381
'And our heart hath not turned back.'
15:382
Another version says, 'It hath not withdrawn.'
15:383
'And Thou hast not turned aside our paths from Thy way.'
15:384
Another version says, 'Neither did that which upholds us swerve aside.'
15:385
Another: 'And our heart hath not turned back, and Thou hast not made our steps to swerve.'
15:386
What he said before, this he says here too: that in so great a storm of evils they were not shaken even a little.
15:387
因為正如律法引人向前,違法卻使人退後;
For just as the law leads forward, so lawlessness removes one backward;
15:388
and just as the law bids one walk the straight path, so lawlessness removes a man into the desert and the trackless waste.
15:389
Therefore by 'way' he here means the law.
15:390
至於「你使之偏離」這句話,正是其他譯本所說的;
And as for 'Thou hast turned aside,' which is what the other versions say;
15:391
Neither have those things that hold us upright been turned aside from thy way.
15:392
«Vatte ashurenu minni orach» (the Hebrew of the verse).
15:393
但若有人願意照七十士譯本,而非照其他譯者來解釋,那句「你使我們的路徑偏離你的道路」的意思是:「你使我們遠離你的殿,並使我們置身於異邦之地」;
But if one should choose to interpret according to the Seventy, and not according to the others, the phrase, 'Thou hast turned aside our paths from thy way,' means this: that 'Thou hast removed us far from thy temple, and hast caused us to be in a foreign land';
15:394
which did not allow the acts of divine service to be performed.
15:395
'For thou hast humbled us in a place of affliction,'
15:396
'and the shadow of death hath covered us.'
15:397
Another translator says, 'Thou hast covered us over.'
15:398
This, it seems to me, is the recompense answering to what went before, in which they recount their evils, saying, 'The shame of my face hath covered me, at the voice of him that reproacheth and slandereth';
15:399
If, however, one should take it as referring to the phrase, 'Thou hast turned aside our paths from thy way,' then here it has a logical sequence according to the sense which we have stated.
15:400
For it makes clear how he thrust them out from their own paths—I mean, from their manner of life and their ordinances—namely, by leading them away into desert places, and abandoning them in the midst of enemies.
15:401
因為這正是「死蔭遮蓋了我們」的意思;
For this is the meaning of, 'The shadow of death hath covered us';
15:402
speaking of the perils that give birth to death, and near to which deaths lie, even as the Scripture also calls them the pangs of death and the gates of hades.
15:403
And by means of the 'shadow' and the 'covering' he here sets forth the inescapability of these terrors, which admit of no dissolution to be found, nor are able to grant even a little breathing-space.
15:404
'If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have stretched out our hands to a strange god, shall not God search this out? For he himself knoweth the secrets of the heart.'
15:405
這是知恩僕人的標記,就是雖然受苦,仍留下來事奉他們的主人;
This is the mark of grateful servants, to remain serving their master even while suffering ill;
15:406
these are the lessons of true wisdom.
15:407
Here they also instruct their hearers not to play the hypocrite, but to serve God with the whole heart.
15:408
'For he knoweth,' he says, 'the hidden things of the mind.'
15:409
And these things they say in order to make them fearful, so that they might do nothing amiss.
15:410
也要看那德行的極大長進;
Behold also the great increase of virtue;
15:411
'For thy sake are we killed all the day long;'
15:412
'we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.'
15:413
因為留下來事奉神,不跳離而去投靠別神,這固然是件大事;
For it is indeed a great thing to remain serving God, and not to leap away to another;
15:414
but it is far greater, while continual deaths and daily perils press upon one, to preserve such a love.
15:415
And consider what a kind of true wisdom this is, seeing that Paul too employed it, when he enumerated the snowstorm of apostolic perils in his Epistle to the Romans.
15:416
Of how many crowns, then, would these men be worthy, when in the Old Covenant they are seen to have attained to the measure of the contests in the New? For that which Paul says, 'I die daily,' this these men also fulfilled—not in actual experience, nor in the end result, but in their resolve.
15:417
但他為何說「為你的緣故」呢?他說:因為我們原本可以轉投他方,可以捨棄祖先傳下的生活方式,而得以平安穩妥;
But why does he say, 'For thy sake'? Because it was in our power, he says, to change sides, and to forsake our ancestral manner of life, and to be in safety;
15:418
but we choose rather to suffer ill and to keep our ancestral ways, than to enjoy peace after falling away from our ancestral inheritance.
15:419
'We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.'
15:420
'Thus easily,' he says, 'do they slay us.'
15:421
And here he also displays their gentleness.
15:422
But nevertheless, though thus set forth for slaughter, we remain holding a resolve that cannot be turned aside.
15:423
Here too it is worthy to be amazed at the power of God, in that he preserved those who were thus set forth as sheep for the slaughter, and though they died daily, he did not permit them to fall into death.
15:424
'Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord?' Another says, 'Why art thou as one sleeping?' Another, 'Rouse thyself up.'
15:425
'Arise, and cast us not off for ever.'
15:426
'Why turnest thou away thy face?' Another, 'Thou hidest.'
15:427
'Dost thou forget our poverty and our affliction?' Another, 'Our misery?' And what he means is this:
15:428
for these things come to pass not through any weakness of thine, but through thy forbearance.
15:429
For by 'sleep' he here means the stillness, and by 'arising' the recompense, and by 'face' the succour, the providence, the watchful care, the alliance in battle.
15:430
'Why dost thou forget our poverty?' Behold again their gratitude.
15:431
他沒有說:「因著我們的善行」;
He did not say, 'Of our good deeds';
15:432
他沒有說:「因著我們不動搖的心志」;
he did not say, 'Of our unshaken resolve';
15:433
他沒有說:「因著在試煉中被試驗過的靈魂」;
he did not say, 'Of a soul proven in temptations';
15:434
然而當他們為自己申辯時,他們是提出那些事的;
but when they make a defense on their own behalf, they put forward those things;
15:435
but when they seek an ally, from the very grounds by which the condemned are judged, from these they ask to be saved.
15:436
'Since we have paid the penalty,' he says, 'since we have suffered the uttermost.'
15:437
This too Paul does often, and others of the prophets as well.
15:438
And these things they said, knowing as yet nothing about hell, nor about the kingdom, nor having been taught to reflect on such matters, and yet they bore everything with ease.
15:439
'For our soul has been brought down to the dust;'
15:440
'our belly cleaves to the earth.'
15:441
'You forget our poverty;'
15:442
that is, our affliction; henceforth he speaks of the affliction.
15:443
'We have perished, we have been buried, we are in no better state than the dead.'
15:444
And one might rightly say too that the soul of those who cling fast to present things has been brought down to the dust, and that the belly of the gluttonous has cleaved to the earth.
15:445
For indeed the man who is bound fast by lust, and who gapes after the mire, and who enslaves the incorporeal power within him to the ashes, might well be said to suffer these very things.
15:446
For what else is the beauty of the body but dust and clay—nay rather, something even more unsightly than these? And if you disbelieve, go examine the tombs of men, and you will see the clay and the dust.
15:447
因為當這面容脫去今生的時候,那時它就顯出它本來的樣子;
For when the face puts off this present life, then it appears as what it truly is;
15:448
nay rather, even before death itself.
15:449
因為當年老臨到、當疾病侵襲的時候,那時你就必看見它真實的樣子;
For when old age comes on, when sickness falls upon it, then you will see what it really is;
15:450
but as a wise Craftsman, He caused an inconceivable beauty to arise even out of mean material—not that you should
15:451
commit fornication, but that He might afford you a proof of His own wisdom.
15:452
Do not therefore insult the Artificer, nor make the work of His wisdom an occasion for licentiousness and fornication.
15:453
Admire the fair form only so far, only to the point of glorifying the Artificer; but do not go further, salving your passion.
15:454
Therefore one ought to worship Him who made it, and not to insult Him.
15:455
If someone, tell me, taking a golden statue of a person and a royal image, should defile it with filth and other such things, would he not pay the uttermost penalty? And if the man who is thankless in human affairs is liable to so great a punishment, what will he suffer who has clothed the work of God in such great dishonor—and especially when the one who does these things is plainly seen to have a wife? For do not plead to me the desire of nature.
15:456
For it is on this account that marriage was permitted, that you might not advance beyond your own proper bounds.
15:457
For consider how great a punishment you will be worthy of.
15:458
For God provided beforehand both for your rest and for your honor, that you might both release the frenzy of nature through your wife, and do this without danger, and be freed from all unseemliness.
15:459
But do you, out of sheer excess, insult Him who thus provides for you? For tell me, if He had not been willing to ordain marriage by law, how great a compulsion would you have endured? How great a chastisement? You ought therefore to give thanks and to glorify Him, because He cut away for you the greater part of your labors, devising no ordinary consolation; yet you insult Him thanklessly, and act shamelessly, and overstep the appointed bounds, and disgrace His glory. Do you not hear Paul crying out even now, and shouting in the midst, 'Flee fornication'—nay rather, Christ, who moves that man's soul? Why do you scrutinize another's beauty? Why do you busy yourself with a face that is not yours? Why do you rush over the precipices? Why do you cast yourself into the nets? Wall up your eyes, hedge round your sight, set a law for your eyes.
15:460
Hear Christ threatening, and judging the unchaste look as equal to adultery.
15:461
那快樂有甚麼益處呢?既然它生出蟲子來?既然它生出無止息的恐懼?既然它為行此事者生出不死的刑罰?暫時忍受那從我們自己思念而來的逼迫,好得永遠的安逸,豈不遠勝過稍微滿足了那不正當的情慾,卻要受永遠的刑罰嗎?我的兒女啊,不要,不要這樣行;
What profit is there in the pleasure, when it breeds a worm? when it breeds unceasing fear? when it breeds undying punishment for the one who has done it? How much better it is, having endured for a little while the violence that comes from our own reasonings, to be at ease forever, than, having gratified for a little our unseemly desires, to be punished everlastingly? Do not, my children, do not act thus;
15:462
not good is the report which I hear concerning you.
15:463
我知道這話是針對甚麼人說的——並不是針對所有人;
I know against whom the word is directed—not against all;
15:464
but wherever it finds the wound, there it applies the remedy.
15:465
Why do you insult marriage? Why do you wrong the marriage-bed? Why do you outrage your own member? Why do you disgrace your glory? Cut off the passion, do away with the indulgences.
15:466
Luxury and drunkenness are the springs of fornication.
15:467
If you do not use your ease as you ought, He will bring affliction upon you.
15:468
Hear what the Jews suffered when they committed fornication—they who had not partaken of the body of Christ, who had not enjoyed the spiritual table: 'Neither let us commit fornication,' he says, 'as some of them committed, and there fell in one day twenty-three thousand.'
15:469
'Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for Your name's sake.'
15:470
Another version: 'Stand up, taking hold of us, and deliver us for the sake of Your mercy.'
15:471
See where they enclosed their plea. After countless right deeds of their own, on what ground do they claim to be saved? From mercy, from lovingkindness, for the sake of the name of God.
15:472
After countless right deeds of their own, on what ground do they claim to be saved? From mercy, from lovingkindness, for the sake of the name of God.
15:473
What does 'For your name's sake' mean? That it may not be profaned—which He Himself also often says: 'I act for the sake of my name.'
15:474
Did you see the humility and the contrite mind? And on what ground do they claim to be saved? From lovingkindness, from mercy.
15:475
As though they were destitute of good deeds, as though they possessed no title to salvation—and yet, abounding in so many labors and dangers, they referred the whole to God.
15:476
Let us also, who are under grace, imitate these men, and send up glory to God, to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages.
